BRIDGETTE K. SLAVIN, PH.D.

Dr. Bridgette Slavin earned her BA in History and Anthropology with a minor in Medieval Studies from SUNY Oswego, her MA in Medieval Studies from Western Michigan University, and her PhD in Celtic Studies from the University of Sydney. Dr. Slavin began teaching at Medaille College as an adjunct faculty member in 2010 and joined the full time faculty in 2014. Dr. Slavin teaches numerous classes for the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies and is Co-Director of the Medaille College Honors Program. In addition to teaching, she has worked as an archaeologist in both the United States and Australia. She enjoys combining her passion for cultural diversity, material culture, and history in her classes. Dr. Slavin’s research has focused mainly on the subjects of kingship, magic, and the law in medieval Ireland. She recently published, “Secret Killing and Magic in the Law of Adamnán,” an essay included in the volume, Medieval and Early Modern Murder, by Boydell Press. Forthcoming publications include a manuscript entitled, Druídecht: Perceptions of Magic and Druidry in Early Irish Texts, for the University of Wales Press, and an essay, “Childhood in the Common Law Courts of Medieval Ireland,” for the volume, Kids Those Days: Children in Medieval Culture, to be published by Brill. Her next book-length project is on the female felon in medieval Ireland. As her students know, Dr. Slavin loves animals and has three cats. She has worked at the Buffalo Zoo, the Tarronga Zoo in Sydney, and for various wildlife rehabilitation centers throughout the years. She has a passion for travel and has lived on three continents. She also runs a monthly meditation class and enjoys her role as the paranormal club advisor here at Medaille.
