Exploring Ayurvedic Wellness

“Awesome feeling! If you’re ever on Maui this is a must do.” - Adrian Kukua

By Susan Wilesmith Ayurveda (science of life) is an ancient form of natural healing which comes from India. One form of ayurvedic healing is panchakarma – pancha means “five” and karma refers to action. The five actions, or treatments, eliminate toxins from the seven layers of tissues of the body. What does panchakarma do? It loosens the toxins that are glued to our cells; these toxins stop us from digesting and absorbing nutrients to certain parts of the body. Once the nadi points, or channels, are clear of toxins, the body’s senses, systems and digestion work at a higher function. Specific treatments and preparations of ayurvedic oils, herbal formulations and teas, are administered; these release toxins through the malas (sweat, urine and feces). In an ayurvedic consultation, you can expect to discuss your health and habits. A week-long panchakarma preparation is undertaken before your treatments begin. A panchakarma cleanse is performed every day for 2 hours, for a minimum of 5 days and up to 30 days, depending on the imbalances. As a panchakarma practitioner, I have supported many clients in their detoxification process. I have seen only benefits with every person. The skin becomes more radiant and glowing; wrinkles diminish. Clients often experience reduction in anxiety, fears, blood sugars, blood pressure, thyroid, hormonal issues, weight and stress. I also see stabilization of the nervous system and digestion system, and the lymphatic system kicks back into gear. After 16 years of research and treating clients, I can say that everything starts from the senses. We have experiences every day. Our gut is the first feeling responder, as there are more neurons in the gut than in the chest center or brain. First we feel (or we shut down our feelings out of avoidance). Then we think (ego), and we determine whether the experience we are having is good or bad. If emotions are stored in the body, we will experience inflammation as the first sign of accumulation and aggravation of stored toxins. Toxins are undigested matter. Stress creates an increase in cortisol levels, which takes 6 hours to process. If there is ongoing stress or disharmony in our environment, relationships, living situation or finances, then our bodies go into crisis mode. AlohaVeda Spa, an ayurvedic wellness center that focuses on Ayurveda and panchakarma detox treatments, creates a safe and supportive environment to receive treatments in Hawaii. Safety relaxes the body instantly; the parasympathetic response relaxes the nerves. This creates gateways to eliminate and let go, and gives strength and support to all systems with an ability to take charge. Decisions are actioned with an increase in clarity and joy; gratitude and appreciation are felt on all levels. Susan Wilesmith, of AlohaVeda Spa, has over 15 years experience in panchakarma and Ayurveda. AlohaVeda Spa, located at 42 Baldwin Ave., Paia, offers panchakarma, massage (treatments and training), and live-in retreats in Makawao. Ayurvedic healing workshops in July and September will feature visiting teachers. Please contact: www.alohaveda.com, alohaveda@gmail.com, 808.634.0346.
