KENILWORTH Another Successful Leader at Kenilworth State Community College

KENILWORTH SC CAMP OUT

L

eadership skills are nurtured and developed at the Kenilworth State Community College so it was a very happy Principal who presented yet another year 7 student with a leadership badge and certificate on parade recently. Sam Smith (pictured below with the Principal) joins his classmates Braedyn, Kimberly, Tara and Delaney as a leader of the college. At Kenilworth we give all of our Year 7 students the opportunity to develop leadership skills and gain recognition as Student Leaders. Our standards are high. Students are rated against criteria in the leadership areas of Role Model, Interpersonal Skills, Integrity and Responsibility and Communication.

School Principal Sue Brieschke commended Sam for his perseverance and determination. Sam did not meet all of the criteria for the first round of student leadership but with some help and guidance he was successful in meeting and demonstrating all of the required leadership qualities. Mrs Brieschke told the assembled audience that Sam was an example of never giving up and working hard to achieve your goals. The marimba band, made up of students from years 5, 6 and 7, aided the mood of celebration by entertaining the audience with two lively numbers.

O

n Friday night 3 September our younger students of Kenilworth State Community College enjoyed a fun filled camp out at school. The excitement of sleeping in tents, showering at school and playing games “in the dark” was wonderful to see in our Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 students. Even playing frisbee and eating breakfast at school the next morning was a hit! Thanks to our parents for allowing your children to attend such an enjoyable camp which successfully aimed at developing independence and resilience in our youngsters. Also a big thank you to Boyd, Robert and Ash for their invaluable assistance at our “Kenilworth Camp Out.”

On the photo above: the Prep-2 Camp out photos features Prep-2 students Tyla, Ruby and Alisha setting up their tent assisted by Year 5-7 students, Delaney, Taylah and Ishy.

STUDENTS HAVE A DIG AT VOLLEYBALL

K

enilworth State Community College students recently had a fun day competing against students from Conondale, Mapleton and Montville at the Five Nations Volleyball Tournament held at Montville. It was a perfect spring day, blue sky and sunshine and a small amount of wind which occasionally had its own way with the volleyballs. It was a great day for students from small schools to compete in a friendly manner whilst increasing their volleyball skills.

A

feast to the eyes of not only scarecrows gracing the Mary Valley, there’s also a week long Kenilworth Celebrates! 2010 Arts Festival embracing art workshops, multiple exhibitions, a poet’s breakfast, a show ‘n shine + bike art and street entertainment! All this joy from the last weekend in September continuing to 3 October with award nights, artwork raffle draw and screenings of Kenilworth’s first Timeline Film Fest at the “Roxy Cinema” in the Kenilworth Historical Museum. At time of press, the $15,000 Kenilworth Art Prize winner is unknown but the community film-making winner is and on behalf of our communities, thanks to all contributors and custodians of “reel” history.

“SAVING MARY” TAKES TOP AWARDS

A

unamious decision by the three juges gave “Saving Mary” the Best Film Award in Kenilworth’s Timeline 2010 Festival of Short Films. This beautifully crafted seven minute video film by local filmmakers Marc Bright (Director), Shawn Jarvy (Editor) and Judy Stark (on Camera) captures the essence of the struggle against the proposed Traveston Crossing Dam.

1924 SHOW PREPARATION - WINNIE SIMS

K

enilworth and Imbil shows for 2010 have now been held - with both still being managed by volunteers from the community - it may be a suitable time to consider the preparation that went into producing entries for the show of 1924 (86 years ago). At that time all cooking was done in very early forms of wood stove and all mixing done by hand (imagine making nearly 30 varieties of biscuits all hand mixed!). The following snippets from the diary of Winnie Sims may give an insight into the activity in one of the local homes of the time. Another gift from the past. Thursday August 28, 1924 We got up at five o’clock and left here at 7.30am for the Imbil show. The roads were wet. We had 21 aboard. Dick drove Henry Fritz’s car. The show wasn’t as good as usual no band. It rained and made the roads dreadful. Tuesday 23 September, 1924 Mum was making cakes for the show. Lil and I did most of the ironing and mended eleven pairs of trousers. Friday 26 Mum spent the day making biscuits for the show. She has nearly 30 varieties and they look very nice. I washed, ironed and mended. Lil and Dorrie did the other work - we left the scrubbing for tomorrow. Saturday 27 I made a pink and green rosette for my voile dress for the show. Sunday 28 We were up early and bucked round and left here by 9.30am to go to the township to see the cars of the reliability test go through. Quite a crowd came. It was quite exciting to see all the different cars dash past - they

Our front cover story It illustrates the effect on the people and the threat to the unique environment of the Mary River Valley. For Marc Bright, it was only his second attempt at filmmaking, and for Judy Stark it was her very first attempt at video filming - the results are excellent! While filming the beautiful opening sequence, Judy spent hours in the water and said “I copped a very wet bum for my effort”. By the end of the day the crew were well and truly “Black Beaned out!”. The film has already won two awards at the recent Eco Flicks Film Festival, claiming the most inspirational film and the People’s Choice Awards. Apart from Judy doing a two day Community Filmmakers Workshop in Kenilworth, the crew are all self taught. This “no budget” film shows what can be done by people who are prepared to put in their time, effort and skill to capture a moment in history that is of great value to the whole community - and beyond. Very well done. Don’t miss seeing “Saving Mary” and a host of other award winning films in the Timeline Festival at the “Roxy Cinema” Kenilworth on Wednesday 29 September and Saturday 2 October (See advert page 9) Kev Franzi went at a terrific speed. We had dinner at the river. The lorry went to Cambroon for cream and got caught in a heavy storm. Tuesday 30 I did all the ironing, starting first thing, also the mending. I iced the cake for the show this afternoon; they all say it is very nice. Mum made another pound cake, the third attempt, and it is good. Ed is busy with his exhibits. Wednesday 1 October 1924 We got all the work done up bright and early. Mr and Mrs Chadwick, Val and Girlie came by car. Mylie Webster and Jimmie Hughes came with four horses - Timothy, Paris, Hailstorm and Sally. Chas Smith and Horace Brown came also. Thursday 2 Kenilworth show. (6th) A glorious day - weather perfect. They took 33 pounds at the gate. The pavilion and horses and cattle were splendid. People remarked that it was a great show. I was disappointed that Mum didn’t get more prizes, she got 16 blues and 11 reds. I didn’t get any prizes. Ern and Dad did well. George Chadwick came out in a gray car.

MV SHOW SOCIETY Date Claimers

T

he Mary Valley Show Society has had a huge year which is ongoing. By the time this issue is published a Camp Draft was put together by Lyndall Ensby and Barry Grainger and hold on the grounds on 25 and 26 September. Camp drafts give horse men and women a chance to show off their skills. We’re hoping to make this an annual event. Next on the agenda is our very first Swap Meet. This is a chance to pick up some bargains whether it be car parts, excess building materials or general bric a brac. It will be held at the Showgrounds in Imbil, trading commencing at 6am on Saturday 23 October. Free camping is available on the Friday night and breakfast will be available from our canteen the following morning.

For more info ring Viv on 5485 5335 or Val on 5484 5298. Cathy’s famous Cent Sale will be held in the Imbil Public Hall on Saturday 20 November. This has proven to be a very popular event with lots of prizes and a scrumptious afternoon tea. On behalf of the Community Christmas Party, the Mary Valley Show Society invite expressions of interest from all groups and clubs with regards to the future of the Community Christmas Party held each year at the Imbil Showgrounds. Without input both financially and volunteer support, the event can no longer be conducted free of charge to the community. It is up to the community to take the initiative and ensure this continues each year for the benefit of all. The Show Society are willing to provide the grounds and amenities but cannot support the entire events as it has done so in the last few years. Mary Valley Community and Family Bike Ride

he weather was perfect for the first Community and Family Bike Ride on Sunday 12 September 2010. The course was set from Imbil to Brooloo and return. Around 50 riders registered for the ride and were encouraged by 20+ supporters. The ride was well worth the effort, as there were tasty scones with jam and cream waiting at the Brooloo Hall grounds, supplied by the Brooloo Hall Committee, Kenilworth Bakery and Cooloola Milk. The “Turtle Race” time trial was held on a specially made track for the inaugural Mary Valley Turtle Bike Race. It was a good test of skills to ride the bumpy and twisty track! Etahan Logan was the winner of the trophy with the slowest time of 47 seconds. The trophy was a turtle mounted on a plinth. Back at Imbil, Murray Stewart had designed a number of challenges for the riders at Dick Quigg Bike Track. The day was capped off with a sausage sizzle and prizes awarded to lucky competitors. The day would not have been possible without the support of the community and special thanks to Imbil SES, Sgt Terry Kennedy, Anthony Heffernan from Madills Toyota, Alan and Gwen Forsdyke, Peter and Irene Deschamps, Murray Stewart and the Brooloo Hall Committee. All funds raised will go to the Mary Valley LCC, who support the two school chaplains who work with our local schools. What a fantastic day! n Sunday 12 September 2010, the Brooloo Hall Community Centre Inc. hosted the Mary Valley Family and Community Bike Ride (see article p7). The day was in support of Mary Valley School Chaplaincies. The riders stopped for morning tea at the Brooloo Hall grounds and participated in the “Turtle Race” on the specially prepared bike track. We would also like to acknowledge the generous support of Joe and Francesca Monteleone owners of the Kenilworth Bakery who kindly donated their bakehouse kitchen, ingredients and time to the baking of the wonderful scones that received such rave reviews. We would also like to again thank, Cooloola Milk for their continuing support by way of milk and cream for the morning teas. Without these unselfish generous people events like these would be much more difficult to run. Please show your support for them, as they have shown their support for us. The feedback from all who participated was very encouraging and we look forward to seeing them and more next year.

State Champions Blew Judges Away

ood Shepherd Lutheran College sent their four qualifying teams to the State ‘Tournament of Minds’ Finals held at Griffith University, Nathan campus on Sunday 12 September. All teams performed admirably with the Applied Technology team earning Honours, but once again it was the Maths Engineering team which continued to impress by taking out the Queensland State title for the third consecutive year. The judges were quoted as saying that they were “blown away” by the creativity and quality of the students’ response to the brand new challenge provided on the day and especially with how well it was communicated. The team will now proceed to the Australasian Pacific Finals of Tournament of Minds in Darwin where they will be defending the title that they earned in 2009 against the best teams from all States and Territories, plus Hong Kong, Singapore and New Zealand. This hard working, vibrant and talented group of students are seeking sponsorship to assist with the costs associated with the venture and would appreciate any support from the community. Please ring Good Shepherd Lutheran College on 5455 8600 if you are in a position to help these Queensland representatives. Tournament of Minds is a competition designed to encourage students to think outside the square and the Good Shepherd teams certainly proved they were very capable of this and more. We wish them all the best at the next level. (See related photo next page)

The loss of loads causes unsightly rubbish along roadways and footpaths and some of the loads coming clear cause damage to following vehicles. Penalties apply for drivers who do not adequately secure loads and those penalties will be enforced. The State penalties Enforcement Registry (SPER) is responsible for the collection and enforcement of unpaid fines. A suspension of your drivers licence could occur if you commit a motor vehicle related offence and you fail to pay the amount of your Enforcement Order (such as Infringement Notice) in full within the 28 days allowed; default on your instalment arrangement with SPER; fail to complete unpaid community service under a Fine Option Order; or fail to comply with the Notice of Intention to Suspend Drivers Licence. If your licence has been suspended you should contact SPER Call Centre (1300 365635) immediately to either pay the outstanding amount of your fines in full; or if you cannot afford to clear your fine in one payment, SPER can organise a regular payment plan to help you pay your fine in weekly, fortnightly or monthly instalments. It is an offence under the Transport Operations (Road use Management) Act to drive a vehicle while on a SPER suspension. If charged and a Court convicts you, you will be disqualified from holding or obtaining a drivers licence for a period of up to six months. The charge may also lead to vehicle impoundment. Your licence can be suspended until the fine is paid in full or other arrangements are made to finalise the fine with SPER. Once an arrangement is made with SPER to clear the outstanding fines, you can drive again unless there are other disqualifications in place against your licence. There are now a number of options to pay your SPER debt. They can be payed at Australia Post, Centrepay if you get an eligible Centrelink payment, credit card, direct debit, mail and in person. OUR COMMUNITY Repair works progress on Obi Obi Road landslip

Giving life – Talking about organ donation at your local library

W

orks to repair the steepest and most difficult section of the Obi Obi Road landslip has begun mid-September. Transport and Main Roads Regional Director Dennis Tennant said repair works had already been completed on several of the higher sections of the landslip. “Repairs are progressing well given the challenging conditions involved in undertaking repairs to an 80-metre high landslip,” Mr Tennant said. “More than 22,000 cubic metres of soil and rubble has been excavated from the slip so far. The exposed slope has then been stabilised by drilling and grouting 2000 metres of soil nails and applying steel mesh and concrete.” “The repair program has now reached the steepest section of the slip which is considered the most difficult area to repair. Once repairs to this critical section have been completed we will be better placed to estimate when the entire project will be completed and the road can safely be reopened.” Mr Tennant said the department was working closely with Sunshine Coast Regional Council to maintain conditions on the Hunsley Road detour route. “The department has carried out works along Hunsley Road in mid-May to improve road conditions and safety,” he said. “The department also recently upgraded the Coolabine and Hunsley Roads intersection and bitumen sealing a 500-metre section of Hunsley Road, west of Cutmore Road. Water trucks are also being used along the road to reduce dust levels.” “These measures have improved conditions along the road, but motorists need to be aware of the increased traffic levels using the road and drive to the conditions.” In response to concerns regarding the safety of school buses using the detour route, the department recently changed the watering times to ensure they do not coincide with peak school bus times. The department is working closely with the school bus services that are operating along the Hunsley Road detour route to ensure road conditions provide safe school travel. Motorists and heavy vehicles are recommended to use alternate routes along Eumundi-Kenilworth Road and Maleny-Kenilworth Road. ELECTRICAL CONTRACTOR

unshine Coast Libraries have been offered an opportunity to get on board Australia’s new DonateLife organ and tissue donation campaign and help raise awareness that organ donation can save lives and tissue donation can improve quality of life. Unfortunately, there are over 1700 people on Australia’s organ transplant waiting lists and more than one person will die every week waiting. Sunshine Coast Regional Donor Coordinators will be presenting the “Seeds of Hope” program throughout October in libraries across the region to explain what people need to do to protect their wishes, and how to find out about local processes. Combined with real life experiences from a local recipient and donor family, Matty and Wendy, these sessions are sure to have a lasting impact and change lives. Community Engagement and Governance Portfolio councillor Christian Dickson, said there is an urgent need to increase Australia’s organ and tissue donation rates and the first step is to get the topic on the community agenda and conversations started in every household. “While this is a highly sensitive topic, we should not be shying away from the reality. One organ and tissue donor can save the lives of up to 10 people and improve the lives of dozens more.” Cr Dickson said. As part of the “Seeds of Hope” program Wendy will share her very moving story about her daughter who died in a car accident six years ago and her decision to donate her daughter’s organs for transplantation. Matty will recount his survival after two kidney transplants. The first organ donation was from his mother and the second from a deceased donor. Cr Dickson added many people were unaware the consent for organ donation would be sought from the family even though their decision may not necessarily be the wish of the prospective donor. Currently only 58% of families give their consent for organ and tissue donation to proceed. Sessions are free and with places filling fast, bookings are essential. y family is having a family muster (reunion) from 15 to 18 October 2010. We thought as a ‘human interest story’ your Newspaper may be interested not that we are seeking the fame of having our photos in the paper (though some of the family members would get a kick out of it). The families are travelling from a variety of places Hervey Bay, Toowoomba, Geraldton WA, Darwin, Sydney, Bundaberg, Dirranbandi, Gympie, Alloomba (Nth QLD) and Brisbane. Last year we held a camp at Imbil (and it was a huge success) - this year we have continued the tradition and will be holding another Family Muster at Imbil. We are holding our kids games day at the Imbil showgrounds hall, and also holding a function at the hall that night -karaoke, dancing and meeting family members that we have not seen in years, and those that we have never met. We held our first reunion in Hervey Bay 2008 - this involved the direct descendents of my grandparents (with 100 or so showing up). We wanted to hold a camp last year, and my cousin found Imbil - we enjoyed spending time there so much, that we wished to do it again this year. Last year we had another impressive turn-out and we held our own event at the Island Reach Camping Ground, Imbil - it was a great time had by all. This year the invitations have been extended to my Nan and Pop’s direct family (Blincos and Herberts). So far we have a confirmed 160 adults and children coming.

new art group has been formed. The Pastel Society Of Australia has formed the Sunshine Coast Group and is about to begin regular monthly meetings. Pastel Society members enjoy the benefits of demonstrations and workshops with experienced pastel tutors and social interaction with like minded artists. There is also opportunity to enter competitions, receive professional critiques and gain encouragement and friendship through sharing the love of pastels. At the first Sunshine Coast meeting, Master Pastellist and well known local artist Chris Blake will demonstrate an urban street scene. There will be ample opportunity for questions and socialising over a cup of tea or coffee. All who have an interest in finding out more about pastels are encouraged to come along. The first meeting will be held Tuesday 12 October starting at 7pm at the SCAG art room Elizabeth Daniel’s Park, Mooloolaba-Buderim Road, Buderim. Cost Members $5; Visitors $10. Monthly meeting will continue on the 2nd Tuesday of every month (except in January). All queries to Tricia Taylor on 0419 176 986. Chris Blake pastel “Coochimuldo Island”

We can all relate to the fact that we don’t spend enough time with family, time goes too fast and we get caught up in our own lives. So this is a great time to re-connect old relationships and build new ones and give the younger generation a sense of belonging. Again, this is just as a story about a large family getting together to reminisce and enjoy being a family. Sonya Herbert

OUR P OLITICS WELLINGTON’S WAY

P

ush for Kenilworth Ambulance In Parliament I continue to call for an ambulance service for the Mary Valley. I attended the recent Kenilworth First Response AGM and have since put a question to the Minister for Emergency Services regarding the First Response’s ten years of support to the Mary Valley community, and its steadily increasing work load. On behalf of this community I am again calling on the government to provide an ambulance service for our Mary Valley. I have asked the minister to collate the statistics on call-outs for our community response group and compare these with other small Queensland Ambulance Services. I believe it is these statistics which will demonstrate to the government the strong case for an ambulance station in our Valley. I do not believe it’s appropriate for the State Government, knowing there is a strong case of an ambulance station, to continue to rely on our volunteer First Responders to pick up the tab. I have also supported an e-petition which is currently circulating for support for this service. Road safety meeting I recently attended a school bus safety meeting at Kenilworth, in response to concerns from some residents about the slippery surface of the Cooloolabin-Hunsley Road. Local bus drivers and parents of children travelling on the bus to Kenilworth Community College via the Cooloolabin-Hunsley Road detour attended the meeting, and the meeting agreed unanimously that the school bus would continue to use the detour road. It was also agreed that Council and Main Roads should continue the current upgrade by applying more gravel/blue metal on the surface to improve safety and reducing the watering on the road. I urge drivers using this road to reduce their speed as indicated or face fines. Local police are monitoring and enforcing the reduced speed limit, and if drivers do not comply, they will be fined. Push for Patient Travel Subsidy review In Parliament I have called on the Health Minister to totally review the Queensland Health Patient Travel Subsidy Scheme, including the current travel subsidy of 15cents per kilometre, and the current accommodation subsidy of up to $30 per person per night. Many Sunshine Coast residents need to travel to Brisbane to access essential life-saving specialist medical services that are not available in our region. It is often unsafe for patients to drive after treatments, and current train and bus services to the Sunshine Coast are clearly inadequate. While I understand the mileage rate was increased from 10c to 15cents/kilometre in 2007, the accommodation component of this subsidy has not been increased since 1986. The funding formula is antiquated and out of date and I have called for a total review. MP Peter Wellington

atepayers can now get a “Rate Card” for easy periodic payment of rates at either council or their local Post Office. Just contact or visit rates department of council on 5481 0633.

Your “Free Trees for Rates” are once again available from Cityfarm which is situated at the TAFE complex in Gympie on Cartwright Rd, and I am also hoping to get some dropped off at the Imbil Post Office. Mary Valley Heritage Railway had an astounding 32,000 passengers in 2009 and also attracts $2.4m into the area. Qld Tourism calculates that up to 22 paid jobs are created throughout the region due to MVHR. Ninety volunteers and 12 paid staff work on MVHR! So what a wonderful tourism attraction we have here right in our own backyard. We should all be so proud of this organisation and give them as much support as we can. If you would like to volunteer or help in any way please contact MVHR on 5482 7750. The Mary River Recovery Plan is being developed by BMRG (Burnett Mary Regional Group), MRCCC (Mary River Catchment Care) and FFI (Flora, Fauna Int) so hopefully it will be released soon. “Wild Watch” is on the MRCCC website to report sightings of rare and endangered wildlife and flora species. You can also report “pest animals/weeds” there too. MRCCC is always on the lookout for more volunteers to help monitor our local waterways too. Land for Wildlife registration forms part of the Healthy Habitats program which is widely promoted by BMRG, just go online and take a look at their web page. Rural road numbering is a vital part of our health and safety in our area. Remember that out emergency services use these new numbers to find your properties in times of emergencies. So if council have renumbered your roads please be sure to change your address accordingly to save all confusion. A public forum will be held on Thursday 28 October at 6pm at the Kandanga Bowls Club to further inform the Mary Valley residents of the progress that the Mary Valley Renewal Team have been making for the benefit of the Mary Valley. The speed limit through the township of Kandanga has been discussed by Council Traffic Advisory Committee and it has been decided that the speed will be reduced to 50Km/H, the 40Km/H will remain in place for the school zone. 1300ANIMAL (1300 264625) is a new initiative of the RSPCAs for the rescue of injured and distressed animals, so please add it to your mobile phones for future use. OUR COMMUNITY Cooran Tall Trees Festival

T

he Cooran Tall Trees Festival returns on Sunday 10 October from 10am to 7.30pm. Now in its second year, Tall Trees has a few new attractions including the ride-on mower convoy world record attempt (see article below) and short film festival. Tall Trees brings together local artists, musicians, singers and craft makers for a day of celebration, beginning with a street parade featuring the Noosa’s very own pipe band. Festival coordinator Ainsley Apirana says Cooran is a very special town with a strong sense of community and has an amazing array of talent. “It will be a day to remember when the clock strikes ten on the 10/10/10”, Ainsley said. “Our short film festival this year features the work of our local film makers and kicks off at sunset”. The popular decorate-a-bike and scooter competition returns this year and the skateboard championships and demonstrations will keep teenagers active across the day. The eco markets will feature organic fruit and vegies and all manner of interesting wares from around the area. The children from Cooran State School have been busy designing tiles with local artist Tracey Mutze-Butler for the local playground mural. “Tracey and the children did a wonderful job last year and they’re back to unveil the new tiles”, Ainsley said. Cooran Tall Trees will also feature workshops on worm farming, percussion, juggling and book making. Anyone interested in designing a new-look park for Cooran is invited to participate in special workshops. An art exhibition in the Cooran Hall features local paintings, sculpture, photography and installation art. Cooran wouldn’t be the same without live music, and there’s plenty of it on the day.

Street Festival attempts New World Record

et ready for a new world record at this year’s Cooran Street Festival. Ride-on mowers from across the Sunshine Coast hinterland will make history on Sunday 10 October, for the longest convoy of ride-on mowers in the world. Locals will gather at the Cooran sports oval at midday, to demonstrate their best dressed, most decrepit (but still going) and most environmentally friendly ride on mowers. Coordinator (and Cooran local) Shaun Walsh, says the town has really embraced this new world record attempt. “It’s about bringing the community together, and the Cooran street festival is the perfect place in which to do it”, he said. “This is not a speed event”. Festival organiser, Aisley Apirana says the world record attempt is a major part of the festivities on the day. “I can’t wait to see the colourful display of local ride-on mowers in convoy for first time, especially those on their last wheels”, she said. “The Cooran street festival is bigger and better this year with heaps of food, displays and entertainment”. Prizes will be awarded for the best dressed, most decrepit and most environmentally friendly ride-on mowers. Ride-on mowers can be dropped off on the day at the signed marshalling area from 9am at the Sports Oval, Queen Street, Cooran. For more info, contact Shaun Walsh on 0407 640 678 or by email shaunjosephwalsh@bigpond.com or festival organiser Ainsley Apirana on (07) 5485 0332.

From morning till dusk, Pioneer Park will come alive showcasing the talented musicians who live in this area. More info contact the festival coordinator Ainsley Apirana on 5485 0332 or emailsteveainsley@aapt.net.au

Billboard status for Mary Valley

W

ith school holidays around the corner, the Mary Valley has put itself in the spotlight to ensure it gets a cut of the tourist market. A grassroots marketing committee of Mary Valley representatives has used the popular “Mary Valley Country phrase for a stunning new billboard campaign on the Bruce Highway. The first billboard skin was installed this week to catch the eye of north-bound traffic near the Traveston Crossing entry to the Mary Valley. The tagline “come out to play underwrites the spontaneous fun portrayed by the image. The imagery of the billboard suggests that there is more to the Mary Valley than meets the eye. The billboard campaign is a collaborative effort between member groups of the Mary Valley marketing committee, specifically Gympie Cooloola Tourism, Mary Valley Inc and Bishopp Signs. The marketing committee is looking for activity champions who will drive the activities they are passionate about, for example, a camping champion and a horse riding champion. An open discussion with the community about this marketing direction will take place at the Kandanga Hotel on October 5 with details to be confirmed. Inquiries to Julie Worth on 5484 3195 or Kaili Parker-Price on 0447 053 244. The committee has also adopted the suggestion to market the valley by personalising “Mary as an active girl who doesn’t give up her secrets easily.
