KENILWORTH Memorial Service for Trudy Burnham

T

KENILWORTH CHEESE, WINE AND FOOD FEST

he third Kenilworth Cheese, Wine and Food Fest, has come and gone. What a great success it was. Over four thousand plus visitors came to put Kenilworth on the map. All the stall holders were very happy, sold their wares and have already booked for 2012. The Cheester Egg Hunts, Cheese Rolling and Boccheese events were extremely popular and kept folks busy throughout the day. Records were made and records were lost, but all in good fun. Mountains of good food, decadent and delicious was consumed. The local businesses, made up for some of the losses from floods and all the bad fortunes over the past months. Kenilworth was buzzing with happy smiling people. A very big thank you to the First Responders and all the volunteers who helped on the day. A big pat on the backs of the small very hard working committee, especially Tim and Di Donovan, the driving force behind the Food Fest.

A

memorial service will be held on Monday 23 May at the St Lukes Church, Philip Street Kenilworth at

11am.

Gertrude (Trudy) Burnham passed away on Monday 2 May 2011 in her adopted home town of Kenilworth; she was due to celebrate her 96th Birthday on 23 May. Trudy moved to Kenilworth in 2003 from UK to live with her only child Nina Cox in Coolabine. Trudy later made the move into town and purchased her first home at the tender age of 90. She was a very independent woman with high morals and a wicked sense of humour; she was well known throughout the community and enjoyed living in Kenilworth.

Another big thank you to our sponsors, Sunshine Coast Daily, Kenilworth Realty, Kenilworth Country Foods, Anaconda, Gitsham Fine Foods and last but not least the support of the Kenilworth Chamber of Commerce. All of those who donated in kind everything is greatly appreciated. The Anaconda Raffle was won by Alick Else of Redland Bay (see photo p.10). The Baker, The Butcher, The Cheese and Wine Maker will be back! again.

If you knew Trudy and you would like to celebrate her life you are invited to attend the memorial service on Monday 23 May which was to be her birthday. Photo left: Trudy at Lowestoft (UK), 1937 Below: Grandma and Evan, March 2011

KENILWORTH James Nash began it all

H

istory has recorded that James Nash discovered gold in Gympie in 1867. Previous to this find the Government had offered a reward of 3000 pounds for the discovery of a payable goldfield within 90 miles of Brisbane. Nash claimed the recompense but as Gympie was more than 90 miles from Brisbane he wasn’t entitled to the reward, the Government did give him a reduced sum of 1000 pounds. http:// en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Nash Reference Material “A Golden Past - A Golden Future’ 1967. Nash’s discovery is believed to have saved the Queensland economy http:// www.goldmuseum.spiderweb.com.au/educationalPDFs/ GoldFacts_InGympie.pdf Mineral exploration has continued throughout the Mary Valley ever since, with reports of gold mining at Traveston (1885) and Kandanga (1914). In 1918 deposits of manganese were discovered near Amamoor, Kandanga and Bollier. (Johnson and Sanders Wild Heart Bountiful Land, 2007). A rich find of manganese was also reported near Nanango in 1917 (The Chronicle 2.11.1917 p 5). The report continued as the mineral is at a very high figure at present…. The project would appear to be a really good one from a profit making point of view. In the district notes headed Amamoor (Mary Valley) (The Chronicle 11.11.1921 p.5) it was reported that large quantities of manganese are reaching the station daily, thanks to the result of dry roads, such as the manganese carters have not enjoyed for quite a long time. The article also reported the opening of an office in Amamoor of the Queensland National Bank Limited, Kandanga Branch and also decried the use of explosives for fishing.

jgMVVoice©2011

In the Eumundi Station Loadings noted in the Nambour Chronicle (11.2.1938, p.5) two trucks of manganese ore were among miscellaneous other items including 1639 boxes of butter railed to Brisbane.

In July 1947 Broken Hill Propriety signed a contract for 20,000 tons of manganese from a deposit on the side of Imbil Mountain. A second mine operated on Yabba Creek approximately 10 miles west of Imbil managed by a syndicate with a contract to BHP. Mining also operated in the Brooloo area in 1958. Mining in Imbil ceased in 1970-71 when the requirement for that particular grade of manganese declined (King, J. Imbil Jewel of the Mary Valley, 2001). It seems that mining is part of the history of development of the Mary Valley in much the same way agriculture, dairying and timber cutting have been. THE VISITORS ARE COMING

Our front cover story unique and different things to see, do and where to eat and sleep when you visit the Mary Valley. The “Travellers Companion” booklet which accompanies the DVD is the perfect size to fit in your glove box and to take with you to find those deemed to be the best the Hinterland has to offer. Set to a strict criteria to be one of the best, the Scenic Drives of Australia team scoured the Hinterland to find just what they were looking for. Featured businesses, of which there are over 100 throughout the Mary Valley, Blackall Range, Glasshouse Mountains, the magnificent drives around Yandina and Eumundi, showcase just what there is to see and do all in one go. Sit in your B&B and watch the DVD then decide where and what takes your fancy and bring the ‘Traveller’s Companion’ along with you. There is also a huge website with video clips that help you decide what to do. The “Best of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland “ is the first pilot vehicle of the upcoming series and is based on a vertically integrated tourism marketing model like no other ever seen before. Enmeshing video with a travel companion book and a website so the new style and well informed visitors to our Mary valley know what they can do and where to stay before they arrive... the ‘visitors’ are coming!

Currently showing “... the lightness of being...”, featuring paintings by Pat Cale and ceramic sculptures by Vit Martinek. Typical exhibitions feature two to three artists in the main area and the members’ work in the annexe. The gallery is manned Thursday to Sunday 10am – 2pm by the members. We are currently seeking to attract interested visual artists from our area to participate in future exhibitions and workshops. Membership is $50 per year, following acceptance by current members of six images and the signing of a Code of Conduct form. This is a unique opportunity for visual artists to show their work in this space for minimum financial outlay. We urge you to contact us either at the gallery or ring 5488 6376.

Pancakes for Brekky at Kenilworth SCC

enilworth State Community College kids love their chaplain, Boyd Eime. Boyd has been working at the school since 2007 and is very involved in activities at the school. From cooking pancakes on Tuesday mornings, to helping the kids solve maths problems, Boyd helps out students, parents and teachers every minute of the two days a week he works here. During the lunch breaks Boyd organises various games and activities for the kids such as handball, table tennis and bike riding on the oval. He works in classes supporting teachers and students as he helps in maths and English groups. Boyd has been the initiator of the Active After School Communities program at the school and has encouraged a number of parents to undertake the training required to become deliverers of this programme that involves kids in fun sport activities after school. This year Boyd is helping the school extend the Leadership Program for Year 7s. He has assisted Behaviour Support Teacher, Annette Kachel on the first of our Leadership Activity Days, is helping students organise a disco, Year 7 overnight camp and will join our Year 3-7 students on their annual camp again this year. The Annual Chaplaincy Support lunch on May 17 at Montville State School is an opportunity for the wider community to show their support for the chaplaincy programme and to support school chaplaincy. Keep up the great work, Boyd.

H

ow did you travel to school? Were you a teacher’s pet or were you the class terror?

What did you have in your lunch box? What games did you play in the school yard? Remember the old school days is a writing and storytelling project leading up to the Reality Writes festival (2224 July) and culminating with a launch of the finished work in Seniors Week, August 2011. The project is organised by the Sunshine Hinterland Writers’ Centre and supported by the Department of Community Services as a Seniors’ Week activity. Project coordinator Bernice Childs, said the participants will be encouraged to write a collection of stories that focus on their school days. She explained the idea behind the project was to create a supportive environment for participants to record and share their stories. “By understanding more about the early lives of our older community members, we create a platform for dialogue. Every generation has experienced its own pressures and difficulties; pleasures and ambitions - they may be very different, but they are very real and very important to the people involved.” Bernice said she expected that some participants will have lived in the region for most of their lives and others may have relocated here later in life. “This makes for a wide range of backgrounds and through the different stories, a better understanding of the various influences on other people’s lives” she said. The participants will be guided by a professional writer/ editor and the workshop sessions are free. An introductory session will be held at the Cooroy Library at 9.30am on Tuesday 31 May. From there, weekly two hour sessions will be held over six consecutive weeks. All workshops will be held in the Cooroy Library. Interested people can register by calling 07 5472 0464, emailing culcon@ozemail.com.au or call into the Cooroy Library for a registration form. Places are limited.

MARY VALLEY AT THE MOVIE

C

inema Pomona Film Society continues meeting every fortnight on Tuesdays at 7pm at the Lions’ Den (old Scout hall), Cnr. Mountain and Hospital Streets, Pomona (turn left into Mountain St. from Reserve St., and it is up in front of your on the left). Screening Tuesday 31 May 2011 at 7pm is Comrades In Dreams (South Korea 2006 – 1h46mins - G). Comrades in Dreams is an entertaining world tour of small-town movie houses and the dedicated cineastes who maintain them. Four lives that could not be more different and a single passion that unites them: the unconditional love for their cinemas, somewhere at the end of the world. Director Uli Gaulke brings together four cinema makers from North Korea, America, India and Africa and follows their efforts to make their audiences dream every night. They live thousands of kilometres apart from one another and yet are chasing the same dream. In doing so, the film dives into a set of fascinating lives where stories from the everyday and from the silver screen frequently merge into something magical. We get the chance to savour repeatedly the entertaining stories occurring in the orbit of these entertainment

palaces. Tears shed for the Great Leader, cowboys at church, jealous wives and how the Titanic came to North Korea are just a few of the anecdotes shared with us, all told in loving detail. The unifying power of dreams brings our heroes close together. And the great quest for a little happiness is a constant leitmotif and reminds us that the best stories are not only told on screen. New members welcome and can join at the door on screening nights. Doors open 6.30pm. For more information ring 0408 879 679 or 0407 622 398.

MALENY A first for the Maleny Show, two big bands to celebrate the show

T

he Maleny Show, held this year on Friday and Saturday the 3 and 4 June is very lucky to have two big bands being showcased in a first for Maleny and the Hinterland. On Friday 3 June the Qld Police Cops in Kilts Pipe Band will be performing and leading the grand parade, and on Saturday 4 June, the Royal Australian Navy Big Band will also perform and lead the parade. This is a great opportunity to experience all they have to offer, and both will bring different flavours to the show. The show is open both days from 8am with fireworks on Friday night and the rodeo on Saturday night.

Other entertainment this year includes the dreamtime reptile pit, the spectacular rings of fire event on Friday night, motorcycle stunt riders, electronic cow demonstrations, aboriginal dancers, woodchops, pavilion exhibits, beef, dairy and poultry exhibits, vintage and speedway cars, the Maleny lighthorse troup, side show alley, working dog displays, battle of the bands, ute muster, whip cracking competitions, puppet shows, fashion parades and lots lots more. Great entertainment on Saturday afternoon will also be the Sommer’s Fuel Gumboot Ironman competition. This event creates a lot of laughs from not only the audience but the competitors as well as they move hay bales, push wheelbarrows, climb fences and the list goes on. Trevor and Maree Sommer have been generous with their sponsorship over the past few years and it is the wonderful spirit of community businesses that will ensure this year’s Maleny Show is bigger, brighter and more fun for the whole family. See you at the show.

GREASE - THE ONE THAT YOU WANT! COMES TO NOOSA

fter more than 30 years, Grease is still the ‘one that you will want’ and Good Shepherd Lutheran College secondary students will be providing the opportunity for locals to relive this popular music fest of singing and dancing. Presented at The J in Noosa from 27-28 May, the talented students of the college will follow Sandy and Danny, the ‘T Birds’ and the ‘Pink Ladies’ as they take you on an entertaining, musical journey through the ups and downs of friendship and love. Rydell High’s senior class of ducktailed, hot-rodding “T-Birds” and their gum-snapping, hipshaking “Pink Ladies” in bobby sox and pedal pushers, evoke the look and sound of the 1950s in this rollicking musical.

Grease is arguably one of the most successful and popular musicals of all time and now locals have the chance to relive this popular musical professionally presented in the state-of-the-art theatre at The J. See Grease -The Musical presented by Good Shepherd Lutheran College secondary students at The J, Noosa Heads with performances at 7pm on Friday 27 and Saturday 28 May and a 1pm matinee session on Saturday 28 May.

etter traffic flow and better protection from flooding.

That’s what commuters can look forward to when Sunshine Coast Council replaces the current “Cambroon Bridge” on Mary River Bridge Road, Cambroon. Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay said the current timber bridge had reached the end of its serviceable life. “The current single lane timber bridge is in poor structural condition and is load limited to 2.5 tonnes,” she said. “The new bridge will be two lanes in width and it will also be built higher for improved flood immunity. In order to construct the new reinforced concrete bridge, council will need to close Mary River Bridge Road at the bridge site from 3 May approximately six months.” Cr McKay said commuters could detour via Eastern Mary River Road and Maleny - Kenilworth Road during this construction period. “I acknowledge that some residents will be inconvenienced while works are in progress, however the finished product will be a very positive one for the local community,” she said. “Construction of this bridge has also been timed to avoid the summer flood season and the breeding and nesting season of the Mary River Turtle which is endemic to the Mary River and is listed as endangered under state and federal legislation. This turtle species is also recognised as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Nature Resources.” Asset Management and Works Portfolio Councillor Ted Hungerford said the “Cambroon Bridge” project was part of council’s 10-year bridge replacement program that maintained a watch on around 400 bridges across the region, including 180 road bridges. “Council will continue to commit between $3 million and

s the weather cools down the Crystal Waters monthly ‘Live on the Deck’ series will warm you up with Sunday afternoon sessions. From 1pm on the 29 May, Crystal Waters is proud to present sDva (pronounced D-vah) which is simply the Macedonian word for “two” which expresses the great love of playing together as a duo shared by its two members: Linsey Pollack and Tunji Beier. Linsey and Tunji have been performing together since 1996, creating improvisations and compositions that draw on the traditions of Macedonia and South India. Linsey’s collection of wind instruments is unique with 30 years experience in making and experimenting with wind instruments. He has come up with new single reed designs, such as the various Clarinis (narrow bored clarinets) made from bamboo, wood, aluminium and glass as well as various hybrid bagpipes based on the Gaida (Macedonian bagpipe) and also the conical bore Saxillo. These wind instruments are combined with Tunji’s Mridangam (South Indian Carnatic drum,) Kanjira (South Indian tambourine with a lizard skin), Jaw Harps and other percussion instruments that Tunji has mastered while living in India, Nigeria and Europe. sDva will be supported by local Gypsy outfit Diddakoi, who were a hit at last years Festuri Festival. Doors open 12.30pm, $18/$15 concession, Wine Bar, coffee and snacks available. Crystal Waters located off Kilcoy Lane Conondale. OUR COMMUNITY DAGUN STATION GROWERS MARKET EVERY SATURDAY AFTERNOON FROM 2PM

Place layer of eggplant in baking tray. Then napoli sauce, mozzarella and parmesan, until pan is full, ending with parmesan.

ome and join your friends at the opening of the Dagun Station Growers Market on May 28 at 2pm.

Bake at 180deg for 40-45 minutes until heated through and cheese is melted.

C

Fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables from the Mary Valley will be available every Saturday from 2-5pm along with preserves, teas, olive oil, bush tucker, native tubestock, herbs and food plants. Dagun Growers Market operates under a ‘CareFarmed’ registered trademark. This means the produce is grown in healthy soil with care taken to ensure no toxic chemicals or sprays are used. Care is taken to minimise handling, storage and transport to maximise freshness and nutritional value. Care is taken to continually improve and maintain the state of the soil and the local environment. Graeme from Witjuti Grub Bushfood Nursery will be also there to answer your questions on his incredibly diverse range of native plants. It is estimated there were upwards of 5000 different bushfood plant species across Australia utilised and harvested seasonally by Aboriginal people. For centuries ‘bushfood’ plants have been an integral part of our indigenous people’s staple diet and lifestyle. Take home a native food plant that suits your area and reap the rewards. Do you like to grow your own vegies and wish to make some extra money with all that excess? Perhaps you are a dedicated small crop grower? Arrange for your produce to be sold at the market under our co-operative system or run your own stall. All produce will be labeled CareFarmed, organic or conventional to offer the consumer choice. For more information please call Elaine Bradley on 5484 3749 or Lesa Bell on 5488 6595. There are rampant chokoes, pumpkins and eggplant coming from the garden at the moment. Try this eggplant recipe for something different. Eggplant Parmigiana 3-4 eggs,1 and 1/4 cups grated parmesan, 2 cups bread crumbs, oil for frying, 2 large eggplants peeled and sliced ½ inch thick, prepared Napoli sauce, sliced mozzarella. In a bowl beat eggs with ¼ cup grated cheese. Heat ½ inch of oil in a skillet. One at a time dip eggplant slices in egg mixture to coat, then crumbs. When oil is hot but not smoking, fry eggplant working in batches until lightly browned. Rest on paper towels.

OUR COMMUNITY Wellington’s Way

W

ine and Cheese a winner Jenny and I visited the Cheese Wine and Food Festival at Kenilworth over Easter, and what a success this event was for Kenilworth. Congratulations to all the people involved, organising committee and all the members of our community who helped make it such a success. I look forward to the next one. The whole town was abuzz - there is no doubt that the committee has found a good recipe at this time and place on the events calendar. Kenilworth Museum AGM Thank you on behalf of the community to the Kenilworth and District Historical Association committee, all of whom were re-elected unopposed to their positions. Congratulations for continuing to keep the doors open at our museum and maintain our local history. I understand this team has been working in their current positions for five years now. I always enjoy attending the AGM and was glad to chair the election of officer-bearers, and am happy to continue as Patron of this association. Congratulations again to president Lenore Meldrum, vice president Cecil Pearson, secretary Blair Meldrum and treasurer Clem Hassall. Mapleton Forest horse trails A number of horse riding enthusiasts have contacted me recently concerned about the permanence of the horse riding trails in the Mapleton Forest. I took this issue up with the Minister of Environment, who has advised that the majority of the Mapleton Forest Reserve will be declared national park by the end of this year, but trails will continue to be retained for riders. She confirmed that the network of trails currently used by horse riders in the reserve will remain as strips of forest reserve to provide for horse riding. Riding enthusiasts from the Hinterland communities have worked hard over recent years to retain these tracks for riders as the government has reviewed national park useage. Meet me in Cooroy I will be holding my next Cooroy meeting in the Cooroy RSL boardroom on Thursday 2 June, from 10am. Anyone who would like to meet with me can organise an appointment by contacting my Nambour office on 5441 6933.

IMBIL ANZAC DAY 2011

T

he Mary Valley community, despite the threat of rain, commemorated its 2011 Anzac Day this year in Imbil. Record numbers attended both the dawn and day services, no doubt swelled by the Easter weekend holiday visitors. Mr David Gibson, MP, also attended the dawn service. The dawn service breakfast was again provided by the Mary Valley Lions Club who worked very hard to cater for the large number who stayed for breakfast. The midday luncheon was well attended with a good attendance of 60 veterans, ex-service personnel, legacy widows and invited guests. The Mary Valley Lions Club cater for the breakfast every year and the Mary Valley RSL Sub-Branch, on behalf of the community, thanks them for their support. The march was well supported and our thanks also to the Naval Cadets from training ship “ONSLOW” (Gympie Unit) who provided the catafalque party for the first time at the memorial. Our thanks also to the splendid effort of the Gympie Caledonian Pipe Band on their third appearance for the day having previously played and marched at Tin Can Bay and Gympie before travelling to Imbil. Our thanks also to the Blackall Range Car Club, for provision of the old Rolls Royce by one of their members from Conondale for our frail veterans. We also thank our local schools, Amamoor, Dagun, Imbil and Kandanga, local emergency services and Imbil Police services for their participation and assistance. The services were well conducted with local councillor Julie Walker presiding and Mrs Kaylene Mitchell reading the poem at the Dawn Service. Unfortunately our Chaplain, Rev. Iain Watt was struck down by illness the previous day and was unable to attend. So we had to do without the chaplain on the day. We also experienced some problems with the sound system on the day. Our thanks to both the Imbil and Kandanga communities for raising over $350 for Legacy at their afternoon functions on the day. Last but not least, our thanks to Gympie Regional Council staff for their preparations of Imbil Memorial Park for the day and Arandale Turf for donation of the new turf at the RSL Hall. Our next commemoration will be Remembrance Day at Imbil Memorial Park. Ian Stubbins Honary Secretary Mary Valley RSL Sub-Branch

LASERS IN THE MARY VALLEY

I

n the 80’s and the 90’s, Serge Douw and Bruno Kempter worked in the LASER light show and music industry in Europe, rivaling each other for the multi-million dollar show markets. Amazingly, after becoming neighbours by chance here in the Mary Valley, these old LASER Lords have decided to lay down their weapons and join forces so that they can offer their 60 years of collective entertainment experience to the local area.

After producing a spectacular LASER show from the roof of their LASER bus at the Mary River Festival in Kandanga 2010, Serge and Bruno decided to power all future events purely with solar energy. Klaus Langner of the Latronics solar company in Caloundra stepped up to support their ventures which led to Bill Hauritz from the Woodford Folk Festival commissioning them to project a breathtaking ¼ km sized LASER grid in the sky over the Woodford Folk Festival grounds in 2010-2011. The LASERs ran flawlessly for four hours over 10 nights through gusty storms, heavy rain and fog, producing a constantly changing effect, orchestrated by the weather. Many of the visitors at the festival commented on how peaceful, spacey and futuristic the ambiance was. To make the LASER events more accessible to towns with small budgets, Serge and Bruno are inviting further businesses to step up as sponsors. The duo are aiming to generate over one million visits per year to their website so sponsors will have a huge amount of exposure. So if you are planning an event which normally uses fireworks or you are a sponsor who would like to get good exposure, give the guys a call now on 07 5484 5963 or visit www.SolarLaserProductions.com
