he second Kenilworth Cheese Wine and Food Festival will be held at Kenilworth Town Park and Cheese Factory on Easter Saturday 3 April. The morning will commence with the region’s best Egg and Bacon Burgers at 7am followed by Queenslands only Cheese Rolling Contest: so get your bowling arms ready as it will be a bigger and better event with more challenges in the course this year. The winner will receive a beautiful basket of Kenilworth Cheese and bread from our local Kenilworth Bakery.

enilworth S t a t e Community College is in the enviable position of having an excellent computer/ student ratio. We almost have one computer for two students!
Kenilworth State Community College boasts two computer labs, six computers in the library available for the students every day, as well as a number in the junior classroom. Students take advantage of the computers by: researching and browsing on the internet, doing assignment work, and playing maths and literacy games. Having such a high computer/student ratio means that students always have access to a computer and everyone gets the ‘hands on’ experience. The computers in the library are booked out every lunchtime, and it is not uncommon to see the older children sitting beside a Prep or Year One student showing them the ways of the computer!

A
ustralia and its history was the common theme in Term 1 at Kenilworth State Community College. All the classes learnt about Aboriginal art and some magnificent pieces were produced. The Prep to Yr 2 class studied Dreamtime stories and enjoyed reading and responding to several stories. The year 2/3/4/5 class learnt about creation stories, what Australia was like before the European settlement and what life was like for a child of nine in England awaiting transportation on the First Fleet. The year 5/6/7 class looked at the unit Shaping Our Nation, which included: the gold rush, the stolen generation and post war immigration. The children were all enthralled and amazed at our colourful history with the result that a lot of effort was put into their individual pieces of work. We are all looking forward to Term Two !

Wet Conditions stops tHE Conondale Easter Sunday Rodeo for 2010
I
t is great regret that the Conondale Bush Racing Club has yet again been forced to cancel their annual Easter Sunday Rodeo due to wet conditions. The committee made the difficult decision during the third week of March to call off the event after months of planning. “The whole community was working together this year to make the Rodeo bigger than ever,” President of the Committee Ian Fleiter said. “ We had to also cancel 2009 and 2008 could not go ahead due to the EI virus” This means that the small community will go without the much needed funds it raises from the Rodeo for another year. Conondale people and its community groups will not have the Race Club to back them as much this year due to the major fundraising event having to be cancelled for a third time in a row. Ian went on the say “Ian and Felicity Smith are kind enough each year to donate their ground for us to stage the event on, but this year with recent and ongoing rain, the grounds are just in no condition to use and would take some weeks to dry out.” The Club is still staging their Rodeo Princess Dance on Saturday 27 March at the Conondale Hall at 7.30pm. This is a great night out, with dance music provided by the Sunshine Swing Band, and bar and supper as well. So please come along!

KENILWORTH The Great War
I
t is not difficult to imagine the impact of World War I on the small country community of Kenilworth when 27 of their young men went off to fight for “King and Country” after declaration of war in 1914. The community was closely linked to each of those young men – many had been presented with some token of appreciation – a wallet or gold watch suitably inscribed from “the people of Kenilworth”. Newspaper reports of the time kept everyone informed of the status of their fighting men. In The Chronicle of November 16, 1917 the headline: Our lads catching it Our boys at the front have been having a rather rough time of it lately. News has been received that Pte Dave Pickering has again been severely wounded, for the second time. He had only just recovered from his last wound, and had been in the firing line only a few days when ill luck again befell him. Pte E. Allen is reported missing, whilst his brother Henry has just been reported wounded. Bombardier L. Potter is reported wounded for the third occasion. Pte J. Pearce is still carrying a piece of shrapnel in his knee, which the doctors cannot extricate, but he is convalescing. Pte D. Ower is now recovering from an ugly bayonet wound in the knee accidentally caused by the weapon of one of his cobbers, whilst dodging bombs.

Honour board Matters are well in hand for the erection of a hammered copper honour board in the local hall. The board will soon be completed and the unveiling ceremony will take place shortly. In the November 23 edition of The Chronicle it was reported that Pte W. Sharry had been wounded at the front. An account followed of a Hamper Social having its object the raising of sufficient funds to send a Christmas hamper to each of our local soldier boys at the front. Toward the close of the proceedings Mr. H. Pickering announced the financial result of the social as a little over £12. He mentioned that a parcel, value 17/6 was ordered

ndrea Risby-Jones and Jalberto Maldonado organise workshops for children aged 10 to 13 years focusing on rhythmic adventures, songs, movement, vocal fun, group participation, improvisation, percussion instrument playing and making as well as circle activities… Jalberto Maldonado is a musician, educator, performer, specialising in Afro-Latin and Caribbean rhythms and culture. During the past eighteen years he has shared his passion with adults and children in and out of the Sunshine Coast. Andrea Risby-Jones - BA Mus (USA) and Grad Dip Education. In this area since 1999, Andrea teaches strings and leads a children’s choir on the Sunshine Coast. Andrea is a registered teacher and performs regularly with the Offenbach Quartet.

he Far A Way endurance riders club invites all riders to join us on our eventful weekend at Imbil Showgrounds over the Easter weekend 1-5 April 2010. This is our clubs first ride for the season and this year we are incorporating two FEI events into our schedule. The CEI 84KM and CEI 120KM will help more horses and riders gain qualifications with the CEI being a qualifying ride for the Young Horse Challenge. Our signature Far A Way 320km marathon is our main event and is one of the nine events held over the five days. Unlike previous years, the club has decided to move the second half of the major events from the Monday to the Sunday. The idea will ease the overall workload for many volunteers however still allowing riders to enjoy competing in more than one event over the weekend. MARY VALLEY Mary Valley meetings Fed into draft community plan
P
eople from Kenilworth to Dagun were able to add more ideas to the draft plan for re-building the Mary Valley at the March community meetings. Kenilworth residents gathered on Thursday 18 March and the Federal community met on Friday 9 March led through a brainstorming session along the lines of that used by renowned facilitator Peter Kenyon in Kandanga. The meetings continued at Kandanga Hall on 22 and 25 March at Ridgewood Hall and Imbil RSL Hall on 29 March. The Mary Valley Renewal Team gathered more ideas to feed into a comprehensive Mary Valley community and economic plan for the future of the valley and to get feedback on the draft plan so far. Spokesperson for the team, Glenda Pickersgill, said the draft plan was a working document and would be available shortly on the website www.maryvalleyrenewal.org to ensure it was available to the majority of the community of the Mary Valley to continue the conversations around renewal and give feedback on-line. Encouraging diverse sustainable agriculture is the top priority already highlighted by the community, followed by branding the valley, showcasing the environment, river access, developing a retirement place for farmers, and securing the region as a food bowl for the south-east corner of the State. The meetings led up to the return of Peter Kenyon for the “Leading the Way” leadership, business and community planning two-day conference on April 8 and 9 at Garapine outdoor education centre, Kandanga.
At this conference, the community and economic plan was reviewed and refined in detail, as well as the community participating in leadership and community engagement training, which armed locals with tools to action the plan. Bookings are essential (see ad below) for the two days with Peter Kenyon. Mary Valley residents will pay just $9 per day, but there are limited places open to participants from neighbouring centres at $25 per day. A business dinner will be held at the Gympie Civic Centre on April 8 at $40 per head, where Mr Kenyon will appear as guest speaker to give some of his popular business advice. Thanks to the many people who have helped us, with the Kenilworth Bowls Club supplying a venue and entertainment for the “troops” and supporters after the march and wreath-laying ceremony. Our president and local butcher, Jim McKillop, for supplying meat for the sausage sizzle beforehand and Liz from 4-Square for other supplies. Our local pub manager, Steve for his support, the S.E.S., First Response Group and the Rural Fire Brigade for being on hand to ensure our safety and of course the Mary Valley Voice for their help in the advertising and these little ditties. he Eumundi Live Music Festival will take place on the weekend of May 14 -16. Organised by MASC, the festival will be held in conjunction with the Australian Body Art Carnival and will see the streets of Eumundi come alive with a colourful extravaganza of art, music and performance. The Eumundi Amphitheatre site will host the ticketed event, showcasing a broad range of national and local acts and will include a children’s area, workshops, a licensed bar and a chai tent. Dick Caplick Park will play host to free entertainment including school bands and community groups. Buskers and street performers will be invited to perform in Lonergan Lane. The promotion and exposure of our local musicians is a key motivation for the establishment of the Eumundi Live Festival. Naturally, MASC will seek high quality national acts to assist in attracting a wider audience but will aim to have a high percentage of local content. MASC’s long term vision is to see Eumundi Live grow alongside the Australian Body Art Carnival, presenting a high-class multi-faceted festival experience that offers a platform for our local musicians and artists. he annual Cooroora Wood and Craft Festival at the Cooroy RSL Memorial Hall will be held on the 7 and 8 May 2010 and will feature outstanding examples of woodturning, carving, pyrography and sawmilling. There will be timber slabs for sale and for the first time an interclub competition which will bring together possibly the best display of woodcraft in Queensland. There will be other stalls featuring a variety of handcrafts. Doors will open at 8am with a $2 entry fee. Light refreshments will be available in the hall, catered by the Cooroy Scouts Group. ympie Regional Council held an information session in the Mary Valley on the 18 of March on the Draft Wide Bay Burnett State Planning Regulatory Provisions (2009), its implications specifically for the Mary Valley area in the Wide Bay Burnett region and submission dates closing on 30.03.10. Council recognised that the Mary Valley has undergone several planning scenarios over the past several years with the proposed Traveston Crossing dam. The information session was intended to provide further information on the State’s Draft plan to assist the community understand its impacts on the Mary Valley and to assist with the current Mary Valley Renewal community planning activities. The Department of Infrastructure’s web site provides information and maps on the Draft Plan and Regulatory Provisions. http://www.dip.qld.gov.au/regional-planning/ draft-state-regulatory-provisions.html Business and Industry is now a new section on Gympie Regional Council’s website where you will find the Gympie Regional Investment Prospectus and the Gympie Regional Economic Profile, links to Federal, State and Local Government sites, Chambers of Commerce and Queensland Business Organisations. The GRC Economic Development Unit can be contacted on 5481 0744. Tourism Promotion for the Mary Valley and other Gympie regions now has a presence on You Tube, log on and check them out or watch them on www.cooloola.org.au Council Divisions will be investigated by council with staff being asked to investigate options and report back to council. Any suggested changes to GRC’s current status will have to be submitted to the State Government for consideration. Public consultation is currently underway for Council’s Public Art Plan, if you missed out on attending one of the sessions you can still contribute by doing an online survey on councils web site under ‘what’s new’ or get a hard copy at the gallery, libraries or council offices. enilworth Community meeting It was great to be able to attend the community meeting at Kenilworth Bowls Club and see the level of support
and interest from locals on ways to better promote Kenilworth, and try to build new industries in the area. Thanks to the Kenilworth Chamber of Commerce for organising this meeting. Kenilworth school P&C re-elected I always enjoy returning to Kenilworth State Community College - it is great to see the school doing so well under the leadership of Principal Sue Brieschke and our strong P&C Association. As Chairman of the election of office bearers at the College’s Annual General Meeting I must say it was the shortest election I’ve ever been involved in, with the previous committee re-elected unopposed. Congratulations to President Marcus Anstey, vice President Greg Hopkins, Secretary Robyn Pfeiffer, and Treasurer Shelly Wright. Northern Pipeline compensation meeting I am holding public meeting for people whose properties are affected by the Northern Interconnector Pipeline project, (between Eudlo and Lade McDonald) at 5.30pm on March 30 at the Woombye Bowls Club. I encourage you to come along to the meeting and be prepared to work together with one voice on this compensation issue. I met recently with department staff to clarify a range of issues regarding land owners’ rights. I hope to be able to clarify any issues that you may have and assist with guidance on matters involving compensation claims against the government for any possible damages. School volunteers get better protection It was great to see common sense amendments to the Civil Liability and Other Legislation Amendment Bill supported by all State Members of Parliament. Our school Parent and Citizens’ Associations will now come under the definition of ‘Community Organisation’ which entitles them to protection from liability in the same way as volunteers are protected within other community organisations. While many school volunteers may not even be aware that they did not have full liability protection in the past, this new definition of their organisation means they are now recognised. The other significant amendment which will benefit people diagnosed with asbestos-related illnesses is that as a result of changes to this law there is now no statute of limitation period to slow their legal claims. This will improve access to justice and reduce the cost and stress associated with pursuing a claim. Swine Flu Vaccination Program Queensland Health is currently running free vaccination clinics for Human swine flu at state schools at weekends during Term One. Anyone interested in taking advantage of this program should ring 13 43 25 84 for the location of their closest clinic or further information. No referrals or appointments are necessary. University Roadshow Visits Noosa High
n Thursday 11 March, Year 12 students from Noosa District State High School had the opportunity to learn about tertiary education through their attendance at the University Roadshow. Representatives from several organisations and institutions were on hand to answer the myriad of student questions, ranging from courses to accommodation options. These representatives also gave information about important dates, such as the QTAC (Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre) application deadline, as well as encouraging students to apply for scholarships to help defray the costs associated with tertiary education. The advantages and disadvantages of living at home, on or near-campus accommodation and off-campus accommodation gave students an insight into the pitfalls associated with their increased freedom once they leave school. Noosa District State High School students will receive further information about QTAC preferences and the QCST which the students will complete later in the year.

Reality Bites organisers announce 2010 festival dates

unshine Coast Hinterland Writers’ Centre has announced the dates for this year’s Reality Bites. Director Annette Hughes said the festival will be held over two consecutive weekends 23 July - 1 August 2010 with a workshop program being organised for the mid-week days. Reality Bites was initiated and managed by the creative unit of the old Noosa Council in 2008. With the loss of council’s project management, and a strong desire to keep the festival going and growing, a local group of

All levels of government are supporting the festival and the Hinterland Writers’ Centre committee is currently approaching local businesses and organisations interested in being associated with Reality Bites. To date, the Australia Council for the arts, Arts Queensland and the Sunshine Coast Regional Council are providing grants and in-kind support. Since its inception, Reality Bites has presented some of Australia’s sharpest minds and gifted storytellers, covering a range of issues and ideas, and attracting equally diverse audiences. Ms Hughes said that the 2010 program will be as entertaining and thought provoking as last year’s which presented thirty three authors, journalists, publishers, editors and film makers. This huge four day festival incorporates three venues demonstrating all aspects of steam driven transport and industry. The Woodworks Museum will have blacksmithing, traditional hand tool demos, wood chopping, chainsaw carvings, whittler, woodworkers, vintage steam engine display, portable steam engines, stationary and miniature steam engines, steam driven bush sawmill, operational drag saw and the Blitz Truck display throughout the four days. On Saturday the woodworks will be hosting a Sawmilling Competition with the finals on the Sunday, with a Timber Auction following at 1pm. Don’t miss the Axe Vs Chainsaw contest showcasing some of our talented local champions. Polley’s Coaches will be operating an hourly bus shuttle every day between our three venues from Jaycees Way, Old Gympie Railway Station, Woodworks Museum and the Gympie Gold Mining Museum.
