Bunya wins by a Splash!

anta arrived with his lights on and horn jingled fire truck at the Kenilworth Showground on the 24 December. A crowd of excited children followed by their parents greeted him. Santa and his helpers always put in a lot of effort to make our local children happy. He is well prepared and has presents for children of all ages. This Christmas celebration would not have been successful without our local community who always digs deep and volunteer their times, to support this event. A special thanks to the Kenilworth Rural Fire Brigade for lending the “Santa’s Sled” and to Santa’s helpers who made this night a success for everybody. More photos on colour page 9. Kenilworth CelebrateD Year 7 Graduation
here were plenty of splashes and cheers when Kenilworth State Community College held their Swimming Carnival in the last week of the school year. The competition was as hot as the temperatures as the three house teams battled it out to be the champions on the day. Bunya won by a mere two points from Blue Gum and Cedar. It was great to see the level of participation by the students with all contestants earning points for their house. The littlies did a great job with the aid or kickboards and older student helpers in their races and the whole school participated in the “crowd surfing” event. The parent-teacher-student relay was cheered on by the students enthusiastically and although they started out the leaders, the teachers just couldn’t keep up with the pace and ended up coming in third. A huge amount of work goes into making the carnival a great day and we would like to thank the swimming pool committee for all their help, especially opening the canteen so that we could keep up our energy levels. The wonderful parents who came along to cheer the students on and to help with time-keeping did an awesome job as did the teachers and of course, our magnificent students. enore Meldrum, President of the Kenilworth and District Historical Association expressed her appreciation to Councillor Paul Tatton for his assistance in enabling the installation of the disabled access footpath by the Sunshine Coast Regional Council contractors.
T
he Year 7 Graduation was a celebrated on Thursday 10 December at Kenilworth State Community College. Mr Peter Wellington, Mrs Shirley Moreland and Snr Constable Craig Trethewey presented Academic, Sporting and Citizenship Awards to our outstanding students. Each student received a Graduation Certificate with an individual commentary as they celebrated this milestone in their lives. The whole school shared lunch with a Graduation cake made by Zoe McDonald, one of the Year 7 students. Zoe also made 90 cupcakes so the whole school had celebration cake! Sue Brieschke

Night Splash at the Pool
ulie Glassop, the Kenilworth Swimming Pool kiosk coordinator organised a fund raising event, “Night Splash at the Pool” on 5 December 2009. The Splash was a great success and appreciated by the children and their parents in the simmering conditions before Christmas. Julie’s father Eric and partner Barbara worked the BBQ to feed the hungry mob throughout the evening. Thanks Eric and Barbara. A big thank you also goes to the local Kenilworth butcher for the sausages and our local bakery who supplied the bread. Volunteers who are doing a fantastic job running the Kenilworth pool, without their help the pool would not be available to the community for fun and recreation. The money raised will be used to buy much needed equipment for the pool. A big thank you to Julie for organising a great event! There will be another one soon with a date yet to be released. We always need more volunteers, so anyone willing to give some time please see the ladies at the kiosk. Without your help there would not be a swimming pool in Kenilworth, we need you!

Developers claiming the Government are not making land available, the Government saying there’s plenty of land available and so on. It doesn’t paint a pretty picture. But for those of us who have our own homes or in partnership with the banks, not all is lost. This is the time to cheer ourselves up and stop the rot, to repair, maintain, improve and freshen up our abodes, put our next dollar where it counts most and remember for every dollar you put in your home with sound advice from qualified trades people your home’s value even at these economic times goes up by two. The present economic climate and predicted forecast is sure to apply more pressure on the brake pedal and put more moths in our wallets.

ane Schulz’s effort to save the Mary River was awarded with an RSL Youth Development Grant. Tane is an approaching year 11 student at Nambour High and was eligible to apply for the grant offered through the Bond University. The winning application will help Tane to buy a kayak and organise a trip on the Mary River and create a photographic record of the beautiful and distinct river system, wild life and possible environmental issues. The photographs will be displayed in a photographic exhibition to the community in and around Kenilworth on a date yet to be set. Congratulations Tane well done!

Fellow Ratepayers and Electors It is necessary for me to draw your attention to a proposal that has been submitted by the Home Department to amend the boundaries of Div.1 in such a manner that, in my opinion, would be a detriment to our interests. It must be recognised that the property owners within the Maroochy Shire west of the Mary River who now make Brooloo their railway centre should be transferred to the Widgee Shire. There are other property owners who also find Brooloo more convenient than the railway centre within the Maroochy Shire. By all means let these people who desire transfer to Widgee for this reason get what they want; but there are a number of us who have never been consulted on the matter, who are quite content to remain as we are, who apparently are being forced into a proposal which so far as we can ascertain has never been submitted to either the Shire Council or ourselves. We have ascertained that the Shire Council favoured the exclusion of all properties west of the Mary River, such being so, why include so many other properties in the proposed transfer the owners of which will be in precisely the same position as those on the western side of the river viz., pay their rates to one Shire and use the roads of the adjoining Shire. Whatever alteration may be made, let us try and make the amendment to the Shire boundaries as equitable as possible. With this object in view I desire to draw your attention to a public meeting

his accident happened on boxing day when there were NO trucks around, what is going to happen when the 40 quarry trucks start? As you can see on the right hand side of the second photo the Kin Kin Pomona range needs huge maintenance as there is erosion happening under the road. The 40 trucks making two trips a day are going to destroy our roads as well as endangering our lives while driving past certain sections of the eroding range which will collapse after numerous quarry trips. Main R oads have not given this road a rating - WHY I ask? Why haven’t Main roads come to assess this dangerous eroding road? Why isn’t Lew Brennan helping the Pomona, Cooran, Cootharaba, Boreen Point and Kin Kin communities? Lew Brennan was quick off the mark to help Kin Kin get through the flood disaster in April but why has he gone quiet over the Kin Kin Quarry’s new lease? The quarry will affect almost his entire electorate, the people who gave him his job! WHY? There are so many unanswered questions WHY?

OUR COMMUNITY Dear Editor,
T
he four little children in the 2010 Sunshine Coast Libraries calendar are from left to right: Loweke siblings - Roy Loweke, Sidney Loweke, Thelma Loweke who later married Jim Friedland, and Colin Loweke. The photo depicts them on the farm that belonged to their parents, Cope and Gladys Loweke until April 1936. The farm overlooked the Mary River at Lower Kenilworth (Gheerulla). Behind the children are the backwaters of the Mary River flood. The farm was on the east side of the Mary River. Later on, Cope and Gladys Loweke bought a farm they called ‘Cooee’; and moved there in April 1936. It was beside Walker Road, on the west side of the Mary River. The farm they called Cooee was located on the corner of Walker Road and the Moy Pocket to Brooloo Road. I am Margaret Pickering. I am a niece of Roy, Sid, Thelma and Colin Loweke. My sister Kathy Gardner (nee Pickering) submitted the photo to the Nambour Library for the Q150 collection. Our mother is Ivy Pickering (nee Loweke) who was born in June 1930, and doesn’t appear in the photo of the four Loweke children. She is their youngest sister. I am sending you a more recent photo of the Loweke siblings. It’s dated April 1995. It shows left to right: Thelma Friedland (nee Loweke), Colin Loweke, Roy Loweke, Sid Loweke and Ivy Pickering (nee Loweke). Ivy was the youngest of the children. The 1995 photo was taken at the Kenilworth Hall, on a special day to celebrate Colin’s 70th birthday. Colin is a Kenilworth local married to Rhonda (nee Pickering). They own the Willowside Jersey farm on the Obi Obi Creek. Colin has lived in the Mary Valley near Kenilworth, all his life thus far. Colin and Rhonda raised their six children on their Obi Obi farm. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary, in April 2008 at the Kenilworth Hall. Colin and Rhonda have been milking jersey cows together for all their married life. Colin has been milking cows since he was eight years old. He is a well respected member of the Kenilworth community.

Sid also lived his entire life in the Mary Valley near Kenilworth till he died from stroke on 22 Febuary 2001. Sid’s name lives on through ‘The Sid Loweke Memorial Unlucky-Dip-Skip’ which is part of the ‘Brownwater Classic’ held at Pickering Bridge, Moy Pocket each year. Sid was a local farmer with a sense of humour. His farm was on Pullen Creek, just north of Kenilworth. Thelma was a Mary Valley Kenilworth local for her entire life of 84 years, until she died of cancer on 29 May 2008. She had marrried a farmer, Jim Friedland. Thelma and Jim lived at Brooloo for a few years. Then they farmed at Cambroon from April 1951, before farming on the Obi Obi from 5th June 1965. They raised their two children, Ivan and Rita, in the Mary Valley too. Ivy married Walter Pickering and they raised their family at Kenilworth. Walter was a brother of Colin’s wife Rhonda. Walter worked as a mechanic at Kenilworth’s Sims Bros from 1947 till 1960. He then worked at Kenilworth Kraft Cheese factory from 1961 until 1967. Wal and Ivy then moved to Brisbane with their four children - Margaret, Kathy, Lyn and Evan - in December 1967. Wal and Ivy celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in April 2000, in Brisbane. Sadly, Walter died on 16 May 2006 from heart attack. Roy married Mary Greensill, and farmed jointly with his brother Colin as Loweke Bros on the Obi Obi from 1949 till 1962. Colin and Roy farmed separate farms on the Obi Obi from 1954. Roy and Mary raised their 4 children in the Kenilworth area. Roy continued to farm on the Obi Obi, and later opposite Sid’s farm on Pullen Creek until 1969. Then he and his family moved to Brisbane. Roy and Mary celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary just last week, in November 2009, at their Brisbane home. All five of the Loweke children had lived and worked on their parents’ farms at Gheerulla and Moy Pocket, before their respective marriages. Their parents, Cope and Gladys Loweke lived their entire lives in the Mary Valley near Kenilworth too. Gladys was a daughter of William Anderson Clarke and his wife Margaret Jane (nee Goodyear) who owned a farm at Belli Park, near the corner of Boyle Road and Newspaper Hill Road. William Anderson Clarke was a farmer and a butcher in the Belli area. Gladys’ mother Margaret Jane Clarke (nee Goodyear) was a school teacher at Coles Creek before she married W.A.Clarke. Cope Loweke was the eldest son of pioneer farmer Fred Loweke and his wife Elsie (nee Hansen). Fred and Elsie Loweke’s farm was off Boyle Road, Gheerulla. They had settled in this area in 1901, and remained there for the rest of their lives. Margaret Pickering

fter a wind storm blew over a power pole in the grounds on the Sunday prior to the Cent Auction there were concerns that it may have to be run by candlelight but, because of the efforts of local electrician Col Gross we were able to turn on the lights to greet all who arrived to commence their bidding and enjoy the sausage sizzle at the early in the evening of December 4. Our special thanks to Col and others involved in replacing the pole and returning the hall to full power. The Organising Committee would like to thank all the businesses and individuals who donated items as prizes. The function would not be the success it is without your valued support. The four major prizes were highly sought after and the 10 minor major prizes created a lot of spirited bidding, separate from the general prizes that kept the hall humming all evening. A ham and chicken wheel proved very popular with patrons who also enjoyed the supper break during the evening. Gheerulla Hall can now continue serving this community for its 103rd year. The hall is for the community and local involvement is essential to enable it to continue serving this district. F
or most people Christmas is a family event. Some people are lucky to have their families close by but others are not so fortunate. Our local Upper Mary Valley Care organisation works hard and tirelessly all year round to help and support people of different ages and lifestyles. This year again they put on a beautiful Christmas party and had a big crowd turning up for the celebrations. Local gourmet chef Justine was the source of the delicious and tasty foods presented and entertainment was provided throughout the day. And what is Christmas without a humorous story to share? This story didn’t happen here but it might as well have. This letter was sent to the Lions Bay School Principal’s office after the school had sponsored a luncheon for seniors. An elderly woman received a new radio at the lunch as a door prize and was writing to say thank you. Dear Lions Bay School, God bless you for the beautiful radio I won at your recent Senior Citizens luncheon. I am 84 years old and live at the home for the aged. All of my family has passed away. I am all alone and I want to thank you for the kindness shown to a forgotten old lady. My room mate is 95 and has always had her own radio; but before I received one, she would never let me listen to hers, even when she was napping. The other day her radio fell off the nightstand and broke into a lot of pieces. It was awful and she was in tears. She asked if she could listen to mine, and I told her to “f**k off!” Thank you for that opportunity. Sincerely, Edna

hristmas toys welcomed I would like to thank all the generous people who dropped off donated sporting goods for children in care at my office before Christmas. The Gift Drive for Queensland Kids was organised to provide children in care and foster children with fun active toys for Christmas. Two huge boxes of assorted sporting goods were collected at my Nambour office and dropped off at the district Child Safety office, where staff were overwhelmed with the donations. Gifts were sorted into age-appropriate groups and wrapped ready to be presented to children for Christmas.
The Murray family were early settlers of the Belli Park area who ran a local hotel, built in 1868 near the bridge. The hotel serviced Cobb and Co Coaches en route to the goldfields in Gympie. It was very timely that the ceremony happened exactly 150 years since Queensland was proclaimed a state – on December 11. We also enjoyed a celebratory Q150 cake, and while we reflected on the changes in our area in the past 150 years we also mused about what may happen in the district in the next 150 years. Alternate dam site concerns Late last year I contacted the Minister for Water Resources in relation to concerns raised by a number of residents regarding possible alternate dam sites in the Kenilworth area (with the scrapping of the Traveston Crossing Dam project). Minister Stephen Robertson has advised me that no decision has been made yet to remove the Kenilworth Dam site from the regulations, and he is still investigating this matter. If the Government fails to make a firm commitment to remove this alternate dam site from its regulations by the time Parliament resumes in February, I will continue to pursue the matter in Parliament. Murrays bridge named for early settlers Community representatives from Belli, Kenilworth and Eumundi joined locals, Cr Paul Tatton and myself to celebrate the opening and naming of the new Belli Creek bridge. Murrays Flat Crossing, formerly Belli Creek Crossing No 2, was the name chosen from submissions made to a community panel established by the Main Roads Department. Many submissions were received which referred to the history of the Murray family and the Murray Hotel.

OUR COMMUNITY Mixing it with Mary Valley artists
A
rt lovers will be able to enjoy some of the best works from two Mary Valley artists when they hold a joint exhibition at the Gympie Regional Gallery this month. “Mixing it” brings the pastel works of Narelle Webber to the gallery in the company of abstract artist Jean McAuley who prefers to work with acrylics.
The women are very excited about the collaboration, which kicked off with a private viewing at Narelle’s Lagoon Pocket home on January 10. It will be officially opened in Gallery 3 at the Gympie Regional Gallery in Nash Street on January 30, from 1pm, with Senator Ian Macdonald as guest speaker. Jean was born in 1944 and says that as a student she was always top of the class in art. She did not have the chance to study art formally until living in Brisbane in 1976 where she attended the Queensland College of Art at Seven Hills for one night a week for most of that year. Life went on its course, and at 45, she was widowed. She was living at Anakie in the Central Highlands and went back to work putting painting “on hold” again. In 2003, she sold her house at Anakie and moved to the Gympie area, joining the Imbil Village Artists and discovering her love of acrylics. She has since also joined the Gympie Friends of the Gallery and spends most Tuesday mornings with fellow artists for lessons and a get-together. “I think I have a natural flair for abstract painting and enjoy it immensely,” she said. That passion has paid off, with the artist winning the Abstract Award at the Mary Valley Art Festival in 2006 and again in 2007. By contrast, Narelle Webber uses the abundant natural countryside at Lagoon Pocket as her inspiration, preferring pastels to render these images to paper.She delights in painting flowers, the landscape, and what she claims is her first love - animals large and small. This has led to commissions for animal portraits from local farmers and has added an exciting and stimulating depth to her work. Narelle came to the Lagoon Pocket area when she and husband Geoff made the move to retire from Brisbane. Their new home on three acres includes a dedicated studio which takes advantage of 270-degree views and prevailing breezes. Narelle also paints weekly with the Imbil Village Artists and is an active member of the Gympie Friends of the Gallery. Seven years ago, she began the Painters at Mudgee plein air painting week in country New South Wales. The popular artist event is still going, and while initially for pastel artists, it is now open to artists painting in all mediums. “Mixing it” can be viewed in Gallery 3 at the Gympie Regional Gallery from January 27 until February 20.
