Free Breast Cancer Screening in Kenilworth

omen in the Kenilworth area are being urged to take advantage of free breast cancer screening at Queensland Health’s mobile service which will be located behind the Hall at the Kenilworth Showgrounds on 25 and 26 February 2014. Breast Cancer is still one of the most common cancers experienced by Australian women with about one in eight Queensland women diagnosed with breast cancer before the age of 85. BreastScreen Queensland Health Promotion Officer Kelly Hart said regular two yearly breast cancer screening is still the best way to find breast cancer early – well before a women or her doctor can feel anything. “It is important to remember that nine out of ten women diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history of the disease” said Ms Hart, “and it is vital that all women heed messages about the importance of having a regular breast screen.” As there is currently no means of preventing breast cancer, the focus in reducing deaths from this disease has been on finding breast cancer as early as possible. All women aged 40 years and over are eligible for a free breastscreen every two years at a BreastScreen Queensland Service. Women aged 50-74 years are particularly encouraged to attend. “There is no need for women to put off having a breastscreen any longer. It’s quick, simple, convenient, free and a doctor’s referral is not required,” said Ms Hart. Phone 13 20 50 for an appointment or for more info. Early detection could save your life.

KENILWORTH 70 Years Ago in Kenilworth

Mr Muller was a keen cricketer and was elected Assistant Secretary of the Kenilworth Cricket Association in 1935. In October, 1935 Mr Muller was elected to the position of one of the two vice-presidents of the Maroochy Zone Cricket Council. Lenore Meldrum President of Kenilworth and District Historical Assn Inc.

T

he Nambour Chronicle, along with The Gympie Times was the most important form of media conveying news to the district in 1944. On page one of the Nambour Chronicle on January 14 the results of the previous year’s Scholarship Examination were announced in which T.R. Sims was the only boy listed and J.M. Adams and B.D. Welch the two girls from Kenilworth district. Historic Note:- The state scholarship examination was administered to every student in the state reaching year 8 level in primary school and was a thorough assessment of student academic performance generally featuring a few different papers including Arithmetic, English, Geography and History. Students had to possess more than average ability to answer examination questions intelligently and had to have been taught well. This examination was very important to each student as it determined a student’s career chances. If they passed, they could attend a state secondary or catholic school or school administered by Christian Brothers. Failure meant that the student finished his/her schooling and looked for work. The State Scholarship Examination was abandoned in 1963. Children could finish primary school at the age of 14 in 1944. The Community Halls were the centres for entertainment in the district. All picture theatre businesses were required to register with local Council. The Chronicle of Friday January 28, 1944 (page 6) listed in the minutes of the Maroochy Shire Council Meeting:- applications for licenses were received from Mrs. M. Evans, Jazzland, Maroochydore; H. C. Muller, picture theatre, Kenilworth; Wm. Whalley Pty. Ltd. (two petrol pumps, Nambour).- Applications approved. In the Maroochy Shire Council Meeting Report (The Nambour Chronicle 25.2.1944 p6.). Letter From Lower Kenilworth Hall Committee asking for certificate as to seating capacity of Hall. Estimated to seat 216 persons; certificate granted. Who was Mr. H.C. Muller - Harry Muller? Mr Muller worked full time for Arthur Tanner in his General Store before taking over the Grocery section of the business in the early 1940’s. Prior to that time he played in the Kenilworth Jazz Band which was formed in 1929, with Mr Tanner, Ern Sims, Eric Dobson, Tom Milady and Bill Browne. In 1945 Mr Muller purchased the Roxy Theatre business from Mr Frank Rogers.

HERE WE GO AGAIN

here is a proposed NBN tower at Kenilworth Skyring Creek Rd, Carters Ridge on private land. This tower will be about 60 metres from its nearest neighbour, which will become the neighbour’s ‘view’. The notice was put up on Australia Day giving nearby residents only three weeks to send in submissions. They should have been given notice months before as it has been on the boil for months. This is NBN by stealth. In my understanding, to add insult to injury the Aurecon public meeting will be held AFTER the submission date has closed! Late submissions are not read or accepted and must be in writing. The site report say there has been no public consultation yet. This is the report http://www.rfnsa. com.au/nsa/index.cgi Aurecon withdrew its tower next to residents in Kenilworth as it was too close to residents and would have severely impacted their views. Most of the Kenilworth residents were not notified in the proper manner either and discovered it by accident. Aurecon is working for Ericcson, employed by NBN co. Why do multinational companies believe they can impose towers in rural areas in view of close neighbours? Did they make sufficient effort to find a larger property where it could be hosted? The Qld government could also have it on their many uninhabited, unsold properties. Why do they divide communities by offering it to landholders prepared to take money at the expense of their close neighbours? Why do they have the ability to negatively impact our property values making these affected properties virtually unsaleable? Aurecon will tell you they are harmless and allowed next to schools, whereas Aurecon guidelines say that they should be kept away from schools and community sensitive locations! In NSW it is official policy that towers should not be within 500 metres of schools’ although smaller installations of low impact may be allowed. NBN towers are medium impact and must be approved by Council. Brooloo will be next in the firing line. Aurecon will try to tell you that the tower will be shielded by trees yet you cannot disguise a 30-35 metre tower. Imagine the outcry if they tried this on at Noosa Heads less than 100 metres from someone’s home? Make your submission before Wednesday 19 of this month. Contact your local councillor if you are concerned. You don’t have to be personally impacted by the towers. Let’s put these towers in more appropriate locations. R. Sharp, Feb. 3, 2014

KENILWORTH CRICKET CLUB 7 A-SIDE AND PINK STUMPS DAY

T

his was one of the many questions put to permaculture teacher, Daniel McGough, at Belli’s inaugural Organic Swap-meet Cafe and Healing day during his playshop on how to build a herb spiral. The answer? The herb spiral creates a range of micro-climates to suit a variety of herbs. The driest and sunniest conditions are the top spirals, and as it reaches the bottom it becomes more moist until it reaches a small pond. Looking down from the top, the clockwise spiral provides shade to the Eastern side to suit the moist, shade loving herbs such as Pennyroyal. The talk was part of Bellbunya’s inaugural local produce Organic Swap-Meet, Cafe and Healing Day where around 40-50 people braved the heat to enjoy great food and good company. Live acoustic music from Jude Lane set an ambient scene, while tables were overflowing with fresh produce that people brought in to sell for a little pocket money, or swap with other growers. Permaculture Seed savers brought along their box of heirloom seeds to share, and the neighbouring Organic Fejoa farm brought a selection of organic jams and chutneys. A Bellbunya community initiative to support local food networks the day was a great success, to be repeated every month from 9-12:30am, next event 20 February. The day will feature a free talk by local community enthusiast Alison Smith on “The Magic of Findhorn”, the most famous intentional community in the world. Everyone is welcome, whether your interest is buying and supporting local produce, meeting other locals, having a delicious raw or gluten free cake or giving or receiving healings. MARY VALLEY PERMACULTURE NOOSA Presents YOU ARE THE KEY! WITH GARY HANDS

G

ary from Kookaburra Organics has been an organic farmer in the region for over twelve years. He understands the climate in south east Queensland and he regularly shares his knowledge at workshop events. Gary is a regular presenter at the Qld Garden Expo. Kookaburra Organics is a certified organic market garden with an online home delivery service servicing Brisbane CBD and suburbs, and the Sunshine coast every week. Authentic and Clean – this is how real food should taste! Every family deserves food grown with integrity and with appropriate labelling certification to support its origin. We need to have confidence in the food chain from farmer to plate. Growing your own mulch by Kerry Nagle Over the last 12 years Kerry has spent hundreds of dollars on buying and transporting bales of mulch hay for the garden, only to have it disappear into the soil over the course of a season. Spurred on by two other talks at PN meetings, ie one by Elisabeth Fekonia and another by Frances Michaels, Kerry decided to aim to produce all the mulch for her gardens on site. When a bale of hay sat in the carport for over six months, she realised she was there. Kerry will tell you what she grows and how she uses it to mulch and feed her gardens.

Temporary water supply interruption: Kenilworth - Thursday 27 February

Russian/Elephant Garlic by Mel Hobbins Mel Hobbins came to Australia in late 2004, from the UK, and has been on their 30 acre Traveston property for nine years. Quite a change from the small house blocks he had in the UK, although Mel had several allotment gardens, most without a water supply. Although primarily a horse property he has made an impact on the landscape with an extensive orchard, traditional raised veggie beds, a 900 tree hardwood plantation, rain forest and revegetation plantings and since 2010 has been experimenting with and expanding plantings of tropical veggies and support species. This meeting will be held on Thursday 20 February 2014 from 7pm at Cooroy Memorial Hall on Maple ST. Permaculture Noosa meetings are FREE and open to the public. Beginning at 7pm with a marketplace (where members share their surplus home grown produce by giving, exchanging or selling it), the guest speakers start at 7.30pm and supper (gold coin donation) will be served at 9pm.

To improve the performance of the network and to cater for current needs and future growth in Kenilworth, Unitywater is refurbishing the existing reservoirs and installing a water booster pump station at the reservoir site in Alexandra St. The refurbishment of the existing reservoirs will include roof replacements and refurbishment of the internal walls.

What we are doing

• To implement these new works we will need to temporarily interrupt the town’s water supply on the night of Thursday 27 February 2014. • To minimise inconvenience to the community, we have scheduled this work to occur overnight on Thursday 27 February 2014 between the hours of 12:00am and 5:00am, weather permitting. • Please ensure you have enough water stored to provide for household needs; and all taps are turned off and appliances which use water are not operating. • You may experience discoloured water for a short period following this work. If this occurs turn on the tap nearest to the ground level (usually an outside tap) and let it run for up to five minutes until water runs clear. If water remains discoloured contact Unitywater. If you have any concerns please contact our Customer Contact Centre on 1300 0 UNITY (1300 086 489) for the cost of a local call from a landline. www.unitywater.com

ELECTRICAL WORK: TAKE IT SERIOUSLY

I

am a local electrician with over 30 years experience and several times recently I have been called out in the Mary Valley to fix electrical problems where owners have tried to do their own electrical work. I am writing this letter to let your readers know how important it is to get a qualified electrician to do any electrical work. You may think it will be cheaper to perform the work yourself, but most times it costs you even more when a qualified electrician has to fix the problems you have created. Many people think they can just fix an electrical appliance or do their own electrical wiring work, but even though you cannot see electricity it is a very powerful force which must be treated with respect. If not, it can kill or injure you or another loved one. Name Supplied

OUR COMMUNITY n my childhood, I was fortunate to have the most sensational group of cousins. We would regularly catch up, experience very powerful connections with fun had by all. At an event in 2013, several first cousins were present. I commented to one of my first cousins how sad it was that we had all seemingly lost a lot of those wonderful times together. You know, these days only either gathering at a funeral or wedding. I then informed her I was really worried that if we did not get the second cousins together, they may very well end up bringing one of their cousins home from a night club in a couple of years. From that single conversation “organising” wheels spun in motion and we vowed and declared a gathering would take place. We accordingly booked the Obi Obi Hall from 11 – 2pm on Australia Day. Invitation stated: bring own food, drinks, family nostalgia and of course cousins ALL cordially invited. The day has been and gone and I can happily report it was a raging success. There were many highlights to note: the Cutmore family have been residents in the Obi Obi Valley for 100 years, photo opportunities galore – one in particular was the eldest and youngest of the Cutmore descendants cutting our 100 year celebratory cake, family memorabilia, past stories, a poem dedicated to my Dad, John Cutmore from one of the eldest nephews, and ultimately the whole experience of all getting back together. One of my younger second cousins blurted,

“Wow! I can’t believe I am related to all these people!” The flow on from this one event has been encouraging. E-mails flying back and forth, facebook communication and best of all the invitations of getting together much more regularly just like old days. Since our event, I have communicated to the kids that the world is in safe hands when you are in and around great cousins. It may have been just one small family event, but I have faith in my heart we have begun re-connection. That’s a lovely space to float in. MARY VALLEY uxury cabins, gourmet chefs and stunning landscapes ... if you thought of the Noosa hinterland you would be right, but it’s actually a bit closer than that in Mary Valley Country. Mary Valley businesses are pitching themselves at the celebration market to encourage people with a reason to party, whether it be a birthday, wedding or other private function, to visit the valley instead of heading further afield. Business operators targeting this market are urged to attend a meeting on February 27 to further develop a collaborative marketing approach for the Mary Valley. The quality and diversity of accommodation, venues and catering was showcased at a speed marketing event at newly opened B&B Connacht Gleann at Brooloo this month. Twenty businesses gave a snapshot of their product in one-minute slideshow presentations. From the award-winning working property Yabbaloumba Retreat with luxuriously appointed cottages on the edge of the Conondale National Park, to the authentic bush camping experience of Brooloo Park, there was something for everyone. The event was organised by Malcolm Oakley, who with Christine Buckley operates Amamoor Lodge B&B. Malcolm has been working with the Mary Valley Country marketing committee to develop the “Celebrate with Mary” theme. “It’s an easy concept,” Malcolm said. “We want businesses to collaborate and bring more people into the Mary Valley. We need businesses to get to know each other’s products so that there is a referral system here where we all help each other.” Andrew Saunders from Destination Gympie was enthusiastic for the initiative. “This is exactly what the tourism industry needs - businesses are bundling experiences and going out into the market place.” Michael and Kate O’Dwyer have just opened Connacht Gleann as a function centre and bed and breakfast, and saw that hosting the networking event was a great opportunity to show off their property.

Mary Valley Voice

“We think the Mary Valley is the best place to raise our children. We live here and we want to share it with others,” Michael said, referring to the expansive B&B which is a faithful renovation of two Queenslander homes connected by a function room and verandahs. Cabins, studios, traditional B&B accommodation, camping, golf, catering, wedding planning, farmstays, 60s entertainment, bus transport and festivals were all a part of the Mary Valley’s appeal. The next step for “Celebrate with Mary” is a meeting on February 27, venue to be advised. Inquiries to celebrate@themaryvalley.com.au or to Malcom Oakley on 5484 3500.

Laughing Out Loud! RIDDLE There was an accident – a big truck got stuck under a bridge in the middle of a road. It was trying to pass through the bridge, but a few inches got it complete stuck. Firemen and policemen came to the scene of the accident. They brought heavy equipment and tried pulling the truck out. No success. A little boy stepped in and get it out with a pin. How did he do it? he got the air out of the tyres
