It is officially Autumn in New York. I don't think there is a more romantic time in this city. The city has come alive since vaccines started being distributed at the end of winter and early Spring. Even NYFW and The Met Gala returned this September. I found new and old ways to celebrate this beautiful city even during the darkest days of the pandemic, but I must admit I am still breathing a huge sigh of relief following 2020 that seemed endless and too mysterious even for me. So here we are world! New York has been back for some time, right? It has been 580 days since New York city shutdown. Now, children play in the park again wild and free and native New Yorkers are celebrating with late nights of celebrating; in all the ways we see on social media and the New York Times. One of the small ways I greeted New York anew following my Pfizer shots was on a Citi Bike. I have zipped and zoomed nearly everywhere since early May. I really do not know why I waited this long to fly across town this easily and for such an economical price. I have even started to time my trips to the SoHo House and other favorite destinations like Battery Park and Central Park. It doesn't hurt this newfound mode of transportation gets me outside after being a professional couch surfer last year. Citi Bike was also a way for me to control my exposure to the public by avoiding trains till I was ready. And by the end of Summer,

I was ready to partake with my fellow New Yorkers again. This bold move was marked by the 2021 US Open in Flushing Meadows which also returned to the public. I am a huge fan of tennis, and really love the tradition of making it to Arthur Ashe Stadium every year. Madison Square Park's leaves are changing and cooler days have arrived here in New York City. For our October issue, we teamed up with photographers and stylists from New York to Los Angeles and even Spain for issue 20! This milestone coincides with reaching over 20 Million Man of Metropolis fans across all our platforms since we launched in 2015. I could not be prouder of this moment and I am extremely grateful to all creative partners for helping us mark this occasion. The driving force behind Man of Metropolis has always been to share my passion for story telling through fashion while elevating our work and being open to the evolving trends in art and fashion. Manny Jacinto appears in the all-new Hulu series; Nine Perfect Strangers opposite Nicole Kidman. The show takes place at a health and wellness escape and Jacinto plays Yao who work at Tranquillum House. The Filipino-Canadian actor is known for his break-out role as Jason Mendoza in The Good Place and can be seen in the much anticipated Top Gun: Maverick in May 27, 2022. We caught up with Manny following our shoot with him in Los Angeles, California. Here is our conversation.

during the pandemic. We were actually very lucky. We filmed in a small beach town off the coast of Australia and covid cases were minimal to none over there during that time. It was the most ideal situation.

First off, congratulations on the new series on Hulu Nine Perfect Strangers. You play Yao opposite a star studded cast including Nicole Kidman, Michael Shannon, and Melissa McCarthy. How did this project come up for you and was the audition process or the filming of the series happening during the pandemic? If so, how was that experience for you?

MJ: Yao is definitely a more calming presence within the Tranquillum retreat. He has his own personal conflicts but has to mask them in front of the guests to appear grounded and controlled. We had a 14 day quarantine in Australia before we started shooting. Having that time to work and reflect on the character was a huge advantage. Also the town where we filmed, Byron Bay, has a very holistic and calming energy. It was the perfect place to get into Yao's headspace.

MJ: Oh thanks so much. It came through just like any other audition. I was asked to put a tape for the character of Yao with the sides that were emailed to me. The filming process was

Without giving away too much, can you tell us about your character Yao. He has a very meditative presence in the series. What was preparing for this role like?

Nine Perfect Strangers has an edge to it and makes the viewer constantly uncomfortable. What surprised you as an actor about this project? MJ: This cast included a lot of veteran actors and I was surprised at how open and playful they all were. I guess there's a reason they've all been able to do this for so long. They're not only great actors, but incredibly down to earth people. We would be remiss to not ask, but do you have any funny stories from the set you can share. Melissa McCarthy for example must have found ways to lighten the mood on such a suspenseful set? MJ: Melissa has such a sense of ease around her. She made everyone around her feel comfortable and included by making them laugh or smile; I feel like that's her superpower. Did you learn anything from Nicole Kidman, or any of the other cast mates about the craft of acting that was like an "aha" moment for you in your career? MJ: If anything I was mainly inspired by seeing the work Nicole and the rest of the cast were putting in. Witnessing their level of commitment was a lesson itself. One of the things we have all been hearing about over the last few years is about representation. As a Filipino-Canadian actor who is building a career in the business, what is the most important thing you want fans and peers to know right now? MJ: If you have a story you need to tell, write, direct, or produce, do it! Obviously, it's easier said than done, but you can find people out there, including me, to support you. There aren't a lot of Filipino stories out there and it's unfortunate how underrepresented we are on screen. If something is calling you to create, do it. Growing up, did you have any heroes in film or tv who you looked up to and how has those references stayed with you as a professional actor?

and I'm excited for people to see it. The fans of the original have been waiting a very long time. Since we are a fashion focused magazine we have to fit in a question about style. Do you have a favorite brand you shop at regularly and how would you describe your personal style? MJ: I really loved the pieces that we did for this shoot, the pieces from Prada, Zegna, and Celine, if I was allowed to I would have kept it all. In regards to my personal style, I tend to choose pieces that are classic or that I think are timeless. There's something about having a piece of clothing that I know I'll still use 10 or 20 years down the road. When you are not hitting a red carpet, or at a casting, what is your go-to outfit at home or with friends when you are off-duty? MJ: I'm a simple jeans and t- shirt kind of guy. If I could only wear one thing for the rest of my life, it would be jeans and a white tee. Since we have all been home a lot more than usual have you developed any new hobbies or guilty pleasures, cooking, a new sport or workout, maybe completing an entire show like The Sopranos? MJ: The one new guilty pleasure I developed over the pandemic was playing Mario Kart on Nintendo Switch. It became therapeutic, and I have a pretty obsessive personality, so once I get into something, I really go in. I actually formed a group of friends, our own Mario Kart Crew haha, it sounds kind of dorky but I'm so glad I found that and them during such a chaotic time. Words to live by? MJ: Don't worry about the past, don't be anxious about the future, just be here and relish the present.

MJ: Growing up I loved a movie called "Better Luck Tomorrow". It was one of the first films Justin Lin directed. It was the first film I saw that was led by people who all looked like me. The characters were going through similar issues I was facing at the time. It was the first time I felt represented. Speaking of heroes, what is it like to work with Tom Cruise. He is one of the most successful actors in Hollywood, and Top Gun: Maverick is such a highly anticpated film? MJ: I can't say much but getting to work on a huge production like that was extraordinary. It was an intense process and

Actor Tom Varey stars as Jack Morris in the new gripping thriller, Ridley Road. Ridley Road is written and adapted for television by award-winning writer Sarah Solemani and takes place in the 1960’s in London. The drama covers some relevant and alarming political themes including: anti-Semitism, fascism and neo-Nazism. We caught up with Tom after his shoot with Joseph Sinclair ahead of the BBC release of Ridley Road for an exclusive with Man of Metropolis. Congrats on Ridley Road. It is a major accomplishment. I was sucked in and all 4 episodes were really gripping stuff. You obviously must be very proud of this project. Before we dig into your character Jack Morris, can you tell us how you got involved in the series? TV: Thank you! I’m incredibly proud of it, the experience of being on this set and getting to tell this story is something I’ll always cherish. I got involved the usual route really, my agent sent over the scripts which I flew through, then I had a meeting with Sam Jones and went on tape. I’d worked with Sarah

Solemani previously on a show called ‘No Offence’ and thought she was so cool, the whole team seemed really exciting and I really wanted to get the part. When I got the phone call from my agent I was smiling a lot, definitely did a little happy boogie. Who is Jack Morris and what can our readers expect from you in this role? TV: He’s a bit of an enigma, Jack. He is a Jewish, Mancunian lad who is not afraid to fight for what he believes in. He is a bit of a lone wolf, secrecy suits him and I think he finds some form of escape from conventional domestic life by being able to go undercover for the 62 group. He was a promising boxer and there is certainly a bit of scrapping in this show! when Jack meets Vivien, it opens a feeling in him that is he didn’t know was there, similar to a lot of men in his era, he struggles to articulate his emotions and so having a cause and action to dedicate himself to works for him. There’s a ‘Jack with Vivien’ and a ‘Jack with everyone else’, finding those differences was really interesting for me.

The series is set in 1962 and really digs into anti-Semitism, fascism and neo-Nazism. These are very heavy topics. Did you have mini-history lessons on set, or did you have to do your own research to prepare for the role? TV: I have to admit I had no idea this was happening in the 60s, that era I always imagine peace and love and the rolling stones, so it was really eye opening to read these scripts and learn about this topic. lots of solo research firstly, the lockdown meant that there was lots of time to really prepare, I asked Sarah if she could send me any material to get involved in, and she sent over a big list of books like ‘we fight fascists’ by Daniel Sonabend and ‘Night’ by Elie Wiesel, and also some things to watch to get a sense of the world and style of the show. Then in the weeks prior to filming we had rehearsals where we discussed the topics in the show and why it feels so relevant today, I remember spending rehearsals listening to the other cast talk so brilliantly about everything, Tracy Ann Oberman was absolutely brilliant, we had a 62 group rehearsal and I came away from that after listening to her thinking ‘I can’t wait to do this’. Jack is a bit of a bruiser, what is it like preparing for those scenes? TV: haha you can never be sure there’s not gonna be a couple of teeth knocked out! no only joking, I loved doing all the physical stuff, those days were always so adrenaline fueled! we had a brilliant stunt team who came in to help on those days, usually we would take 1 or 2 days before the shooting day to choreograph it all and then run and run and run it so that it was inch perfect and safe. I find it all really interesting talking about how the different characters would have different brawling styles and choices of weaponry, Jack definitely has a signature move in the show so that’s one to look out for! What was it like getting dressed for a different era? TV: The costume designers on Ridley were top class! as we are in the early 60s a lot of my costumes had more of a 50s feel to them, which I loved. I’ve always admired the style of the guys in those times, Steve McQueen to Paul Newman, and so it felt exciting to be calling back to that. Jack’s style is kind of simple but stylish, with rolled sleeves and boots. I had a Harrington style jacket that was custom made to fit that was really cool. Aside from the wardrobe, the script, and character development, what is another element of Ridley Road you are particularly proud of? TV: Having the opportunity to tell what feels like an incredibly relevant, important story, and getting to work with people I have looked up to for a long time. also without wanting to go down the cheesy road too much, made some real friends for life, I feel like filming the show during the pandemic made us quite a

tight unit, we even did our own zoom quiz one time that Hannah Onslow, who plays Elise, put the questions together for! You and Aggi O’Casey who plays Vivien Epstein had great chemistry. Did you both audition together, and did you feel immediate chemistry? TV: We didn’t audition together no, but once we were both cast Lisa Mulcahy, the director, introduced us to each other on zoom and we had a big chat about the characters and the story and life in general. we wanted to talk a lot about their story before we meet them in the show to set up a definite backstory and understanding of their dynamic as a pair, we get along so well and Aggi is so brilliant that it felt really natural, I can’t wait for people to see what she has done with this role! Can you share a standout moment with Aggi on set? TV: Without giving too much away, I’d say the scenes we did on the abandoned train in episode one felt like a really significant day in the shoot. those scenes had stood out to me from the start as ones that would need to be extra prepared for as they were really meaty. the location on the day was so cool and the scene was shot in a handheld roaming style so it felt like as actors we had reign to move about as we wished and really go for it, and the camera would follow us, it was a really good day. What is your earliest memory of acting? TV: As a kid I remember always pulling ‘acting’ faces to myself in the mirror, which, on reflection sounds kind of odd. but I was quite shy to be honest, so it was a surprise to me that when my friend asked me to come with him to our local drama club one Friday, that I loved it so much. I couldn’t stop corpsing though, that was a problem. and early on I’d just be doing loads of slapstick stuff to make people laugh, then the more I got used to it I found a real excitement in being able to dress up and get inside a character’s skin. Is there such a thing as a perfect Saturday, and if so what is that for you? TV: Oooh a perfect Saturday, a lie in, always! go for a proper nice coffee, walk along the southbank. if I was in Manchester would probably involve going to Old Trafford to watch United. If not I love going places spontaneously, I went to a restaurant called ‘Dans le Noir’ a while back, it was a completely dark restaurant, you couldn’t see your hand in front of your face, let alone what you were eating, I really enjoyed it, and it introduced me for the first time to Crème brûlée, I haven’t looked back since. Words to live by? TV: The same water that hardens the egg, softens the potato.
