OH HELLO Hardly the department store window dream of Yuletide perfection, but as it turns out, that doesn’t hold a candle to knick knacks carefully hung with love.
G
rowing up, our family Christmas tree proudly held every hodgepodge knick knack imaginable. We didn’t have a lot, and I imagine a department store tree of epic proportions just wasn’t in the cards. Instead, handmade ornaments of every size, shape, and color graced limb after limb without rhyme or reason. A salt dough hand print here, a popsicle stick picture frame there - our name and the year always scribbled on the back to denote who made each ornament. The earliest Christmases I can recall are of the seven of us crowded around a brightly lit tree in a home we had outgrown from day one, and I just remember feeling so much love. Still as an adult, I vowed to banish the kitschy decor in favor of a classic department storestyle tree. Somewhat ironically then, I found our first Christmas tree at a garage sale. But it was in decent shape and only five bucks. And pre-lit too, score! My husband and I, newlyweds, had just bought our first home together, and though Christmas was months away, I couldn’t pass it up. When the day after Thanksgiving finally arrived, I pulled that baby out before the sun came up and trimmed our second-hand tree to perfection. I chose a metallic and red
color scheme, and when I was finished, my grandmother remarked that it looked like a tree you would see in a model home. I continued decorating our five-dollar find that way every year until this one. As you can imagine, it finally gave up on us. The light bulbs had worked too hard for too many years, so we retired her to the storage closet, and put up a brand new tree, this time with multi-colored lights. Not the same big bulbs we had growing up, but close. Hudson discovered a bag of prop ornaments - not at all in my metallic and red color scheme, and excitedly asked if he could put them on the tree. I remembered how excited I was to help as a girl, and suddenly I didn’t care anymore about the perfect tree. Instead, I let Hudson take the reigns, creating the kind of hodgepodge grandeur only a two-year-old can. Some branches deemed particularly worthy sport not one ornament, but five, ranging from pink to orange to blue - whatever he could find. The only candy canes left are at the top of the tree, out of reach of his small arms. Hardly the department store window dream of Yuletide perfection, but as it turns out, that doesn’t hold a candle to knick knacks carefully hung with love.

HOLIDAY MANTEL PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARA NEVELS
A fireplace often marks the focal point of a living room, so learning to style a mantel creates a polished and stylish living space. We have three rules for mantel styling, and we shot not one, but two holiday fireplaces to get your wheels turning! Proportion: The first thing to keep in mind is proportion. If you are going for a large focal piece above the fireplace, make sure it’s at least two thirds the width of the mantel. If it’s too small, it can end up looking dinky and insignificant. Layer: The second key is to layer. When picking out decor items, look for varying textures and shapes, but stick with a consistent color scheme to maintain cohesion. We kept a red and green color scheme for our traditional mantel, but blended rustic wood, cable knit fabric, and shiny metallic textures. The shapes varied as well, layering geometric (a rectangle and circle) with organic (a tree and branch bowl). Heights: Finally, each decor item should rise to a different height. Mixing high and low pieces keeps the eye engaged for a look that is truly tied together.

TRIM THE TREE -under $20PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH HUBBELL
It’s easy to go crazy decking the halls, but as budgets tighten and Christmas lists grow longer, a little DIY tree trimming can save you big bucks. Plus we love the look of a handmade holiday. And don’t worry, these decorations won’t take all day. As a general rule, we stuck with inexpensive, easy, and quick projects you can whip out in no time. Garland: A paper chain garland is a nostalgic throw back and brings in a lot of color right off the bat. Plus our total cost was just a buck for four sheets of 12x12-inch blue cardstock. Candy Canes: A package of red and white pipe cleaners twist together to make bright candy canes. The best part? You can enlist the little ones to help! Felt Ornaments: Trace cookie cutters onto stiff felt and cut out. Then punch a hole and string up! We also found a pack of blue felt snowflakes for $3 at a local craft store. Merry Banner: Burlap and paint is all you need to assemble your own festive banner, but for just $5, we picked this one up at Target. Worth the time saved, we say!

Valentine Heart Cookies PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARA BISHOP
Everyone knows the quickest way to the heart is through the stomach. These sweet treats were made with a World Market alphabet cookie cutter set, and can be customized to say whatever your heart desires! Note: We tested both this recipe and store-bought cookie dough, but found the store-bought dough spread too much in the oven, so make it from scratch! INGREDIENTS 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 1/2 cup unsalted butter 1 cup granulated sugar 1/4 cup packed golden brown sugar 1 egg, beaten 1 teaspoon vanilla extract powdered sugar (for rolling out dough)
PREPARE Makes 18-24 heart cookies Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Sift together flour, baking powder, and salt and set aside. In a separate bowl, cream together butter and both sugars. Add egg and vanilla and mix well. To this, add flour mixture one third at a time until fully incorporated. Add a few drops of desired food coloring and mix well. Chill the dough in plastic wrap for at least two hours or overnight. Roll the dough onto a surface sprinkled with powdered sugar. Cut out hearts and place on a parchment lined cookie sheet. Pop cookie sheet in freezer for ten minutes before placing in oven. Bake for 10 minutes.

A modern alternative to a traditional evergreen piece, this colorful DIY paper garland cost next to nothing. We utilized free paint color swatch cards from a nearby home improvement store, although similar card-stock would be an inexpensive option, as well!

Materials colorful paper 1-inch hole punch sewing machine No. 1 Punch out paper holes and decide on the pattern you’d like. Place the circles in order before heading to the sewing machine. No. 2 Sew the circles together, leaving extra thread at either end for hanging or attaching to a thicker piece of twine. No. 3 Hang anywhere you wish! We love above a mantle or even on a Christmas tree!

For Kay Allison, biscuit making is a serious business. She remembers baking with her mother growing up on an Arizona dairy farm. Homemade Biscuits INGREDIENTS 3 cups flour, plus more for dusting 1/4 teaspoon baking soda 1 tablespoon baking powder 1 teaspoon salt 1/4 cup shortening 1/4 cup cold butter 3/4 cup buttermilk 1/2 cup milk
PREPARE Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Pour flour, baking soda, powder, and salt into a large bowl. Add shortening and butter. Cut with pastry cutter until well mixed. Pour in buttermilk and milk. Use wooden spoon to mix until blended. Pour onto floured surface and bring dough together with hands, without overmixing. Pat out dough to about 3/4 inch thick. Fold in half. Add mix-ins if desired. Repeat two times. Using biscuit cutter, cut out your biscuits. Bring the extra dough together again and fold once, pat out and cut. Place on baking sheet and bake for about 10 minutes or until done.

Growing up, nothing made you feel better than a handwritten note from Mom in your lunch box. Give your little ones a mid-day perk-up with these easy lunch ideas. Oh Christmas Tree A sugar snap pea tree and red and white striped candy canes make this lunch feel festive. Cupid’s Arrow Fashion an arrow out of scrap paper and a skewer stick. Load up with grapes or tomatoes and pair with a heart-shaped P.B.J. for a Valentine’s Day treat. Heart You Lunch Almost any fruit or veggie can be cut into a heart with minimal effort. A heart-shaped treat cup filled with popcorn seals the deal!

This semi-homemade chili takes no time to whip up and is packed with protein and flavor. Use leftover chicken or pick up a rotisserie chicken to cut cooking time in half. We used our favorite cherry red dutch oven, which you can find on page 75 in our gift guide!

Green Chicken Chili INGREDIENTS 1 medium yellow onion, diced 2 cans (28 ounces each) Las Palmas brand green chili enchilada sauce 2 cans (15 ounces each) black beans, drained 1 bag (32 ounces) frozen corn 2 boneless chicken breasts, cooked and shredded lime cilantro shredded cheese sour cream
PREPARE In a heavy pot or dutch oven, add 2 tablespoons olive oil and diced onion. Cook until onion is translucent, 3-5 minutes or so. Add sauce, beans, corn, and shredded chicken. Simmer for 25 minutes. Garnish with cilantro, sour cream, and cheese, and serve with a lime wedge.

Inspired by a series of Swedish pottery style dishes in chocolate brown, light blue, light green, and lemon grass yellow, entertaining expert Brendan McCaskey creates a midcentury modern Christmas table for six. Centerpiece A string of cardboard cones Brendan picked up at a craft store line the center of the table. He cut slits to allow for lit votives to rest inside. Nicholas Shekerjian made the matching concrete cone trees by pouring concrete mix into the cardboard cones until hardened. Plate Setting Beneath the Swedish dinnerware set lies a concrete charger Nicholas made by pouring concrete mix into an old lunch tray. The shape plays perfectly off the modern plates. Venue/Favors Set in the brightly lit home of For the People owner, Lew Gallo, guests sit down to Gina Miller’s individually wrapped geometric sugar cookie trees, ensuring no one gets antsy waiting for dessert.

With baking season upon us, there’s no better time to get your pantry in tip-top shape. Graphic designer and blogger, Ann-Marie Espinoza, created these printable pantry labels to help!

Using sponge brush, adhere label to canister and allow to dry. No 3. Again using sponge brush, brush a thin layer of mod-podge over the top of label and allow to dry, creating a water resistant barrier.

Looking to rehab a piece of furniture but not sure where to start? We’ve got you covered with this simple step-by-step tutorial. Some crafters swear by chalk paint, but we found ordinary latex paint did the job just fine!

Materials paste finishing wax tack cloth hand sander and or steel wool latex paint in finish of your choosing No. 1 Sand your furniture piece before painting. This will help paint to absorb easier. Rub down with a tack cloth to remove sanding remnants and paint the entire surface of your table (or furniture of your choosing) until you no longer see the wood grain beneath it. This piece started out very dark, so it took a couple coats. No. 2 Using steel wool or hand sander, buff the places that would naturally see the most wear-and-tear. The amount of distressing is up to you. Start small, you can always add more distressing! No. 3 Finally, seal with a paste finishing wax. Rub an even layer across the surface of the furniture, and you’re set! Note: some crafters recommend a coat of polyurethane, but we prefer the wax.

Materials foam core board moss roll mod podge craft glue foam brush razor knife No. 1 Trace the letter onto the foam core board. No. 2 Carefully trace line with a razor knife to cut out. No. 3 Using a sharpie, trace the letter on the back side of the moss roll. No. 4 Cut around the letter leaving a couple inches of overhang to wrap around the back side. No. 5 Glue moss to foam core letter using a foam brush. No. 6 Attach ribbon and hang.
