lon Musk laid down the gauntlet to his fellow billionaires as he launched his SpaceX Falcon into deep space. “We want a new space race,” Musk said. “Races are exciting.” In just over 15 years, Musk’s SpaceX has muscled its way into spaceflight, a realm long-dominated by space agencies like NASA. Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos had already beaten Musk by then, having safely landed a reusable rocket - Blue Origin. Richard Branson followed this with his Virgin Galactic lighterlift rockets. Who will win the race for space travel tourism, only time will tell. From page 26 writer Rowena Marella-Daw takes a look at what adventures in space await us and the realities of what it will feel like – and cost – for a truly out-of-thisworld experience. This issue is dedicated to adventure and the diverse activities and sights our planet offers those of us intrepid enough to venture down the road less travelled. We investigate interesting expereince opportunities near and far -from trekking across the Arctic to walking llamas on Dartmoor. Of course the correct wardrobe for adventure helps us enjoy travel even more and our fashion editors unveil new season looks that are both stylish and practical. There’s also a tech special on gadgets that can help you discover the world - and capture the memories. Because as On The Road writer Jack Kerouac said: “In the end, you won’t remember the time you spent working in the office or mowing your lawn. So climb that goddamn mountain.”

INTERVIEW

I

n his home in the Bahamas, where the waves of the North Atlantic Ocean provide a permanent soundtrack, Lenny Kravitz dreamt of music. With each new melody that his subconscious presented, he would leap out of bed and grab his tape recorder before the tune left his mind. These night time song writing sessions formed the basis of his 11th studio album, Raise Vibrations, a 12-song compilation that touches on racism, political corruptness and his mother’s death – all recorded from his Bahamian studio. “I feel like my most authentic self in the Bahamas. Everything makes sense there,” he says of his recording haven. “It’s where my family is from, and it’s the place I’ve called home for a while now. There’s a connection to my roots and there’s a community I’m a part of. I can be me.” The performer is currently in the middle of a world tour, the last date of which will see him take to the stage at London’s 20,000-capacity O2 area. But between selling out stadiums, he flits back to the Bahamas, where he feels most at home. His most recent project with luggage brand TUMI took place here – a campaign, shot with his Hollywood actress daughter Zoë, for the brand’s Alpha 3 range, a new iteration of its 35-year-old Ballistic Nylon collection. The short flick focuses on the idea of travelling to create memories. The location was a fitting setting for the pair’s film debut together. 23

What’s the significance of the campaign’s location to you? Z: The Bahamas holds a lot of meaning for me. When I was a kid, it was like a magical place that my dad talked about a lot with so much love and passion. I think it always made him feel connected to his mum – my grandmother – who called it home. I also saw it as a peaceful place where you could go and rejuvenate. It’s a special trip he shared with me. I have so many wonderful memories associated with the Bahamas. What attracted you to working with TUMI? L: I’ve been a TUMI customer and admirer of the company for as long as I’ve been touring. When you’re travelling and living out of a suitcase, your luggage becomes an extension of your home—and yourself for that matter. It’s the one thing that’s always with you: on the plane, on the tour bus, in the hotel room, backstage, or on set. So, you want it to be reliable, durable, and make a statement. For me, TUMI embodies all of those qualities to the fullest. This campaign is the first time both you have worked together on film – how was that? Z: This campaign is about connecting with ourselves, our roots, and with each other. Being on-camera together for the first-time was really special. It’s kind of surprising that it took this long, but it was all meant to be. It was also really fun working with my dad. I can’t believe it took this long, but the universe has a funny way of working things out. What is the quality you most enjoy in each other? L: I love how Zoe doesn’t settle. She works harder than anybody I’ve ever met. When she says she’s going to do something, she does it better than anyone. She pushes harder. She fights harder. I couldn’t be more proud of the woman she has become. Z: I love my dad’s good heart, respect for others, and sense of humor. How do you ensure getting quality family time together when your schedules are so busy? L: You make the time for it. We talk as much as possible on the phone, so the connection is always strong. Communication is open. When we get the chance—and it doesn’t matter where in the world I am—I find a way to see her. Family is the most important thing to both of us. How do you define the perfect journey? Z: The ones that are so good, you forget to take pictures. L: To me, the perfect journey is one where I learn something about myself as well as the people in the community where I am visiting. You take away an immaterial souvenir in the form of a lesson or a memory. You carry those with you forever. The perfect journey ends with that. What’s next? Z: I am developing a TV show. I am excited for Big Little Lies season 2 to air in June, and hopefully spending a lot more time with my family and friends. L: This year has been transformative and important for many reasons. I put out a record I’m very proud of. I’ve been on the road a lot. There have been a myriad of design and creative projects. In the middle of all this, we’re trying to do as much as we can to give back, especially in The Bahamas where I live. I’m pushing towards the same things I’ve always pushed toward. It’s art, it’s creativity, and it’s doing a little good in the world that really could use more good. Tumi’s Alpha 3 collection is out now, tumi.com 24

an’s fascination with the universe knows no bounds. It’s as if our brains had been preprogrammed to unravel the mysteries and magnitude of space, pre-destined to explore the depths of our solar system and beyond. Space travel, moon landings, time travel: these amazing concepts fascinated the likes of H.G. Wells with stories such as The Time Machine (1895) and The First Men in the Moon (1900), along with Jules Verne’s prophetic From the Earth to the Moon (1865). These men imagined a future that is now our present. Warp speed to 1969, a year of milestones in aviation and space exploration. In March that year, the Concorde made its first supersonic flight across the Atlantic, cruising at more than twice the speed of sound. On 20 July, astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon, the biggest scientific achievement in human history. But what was deemed as “one giant leap for mankind” took huge sprints backwards as a result of government funding cuts and waning public interest in NASA’s space exploration programmes, rendering the 1972 Apollo 17 flight the last mission to the moon. In December that same year, US president Richard Nixon put the final nail in the coffin of space exploration by announcing: “This may be the last time in this century that men will walk on the Moon”. Indeed it was. As we commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing this year, there is good reason to be excited once again, as private companies, wealthy investors with multi-billion dollar stakes in space tourism and exploration take on the challenge to catapult man back to the moon, then Mars. This rapidly emerging industry referred to as NewSpace encompasses global aerospace initiatives developing technologies that will provide faster, more efficient and cheaper access to the outer limits of our world. The space race is on once again. All the major players in this race share the same vision of eventually building settlements on the moon and Mars. They all promise a life-changing experience that may be a once-in-alifetime journey, or perhaps a one-way ticket to another world. But before you get carried away, it’s important to know what you’re signing up for. SUB-ORBITAL SPACEFLIGHTS Space tourism, still in its infancy, is taking baby steps. Starting with a sub-orbital flight, the spacecraft needs to be propelled to an altitude of 100km (62 miles) above sea level in order to reach the Kármán line (the border between the earth’s atmosphere and space). At this trajectory, the spacecraft is not capable of orbiting the planet as some might expect. Instead, it will simply fall back to earth. I had the privilege of speaking to retired astronaut, Chris Hadfield, the first Canadian to walk in space. He has taken part in two Space Shuttle missions and served as commander of the International Space Station. He describes what the experience would be like on board a sub-orbital spacecraft. “A ride on Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic or [Amazon founder] Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin sub-orbital rocket is going to be dramatically different than a ride that is established in orbit. You’ll be lying down as you lift off, so the blood won’t drain from your head. You’ll feel as though three people are lying down on top of you. That’s what g-force is – multiples of your own weight. The carrier plane ride takes the better part of an hour, then the spacecraft’s rocket fires and shoots straight up, and you’ll feel weightless for four to six minutes. As the rocket slows down, you’ll start feeling the effects of gravity again, and deceleration will squish your back for another few minutes. If you’re in a Virgin 28

Galactic capsule, you’ll feel like being in a glider as you come back to earth. On Blue Origin, your capsule will land with a parachute. “The three main things you’ll experience are: riding a rocket into space, being weightless more than 20 seconds at a time (similar to being on a zero gravity airplane), and the view from the window. You are way above the atmosphere, the sky is perfectly black, you can see a thousand miles to the horizon, and you’re high enough to see the curvature of the earth.” The buzz-word in 21st-century new-age spacecraft technology is ‘reusability’, which will cut down the cost of sub-orbital spaceflights, and Virgin Galactic is one of several enterprises utilising reusable spacecraft technology. During a successful test flight in December 2018, its VSS Unity WhiteKnightTwo mothership transported SpaceShipTwo to an altitude of 50,000 feet (16km). The spacecraft then rocketed its way to an altitude of 51.4 miles to reach the edge of space, before heading back to earth in less than 15 minutes. The ultimate plan is to take tourists up to an altitude of 110km (360,890ft or 68 miles), and a seat on this thrill ride will set you back $250,000. And this doesn’t include travel insurance, which could be astronomical. ORBITAL SPACEFLIGHTS Orbital spaceflights are the real game changers. To attain orbital trajectory, a spacecraft has to reach a minimum altitude of roughly 150km (93 miles) to complete at least one full orbit without propulsion. “A rocket has to cruise at 8km a second to stay in orbit,” explains Hadfield. “That’s 28,800km (17,895 mph), which translates to five miles a second, and nearly 25 times the speed of sound.” In comparison, the International Space Station (ISS) orbits the earth at an average altitude of 400km (240 miles). A major contender for orbital spaceflights is SpaceX, founded by Elon Musk in 2002. In 2012, the brand’s spacecraft Dragon successfully delivered cargo to and from the International Space Station. Launching Dragon with its seven passengers into orbit requires enormous power from Falcon 9, the first orbital-class reusable rocket. SpaceX also has ambitions to build the next generation of fully reusable launch vehicles capable of transporting humans to Mars and beyond. Not to be left behind, Jeff Bezos entered the arena with Blue Origin’s New Glenn spacecraft designed to take paying passengers and payloads into orbit. LIFE IN SPACE Houston-based Orion Span’s primary mission is to ‘build and sustain human communities in space’, although its more immediate goal is to launch the ‘first luxury hotel in space’, selling the dream of going on board the Aurora Station as though it was a packaged holiday. It plans to launch the Aurora Station in 2021, then take four passengers and two crew up in 2022. A 12-day sojourn will cost each passenger $9.5 million ($750,000 a night). At 200 miles above sea level, the all-inclusive deal comes with weightlessness, a Holodeck VR experience, private ‘suite’ for two people, free WiFi and orbits around earth every 90 minutes, meaning you’ll get to see a sunrise or sunset every 45 minutes. Training as an astronaut will be an integral part of the experience, condensing the usual astronaut training programme duration from two-years to three months. Apparently, it will be done in stages, comprising online tutorials, followed by in-person training three months prior to take-off. During this crash course, a passenger is expected to learn the ‘basics of space flights, orbital mechanics and the pressurised environments in space’. Passengers who get through the initial training will LU X U R Y L ON D ON .C O.U K

also have to complete a modular training programme while in space, and those who make it will earn an Orion Span Astronaut Certification (OSAC). REALITY CHECK “Is it worth the risk?”, I ask Hadfield. He gave a stark warning: “It’s going to be dangerous, especially early on. It’s not perfect and the technology is new – there will be crashes”, he warns. “There is a much higher level of risk involved. This [spacecraft] is a rocket, and if it fails then there is no guarantee your vehicle is going to save you. “When we first started flying the space shuttle, we weren’t wearing space suits. And then we had the Challenger disaster.” There have been debates about whether the pressure suits might have saved the lives of some of those on board. “As an astronaut, I want to wear a pressure suit, because if one little valve fails, or one of the windows blows out, if you’re not in a pressure suit, you’re dead. After the Challenger incident, NASA learned its lesson, and since then every astronaut had to wear a pressure suit.” Virgin Galactic is collaborating with a sports brand to design space suits for its passengers and pilots. SpaceX is not taking any chances either, so its custom-made space suits will feature cooling systems, touchscreen compatible gloves, a flameresistant outer layer and audio protection during ascent and re-entry, among others. Safety is at the forefront of everyone’s mind, and despite all the warnings, necessary precautions and potential risks, those who have the funds to boldly go are likely to be rewarded with a truly unforgettable experience. HOUSTON, WE HAVE A PRALINE Dining in space has improved since the days when an astronaut’s sustenance came from a toothpaste tube. According to the European Space Agency (ESA), the International Space Station’s menu comprises more than 100 items, and astronauts can choose their daily three-course meal prior to the space flight. A great majority of the food is freeze-dried or dehydrated, and includes fruit, pre-packed meals, frozen vegetables, desserts and dairy. Salt and pepper come in liquid form, although salt is said to accelerate bone loss while in space. Extra Vitamin D is required to compensate for lack of sunlight. Banned foods include bread, alcohol, soda and pizza. Apparently, a person’s sense of taste diminishes in space, and with the absence of pizzas and carbonated drinks, obesity may actually vanish in space. The good news is, tourists spending some time in space will be able to take a few treats. Retired Swiss astronaut Claude Nicollier worked for ESA for almost 30 years, and during that time he took exquisite Swiss chocolates with him on space missions. “I took mainly pralines, but the owner made special ones in the shape of space shuttles, Hubble space telescopes and satellites, and delivered them a few days prior to launch, so we always had very fresh chocolates on board,” recalls Nicollier. “It was so much fun and delicious, and I am of the opinion the chocolates contributed to success on my four space missions, because they had such a positive effect on crew wellbeing and morale.” EARTH AND ABOVE The starting pistol has already been fired, the sprint for space is on – a thrilling prospect that could come with a price. Researchers estimate that as many as 1,000 sub-orbital spaceflights per year will be launched by 2020, which translates to potential emissions of 600 tonnes of black carbon. The effects of climate change are visible from space. And in time, space 32

F E AT U R E

debris will also increase. So the big question we should be asking is what these space companies are doing to counteract that. Seen from space, planet earth appears to have no borders, territorial segregation, poverty or conflict. If only that were true. “I’ve been around the world 2,600 times and it changes my fundamental philosophy of the sheer nature of the human existence. I think it would be healthy for us to have access to a vantage point where people can have an improved perception of the world”, says Hadfield. Astronauts and scientists working at the International Space Station are looking for solutions not just for space exploration, but for improving and saving lives on earth. There’s no doubt that space tourism is set to be an exciting part of our future. Orbiting the earth and travelling to distant planets will become a reality. And perhaps being able to look down at our own beautiful but fragile planet will prompt us to treat it and the vast space above us with the respect they deserve.

id you know that 95% of the sun’s rays can travel through the clouds? That’s why it’s always best to wear SPF throughout the year to avoid damage - even if it is overcast. The skin on the face is thinner and receives the most exposure, so it is especially important to make sure you’re applying enough sunscreen in that area. Don’t forget to check the sell by date of your sun cream. Applying out of date cream is completely ineffective at protecting you against the sun. The heat is also very drying so ensure you’re continuously drinking water and always moisturise after exposure. The phrase ‘8 by 8’ is useful at keeping track of how many glasses of water you consume before the end of the day; eight glasses by 8pm (a minimum of 2 litres) and you’ll have had your fill for the day. If you do experience sunburn, a cooling shower and soothing body lotion, such as our sk:n Calming Body Lotion, will help lock in essential moisture to help your skin repair itself. Aloe Vera is also an after-sun essential and an amazing natural ingredient that cools and soothes with

healing properties. It contains two hormones, Auxin and Gibberellins, which have anti-inflammatory properties and help with new cell growth, so your skin will be back to normal in no time. If you’re worried about sun damage, schedule yourself in for a free consultation and skin scan at one of our 52 state-of-the-art clinics. We offer worldleading dermatology expertise on the high street and our complimentary assessment reveals what is going on underneath the surface of the skin. Our dermatologists can also use dermoscopy to examine moles for potential risks of skin cancer. All our clinics are regulated by the Care Quality Commission and home to some of the country’s leading doctors, dermatologists and plastic surgeons. To keep your skin healthy on a daily basis, it’s important to thoroughly cleanse every night to remove any trapped particulate matter and unclog your pores. With pollution levels at an all time high in London, overexposure produced by nitrogen oxide can lead to issues such as premature ageing, wrinkling and loss of skin elasticity. A thorough cleansing ritual is key to combating this. To be effective against pollution, our skincare regime needs to hydrate, strengthen and protect the skin’s natural barrier and deliver the necessary antioxidants, combat inflammation and of course, include adequate sun protection. I recommend trying sk:n’s award-winning HydraFacial treatment that uses revolutionary technology to exfoliate, hydrate and deep clean.”

GREEN PARTY Getting kids to eat their veggies is a constant battle isn’t it? But according to a recent survey, it’s London parents who are most determined to get their youngsters eating their greens, with more than 40 per cent making healthy eating a top priority. Yet nationwide stats show that only nine per cent of children get their five-a-day and one in four get just two portions of fruit or veg per day. Clearly, it’s not easy to get them to hoover up broccoli and carrots. While nothing beats the actual food, a good vitamin supplement can help support your children, especially if they shy away from greens. Higher Nature are one of the best brands around because they make vitamins kids actually enjoy taking. From their Vital Vits chewy multivitamins to the Smart Focus orange jellies that contain omega 3 EPA, DHA and omega 6 GLA and the minty vitamin D spray, the award-winning range offers a great selection to aid children’s mental and physical development. airing sweet and savoury foods together often divides people. But I suspect that those who are against the dish just haven’t tried the right one. At BIRD in Wharf Kitchen, the team are making a strong case in favour of this unusual yet delicious combination. And with the restaurant being London’s first fried chicken and waffles joint, where better to explore this exceptional flavour experience? Upon my visit to the Canary Wharf branch, my friend and I had high hopes. With a range of wings, drumsticks and tenders alongside juicy American burgers to choose from, we were getting hungrier and hungrier just reading the menu. On Wednesdays, BIRD offers 12 wings and a house beer for just £10 – something we quickly scribbled into our diaries for the next visit. Although there was plenty to choose from, we just knew we had to try the restaurant’s famous waffle burger that we’d heard so much about. When the dish was served, I didn’t know where to start – the burger comes stacked in the impressive form of a waffle tower. After attempting to deconstruct it, I took my first bite and instantly went in for another. The chicken was so succulent and had an irresistibly crispy coating. Sandwiched between the softness of two freshly griddled waffles, the outcome is divine. Not only do you get the crunch of the batter and the tenderness of the meat but the delightfully fluffy texture of the waffle too. LU X U R Y L ON D ON .C O.U K

Sandwiched between the softness of two freshly griddled waffles, the outcome is divine The chicken comes fresh from a family-run farm in the Yorkshire Wolds and is brined in buttermilk, tossed in a secret gluten-free spice mix and fried in 100 per cent rapeseed oil. Enhanced with the waffle burger’s Canadian maple syrup, house BBQ and hot sauce, the result is an expertly balanced taste sensation. Although I wanted to devour every last piece, I couldn’t finish the generous portion size. But I am no amateur and that didn’t stop me from asking for the dessert menu. The doughnut ice cream sandwich instantly caught my eye and I opted for a warm glazed Oreo doughnut filled with fresh whipped cream, a scoop of vanilla ice cream and drizzled in chocolate sauce. It was the ultimate indulgence. We found it best shared between two but I offer you a word of advice: make sure you pick the bigger half. BIRD, Wharf Kitchen, Jubilee Place 47

eventy years ago, Bernard Gantmacher and Rebecca Rose, shirt makers for the likes of Brooks Brothers and J.Press, were convinced by their two sons to create their own line of shirts. Combining Bernard’s in-depth collar knowledge and Rebecca’s buttonhole prowess, the family launched their own brand in 1949 and called it GANT. In the seven decades since the label was founded, it has introduced innovative design features to the world’s wardrobes. Its pioneering creations include an award-winning button tab and the ‘locker loop’, first introduced in the mid-1960s to the brand’s dress shirts, which were popular with American students. Today it is recognised as the brand that brought button-downs to the mass market. But shirts have been just one of many clothing categories that GANT has domineered. For the brand’s 70th

“We are proud of our heritage as highquality craftspeople” anniversary, a new campaign, Seven Decades, Seven Icons, launched in February, highlighting a series of GANT classics that have been revised from the brand’s archive and include preppy chinos, varsity jackets and club blazers. The Seven Icons are being released throughout the year over the course of seven months – one for each decade since the label was founded. “We are proud of our heritage as passionate and innovative high-quality shirt makers and craftspeople,” Karen Vogele, GANT’s executive vice president of product and design, said. “As the team

started thinking about how to celebrate our 70 years through the collection, we took a look into our archive and soon realised that these seven pieces of preppy American sportswear have really stood the test of time.” GANT’s official anniversary will be celebrated this month, and to mark the occasion the Canary Wharf store will be hosting a series of events and exclusive promotions from 9 May, including the opportunity to win prizes and raise a toast to the anniversary. merican fashion leader Calvin Klein is revered for its ability to celebrate tradition whilst continuing to evolve its aesthetic, and the store at Cabot Place offers a refined range of menswear, womenswear and swimwear for spring 2019. This season, Calvin Klein introduces a selection of new underwear ranges that take inspiration from the brand’s rich heritage and fuse it with Chief Creative Officer Raf Simon’s signature vision of America. To front the new campaign, Calvin Klein has chosen Stitches star, Shawn Mendes. The brand says it aims to adhere to its clean and seductive aesthetic with its new line. Taking cues from classic American themes, the palette incorporates a strong red, white and blue colour scheme. The new collection is made up of several ranges. For both men and women, Statement 1981 offers pieces that pay tribute to the year Calvin Klein Underwear first debuted and introduce the reimagined logo. In Modern FLX, a smooth microfiber finish adds a modern day feel to an archive style. magine travelling through the open air across the heart of Canary Wharf from the second tallest skyscraper in the UK. On 30 June 2019, daring fundraisers will have the opportunity to take on ZipLondon, a 600 metre zip line that extends out from the 210 metre-high summit of One Canada Square. The zip wire will be rigged in one night by a team of worldclass line rescue experts from London Fire Brigade and it will be one of the steepest and longest running urban zip lines ever constructed. LFB’s Assistant Commissioner and Project Sponsor Andy Roe says, “This is a very serious endeavour. We’re rigging a super yacht rope supervised by our Urban Search and Rescue Team. The experience will help us demonstrate to the world, the extraordinary capability of London Fire Brigade.” From the 51st floor of One Canada Square, the zip wire will soar across Canary Wharf, eventually landing in Westferry Circus. This never-to-be-repeated event will be held in support of two life-saving institutions close to Roe’s heart: The Fire Fighters Charity, which provides physical and mental health support for the fire service community, and Evelina London Children’s Hospital which cares for children and young people across South London and South East England. “The Fire Fighters Charity provides incredible support to LFB and to fire and rescue service personnel across the UK, including help with anxiety, fear, insomnia and injuries.” With Evelina London, Roe’s connection is more personal. “They saved my son, Zaki’s life. As a parent I can’t explain the gratitude you feel towards an institution that does that.” ZipLondon’s fundraising target is £2million and it is hoped that each ‘zipper’ can raise in the region of £50,000. However, applicants can discuss alternative targets. 68

dventure is in my genes. I was born while my parents were on safari in what is now Zambia, in 1942. I grew up running wild on our farm in Kenya and when I would ask my father – a colonel in the King’s African Rifles – where we were going on holiday, he would reply, “somewhere we can’t drink the water”. In 1962, my parents and I founded a safari company, Abercrombie & Kent, and since then I’ve packed a lot in. I’ve climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, hiked to Tiger’s Nest in Bhutan and circled the earth along the Equator. I was the first to journey from the source of the Upper Amazon to where the river meets the Atlantic Ocean and I’ve been to Iraq with some special forces. I have been to the edge of space in an English Electric Lightning, travelling at mach 2.2 at 21km up, and have also been to base camp Everest. I was officially the last person in the 20th century to stand on the North Pole, after a quick swim. Like all dedicated travellers – and anyone who has caught the adventure bug – I still have more places I want to explore. I travel approximately 270 days each year; I’m obsessed with the Been app, which reveals that I have visited most of the world’s countries. In the next few years I want it to be 100 per cent. The

72

desire to see the whole world is the driving factor behind Inspiring Expeditions by Geoffrey Kent, a series of trips which have been personally designed by me. My recent expedition to the South Pole is my latest and perhaps most challenging adventure. Along with seven intrepid guests, I spent the latter part of December 2018 in this vast wilderness. For the past three years, I have been occupied with an obsession to go on a journey across Antarctica. Like my hero of heroes, Sir Ernest Shackleton, I dreamed of getting to the South Pole. Unlike Shackleton, who led three British expeditions to the Antarctic, I wanted to do it in comfort and five-star style. When most people speak of their trips to Antarctica, they will have travelled by cruise ship from Ushuaia to the Antarctic Peninsula, a 1,300km chain of mountains and volcanoes that juts north towards South America. My expedition was to a dramatically different destination. Antarctica is mind-bogglingly big, and the area that I’m talking about can’t be accessed by cruise ship. To put it in perspective, to get to the South Pole from our base inside the Antarctic Circle required an eight-hour flight, a refuelling stop and the crossing of a time zone. Our group – consisting of three men in their late teens/early 20s, two couples in their 60s and me – set off from sunny

Antarctica is the final frontier; the only place where a traveller can feel genuinely remote Cape Town in mid-December. As we crossed the Antarctic Circle, we entered a world of continuous sunshine. We landed on the first of three ice runways (or more aptly iceways) that A&K constructed in Antarctica for this journey and got our first glimpse of the land of snow and ice at a place named Wolf’s Fang. Here Antarctica is a high desolate white desert where temperatures in summer rarely get above -20°C and the winter average is -60°C. It never rains here and the snow that falls is sparse. With less than 20cm of snowfall a year, Antarctica is technically a desert. It is so dry that with the correct kit on, you feel warmer than on London’s streets on a particularly grim day. It’s the last true wilderness on our planet. It’s the final frontier; the only place where a traveller can feel genuinely remote and know that their footprints may be the first. And if they’re not, well, what a club to be part of. From our base camp in an oasis – a series of rocky outcrops amongst the ice – over the course of eight days our group flew to Atka Bay to view the large colony of emperor penguins there; learned winter skills; explored ice caves; visited both Russian and American research stations; climbed a peak in the Drygalski mountain range; and ventured to the geographic South Pole. From the top of Mount Inspiring (the virgin mountain which our group summited for the first time in the company of Marko Prezelj, four-time Piolet d’Or winner) staring over this vast expanse of white in awe of nature at its most elemental, it’s hard to imagine the flux that this continent is undergoing. Very sadly, Antarctica has experienced an air temperature increase of 3°C – five times the average rate of global warming

as reported by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. This heating up is causing change: perennial snow and ice cover are melting, glaciers are retreating and some ice shelves have collapsed completely. In the past 60 years there has been a loss of 25,000 sq km of ice shelf. The flora and fauna are being impacted too. In fact, they are facing an existential threat. Emperor penguin numbers have declined by up to half in some places and the number of breeding pairs may fall by 80 per cent by 2100. One of the greatest, yet least seen, wildlife spectacles on the planet, the colony of 6,000 breeding pairs at Atka Bay is extraordinary. Two and a half hours by plane from base camp, thousands of adolescents are finding their feet and snow bathing to cool off in strong sun while their parents fish. Though unused to seeing people up close, these animals are under threat from human action thousands of kilometres away. We reached the Pole two days and 107 years after Roald Amundsen, the Norwegian explorer who won the race to the South Pole. Amundsen had gained renown five years previously for being the first to sail the Arctic’s fabled Northwest Passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Standing at the designated marker at the lowest point on earth, you are able to walk around the world in just a few steps. Surrounding the marker are flags from the 12 signatories of the Antarctic Treaty that sets aside the continent as a scientific preserve. It’s a good place to reflect on the adventure of getting here and wonder about what’s going to become of this white desert. And finally, I have South Pole printed in my passport. 75

PATEK PHILIPPE 4978/400G – CALATRAVA “You never own a Patek Phillipe. You merely look after it for the next generation.” The chairman made this motto clear at Baselworld 2019; Patek Phillipe will remain in the private hands of the Stern family. For 2019, the Patek Philippe Diamond Ribbon Joaillerie is available in a new white gold design with a slightly larger diameter, increased from 33.3 mm to 36.5 mm. The intended result of the distinctive diamond embellishment is to “orbit the case like gymnasts’ twirling ribbons.” Set with 770 diamonds in total, with blued gold applied numerals, the watch’s slim and elegant profile is maintained thanks to the integration of the Caliber 240 ultra-thin self-winding movement.

TUDOR BLACK BAY BRONZE Winner of the Petite Aiguille prize at the 2016 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève, the Black Bay returned at Baselworld with a new slate-grey dial and bezel. Its stunning 43mm bronze case, an aesthetic nod to old ships and diving equipment, will develop a patina over the years due to the properties of the metal. The overall visual effect is that of a rich, patinated object that might have sailed the globe on its wearer’s wrist for years at a time. Powering the watch is the Manufacture Calibre MT5601, which is the widest of Tudor’s movements. With its non-magnetic silicon balance spring and 70 hour power reserve, the movement is certified as a chronometer by the Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC).

ROLEX YACHT-MASTER 42 Rolex has a history of accompanying hardy adventurers and sailors, including Sir Robin Knox-Johnston and Sir Francis Chichester. Chichester said about his Rolex watch: “It was frequently banged, also doused by waves coming aboard; but it never seemed to mind all this.” With its Cerachrom bezel insert in matt black ceramic, almost completely resistant to corrosion and scratches, the Yacht-Master has been designed with this rugged functionality in mind. Like all Rolex Professional watches, the Yacht-Master 42 offers exceptional legibility in all circumstances, and especially in the dark, thanks to its Chromalight display. The Oysterflex bracelet combines the robustness and reliability of a metal bracelet with the flexibility, comfort and aesthetics of an elastomer strap. Inside the 18ct white gold case, the calibre 3235 is featured for the first time offering fundamental gains in performance from the previous model.

£21,400 PATEK PHILIPPE 5212A - COMPLICATIONS There are several characteristics that make the 5212 unique. Patek Philippe hasn’t made a steel Calatrava since 2017 and before that, the 1970s. The typography created explicitly for this watch is based on the handwriting of one of the manufacture’s designers; its letters and numbers are absolutely unique. Coupled with the simple calfskin strap, it makes it very avant-garde by Patek’s standards. The new complication inside is built on the caliber 324 movement, which tells the day, date, month and the week.

£25,610 SANDI MADHVANI

Showroom Manager at DMR London “Baselworld was full of excitement and energy with great launches from Patek Philippe, Rolex, and Tudor. We are always taken by surprise with the new collections and I have to admit that the new Patek Philippe 5168g and the Rolex 42mm YachtMaster are the showstoppers for me. It’s very important to be at the show in order to offer feedback to our clients, having the opportunity to try the pieces out in the flesh.” LU X U R Y L ON D ON .C O.U K

ROLEX SEA-DWELLER A paragon of robustness and reliability, the Oyster case of the SeaDweller is guaranteed waterproof to a depth of 1,220 metres, making it just as comfortable at the bottom of the ocean as it is in the boardroom. Original features remain: the helium escape valve, patented by Rolex in 1967, acts as an escape valve for excess pressure built up during resurfacing. For the first time however, 18ct yellow gold has been introduced to the Sea-Dweller on the bezel, winding crown and centre links of the bracelet, giving it a dramatic bold look. Inside, the 2019 Sea-Dweller contains the new high-performance calibre 3235, offering fundamental gains in terms of precision, power reserve, resistance to shocks and magnetic fields, convenience and reliability.

S

pring/summer 2019 saw the eruption of a bevy of interior design trends – all lovingly perfected over the course of the previous year, and we are loathe to let them go. From animal prints and textures to natural materials and shimmering metallics, we have invested time and money into getting the look ‘just so’, which is why one of the most exciting trends to emerge in 2019 – panoramic walls – happily blends all of the above, as well as being both impactful and show-stopping in its own right. Bespoke hand-painted murals and decadent panoramic scenic wallpapers offer a unique decoration that is both luxurious and personal to the homeowner. Murals, whether painted directly on to the wall or papered, are a dramatic, eye-catching feature that can enliven decor and showcase personal character. Ranging from panoramic vistas and scenic tableaux, to decorative chinoiserie and ornate motifs, the options for creativity and imaginative design seem endless. “Aside from the obvious resurgence of scenic wallpapers witnessed in recent years, the Zuber scenes have never ceased to charm the aesthetes of the world since the first one came out of the factory in 1807,” comments Zuber’s spokesperson. “Whether buying a set to cover all walls, or a few drops to use as a painting, the dreamlike landscapes will take you on a journey far from home, to your heart’s content.” Contrary to popular belief, murals are not purely for grand houses. More cosy interiors can benefit from this form of decoration too, with a low ceiling being made to feel taller with clever use of a scenic paper. The key when designing a mural for a modern-height room is to avoid trying to complete the entire design within the space. Instead, cut features, such as tall trees, at ceiling height. Squeezing the entire design in will seem cramped and can transfer

that cramped feeling to the room. But when used correctly, a mural can alter the entire perception of a room completely. “The creation and popularity of our brand comes down to the fact that people are now looking to be more creative with their interior design to give a room more impact and personality,” says Anna Fell of MuralsWallpaper. “Panoramic walls in particular are popular for wide walls that have a lot of potential for making a statement and improving the experience of a room with the right design. Fell suggests limiting a mural to only one wall of a room, with a plain block colour for the other three. “This will create an accent wall that can impact the look and feel of a room without engulfing the space or making it appear smaller,” she explains. “If you're looking for a more transformative feel, however, spreading the panoramic mural across two walls to create a stand-out corner can achieve this.” When it comes to deciding on which rooms to decorate, there are no rules. Dining rooms, hallways and guest bedrooms will get maximum exposure and often provide enough room to opt for a wild design; yawning wine cellars or vast cityscapes can provide incredible depth. Wine wallpapers “lure the eye in” says Nicole Yeardley of WallSauce, adding, “light colours are also

“Light colours are flattering for smaller spaces, so if you’d like that city view, opt for a day time image” flattering for smaller spaces so if you’d like that city view, opt for a day time image.” On the flipside fun feature rooms, such as a lavatory or bathroom, open the door to taking a little more risk with crazy animal motifs or enlarged portraits. With oversized schemes in liveable colour palettes, design lovers need not shy away from the idea of animal print on walls with the introduction of minimalist shapes in maximalist sizes. Whatever your preference, to make sure you select something that truly complements you and your home, be sure to consider how you would like to improve your space. Whether looking to bring the outdoors in or create a jaw-dropping view of your favourite landscape, this should point you towards the right panoramic for you. 80

CHINOISERIE CHIC

Eighteenth-century chinoiserieinspired murals are favoured by the likes of Kate Moss and Alice Temperley. Chinoiserie naturally lends itself to a creative use of the space available, and the timeless designs by Zuber explore landscape scenes that evoke a bygone era in the comfort of your own home.

THE LIVING WALL MONOCHROME MINDSET

Bathrooms and kitchens are often overlooked, but in fact lend themselves well to a bold mural aesthetic. Dark design is the best direction for people who want to ditch the typical blank bathroom look. Instead, seize the opportunity to shroud the space in indulgent deep marble murals and elaborate natural textures to unlock the dormant potential.

FLAGRANT FLORALS

Forest and florals are the biggest trend in photographic murals for MuralsWallpaper. “The feelings of shelter, intimacy and calm that they offer are something people emotionally connect with on an instinctive level, and a relaxing and inviting feeling from a room is something everyone would want,” says Fell.

When does a TV stop being a TV? When it’s The Wall by Samsung. The new 146-inch stunner invokes a term as yet unfamiliar with the broader TV-buying audience: MicroLED. How close together the Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) are is what determines how good the resolution is. The Wall is .84 diodes, whereas most screens are 1.5. The result is other worldly, a hyper-real digital surface for TV, art and interactive experiences capable of changing an entire room. “It moves it out of just the home cinema consideration and into the home living space, where movable artwork is the key component,” says Damon Crowhurst, European Display Business Director at Samsung. “It’s no longer primarily a TV viewing screen, but it becomes an ambient creative experience – a moving feature wall.” The Wall is comprised of micro tile technology (16 tiles per screen) which means it can be scaled to fit any space. Each tile can be removed and replaced making maintenance a doddle, and you can build and rebuild The Wall as often as you like. It has a 1,000-hour lamp, so if you used it 10 hours a day, it would be good for 20 years. “The TV viewing experience has now moved from a cinema proposition into a luxury living space,” says Crowhurst. “That’s where I think the experiential secret lies.” 81

Thursday 2 – Friday 24 May, Daily Estate-wide Free An amazing outdoor exhibition makes its UK premier in Canary Wharf, having previously been shown in Dubai and Amsterdam. Streets of the World by Dutch photographer Jeroen Swolfs offers an intriguing glimpse of everyday life around the globe and portrays a positive visual story of human connection. Swolfs spent seven years travelling the world and photographing the street life of nearly 200 countries. The result is Streets of The World, an impressive collection of 195 huge photo prints that allow you to travel through the continents of Asia, Africa, North and South America, Europe and Oceania to gain a fascinating insight into how our fellow people live today.

GUINE-BISSAU, BISSAU

IN THE PHOTOGRAPHER’S WORDS... “As a photojournalist I noticed that a lot of media focuses on negative press that creates a distorted view of the world. On my travels I discovered plenty of good stories that balance out the negative news and I wanted to put that truth out there. There are, of course, many problems in the world but I believe that we can only face these if we band together. Streets of the World is about the things we share; our basic values, principles and emotions seen through an optimistic lens. I spent five days in each capital and never planned which streets I was going to photograph as I wanted to

speak to the people living their everyday lives there – people like taxi men who knew the areas well. There are a lot of international activities that take place at Canary Wharf so along with the big exhibition areas that are available, it is the perfect place to premiere in the UK. The Dubai exhibit was 2km long and the Canary Wharf exhibit is even bigger. There’ll be displays on big screens and a one-hour video walk to download on your phone that’ll talk you through the stories behind key photographs.” streetsoftheworld.com

LOBBY, ONE CANADA SQUARE Free, open daily

Until Friday 31 May 2019 marks the 35th anniversary of the Association of Photographers (AOP) Awards. Held since the 1980s, the Awards were devised as a showcase for the best in professional photography by AOP members. They were quickly joined by the Open Awards, aimed at non-members, to encourage the development of non-professional photographers. The Student Awards soon followed, open to all students studying photography, a competition that has become a springboard for emerging photographers, helping them get their first major break into the industry. In 2014 both the member and open categories were combined into one main competition. The exhibition includes all the finalists of the AOP Awards 2019 as well as displaying last year’s Student Award winners, together illustrating the great work taking place across the sector. The winners of the 2019 Awards will be announced on May 14 at a special event, dovetailing with Photo London Week Thursday 16 – Sunday 19 May. CARTOGRAPHIC COLOUR Until Monday 27 May

Every Thursday throughout the exhibition, members of AOP staff will lead a tour of the exhibition, commencing at 4pm. No booking necessary, just turn up at the meeting place by Wall 5.

Photographer Giles Revell’s images reinterpret the colours of well-loved flowers, abstracting them to eliminate the distraction of form. Petals and stems are reduced to an accurate graphic rendering of their normal hues. The images, first printed in Cartographic Colour published by Concentric Editions, are on display in the lush green backdrop of Crossrail Place in spring, the season of new growth.

ROOM 13 - OLD FORD PRIMARY SCHOOL The children who attend the ‘Room 13’ Art Studio at Old Ford Primary Academy in Bow have been commissioned by Galliard Homes to create an illustrated timeline depicting ‘The changing faces of Tower Hamlets’ and key events in the borough from the 1700s to the present, including their vision of its future appearance. The final board will be placed on display on Galliard Homes Harbour Central’s new development site located in South Quay. Leading on from this project the pupils will explore in greater detail the current environment of Tower

Hamlets and the way in which pollution, litter and single-use plastics affect local wildlife in the Thames, canals and urban habitats. They will create their own original artworks inspired by this theme, with particular focus on how environmental issues, coupled with positive steps to combat them, can be communicated through art. The result will encompass their concept of how the future of the borough could look if their generation takes positive steps toward change. The finished artworks will be exhibited in Poplar Union (Community Centre) in late May 2019. room13international.org

M

y teenage daughter was excited to be travelling to Majorca, telling me: “That’s where the Love Island villa is.” Within minutes of stepping into Deià’s La Residencia Hotel, however, all thoughts of reality TV shows were forgotten and she declared the hotel and its surroundings the most stunning place on earth. She wasn’t even tempted to look at her phone and declare: “I’ve got a text.” (This joke will be lost on anyone who has not seen Love Island). The hotel itself – made of two manor houses dating from the 16th and 17th centuries – is a gem and must surely top any list for the best hotels in the Balearics. It’s owned by Belmond, which runs the Orient Express, and so is of the high standards you would expect from the group. The view from the hotel’s many aspects is simply breathtaking. It is located amongst olive groves, offering both mountain and sea views, yet is also a stone’s throw from the blue Mediterranean. The hotel sits in the foothills of the towering Serra de Tramuntana hills. You could quite simply gaze across the valley at the village, houses and church and never get bored. Deià is known as a creative hub and has attracted writers, poets and authors for almost a century. Many came to visit the village but were so inspired they never left.

94

One of it’s most famous former residents was the poet and writer Robert Graves, who is perhaps best known for his I Claudius novels. He and his wife, also a writer, moved to Deià in 1946 and renovated a house which has now become a museum. I toured the house alone early one morning and, seeing everything preserved in time (his original rolled up balls of discarded typewriting are still in the waste paper basket) was a little spine tingling. Graves and his wife loved the village and contributed much to its care and development and put it firmly on the map. The couple are buried in the local church, which is also worth walking up the hill to go and see. Locals include Andrew Lloyd Webber, PR guru Lynne Franks and just down the road are Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Designer Matthew Williamson owns a house in the village – and designed a suite at La Residencia which is simply stunning (I warn you against booking this suite; it is such a stylish retreat you will never want to leave your rooms). Williamson said: “I fell in love with Deià from the moment I first visited. It’s one of the places where I feel most creative and it was just such a natural and wonderful starting point for the whole hotel suite concept.” The space oozes a rustic kind of decadence featuring Williamson’s lively trademark colours;

Belmond La Residencia, a boutique spa hotel in the beautiful mountain village of Deià on the north-west coast of the island, is around 40 minutes from the airport in Palma. The hotel is part of the Belmond group. A double room starts from €507 per night for two people sharing. This includes Suite 67, designed by Matthew Williamson, which starts from €2,250 per night. modern yet playful designs, hand-drawn fauna and floral patterns and luxurious textures. We ate at fine dining restaurant El Olivio, set in a 17th-century olive mill and surely one of the most romantic restaurants on the island. Chef Guillermo Méndez uses locally sourced ingredients for the Meditereanean menu and the wine menu is an award-winning list. Breakfast is at Café Miro, named after artist Joan Miró whose paintings adorn the walls. My children were in heaven enjoying the special children’s breakfast food area, which even contained a supply of Kinder chocolate eggs. My youngest spent much of her time in the wonderfully run children’s club. She made great friends and loved taking the hotel’s resident donkeys for a walk and to enjoy a picnic. In the evenings, taking a stroll through the grounds allowed us to chat with other guests while sipping cool Negronis and exploring the bronze sculptures by one of the hotel's resident artists, Juan Waelder. There is also the Poet’s Walk, which leads from the hotel through the olive grove, lined with ornate benches dedicated to great poets. I spent a morning reading there before strolling down a few hundred yards to enjoy the hotel’s spa facilities. It’s no wonder creatives are drawn to this town and this hotel – in such a beautiful setting, it’s hard not to feel inspired.

mpressively large and built to bespoke perfection, a superyacht offers a holiday experience like no other. Unrivalled levels of luxury confront you at every turn. Unimaginable dream destinations await your arrival. Crystal clear waters abundant with tropical marine life become your playground. Whether looking for some long-awaited down time, or seeking the ultimate adventure, life aboard a superyacht is tailored to your every need. It’s an environment where concierge service by the friendliest of crew is at your fingertips day and night. So, when it comes to selecting the right superyacht for you, what are the first steps? What are the key attributes that make a charter yacht successful? Is it flexibility? Accommodating crew who become an extension of the family? A gargantuan collection of mind-blowing water toys? “All of the above,” says Captain Phil Stevens, one of two rotational captains on board 60m superyacht Slipstream. Built at French shipyard CMN in 2009, Slipstream has proven to be a prolific charter yacht over the course of her nine years; there are few places her eye-catching black hull and silver superstructure won’t travel. From the 98

British Virgin Islands to the Baltic, even South America, the yacht cruises where the charters dictate, says Captain Phil. Croatia and Turkey have become particular hotspots for cruising in the summer of late, and along with the Ionian part of Greece, Captain Phil says they are increasingly becoming destinations that can’t fail to please. “I would start off in Athens and finish in Venice, passing

Superyacht charters offer unrivalled adventure and ultimate fun through the Ionian Islands, Montenegro and Croatia along the way. It’s so easy, you can always find somewhere to hide. You can lose yourself there,” he enthuses. Whether seasoned veterans or looking to charter for the first time, guaranteeing the yacht has the right proposition on board in terms of amenities and crew is crucial. From much-needed private couples’ downtime to seeking a prized

family charter vessel, one of the most popular features any yacht has these days is an impressive chest of water toys. The range of availability is vast, from Sea-Doos (personal water crafts) to stand up paddles boards to kayaks. Slipstream’s highly popular 15m tall waterslide descends from the sundeck, and along with inflatable platforms it forms the centrepiece to the enthusiastic crew’s assault course, which they often set up for the more active charter guests. And as a ratified training school, guests can even obtain their jet ski licence during their stay. Whether spending all day tearing across the water at 80mph, learning to sail a Laser dinghy or simply enjoying a gentle swim, it’s unsurprising that most charter guests spend a high proportion of their time in and around the water. But if seeking a family orientated charter, be sure to keep safety at the fore. Both Captain Phil and his rotational colleague Captain Steve Osborne are fathers, which means small yet important details, such as mesh screens and safety gates on the top of the stairwells come as standard. When teamed with a crew of 18 who tend to develop a charismatic rapport with children of all ages, it’s easy to see why families are choosing superyacht charters for the ultimate respite; it offers

unrivalled adventure, ultimate fun for the kids, incredible travel and actual rest for parents, all on board your own private, luxurious space. But it’s not just the children who have all the fun on board charters. Whether advanced or a beginner, taking yoga or Zumba classes on the aft main deck or an insanity fitness session is the perfect postbreakfast workout. And when it comes to food, the proof is in the pudding. Slipstream’s Chef Richard “Tricky” Harrison is somewhat unrivalled in the galley. His protein balls made from dates, lime, coconut, fig, cashew and pistachio nuts are matched only by the array of freshly baked bread (including gluten-free) and vast menu of homemade smoothies and juices on offer; the Super Green Mamba smoothie tantalises the palette with its apple, cucumber, spinach, kale, superfood green powder and lemon combination. Like many head chefs on board superyachts, Tricky cut his culinary teeth at a raft of Michelin-starred restaurants, and now successfully turns his hand to a vast range of differing cuisines. A typical lunch on board may consist of a starter of roasted quail breast with butternut squash purée, Iberico ham croquet, quince jelly and radish, followed by a main of pan fried LU X U R Y L ON D ON .C O.U K

sea bream, crab ravioli, grilled asparagus and saffron broth. Those with a sweet tooth can either be tempted by the likes of an almond financier, Greek yoghurt sorbet and pistachio brittle, or dive head first into a devastatingly decadent selection of homemade ice creams. Just be sure to leave enough room for afternoon tea, and dinner. Family buffets on the bridge deck aft are a popular event, as are themed party nights on the large sun deck on occasion fitted with large glittering disco balls, but superyachts offer a whole lot more than deck parties these days. Sky lounges can double up as indoor cinemas enabling guests to indulge in cosy movie nights to Xbox gaming to reviewing the crew’s drone footage of the day’s adventures. TV on board is far more than a room abounding with comfy sofas and plush furnishings. Yachts of around 60m+ will usually offer sumptuous accommodation for around 12 guests. On board Slipstream, this is made up of seven cabins spread across three decks. This includes two Pullmans (pull-down beds) unconventionally located in the gym – a popular choice with children – as well as room enough for a nanny when required. The VIP cabin with its private balcony separated from crew accessible areas by

a frosted glass screen provides some of the best views on board, while the master suite, with its high ceilings, private study and frosted glass en suite leads directly to the observation lounge. “This area leads out to the foredeck, and is the owner’s wife’s favourite room,” says Captain Phil. Ample opportunities for both indoor and al fresco meals abound, from formal dining in the main salon to a sumptuous sun deck romantic dinner. Perhaps the most breathtaking dining option of all, however, is an intimate meal for two located on a swim platform. “It’s a great base, and certainly isn’t restricted to just watersports,” says Captain Phil. “We hang lanterns and fairy lights for extra ambience, and we serve dinner for up to six people on the water’s edge.” Superyachts provide the ultimate escapism – both on board and location – but understanding what makes the perfect charter beforehand can transform an amazing experience into an unforgettable holiday of a lifetime.

Slipstream is available to charter with Burgess, €329,000-€357,000 per week during summer (high/low), €385,000-€448,000 per week during winter (high/low), burgessyachts.com 99

LINCOLN PLAZA LONDON WORDS ELLEN MILLARD

“W

e have only 100,” our waitress tells me as she passes the drinks menu, a veritable bookbinder with, as promised, a choice of 100 cocktails and a lengthy wine, beer and liquor list to boot. She grins. “I’ll come back.” I’m sat in Jack Speak, the nauticalthemed bar found in Canary Wharf’s newest hotel, Lincoln Plaza London. Part of the Curio Collection by Hilton, the bolthole opened on the Isle of Dogs in January and, like its sister properties in San Diego, Buenos Aires and Reykjavik (to name a few), promised to blend in with the fabric of its surroundings. So, as one would expect in Canary Wharf, Lincoln Plaza London occupies an inconspicuous modern cubic development located amongst a series of similarly inconspicuous high-rise properties. So far, so Canary Wharf. Inside, however, is something of a different story. The Curio Collection was so named in reference to the unique, characterful ethos its hotels would have, and in Lincoln Plaza it has succeeded. An industrial-style reception is offset with plush upholstery and oak furniture and very much riffs on its trendier east London neighbours than it does the surrounding financial district. It’s a similar story upstairs, where rooms are modestly designed with sink-in armchairs, coffee table books and a slick marble bathroom. The food and drink offering is varied

100

and feels as if it has been designed not just with its guests in mind, but the local residents too — and, being a 10 minute walk from the Canary Wharf estate, one would imagine they’d take advantage of it. Indeed, the informal Food Store restaurant has, as the name suggests, an attached grocery, where you can pick up a curated selection of British snacks, drinks and cosmetics, from Dorset IPAs to honey produced down the road by Bermondsey Street Bees. Upstairs, the aforementioned Jack Speak is designed to mimic the ambience of a British Navy officer’s mess in a nod to the surrounding Docklands area, and is a charming place to sample a sundowner or two (we chose the rum-based Dark and Stormy and The Launch, a gin and port concoction, in case you were wondering).

The signature restaurant, Mr Todiwala’s Kitchen, is worth a visit even if you’re not staying at the hotel. Headed up by the man himself, the eatery serves delicious pan-Indian dishes — try the beetroot and coconut samosas, the chunky lamb and lentil dhaansaak and, if you’ve any room left, the kulfi, a traditional Indian ice cream that comes in pistachio, saffron, rose and hazelnut flavours. There’s a fitness room for gym bunnies and, in June, the hotel will open its spa facilities, namely a sauna, steam room and an 18m swimming pool. For those not willing to leave work at the door, there are a series of meeting rooms for conferences. And if that isn’t enough to entice you, there are 100 cocktails just waiting to be sampled. Cheers to that.

he whale in front of me is slumbering. It lolls in the water – its terrific form bobbing from side to side with the gentle swish of the ocean’s current. It has a calf with it, a replication in miniature that spy-hops and splashes in the shallow bay, thrusting its fins skywards and raising its head from the water so I can see the barnacles encrusting its head like briny jewels. I’m in the tiny town of De Kelders on South Africa’s Western Cape. From the shoreline here it’s easy to spot some of the hundreds of southern right whales that use these waters to rest and suckle their calves each year. As I cast my eye out to sea I can see about 10 of the beasts, each with a calf, wallowing like sleeping giants in the calm, inky waters. Cape fur seals putter past too, as whale calves breach enthusiastically in the distance – hurling themselves clean out of the water in a series of gymnastic leaps – and every so often, the sound of cetaceans exhaling fills the air like heavy-duty hydraulics. I’ve come to the Western Cape in the hope of seeing the marine Big Five: whales, sharks, seals, dolphins and penguins. I’m wellversed in big-game safaris, having been lucky enough to witness sleuthing coalitions of cheetahs and marauding prides of lions before. But so far, most of the creatures we’re looking for have proved elusive. Given that the nearby town of Gansbaai describes itself as the Serengeti of the Sea, I’m hoping that’s about to change.

104

My base for exploring is the haven-like Grootbos Private Nature Reserve. Occupying an area of fynbos biome stretching across 25 square kilometres, Grootbos practically explodes with a riot of flowers (there’s more plant diversity here, apparently, than in the Amazon rainforest). Our guide Tiaan is just about the most enthusiastic person I’ve ever met, and revels in taking us on plant safaris around the property to explore its 806 species. “What I like best about plants is that they don’t run away,” he calls from the front of the jeep, as we slalom through lush fields of scabiosa, butterfly bush, sour figs and lobelia. We pass huge clown-like protea, which Tiaan leaps out of the van to sniff lustily, and whizz past plants that look like sweetcorn, cacti and elephant’s ears. Back at our private villa – a glass-fronted, mahogany and marble beauty with a baby grand piano in the lobby, highceilinged master suites and bottles of creamy South African Amarula liqueur on the shelves – I soak up the sunset sea views as whale spouts fill the horizon. It’s spectacularly beautiful, and I don’t think I’ve ever been anywhere quite so peaceful, but I’m itching to get out onto the ocean and into the path of the Big Five. Next morning, I’m up early to head out with Dyer Island Cruises, a company that focuses on whale watching and conservation, with marine biologists on every boat. The morning is crisp, the air flecked with sea spray, and as we motor out of the

harbour we’re immediately greeted with an unusual sight. A pod of Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins surrounds the boat, their pinky-grey bodies glistening in the early morning sunshine and their little snub snouts breaking the water like tiny swords. There are thought to be only about 500 individuals on the entire South African coastline, so it is a privileged encounter indeed (and a big old tick for my Big Five checklist). What we see next, however, breaks my heart. It’s a mother southern right whale with two calves. At first, I’m delighted to see twins. “How sweet,” I think. “How special.” Until the biologists tell us that twins don’t exist in the whale world – there’s no way a mother could sustain and nurture two babies. This calf, they say, has been separated from its own mother and has been on its own, and vulnerable, for the past few days. It has now attached itself to this mother whale and her calf in the hopes that they will look after it, and has even been trying to suckle. When it approaches the boat, they tell us it’s checking to see if we’re its mother. My heart aches even more. But we must plough on, and as thousands-strong flocks of cormorants glide across the water in front of us, we make our way to the mist-cloaked islands around Shark Alley. Dramatically buffeted by gnarly waves, the rocky islands are home to huge densities of seals. Thousands of the creatures bark and waddle and hoot and flop into the water to riotous effect. As we motor past Geyser Rock, great gaggles of them cling to its folds – 106

honking, chattering and draping their fleshy bodies over boulders. The smell is overpowering, stinging my eyes and nostrils, so I’m slightly relieved when we continue on to the next island, to spot a tiny huddle of African penguins, monochromatic against an ocean of white gulls. There’s only one animal left on my list: sharks. But the biologists aren’t confident. Killer whales, it seems, have decimated the current population of great whites, picking off the predators and leaving their bodies to wash up on nearby beaches. The remaining sharks have scarpered, meaning slim pickings for those, like me, who are desperate to see them. This change has had a knock-on effect for other animals. The lack of sharks means the seal population has exploded to almost uncontrollable proportions, and they’re getting lazy, hunting penguins for the fish inside their bellies instead of heading out into the deeper waters to hunt for themselves. ON DRY LAND COMBINE YOUR SEA SAFARI WITH A TRADITIONAL GAME EXPERIENCE FOR THE MOST EPIC WILDLIFE ADVENTURE OF ALL Hewn into a hillside, deep within South Africa’s Sabi Sabi private game reserve, Earth Lodge is probably the only building in the world to have had elephants clambering on its roof. Not only that, it’s had wild dogs use it as a sentry point, leopards chasing impalas off the top of it, and lions feasting on their grisly kills just metres from guest’s suites. Because this is real luxury in the wilderness. Like a sort of ‘safari Bond lair’ you can’t actually see Earth Lodge – one of National Geographic’s unique lodges of the world – until you’re facing it head-on. Walls are a mixture of mud, concrete, buffalo thatching grass and stone, and much of the furniture is artfully constructed from wood felled by a huge storm that raged while the lodge was being built. Beyond its pops of chrome and elegant modern touches, the space is so in tune with the landscape that dazzling rainbow skinks have claimed it as their own – the lizards flitting across the walls with a flash of colour – while weaver birds dart balletically through the communal spaces on their way to making their intricate nests. Food here is exquisite – I tuck into a feast of tender meat and fish dishes, palate-dazzling salads and lashings of South African wine, all served up by the lodge’s wonderfully warm staff. But it’s the safari experience that’s the main draw here. We head out each morning and afternoon, scything through silver cluster leaf bushes, acacia and marula trees searching for a menagerie of wildlife. And boy do we get it. Just minutes into our first drive we come across a male cheetah, resplendent in the afternoon amber sun. After that, huge herds of elephants pass like gentle giants, and magnificent rhino mothers usher their tiny calves across the vast, scrubby lands. The land here is at its most fecund after heavy rains, and as dusk approaches, the skies fill with flying termites, glistening in the setting sun, while lone hyenas lumber ungracefully across our path. Owlets call as we spot tiny terrapins in puddles and hippos wallow gloriously in muddy lagoons. Under lavender skies and a slither of crescent moon we meet the ‘Dugga boys’ – a group of older male buffalo that are known for their aggression. And when night falls, by spotlight, we find a pair of mating leopards, breathless and lolling across tree branches after their day’s efforts. Leaving Earth Lodge is hard. It’s found its way into my soul and set up camp there. But I needn’t be too dismayed, even the transfer to the airport comes up trumps, as we pass two female lions, bloated with a zebra kill at the side of the road. That’s just life in the bush for you. Stay at Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve from £830 per person per night, including activities, all food and drink and transfers, sabisabi.com
