egardless of how much we may love our jobs, there’s a triple-letter abbreviation that many of us will be whole-heartedly embracing this month – OOO. It’s estimated more than 50 per cent of Wharfers will be setting their Out of Office for at least one week this month, so expect the Estate to quieten. We’ll manage with ease to get a seat on the DLR, the queues will pass even more quickly at Wharf Kitchen – and getting an al fresco table at Carluccio’s will be a cinch. This issue is packed with ideas for getting the most from your adventures whether you are travelling solo, in a couple, or getting to spend quality time with your children. Parents now look for more activities for their kids from a holiday than just buckets and spades. On page 90 we review luxury hotels and resorts offering children sports and skills academies that not only give their parents some downtime by the pool, but can also kick start a lifelong passion for a hobby. In our style pages there’s plenty of swimwear and sports looks for all generations and a wealth of ideas for Canary Wharf events happening on the Estate this summer. And as the Grand Prix continues, we interview Christian Horner, Team Principal of the Red Bull Racing Formula One team. He’s a busy man – managing his team and flying around the globe for racing weekends. He’s also married to Spice Girl Geri and father to their son Monty. He tells how he adores his work – but loves to kick back, put on his OOO and relax with his family on holiday. Enjoy August – it’s bound to fly by.

What have you been working on for this issue? This month I have explored the excitingly innovative world of sustainable swimwear (p.54). What are your summer holiday plans? I have already been to Split in Croatia, which was beautiful, and coming up is a relaxed long weekend with friends and family in Rye near Brighton. What are you looking forward to in August? A night at Dormy House in the Cotswolds with my husband, one of the most perfect English weekendaway destinations.

What have you been working on this issue? When my kids were young, holidays felt anything but restful, but I’ve discovered it is possible to have a relaxed break and keep the children happy. For this issue I reviewed the wonderful Sani Resort, in Greece (a tough job, but someone’s got to do it) (p.100) What are your summer holiday plans? Visits to our local outdoor pool, day trips to the coast and a family holiday to Biarritz, in south western France, where I plan to spend a lot of time on the beach.

What have you been working on this issue? For this issue I spoke to beautician to the stars Chelsée Lewis (p.46) What are your summer holiday plans? Laughing my head off at Edinburgh Fringe Festival. What are you looking forward to in August? Not needing an umbrella!

What are you looking forward to in August? One of the things I most look forward to in August is having a break from doing the school run and making packed lunches. Simple pleasures.

Exhibition Victoria’s Palace at Buckingham Palace This year marks 200 years since the birth of Queen Victoria. To commemorate the occasion, Buckingham Palace is hosting a special exhibition during its summer opening of the state rooms. The exhibit will explore the life of the influential queen and how she turned the once-private house into the royal residence we know today. Highlights include an oil on canvas portrait of a young Victoria painted by Thomas Sully shortly after she moved into the palace, and a beautiful ball gown worn by the queen to the Stuart Ball in 1851. anerai manufactures one of the most recognisable silhouettes in mechanical watches – but is it risky to be so reliant on one specific aesthetic? All luxury brands strive to create an iconic product family, whether they’re in eyewear, telephones, watches or handbags. We had two families, now we have four: Luminor, Luminor Due, Radiomir and Submersible. We have no plans to launch new families but next year will probably be the biggest ever in terms of new products within the same families – new sizes, new dials, new straps. At the beginning of the year, Panerai started selling watches alongside experiences. Explain the strategy. We want to offer customers access to more than just watches – to limited-edition experiences. We are running three experiences in the next six months, allowing customers who purchase certain watches to dive alongside French free-diving world champion Guillaume Néry; accompany extreme explorer Mike Horn to Svalbard; or train for two days with commandos of the Italian Navy. To be honest, it was an experiment because we had no idea what the response would be – but it’s been a huge success. We had one customer who took all three watches. The price of mechanical watches has soared in the previous decade. Why? The price isn’t really the issue; it’s how much added value you bring to your product. The price is a cocktail of how much you bring to the table creatively, how much you bring in terms of limitation. We want to remain an exclusive brand; we will not increase production quantities in the next five years; the increase in business will come through creativity – new materials, new movements, more complications.

THE BRAND OF THE HOLLYWOOD HARDMAN

Pre-owned watches have become big business – what’s Panerai take? We are running a special test here in London. You can come to our boutique in Bond Street with your preowned watch – it can be from any brand – and we will give you a quotation in association with Watchfinder [both Panerai and Watchfinder are owned by Richemont] as to how much the timepiece is worth. You can then put the value of that watch towards a new Panerai timepiece. Watchfinder will sell your old watch on our behalf. How is e-commerce performing for Panerai? It’s still a single digit share of our business, but it’s no longer a single digit after a zero. I totally believe in e-commerce because e-commerce and social media is about content – product is what you get at the end. Content is what provides your brand with relevance. Panerai is a brand of content – it’s expressive, with a bold product, bold performance and an association with high-performance and extreme sports. As long as we have that, we have a voice on social media and in e-commerce. We put our Submersible Bronzo on Mr Porter and it took one minute and 30 seconds to sell the first five models. We are launching another exclusive product with Mr Porter next year. An increasing number of brands – Audemars Piguet, Breitling, Blancpain, Omega – are abandoning the watch industry’s largest trade shows. Do you still believe in the relevance of such fairs? I strongly believe that Panerai needs a central show. Why? Because we still have 500 doors worldwide and because we speak to a couple of hundred journalists during a show like SIHH. If we had to travel all over the world to meet these people it would take a couple of months, at least. Instead, we spend a lot of money, energy and resources in seeing everyone over a four-day period. It’s not a business-relevant show anymore because our orders are already placed before the show begins. Instead, we should be looking at how we can bring 300 VIP customers to SIHH each year. In 1996, while considering watches for his character in Daylight, Hollywood actor Sylvester Stallone reportedly stumbled across Panerai in a jeweller’s window in Rome. Not only did the Rocky actor purchase a watch for himself, but several Mare Nostrum and Submersible models to gift to friends. He gave one to bodybuilding buddy Arnold Schwarzenegger, who chose to wear it in Eraser (1996).

Courtesy of Stallone and Schwarzenegger, Panerai has since enjoyed screen time in all three The Expendables films (2010-2014), as well as in Jason Statham’s The Transporter (2003) and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s The Rundown (2003). While less strapping leading men have also demonstrated a penchant for the brand’s brawny dive watches – see Hugh Grant in Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001) and Josh Hartnett in Hollywood Homicide (2003) – a cameo in last year’s trigger-happy Death Wish, in which vigilante Bruce Willis is gifted a Radiomir 1940 3 Days Automatic for his birthday, confirms Panerai as the brand of the Hollywood hard-man. 23


How is Panerai addressing its social responsibility? We are about to launch a new programme called Panerai Ecológico, which will see us develop products with integrated recycled elements. We did a watch with explorer Mike Horn earlier this year with a plastic strap made from recycled bottles. Today, about 20 per cent of the value of that product is made from recycled components. Next year we will launch a product made of 40 per cent recycled components. Our target is to be the first brand to have 100 per cent of a watch made from recycled components – including the movement. Hopefully we will achieve this in between three and five years. Sustainability is not just about products; the biggest problem you have as a brand is transportation of people. So we are looking at how we can reduce our exposure to carbon. One way is by holding more video conferences between our headquarters in Geneva, Milan and Neuchâtel, so that less people are travelling between these three locations. We have reduced the amount of material we print by 80 per cent.

Submersible Luna Rossa, £18,300

In August, Max Sirena, skipper of Italy’s Luna Rossa, will take to the waters of Sardinia in a bid to become the official challenger of 36th America’s Cup. Thanks to Panerai, the venerated yachtsman will do so wearing a watch manufactured from the same material as the space-age hull of his 75ft sailboat. Joining compatriot title sponsors Prada and Pirelli, the Florentine watchmaker has created the Submersible Luna Rossa – a 47mm dive watch constructed from super-lightweight, corrosion-resistant carbon fibre and a dial made from the same cloth as Luna Rossa’s sails. 24

Panerai Challenger Trophy

In 2018, Panerai and the Royal Yachting Association announced the Panerai Challenger Trophy: an award that recognises an outstanding young person who has overcome physical, economic or social challenges to achieve a significant milestone within sailing or windsurfing. This year the accolade was granted to Bradley Pedrick, an 11-year-old who sails at Polkerris Beach in Cornwall. As a three-year-old, Bradley had his leg amputated below the knee due to a rare condition; at seven, he had to have kidney surgery and then, shortly afterwards, he suffered serious burns in an accident. Bradley received a grant of £5,000 to continue his development in sailing. Polkerris Beach will also receive a grant of up to £10,000. Three runners-up will receive £2,500 along with £5,000 for their clubs. The trophy, designed by Simon Hasan (pictured), is inspired by Panerai’s classic yacht, Eilean.

Is it possible to predict trends in the watch industry? I’ve never looked at trends. When I was with Roger Dubuis, we were the anti-trend brand. Remember that it was Panerai, in 1993, that pioneered the big, bulky watch when successful watches were small and discreet. I strongly believe in disruptive concepts. Today, I’m more informed by what’s happening in the aerospace business, the yachting business, the supercar business than by what’s happening in the watch industry. When you look at the car industry, there’s a big shift, away from diesel to electric and hybrid engines. Governments are imposing new rules. In our business we have no governments imposing regulations on what we can do with our watches – we have the freedom to be disruptive. What’s the outlook on the luxury landscape from Panerai’s perspective? The luxury industry has never been so strong – as long as you are bringing creativity and disruption in terms of your product development. We don’t see any elements of our business slowing down. There are so many more positive factors than negative because you have a growing number of rich people in the world; in China and India today, and in Vietnam and Indonesia tomorrow. he family summer holiday can be the best two weeks of the year, allowing you to spend precious quality time together and create the kind special memories you can all talk about for years to come. But with the stresses of modern life and long-working hours, ensuring your whole family enjoys those 14 days takes careful planning and the clever use of some mindful travel tricks – starting with getting the kids involved with planning in the run up to trip.

“Kids have very little control over their lives at school, so let them have some choice about how they spend their holiday,” explains Tanith Carey author of What’s My Child Thinking? Practical Child Psychology for Modern Parents, written with Dr Angharad Rudkin. “Have a family meeting before you leave and look through some brochures or websites so they feel their opinion counts too,” says the parenting expert, who says letting youngsters take part in aspects of the planning will really help everyone to connect.

Indeed, factoring in elements to suit everyone could be the key to success. If you are planning quite a grown-up activity such as sight-seeing in the morning, then ringfence some pool time in the afternoon and make sure the kids know that’s what’s happening. If each day holds a little something for each family member, no one gets bored or resentful. While little children are chuffed to bits with an ice lolly and 30 minutes at the swings, teenagers can be trickier customers to please if they are missing friends back home or simply ‘bored’ of LU X U R Y L ON D ON .C O.U K

hanging out with mum and dad. The solution to this is often as simple as a bit of time on their own. Consider letting them walk into town alone or read a book at a different pool for the afternoon. If they have made friends, allow them hang out at the beach without you for a couple of hours or ask if your teen fancies signing up to an activity where they will meet others their own age. This giving of independence shows you acknowledge they are growing up and need some space. Studies show that teenagers are more responsive during

family activities if they have had some time to themselves prior to it. Another way to prevent boredom is booking family activities they will get a thrill out of. Think zip wiring, snorkelling or hiring jet skis – not the kind of thing you get to do every day and adventurous enough to prize them away from their phones. And do join them. These really are bonding opportunities that you don’t want to miss. Just because you are away from home, however, doesn’t mean to say you won’t face the same issues you do there. While phones and iPads can be a godsend on a flight, nobody wants to be that family at dinner where all the children are playing on gadgets around the table. “Frame screen-free time as a reward not a punishment. Talk about how lucky you all are that you are putting away your phones, tablets and video games so you can start to really have fun in the real world together,” advises Carey. If you can’t fully detach them from their screens, then allocate a certain amount of time in the day for their use as this will hopefully deter the constant asking. Just as back at home, boundaries and rules are important on holiday. And practice what you preach, urges Carey. “Don't feel guilty about disconnecting from the office. Tell your colleagues you plan to unplug during your holiday so you can connect with your kids instead. This will help co-workers prioritise the essential tasks they need you to do before you go,” she advises. “If you must check messages, tell your office you will only be checking at set times and not to expect responses in between. Put your out of office reply on, with the name of the person who will deal with it in your absence, so colleagues don't expect a response when they message you. Your kids need you to de-stress too and feel that they come first. “But don't expect your holiday – or your kids – to be perfect. We tend to look forward to them a lot, but no holiday is perfect and when we build it up in our minds, we tend to over-react when things don’t go to plan. Accept that things go wrong – or children not always behaving exactly as you would like is part of the process – and you’ll relax a lot more.” Above all remember the most important thing about any family holiday: your kids want nothing more than to be with you. “Children love holidays. Not because they get to go to somewhere new and exciting, but because they get something else they value more – your attention.” 29

THE ATHENIAN WORDS ANNA PRENDERGAST

F

riday lunch times at the Wharf Kitchen: most of Canary Wharf has given up trying to find a lid for their tupperware or a fork in the office kitchen and any remaining meal-prep motivation has already checked out for the weekend. So they find themselves here, inwardly applauding their decision, high on the anticipation of a meal that isn’t last night’s leftovers. At a glance, queues for The Athenian look long. It’s a testament to its popularity; even when other tills have smaller queues or none at all, diners still stand patiently in line for the Wharf’s first Greek street food. Fortunately, the kitchen is efficient and the system slick – food is with you in less than ten minutes, and it’s choosing from the menu that might take a little longer. From souvlaki to gyros, The Athenian has done for Greek food what the Babek Brothers did for kebabs – taken something with a bad rap and turned it into a lunch-break staple across the capital. Business partners Neofytos Christodoulou and Efthymios Vasilakis brought their native cuisine to London in 2014, after realising the city’s current offering was out of date and not reflective of the quality available back home. The two met running separate market stalls and, to paraphrase the Spice Girls, two became one, bringing together gyros and souvlaki with loukoumades (deep-fried honeyed dough balls). Gyros are thick, fresh flat breads, traditionally filled with grilled meat, salad, and chips. The Athenian’s inclusive menu offers veggie and vegan options – halloumi, tomato croquettes or mushrooms – alongside the familiar chicken, pork or lamb. Bread, cheese and chips all in one bite might sound a bit like a recipe for a carb-induced coma. But generosity is a core value of Greek cooking, and fresh, high-quality ingredients – sourced from Greece where possible – ensure that The Athenian’s gyros are filling without being heavy; they’ve got more muscle than a wrap, but less stodge than a sandwich. The combination is key, too – there’s even a word in Greek, ψωμοτúρι, which translates as ‘bread and cheese’, such is its fundamental importance to the country’s culture and cuisine. Sides such as croquettes – made with Santorini tomatoes – or the latest addition to the menu, courgette fritters, come with the restaurant’s secret recipe Athenian Sauce, a sweet, light, mildly spiced dip that you’ll want to soak up with an extra serving of sweet potato fries. Cold cans of Green Cola lemonade line the counter, too, which are sugarfree and sweetened with stevia. “We like supporting Greek suppliers where we can, plus it’s a healthier alternative,” explains Vasilakis. Traditional loukoumades are made for sharing (“Although,” he adds, “I tend not to share, for obvious reasons!”), and come with toppings such as rosewater syrup with cinnamon and walnuts, or chocolate and hazelnuts.

id you know that providing snacks in a meeting can improve productivity, professional relationships and teamwork? Author Steven Rogelberg, a professor of organisational science and psychology, writes in his his book The Surprising Science of Meetings that “Snacks at meetings are a good predictor of positive feelings about meetings. Not only do people enjoy treats, snacks help build an upbeat mood state and foster camaraderie that can carry into the substance of the meeting itself.” Who are we to argue with science? And what snack is more universally loved than a freshly glazed, glistening doughnut? Fortunately for office managers and meeting planners across the city, premium bakery Crosstown Doughnuts has now opened a branch in Canary Wharf. The scratch bakery, which makes their signature yeastraised sourdough doughnuts fresh on site, opened this July in Jubilee Place and has brought its oh-so-Instagrammable sugary rings to coffee breaks across the estate. There’s something for everyone with flavours such as pomegranate and orange blossom and dark chocolate truffle, and vegan options such as lime and coconut (for which they won a PETA Vegan Food Award in 2018). There’s also the option to order boxes to your office, which will a) secure your legacy as the coolest person on the 4th floor, and b) give you and your colleagues the comfort you all crave on a Monday morning. You can also pick up a specialty coffee by Caravan Coffee Roasters for just £2. For founder JP Then, getting facetime with customers is key. ‘We’re really enjoying hosting events, which is allowing us to bring the Crosstown experience directly to clients - just last week we were at Soho House Festival.’ ‘We need to rid ourselves of bad meetings’, Professor Rogelberg adds in his book. We’re sure he meant meetings in which Crosstown Doughnuts aren’t invited - because any jam-filled, compote-glazed, sprinkle-topped presentation is good with us.

Problem areas that in the past could only be done away with by more drastic methods can now be tackled with minimum fuss and cost. ooking great on the beach has long been big business – although this is somewhat ironic given the size of the scraps of fabric worn on the shores of Ibiza, Mykonos, Bodrum and St Barth’s in summer. Although those scraps are tiny, swimwear is often produced using some of the most unsustainable manmade textiles out there. This is a problem, and Mareen Burk saw a solution sooner than many. She quit her job in 2012 and bought a one-way ticket to Colombia. During months of surfing and living a simple life there, she found the current surf and swimwear offering, its fabrics and production methods, “unbearable”. So she set about solving the problem and, in the seven years since, the market has developed apace. “When I founded Mymarini there weren’t many other sustainable swimwear brands at all, so this is a great development in itself,” Burk says. “Another is the progression in sustainable textiles, which are much higher quality than they were a couple of years ago.” And the customers are there, with 56

a greater awareness than ever before. “More and more women want to know where textiles are from and whether they contain any toxins,” confirms Burk. She also explains that quality is of utmost importance in the swimwear industry. “If you take a pair of vintage jeans with holes, you have a cool style. When you have a bleached bathing suit or one with worn-out elastic, it will never look good on you.” Almost every Mymarini product is produced in Europe to ensure a low CO2 footprint, and fair pay and good working conditions are the norm. Every element of the production chain has been considered in terms of reducing impact on the environment, from an innovative wastewater treatment plant to the use of regenerated nylon made from old fishing nets. Burk created Mymarini for anyone who cares about the planet, sports, water, good design and trying “to pass on a world to our children which is a little bit better.” As far as brand visions go, this is one we can get on board with. mymarini.com

VICTORIA PENDLETON CBE The Olympic track cyclist, Commonwealth champion and all-round British sporting legend on fitness, friends and food How would you describe yourself in three words? Fearless, adventurous, nutter. How did you get into fitness? I’ve always loved sport. I come from a really sporty family and my brother and I were always doing physical things and climbing trees. I think having a twin brother you always have something to compete against. My attitude was always anything he can do I can do better. What’s your favourite way to stay active? I don’t feel like I’ve got a favourite; it’s like choosing between your children. I love trying new sports and learning something new – I’m always trying to mix it up and keep it different. I think if your body isn’t continually pushed it stops adapting, so you have to keep the repertoire constantly evolving. I do love training in the gym using free weights. You really have to focus on what you’re doing and your movements, and they use all of your muscles, which I find super satisfying. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? Start where you are, not where you want to be. What advice would you give to women looking to succeed in a new challenge? Women have to encourage one another; we have to be our biggest supporters. There’s no point in trying to stand in someone’s way or criticise, we need to get behind and give each other a leg up. Women are naturally nurturing and when you start helping each other it’s such a powerful thing. We are incredibly powerful and can get some serious stuff done. Don’t fear failing and just enjoy it for the experience it’s going to give you. What inspires you to succeed? If someone tells me I can’t do something, it just inspires me to prove them wrong. I was told when I was 16 I didn’t have the mentality to be a champion, which made me more determined and tenacious.

What is your friendship with Sophie like? We’re like sisters, cut from the same cloth. We have such a similar approach to life and we couldn’t be more opposite in many ways, but love the same things. I love that she’s a champion for women, she encourages others to be better and more fulfilled versions of themselves. How have these experiences bonded you? Sharing an adventurous experience is the ultimate human bond. I want to be part of a tribe, Sophie and I, we’re a little wolfpack. When you are physically and emotionally experiencing something, which sport gives you the opportunity to do, the sense of bonding and closeness is really important. What’s your ultimate getaway? With Sophie, doing a retreat in the jungle with equally cool women who like to be adventurous and take on new things. What’s next on your bucket list? To get my motorcycle license and do some off-roading. I want to get a bike and be more adventurous. Do you prefer coffee or tea? Coffee with oat milk. Do you prefer green juice or cocktails? Green juice followed by a cocktail. What’s your ideal death row dinner? Starter: I love a really good hummus with loads of crudités. Main course: I would actually have some kind of Thali, a proper Indian meal with loads of curries, dahl, vegetable curry and roti. Dessert: I just really enjoy a vegan chocolate chip almond butter cookie. I’ve been making these recently and when they’re warm out of the oven they’re amazing.




SOPHIE EVERARD The surfer, snowboarder and founder of Mad to Live Retreats talks sports, sisterhood and Sweaty Betty How would you describe yourself in three words? Adventurous, fiery, empowering. Do you have a life mantra? I named my business after my mantra and it’s also tattooed on me: Mad to Live. It epitomises how I like to approach life; it’s having a fearlessness and going after what’s true to you. It’s about pursuing what sets you on fire; it’s incredibly empowering. I like to try and have that energy with everything I do. What is Mad To Live all about? Mad to Live is all about women coming together, supporting each other to overcome their fears and feel amazing. My dream for Mad to Live was to provide an incredible adventure in a completely supportive setting. I run all-female retreats in places around the world I have lived myself and have a close connection to. I want guests to have a true local’s taste and experience. It’s about exploring the best adventures and culture in the area, from surfing to horse riding to mountain biking, trail riding and climbing. Why are Mad to Live retreats for women only? My decision to make my retreats just for women came from my personal experience when I was younger. I found that when women are united and in a positive zone of strength and encouragement, this can foster a better learning environment for sports and the ability to forge epic female friendships. I had always travelled on my own, leaving home as a teenager to live in the Alps and surfing around the world. When I went to some female-only retreats as a younger woman myself, my surfing and the other sports I pursued not just progressed massively, but I was given so many rewarding and powerful life experiences which taught me to live boldly. How did you meet Victoria? Victoria and I met in 2011. She was an athlete for a brand I used to work for, and as soon as we met I immediately thought this is a kindred spirit, someone on my wave length. We have so much in common, I’m a bit of a nerd and I loved meeting someone with the same crazy interests as me. To have a friend who you can go through the highs and lows of life with, it’s just magic. Our friendship was fused by adventures, which took on more poignant meanings as we took on life’s adventures itself. Victoria is so kind, strong and generous.

What does female friendship mean to you? I am, more than ever, intensely convinced of the utterly limitless possibilities of what can be achieved when women are supporting each other. It’s all about those friendships that can lift you higher than the sky, higher than you ever thought possible. How did you get into fitness? I grew up in Greece and since I can remember I’ve been interested in sports and the outdoors. I was that kid running around chasing tortoises up the mountains and swimming in the ocean. What’s your favourite way of staying active? I love workouts that leave me feeling totally energised and like I’ve done something for my body and mind. This can be playing outdoors and connecting with the ocean or going to the gym and listening to my favourite rock playlist. I love feeling strong and powerful, so strength training is my goto. The way I’ve managed to progress through other sports is having a great foundation of strength. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? Always follow your gut instinct when making decisions for yourself. When I’ve listened to my gut, it’s been like a guiding light that’s lead to the most fulfilling moments of my life. What’s your death row dinner? I love the flavours of the Med, so I’d start with a huge seafood platter with buttery brown bread followed by my Mum’s roast chicken, which is insane. Then I’m a huge chocoholic, so I’d finish with a Portuguese chocolate mousse. What is your favourite piece from the Sweaty Betty shoot? I’m obsessed with the new Garudasana pants as they feel buttery soft and make my bum look super good. I also love the swimwear; it makes me feel very feminine, sexy and strong and Bond girly. n a world of internet shopping, decision fatigue and impulsive buys, Vancouver-born Lululemon has been one of the few high street stores to turn their bricks-and-mortar stores into a strength. Taking inspiration from Nike’s New York store, which has a half-size basketball court for customers to test their new sneakers, and Adidas’ stadium concept in London, Lululemon invites its shoppers to experience its high

quality sportswear in real time, with free exercise sessions and workouts on site. This July, the activewear pioneer opened up shop in Canary Wharf, its 10th store in London. Throughout the brand’s first month, it held free yoga classes – including one at the Crossrail Place Roof Garden – welcoming locals and commuters, and enhancing a spirit of community in Jubilee Place. The classes will continue on a weekly basis in a studio

The Star Wars actor and new face of Jo Malone London Gent talks fame, being on set and life in London What do you look for in a script? I look for a number of things, but for me the main thing is the character arc. I don’t want my character to begin and end the movie the same. I want a change, something different. Something that happens with the character, that means you have to go on an interesting journey with him. What’s your favourite part of being on set? My favourite about being on set is collaborating with other people. I’ve always watched films and never had clarity in my younger days on how the magic starts and is created. So to be part of that and witness it is the biggest rush. What is something you didn’t expect about being famous? One thing I didn’t expect about being famous is the fact that some things don’t change. Sometimes you have to wait in the queue like everyone else and that’s fine. I mean, I guess I got told so many things about being famous I thought that everything was going to change for me. But I still go shopping in my PJs. Nothing’s really changed. What’s your favourite Jo Malone London scent? Bronze Wood & Leather Cologne Intense is a solid favourite. I like to wear it on a day-to-day basis. It doesn’t attract too much attention, but at the same time it gets people looking and smelling. I also like a bit of oud; oud is a lovely smell. What do you miss most about England when you’re not here? Sometimes I miss the weather, because I want to put on a jacket. And not always be surrounded by blue skies and sun. I miss the moody faces, I can’t lie; there’s something about reality and honesty that I like. I just miss London. I miss home. What’s the first thing you do when you get back to London? The first thing I do is take a drive. I go back around south London , then drive around Crystal Palace, all the way around Dulwich, go down to Brixton. How difficult is it to escape the frantic pace of your Grand Prix lifestyle? I don’t mind being in the limelight on a grand prix weekend but not the rest of the time. We’ve lived in this place for about four years and it’s become the perfect home to relax in and get away from it all. My son, Monty, loves to ride his toy tractor around the place and in the house. Restoring the farm has been my hobby – the way I put racing out of my mind. The main house is finished but now the barns are being converted. We’re currently putting the finishing touches to an indoor swimming pool.

C

hristian Horner is the brains behind Aston Martin Red Bull Racing. He has guided the Formula One team to four Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships in a row, and received an OBE for services to motorsport in 2013. One of the most highly respected figures in F1, Horner became the sport’s youngest team principal when he joined newly-formed Red Bull Racing in 2005. Together with chief technical officer, Adrian Newey, the pair have amassed 59 victories and finished third in the 2018 Constructors’ Championship. Despite being robbed of a podium finish at this year’s Monaco Grand Prix, Red Bull’s Honda-powered car is now starting to show serious promise. Driver Max Verstappen is regarded as one of the hottest talents on the grid, although the team’s new engine is yet to match those of Mercedes or Ferrari. Team mate Pierre Gasly is unlikely to beat Verstappen for pace but is catching up fast. The French driver was brought into the team by Horner, following the shock departure of Daniel Ricciardo to Renault at the end of the 2018 season. Married to Spice Girls singer Geri Halliwell, Horner lives in a sprawling farmhouse not far from Banbury. The Oxfordshire mansion includes a boating lake, a tennis court and a menagerie of animals. The 45-year-old is stepfather to Halliwell’s daughter, Bluebell Madonna, 13, and the couple have a two-year-old son together, named Montague.

How did you catch the automotive bug? My grandfather was head of purchasing at the Standard Motor Company in Coventry and then set up his own agency, supplying parts. Dad joined him and they had a very successful business. I went to school in Leamington Spa and we lived in Bishop’s Itchington, not far from Gaydon. There were always lots of interesting cars on the driveway. Dad had a Reliant Scimitar, a Triumph Stag and a Jaguar XJS. My two brothers and I were always urging him to go faster. Mum drove a Triumph Herald and later, an Alpine sports car. When did your own driving career start? When I was 11, my parents looked at a new house and there was a go-kart in the garage. The people selling the house promised they would leave it but didn’t. After we moved in, I plagued my mother and we found a go-kart for sale in the local paper for £60. It was an ancient racing kart with slick tyres and had no traction on our slippery fields, so Dad took me to an old airfield and from that moment on I was hooked. All I wanted to be was a racing driver. When did you learn to drive on the road? At midnight on my 17th birthday, Mum and I were at the bottom of the driveway waiting to go out on the road with L-plates. I had an old Volkswagen Beetle with spoilers and a side exhaust – it looked seriously cool. That evening, I drove the family out to my birthday dinner and on the way home, they all fell asleep in the car. I passed my test two weeks later. You won a Formula Renault scholarship in 1991, had a successful career in British Formula Two and Formula 3000, and you had your own team – Arden. Why didn’t you make the step up to F1 as a driver? I remember the moment vividly. I was pre-season racing at Estoril in Portugal. There is a very fast right hander coming out of the pits and Juan Montoya shot past me. The barrier is very close at that point and if you come off it’s a big accident. I watched the rim of his wheel trying to pop out the rear tyre under the pressure of cornering and I knew I couldn’t drive like that. That’s when I decided to concentrate on running my team instead.

You retired from racing at 25, partnered with Prodrive for a season and then joined Red Bull, becoming the youngest team principal at the age of 31. Was this a memorable moment? It was a big moment in my life but also felt like a natural progression. All the principles that served me well building my Formula 3000 team I applied to F1. At the end of the day, people are your biggest asset – the right technicians, engineers and drivers. I was a big Adrian Newey fan and when he left McLaren to join us, people stood up and took notice. If you are going to shoot for the stars, you need somebody like Adrian. Persuading him to sign with us was a major step forward.

How do you feel about being touted as the next Bernie Ecclestone, running F1 in the future? It’s very flattering when people make that connection. At the moment, I very much enjoy the competitive side of my career. I’m really focused on wanting to achieve more with Red Bull and get us back to a winning situation. Nobody has a crystal ball – 10 years down the road I might feel differently. I do have a West Highland Terrier called Bernie, though. Who is the best driver ever? It’s very difficult to gauge people like Juan Manuel Fangio and Jackie Stewart against modern drivers. However, the one who has stood out for me is Ayrton Senna. I met him when I was a young kart racer. I snuck under the fence at Silverstone on a test day and hung about at the back of his garage. He spotted my karting jacket and came over for a chat. He was so enthused about karting, very polite and interested in what I was doing. There was an aura around him – it was a special moment I shall always remember. Do you see Formula E (FE) challenging F1 at any point? Formula E has its place but I don’t think that ultimately it will compete because F1 is escapism in many respects. It is modernday chariot racing. FE will end up with autonomous cars and no need for drivers, if it follows through to a natural conclusion. First and foremost, F1 is the purest entertainment, man and machine at the absolute limit. Christian Horner is team principal of Aston Martin Red Bull Racing, redbullracing.redbull.com

The Red Bull team finished strongly in 2009 and then won the Constructors’ and Drivers’ Championships in 2010 with Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber. How did you celebrate that first of four consecutive victories? Adrian and I both bought an Aston Martin Vantage. It was the first real present I had afforded myself. The V12 is a fantastic car to drive: loads of power and it also sounds amazing. For my 40th birthday, I took delivery of an Aston Martin DB5, another iconic motor. I also own an AC Cobra and two Minis that originally belonged to Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney. Geri gave me a Willys jeep for my birthday, and I tracked down her old MGB Roadster for her present. She bought the MG with her first pay cheque from the Spice Girls. How hard was it losing Daniel Ricciardo at the end of last season? Very, very difficult. If I take my Red Bull hat off, he is a friend. He was the perfect fit for Red Bull and I didn’t understand his decision-making to move to Renault. He grew up with Red Bull and had no idea what life would be like outside of that world. I think he was quite surprised when Mercedes and Ferrari didn’t come calling, then Renault made him a significant offer. His decision demonstrated how keen he was to try something else and take a risk. It will be interesting to see what he thinks of that decision at the end of the season. Give us your thoughts on Lewis Hamilton: friend or foe? Lewis is an enigma. A wonderful, gifted driver. He’s a total natural and his achievements in the sport are phenomenal. He’s very much a Marmite character – people love him, or loathe him. I have huge respect for what he has done, the talent he has and what he has achieved. He has done it in his own way with the lifestyle he leads. He turns up at a Grand Prix and delivers, nobody can question that. He is a true sporting great. LU X U R Y L ON D ON .C O.U K

Silvia Ziranek Until Friday 16 August Lobby, One Canada Square Free The work of Silvia Ziranek, one of Britain’s foremost Performance Artists, is normally seen in one-off events. Without recourse to a performance, this exhibition documents her work through the badges, texts and accessories related to 29 of her performances and events between 1986 and 2019, together with an audio recording of her reading from her abbreviated performance texts, made especially for the exhibition. The badges that accompanied each of her performances are the main focus of the exhibition, shown 50 times their normal ‘button’ size, in a colourful installation that carries messages, which are variously descriptive, mysterious, wry or cryptic, whilst intended to inform or intrigue. Written entirely in capital letters, a convention always used by the artist, they are a form of poetry and wordplay that becomes clear when listening to the artist’s intonation and delivery in the recordings. O

ne day on safari is not like another. The wonders of the natural world are not always lying in photographic wait, poised in anticipation of your arrival. They are busy surviving: stalking prey, hiding from predators, dozing beneath sparse foliage, bathing, bonding. The presence of humans might be immaterial or, indeed, a hindrance to them. However you encounter the riches of these habitats – no more so than in Kenya, the king of safaris, out of popularity for a time but now reasserting its force – the ability to witness their daily lives is quite remarkable. The thrill of expecting the unexpected awaits each day, driving out in the early morning and late afternoon hours. Just as one day is not like another, nor is one safari destination quite like another. The Safari Collection, a company founded by a pair of fourthgeneration Kenyans, offers just that: a collection of four dazzlingly varied safari destinations, in absolute luxury and degrees of Kenyan wilderness. The most refined, and arguably most restrained, is the photogenic Giraffe Manor; a 1930s property on the edge of Nairobi National Park, just south of the city. Its private land is home to a herd of Rothschild’s giraffe, who guests of just 12 rooms may meet over a dawn breakfast or afternoon tea. A childlike excitement is in the air as bleary travellers edge in awe towards the manor house windows – or balconies, for a truly premium experience – to feed the giraffe, warthogs scurrying between spindly legs. Open the front door, and a lofty visitor might be waiting. Dining on pancakes and dishes fit for an aristocrat, you may be joined by birds swooping through windows, and a long


powerful neck craning in for a bite. And while the environment is controlled, there are reminders that this is far from a zoo. The giraffes’ human custodians look on in delight as in the distance a newborn, hours old, meets the rest of the herd for the first time, protected on still wobbling legs by its mother. A short flight north, skimming low in a tiny plane over green fields and rolling hills, Solio Lodge lies in a valley between Mount Kenya and the Aberdare mountains. Its five stone cottages are the sole place to stay within a 45,000acre private game reserve devoted to breeding rhino. Nearly half of this land is a conservancy: meaning that the chances of seeing other travellers are minimal, and that guides know exactly who – or what – is coming in and out (including the occasional rogue elephant, trampling the conservancy’s border fences that cross a former migration path). This higher altitude spot is a haven for both the critically endangered black and near threatened white rhino. The opportunity to jump out of a jeep and stand with these at-risk animals just beyond is spectacular. Solio’s charms are indeed many, not least the floor-to-ceiling glass walls that run along each cottage, presenting views of the grassland beyond from bed, bathroom and lounge. Albeit well spread out, since the property is so intimate, manager Ava ensures a personal touch, making sure to catch up with each guest after private game drives, or sharing the recipe to some of the dining room’s Kenyan fare: tender meats, flavoursome soups and hearty salads. When a lone buffalo – docile in herds, aggressive when alone – is known to be roaming nearby, she is on high alert. The importance of a knowledgeable guide, and the difference that they can make (especially when such a buffalo is still at large), is effortlessly showcased here. There are just a handful 98

at Solio, including Maasai Ole, a keen photographer with infectious spirit and a firm hand on where to drive next. His encyclopedic knowledge might result in a friendly quiz over sundowners on how to spot black from white rhino; how to distinguish the many colourful bird species flitting through the trees and the types of monkey scampering below; or even, during a nature walk, how to tell various mammal footprints and dung apart. Solio is also blessed with varied terrain (marshland, vast open landscape, thickets ideal for hiding kills from vultures), which – again, if you know where to look – might lead to a family of young lions playing on a makeshift bridge, or rounding an unsuspecting corner between bushes to meet a pride of 15 resting in the afternoon sun. A tower of 28 giraffe might move slowly across the horizon, while you wander between the stragglers; a baby rhino might scurry to keep up with its parent’s stride; or the sound and smell of lions methodically digging in to a fresh buffalo kill could be the first sign of your next sighting. With the engine switched

off, silently sitting within a few metres or less of these animals is a privilege. Not far from the Tanzanian border, Sala’s Camp is a tented outpost in the Maasai Mara reserve for up to 18 guests, set above a riverbed. Here, the wildlife experience is by contrast less intimate but holds the wonder of the boundless savannah; the exhilaration of the day is, quite often, simply trying to find wildlife in these breathtaking open plains. Private game drives can make all the difference, allowing your guide and spotter – their incredible ability to spot the slightest camouflaged movement is crucial when attempting to track animals in these wilds – to hone in on trying to find the elusive hippo, hyena or herd of elephants that you have not yet seen. Bush breakfasts, campfire sundowners and communal dining – on rather haute cuisine, considering the remote climes – lend this camp its traditional safari air. Maasai warriors are tasked with patrolling the camp and escorting guests in the dark before dawn and in the evening to their tents (luxurious to a tee, and

where elephants and giraffe might graze the side as they pass through under midnight moonlight). As much as wildlife rules any safari, these brief human encounters are perhaps the most illuminating. Robert, for instance, tells of Maasai life and traditions in hushed tones before stopping dead in his tracks, spear ready in hand (no guns allowed, in these parts). It is the arguably imperceptible sound of what transpires to be a buffalo further ahead. A day on safari highlights the cruelty and beauty of nature in equal measure. A lioness will shelter a couple of newly born cubs from foe, venturing from a den only to hunt food for them. The next day, the sound of her grief-stricken howls can fill the air as an outcast male, ferocious towards any perceived rival (however young), has ransacked her home. Not far away, a hippo wallows in mud and a leopard sleeps sprawled over a branch in the afternoon sun. No two days on safari are quite like another.

ne bright, sunny day in the 1960s, Greek businessman Anastasios Andreadis was sailing around the headland off the northern coast of Greece. Gazing across the Aegean Sea towards Halkidiki, he saw an area of scrubland on the Kassandra peninsula called Sani. Wild, uninhabited and riddled with malaria-carrying mosquitos, it hardly looked inviting, but Andreadis had an inexplicable feeling about the area and a vision of it one day transformed into a destination where holidaymakers could enjoy its pristine beaches, turquoise waters and abundance of nature. More than half a century later, Andreadis’s vision has more than been realised and this once barren area is now Halkidiki’s premier luxury resort. A haven for parents who want to keep their children happy but still long for the same kind of holidays they enjoyed pre-kids, Sani Resort combines lavish surroundings, Michelin-starred restaurants, wellness programmes and adult-only areas with dedicated kids’ zones, Ofsted-standard childcare and an impressive activity programme. There’s also a Chelsea FC Foundation football academy and the new Rafa Nadal Tennis Centre, both of which offer professional coaching to little sports fans. There is a crèche and kids’ clubs for children aged four months to teens and the resort also operates a “Babewatch” service on the beach, where staff entertain the kids while parents relax on comfy sun loungers and perhaps even manage to enjoy a book. This isn’t a place where frazzled parents battle for sunbeds while trying to calm their tired toddlers. The overwhelming atmosphere at Sani is one of space, calm and serenity, where the adults look truly rested and the kids are having a ball. The resort consists of a group of five luxury award-winning hotels set within a 1,000 acre ecological reserve, with its own private 7km long beach and bustling marina.

Each hotel has its own unique identity to appeal whether you’re looking for a chilled-out family atmosphere or a more chic, grown-up vibe. A shuttle bus ferries guests between properties, where they are free to use most facilities. I stayed at the original and oldest property, Club Sani, which has 253 bungalow-style rooms and suites, some with private plunge pools, stretching uphill and facing the sea. As well as its safe, childfriendly beaches, there are two swimming pools, tennis, volleyball and basketball courts, a gym, spa and several restaurants. Sani Beach is another favourite with families. Set in beautifully landscaped gardens it offers five-star luxury with 392 stylish rooms, a heated infinity pool, spa and fabulous ocean front bar with the added bonus of a children’s splash pool, baby swimming lessons and adventure playground. Those who prefer to be close to the Sani Marina, with its berths for yachts, waterside restaurants and designer shops, including Melissa Odabash and Greece’s first Missoni store, might opt to stay at the elegant Porto Sani, while the sophisticated 57-room Sani Asturias offers a more intimate experience, with its luxury suites, Michelin-starred executive chefs and an exclusive beach. The newest addition to the resort is Sani Dunes, built in 2017, which also has a grown-up, contemporary feel, but has plenty for the kids too, including beach parties, an open air theatre and the largest heated swimming pool in Greece. Food is a highlight at Sani and there are 23 restaurants across the site, serving top-notch cuisine from Mediterranean to Middle Eastern, with each offering stunning sea views and impeccable service. For casual dining I particularly loved Ouzerie, a traditional Greek taverna overlooking the sea at Sani Club. Many of the restaurants are included in the “dine around” programme, which allows half and full-board guests to choose from set menus around the resort, or offset their meal allowances against à la carte dishes. For the health-conscious, there’s a special Sani wellbeing menu available, while leading children’s cookbook author Annabel Karmel designs the kids’ menus. While the pools and beaches provide ample relaxation space, there are plenty of activities for the more energetic, including beach volleyball, basketball, waterskiing, sailing and biking academies, paddleboard yoga and a PADI dive centre. Taking advantage of the stunning natural surroundings there are forest walks and bird watching, while the wellness programme includes yoga, pilates and guided jogging tours. For those who want an extra level of luxury, the Sani Suite Collection is a new concierge service for guests staying in the resort’s best suites and rooms and offers VIP services, childcare and private trips as well as extras such as upgraded room amenities and in-room dining and an exclusive beach area. More than 50 years on from that sunny day when Andreadis and his business partners Leonidas F Zisiadis and Leonidas K Zisiadis sailed around that same headland, the resort continues to grow in the hands of their children, who now run the family business.
