E D I TO R’ S L ET T E R

T HIS MONTH THE T EAM HAS B EEN . . .

I

’m in love. It started as a whimsical flirtation but developed into a truly, madly deep obsession. For more than a year I’d alight the DLR at Canary Wharf and pass by the most impressive of specimens. It began with just a wanton glance – inwardly I fully recognised that the subject of my affection was surely out of my league – but my longing developed and the temptation was too great a burden. This weekend we spent the whole weekend together – just me and the beloved Tesla who’d managed to escape its Canada Square showroom for a wild 48-hours on the open road – albeit starting our journey in the Blackwall Tunnel. The test drive of the shiny Model S was ludicrous – quite literally. A simple press of the car’s supercharge ludicrous button takes you from 0-60 in under three seconds and feels like you’re travelling at Warp Factor 10 on the world’s biggest rollercoaster. We parted company 48-hours later and I almost cried at having to leave behind my new parking assisting, Spotify pumping, pollution protecting piece of motoring science. Thankfully putting together this issue was equally exhilarating. From page 61 our writers discover the new releases on four wheels from the Geneva Motor Show and writer Josh Sims interviews Aston Martin’s ambitious CEO. From the streets of London we headed to New York’s where photographer Turi Løvik Kirknes used the metropolis as a backdrop to showcase the latest spring/ summer fashion collections. Dua Lipa also reveals from page 20 how she has broken all the rules to become a billionhit pop sensation. It’s been a journey – hold tight for a very fast ride.

What SS19 trend will you be championing this season? I loved seeing oversized bows at the fashion shows, and I’m looking forward to incorporating them into my summer wardrobe this year. What are you looking forward to in April? I can’t wait for longer days and planning my next location shoot in Montenegro.

What is your dream car? I would love an original mint condition 1970 Ford Bronco please – it’s too cool for words. What are you looking forward to in April? Dealing with the fall out from the Easter half term break (nb. I’m being sarcastic).

A

t 23, singer-songwriter Dua Lipa has already achieved the kind of recognition that some musicians strive to gain over a lifetime. She made YouTube history as the youngest female artist to hit one billion views for a music video and was the most-streamed female artist in the UK in 2018. Her debut self-titled album was released in 2017 to critical acclaim and reached platinum status in just over a year. With a string of infectious, female-focused anthems – including the 2018 single New Rules, which tied with Edwin McCain’s I’ll Be as the longest charting pop song ever – a record-breaking number of Brit Award nominations, celebrity duets and covers for GQ, Elle and V magazine. And the awards keep coming: she won two Grammys this year for Best New Artist and Best Dance Recording with Silk City for their hit Electricity. This is clearly an artist at the top of her game. Lipa’s work ethic, down-to-earth nature and message of empowerment has made her a role model for girls and young women, and her background is just as inspiring. Her parents moved to the UK from Kosovo in 1990 after war broke out, and Lipa was born in Westminster in 1995. She lived in London until she was 11, when her father’s job took them back to the Kosovan capital of Pristina. Surrounded by an unfamiliar language and culture, she struggled to fit in but finally found a place she belonged in the city’s hip-hop scene. Determined to pursue a singing career in London, Lipa persuaded her parents to let her move back to the UK capital on her own when she was 15, where she stayed with a family friend and attended the prestigious Sylvia Young Theatre School – an institution which counts Rita Ora and the late Amy Winehouse as alumnae. Lipa might not have looked back since in terms of her burgeoning career, but her Kosovan roots are an integral part of her identity. Together with her father, she established the Sunny Hill charitable foundation for citizens of Kosovo and hosts a music festival there. Beyond her music, Lipa’s edgy fashion sense and seductive beauty have made her a style icon. Having worked as a model in her teens, she is keen to maintain a parallel career in fashion and is the new brand ambassador for Pepe Jeans. Lipa is fronting the prestigious denim brand’s SS19 campaign, shot by renowned British photographer David Sims. With her second album due for release this year and more

exciting projects in the works, we caught up with the pop sensation to find out more about her family, fashion, and London life. Through your music, you project a real sense of independence and self-confidence. Would you say you are a confident person? Getting up and performing my songs, I do feel very confident. But a lot of the songs come from a place that lacks that. Something I always wanted was a way to portray confidence in my music – trying to make myself feel better in certain situations. Like the time after someone didn’t think I was good enough for him, and I wrote Hotter Than Hell, which made it seem like he couldn’t get enough of me. I guess that makes me feel empowered. What is the main inspiration for your songs? My life. My songs are all very personal and autobiographical. I write about things that happened to me, about things I know. Of my weaknesses. In fact, every time I feel weak, I try to write something that makes me feel stronger. Obviously, given that what I describe are situations and feelings that we all feel, I hope that others can recognise many of these same emotions.

“Every time I feel weak, I try to write something that makes me feel stronger”

22

Why is fashion so important to you? I love fashion and dressing up. It’s always so much fun and I believe fashion, as well as many other things, is an outlet for me to express myself. I love mixing and matching different things and trying to find a few statement pieces that work. How has your father’s career as a musician shaped your own approach to the music industry? My father has always given me good advice. He taught me to have very clear goals and not become distracted from pursuing your dream. He told me not to worry about having a Plan B because that can be a distraction and make you lose sight of what you really want to achieve. If you’re not thinking about a back-up plan, then you’re forced to concentrate on your true goal. I don’t know if that works for everyone, but it’s certainly worked for me. Did your father encourage you to be a musician? Seeing him perform on stage with his band made me realise that music was what I wanted to do with my life. He was always encouraging me. One of the greatest gifts he gave me was the advice that you need to work very hard if you want to bring yourself luck. That phrase has always resonated with me.

You have to earn your luck. I believe that if you’re going to succeed you need to be very determined, don’t let yourself get discouraged, and above all, never give up. Both my parents are very supportive. They also reminded me to never lose sight of who I am simply to please other people. What music did you listen to when you were growing up? My father was always listening to music in the house – David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Sting, Radiohead. Then I started listening to really strong female artists, like Nelly Furtado and Pink. I knew all of Pink’s songs by heart and I would sing them in the house. At the start of your career, you posted covers of your favourite songs on YouTube. What part does social media play for you as an artist? I wanted to become an artist who would one day be able to perform in front of audiences in every part of the world. Since I had no idea how I could go about that or who I could find to help me accomplish that, I decided to use social media to my advantage: Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and then YouTube. That way, every time I met someone in the music industry I could talk to them about my covers that people could see and listen to. Social media is also the best way for me to reach out to my fans and build a connection to them. What were your goals when you returned to London at 15 – and was it hard to leave your parents? I told myself that I would at least give myself a few years to get my music career off the ground. Music was all I wanted to do with my life and I thought that if I worked hard at it, eventually things would work out. I never really felt alone. At the time I was constantly in touch with my parents and spoke to them on the phone at least once a day. My parents also came to London very often to visit me. I consider myself very lucky to have enjoyed that kind of close relationship with them. What was it like living alone in London at that age? I loved the freedom I had and the fact that I could invite my friends home whenever I wanted to and without any restrictions on how late they could stay. But I hated having to take care of myself, preparing all my meals, doing my laundry and all those things because I didn’t have anyone else to do that for me. What did you learn from the experience? It made me become much more independent and helped me understand that if I wanted to make my dreams come true I had to get out of my shell and fight. 24

hilst most of the bespoke frames we make are perfectly fitted versions of my existing collection, sometimes I do get asked to make frames out of interesting materials. I’m currently making one out of someone’s old hockey stick and for Heston Blumenthal, I created frames out of salmon skin leather. At the moment I’m experimenting with colour changing frames made out of recycled acetate. They go from a light peach colour to a lovely purple when in sunlight. The average person only spends around seven minutes choosing a frame and wears the wrong prescription and style. So we start with the best clinical eye test possible that includes testing your night vision. We have special Bespoke ZEISS lenses to deal with this and a whole host of other challenges we can fix. There is a reason most people hate their glasses but you can love your glasses if they are a treasured accessory. You wear them day in, day out for years, so your decision needs to be carefully considered. A good fitting pair of glasses should not fall off your face or leave marks on the bridge of your nose. They should balance your features, creating symmetry and symmetry is beauty. We help our customers pick a starting point; a frame

which we work from in order to make it bespoke. We consider the person’s character, style, profession and clinical needs. Eyewear defines you. It frames your face and of course your eyes, so what you wear here will be a significant influence of how people perceive you and interact with you. I think it is also important to have at least one other pair. For example, taking your “work glasses” off and switching to a more relaxed style will help you psychologically get into that frame of mind. We change everything else, like our clothes and shoes, but we don’t seem to change our glasses. At my home, we have a whole wardrobe for the family’s glasses collection, with different pairs for different occasions. People always think that bespoke is too costly. We charge an extra £300 to make a frame bespoke. But it’s not just the design and fit you must consider. I only use premium acetate and titanium in my frames. This means that a Tom Davies frame will still look great in three or four years, whilst a cheaper frame will be warped and dull. For something which is worn every day for years and which helps you see and be seen, I have never considered Tom Davies frames as a luxury but actually quite good value for money.”

STICKS ‘N’ SUSHI WORDS SUNNA NASEER

W

hen you think of a sushi restaurant, you probably think of raw fish. But Sticks ‘n’ Sushi isn’t limited to seafood, let alone the raw variety. Founded by two brothers inspired by their mixed heritage, the restaurant beautifully merges both Nordic and Japanese cuisine; the result of which is a vast and varied menu full of tantalising plates in unexpected flavour-pairings. Serving high-quality, fresh sushi and a selection of grilled yakitori (skewered) sticks in chicken, pork, beef and vegetables, Sticks ‘n’ Sushi welcomes diners of all tastes. The latest ‘green kitchen’ menu comes packed full of vegetarian dishes made from carefully picked market vegetables. Inside, the restaurant’s sleek and dark interiors nod to its Scandi roots. The atmosphere is relaxed as we sit back in our comfortable lounge chairs under the softly lit, low-hanging lights. With communal seating areas and friendly staff members, there’s a very welcoming and social atmosphere. Faced with the photo-album style menu and gazing around at other diners’ dishes, I found it very difficult to choose. Luckily, our waiter was on-hand to share his personal recommendations. His enthusiasm swayed me and I decided to put his choices to the test. First up were three small plates including delicate slices of Japanese sea bass with chives, minty shiso and truffle oil; scallops inside a crispy nest, topped with miso aïoli and trout roe; and an innovative fried cauliflower dish served with a black truffle goma. Scallops are a difficult thing to master, but here they are buttery soft and melt in the mouth. Each dish is full of subtle flavours and complementary textures. For sushi, a mini Maki Maki platter allowed us to sample four varieties of rolls. From barbecue tuna and seared salmon to tempura shrimp with avocado and ceviche scallops, every piece was beautifully fresh and it was clear why Sticks ‘n’ Sushi is considered a market leader in Japanese cuisine. If you’re a lover of trying new food, this restaurant is heaven. The majority of the dishes are so light to eat that you can try several plates. From starters and salads to sashimi, nigiri, maki and sticks, you certainly aren’t short of choice. To accompany the sushi, we had the devilish ‘robust’ platter: six sticks alongside rice and broccoli with spicy goma. As well as the usual grilled meats such as teriyaki chicken and beef with miso herb butter, there is panko duck breast with wasabi ceasar dip and chicken and squid sausage. As the menu explains, “in Japan, a big dessert is not a great dessert. Instead, they take pride in serving a variety of several petite ones” – and who were we to say no? A matcha dark chocolate pot and a dark chocolate caramel fondant were the perfect way to finish such an exquisite meal. THE LONG RUN Ahead of the London Marathon in April, Pure Sports Medicine’s strength and conditioning coach James Phillips (@jamesphillipssc) and specialist pysiotherapist Michael Harrop (@physioharrop) share their top training tips Slowly increase your long run distance by no more than 10 per cent while training. Include some stretching and foam rolling after runs to help recovery, and be sure to seek advice on the best techniques to use. Try not to catch up on any runs you might miss – this will lead to training volume spikes and risk injury. In the lead up to the race, relax and try to get some decent sleep – and not just the night before. Eat a normal breakfast, which you would regularly have, and make sure you stick to your race strategy. Pure Sports Medicine, Cabot Place

What makes a shoe ideal for running long distances? Comfort, fit and protection are three key preferences if you want to win the long run. This often means plenty of padding around the ankles and underfoot. You also want to have plenty of space in the toe area; a quick rule is that you need roughly a thumbnails width between your longest toe and the end of the shoe. This ensures you have space for your feet to expand when they warm up whilst running. What are some of the most common mistakes people make when choosing trainers for running? Arguably the most common mistake is buying on looks. Make function the priority. Some runners also don’t seek enough advice. There are so many factors to consider getting the right running shoe. Are your feet narrow/wide? What balance of comfort/responsiveness do you need? These are just some things you need to consider. The staff at ASICS are well equipped to help you with these questions. Is it advisable to wear different shoes for running outside and for running on a treadmill? It depends on what you are doing on the treadmill. Often people will find that they will run faster for shorter periods on a treadmill than they would outdoors. If that’s the case, you may want to consider a lighter weight shoe over a more cushioned shoe. An ASICS DynaFlyte over a Nimbus for example. However, if you are doing the same on a treadmill as you would outside, I don’t see any issue with using the same pair of shoes for both. The benefit of using a treadmill, is that you may get a few more miles out of your shoes, as you run in a consistent environment.

ASICS NEW ENERGY SAVING SHOES As part of their ambition to support runners to win the long run, ASICS have released a highly innovative new design. METARIDE™ was developed by a team of scientists and designers. The new running shoes are scientifically proven to offer a total reduction of energy loss at the ankle joint by almost one fifth. The difference could be seismic for long canarywharf.com

distance runners who want to achieve their full potential. The key to the new design is its revolutionary GUIDESOLE™ technology; a precision-shaped curved sole that works by shifting the body weight forward in order to propel runners in an effortless forward motion. WHIPPED INTO SHAPE NOW OPEN IN CROSSRAIL PLACE, BARRY’S BOOTCAMP CO-OWNER SANDY MACASKILL (LEFT), SHARES WHY THEY ARE THE BEST IN THE BUSINESS What led you to launch Barry’s Bootcamp? Simple - my brother. He took me to a class in the States and I was hooked after pretty much the first minute. We’ve played sports and worked out in different ways our whole lives, but there was literally nothing like Barry’s. It was exactly what we wanted to do - run and lift weights but in an amazing atmosphere. Now we work together running it here in London. For those who haven’t tried it yet, what can you expect from a Barry’s Bootcamp workout? Beneath the surface, it’s about switching your head off and letting someone else (your trainer) think for you for a change. You give us your effort, and you’ll leave with amazing results and a smile on your face. The classes are high intensity, how often do you recommend training at Barry's per week? As for how many to do, the programme was specifically designed for you to take five classes a week. The separate muscle group breakdown is there so you can recover effectively. Even the treadmills were chosen with this in mind – Woodway Treadmills are super cushioned so they’re very kind on your joints. LU X U R Y L ON D ON .C O.U K

Are the instructors new or will they be familiar faces from other Barry's sites? The classes are all taught by our existing instructors. We have an incredible team, with five years of experience here in London and 20 years of brand knowhow. No one teaches a Barry’s class until they have been through our extensive training programme and are ready to hit the ground at max speed. That’s why I feel so confident saying we’re the best in the business.

“Barry’s is for everyone who is open minded about training” I’m not a runner, is Barry’s for me? Barry’s is for everyone who is open minded about training. Come and join the class, just do the best you can. Our instructors are specialists in this workout and can help non-runners become runners. Can't bring yourself to hit the treads? Fine, just do double floor and skip the running entirely. Barry’s Bootcamp, Crossrail Place, barrysbootcamp.com

PICK YOUR WORKOUT ORIGINAL RUN + LIFT Original classes combine 25 minutes of cardiovascular work on the treadmill with 25 minutes of strength training on the floor. DOUBLE FLOOR NO RUNNING Double Floor classes are strength focused, tread-free workouts. Don’t worry. Even without the treadmill, you’ll be sore for days. 35

JAGUAR LAND ROVER UNVEILS NEW RANGE ROVER SPORT HST

A new hybrid powertrain increases speed and efficiency Jaguar Land Rover’s new special edition Range Rover Sport HST has launched with an all-new 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder mild-hybrid engine, which generates 394bhp and 550Nm of torque. The engine is assisted by an electricallydriven compressor via a 48V mild-hybrid system, meaning it can reach 62mph from standing in just 6.2 seconds and has a top speed of 140mph. Jaguar Land Rover claims the mildhybrid system produces economy figures of 30.5mpg and emissions ratings of 213g/ km of CO2. The system can also recover energy using the regenerative braking and store it in the battery for later use. Internal updates include 16-way electrically adjustable seats, red brake calipers and satin chrome gear shift paddles. There’s also a choice of five exterior colours: black, white, silver, red and grey. From £81,250, landrover.com

ULTIMATE HYBRID POWERTRAIN FOR ASTON’S ULTIMATE HYPERCAR

The marque confirms performance figures for fully hybrid Valkyrie The heart of the Aston Martin Valkyrie’s powertrain is a clean-sheet Cosworth-built 65° naturally-aspirated 6.5-litre V12 engine. Based on the spine-tingling, ultrahigh-revving F1 engines of the 1990s, but benefitting from two decades of progress in design, material and manufacturing expertise, it sets a new rpm record for a naturally-aspirated, emissions-compliant road car. With a certified peak power output of 1,000bhp at 10,500rpm, it can continue to

a maximum 11,100rpm. Peak torque is 740Nm at 7,000rpm. These outputs are delivered purely by the internal combustion engine, with a further performance boost delivered by the battery hybrid system. The full hybrid system contributes an additional 160bhp of power and a further 280Nm of available torque with the certified max power output of Aston Martin Valkyrie standing at 1,160bhp at 10,500rpm. astonmartin.com

With four overall World Cup titles, two Olympic gold medals, and three World Championship titles, he was given the moniker ‘The Herminator’ for his courageous and risky downhill skiing style. For an adrenaline junkie like him, the Chiron would seem the perfect companion with its 8-litre W16 engine producing 1500 HP, perfect weight distribution and all-wheeldrive, allowing for controlled chaos on ice. “I’ve practically spent my whole life on skis. I never imagined that four wheels could deliver a similar joy in the snow as two skis”, Maier gushed. “Despite the raw power of this car I felt safe and in control from the beginning.” Reassuring words from a man used to going very fast – just watch his run from the 1998 Nagano Olympics. SCANDINAVIA PROVIDES FOR THE ULTIMATE ROAD TRIP

Lamborghini takes on the Norwegian fjords Lamborghini is on a mission to discover the most spectacular roads on Earth. Last year the Volkswagen Group-owned Italian car marque took a fleet of its supercars to Norway to take on a 500km route that included mountains, glaciers and offroad lunar landscapes. The convoy started from the fairy-tale town of Ålesund, a picturesque Art Nouveau village. From there, the Lamborghinis challenged the Trollstigen, commonly known as the

64

road of the Trolls, which winds along 11 hairpin turns that climb between walls of rock and waterfalls. The group continued through Valldal and on to Geirangerfjord, designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The adventure progressed across the Jostedalsbreen, the largest glacier in continental Europe, before arriving at Mount Aksla, overlooking the convoy’s original starting point. This year’s expedition has a lot to live up to. lamborghini.com

MCLAREN DEBUTS ITS FASTEST EVER CREATION

The aerodynamic Speedtail can reach speeds of 250mph McLaren’s hotly-anticipated Speedtail will be the marque’s fastest car when the first examples hit the road in 2020. Nicknamed the Hyper-GT, the model is said to be the brand’s most aerodynamically efficient car to date, and is modelled on the McLaren F1. From standstill, the Speedtail can reach 186mph in just 12.8 seconds – 3.7 seconds faster than P1. Keep on accelerating and it will reach its top speed of 250mph. Its power can be put down to two things: its innovative aerodynamic design and its pioneering 1050PS hybrid powertrain, which features a 4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine assisted by electric motors. Just 106 unique Speedtails will be made and all of the models have already been sold to customers hand-picked for their loyalty to the brand (for a rumoured £2m price tag). cars.mclaren.com

PININFARINA’S MOST POWERFUL ROAD-LEGAL CAR IS ELECTRIC

The brand’s first hypercar was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March Ferrari’s longtime design partner Pininfarina caused a stir at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year when it unveiled the first ever car created under its own brand name – and one of the most powerful road-legal hypercar’s to be produced in Italy. With a seperate motor for each wheel, which can collectively deliver up to 1900bhp and 1696lb ft, the supercar can reach 0-62mph in less than two seconds, and is said to have a top speed of around 217mph. But its not just for its velocity that it has turned heads – the Pininfarina Battista is all-electric. Production will be limited to just 150 models when it launches in 2020 (the same year the brand marks its 90th anniversary), with the USA, UK and Middle East getting 50 models each. AUDI’S FIRST ELECTRIC VEHICLE TAPS INTO THE THRIVING SUV TREND

The marque presents a deliberately conservative zero emissions debut Audi’s first venture into the electric car market has taken more than three years to come to fruition, but the E-Tron’s carefully considered design will no doubt help it stand out from the crowd. Tapping into the thriving off-road market, the SUV sports many of Audi’s traditional design cues – in fact, unlike a number of its competitors, the marque has been deliberately conservative with the E-Tron’s design, to the point where it could be easily confused with one of Audi’s internal combustion SUVs. The details give it away: two flaps on either front wing open to reveal charging points and, inside, there’s a power guage and an electrical range display. Two motors – one at the front and one at the rear – provide four-wheel drive and deliver up to 402bhp and 487lb ft. Its top speed is 124mph. The battery can be charged using a 150kW fast charger, with which Audi claims a charging time of just 30 minutes up to an energy capacity of 80 per cent. The E-Tron is claimed to run 248 miles with a full charge. From £71,490, audi.com

Designed and created in-house at the Garford warehouse, the Ginetta Akula – named after a Russian nuclear-powered attack submarine – has power figures in excess of 600bhp and a torque rating of 700Nm. Its chassis and body panels are made from carbon fibre, giving it a dry weight of 1,150kg and a claimed power-to-weight ratio of 545bhp per tonne. Ginetta plans to create a limited run of just 20 cars by 2020, of which 12 have already been sold. Buyers of the Akula will be sent on a customer experience day, where they’ll be given the opportunity to test the company’s G40 and G58 race cars, under the supervision of a factory driver and with access to a full pit crew. £340,000, ginetta.com 66

eaching 0-60 mph in a mere 2.5 seconds, Model S is the quickest four-door saloon ever built. Superior handling is the result of an extremely low centre of gravity, thanks to the battery pack along the floor pan, centered between the axles. No other production car has a more ideal placement of mass for optimal handling. However, there is so much more to a Tesla car then just the impressive 0-60 times. With outstanding range, exceptionally smooth ride, plenty of legroom and storage space for even the longest journeys and a extensive network of chargers, there really are no compromises.

Model S and Model X 100D brings industry-first NEDC range of 393 miles for Model S and 351 miles for Model X and allows drivers to travel unprecedented distances on a single charge, sustainably. For most Tesla owners, home charging provides plenty of range for daily travel. For long distance travel, the Supercharger network allows Tesla owners to conveniently charge on major routes across the UK stretching from Edinburgh to Exeter and connecting to Europe via Folkestone. Plus, with the ever expanding Destination Charging program, Tesla owners have access to an additional network of chargers at business, travel and leisure destinations. With two motors, one in the front and one in the rear, both Model S and Model X digitally and independently controls torque to the front and rear wheels. The result is unparalleled traction control in all conditions. Unlike conventional all-wheel drive vehicles that sacrifice fuel efficiency for increased traction, Tesla’s Electric All Wheel Drive system increases efficiency. Over-the-air software updates add functionality, enhance performance and improve the driving experience of Tesla vehicles. Similarly, to how you receive updates to your smartphone, Tesla owners receive software updates to their car remotely without visiting a service centre. Additionally, access to Tesla’s mobile app allows owners to monitor charging, put the climate control on or vent the sunroof. Continually improving and evolving, the system and the technology is designed to make our roads safer in the future. Tesla, Cabot Place canarywharf.com

do miss the Japanese food. I really love my food,” says Andy Palmer. But, after 23 years with RenaultNissan – where he was chief planning officer, number two to the CEO and about as high up the pecking order as he was likely to get – Palmer moved back home from Japan towards the end of 2014. And not just home in the sense of the UK – his move back to join Aston Martin meant working at the company’s headquarters at Gaydon, Warwickshire, where he grew up. He’d done it all by then, mind – apprenticed at 16, transmissions chief engineer, marketing officer. “I’d done everything in the car industry except finance,” he says, jokingly referring to his decision to leave Nissan as a kind of mid-life crisis – he’d just turned 50 at the time. “The fact is I’d always wanted to be a CEO. I knew I could settle down with what was a fantastic job, or I could live the dream. And there was a feeling that every bit of my training was leading me to this moment.” His lack of experience in finance didn’t, however, stop him joining Aston Martin with the condition that the company received around $1 billion up front from lead shareholders Investindustrial (of Italy) and Tejara Capital (of Kuwait) – one half of the original consortium, led by 68

Prodrive chairman David Richards, which bought Aston Martin from Ford in 2007. That money wasn’t for himself, of course, but to fulfil the vision his study of the carmaker had inspired. That meant having the equity to give the company fresh momentum to produce four new cars, including a forthcoming SUV. It was something of a gamble, and it’s paying off: last year Aston Martin announced record profits. It was also named not only the world’s fastest growing car brand, but the fastest growing British brand of any kind. “I’m an arrogant b*****d,” laughs Palmer. “Of course I knew that I would be pilloried by some for suggesting the likes of an SUV should be made by a sports car company [unlike the Formula 1-inspired, most-expensive-ever Aston Valkyrie; or Palmer’s promise that there will always be at least one manual transmission car on offer in the Aston Martin line-up]. But that didn’t bother me. Ultimately, surviving is more important than staying true to an ideal that was relevant 50 or 60 years ago.” It’s fighting talk – something one imagines Palmer rather enjoys. Indeed, he’s taking a rather radical stance with the company as part of what it calls its Second Century Plan. With the future of hardcore, petrolhead-teasing sports cars in the balance, he sees Aston Martin

as becoming more of a luxury lifestyle brand: hence its recent move into designing swanky apartments in Miami, furniture, a bicycle, a speedboat, even a submersible, all complementing a broader range of vehicle types. It’s all well beyond the heartlands of the famed Aston Martin DB line that celebrated its 70th anniversary last year – and which, thanks to James Bond, is many a man’s introduction to the marque. “We’ve moved from, as it were, having three Russian dolls in one sector of the car market – GTs essentially – to covering a much broader base. There were so many categories of car for which Aston Martin just didn’t have anything. Now we’re going to be less like Jimmy Choo, a specialist, and more like LVMH – a house of brands,” explains Palmer – with, for example, the revival of the Lagonda marque set to give Bentley a run for its money. “And that all opens up opportunities – for licensing, say. You get to cover a broader lifestyle proposition. There’s a danger in this if you’re all about caps and T-shirts – but we’re getting into products that have genuine crossover for our customers. You can buy a multi-million-pound tender from us now. You can even buy a holiday. I just don’t see Aston Martin as just being a car company anymore. And one of the biggest challenges has been getting our heads around that.” If that sounds a little scary to the motoring purists, Palmer insists that it comes out of both admiration for Aston Martin and out of a desire to see it thrive – not something its history has ever really suggested was possible. As he notes, the company has – for all but two years – never been profitable, in the sense of generating cash, “but I had a strong sense that it should be,” says Palmer. “Study the story of Aston Martin and it’s really one of successive millionaires buying the company, producing one car, and then walking away. I don’t see Aston Martin as ever being anything less than exclusive – I have a deep conviction that the only way you can make money in the car industry is at the very top, or at the very bottom. But the company has never had a discrete range of cars that appealed to different kinds of people, which is what you need.” That, in essence, is Palmer’s hard-headed vision for the Aston Martin of the 21st century – identifying the variety of needs of the high-net-worth individual (or the varieties of high-net-worth individuals) and providing a car to match. That may sound mechanistic against the romantic spirit of Aston Martin’s heritage, but not for nothing did a Forbes magazine study conclude in 2013 that Palmer was the world’s third most influential marketing officer – after those at Apple and Samsung. Only the coming years will suggest whether his vision is proven right, but Palmer sees no reason why Aston Martin can’t be, as he

puts it, “a second Ferrari”. As he notes, it wasn’t that long ago that Aston Martin was selling more cars than the famed Italian maker. Palmer has, at least, fulfilled one ambition in becoming CEO. “The best thing about the job is the company car,” he says with boyish relish. At the time of writing, he finds himself driving a DB11 – and there’s an enviable garage to choose from. The road ahead is by no means clear, but since his tenure, positive steps have been taken. Aston Martin has (in exchange for a small shareholding) been able to tap into Daimler’s electronic systems capabilities, for example – a crucial step at a time when the car industry is spending billions on just that, seeing it as essential for ensuring longevity. It has come up with some ground-breaking technologies, including the likes of the DB11’s Aeroblade, an ‘invisible’ spoiler. Bonded aluminium and other high-tech material structures have become something of an Aston Martin speciality too, he says, although these may prove useful for the future of the company, again in ways the traditionalists might not approve of: those lightweight, aerodynamic, low-roll resistant structures are perfect for electric cars. “Again, you can’t ignore the rise of the electric car,” says Palmer. “You have to make choices. That doesn’t mean following trends. But it does mean making certain bets on how the world will change. As it happens the things that electric cars like least are mass and drag – and managing those are something Aston Martin is really good at. That kind of technology is really relevant and really sellable.” All in good time. Palmer agrees that there are certainly still ideas that could be imported to the company culture that would help achieve his aims for it. He speaks of the Japanese emphasis on teamwork and admits that when he joined Aston Martin he was surprised by all the internal politics, having been away from that curiously British style of working for so long. “In Japan, working together comes naturally and intrinsically, maybe because they all know they have jobs for life, but they just think for the betterment of the company, rather than the individual,” he explains. But what sets Aston Martin apart, he argues, is passion. That may be a cliché, but Palmer sounds genuinely impressed by what he’s found at his new charge. “Really, never with all the car companies I’ve been associated with over the years have I seen anything like it,” he says. “If you’re just doing it for the money, you’d go over the road here at Gaydon and work for Jaguar Land Rover. But there’s a real sense that working at Aston Martin gives you real standing in the industry. Mention at a dinner party that you work for the company and it makes you the centre of conversation. Here you’re exploring the outer reaches of physics, not the outer reaches of accountancy.” Finance, if you recall, is not a field Palmer has ever worked in. Perhaps that will actually prove to be to Aston Martin’s great benefit. Dig down and Palmer is all about blending the company’s world-class design and engineering capabilities to make what he calls “the most beautiful cars in the world”. It’s as simple – and as complicated – as that.

angkok might be considered an odd choice for holidaymakers looking for a peaceful break, but don’t be put off by the fact that it is the world’s most visited city. Yes, you’ll be in the company of some of the 20 million people that are estimated to touch down there per year, but that’s not to say there aren’t some tranquil spots to be found. Akyra Thonglor is an under-the-radar hotel – yet with plenty of charm – and the perfect spot to explore the quieter side of Bangkok. Recently given a makeover by design agency Begray, known for its conceptual architectural interiors, it is found in Thonglor, a hip corner of the city which was once predominantly the commercial district. Its apartment-style accommodation means rooms and suites have contemporary lounge-dining rooms, floor-to-ceiling windows, and marble bathrooms, with plenty of glamorous detailing (think: eclectic art work, large terraces and advanced technology).

On the roof, serenity is guaranteed at the scenic swimming pool. Offering cityscape views, and prettied with lantern-laden trees, this is just the spot to float on by, after a day spent exploring the city – the hustle and bustle left far below. The hotel’s Som Tam & Chardonnay Restaurant is also found here. The market-style restaurant marries Thai cuisine with Mediterranean dishes – so, as well as Pad Thai and five different som tams (Thailand’s staple green papaya salad) you’ll also find beetroot gnocci and white pizza. Boasting a thriving arts scene and innovative restaurants, Thonglor is one of the most up and coming areas of Bangkok and has called in a hipster following due to its ‘insider’ attractions. One highlight of the area, for example, is its penchant for speakeasy-style bars, such as the industrial Rabbit Hole (it’s found behind an unmarked wooden door between Soi 5 and 6) and J Boroski, found at the end of a dimly-lit street (off Soi 55) attracting an ‘in-the-know’ crowd due to its custom-made cocktails and quirky interiors (check out the arched ceiling which is covered with steel scarab beetles). Collaborative spaces are also a signature of Thonglor and, found in what appears to be a derelict building, Badmotel has become one of the hottest spots in the area, with its vibey restaurant, garden area, club and art space – a world away from the obvious tourist sites. The Commons, meanwhile, is a loft-like community mall, which brings together vintage fashion and some of the best dining to be found in the area, such as Soul Food 555 and Egg My God. Despite its glitzy interiors, this ‘downtown’ experimental vibe is also reflected back in Akyra Thonglor, which has recently opened its own speakeasy, the 008 Bar, tucked away on the 11th floor, with signature cocktails inspired by original Prohibition recipes. Also on offer are ‘insider’ tours of the city, including one run by a professional photographer, who will guide guests on how

to take the ultimate snap while discovering lesser-known areas of Bangkok. For another take on the city, it is also worth making a pitstop at the hotel’s sister property, the nearby Akyra TAS Sukhamvit. Both are owned by the Akyran Hotel group, which has a sustainable yet glam approach to hospitality. With more than eight million tonnes of plastic thrown away each year, the group aims to become single-use plastic-free by 2020, starting with its new opening. From arrival, you are given gentle reminders as to the ethos – there are stylish, stainless-steel water bottles left in your room (which can be refilled at water stations found on each floor) and inroom toiletries packaged in locally-made celadon containers (these are filled with fragrant, essential-oil-based products). There are no single-use plastics in the bars, bio-degradable bin bags are used in rooms and fabric totes are available guests to use. Décor at TAS Sukhamvit also pushes boundaries and is industrial and edgy – albeit with plenty of luxe touches, such as fine linens and oversized duck-down pillows. There are caged exposed bulbs for lighting, natural wood accents and travel chests doubling up as coffee tables. Balconies give views over the heart of the city, while Marshall speakers and

50s-style leather chairs give a retro feel. For sunset drinks, head to the Rise Rooftop Terrace Bar, which offers a chillout soundtrack, a Southeast Asian cocktail list and a craft-beer menu. The bar is also home to a transparent swimming pool – ideal for midnight dips under the stars. Once you’ve had your urban fix, a trip to Phuket is the perfect way to round off your me-time experience. Here, on Natai Beach, on the Andaman coast, Akyran’s laid-back Akyra Beach Club continues the ‘quiet luxury’ feel. It has just 58 rooms, so it is small enough to be able to offer a personalised approach to holidaying. The blue-and-white hued resort is focused around a curvy pool, and private beach, where you can kick back in a cabana or on one of the oversized bean bags. Rooms and suites are pared-back yet elegant with wood furniture, incredible ocean views and contemporary bathrooms. If you want to be left alone, simply place a carved wooden turtle outside your door – the resort’s USP is to help you do as little or as much as you want.

All-day dining is relaxed yet doesn’t skimp on culinary prowess – you can start your day with a gourmet breakfast or healthy granola, for instance, while for lunch tuck into a freshly-caught snapper or spicy crab tempura. Come evening time, you can watch the sun go down in the al fresco dining room, with a signature Thai dish, such as khao pad (a local fried rice), paneang prawns or green curry. For those wanting to be active, there’s plenty of classes to keep you occupied, from paddle boarding to surfing, Thai boxing to Crossfit. The go-with-the-flow approach also sees the concierge offer a curated choice of inspiring trips on a daily basis – highlights include island hopping around Phang Nga Bay, rubber plantation bike trips and visits to the night market in Phuket old town. For the dreamiest moments, however, head to the Ayurah Spa for a Fusion Massage Therapy which takes place in a beach cabana and uses locally-sourced aromatherapy oils to release tension. It’s the ultimate feel-good factor – just keep it on the quiet. Stay at Akyra Thonglor Bangkok, from £120, and at Akyra TAS Sukhumvit Bangkok, from £100 per night including breakfast. hich is the best hotel in Paris? With there being so many to choose from and more set to open this year, it’s certainly a tough question. Some might vote for the palatial splendour of the Four Seasons, or the neoclassical grandeur of Shangri-La Hotel, or perhaps the contemporary elegance of the Mandarin Oriental. For myself, however, there is only one possible answer – Le Bristol. Opened in 1925 and situated on the glamorous rue de Faubourg Saint-Honoré, a street flanked with designer boutiques, the hotel lives up to the concept of a classic never going out of style, confirmed every February when the sartorial elite descend during Paris Fashion Week. Le Bristol is the capital’s first establishment to be awarded the prestigious ‘Palace’ rating – elevating it to an even higher status than five-star – and inside, one can see why its regal status is well-deserved. The grand reception area features crystal chandeliers, gleaming marble floors

and Louis XVI-style furniture. Steps leading down to the main foyer are fittingly lined with red carpet, welcoming in its elite clientele. While the decor may appear imposing, the staff at Le Bristol are not, welcoming everyone as an honoured guest. As our room wasn’t quite ready yet, my companion and I took a seat in the elegant Café Antonia, decorated in the hotel’s signature red and green hues. This is the perfect place to do some people watching (a very necessary pastime during your stay), from high-flying businessmen having a meeting to chic Parisian ladies enjoying a leisurely afternoon tea. Breakfast is served here every morning and is an occasion not to be missed, with exquisite pastries and eggs with soldiers arriving sprinkled with caviar. Guests are taken up to their rooms in the hotel’s decadent Art Deco iron lift, first installed in the 1940s and still in perfect working order. Our bedroom is generous in size (as indeed are all of the 190 rooms and suites at Le Bristol) and traditional in design. Since my stay, all of the rooms and suites have been refurbished and given a more modern facelift while remaining true the hotel’s classical

There is a wealth of treatments available, but I would highly recommend a facial. The Tata Harper facial incorporates the cult skincare brand’s natural, non-toxic and chemical-free products – ideal for those of you who, like myself, suffer from sensitive skin. Despite having only travelled for two hours via Eurostar, my complexion displayed all of the symptoms of travel fatigue, so I promptly opted for the Hydrating Booster Facial – a 55-minute treatment which leaves skin rejuvenated and glowing. for relaxation. These meditation sessions are conducted overlooking the hotel’s beautiful garden. (Incidentally, Le Bristol is the only palace hotel in Paris to have its own garden). The hotel has two restaurants, the three Michelin-starred Epicure and Le 114 Faubourg, the more informal but still excellent brasserie, which also boasts its own Michelin star. This year marks a very exciting moment for the hotel and Epicure’s head chef Eric Frechon, as together they celebrate 20 years with him at the culinary helm and a decade having acquired and held the coveted three stars. To mark this momentous achievement, it promises to be a year of gastronomy at Le Bristol as Frechon has created a special 20year anniversary menu featuring his haute cuisine masterpieces in nine epic courses, including caviar from Sologne with mousseline potatoes and smoked haddock, and stuffed macaroni with black truffle, artichoke and duck foie gras. Along with this, it has long been Frechon’s mission (along no doubt with every Parisian chef ) to make the best bread possible, believing it to be the first and most important encounter a guest has at the dining table. The ground-breaking chef installed his very own mill in the hotel’s basement at the end of last year (making it the first and only hotel to produce its own flour from ancient wheats on site) in order to introduce his innovative Living Bread concept, whereby diners eating at Epicure can take home their own loaf. Guests can also visit the mill should they so wish upon special request. Of course, everyone has their own idea of what makes a great hotel. It is very subjective. There are those who believe it’s the staff, for some it’s the food, for others it’s the ambience. But when a hotel fulfils all of these expectations, then there’s really no argument – which is why I have crowned Le Bristol the best in Paris. Rooms at Le Bristol start from €1,400 per night, with breakfast included; 20th anniversary menu by Eric Frechon at Epicure, €380, excluding beverages; Tata Harper Hydrating Booster Facial at Spa Le Bristol by La Prairie, €200 available by reservation only, lebristolparis.com

uinta do Lago, the five-star premium residential community on the Ria Formosa nature reserve in southern Algarve, Portugal, offers its guests exclusivity at every turn. Private beaches, pristine championship golf courses, 24/7 elite security, and myriad trendy eateries each with their own take on the resort’s nutritional wellness offering. Already a cut above the rest when it comes to sporting and architectural prowess, its latest openings propel Quinta do Lago onto a separate playing field altogether. Situated amid 2,000 acres of the picturesque Ria Formosa National Park, the campus is a unique €10 million training, fitness and wellness facility catering to elite, professional athletes and enthusiastic amateurs alike. Built in two phases over two years and designed by architects Essência Criativa, the first phase saw the arrival of tennis and padel courts last year. With the second phase finalised in September 2018, the campus now comprises an incredible high-performance sports and fitness training centre too. For the uninitiated, the high-tech centre is a world-class multisport venue. Aimed at hosting elite athletes and clubs, the campus has already been selected as a pre-season training base by the British Paratriathlon Elite team, and has welcomed teams such as Olympique de Marseille, Burnley F.C., Beijing Sinobo Guoan F.C. and Croatia’s national team. The facilities include a stadium quality DESSO GrassMaster hybrid pitch, equipped with locker rooms, a recovery suite with hot and cold plunge pools, sauna and steam room and a centre for active living and sports medicine. It also houses two high performance gymnasiums, dedicated studios for cycle and group exercise, and an outdoor 25m heated swimming pool. “The campus is the new heart of Quinta do Lago and of the Algarve,” says Sean Moriarty, chief executive of Quinta do Lago. “It is a fly-to destination for people who love sports and healthy lifestyle; an exciting new facility that adds a unique lifestyle experience for our regular guests, but that will also attract a complete new audience for this new elite training venue.” Quinta do Lago is conveniently just 15 minutes from Faro airport, offering residents and guests an unparalleled location benefitting from a year-round temperate climate and a variety of lifestyle options. It has also become a destination for leading architecture, and its most recent additions to its finite portfolio of residential property are breathtaking. The Lagula Villa, which completed in March 2018, is a turn-key six-bedroom, contemporary villa. Listed for sale at €5.95m, it is designed by Barcelona-based Lagula Arquitectes, and celebrates traditional Portuguese architecture through contemporary disciplines. It combines indoor and outdoor living, with freeflowing spaces for both entertaining and reflection. Large courtyards at the lower level illuminate the interiors

with reflected light and provide private, secluded terraces. At ground level, external cantilevers and a proscenium structure of concrete beams and columns create a sheltered outdoor area and offer corners of privacy. Here the pool, terrace and landscaped garden both connect and create a separation between the villa’s interior rooms and the exterior entertaining areas. The villa’s sliding or pivoting glass panels, six metres high in some areas, enhance the relationship further. Internally the functional areas are at the villa’s core while the entertaining and living areas surround these in an L-shape. Throughout its 2,000 acres Quinta do Lago features numerous homes for sale and rent including impressive villas, contemporary homes and apartments. The Lagula Villa forms part of three new residential offerings, the second being Reserva, a contemporary building of 26 versatile four-bedroom garden and penthouse apartments, and the third being the availability of several exclusive plots for sale providing the rare opportunity to create a dream home in the most desirable enclaves within the resort. Designed by Algarve-based João Cabrita, who created “clean minimalist proportions to work in harmony with the landscape”, Reserva overlooks Quinta do Lago’s famous lake with views to the Atlantic. The apartments have extensive terraces with pools, private subtropical landscaped gardens and lawns, and secure underground parking. Ownership secures exclusive use of the Reserva Club, along with its 24-hour concierge, a heated outdoor pool, members’ lounge, private gym with treatment rooms, children’s play facilities, tennis courts and lakeside sun terraces. The lateral living low-rise development, scheduled for completion in 2019, fans out elegantly into a D-shape westfacing building, and already 17 of its 26 garden and penthouse apartments have been sold off-plan, says Jamie Robinson, director of real estate: “No other place in Europe enjoys the unique waterside location of Reserva, with views of the lake, lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean. The demand for these homes speaks for itself.” With prices starting from €2 million, Reserva apartments are available in two formats: Garden Residence and Penthouse, all with their own private pool and landscaped gardens or roof terraces. For those looking to build from scratch, however, the 26 home sites at San Lorenzo North offer a carte blanche. Owners have a free reign in design and materials while not exceeding a build density of 25 per cent or two storeys above ground). “What makes these plots so special is their exclusivity, privacy, the unspoiled natural setting and proximity to our ever-improving resort amenities,” says Moriarty. “We continue to nurture a community feel built in harmony with our finest asset - the stunning natural surroundings to enjoy our world-class facilities in the 300-plus days of sunshine a year.”

AOP AWARDS 2019

Monday 15 April - Friday 31 May The Association of Photographers (AOP) is the leading organisation for those working in the creative image-making industry. Established in 1968 by a group of photographers, the AOP is now one of the most highly regarded photographic bodies in the sector, lobbying on behalf of photographers and the industry. 2019 will mark the 35th anniversary of the AOP Awards, devised as a showcase for the best in professional photography by AOP members. They were quickly joined by the Open Awards, aimed at non-members. The Student Awards soon followed, a competition that has become a springboard for emerging photographers, helping them get their first major break into the industry. In 2014 both the member and open categories were combined into one main competition. The 2019 exhibition at Canary Wharf will include all 240

CARTOGRAPHIC COLOUR Tuesday 16 April – Monday 27 May

Photographer Giles Revell’s images reinterpret the colours of well-loved flowers, abstracting them to eliminate the distraction of form. Petals and stems are reduced to an accurate graphic rendering of their normal hues. The images, first printed in Cartographic Colour published by Concentric Editions, will be on display in the lush green backdrop of Crossrail Place in spring, the season of new growth.

“The common thread running through my work is a curiosity to observe well known themes with an alternative viewpoint. The aim of Cartographic Colour was to create a body of work examining the colour palette of flora without any trace of form. Carefully prepared photographs of flowers were mapped and meticulously sampled for hue and saturation. These were then rebuilt as blocks and circles of varying scales creating abstract yet accurate reinterpretations of colour alone. The idea was to examine the importance of colour in our perception of beauty as well as discover the combination of colours found in plants that subliminally influence everyday design. The inspiration for my work comes from diverse sources. I have a science degree and am fascinated by exploring the overlaps between art, science, technology, photography and film. I like multi disciplinary artists, the work of László Moholy-Nagy encompassing a vast range of media, as well as William Klein, a polymath whose work ranges from design and fashion to street photography.” - Giles Revell. CAROLINA COHEN Carolina Cohen’s Ginga Collection was inspired by her perception of Brazilian sensuality and derives from the Portuguese expression describing ‘the soul of the Brazilian, movement and creativity with the body’.

Lansbury Lawrence School is proud of the creative curriculum that it provides for children. Last year the school embarked on an ambitious project with architects Matt + Fiona and the Whitechapel Gallery, to create a much-needed Room for Art. Under the guidance of Matt + Fiona, children researched, planned and designed a bespoke art room that could be used by everyone in the school and also the wider community. The school is now fundraising, to make the Room for Art a reality.

Park Drive, designed by worldrenowned architects Stanton Williams, is the first of the new residential buildings to be built on the Canary Wharf estate. The building is positioned close to South Dock and linked to the water by beautifully landscaped gardens and parks. The first residents will be moving in next year within the friendly neighbourhood of Canary Wharf’s new district, Wood Wharf. Residents will live in close proximity to a whole host of handpicked bars, shops and restaurants as well as the many arts and events on offer on the Estate. Wood Wharf is also a place to put down roots with the restful waterside living, the spacious broadwalks as well as the community feel of a two form primary school for 420 children and GP surgery. For those who work on the Estate, the benefits of working close to home include an enviable short and leisurely commute to work which many of the new residents of 10 Park Drive will enjoy.

“The first of the new residential buildings to be built on the Canary Wharf estate”

Consumer research* commissioned by Canary Wharf Group shows that 48% of respondents say proximity to their place of work is important when looking for a new home. A third of those surveyed would consider moving home to be nearer to their place of work. Younger respondents are most likely to think this, with 63% of 25-34 year-old saying it was important. *based on 2,000 respondents

WALK TO WORK DAY Friday 5 April is Walk to Work Day, so set down your car keys, get off the tube or bus a few stops earlier, and add some healthy movement to your day. Walking to work provides many health benefits that the majority of London’s commuters cannot enjoy. Swapping sedentary travel and a polluted underground for an active journey in the fresh air is not only better for our physical and mental health but will help reduce carbon emissions too.

rom a cosy armchair by the fire to on-trend velvet dining chairs and bedroom benches, velvet is set to take over every room in 2019. Online searches for velvet skyrocketed by 400 per cent in the past six months, and our love of this luxurious fabric continues apace in 2019. It’s not hard to see why, either. A soft, tactile surface that has taken both our homes and wardrobes by storm, velvet is king of versatility. Velvet has long been synonymous with luxury and opulence, but thanks to today’s advances in fabric technology, it’s now possible to balance a stunning textured visual with the convenience factor too. The velvets of yesteryear were easy to stain, on the stiffer side and available in limited colours, but these days, you can bathe in the beauty of upholstered velvets and accents galore that are soft and plush with a number of low-maintenance characteristics from machine-washable to fade, stain and abrasion-resistant. Another surprising factor is the use of velvet in spring. Far from being bogged down by thick, baroque, dramatic scenes, contemporary velvet now offers easy, tassel-free perfection

104

for the warmer climes. Think crushed velvet lampshades or eye-catching upholstered walls — there are few places this alluring textile isn’t right at home. Velvet beds and sofas are some of the most covetable ways to bring the look home, but for the more daring, why not try velvet wallpaper for a showstopping feature wall, or a velvet floor lamp for some free-standing statement lighting. Best of all, velvet comes into its own when twinned with metallic hues and gold or brass trims, so any new addition to your home will blend seamlessly with your favourite items from previous seasons.

CUSHIONS/POUFS

The introduction of a new design trend into the home can be a daunting task, and when investing in items of large furniture it’s one that you don’t want to get wrong. Dip your toe in first with throw cushions and poufs; not only do they combo well with nearly any other item, old or new, but starting small gives you the freedom to explore with patterns and colours, and to just be that little bit braver than normal.

SOFA

While trends come and go, a sofa is a serious investment piece that needs consideration. The beauty of velvet this year, however, is that the textile works in harmony with most other fabrics and surfaces. It feels appropriate with a traditional shape or tufting, but also jazzes up a more streamlined modern frame. The secret is to avoid dark shades and opt for more versatile pinks, light greys or even a jewel tone.

CHAIRS

Headboards have evolved into something far greater than a humble back rest. They now form a bedroom centrepiece, and when awash with velvet and twinned with velvet accessories, the result is showstopping. Opt for a velvet dream like Essentials’ bonded blush design to provide the grandeur of Gatsby with the convenience of modern day living.

Velvet chairs come in all shapes and sizes but are versatile enough to be used in almost any room of the home. From comfy armchairs to retro creations, velvet chairs are ubiquitous at present. For the living room, opt for something inviting that you can curl up into with a great book, while in the kitchen a high bar stool with brass or metal legs is all the rage. VELVET ON VELVET

While an all-velvet furniture scheme can be a little over the top, velvet lends itself beautifully to layering. A multitude of cushions, rugs, poufs and sofas all awash with colour will give a room dimension and vibrancy – perfect for spring shades and summer effervescence. Pair it with other touchyfeely fabrics, such as leather, coarse linen and other hand-spun yarns for the ultimate finish.

BEDSPREAD Velvet Stitch Throw, from £200, John Lewis, Canada Place

Soft, durable and perfect for snuggling, a velvet bedspread is the ideal way to introduce a hint of it into your bedroom. Team it with a velvet chair, headboard or even curtains for an investment with bold expression, or pair back with something altogether effortless yet still effective by way of a velvet throw cushion, pillow or ottoman. It’s the ultimate expression of textured simplicity.

CRUSHED VELVET

Sound lighting remains key to any design interior, but when twinned with velvet it can reinvigorate a room on a whole new level. Give an old favourite lamp a new lease of life with a vibrant and tactile velvet lampshade, or go the whole hog and opt for top to toe, such as Oliver Bonas’ Ero tassel velvet floor lamp – the essence of maximalism.

Interiors are all about texture and crushed velvet is riding high as a favourite finish for 2019. Featuring prominently in all areas, from waste paper bins to wallpaper and rugs to furniture, crushed velvet brings a touch of decadence and comfort to any home interior. For spring this year, avoid the darker shades and instead invest in animated tones from emerald and ruby to coral blush and duck egg blue.
