WOMEN OF INFLUENCE

WOMAN OF INFLUENCE ANDREA MASON:

RAISING THE BARRE AND EMPOWERING WOMEN story: Christine Eddington / photography: Shevaun Williams

Andrea Mason is a thoughtful woman with a radiant smile and an easy manner that belies her incredible drive. Physically, she’s in fantastic shape, and mentally, she is becoming stronger day by day despite having just gone through one of the toughest times in her life. As she sits, delicately nibbling on a scone and musing about life, one thing becomes clear: Andrea Mason is on a mission to empower women to create a seamless lifestyle full of emotional and physical wellness. Mason is the owner and driving force behind three metro Barre3 studios, which explains her fit physic, and the impossibly beautiful downtown Oklahoma City Spa, Udånder. “With Barre3 and Udånder, it’s all about making fitness and spa services easy to access, then encouraging women to make them their own based on what they need and to implement them into their everyday. I want to help people create the lifestyle they want to live.” She goes on to explain that Barre3 creator Sadie Lincoln was instrumental in helping Mason, a Portland native, find her literal and metaphorical voice and she very much wants to pay it forward. “Before I started teaching at Barre3, I was terrified to speak in public. Sadie assisted me in finding my own voice. “She is still one of my mentors today, and her gift to me was that she empowered me to teach, not just to own. And that is my desire for others. I want women to challenge themselves. A little shakiness and discomfort, whether in a workout or in life, propel us to make change and allow us to reflect and allow us to reflect and find growth in all that we do in life. Mason, an athlete in college, loves Barre3 because its movements are precise and sophisticated, because it’s intense, and because the surroundings of a Barre3 studio create culture. “When I

10 LUXIERE

take class, my mind goes to a place of clarity. I always walk out with a new vision or some sort of an a-ha moment, big or small. I want to help others find that in between moment in their day.” One lesson she’s taken to heart recently is that when clarity comes, whether it be personal or about her businesses, she takes action immediately, which she encourages others to try. “It helps me to stay open minded and it breeds manifestation. You have to allow it in, whatever “it” is – an idea, a need to reach out to a friend, time for taking a class, whatever it may be. It allows you to become opportunity driven and present, without forcing things.” She applies this to everything from running her current businesses, to raising her two children Jada, 10 and Elijah, 6, to dreaming about her future plans as a creative entrepreneur. “I would love to create a place of all of my favorite things under one roof. That is the goal.” Mason’s motto these days are to “walk hard and strong.” It’s a sentiment she has appropriated from a motivational desk calendar she was gifted from an entrepreneurial business seminar. “I believe you’ve got to follow your dreams, surround yourself with passionate people, and stay focused on the course and your specific path. One of my favorite books is, “7 Spiritual Laws of Success” by Deepak Chopra, and it was and still is a game changer for me. It’s about the law of detachment, and how we go about finding our greater purpose.” Then she looks up and smiles. “I am very grateful. This is a divine time in my life.”

SITE SEEING & CYCLING WHY NOT BIKE THROUGH BURGUNDY?

Bike, eat, drink, sleep, repeat. A marvelous mantra for two would be oenophiles and devoted Francophiles to explore the bounty of Burgundy. Visions of winding through Medieval roads, forged by farmers and monks, pedaling off the pounds with the promise of a palatial picnic, tours and tastings at centuries-old, family-owned micro-production wineries, capped by Michelin star dining and a five-star Chateau were all it took for the bank card to be bound. Charming, half-timbered structures and cobblestone streets score the squares of Beaune in the heart of Burgundy where our tour began. A toast of crisp Cremant, sparkling wine made outside of the Champaign region of France, and we were off to the sumptuous smells of the Saturday market. While locals shopped for their weekly pork, poultry and pasta, we opted for creamy Camembert, crunchy baguettes, foie-gras stuffed figs and briny local oysters to provision our first picnic. A quick six-mile ride acquainted us with our bikes and the terraced terroir of this picturesque peloton. At the Ropiteau winery our pulled-together picnic and a delightfully oak-free Chardonnay accompanied us as we awaited winery manager Felix. He finally appeared sporting what our troupe later agreed was his clubbing coif from the night before. As we navigated the narrow passage down to the damp cellar, Felix reminded us that Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are the primary wines

of Burgundy. Although the annual vintage had just been barreled, and a strong level of CO2 hung in the air, the cool dank atmosphere was intoxicating and we hadn’t even had a sip of fruit. Without the worry of biking our way back home, evening brought our first opportunity to truly imbibe without consequence as we made copious deposits in our calorie-burn bank. A bright British couple, Boston bred professional woman and two witty guides made for excellent dining and travel companions. Burgundian specialties like Poularde de Bresse en vessie (you’ll have to look it up), Boeuf Bourguignon of Charolais beef and gloriously-garlicy escargot peppered the menu with delight. In languidly French fashion, we lingered for hours over petite courses and plentiful pours before retiring to respite, wake and do it all again. Many companies offer biking tours in Europe. Tours are typically four to seven days and include bikes, lodging, tours and most meals. There are tours for every level of biker some even include electric bike options. It’s best to book tours in the spring and fall when crowds are lighter and the temperatures are more moderate. Burgundy is a delightfully historic place to visit even if you aren’t planning on biking.

BRADY SEXTON greets me from the warm, inviting entry to his

restaurant. His disposition is relaxed, even suave. We take a seat at a corner table and enjoy a brief, collegial conversation, as though were already comrades. When we finish, Sexton stops to pick microscopic crumbs off of the black table cloth before shaking my hand. This intensive attention to detail and quality is what elevates Scratch to a completely different standard in Oklahoma cuisine. 14 LUXIERE

Scratch, on Norman’s Main Street, occupies the space of the since-moved Native Roots Market, and pledges food and cocktails made completely from scratch. Sexton, born and raised in Norman, opened his doors in 2013. I sat down with the culinary innovator himself to understand the thoroughness and originality behind his beloved eatery.

P R O V I S I O N S & L I B AT I O N S

GD: So tell me a little about yourself. BS: I grew up in Norman and graduated from Norman High in ‘97. After that I went to OU but dropped out because I wanted to manage restaurants for the Hal Smith Restaurant Group. I soon had kids, which the restaurant business didn’t work well with, so I worked in oil and gas for about eight years. Somewhere in between, I got my degree. Then, this opportunity came along when my friends closed their grocery store here. GD: Where did the original concept of Scratch come from? BS: Bittercube is a company that makes bitters in Milwaukee. The cofounder of Scratch, Ira Koplowitz is a lifelong friend, and also the coowner of Bittercube. When I went to Chicago and had some of Bittercube’s cocktails at a bar, I knew that I wanted to do drinks like that. We have freshly-squeezed juices at the bar, we make our own liqueurs and syrups, and we even make our own ketchup and mayonnaise in the kitchen. No preservatives, no high fructose corn syrups, just really good stuff. GD: Was there one specific moment when you discovered you wanted to pursue a career in the food industry? BS: I knew when I took my first job as a busboy. I really loved the energy in a restaurant. You do the same thing every day, but it’s different every time you do it. For the Hal Smith Company, I honestly knew as soon as I bussed my first table. GD: How do you define “real” food? BS: The organic and local movements are both great, and Oklahoma is getting around to it, but my definition of real food is food that comes straight out of the ground or straight off of an animal. GD: What do you hope customers take away from eating at Scratch? BS: We talk to our staff about always making sure our guests have an experience when they come here. Great food, great service, and great cocktails are not enough to make your restaurant special. If anything, our customers will remember feeling great while here, and if they walk out of Scratch feeling better than they did when they arrived, then we have achieved our goal. GD: What is your ultimate goal for Scratch? BS: Both the chef and I believe the obesity and diabetes epidemics are due to additives, chemicals and preservatives, so we are zeroed in on real, organic food. We don’t think about fad diets or being gluten-free. Our core belief here is if you eat real food, you’re going to be fine, and we want people to realize that. I think you’re going to feel good when you eat here. Mostly we just want people to have fun.

SPOTLIGHT

MOMENTS WITH DR. KATHYLEE SANTANGELO By Sherry Dale, Partner - The Mettise Group

I recently had the opportunity to speak with Dr KathyLee Santangelo about her bold journey from cardiothoracic surgeon to entrepreneur. Here are a few highlights from a woman I consider to be a collaborative leader, visionary, compassionate soul and healer extraordinaire. SD: Tell us about your path to starting Totality? KS: Totality became a reality just recently, although I think ever since I decided to be in the healing profession of medicine, its seed has been there. Choosing to study surgery gave me the immediate gratification of “fixing” the body. Eventually, I settled on the specialty of heart and lung surgery, and thrived on the intensity, the rigorous, demanding, nonstop schedule, and the exhilarating rewards of being a cardiothoracic surgeon. Life changes, though, and as my husband and I were blessed with our sons, I longed for regular weekends, attending soccer games, helping with homework and celebrating family birthdays.

16 LUXIERE

I shifted my career to a specialty where better life balance would be possible for me, and appropriate for my patients. I started Total Vein Care Center in 2009 with Tina Crabtree, RN, MBA, as an independent medical practice with the goal of someday being the best vein care center in Oklahoma. In 2015, this practice became the only vein care center in the state to earn national accreditation. Total Vein Care Center is now Totality, because our services have expanded to include aesthetics and diagnostic ultrasound imaging, along with the best vein care in the state. SD: Why the name Totality? KS: The name Totality comes from our former name, Total Vein Care Center, from its meaning of “complete, unified closure”

SPOTLIGHT

which happens to be the way we now treat varicose veins. Our logo’s three interlocking circles reflect simplicity, completeness, and wholeness. The rings also represent the person seeking health care services, the team providing the services, and the common goal of better health and wellness, as well as our three main offerings to patients. SD: Describe the Totality customer experience. KS: At Totality our patients feel valued from the moment they step in our doors. The luxurious lobby was designed to make you feel as though you are at an upscale spa. The grandeur of ten-foot windows, beautiful furnishings and architecture and calming music allows patients to relax. Totality values all who enter our doors. SD: What do you think about the future of healthcare in the US? KS: Healthcare in the United States is being redefined in this early part of the 21st Century. As we learn more about the building blocks of the human genome, as we acknowledge mind, body, spirit connections, and as we experience the benefits of modern medicine, we find our focus is on wellness and the maintenance of the best health for a community and for individuals. Health care now has as much impact on being healthy day-to-day and maintaining health as it does in treating illness, disease, sickness, and pain.

early adult years were filled with love, the joy of family adventures, the discoveries of education, and the strength of faith. Because I acknowledge these influences, I tend to be a collaborative, servant leader who engages my team in the process, values everyone’s contributions, and continually strives for excellence. SD: What are you doing to ensure you continue to grow and develop as a leader? KS: I’m a member of the Posse, a peer advisory group for female entrepreneurs and leaders. We hold each other accountable and act as a supportive community for the challenges of leadership. I work with a business consultant to advise me and bring wisdom to our growing practice. My culture is also very inclusive and I involve my team in running the business and making strategic decisions. SD: Tell us more about your clinic KS: We specialize in vein care, diagnostic ultrasound imaging, and aesthetics. I, KathyLee Santangelo, MD, FACS, serve patients suffering from venous problems. Steve Bernhardt, RVT RPhS provides ultrasounds, Connie Fogarty, RN BSN, offers aesthetic services such as dermal fillers, Botox, micro-needling, vein wave, and sclerotherapy for spider veins. We welcome questions and would love to talk with anyone about any of our services.

SD: What are the highlights and challenges of owning your business? KS: I sometimes struggle with the duality of dedicating my career to serving others and of owning a business. Taking care of others is the highlight of my work life. Nothing is more satisfying than the gratitude of someone who is helped by our services, someone who has an answer to a nagging question about their health or someone who is relieved of some chronic symptom, or someone who looks in the mirror and smiles at their reflection. SD: How has your life experience made you the leader you are today? KS: I have had the privilege of being raised by loving parents in a family with three sisters on the East Coast. My childhood and

55TH ANNUAL

WESTERN HERITAGE AWARDS By Bob Warterfield

The 55th annual Western Heritage Awards took place on Saturday, April 16th at Oklahoma City’s National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum. At this “black tie preferred” event, there were samplings of the standard tux and gown, however, the prevailing fashion leaned heavily toward black tie variations of western wear. It was a style every bit as proper and elegant, making a clear statement regarding the cultural background of the majority of attendees. Boots and Stetsons were a dominating constant. Stetsons were only removed during the national anthem, the invocation and a special tribute to the American flag by renowned cowboy poet Baxter Black. Moving through the gathering crowd, there was no doubt that the event about to commence was one which carried a special and meaningful significance. Speaking with board member Judy Hatfield at a preevent reception the previous evening, Judy provided an excellent insight to the philosophy shared by those attending the award ceremony. “We are firm believers in the western heritage legacy wherein your word is your bond and integrity matters. The Western Heritage Award

18 LUXIERE

reflects that viewpoint across the broad spectrum of the Arts. People here are passionate that we don’t lose the legacy that the West exemplifies.” John Higginbotham, Bank of Oklahoma Market CEO for Oklahoma City said, “This museum is about legacy and what we need to preserve for unborn generations. As a reflection of the importance of western culture, people come from all over the country to be here.” Board member and former Oklahoma First Lady Cathy Keating echoed the past, present and future importance of America’s western heritage and the ongoing role of the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Center in preserving and perpetuating such a vital legacy. On awards night, a full-capacity crowd was welcomed inside the spectacular Sam Noble Special Events Center by Steven M. Karr, Ph. D., President and CEO of the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum and Lynn Friess, Vice Chairwoman of the Board. Master of Ceremonies Anson Mount from AMC Television’s “Hell on Wheels” series opened the evening’s festivities.

2844 Guilford sits at an expansive corner lot in Nichols Hills—four bedrooms, six bathrooms and a spacious five-car garage—in need of the proper occupants to fill its well-crafted space. Written By Melanie Wilderman

Originally two smaller lots with aging rental properties, the now redeveloped 5,688-square-foot house whispers rustic tunes, yet mingles with modernity. Beneath the contemporary touches of dual dishwashers and expertly placed exterior lighting accents, some of 2844 Guilford’s original structure from the 1950’s holds strong. Originally pegged as a complete tear down, the builder, Steve Allen of Allenton and AllenStyle Homes, found internal structure worth salvaging, in what is now a guesthouse, and designed the rest of the home around it. 2844 Guilford Lane | Nichols Hills, OK

Like many Nichols Hills homes, 2844 escaped the cookie cutter. The kitchen boasts quartz countertops, thwarting the overabundance of granite in other modern homes. LED lighting installed along the staircase allows lights to change color for holiday dĂŠcor or for the mood of the owner (or maybe the house itself). A plethora of Anderson windows offer an ocean-side Florida feel, open and airy. Abundant natural light provides a cozy glow, glinting off warm metallic accents in the kitchen and sinking into the earthy quality of hardwood flooring and uniquely detailed woodworking throughout the home.

Aside from showcasing these lovely conversation-inducing aesthetics, 2844 Guilford understands the secret to a blissful relationship; the master suite allows a couple to live their best life together by giving them some space apart with separate closets, showers, vanities and toilets. In a premiere location, offering comfort and convenience, efficiency and enjoyment, this property stands the test of time while rolling right along with it.
