WOMEN OF INFLUENCE

WOMAN OF INFLUENCE SARAH MASON SEARS story: Christine Eddington / photography: Shevaun Williams

Sarah Mason Sears wields her influence with the precision of a scientist and the heart of an artist. You know (and probably love) her work, even if you don’t know you do. Her business is the alchemy of branding and marketing which, when done right, is as powerful as any magic. She and her company, S Design Inc., have helped create many of our state’s most enduring and iconic brands. A quick jaunt around Oklahoma City reveals a sampling of her work. She has created or refreshed the brand identities of Downtown OKC, Inc., Myriad Botanical Gardens, the Boathouse District, Oklahoma City Community Foundation, Schlegel Bicycles, Red Coyote, Naifeh Fine Jewelry, Impact Oklahoma, Verbode, Embark, and the list goes on and on. Her work is an exercise in restrained beauty. It’s elegant. There are no gimmicks, no frivolity, just useful, articulate beauty. “I had a mission, which sounds simple in retrospect,” Sears shares. Our conversation takes place over an organic, locally-sourced breakfast at Oklahoma City’s creative haven, Elemental Coffee. As we chat, clients and friends pop by the table to tell her hello or give her a hug. She is impeccably designed herself, with a bright, contagious smile, and the kind of smart beauty every woman wants to have. Her style veers vaguely and regally into Scandinavian hippie territory, somehow very clean and a little bit earthy. “When I came back to Oklahoma City in 1994, it was really before the renaissance we have today. There were few jobs, it was hard. When I look back, my mission was to bring beauty to the city that I love, one project at a time. I just wanted things to be beautiful.”

10 LUXIERE

Before opening S Design, which offers high-level design, branding, public relations and professional writing services, Sears was a professor of typography for nearly a decade, sharing her craft with a new generation. She is a fine arts graduate of the University of Kansas, the daughter, fittingly, of an engineer and an artist. Educating the public about design is something she has continued to do via S Design’s series of sold-out Round Table seminars on such topics as increasing your brand’s value or maintaining your brand’s identity. “The hardest part about what we do is human nature. People covet what they see. Our goal is to do completely original work for each client, based on what they require and the research we do. The client has to be willing to trust that doing something different will be better, but many people prefer to be safe. When people are willing to walk through the discomfort of doing something completely new and unique, they see real success. Red Coyote allowed that to happen. Most of our clients allow that to happen.” By her estimation, she and her phalanx of remarkable designers and writers have created some 160 visual identities over the course of her 22 years in business. “The very best designs are the designs that serve their purpose, and are elegant and beautifully designed. They endure. You never have to change them.”

WOODS AND WATERS WINERY A BRILLIANT GEM IS HIDDEN NO MORE by Melanie Wilderman Too many times to count, Alexis and Tim Kaiser have heard “Wow, I had no idea this was here,” from clients and guests about their glorious hidden gem, the Woods and Waters Winery and Vineyard in Anadarko. The Kaisers took management in late 2015, and have since been building on the well-established, excellent reputation of the property. Under its previous owner, who opened the doors in 1998, the winery has become

a top competitor, notably sweeping the Max Knotts Award for Outstanding Vintner in 2015 and 2016. The Kaisers plan to keep the awards coming and are off to a good start. The 2016 Max Knotts award came under their tutelage. They also plan to reach out to more people, and invite them to share in the joys of their 250 acres, perfectly situated in western Oklahoma which, perhaps unexpectedly, enjoys prime weather for growing vinifera wine grapes.

We are ‘there for the party’ as much as our customers. “ We’re working on making it less of a hidden gem, and more of a well-known one. ” - ALEXIS KAISER

Offering 34 varieties of wine, all made on site, the business reigns unique among Oklahoma wineries for its 28 acres of grapes and full restaurant. Jeff Powell, the chef at Woods and Waters, grew up visiting his father, a foodie before foodies were en vogue, in Anadarko. He shared fond memories of these visits and his father’s slow-simmered marinara sauce. Powell trained at the California Culinary Academy, and spent time working in restaurants in the San Francisco Bay area and Dallas-Ft. Worth. “I love to cook pretty much everything,” Jeff said, as he filtered a cabernet in the property’s wine production building, just a short walk from the restaurant and tasting room. Powell cooks when the restaurant is open on Saturdays, and the self-described Jack of all trades works in nearly every capacity of wine production the rest of the week. The restaurant’s menu touts stimulating flavor pairings, like the mushroom and gruyere tart paired with a crisp white merlot, but also keeps food on its menu for the more traditional palate—steak and baked potatoes are staples. Whether it’s a southern favorite (think Cajun chicken and biscuits topped with Creole cream gravy) or a more exotic plate (think Saganaki—a Greek cheese appetizer, topped with rum and lit aflame), the common link is fresh ingredients, locally sourced as often as possible. The beautifully-balanced menu comes with award-winning wines, from the oakiest cabernet sauvignon to a candy-sweet orange Moscato dessert wine, all served in a wide-open rustically-affable dining space atop the first floor tasting room and gift shop. During seasonable weather, guests can swirl their vino on the winery’s outdoor patio, overlooking a scenic pond and the vast tangles of grapes on the vine. “Fun is transitive,” Alexis said. “Our staff, ourselves, we are happy to be here. We are ‘there for the party’ as much as our customers,” she added. “We’re working on making it less of a hidden gem, and more of a well-known one.”

SPOTLIGHT

SPOTLIGHT ON REGINA PRITCHETT PRESIDENT OF TURF TEAM

story: Sherry Dale, Partner - The Mettise Group / photography: Jim Felder

16 LUXIERE

SD: How did the Turf Team concept develop? RP: My brother, Jeff Davidson, started the company in 1994. The launch consisted of a lawn mower, a weed eater and a leaf blower. In 1996, I joined the company to help with accounting, scheduling and sales. It was truly a humble beginning with a lot of hustle, hard work and multi-tasking to make it all work.

SD: Describe the growth of the Company over the last few years. RP: We experienced significant growth starting in 2004, with a sharp jump in revenue during 2013 due to some large commercial contracts. Through that process, we learned that exponential growth is sometimes not the best path, especially when you value a high-quality customer experience.

I now oversee strategic direction, sales, design, marketing and general operations of the business. This allows me to combine my accounting background with my love of design and the great outdoors.

Since that time we have intentionally scaled back to a manageable growth rate which has resulted in better execution of our strategic business plan and enhanced our customer service.

SPOTLIGHT

SD: Tell me about the range of services offered. RP: We are a full-service outdoor environment company – providing design and build of swimming pools, outdoor kitchens, fire places, fire pits, pergolas, pavilions, retaining walls, patios, sidewalks, masonry, drainage, irrigation and of course, all landscape services. We also provide maintenance once the landscape install is complete. We provide services to a broad range of clients from large-scale commercial to residential. Our staff brings years of experience, and we are one of the only full service companies in Oklahoma with an International Society of Arboriculture- certified arborist on staff.

I also am a big believer in giving back and our company embraces that value. We support the YMCA athletics, Wounded Warrior and many other charitable organizations.

SD: Describe the Turf Team customer experience. RP: We produce breathtaking views and create enjoyable and functional outdoor living experiences for our customers. We pride ourselves on listening to the customer – really listening – to understand their vision for the space and their outdoor lifestyle. Our design is innovative and sophisticated with an emphasis on functionality.

SD: How do you continue to grow and develop as a leader? RP: I’m a member of the Posse, a peer advisory group for entrepreneurs and executives, facilitated by The Mettise Group. I can bring issues and challenges to the group and walk away with trusted advice from objective, experienced business owners. The group problem-solves, encourages, and holds me accountable. It’s my board of directors and plays a huge role in my life and business.

SD: What about the Turf Team culture? RP: In a word, it would be Team. We work together very well and encourage collaboration between employees, suppliers and subcontractors. I promote a family-first focus and that is deeply appreciated by the staff. We have a great work environment and encourage both personal and professional development. We average approximately 45 employees at all times. It takes time and attention to build and maintain a positive culture but it is a key driver of our success. SD: Describe your leadership style. RP: I’m tough but fair. I set goals and expectations for myself and require the same from my staff. I’ve also found that being transparent and providing a shared vision for where the company is going motivates to the team. My delegation skills are still a work in progress!

ROYAL BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION & EAST ANGLIA’S CHILDREN’S HOSPICE GALA by: Carey Sue Vega / images: provided by EACH Foundation To celebrate her 50th birthday Carey Sue Vega’s aunt surprised her with a girl’s trip to England. Although Carey Sue doesn’t turn 50 until March 2017, her aunt decided an early celebration was in order. After all a girl only turns 50 once! As part of the grand adventure, they attended the East Anglia’s Children’s Hospice (EACH) Gala Dinner at Houghton Hall located in Norfolk, England. Join us as Carey Sue shares details from her whirlwind adventure. / M O N D A Y, J U N E 2 0 /

We arrived and headed straight to the fabulous, Beaumont Hotel, charmingly filled with the owner’s personal art and antiques. It is perfectly situated in the Mayfair district, a block from Selfridges, and minutes from Mount Street, Bond Street and Hyde Park.

A post-lunch massage was the perfect way to relieve the stress of a long overseas flight. Following our relaxing massages, we spent a nice quiet evening in, and hit the ground running Tuesday morning for our whirlwind week.

Condé Nast Traveler placed The Beaumont on its annual Hot List as an ‘Urban Standout,’ as well as its Gold List in 2016, and Forbes Life called it ‘one of the hottest hotel openings in London in 2014,’ and those accolades are welldeserved.

After breakfast at the Beaumont, we walked through Hyde Park, and thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful gardens, filled with so many amazing flowers in full bloom. A Londoner mentioned that the gardens were at their finest as the Queen had just celebrated her 90th birthday the week prior.

After check-in we ate a delicious lunch in the Colony Grill, which was inspired by the clubby, sophisticated Grill Rooms popular in New York and London in the 1920s. The Colony Grill serves classic dishes and exudes oldworld glamour.

/ T U E S D A Y, J U N E 2 1 /

After enjoying the gardens, we headed to Harrods. As we were leaving the park, we heard a police whistle; the police officer was firmly shouting, “make way for the Queen’s Guard!” This was a pleasant surprise, and we stopped to allow the Queen’s Horse Guards to proceed as they headed to Buckingham Palace for the changing of the guards. As they passed, construction workers in the area stopped and removed their hard hats. It was truly a special moment. But back to Harrods. You can spend an entire day in this landmark. Harrods is known for being the leader in luxury retail, attracting customers from around the world. The iconic department store always surpasses expectation. Steeped in history, the establishment was opened by Charles Henry Harrod in 1849. It began as an East End grocer and tea merchant. After moving to Knightsbridge, the Harrods legend was born and has since remained one of the most distinguished names in the luxury industry. All the King’s Men! Next, it was on to the London Silver Vaults, which you have to see to believe!

Upon arrival, we ate lunch at the Victoria Inn, located on the property of Holkham Hall. The Inn is dog-friendly, and just about everyone had a polite dog with them.

The London Silver Vaults originally opened as the Chancery Lane Safe Deposit in 1876, renting strong rooms where Londoners could safeguard their household silver, jewelry and documents. In time, silver dealers and shops requiring secure premises for their valuable stock rented the Vaults for storage.

Then it was off to the spectacular Holkham Hall for a private tour before heading to Houghton for the EACH event. Holkham Hall is privately owned and is home to Polly and Thomas Edward Coke, the 8th Earl of Leicester.

A number of the current shop owners at the London Silver Vaults can recall visiting their grandparents storage Vaults many decades ago. With steel-lined walls nearly four feet thick, the vaults were never broken into.

Next came Houghton Hall, the private residence of Lady Rose and Lord David Cholmondeley, The Marchioness and Marquess of Cholmondeley. Lord Cholmondeley’s royal title is Lord Great Chamberlain, a position held in his family since 1780. The Lord Great Chamberlain has a major part to play in royal coronations, having the right to dress the monarch on coronation day, serving the monarch water before and after the coronation banquet, and accompanying the Queen at the State Opening of Parliament.

The original building was bomb-damaged during World War II, and re-built as retail units at the request of its many silver dealer tenants. It opened in its present format in 1953. The Vaults’ became a “must” for British and international visitors who came to buy quality antique English silver at competitive prices. In the 1950s, many American servicemen stationed in the UK bought silver here to take home to their wives and mothers. English diplomats were required to buy their silver service from the Vaults prior to an overseas posting. Film stars, rock stars and royalty have all shopped at the London Silver Vaults. Tuesday evening we ate dinner at Hawksmoor Knightsbridge, a steak and seafood restaurant, in Knightsbridge, near Harrods, and spent the evening with a dear friend from my cruise ship days.

Our driver arrived at 9am and we were off to Norfolk for the East Anglia’s Children’s Hospice (EACH) gala fundraiser.

With its splendid Palladian architecture, William Kent designs, and vast collection of paintings, sculptures, books and manuscripts, the house is a major source for academic research and has loaned paintings, furniture and manuscripts to galleries and museums around the world.

On Wednesday evening, we attended the black-tie gala fundraiser for the East Anglia Children’s Hospice (EACH), hosted by The Marquess and Marchioness of Cholmondeley. EACH Royal Patron, HRH The Duchess of Cambridge, attended along with HRH The Duke of Cambridge. Upon our arrival at Houghton, the Butler and Ladies Maids welcomed us and showed us to our rooms, where hairdressers helped us prepare for the gala. At 7pm, we could see Range Rovers lining the drive and guests arriving, so downstairs we went! Our hosts Lady Rose and Lord David Cholmondeley were so gracious and kind and made us feel truly welcome in their magnificent home. Champagne was offered as we made our way to the back lawn where we met other guests from China, New York, Russia and England. The Duke and Duchess arrived at 7:15pm; upon their arrival they met with the Michelin Star chefs who were preparing our meal. Each of the five courses was created and cooked by five world-renowned chefs: Galton Blackiston, Sat Bains, Claude Bosik, Tom Kerridge, and Mark Edwards. After meeting the chefs, the Duke and Duchess were escorted onto the lawn to be introduced to the guests. We assumed it would be a formal receiving line, but it was an intimate atmosphere with committee members escorting the Duke and Duchess around making introductions. Prince William asked if it was our first time to England. My sister said yes, it was her first time but not for me; he then asked about my previous visit to England so I mentioned how I sailed from Dover for a few seasons. With a quizzical look on his face he said, “you sailed out of Dover?” I explained how I worked on cruise ships for years and he whole-heartedly laughed saying, “oh wow, I can’t imagine what a fun experience that was.”

Next we were introduced to HRH Catherine, The Duchess of Cambridge, she asked about Oklahoma so we were quick to share all of the highlights about what a wonderful city we live in and all Oklahoma City has to offer (we were doing our best to sell her on a visit to see for herself). She then asked what we do. We both shared with her brief snippets about our families, careers, and volunteer involvement. She was very gracious and seemed genuinely interested in what we had to say. Before heading in to dinner, critically acclaimed author Anthony Horowitz, who wrote the latest 007 James Bond novel Trigger Mortis, gave a speech from the balcony to welcome everyone and set the stage for the dinner. As we made our way to the tables, I was thrilled to find I was seated at the Duke and Duchess’s table. During the first course, formal dinner conversation rules were in full effect as the Duchess was speaking to the guest on her left, the Duke followed suit, and all other guests fell into conversation with their tablemate. After the first course, the Duchess ‘turned’ her conversation to the guest on her right, so we all followed suit. Our Aunt became ill after arriving at Houghton and had to miss the gala, staying in her room upstairs. When the Duke found out, he offered to say hello to her. I immediately said, yes! One of the committee members made arrangements to collect my aunt and meet us downstairs after dessert. At the conclusion of the meal, I found myself running off with the Duke and his security guard to meet my aunt! The Duke’s kindness and initiative in wishing to speak with her directly turned the whole debacle into a memorable experience for all. As part of the fundraiser, we had the rare opportunity to stay overnight at Houghton as guests of the Cholmondeleys. Thursday morning we enjoyed breakfast in the family’s private dining room, where we learned first-hand about Lord Cholmondeley’s royal role as The Lord Great Chamberlain. On our way back to London, we stopped at the Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial which is a beautiful memorial to the American servicemen and women who died in World War II. Thursday was the big Brexit vote and the political climate was fascinating. The old adage of ‘don’t discuss politics’ definitely did not apply! Everyone was passionately discussing Brexit.

/ F R I D A Y, J U N E 2 4 /

Our morning paper headline read, ‘Closest call for Britain; looks like Remain will edge it.’ After breakfast we met our guide for the next two days, Janine, who was telling us the news about the results of the vote to leave the European Union. We were a bit puzzled until she told us that the morning paper jumped the gun, and gone to print before the vote was in. Our first stop for the day was a private tour of Kensington Palace. We toured the magnificent King’s and Queen’s State Apartments, and after the tour, we viewed the current exhibit ‘Fashion Rules Restyled.’ The exhibit explores how three royal women, HM Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Margaret and Diana, Princess of Wales navigated the fashion ‘rules’ defined by their royal duties, in their own unique style. Next, we headed to Hampton Court Palace & Gardens. Hampton Court Palace was Henry VIII’s favorite royal residence and it is easy to see why. The Palace is breathtaking and is filled with fabulous furnishings, paintings and tapestries collected by royal occupants over the centuries. Friday night we enjoyed the West End production of “Funny Girl” in the historic Savoy Theatre, which has been hosting productions and stage shows since 1881. The Savoy is known for premiering quality drama, opera and musicals, and has enjoyed a varied history.

/ S AT U R D A Y, J U N E 2 5 / After breakfast, Janine picked us up for an outing to Bath, which made for an enjoyable last day of our adventure. Janine took us on a walking tour of the beautiful architecture, and to look at the famous Roman Baths, built in 60AD. The Romans built a magnificent temple and bathing complex around Britain’s only hot spring that still flows with natural hot water. Nowadays you can’t bathe in the water but you can still see the water’s source and the Roman ruins of the temple, which was once the hub of everyday life. The museum has an interactive element with Roman-costumed characters engaging visitors for a creative educational twist. For lunch, we enjoyed The Circus, off the beaten path and away from the hustle and bustle of the busy tourist areas. Another friend from my cruise ship days joined us for lunch. Lunch was delicious, the service was prompt and efficient, and the atmosphere made for a delightful meal. On our drive back to London, we visited Castle Combe Village where Dr. Doolittle (the original) and War Room were filmed. Castle Combe makes you feel as though time stands still and that you’ve been thrown into an old English movie. Every single aspect of our whirlwind seven days in England was absolutely fantastic. We’re already plotting a return adventure across the pond!

Look sharp while traveling by sticking to dark colors like navy, black or gray. Avoid materials, like linen that wrinkles easily. A stretch denim with a deconstructed soft blazer is comfortably stylish, creating a transition from an am flight to a fun night out. The athleisure trend is spiking and there are so many options to choose from! With ergonomics and moisture-wicking characteristics, these high tech materials keep you looking and feeling good. Black or gray lace-up leather trainers are versatile and can be worn throughout the day or evening. Toss a multi-tasking oil in your bag for easy grooming!

Look chic as you board with these on-trend pieces! Dress in layers that stay put! A bodysuit and legging/stretch denim will make you feel comfortable yet effortlessly chic. Add a flattering cape or cardigan for a no-fuss layer that can double as a blanket. Lucky for us, menswear inspired footwear and loafers are a huge trend this season and are sprouting up everywhere! They are easy to slip on and off as you power through security and long flights. Like a bit of height? Go with a bootie that has a strong heel and grommet detail! Reduce static and dry skin by packing an all in one moisturizer like Darphin’s Revitalizing Oil that can be used on the face, hair and body. Protect your skin by reapplying sunscreen or a tinted moisturizer throughout your travel day.

FOREST CREEK ESTATES LIFE AT ITS MOST EXQUISITE AND BEAUTIFUL by: Christine Eddington / photography: Steve Voelker

W

hen Gwen Leclerc speaks about Forest Creek Estates, it’s

really her father’s legacy she’s talking about. Forest Creek Estates is the beautifully exclusive development that is the focus of her attention as of late, and her pride in the remarkable project is tinged with the poignancy of loss. She is finishing a project that she began with her beloved father, James Edwin Harper, who passed away in 2007. Forest Creek Estates is named for her paternal grandfather, Forest Edwin Harper. Leclerc and her family live in one of the three homes currently completed in Forest Creek Estates. There are just 41 lots available, ranging from one to three acres, starting around $100,000, on a quintessentially beautiful, slightly wild piece of property at Sorghum Mill Road, between Midwest Boulevard and Air Depot, which when fully developed will have an almost European feel. LUXIERE 27

The Leclerc’s home is incredible. The late interior designer, Steve Callahan, was the driving force in the look and feel of the home, inside and out. Callahan had worked on several projects with Leclerc and her father, and was a good friend. His impeccable eye enabled him to create the plan that seamlessly blended the Leclercs’ aesthetic with her dad’s hunting trophies and other objects. Callahan passed away during construction, and the Leclercs asked Sees Design to finish the project. As Leclerc says, “They executed Callahan’s vision, and added a new spin with some new, eclectic pieces. Sees blew us away. They really did take it to another level.”

“It’s hard to describe how beautiful and tranquil Forest Creek Estates is. It’s all about the natural beauty of being outdoors. Sunsets are fantastic and the stars in the night sky are unobstructed. When we are in town, we are out here, in our home, ninety percent of the time,” Leclerc said. James Harper was a diverse businessman, and was active in the oil and gas business, investments, and he also maintained real estate holdings. Gwen was involved in his projects, and worked side-byside with her father over the years. Together, the two developed a project, the Ranch, which is now known as Iron Horse Ranch. “We sold that, and he decided to do one more project. I worked with my dad from start to finish, from the concept to planning to naming the streets,” Leclerc said.

The natural beauty of Forest Creek Estates will inspire you to dream big.

Her vision for Forest Creek Estates is a bit of an homage to the neighborhoods of her childhood: Crown Heights and Nichols Hills. “My idea is to allow people to choose whatever architectural style they love, to have a wide variety of styles: a contemporary home next to traditional next to Mediterranean, and for people to build what they really want.

LUXIERE 29

L U X I E R E F E AT U R E D E V E L O P M E N T

Her own home is a beautiful combination of architectural styles, impossible to label. “There is a mix of influences from contemporary to Santa Fe, with a dash of Andalusian Farmhouse,” she said. And she’s lovingly incorporated her father’s hunting trophies in a sculptural way that celebrates the beauty of the animal and the memory of her dad. “Some of my father’s trophies date back to 1972, to trips he took with my mother. I am not a hunter, and dad used to ask me what we were going to do with his trophies when he was gone, and I’d say ‘well I don’t want them,’ but after he passed, I couldn’t get rid of them.” “The property that has become Forest Creek Estates has been in our family for 40 years, and we chose to build on it because it’s so beautiful and a fitting tribute to my beloved family.”
