JOY, HOPE & GENEROSITY A Note from the Publisher There are always plenty of things to disagree about, and it may seem as though they are on the increase. I would politely suggest that what matters more to the health of an individual, a city or a nation are the parts of the human experience that we have in common. Things like joy, hope and generosity of spirit. When you begin to look for these qualities in others, the world becomes a warmer and more gracious place. The more you look, the more you see. At Luxiere, we believe in sharing the beautifully common and magnificently uncommon. We bring you creators and collaborators, dreamers and change agents, all of whom make our world a little rosier, more artful, kinder or lovelier. It seems particularly appropriate at this time of year, which is the Holy Season for mine and many other faiths, and the time many families gather together from near and far. In this issue, we’ve gathered beautiful people, places and ideas for holiday giving. Starting on page 21, we’ll travel to Portugal behind the lens of globetrotting photographer J.D. Merryweather, and soak in the sights, sounds and warm culture of the country that shares the Iberian Peninsula with Spain. You’ll meet this issue’s Woman of Influence, Jenn Winton, who has created a nonprofit called U!Shine, on page 8. She is dedicated to taking the stigma out of talking about mental health issues among college students. Her own bouts with anxiety and depression left her committed to making discussing our mental health as easy as talking about how to treat a cold.

This past fall, a newcomer to Oklahoma City decided to launch a brand-new charity event, the likes of which we’d never seen before. Happily, the first annual Charity Polo Match was a smashing success despite a challenge from Mother Nature, and it raised more than $30,000 for Smart Start Central Oklahoma. Learn more about it on page 12. We’ve officially entered the season of giving. Finding meaningful, beautiful gifts for the people we love is a gift in and of itself, but when options abound, narrowing them down can be a challenge. In our holiday gifting guide, we’ve curated a selection of ideas that will surely spur your imagination, all of them from exceptional, locally-owned shops and boutiques. Finally, as always, we hope you find our collection of homes and properties inspirational and aspirational. Life is luxurious in Oklahoma, and we’d love to help guide you in turning your new-home dreams into vivid reality. Life is sweeter when we share it with one another. We hope sharing in the stories we’ve brought you in this issue have brought a little beauty into your day. With warmth, blessings and gratitude,

Stacy D. Johnson

WOMEN OF INFLUENCE

WOMAN OF INFLUENCE Some people endure a traumatic experience and immediately try to forget it the moment they’re through it. Other people, people like Jenn Winton, endure a trial in their lives, learn to overcome it, then decide that others might need help, too, and offer it as quickly as possible. They open their hearts, lace up their shoes and run toward those in need. Jenn Winton’s heart is wide open and she’s taking the stigma out of things like anxiety and depression on college campuses with an approachable, studentfriendly and low-key series of programs through the nonprofit she founded. U!Shine is dedicated to the mental and emotional health of young people. “The idea to start a nonprofit came from my own personal struggle with anxiety and depression. For me, it took a really holistic approach focused on mind, body and spirit to find healing and adjust. I learned, for example, that I needed to make some dietary changes because some of my ‘stuff ’ came from thyroid issues,” Winton says. Winton has had three intense bouts with anxiety and depression, and each of them taught her something more about how to heal and, ultimately, shine her light and tell her story for the benefit of others. But those gifts came after digging deep through some painful, dark and difficult times. “After my second big struggle, I learned so much. Available resources from the state were so limited, and I realized that we cannot wait until people are in crisis to offer help with mental wellbeing.” The more she learned, the more convinced she became that she had to act. Her research yielded some startling facts. “The number of students who struggle with handling the pressures of school is rising. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among college students, and it’s the leading cause among girls ages 15-19. That was eye-opening, and that’s how I landed on the age group we serve.” U!Shine programming is currently designed for high school and college students, and Jenn and her Executive Deputy Director Vivian Hoffmeister are proud of their progress. “Schools and colleges are doing a wonderful job with suicide prevention campaigns and that is such a big step. We thought, though, why wait until young people feel done with life to help? Why not step back a few paces and start the conversations earlier: What is anxiety? What is OCD? When students have heard about these things and talked about them, it’s not as embarrassing to ask for help,” she says. Winton’s favorite quote, attributed to Ernest Hemingway, encapsulates her philosophy: “We are all broken; that’s how the light gets in.” She adds “The cracks are also how we let our light shine out.”

Oklahoma Christian University has been the pilot program for U!Shine. Winton and her husband Matt met there as students and married at the tender age of 21. Since then, the pair has embarked on no small number of adventures including homeschooling their four daughters. Matt is an attorney and owns the All Hat Cattle Company and Ranch. He and Jenn live in Luther, where nearly three years ago they opened 116 Market & Table, a farm-to-table coffee shop and restaurant on Main Street, and it has helped to revitalize the postage-stamp sized downtown. “116 was really Matt’s dream,” Winton says. “It’s a place for the community to gather. We are committed to offering as much local and healthy food as possible. It’s proven to be what Matt set out for it to be: a true community table.” Jenn’s dream is unfolding with each student for whom U!Shine makes a difference. There are two programs offered currently: U!Shine Conversations and U!Shine’s Healthy Habits. Conversations is a series of relaxed, inclusive overviews of a broad range of topics including Anxiety: Breaking Down the Freak Out; Everyday Activities that Boost Mental Health; Caring for a Friend with a Mental Illness; Resilience and Grit; and Depression: Blue is Not Your Color. “Oklahoma Christian University has been an amazing partner. This is our third year there, and we think of it as our base. Each year, we have a U!Shine chapel at the beginning of the year and students have told us that when they see the U!Shine logo on the posters and around campus, it’s like a sigh of relief,” she says. Spirituality is an important component of the U!Shine philosophy. U!Shine now offers high school-appropriate programming at Oklahoma Christian Academy and just launched the program at Lipscomb University in Nashville. Across the pond, U!Shine now offers programming in Austria, initiated by Holly Kooi, an Oklahoma Christian University alum living in Vienna, who now serves as that city’s director. Managing growth and planning new offerings for new audiences will keep Winton and her small band of heroes busy for the foreseeable future. She’s currently adapting programming for even younger students and hopes to be ready to take U!Shine to junior high and middle schools in the future. Winton sums it up: “It’s so important for people to be plugged into the conversation. Physical illness has no stigma, neither should mental illness. We help bridge that gap and address the mind, the body and the spirit.”

CHARITY POLO MATCH

story: Christine Eddington / photography: François-Xavier Chenhalls-Walker The story of the first annual Oklahoma City Charity Polo Match almost sounds like a fairy tale. Founder Adria Dunn, whose career in banking has taken her around the globe, now works in private banking for Morgan Stanley. She is a newcomer to Oklahoma, but has spent the past decade working and living in exotic locations around the globe, planning beautiful events for her high-level clients. “I noticed there was no grand polo event here,” Dunn says, “I love polo. I grew up around horses, and I spent the last ten years in Southeast Asia, where I really developed my love of the sport.” One thing led to another, and on one recent weekend in early September, Oklahoma Cityans came together for a first-of-itskind event unlike any we’ve ever seen before: a charity polo match. It sold out. There were two components that Dunn knew she needed to ensure her event’s success. “A high-profile guest of honor was important.

12 LUXIERE

We selected Bill Cameron, chairman of American Fidelity, because we’d heard so many wonderful stories about his involvement in the community and his warmth,” Dunn says. Dunn knew she needed a charity component for her event to truly succeed. Although charity polo matches are new to Oklahoma, they are held at some of the most legendary locations around the country and the globe, like The Hamptons, Palm Beach, Singapore, and Gloucestershire, England. After researching nonprofits in Oklahoma City, Dunn determined that Smart Start Central Oklahoma was her ideal beneficiary. A phone call and a presentation later, Smart Start was on board, its staff and volunteers feeling a bit like Cinderella. And, of course, she needed a polo field. David Ragland, founder of the OKC Polo Club, came on board next, and Dunn suddenly had a place to host the event. Ragland says, “The event was very successful, under the circumstances. Our match was rained out, but we were able to give a demonstration, and everyone seemed to have a really good time”. The fundraising for Smart Start Central Oklahoma was also successful. “It was an honor to be chosen as the nonprofit recipient of such a unique and fun event for our community. The $31,000 raised for Smart Start Central Oklahoma will be used to support parents in their most important role by connecting them to the resources they need and want for their children. Empowered parents improve the opportunities for their babies and children, changing their young lives forever. I can’t think of a better gift for our community,” says Stacy Dykstra, executive director of Smart Start Central Oklahoma. Dunn’s enthusiasm and dedication to her fledgling event continues to soar. “It was wonderful. We sold out. Despite the rain, of our nearly 300 RSVPs, only about 40 chose to stay home that day. We are thrilled and already thinking about next year!”

Ba t h i ng : a g i ft Bathing is about the most ancient form of self-care there is. From the baths in Rome to the soaking tubs in downtown OKC, the benefits of soaking are well known. The act of bathing is more than just a simple clean-off from the day. It can be a sacred act, not just for the body, but for the mind, the aura, and the spirit.

The utmost intentions must be set: Create a sanctuary - how do you want to feel? Are you releasing? Are you gathering? Are you soothing? Spend a moment setting the space - White noise, relaxing music, fav tunes, silence? I enjoy the warm glow of candlelight, or sometimes total darkness. Cleanse the space with smoke free room spray, light an incense stick, or use a blend of oils. Each layer of creating this space speaks to a sense, reprogramming your mind: you are worth this time, this detail, this care.

Relaxing Mineral Bath: from Whole Beauty Most of us are lacking magnesium due to depleted foods, a result of overtaxed soil beds. Magnesium is essential for healthy skin and hair, aids in sleep, and can promote a profound sense of calm. 1 cup magnesium flakes 10 drops of a relaxing essential oil (chamomile or lavender) Fill the tube with water that is the ideal temperature for you. Add magnesium and essential oil before you step in. Soak for 20 minutes or more. Other great bathing options: clearing baths, awakening baths, balancing baths, beauty potion baths.

Tip: wait 30 minutes after eating. Bathing lowers your body temperature; since digestions takes a lot of blood flow, it’s best to wait a bit. Preggo mamas: soaking is totally suggested; just don’t allow water to raise your body temp above 102 degrees. (With the growth of urban living, if you don’t have a soaking tub, Udander is a great option for a quiet full soak.)

Oh s h& *! I have a holiday par ty, a ha p py hour, an event go to kit: Tis the season of after work happy hours. Throw on the heels and low messy bun! I love getting truly dolled up for an event, but some days it just doesn’t happen. So here is my car (while parked!) mirror makeup go-tos. Keys: glow, pop of color, and reduce redness. GLOW: carry a face mist or hydrosol in your handbag. It reactivates your foundation and gives the skin a health glow. For extra push, you can press on a face oil right on top of your morning makeup. POP OF COLOR: I love a good lip, red, pink, nude, or orange. It’s a total pick-me-up and you can use your fingers to press a little on the apples of your cheeks. DON’T LOOK TIRED! Use a little concealer under the eyes, around the nose. Anywhere you carry redness naturally, try to neutralize. BREATH: Nothing radiates beauty like calm confidence. When going from one thing to the next, sit in your car, take 10-15 minutes to breath, and reflect on where you have just been, expressing gratitude and releasing what didn’t serve you. This pause allows you to enter your next engagement with a clean slate, and you don’t have that mental build-up at the end of a long day. There are also many great apps that can help if that is more your speed. The Calm App is a great tool. You just breath. Simple as that.

Im m u n i ty su p por t + w hen you get s ick Immunity protection is key to surviving the cold season safely. Since we are naturally getting less vitamin D, make sure to lean into the self-care practices that keep your body detoxifying and running smoothly. Think dry brushing, oil pulling, lymphatic massage, hydration, steam sessions etc. Adding an elixir is a great way to get extra support, just a few drops under the tongue. Elderberry has been used for decades; it’s an antiviral, and it’s adaptogenic and high in vitamin C. Propolis is another great addition. It has germ fighting properties, 300 vitamins, and mineral compounds to reduce free radical damage and stress. It’s a travel kit must. Raw Manuka honey, medicinal honey, has high levels of antibacterial and enzyme properties. Switch out sugar for honey in your daily beverages for an immunity boost. Rescue formulas can be taken multiple times a day to make it through body trauma and illnesses. Dr Bach’s formula and First Aid Kit are a few of my favs. Bonus: they’re kiddo safe!

The three-hour train to Porto, 200 miles up the coast, rolls into the city across a tall bridge, providing a spectacular introduction to the lay of the land. Rising from the banks of the Douro River, Porto slopes gradually upward, revealing its density and splendor. I got a strong feeling that my inner oenophile had found a new home! Researching Porto was the primary reason I wanted to visit Portugal. The region’s wines are famous, but the city also has numerous architectural gems, including the Torre dos Clergies (Clerics Tower), an Italian design baroque church from the mid-1700s; the futuristic Casa da Musica completed in 2005, designed by Dutch architect Rem Koolhass, who dropped this spaceship on the city; numerous cathedrals clad in “azulejos”, the beautiful blue and white tiles crafted in Portugal. Specifically, the Church of St. Ildefonso, completed in 1739, has a spectacular azulejos exterior. My love of bridges was satisfied by the Dom Luis I bridge that spans the Douro and connects the city to the south Vila Nova de Gaia district, the location of all the port lodges. The lovely city of Porto is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

I spent the better part of a day “studying” port wine during a private tour and tasting at Cockburn’s, one of the oldest lodges on the south bank. The lodge has an extensive cooperage and it was fascinating to see how they maintain and repair their barrel stock - some being hundreds of years old and in continuous use. Walking the cobbled floors of the lodges, I could feel the history of the surroundings and visualize the precious white and red liquids resting peacefully – becoming a complex sipping wine to be shared around the world. Port winemaking in Porto and the Douro Valley is a unique industry, and I am planning a return trip to study it from the soil to the glass. Like Lisbon, Porto offers incredible dining. I’ve eaten various octopus dishes all around the world, and by far my favorite experience is at ZA, a little place up the street from my Airbnb on the city’s north side. The Portuguese love garlic, as do I, and I started my meal at ZA with a house specialty, prawns broiled in garlic. They arrived still sizzling from the pan. The owner is the host and waiter, and his wife the chef; the three of us became quick friends, as I wanted to try the whole menu. We decided on octopus paired with the region’s Vallado vinho tinto (red wine). Served grilled over boiled potatoes and a simple olive oil and garlic sauce, the dish screamed flavor and tenderness. Dessert was a cheese plate paired with a few samplings of port, eventually leading to the three of us sharing a bottle after they closed. Perfection! Fourteen days flew by and I promise I left a few unopened bottles of wine behind. Foodwise, I barely got past the seafood, and Portugal has a huge list of unique delights to be discovered and eleven wine regions, including Maderia and the Azores Islands. I still have a lot of exploring, dining, and tasting to do in Portugal, and I’ve already done the wine research!!

HONOR:

Hundreds Gather to Honor Sue Ann Arnall, Ronnie Irani and Richard Tanenbaum

by Christine Eddington

Oklahoma City University’s Meinders School of Business staged its 32nd Annual Oklahoma Commerce and Industry Hall of Honor awards luncheon in late October and honored three remarkable people whose careers are vastly different but who share relentless drive, keen intellect and humble humor. Sue Ann Arnall, president of the Arnall Family Foundation, received the Lifetime Achievement Award; Richard Tanenbaum, CEO of Gardner Tanenbaum Holdings, was honored with the Chairman’s Award; and Ronnie Irani, president and CEO of RKI Energy Resources, received the President’s Award.

Arnall obtained a BA in economics and a JD from the University of Tulsa, where she serves as trustee. She is a member of the Oklahoma Bar Association, serves on the board of directors of the Central Oklahoma Humane Society, Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics, and Allied Arts, and is an executive in residence at Oklahoma City University. As she took the stage to accept her award, she joked with audience member and Meinders School of Business namesake Herman Meinders. “I’ve sat with Herman at this luncheon many times, and when an awardee begins to speak, he looks at his watch. After about three minutes, his foot begins to tap. Herman, don’t worry – I’ve got it,” she said, to laughter.

“It is an honor for Oklahoma City University to recognize three of Oklahoma’s most visionary servant leaders. Sue Ann Arnall, Richard Tanenbaum and Ronnie Irani have had a profound impact on our community. Part of the mission of our Hall of Honor is to provide OCU students with role models in the surrounding business community. This year’s inductees are exceptional role models and give tremendous inspiration to the next generation of business leaders,” said OCU President Martha Burger. Burger was featured in Luxiere Issue No. 11.

Richard Tanenbaum is the principal owner of Gardner Tanenbaum Holdings. His more than 35 years of experience in commercial real estate includes development, acquisition and brokerage. Prior to entering the real estate business, he owned and operated more than 18 restaurants in Texas, including the Atchafalaya River Front Café.

Sue Ann Arnall, proudly featured on the cover of Luxiere’s Issue No. 14, is an energy industry veteran who created and managed natural gas and oil marketing departments during her 20-year career in the field. She pioneered numerous transportation opportunities and exchange agreements with major U.S. pipelines, trucking companies, railroads, and refineries, and also managed commodity futures-trading.

As CEO, Tanenbaum has vastly expanded the asset base of Garner Tanenbaum Holdings’ commercial portfolio and has increased the company’s capabilities and expertise in different types of construction, including industrial, office, retail and multi-family properties. Tanenbaum has completed over 35 projects totaling more than $500,000,000, making Garner Tanenbaum Holdings one of the largest developers in Oklahoma.

Arnall is the president of the Arnall Family Foundation and four other entities, under the umbrella of Essay Management Services, LLC. Her foundation is dedicated to filling gaps in services for the most vulnerable, children and animals.

In his boisterous, upbeat, and sometimes emotional acceptance speech, Tanenbaum encouraged the audience members to support arts and cultural nonprofits, and paid tribute to his family and beloved wife, Glenna, whom he referred to lovingly as “the one and only, the love of my life.”

SPOTLIGHT

Tanenbaum is a member of the Commercial Real Estate Council, a board member of the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce and cochairman of the chamber’s Total Resource Development Campaign. He and Glenna left the luncheon a tad early, because they were hosting a special dinner for the Chamber that evening…in Amsterdam.

Ronnie Irani is president and CEO of RKI Energy Resources, LLC, a privately held company headquartered in Oklahoma City. Prior to forming RKI Energy Resources, Irani was president and CEO of RKI Exploration & Production, which he had founded in 2005 and built into a multi-billiondollar enterprise prior to its sale in 2015.

Irani sprinkled his remarks with poignant memories of devouring novels as a small boy growing up in India, dreaming big dreams of one day working at a job that required a suit and a briefcase, and maybe even having his own office. He honed his American English as a college student at the University of Oklahoma by watching soap operas in the student union during his class breaks, laughing that he was usually the only young man in the room. Irani has more than 37 years of experience in the oil and natural gas industry. Prior to forming the RKI companies, Irani was senior vice president and general manager with Dominion Resources, a Fortune 200 company. Prior to Dominion, he served in senior executive positions for Louis Dreyfus Natural Gas Corporation and Woods Petroleum Corporation, both of which are NYSE companies headquartered in Oklahoma City. Irani earned his BS in chemistry from Bombay University, India, in 1977. He also holds a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in petroleum engineering from University of Oklahoma and an MBA from Oklahoma City University. Irani has also completed the Executive Management Program offered by the IPAA in conjunction with Harvard University. “The Oklahoma Commerce & Industry Hall of Honor brings together business and community leaders who share a vision and a passion for moving Oklahoma forward. Each year, it is a privilege to hear the stories of our inductees. Our stellar class of honorees this year, including Richard Tanenbaum, Sue Ann Arnall, and Ronnie K. Irani, have made significant contributions to our local community and we are so pleased to induct them into the 2018 Hall of Honor,” said Meinders School of Business Dean Steve Agee. “The students of the Meinders School of Business are the beneficiaries of this event, which provides scholarship support for the next generation of business leaders. We appreciate all of our sponsors and everyone who helped make our 32nd Hall of Honor event a meaningful celebration,” Agee added.

Luxiere congratulates the distinguished recipients of the Oklahoma City University’s Meinders School of Business 2018 Hall of Honor Awards.

Vintage Wine Bar | Tulsa, Ok

When in Tulsa

Our goal is to take the pretentiousness out of wine, making it approachable by anyone that walks through our doors. We are a small independent business, and we drive our wine program on supporting small independent wineries. Since 2004, Tulsa and the greater Oklahoma area have recognized us for our hospitality and regional wines. We have been recognized every year by many publications throughout the state for either best “Wine List” in Tulsa or Oklahoma or best “Wine Bar” in Tulsa or Oklahoma. You are a guest in our home and we live to serve everyone that comes in.

Vintage Wine Bar is built on “hospitality first”, starting with the ambiance. Stepped pale-pink walls, brass lights and velvety benches are among the decorative art deco style details at Vintage, which Brooklyn-based Workstead created inside an old brothel in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Furnishings were sourced from a mix of American contemporary and antique dealers, including Los Angeles-based brand Lawson Fenning, specialists in modern-vintage furniture. Plush furnishings and brass and wooden details in the bar are a tribute to the 1920s and 1930s architecture in the surrounding area.

SHOP LOC AL

S H O P L O C A L F O R U N I Q U E G I F T S T H I S H O L I D AY S E A S O N By Kati Hanna, Partner with The Mettise Group If you’re like me, you search high and low to find the perfect gifts for Christmas that are both meaningful and unique. This year, you don’t have to search very far to find these gifts. We’ve made holiday shopping easy with amazing gifts from four Oklahoma City based businesses. Whether you are looking for a gift that delivers all year long, one with meaning and impact, an unforgettable experience, or something truly thoughtful for that busy person in your life, we’ve got you covered this holiday season. My four great finds for this holiday season are: Roast Scout, a locally owned company that offers a monthly coffee subscription. With

your subscription, you receive a bag of freshly roasted coffee each month delivered directly to your home or office. Plenty Mercantile with retail shops in Automobile Alley and Edmond sells responsibly produced products from all over the world. The Escape OKC is Oklahoma City’s original escape room. This amazing experience can be shared with your family, friends, groups, co-workers, and is the perfect place for holiday parties. Finally, Clean Slate Kitchen provides daily or weekly freshly cooked meals for the busy person in your life. I wanted to learn more about our remarkable local finds, so I asked each owner to tell us a little more about their company.

P L E N T Y M E R C A N T I L E My next great find is locally owned and operated Plenty Mercantile. If you are wanting a gift with meaning, Plenty Mercantile is your shop. Plenty Mercantile’s owners, Traci Walton and Brittney Matlock have created a local shopping experience that offers curated and vetted sustainable products from around the world. Most of their products have their own unique stories and many help support impactful missions with each purchase. This year, Plenty Mercantile is offering corporate and personal holiday gift boxes containing a collection of meaningful unique items to make shopping even easier.

R O A S T S C O U T My first find is Roast Scout, a locally owned monthly coffee subscription company. Roast Scout is the brainchild of Clint Williams and his partner, Jeremy Sanchez. As a current subscriber, I can say without a doubt, I’ve tasted some of the best coffee from around the United States. Each month, I receive a new bag of coffee from a U.S. roaster and have the opportunity to learn about the coffee and the roaster. With my first month’s subscription, I sipped coffee from Loyal Coffee based in Colorado Springs, CO. It was their TanzaniaMwalyego coffee. I learned that this coffee is grown by a co-op of 150 farmers, and it had flavors of strawberry, plum and pecan to light up my palette.

HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE IDEA TO START YOUR BUSINESS? Our other business, Clover Partners, is a digital branding studio, and over the years we’ve been fortunate to work with a number of coffee shops and coffee roasters. What we came to realize is that there is so much great coffee out there that the average enthusiast will likely never get to experience due to the producers’ regionally limited marketing and distribution. Knowing how much we love traveling and trying new coffee, we felt this was a problem we could tackle. Less than 6 months from its inception, we launched Roast Scout as our own take on subscription coffee. Coffee Discovery.

HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE IDEA TO START YOUR BUSINESS? In 2012, we noticed a gap in the marketplace for curated and vetted sustainable goods that did not sacrifice aesthetic. Simultaneously, the look of an “intentional lifestyle” began to trend but it wasn’t substantiated by intentional products. We wanted to help close that gap by bringing products to market that are in fact enhanced by their intentional design and fabrication, in an environment where families felt cared for and welcome. WHAT MAKES OKLAHOMA A GREAT PLACE TO OWN A BUSINESS? The local business community in Oklahoma City is unlike anything we could have imagined - it is incredibly supportive and collaborative. We were welcomed into the city with open arms by other retailers and local businesses when we opened our doors. That support system has been a key pillar in any success and growth PLENTY has had. TELL US ABOUT YOUR PRODUCT AND HOW IT MAKES A UNIQUE HOLIDAY GIFT. It is PLENTY’s mission to source current yet timeless products that are also responsibly produced. Our product curation allows your purchase to extend beyond the person receiving the gift by supporting sustainable design and production practices. For example, when you purchase a ONECORD bracelet, your purchase also supports the company’s mission to assist single parents by providing aid for childcare costs. Stop by our two convenient locations Downtown OKC & Spring Creek Plaza in Edmond or order online at plentymercantile.com.

WHAT MAKES OKLAHOMA A GREAT PLACE TO OWN A BUSINESS? The people are just fantastic, and the entrepreneurial spirit runs deep here. There is a huge support for small business, and we’ve enjoyed getting to share our idea with friends and family and watching our idea take flight. TELL US ABOUT YOUR PRODUCT AND HOW IT MAKES A UNIQUE HOLIDAY GIFT. We believe that a lot of the joy of coffee is the experience of trying something new and exciting. We love traveling to new places and dropping in on the local coffee shops to see what they have to offer. Roast Scout is our effort to recreate that serendipitous discovery without having to leave your house. We find remarkable small-batch coffee from independent roasters all over the country and deliver something new to our members each month. Purchase a coffee subscription or gift card online at roastscout.com. Want your coffee in time for Christmas? Join by December 5.

C L E A N S L AT E K I TC H E N If you are like me, trying to decide what to cook for dinner during the week can often be the most stressful part of the day. Torry Leonard started Clean Slate Kitchen for busy families like mine. Torry’s meals are healthy and of the highest quality ingredients. A gift card for Clean Slate Kitchen not only gives the gift of food but also the gift of time to focus on other things besides cooking and cleaning.

WHAT MAKES CLEAN SLATE KITCHEN A UNIQUE HOLIDAY GIFT AND WHAT TYPE OF FOOD DO YOU OFFER?

Clean Slate Kitchen is a very personal gift. Giving the gift of food and time conveys to the person receiving a very deep level of thought and caring. When you give the gift of prepared meals that are nutrient-dense and high quality, it says to the receiver that you respect their health, time, and happiness. We frequently are honored with the task of preparing meals custom fit for new mothers, busy families and patients recovering from surgery. It relieves both their care givers and their partners from worrying about a trip to the store, preparing, cooking, and cleaning up a mess. Everyone gets to enjoy a meal and submerse themselves in quiet or conversation without the hassle and mess of planning, shopping, or cooking a meal. HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE IDEA TO START YOUR BUSINESS?

I started Clean Slate Kitchen because as a young working professional starting a lifestyle transformation, I desperately needed the services I offered, and couldn’t find anyone. When I asked the others participating in the transformations as well, they had the same complaint! These were very busy, driven, successful women, trying to find the time to feed themselves and their families, and to maintain and meet the expectations of a lifestyle transformation program. They allowed me into their lives and their kitchens to prepare food for them as a means for extra income and thus evolved Clean Slate Kitchen.

E S C A P E O K C Finally, we all have people in our lives that are hard to buy for. I’ve found that giving an amazing experience as a gift is always a hit. This year, I was excited to personally experience The Escape OKC during a corporate outing and knew it would be the perfect gift this holiday season. My team laughed, worked together and had the best time trying to escape our room within the allotted hour. This experience is fun for all ages and any type of group.

TELL US ABOUT THE ESCAPE OKC AND WHAT MAKES IT A UNIQUE HOLIDAY GIFT?

Sharing! The holiday season is an incredibly lonely time for some. My husband and I always find ways to give back to the community. We take time to donate toys, clothes, and miscellaneous items to local shelters as well as make sure our kids understand how important it is to share with the community.

The Escape OKC offers people a chance to gift an experience rather than a traditional physical gift. Escape games are a great way to spend time with family, friends, or colleagues and are a perfect gift for the person in your life that has everything. Where else can you spend an hour connecting with your group uninterrupted by cell phones?

To purchase, submit an email online at cleanslatekitchen.com.

HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE IDEA TO START YOUR BUSINESS?

We take pride in ensuring each meal is customized for each individual client.

The Escape OKC was the first escape room brought to Oklahoma City. Founder and owner, Andrew Gipson, was traveling abroad when he played an escape room in Belfast. After researching and finding there were only three escape room companies in the United States in 2014, Gipson knew he had found his niche. Now this industry is one of the fastest growing industries, and Gipson continues to offer unique, one-of-a-kind experiences in each of his escape rooms with his in-house design team.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO FOR THE CHRISTMAS SEASON?

WHAT MAKES OKLAHOMA A GREAT PLACE TO OWN A BUSINESS?

The community. Oklahoma City is incredibly receptive to supporting local business and has several organizations like the Uptown 23rd Street District and Keep It Local that are designed to support unique local businesses while connecting them to the public, which is part of what gives Oklahoma City its charm. To schedule a game with us or to purchase a gift certificate, visit theescapeokc.com or give us a call at 405-898-8999.

WAIT -- IS THAT PUMPKIN SPICE? DAMN, IT’S THE HOLIDAYS AGAIN.

IF IT DOESN’T ADD TO THE LOOK OR BALANCE COLOR OR TEXTURES, THEN IT IS CLUTTER.

It may seem as though November and December come earlier and earlier each year, but there is no stopping it, and it does little good to deny it. The most wonderful time of the year is upon us. Galas, parties, dinners, guests, gifts, decorating and planning galore! I know…you’re already worn out just thinking about all that there is to do. Relax! Here are some easy guidelines to help you navigate the holidays and make your home the best it can be for this important and beautiful time of year. Transforming your home for the holiday season can be overwhelming, and one of the pitfalls that I often see is clients adding to their existing décor without first editing. Think of your space like a busy nightclub in the 80’s – it’s a one out, one in situation. I always advise taking a quick inventory of what you have and visualizing how it will play with your holiday decorations. If it doesn’t add to the look or balance color or textures, then it is clutter. Just to be clear – adding a throw pillow doesn’t mean you necessarily have to edit a throw pillow, but it might mean you remove one of the accessories on that nearby end table, so your guests aren’t being visually bombarded from room to room.

METALLICS CREATE A HOLIDAY FEEL WITHOUT SUCH A LITERAL HOLIDAY THEME.

Now that you are editing a bit to make room for the holiday, it’s time to consider non-traditional aspects that can help create the feeling of the season without being so literal. Think richer colors, patterns and textures, but not necessarily a Santa figurine on every surface. I often mix in the non-traditional by simply incorporating metallic elements into existing décor. Just as if you put on jewelry for a holiday party – metallics work! There are many very simple ways to infuse some rich metallic love into your space. Try changing out a few throw pillows, replacing some decorative candles or accessories, or changing out art or mirrors with something that has a bit more sparkle and shine. When it comes to metallics, I notice that people are afraid of mixing – don’t be! Most homes have a predominant metal finish, and that is fine. But, that does not mean you shouldn’t introduce some contrasting metals in small ways to create interest and dress your space up. If you have mostly cooler tones, like nickel or chrome, then contrast that with gold or bronze. If you have mostly warmer tones, then maybe chrome or metallic blue is what you need. Metallics create a holiday feel without such a literal holiday theme.

it’s the holidays!

R I C H E R C O L O R S , M E TA L L I C S A N D G R E E N E R Y

Finally, adding greenery and live elements (like flowers or plants) is always a good idea. I suggest these design aspects year-round, as they bring your space to life, add texture to create warm and inviting spaces, and connect us with a natural calming influence. At no time are these rewards more beneficial than during the holidays. The holidays are a time for reflection, appreciation and relaxation. I hope you use these tips and tricks this year to give your space a fresh feeling that encourages all of these goals. And remember what I always say: Friends don’t let friends drink and design, so put down that eggnog and hire an Oklahoma design professional to make this year your easiest and most stylish yet!

Optimal Life Space YOUR CLOSET IS WHAT YOU MAKE IT.

Are you stuck with the closet you inherited? Do you take one look inside and want to slam the door shut? You’re not alone - closets are overlooked in most homes. You spend a morning searching for the perfect dress you know you have. You find that sweater- but it’s wrinkled in a corner. I hear many reasons why closets are messy. “I don’t have space for a beautiful closet.”, “I rent - what’s the point?”, or “If I just had more storage…” The truth is - more space is great, but space alone won’t solve the problem. HERE AR E

5

TIPS FOR FOR MAKING A CLOSE T INTO YOUR CLOSET.

FOR THE HOMEOWNER

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Only design for items you love. Declutter before you design your space.

Measure your closet and the clothes you plan to put in it. Specificity is key. Count how many shirts, shoes, etc. you own, and design according to the number and size of the items.

Design for how you live. Optimize how you prefer to store your clothes. Hang or fold? Design based on your preference.

Choose materials you can find moving forward. Avoid purchasing one-off items because they’re on sale. Choose products you can find moving forward to maintain a consistent look.Use battery-powered lights to illuminate your space and highlight your clothes.

Use ALL available space. “The worst design flaw in your average built-in closet is wasted vertical space.” - Jimmy Seifert. Hooks, shelves, and stackable bins maximize the full height of walls, cubbies, and shelves.

The Container Store is a leading retailer of storage and organization products in the United States. According to the retailer’s closet buyer, Jimmy Seifert, “Focus on these key areas when trying to maximize your space: the closet rod, floor space, and your door. Slim hangers, expandable add-on closet rods, hanging compartment organizers and over-the-door shoe racks are great ways to maximize your storage space.”

52 LUXIERE

Photos: Kelsi Laine Photography | www.kelsilaine.com

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

FOR THE RENTER Ditch products that don’t work. No one has time to wrestle their organizing products. If it is hard to open/close, ditch it.

Invest in yourself, not your space. The Container Store’s Elfa closet systems are configurable to your current needs, easy to install and pack up when it’s time to move on. The investment is with you and not your space.

Use functional hangers. Use sleek velvet hangers to save space.

Get dressed with the lights on. Use battery-powered lights to illuminate your space and highlight your clothes.

Stick with one style. Decide on one theme for your organizing products. This creates a cohesive space that looks intentional, even when it’s temporary.

Jennifer Welch and the Case of the Queso Cabana story: Stacy Johnson | photography: Josh Welch Photography

Since Brian Bogert acquired his Mediterranean-style, historic home, dubbed Guacamole Manor in Oklahoma City’s Edgemere Park neighborhood 3 years ago, the restaurateur and entertainment impresario, whose holdings include the Fuzzy’s Tacos chain and the Jones Assembly, has been steadily working with Jennifer Welch Designs to make the manse even more magnificent. Luxiere recently caught up with Welch, whose reality television series ‘Sweet Home Oklahoma’ kicked off its latest season in early November.

the project:

L U X I E R E H O M E F E AT U R E

Your latest project at Brian Bogert’s Guacamole Manor was the Queso Cabana. What needed to happen with the cabana? What problems did you need to solve aesthetically or practically?

LUXIERE:

Jennifer Welch: Where the cabana sits now was originally a two-car detached garage that the homeowner never used, because there is a two-car attached garage to the house. We knew we wanted to combine the existing Mediterranean architecture with some clean, modern touches. We gutted the existing garage and started from scratch.

LUXIERE:

When did you begin conceptualizing, and what was Brian’s input?

JW: Brian brought in the architect that he used for the Jones Assembly, James Boswell. James, Brian, Tim Hughes, and my team all met to draw up details and discuss timeline. Brian saw this cool glass box on Instagram, and knew he wanted to incorporate this into his cabana.

How did you achieve his goals? What would you like readers to know about the project, or about what your company can do for them?

LUXIERE:

JW: We added a Nana wall so that the cabana could open directly to the pool and really have an indoor/ outdoor feeling. Owning bars and restaurants, Brian wanted the cabana to have tap beer and a margarita machine, which was quickly filled with Frose’. A wood burning pizza oven was also installed. We used a fabulous custom made Moroccan themed Kyle Bunting cowhide rug to anchor the living space. Modern indoor/outdoor sofas flank the custom fireplace by Young Brothers. A palette of white with pops of color ultimately tied this cabana to the existing house.

The sparkling pool is one of many focal points of this captivating estate, lovingly dubbed “El Sueño.” The Spanish villa on acreage was meticulously planned from the fountains, roof tiles and unique layout down to the beautiful wood doors, imported light fixtures and even exceptional hardware. This home is a showplace for a well-lived lifestyle and a natural oasis for celebrating with family and friends. The first floor living space is truly the heart of this home with a thoughtfully planned kitchen including a La Cornue range built into the custom center island. The formal living and dining room beckon to host events from casual parties to formal soirées. The downstairs walk-out basement offers daily fun with a media room and leads out to the luxurious pool. The third floor suite houses the only bedroom inside the main dwelling, the master, along with a study and an optional second bedroom. As soon as you enter the iron gates you will be captivated by the rare quality and historical essence of El Sueño. Welcome Home!
