Summer beauty has a mind of its own, and between steamy Oklahoma days, time at the pool and rounds of travel, it takes a little focus to keep skin healthy and beautiful.

Choose a palette and let your imagination run riot in every room in your home. Navy and orange enliven; aqua and violet soothe. The possibilities are endless.

The age-old saying “It’s lonely at the top” no longer exists for a large group of entrepreneurs and executives in Oklahoma. Executive peer networks are on the rise, especially here in Oklahoma.

Stylist extraordinaire Meghan Spears brings us the best picks for summer: shoes, wine, accessories and more. Her eye is impeccable.

As photographer Shevaun Williams travels the globe, we are the gracious beneficiaries of her artistic images. Her story this issue takes us to India, a colorful, beautiful place you won’t soon forget.

International design phenom Stella Thomas now calls Stillwater home. She has opened an atelier, and when she isn’t traveling to fit clients, she’s merrily creating her magical jewelry and clothing.

Camp HOPE America is the first evidence-based camping and mentoring program for children exposed to trauma in the United States. Oklahoma’s incarnation opened two years ago and is changing young lives for the better.

There is not another home like the Prairie Raptor anyplace on the globe. Created by Oklahoma-born, Arizona-based Eddie Jones of Jones Studio, the Raptor is home to one amazing family, a small herd of horses, several serval cats and a duo of dogs, but it’s the home itself that delights us the most.

Why own a house when you can inhabit a home? Spa baths, soothing soaking tubs, luxurious heated floors, gorgeous millwork and chefs’ kitchens, beautiful fireplaces, manicured grounds…you’ll find the details that speak to your heart among our pages. Explore.

CLOSER TO HOME A Note from the Publisher Oklahoma summers are filled with beauty, heat and masses of color. Our skies are a brilliant blue, summer crops shimmer in vivid shades of green and gold, and our vermillion earth is a perfect foil for bright wildflowers in every shade of blue, gold, orange and purple. It’s a cacophony of lush visuals, if one has the wherewithal to venture outdoors. In this issue we are pleased to take you to a spot in our state like no other. Oklahoma-born architect Eddie Jones, whose Arizona-based firm received a call out of the blue, designed the Prairie Raptor in part as an homage to the iconic Norman structure, the Prairie House, better known as the Prairie Chicken. Inside the Raptor lives a very private family, along with several rescued serval and mixed breed big cats. It is a joyful space, bright and filled with light. Shevaun Williams recently spent time in another place filled with brilliant, vibrant color and culture: India. Her images are captivating, and flipping through the pages of her journey is mesmerizing. She has captured, for all of us, the beautiful colors and culture of a continent half a world away.

Family Justice Center. Its Camp HOPE Oklahoma is in its third year, and some 65 children will attend. The Camp is designed to reduce the effects of trauma in young people and increase their feelings of hope and optimism. Although Camp HOPE and Palomar are new kids on the non-profit scene, the issue’s Woman of Influence is the president & CEO of a longestablished nonprofit whose mission is to help homeless children. Susan Agel has been at the helm of Positive Tomorrows for nearly a decade, and, like all good public servants, she considers that she is the lucky one. We have filled our pages with the beautiful, the positive and the uplifting, and we hope you find them so. The world is a wonderful place. Respectfully,

WOMEN OF INFLUENCE

WOMAN OF INFLUENCE “There is a piece of Scripture that I try to live my life by,” says Susan Agel, president of Positive Tomorrows, Oklahoma City’s elementary school for homeless children. “In fact, when I was honored as Woman of the Year by the Journal Record, which really surprised me, I read it as my acceptance speech.” It is, perhaps unsurprisingly, Proverbs 31:8-9: Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy. It hangs on the wall of her office, a cherished gift from her daughter and a constant reminder of what really matters for Agel and all of the staff, patrons and volunteers who make Positive Tomorrows possible. Agel has spent her career selflessly fighting the good fight and helping the most vulnerable among us, because, as she puts it, “I really like being a part of something bigger than myself. I like having the opportunity to really have an impact. It’s very fulfilling.” Her career began in Kansas, her home state, where she earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree; a job with Deaconess Hospital brought Agel and her husband, a retired science teacher, to Oklahoma. “I helped set up, and was the director of, the Deaconess Foundation, when Deaconess was a nonprofit,” she says. Agel has also lent her passion and talents to the Children’s Center in Bethany, City Rescue Mission and the Butterfield Memorial Foundation. She’s a pretty, cheerful woman, well-dressed and polished, with beautifully-cut silver hair and an easy laugh. There’s a sparkle in her eye, and she has an innate calming effect. On this day, she says, the school is much quieter than usual because the kids are all at a nearby church watching a performance by the Sugar Free

Allstars, local rock gods for the eightand-under set. “Our major goal here is to provide a calm and peaceful – and happy – environment, and for the adults to model that for the children because most of our kids have never had that,” she says. About nine years ago, she walked through the doors of Positive Tomorrows as its president, and since then the number of children and families the nonprofit assists has doubled and will double again in the next few years. “Before I came here, Positive Tomorrows used to use federal funding that came to us through Oklahoma City Public Schools, but when the No Child Left Behind Act passed, the focus shifted and we were required to mainstream homeless kids, which is not our mission. So that funding went away. It was a huge hit, half to a third of our budget. We had to rebuild, and we’ve been on a steep growth curve ever since.”

There were spots for 36 children when Agel arrived. Now, there are five classrooms with 16 students in each class. There are services and programs for parents and families, counseling for the kids, after school care and activities like scouting or basketball, meals and snacks and everything a child needs to become ready to learn. On a typical school day, the 80 or so children arrive at school on the Positive Tomorrows buses around 8:15 a.m. They settle in and eat breakfast and are ready to learn shortly thereafter. Although the kids are grouped in classrooms by the grade level most appropriate for their chronological ages, their academic skillsets vary widely. Small class sizes, with a teacher and teacher’s aide for every 16 students, enable faculty to meet the children where they are and make progress from there.

story: Christine Eddington / photography: Ryan Magnani 10 LUXIERE

WOMEN OF INFLUENCE

“We want our kids to feel like every other kid in school. We’ve heard kids say, and have seen research that also says, that a homeless child in a typical school is a lonely child. They don’t have birthday parties and they are not invited to birthday parties. They don’t play team sports. They aren’t asked to sleepovers and they can’t host sleepovers. One day, I was in our Pre-K classroom and kids were showing each other that they’d lost teeth, and I heard a little tiny voice behind me say that she’d put her tooth under her pillow but the tooth fairy didn’t come.” At Positive Tomorrows, staff plans the usual fun for the students, but extra measures are taken so nobody feels left out. “When we have pajama day, we realize that our kids might not have pajamas, so the day before pajama day, everyone gets a new pair of pajamas,” Agel says, as she gestures toward a well-stocked supply cabinet containing clothing and sleepwear, shoes, medicines, grooming products, school supplies and snacks. The closet is bursting at the seams, as is the building currently housing the school. “I knew we needed a new building the first day I walked in,” Agel says. But she also knew that there was serious groundwork that had to be done before her board could launch a capital campaign. And then came campaign co-chairmen Judy Love and Todd Lechtenberger. “I couldn’t believe Judy Love said yes. She is a godsend. She and Todd came together and we all just got out of their way and supported them, and they raised the money we need for a new school in about a year,” she says. “We are just a little bit short, maybe $200,000, but we are close enough that we hope to break ground in June.” The new building will give Positive Tomorrows the space to effectively double its number of students again. For Agel, serving others is a joyful privilege. She feels that completing the new school for Positive Tomorrows will be the capstone of her career and her legacy, although in nine years her enthusiasm seems to have only grown. “Every day when I walk in, I can’t believe I’m here. It’s so cool,” she says, beaming.

The main concern is looking fresh while the summer heat melts your face off. Am I right? Focus on only wearing coverage where you need it. Neutralizing redness around the nose, brows, and mouth while keeping the rest of the skin even. The less coverage the better! This is a great time to pull out a BB Cream or a tinted moisturizer. You get the benefits of a primer, spf and a little coverage in one. Switch out your cream products for powder ones for melt-proof looks. I opt for concealer under the eyes, a dusting of a sheer foundation stick on the face, powder bronzer, pop of blush, and highlighter on the highpoints of the cheek bones (hint: skip the highlighter on the forehead, nose and upper lip. That way you glow and don’t appear sweaty). If eyes are your thing make sure you opt for longwear liner and mascara that stays put.

WHAT CAN ADDING COLOR MEAN TO YOUR SPACE?

I n recent years a cool, neutral palette of whites and grays has transformed

our interiors to peaceful refuges and safe havens. This crisp, white wash of our favorite spaces is calming and comfortable and aids to silence the babble of noise in our daily lives. I can attest to the calm you feel in spaces filled with natural light and wide open floorplans. This trend has seen us through times of financial uncertainty, political turmoil, and a never-ending barrage of technology, advertising and non-stop news. The clean neutral palate has coddled us over the past few years, but the sky hasn’t fallen, so now we look to the future with a new perspective and an excitement for breaking the norm. New York Fashion Week in spring of 2018 could have easily impressed with staples of blacks, grays, beiges, and whites, but this wasn’t a show for the faint at heart. It was truly a parade of beautiful and brilliant color. A confidence exuded from known designers like Brandon Maxwell, with shades of hot pink and bright red. Calvin Klein showed primary blues. Marc Jacobs, with bright orange, wasn’t to be missed. Color was undeniable and made the statement of the show just that – A STATEMENT. Top interior trendsetters have long looked to fashion for inspiration, but before you go and purchase that lime green wall paint for your living room, you should know that fashion only influences and inspires; it doesn’t write our rules. The interior design world approaches things a bit differently – although you might be brave enough to wear something once, it may be best left in the closet! Still, the theme of color is exactly what this spring and summer are all about, both on our bodies and in our homes!

DESIGN SPEAKS: COLOR navy and orange

What can adding color mean to your space? My clients here in Oklahoma are asking for aquas and navies and oranges - Oh, my! I love adding interest with these color pops, but I recommend that they are reserved for areas that are easily changed once the mood or feel of a room changes. Focus on one predominate paint color, spectacular wallpaper, or a statement-making material, and pull the look together with complimentary supporting colors. The predominate color that you chose will give a feeling to all who enter. Red increases metabolism and also blood pressure (Use with caution). Green and blue are both restful and calming, while violet brings cheer and promotes memory. Did you know that 62-90% of a quick assessment of any space has to do only with color? It’s true. You might think that your statement maker is the one-of-a-kind antique find you snatched up from Mockingbird Manor on Western or that live edge natural wood element you cleverly found at Urban Farmhouse downtown. These are important aspects of good design and will be addressed in future DESIGN SPEAKS, but for now - It’s COLOR, folks. Classically overlooked and often ignored – COLOR! Now that you are ready to infuse a little color in your interior, just remember to select pieces you truly LOVE, and you will never grow tired of them. Also, friends don’t let friends drink and decorate…so if you aren’t up to the challenge, then pour that glass of wine for yourself, contact one of the incredibly capable designers and craftsmen in this great state we all call HOME, and make a true design friend!

story and photographs: Shevaun Williams

When I was a small child, my twin and I would wrestle the National Geographic picture book from a high shelf. I remember it being quite as big as we were as we spread out on the living room floor to flip through the full color pages. It may truly have been the original spark for my love affair with travel and the camera. I admit some of my destination choices these days have origin in the fanciful stories we invented which were built around the images which lived on those pages. The vibrant photographs of India with women in their brightly colored saris and the men in curious turbans resulted in a trance that only really happens with a child and a picture book. The vivid memories I have from that young mind matched the brilliant experience of Rajasthan. Translated from Hindustani as the “Land of Kings”, Rajasthan, India is intensely intoxicating. It is also advanced travel. While a local tour company claims that “legend has it that colour film was invented specifically to capture the vibrancy of India”, that wonderful experience of the color, the smell and the tastes overwhelming the senses and surprising you with its power lies in stark contrast to the hardships and chaos evident in the region. But what Rajasthan demands in understanding, she gives back in other ways tenfold.

ajasthan epitomizes India at its most exotic. Locations such

as The Golden Fort of Jaisalmer, The Pink City that is Jaipur or The Blue City of Jodhpur, the unique sunsets over the Thar Desert, the extravagant palaces, temples and forts that take your breath away offer a visual feast to satisfy and even overwhelm professional and amateur image makers alike. However, it is the cultural treasure of the people of Rajasthan and their beautiful community life that gives the region its distinctive character and makes it unique even in India. The range of diversities and ethnicity, the strong will of the people and the beauty of a population which still embraces tradition in atmosphere and costume compose the richest travel experience and provide a visual narrative that feeds a creative soul. The landmarks and landscape prove a distant rival to the beauty of the women of Rajasthan who stand out with grace, dignity and emerging individuality. And then, let’s face it, there is the food.

COMMUNIT Y SPOTLIGHT

In 2016, Palomar, Oklahoma City’s Family Justice Center, was somewhere between dream and reality. It had no building. It had no staff. But President & CEO Kim Garrett knew that even before her dream of creating a multi-agency haven of help and healing for victims of domestic and sexual abuse was complete, she needed to create something for the children of trauma. And that something was Camp HOPE. “In our first year, we had 29 campers. In 2018 we will have 65. They range in age from 8-16 this year, and they will be at Camp HOPE for about a week, and in that week, we try to change their lives. On average, our campers’ ACE (Adverse Childhood Experiences) scores are 4.8 out of 10, which is very high,” Garrett says. Some perspective: ACE scores are determined by answering ten questions. One of the questions is ‘Before your 18th birthday, did an adult or person at least five years older than you ever touch or fondle you or have you touch their body in a sexual way? Or attempt or actually have oral, anal, or vaginal intercourse with you?’ “One little girl raised her hand and asked if she should mark this question with a one or with a 300,” Garrett says.

As one 11 year old camper said,

“This is the first time I’ve ever felt safe.”

Camp HOPE America is the first evidence-based camping and mentoring program for children exposed to trauma in the United States. Its goal is to give children and teens their childhood back and help them find a Pathway to HOPE. Its vision is to break the generational cycle of family violence by offering healing and hope to children and adults who have witnessed and been impacted by family violence. Camp HOPE America was founded in San Diego in 2003 and since then has spread across the country, state by state and camp by camp. Kellen Mack is Palomar’s Kids’ Hope Coordinator. She spent two years as a Camp HOPE counselor and is dedicated to improving the lives of children exposed to high levels of trauma and toxic stress. “ I love how our campers cheer each other on and get braver as camp continues. We do something called challenge by choice, which means that kids can challenge themselves by degrees. Maybe one day they just think about trying something new, then the next day they watch others do it, and on the next day they do it themselves,” Mack says. It’s hard to imagine the kinds of trauma Camp HOPE Campers have seen in their young lives. What’s impressive about Camp HOPE is that children heal a bit when they attend. Garrett tells the story of a child who attended last year, “He was 12 years old, and very small for his age. His little body was covered in scars from cigarette burns and whip marks. He ran a lot, meaning he ran away from camp when something upset him, or when he felt nervous. Little things that wouldn’t be huge to you or me, like dinner being late, felt insurmountable to him,” she says.

CA M P H O P E PA R T I C I PA N T S H AV E E X P E R I E N C E D S O M E D I F F I C U LT T R AU M AS , I N C L U D I N G :

The campers are all given swimming lessons, and are tested to ascertain their swimming ability. This boy could not swim. The test was for the children to make it across the pool, with their heads above water, without putting a foot down. “He put his foot down, clenched his fists and began to cry great big tears. We thought he’d run. But he didn’t. Instead he went and got out a stress ball, and started squeezing it while running in place. He had learned to self-soothe!,” Garrett says. The next day, every child (and adult) in camp gathered to cheer this little boy on at he took another shot at the swimming test. He did it. This may seem like a small victory, a commonplace summer camp achievement, and it is, but that’s the point. Its importance lies in its banality. This child, these children, who have faced trauma that no one should ever face, come together in the summer and learn to swim and to laugh and to cheer each other on.

THE

prairie raptor story: Stacy Johnson // photographs: Bill Timmerman

O

On a beautifully rugged, 44-acre plot of land not far from the center of Oklahoma City, the Prairie Raptor, a 5,000+ square foot home, waits for visitors, cool and low among the trees. Its owners, a married couple with a penchant for privacy, live in the home, essentially a huge piece of art, along with two dogs, one a standard Mexican hairless, the other an inherited mutt, a slew of horses, and three exotic cats, one a serval the size of a foxhound. He is a retired geologist whose career trajectory is as unique as their home, and she is a chemist and pharmacist, who happens to be active in the serval and exotic cat rescue community. To reach the home, visitors pass through a wide gate and wind up a long, curved drive. The newly-built barn appears to the right, and the home appears shortly thereafter to the left. The home emerges in bits and pieces through the trees, revealing itself slowly. Both structures pay visual homage to an iconic home outside of Norman, affectionately dubbed the Prairie Chicken.

48 LUXIERE

LUXIERE 49

E

ddie Jones, whose Arizona firm designed the house,

wrote this of the Prairie Chicken: “Unknown to the most recent generation of architects, a strange but wonderful house still ‘lives’ outside Norman, Oklahoma, quietly at home with the vast horizon and prairie grasses. Built in 1954, it was the great architect Herb Greene’s first completed project. Locals have always called it the Prairie Chicken. I first saw it as a college student, and its image of frozen poetry never left me.” Jones and his brother Neal grew up in Oklahoma, and attended Oklahoma State University before founding their firm, Jones Studio, Inc., in 1979. The homeowner describes how the design came to be, “My wife and I had originally wanted to build a home in Arizona. We wanted to build a type of adobe structure called a rammed earth home, which is where the builder takes rocks and gravel from the site, mixes them with concrete, and rams layers of it together to build up walls,” Ultimately, the couple decided to build in Oklahoma and thought they’d build an “Arizona house” here, but rammed earth structures won’t work in Oklahoma. The climate and soil don’t support such construction, so the pair decided to try to come up with a variation, and the results are truly and beautifully original. The front door is massive and swings open on an axis, although it looks like it could slide open, barn-door style. Immediately inside, visitors are greeted by the Cat Jungle Room, an atrium-cum-entryway. Why is it called Cat Jungle Room? The couple’s serval and other large cats have free roam of the home, and the room was designed with their perching and leaping needs in mind. The largest of their cats is knee-high, and it glides past guests with aloof dignity. Once you are in the Cat Jungle, the choices are plentiful. To the immediate left, out a door and through a courtyard, is the home office space. It converts into space for a guest with a clever Murphy bed. Walls here and throughout the home, are paneled in Sapele, a beautifully warm-toned African redwood very similar to mahogany. At the right of the Cat Jungle is a passageway to the master suite. The walls do not culminate at the ceiling - nor do they in the rest of the house. There’s no need, because none are load-bearing. The Prairie Raptor’s steel and brick infrastructure takes care of that. The master suite faces the lap pool, which aligns with the Devon Tower downtown, which can be seen from the home’s hilltop location.

Proceed straight ahead from the Cat Jungle and veer left down a short flight of stairs and a vast space opens before you. This has been dubbed the Greatest Room, because it’s like a Great Room, but larger than most. Here is the main living space, where dining, cooking, entertaining, reading, cocktailing and lounging take place. The room’s floors are brick pavers fired in the same batch as the rest of the home’s bricks, all of which are black with very subtle amber inclusions. The steel infrastructure is exposed as window casings. Walls are Sapele and ceilings are large louvers of straight-grain Douglas fir. There is no formal dining room, because, as the homeowner put it, “We are not formal.” The guest house and barn are housed in separate buildings, just steps away from the main house. In the guest house, a small kitchenette and spacious sleeping room are illuminated by a large, slightly curvy skylight. The barn, constructed by local builder Dave Goodman, is organic in its shape and beautifully finished inside and out. The homeowners took pains to ensure that all of the subcontractors were Oklahomans. The only material that did not come from Oklahoma was the steel. During construction, the oil patch was booming, so Oklahoma steel fabricators were swamped. “It’s really a very simple house,” says the low-key homeowner. “It’s a hidden house, beautifully proportional to the land it occupies.”

FROM THE ARCHITECT: “The client called us out of the blue one day, to design his home. That never happens,” says Eddie Jones, president of Jones Studio in Tempe, Ariz. “We hit it off immediately, especially after he found out I am from Oklahoma City.” Jones was fascinated by one house as a young man growing up in central Oklahoma: the Prairie House, outside of Norman. “It was unprecedented. So honest. The Prairie Raptor is also grounded in the vernacular of Oklahoma. It is a part of the land.”
