PASSION, DRIVE & SERVICE A Note from the Publisher

Welcome, dear readers, to the 13th issue of Luxiere Magazine. Our magazine came to life one year ago, after living in my dreams for 5 years before that. The initial idea, and the guiding principle we work from, was (and is) to fill a niche in the marketplace. We simply want to introduce you, our state’s most discerning citizens, to Oklahoma’s very best, and them to you. To us, ‘best’ means the most innovative, creative, brilliant, and interesting people and businesses we’ve ever met. We wanted to tell their stories through incredible images and eloquent stories, to underscore their power. We take a similar approach with our clients. They’re the innovators, the relentless pursuers of excellence and it is our honor to share them with you. I’m pleased to say, as I look back through our first year, that we’ve been true to our mission. What we set out to do, we are indeed doing. As you leaf through this issue, in both our editorial and our advertisers, you’ll meet men and women whose passion, drive, and service to others are inspirational and aspirational.

Our Woman of Influence, Audra Montgomery, is an angel on Earth. Our artisan profile, Clay Chapman, has combined the eye of a sculptor with 2,000 year-old construction techniques and 21st Century technology to craft homes that are as beautiful as they are indomitable. Dr. Anureet Bajaj is a sculptor of the human form, and her surgical skill yields results that are impeccable and precise. I’ll end this note with a request. Let’s all hold a prayer, whatever that means to you, for everyone who continues to be affected by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. If you are in a position to donate to the recovery efforts, whether with time or funds, please consider doing so. Enjoy this issue, and let’s all count our blessings!

OF INFLUENCE 10 WOMAN Audra Montgomery has been quietly raising money for research toward a

cure for Cystic Fibrosis for more than a decade. Her story begins at a roller rink, where a little girl demanded a birthday present and stole Audra’s heart, and if she has her way, it won’t end until Cystic Fibrosis is as easily managed as the common cold.

12 TRAVEL Each summer, Josh Welch and his wife Jennifer pack up the family and head for the sunny climes of the European coasts. While the trip always takes them to their beloved Capri, this year the Welches’ voyage also took them to Greece – Mykonos, to be exact, and its idyllic beaches and sublime beauty.

DR. BAJAJ 18 SPOTLIGHT: Dr. Anureet Bajaj is a fastidious force of nature and one of the most-sought plastic surgeons in the state. Her early training in the fine arts and her love of beauty make her the logical choice for women who value subtlety and meticulous reconstruction.

community on the shores of Lake Eufaula, Carlton Landing, is a maestro in brick. Clay Chapman moved his family from Georgia to bring a level of craftsmanship and his unique structural masonry to the town.

OKLAHOMA 28 IMPACT What started as a girls’ trip has become a powerful, life-changing

nonprofit. It has bestowed 43 grants totaling almost $2.9 million to Oklahoma nonprofits in the categories of Family, Health and Wellness, Education, Community and Culture, which it will celebrate at a fete later this month.

Montgomery, a REALTOR® is a driven woman with boundless energy, which she applies to every facet of her life. Since she became involved with the Gala ten years ago, it’s raised $1.25 million, mostly for research. She and Doug, through the Halloween party and other contributions, have contributed more than $100,000 during the same timeframe, and feel blessed to be able to do so. Approximately 30,000 people in the United States have cystic fibrosis, with 1,000 newly diagnosed each year. In Oklahoma

Slowly, as treatment improved, life expectancy rose to 20 years, then 30, and now there are more adult cystic fibrosis patients than children. Montgomery is adamant that she sees hope on the horizon, and a day when cystic fibrosis is identified and treated before a baby is even born. She smiles as she muses, “When this disease is solved, and I truly believe that very soon it will no longer be life-threatening, I’m not sure what I’ll do. I guess I’ll have to move on to another cause.”

the

Simple Splendor of Mykonos By Josh Welch

T R AV E L

According to mythology, Mykonos was named for the grandson of Apollo. Its spirit is a fascinating blend of glamour and ease, of decadence and restraint. Azure waters, whitewashed villages, bougainvillea trees heavy with purple blooms and hidden churches offset the lively atmosphere of the waterfront and glamourous Matoyanni Street, lined with exquisite shops and cafés. The island’s capital town is Hora, and is one of the world’s best examples of Cycladic architecture. Its narrow, marble streets, colorful doors and window frames and glimmering light are mesmerizing. Wind surfers and sailors from around the world travel to Mykonos, whose nickname “The Island of the Wind,” does not disappoint. Beaches abound, as do surfing lessons, tennis, beach volleyball courts, SCUBA diving hot spots, jet-ski rentals and sea parachuting. Mykonos was our family’s last stop this year on our annual trip to Capri. It was our first time on the island and we were amazed by the beautiful sunsets, ocean views, and charming walks throughout the town. We strongly recommend spending one day absorbing the local scene and navigating through the narrow pathways of shops in Mykonos. The clean white and blue aesthetics of the buildings throughout the island do not disappoint.

Anureet Bajaj Dr.

The Thinking Woman’s Plastic Surgeon

Dr. Anureet ‘Anu’ Bajaj is tiny, fierce, brilliant and competitive. These are four immutable truths. She is a powerful, dynamic presence, in part because her energy field precedes her and is palpable. Electric. This woman drives herself, and every accomplishment, every daring feat of professional or personal prowess leads only to the next. She is a relentless champion of excellence, surgical and otherwise, but joyfully so. She smiles often, and when she does, her whole being seems to light up. “I love to push myself,” she says. “Microsurgery is what I love to do; I feel at home and at peace under the microscope. I have an eye, and my hands are good.” She’s confident but not arrogant. When asked why someone should choose her over another surgeon, she simply replies “Because I’m really good.”

LUXIERE 19

SPOTLIGHT

On this day, Dr. Bajaj has performed five procedures on three patients, including a brow lift, breast augmentation, liposuction, and blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery). She carries with her a huge, lidded cup full of an electrolyte-water potion she sips frequently, to maintain hydration which can easily be depleted during long hours of surgery. Anu Bajaj didn’t always want to become a surgeon, or even to practice medicine at all, although her father is also a renowned plastic surgeon. “My dream when I was younger was to write for The New York Times. But I went to medical school, and I focused on women’s health. I discovered that I love surgery while observing a jaw reconstruction on a patient who’d had cancer. The doctors took bone from his fibula and grafted his skin and created a jaw for him. At that moment I knew what I wanted to do.” Her patients range from people, primarily women, who are interested in fine-tuning their appearances, to breast cancer survivors who need high-level reconstruction surgery. She was one of the first surgeons in Oklahoma to perform the DIEP Flap and other microvascular flaps for breast reconstruction a decade ago. “Reconstructing breasts can be done multiple ways, each very different, based on a woman’s situation. We reconstruct women who have had mastectomies differently than we do women who’ve had radiation. Patients who have had radiation therapy for breast cancer aren’t recommended for implant surgery because radiation diminishes the elasticity of the skin. These are the women who we often see for procedures like the DIEP Flap.” A patient’s own tissue is used to create soft, natural looking breasts with no implants in this procedure. “We dissect out the muscle tissue from the anterior abdominal wall. It’s challenging because the muscle needs its own blood supply to survive, so we have to carefully reconnect all of the tiny vessels. I love doing this procedure. It’s so satisfying to reattach the tissue and see it start circulating blood.” Unlike traditional breast augmentation, flap procedures are major surgery, often requiring a three-day hospital stay followed by six weeks of recovery time. The doctor is herself no stranger to the occasional aesthetic nip or tuck. “I have had liposuction, injectables like Botox and fillers, laser hair removal and breast augmentation. A group of my female colleagues from around the country and I all compare notes on what we have had done, and how we rate the results. It’s a good way to hear about a technique or procedure first hand from someone you respect and trust. We get the surgeon’s perspective and also the perspective of the patient that way.” The work she has had done is beautifully discreet and extremely natural looking, and she brings that refined aesthetic to her patients. Bajaj’s obsession with surgical excellence has been paralleled by her yearslong immersion in the arts. “I took art classes throughout high school

20 LUXIERE

and college, and when I lived in Ohio, I studied at the Arts Institute in Cincinnati. When I moved back to Oklahoma City, I continued taking art classes until about three years ago.” Bajaj loves ceramics, and painting. It should surprise no one that her subject of choice is figures, specifically nudes. “Plastic surgery is a science, and it is also an art. There is great value to be gained in training your eye to recognize and create classic beauty.” Classic beauty is and timeless proportions are what her patients seek. What Bajaj does not do is venture into the realm of the extreme. “That is a big point for me. I won’t steer someone to the ridiculous. If a petite women wants 800 cc implants, that’s certainly her choice, but I’m not the surgeon for that,” she says. Bajaj is a plastic surgeon who specializes in both aesthetic surgery and reconstructive surgery. Plastic surgeons have a minimum of three years of training in general surgery and minimum of three years of training in plastic surgery. Many, like Bajaj, then also choose to pursue fellowships for further, more focused training. “It’s important for patients to understand the extensive training and practice required to become a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. It is this solid foundation in general surgery, reconstructive surgery, and aesthetic surgery that helps us to successfully perform the nuances of cosmetic surgery. For example, if you can repair a complex facial fracture, it gives you the tools to perform a facelift,” Bajaj says. She is also a voice for gender parity in the medical field, and advocates for women by speaking with groups largely made up of “the old guys,” as Bajaj puts it. She serves on a panel of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons dedicated to reducing gender bias. “It’s important because there is still a lot of gender discrimination in the medical field, and if we don’t explain it to people, they are unaware of how they may be furthering it.” When Anu Bajaj isn’t changing lives on the operating table or in her office, she’s doing the other things she loves most. “I have been married to Trevor Swink for eight years. My husband came with four boys! They are 24, 23, 20 and 13 years old, so yes, we are busy!” The family also has four dogs, although Bajaj confesses that one of them lives with her parents at present. She is an avid marathon runner, and logs 35-40 miles a week. Bajaj is often assisted in surgery by her father, Dr. P.S. Bajaj, who at 78 is as sharp as the scalpels he has wielded for more than 50 years. Bajaj’s father isn’t the only MD in the family. Her two sisters have also entered the field, one is a pediatric dentist and the other an OB-GYN. Her mom is the glue, as moms often are, and is Anu’s office manager at the practice.

Soon after, a couple who had initially wanted Chapman to build their barn, called him and asked if he could build their home. This was a pivotal moment. Chapman invited the couple to come see one of his projects in west Tenneessee, so he could explain to them how he’d approach building their home. “They drove six hours to see me, and when they got out of the car and saw the nearly completed building, they cried,” Chapman said. From there, his homebuilding odyssey began. Carlton Landing, on Lake Eufaula, is now its beneficiary. The town is a beautiful, planned community created by visionary Grant Humphreys, whose obsession with impeccable quality and beautiful aesthetics rivals Chapman’s own. Says Chapman, “I am interested in attaining something the architect Christopher Alexander describes as ‘the quality without a name,’ that inexplicable feeling of a space inviting you to enter it or a path beckoning. It’s an energy you can feel, a stately humility and an honesty of design. These are the things that matter.”

THE MEDALLION GROUP

story: Sherry Dale, Partner - The Mettise Group

How did the Medallion Group start? In 1972, I started Ward Companies, developing Sonic restaurants and Wal-Mart centers for third parties. During that process, my vision evolved into desiring to own the buildings and not just oversee the building process. Over the years, I transitioned to the Landlord side of the business originally concentrating on repurposing existing properties while gradually shifting towards full-scale development from the ground up. In 2000, I rebranded the company as The Medallion Group. Describe the growth of the Company and the development projects over the last few years. We have experienced rapid growth over the past several years. Within the last 10 years, my son and daughter have joined me in the business. Tyler, came on board after working a few years in Chicago for an investment firm and manages the overall operations. A few years later, Whitney joined us after working in politics in D.C. and getting her MBA at the University of Oklahoma. Whitney oversees marketing and the brokerage side of the business. I have transitioned my role to working on special projects. Though we currently own and manage office, retail, and medical properties around the state, the Chisholm Creek development is our primary focus at this time. Chisholm Creek is the 190-acre mixed-use development in north Oklahoma City located on Memorial between Western and Pennsylvania Avenues. It is home to Top Golf, Cabelas, iFly, Republic Gastropub, Fuzzy’s Taco Shop, Yokozuna and many more retail and hospitality establishments. What are the next planned projects? Nearing completion of construction is Westgate at Chisholm Creek, located off of Pennsylvania, and will house Torchy’s Tacos, Potbelly Sandwich Shop, and Starbucks among others.

The Pointe at Chisholm Creek

Up next is the The Pointe at Chisholm Creek, which will be built around a water feature located off of Memorial Road. It will play host to several new to the market restaurants as well as retail and office space. Following The Pointe, The APEX at Chisholm Creek, designed to wrap around Topgolf, will be home to a boutique hotel and over 200,000 square feet of office space. We have a very specific vision for Chisholm Creek- something big, different, new, and impactful, but it’s going to take some time. We are working on a few other projects, outside of Chisholm Creek, which will be announced in the future. How do you select the areas to develop and the buildings to construct? Each of our properties is a little different. We started acquiring land for the Chisholm Creek development over 30 years ago. The turnpike was not even built at that time. Fortunately, the area took off in terms of population and other development as we continued to craft our vision of the entire development. We focus on designing and building innovative and useful facilities for Oklahoma City. You can’t just build and hope people will come. Our intent is to understand the needs of the area and deliver unique venues.

What are the highlights and challenges of owning a family business? The highlight is that I work with my kids every day. The challenge is that I work with my kids every day. It is a healthy balance of managing and teaching, all while getting a significant amount of work done. The hardest thing I have ever done is sit back and watch my kids fail. I wanted so badly to jump in and take control, but if I hadn’t let them fail at times, they would never have learned the ins and outs of the business. Over the years, they seem to be having more successes than failures, which shows me that they are learning and are going to be just fine on their own. I see so much exciting growth in this company’s future that it makes me want to be in my 30s again so I can be here to experience it all!

Tell us about your team culture and how you maintain it? If you work here, you are family to me. At The Medallion Group, we share a multitude of responsibilities and are not confined to overly defined job descriptions. We are all in it together. Everyone is willing to pitch in on whatever needs to be done to achieve our goals. Our team is the real secret to the successes that we’ve enjoyed and without them none of this would be possible. A big key to maintaining our culture is communication and making sure that we’re all working toward the same goals. Another key is not being afraid to seek help from the outside whenever things aren’t running smoothly. Sometimes that outside eye can spot solutions that are right in front of you, that you may not be able to see while buried in the details. The Mettise Group helped us with building and enhancing our high performance team. What advice would you give to a start up entrepreneur? I live by my favorite quote, “You just can’t beat the person that won’t give up” – Babe Ruth. If you stay focused and keep pushing, even when things are hard, you can almost always figure out a way to succeed. I would also say, plan your work and work your plan. There are so many things taking you in different directions that its very easy to get off track. If you take the time to put together a plan and stick to it, you won’t get pulled away from your ultimate objectives. The formula for success is pair focus with never giving up.

Photo: James Harbor

“The formula for SUCCESS is pair focus with never giving up.”

How has your life experience made you the leader you are today? I grew up in a small town in southeast Oklahoma. When I look back I realize how much we didn’t have, but I never wanted for anything. My parents took great care of my brothers and I. When I started in this business, I had nothing. I had to work hard for everything I ever made. Now, I feel confident knowing if I lost everything, I could go back and do it again. I know exactly how I got to where I am today. It takes hard work, lessons learned, and experiences of all kinds. I hope to pass the lessons I have learned on to my team so that they can learn from my experiences. Why invest in OKC? For me, it’s more about investing in my home and where my kids and grandkids live. Oklahoma City is an evolving and dynamic place. I’ve witnessed a dramatic and exciting transformation over the last 15 years and I have been fortunate enough to be able to put my stamp on some of that change.
