There’s a difference between a collector and an acquirer,” Peter Carl said. “A collector is discerning and calculating. Always hunting and never satisfied.” He continued, “An acquirer, they’re in it for quantity, not quality. They’ll take anything whether or not it adds value.” Peter Carl would know. He used to collect Native American pueblo pottery, but he always wanted to own and operate his own liquor store. So, when he was approached by someone who wanted to purchase his art collection, he seized the opportunity. On August 26, 2013, he became the owner of The Well of OKC. With the help of his friend Cody Wilson (now at George’s Liquor), he began to upgrade the liquor store’s inventory. Cody ran the store during the day, and Peter would work the evening shift after his day job. They made a good team. Cody knew how to get rid of the “junk” and Peter began sourcing and investing in higher quality bottles. It took a few years, but The Well’s collection has become one with purpose. Once people recognized Peter as a premium buyer, things

shifted. He didn’t have to work quite as hard to find the superior items he used to hunt for. As the selection continues to grow, so does the customer base. The team members at The Well are more like museum docents than cashiers. Customers have noticed the change and have become fiercely loyal. They know that Peter can find what they need and do what it takes to get it. But Peter and his team aim for more than customer service. Their focus on building relationships is what drives the loyalty of discerning shoppers. When you shop at The Well, you know you’ll get personalized recommendations based on your taste and the staff’s knowledge. “We build relationships with customers, and we give better suggestions because of it,” says Peter. “You won’t spend $100 and feel like you tossed it into the wind.” Peter even offers credit for things his customers don’t like. The collecting community in Oklahoma City has taken notice. The Well’s reputation for scotch whiskey is known both across the U.S. and

internationally. Building inventory like a collector has allowed Peter to source items and quantities that other states can’t get. The investment Peter has made is apparent. But when asked what draws him to collect whiskey, he was quick to respond. “It’s the process. All of it—the craftsmanship that goes into everything from building the barrels to the craft of the drink itself.” Peter says he never second-guessed his decision to sell his art. He doesn’t see it as selling art to buy booze. He simply traded one fine collection for another. When asked what his dreams are for The Well, he responded quickly: “I want it to be mentioned in conversations. I want The Well to be the destination store of choice as opposed to a store of convenience or price.”

AUBREY BALLARD

A MASTERFUL RENOVATION Aubrey Ballard is no stranger to style and color. The fashion blogger and online vintage jewelry shop owner has a uniquely keen eye for creating beauty—one that is undoubtedly evident in her personal style, business, and her home. BY KIANA MORIDI PHOTOGRAPHY BY EMILY HART

W

hen Ballard and her husband moved into their home six years ago, they knew the bathroom would need to be renovated at some point, as it simply didn’t meet the couple’s functional and storage needs. In November of 2019, Ballard and Jennifer Hunter of Hunter Design began to dream up a design. After a full year of ideation to completion, Ballard, Hunter Design, Graeber Design, and crew brought her vision to life—a wonderfully balanced combination of both vintage and modern worlds. With pops of vibrant color in just about every nook of the space, Ballard made sure to stay true to her love for bright hues and vintage stand-outs—turquoise toilet paper, red sink faucets, a 17th century painting mural, and stacked yellow shower tile. “I tend to work with color first, and neutrals second—not the other way around,” she says. “I find myself wanting to strike a balance between vintage and modern. So, to create that balance, I introduced some vintage and vintage-inspired elements, such as an antique Dutch mural from Walls Republic, a Regency chair, a caned linen cabinet, and colonial toothbrush holders.” As with anything that requires renovation, planning and strategizing are a given. Before taking on the project, Ballard knew she had to implement a to-do list to keep things on track. “Before the crew began working on the project, I created my own weekly checklist of things that needed to get done,” she says. “I also had a special box that I dedicated to housing all of the samples, sketches, floor plans and other details from the renovation. I found that keeping everything in one place was a big help in staying organized.”

Throughout the renovation, Ballard learned not only about her love for design, but also about her confidence in making calls on big design decisions. “Once the work on the bathroom began, I quickly learned that I had to be my own advocate to make sure that things were done to my liking,” she says. “I learned to really trust my design instincts. In the beginning, I ran a lot of my design ideas by Jen because I was so afraid that I would make a huge mistake. But as time went on, I grew in my

confidence and was able to make some pretty bold design choices.” As for her favorite aspect of the newly renovated space, Ballard says it’s difficult to choose between lighting and functionality. “It’s a toss-up between the window we installed in the shower and the larger floor plan we created by demoing the adjoining closet,” she says. “Natural light and space to move around were at the top of my wish list when I began redesigning the space.” And the

sun-kissed space is a true testament to that vision—a bathroom so vibrantly lit, it’s impossible to not feel a sense of optimism and peace in its light. Now, when Ballard walks into her colorful oasis, she instantly feels a wave of happiness. “I blame that [feeling] on the decidedly cheerful yellow tile, but I think it’s the fact that it’s my bathroom and it’s all mine to enjoy,” she says.

FINDING THE RIGHT EXECUTIVE COACH WITH ROD WHITSON It takes a good executive coach to know one, and Rod Whitson is no exception to the rule. INTERVIEW BY KIANA MORIDI 20 LUXI E R E

T

he Lead Private Advisory Board for Vistage has been president/CEO at four different companies, so he knows what it’s like to sit in the executive seat. “I’ve had to make the big calls and difficult decisions,” Whitson says. “And I understand the pressure when you take responsibility for the well-being of others—all of that gives my coaching a different perspective and different insights.” Here, we chat with Whitson about executive coaching and how to find the right coach for the new year. Why is coaching so popular today? Executive coaching used to be a last resort for low performers, often the last-ditch effort before firing an executive. In the last decade, the situation is completely different. Executive coaching is a reward for top performers as well as an investment in an organization’s best people. Executive coaching produces results and good return on investment. According to Fortune magazine, a conservative estimate of the monetary payoff from coaching is more than six times the cost of coaching. A Manchester Inc. study demonstrated a sevenfold ROI from coaching. In short, executive coaching is one of the best investments a company can make. How can a coach help someone personally and professionally? The right executive coach will ask you questions nobody else in your life will ask you and will say things to you nobody else will say to you. They will create a safe, confidential environment where you can discuss anything. This is especially true if you are a high-performing leader; after a while people start telling you the things they believe you want to hear. Everyone needs someone who calls it like they see it and shares their truth. An effective coach will push you, challenge you and hold you accountable to what you want to accomplish. What are some behavior patterns you see in the executives you work with? The first is what I call “what got you here won’t get you there.” High-performing people develop accurate mental models and highly effective skills. But suddenly, many of your models and skills can stop working, especially in a rapidly changing situation, a new role, or a new endeavor. In fact, what worked before can start working against you; the more you push the former models and skills, the worse it can get. You need a new set of skills, but it’s unclear what they are and how to get them. An executive coach can help you see clearly what’s happening, and exactly what you need to do to go to the next level. Next are blind spots. Most talented executives are competent, know what they are doing and know how to get results. However, there can be something very simple that’s holding them back from

going to the next level. A few simple adjustments in their style, approach, behavior or communication can go a long way in improving their performance and results. Often the problem is that they are completely unaware of the needed adjustments. They have a blind spot. Everybody around them is painfully aware of it, but few have the courage to share the blind spot with the executive. An effective executive coach can illuminate the blind spot and provide adjustments to make it a non-issue, getting an immediate lift in the perception of the leader. The results can be profound and dramatic. Also, there is a concept from sports psychology that’s really helpful. It’s a simple formula: performance equals potential minus interference. When a top athlete goes into a slump, it is usually not because of a skill or talent problem. It’s usually an interference problem. Examples include thought storms, bad relationships, bad advice or counsel, limiting beliefs, negative frames—the list goes on and on. The formula also applies to top executives. An effective executive coach can help you identify interferences and help you eliminate them. Performance and results rebound, sometimes rather

quickly. Lastly, people just get stuck and need help getting unstuck. Why do people get stuck? People get stuck because they keep asking themselves the same questions over and over. You have the same conversation over and over in your head. The reason why you don’t have the right answer is because you haven’t asked the right question. We all need someone who will challenge our thinking with fresh questions that provide new perspectives and new insights. The new insights can usually be converted into new, better courses of action. An executive coach will ask you great questions, but more importantly, they will help you live into bigger questions.

W

hat’s the difference between a consultant and an executive coach? You hire a consultant because, after some diagnosis of your pain or problem, they will provide the prescription. In other words, consultants provide answers. The same is generally true with mentors. When you call someone with loads of experience in a particular area, they can tell you off the top of their head what

to do. Sometimes people just telling you the answer is helpful and sometimes it’s not. An effective coach will stand at your side, look at the opportunity or challenge with you, help you create new insights, and convert your insights into action. How do you find the right executive coach? The bar is pretty low to be a coach, so make sure you are working with an experienced, proven professional. Ask around and especially ask executives you admire for their success and the way they achieved it. You’ll be surprised how many high-performing executives have a coach. They can make a referral to a great coach and save you significant time. Then do a sample coaching session with them. What’s it like to work with them? Do they ask powerful questions, or do they jump to answers? Are they open, honest and direct? Is there good chemistry? Most of all, check a few references. What is your Luxiere? BECKY ENDICOTT is the queen of “going there,” she revels in asking tough questions, going deeper to understand people and missions, and is typically the first one to cry at moving stories of hope.

F

ounded by Jonathan McCoy and Becky Endicott, We are for Good is determined to disrupt nonprofit fundraising, storytelling and access to resources in the best possible way. It’s an epic love letter to everyone involved in philanthropic endeavors being written in real time, and it might just change the world. “We subscribe to an abundance mindset. We’re all about making friends and sharing content,” McCoy says. Endicott agreed, a sparkle in her eye. Both are extra cheerful, clearly dreamy, unabashed do-gooder types in the best possible way. In fact, we need more just like them. But first things first. Endicott and McCoy began their collaboration at the Oklahoma State University Foundation where he was an intern in her department in 2005. She affectionately refers to him as her “business partner in crime and favorite little brother.” The two immediately bonded over what they both describe as the art of fundraising, which they gird with known best practices. It’s been a brilliantly successful strategy, one which ultimately led them to the INTEGRIS Foundation, where each spent a decade quite successfully helping

to transform that organization’s fundraising philosophy and approach. “We subscribe to the theories of fundraising, but we focus on the real, the genuine, the vulnerable. The stories. It’s a disruptive take on how to connect, how to story-tell,” Endicott says. Last summer, the collaborators decided it was time to walk their talk and start the rather meta nonprofit they’d been dreaming of for years. In the middle of a pandemic. And there’s more. McCoy and his wife Candice, who boldly told her husband to jettison his corporate career and just go for it, are the parents of two sets of twins (three girls and a boy), ages 5 and 8. Endicott and husband Kyle have two daughters, ages 6 and 10. He also encouraged Endicott and McCoy to take the plunge, despite the challenges. But dreamers tend to marry other dreamers, so with full spousal support, McCoy and Endicott founded We are for Good, hired a former INTEGRIS colleague, Julie Confer, to be their producer and editor, and off they went. “We are for Good also provides resources for the nonprofit community,” says McCoy. “Nonprofits

are often resource-strapped. We offer a place to plug in and talk shop. We’re building a community.” No big surprise that nonprofits are hungry for such a resource. The massive success of their podcast has been a surprise, though. “The night we launched, we’d gone viral,” Endicott says. Before they knew it, We are for Good had rocketed up the podcast charts in a couple of categories and was being downloaded all over the world. Three are released each week. “We realized that people are hungry for good news. We tell the stories of people who are here for the bigger mission, people who have really dug in,” she says. Interviewees include Sara Cunningham, founder of Free Mom Hugs, Matt Larson, founder of the Human Improvement Project and Matt Hangen, CEO of the water charity Water4, plus many more. Ostensibly, these are meant to be best practice and inspiration resources for those in the nonprofit industry, and they are, but they’re also terrifically powerful stories, perfect for when you need a lift.

It is very apparent that Omni Oklahoma City Hotel is committed to being a large part of the Oklahoma community; even the design of the hotel is rich in Oklahoma history. We would love to understand the many ways Oklahoma’s heritage can be seen throughout the hotel. Much of the hotel’s interior color palate was inspired by the warm prairie grasses and the deep blue skies found in Oklahoma. The design was also inspired by many of the natural textures found in the state, such as stone, wood, and leather. You will see many tributes to the state. For example, the chevron pattern found throughout the hotel represents the scissortail flycatcher state bird, and the wall lamps in our guest rooms represent the oil pump jacks you see throughout the state, including the State Capitol grounds. Tell us about the leadership style you must have to successfully lead a large team that serves guest 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The key to being successful is surrounding yourself with

strong managers and hourly associates. Solid objectives and expectations need to be established and communicated so that every associate in the building is on the same page. Nobody in this hotel is more important than anyone else. We are all here because each of us plays a part in achieving our end objectives. You need to ensure you have an environment that holds each other accountable and you need to stay engaged with all of your associates. Most importantly, have fun! I also think you need to have a style that includes a great deal of common sense. Although in this business you will never be able to say “You have seen it all” because there is frequently something new you encounter, most situations that occur are solved through deductive reasoning and common sense. When you are not working, what do you enjoy doing? I like to spend time with my family and travel when time allows. I also like to get out and experience some of the unique restaurants found here in the Oklahoma City area.

Omni Hotels and Resorts is world-wide. As someone who has been in the hospitality industry for decades, it’s safe to say you have traveled extensively. If our readers were to travel anywhere in the world and stay at an Omni hotel, which location have you enjoyed the most in your travels? Although every Omni is unique and first class, I really enjoyed my stay at The Omni Grove Park Inn in Asheville, North Carolina. It is truly a one-of-a-kind hotel located in a beautiful part of the country. Finally, what is one of your life’s “luxuries” that you enjoy? I enjoy an ice-cold beer after a long day of work!

alking into Mokara Spa in Omni Hotel is like stepping into a sunlit utopia—one where self-care and relaxation are top priorities. Simple, minimalist design details bring a sense of ease and tranquility. A feeling that there’s truly nowhere else you would rather be. The newly opened spa sits elegantly on the hotel’s third level, overlooking downtown Oklahoma City and boasts a variety of services and amenities. From massages and facials to hair care and relaxation rooms, there’s something for everyone. And the best part? The spa is open to the public—a true testament to the warmth and tranquility the experienced staff so effortlessly exudes here. We have a feeling you’ll want to stay a while. Here, we chat with Spa Director Marcy Matney about how to choose the right massage for you, practicing self-care for your health, and her focus on making Mokara Spa feel like home. Tell me about your background in the spa industry. Originally, I was a customer in the spa because I was in a very high-stress job in the advertising industry in Atlanta, Georgia. I would find a massage therapist wherever I was and take care of my health needs that way. I realized spa work was going to become leading edge, so I went into it as a businesswoman about 25 years ago. I started my first small office in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Since then, I’ve had offices in Texas, Arkansas, and Oklahoma, and have also worked as a medical massage therapist and teacher. It seems like a culmination of my experiences, leading me to where I’m supposed to be now. Did you have a hand in choosing the services at Mokara Spa? Mokara Spa has over 50 hotel properties and they have their own menus, so we try to replicate that. Some people come to see this location because they love Omni and expect to see what they typically see at a Mokara Spa. With that, I’ve instructed my staff to follow the protocol of each massage, but the number one priority is that we take care of the specific needs of the customer. Our bodies are all different, so we keep that in mind. People need self-care and relaxation now more than ever before. Which massage is the most relaxing one, in your opinion? With COVID, we need to take care of our immune systems. Getting massages keeps your immune system up. It’s a way of telling your body thank you. If you’re grateful to your body, it will be grateful back to you. The Swedish massage (Mokara Signature) is the most relaxing service. I recommend the 80-minute session because it allows the therapist to focus on the upper back. Everyone has upper back issues right now because that’s where we hold stress. The customer will always tell us what’s going on with their bodies, and if the technician feels like there is

a service that will serve the customer’s needs better, they’ll recommend it at that time. If customers change their mind when they get in the room, we can always accommodate that. hat are some unique services offered? Which massage is your personal favorite? We have a room offered for bridal parties, a makeup artist on staff for brides and special occasions, haircuts, men’s beard trimming, manicures and pedicures, six types of massages, and more. My favorite massage is the Himalayan Rock massage, and it’s very new in the spa world. The rocks have different shapes the therapists can take, like ovals, hearts, or whatever shapes the therapist thinks the client needs. It’s soothing on the body and exfoliates the skin, which is especially important during this time when our skin is drier than usual. What sets Mokara Spa apart from other spas? I have been working at, owning, or a customer at almost every spa in the state of Oklahoma. Without a doubt, this is the nicest spa in the entire state. It offers so much. You can come early in the

morning and stay all day. We’ll get you food, a glass of wine, mimosas, an iced tea—whatever it is you want, we can do. That’s the beauty of this spa—it’s a true day spa and you can be here all day with no rush to leave. COVID has required us to be more cautious than ever before. What precautions is Mokara Spa taking during this time? The state of Oklahoma has regulations for us, and we’ve upped it quite a bit. We’ve left a 25-minute gap between every service so we can have time to clean before the next session begins. We have a deep cleaning service every single night as well. My therapists do their cleaning and then the hotel staff also deep cleans. What’s the most rewarding aspect about being a part of this opening? To watch it start from the ground up and see what it’s going to become. I feel like it’s the biggest blessing because I’ve been a part of these things in the middle or at the end where I was trying to fix the wrongs that had been created before I got there. But at Mokara Spa, it’s like it’s my child and I get to grow it up the way I think it should be raised. That’s the best part for me.

How would you like customers to feel when they enter the Mokara Spa doors, and how would you like them to feel when they leave? When they come in, I want them to feel like they’re coming home. When they leave, I want them to feel so relaxed that they need to call a cab! I always felt guilty when customers were rushed to leave after a service, but that’s not going to happen here. Customers can come and stay as long as they’d like to. And if they’re on a time crunch or a lunch break, they can freshen up, shower, and head back to the office. What would you tell someone who is apprehensive to try a massage or a spa service for the first time? To me, watching a person coming to a spa for the first time is like Christmas morning and I’ve bought you a gift that I cannot wait for you to open. From the moment you walk into the Mokara Spa doors, we’re going to make you feel comforted and relaxed, and I really made sure that I hired a team that would embody that feeling. Although we’re the nicest spa, we’re still local Oklahoma women and men and we have that warmth. Mokara Spa will feel like your home away from home.

t’s not that Kari Watkins was downplaying the unprecedented logistical juggernaut of postponing, rescheduling and ultimately taking the 2020 running of the internationally acclaimed Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon virtual, it’s more that the purity of her organization’s mission makes daunting decisions simple and clear, even if they are difficult. Everything about the organization is a collaboration of community volunteers, family members, survivors and first responders who helped build and continue to maintain its mission. “We just had to put the right attitude on, be respectful and honor the families and survivors. We were not the only ones facing obstacles. Everyone has had obstacles this year,” Watkins said. She’s been the executive director of the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum since 1999; her career with the nonprofit began in 1996, when she became the director of communications, the organization’s first paid staff position. Today she directs a staff of 28. You could say the woman and the institution have grown up together. Watkins was just 30 years old when she took the communications job, and in the decades between now and then she’s overseen the community process, fundraising and construction of the Outdoor Symbolic Memorial, with its Field of Empty Chairs, Reflecting Pool, Children’s Area and Rescuers’ Orchard; the fundraising, visioning and construction of the Museum, with its 35 interactive features as well as hundreds of hours of video and artifacts which show visitors incredibly personal and humanizing detail; and the launch of the Memorial Marathon as well as numerous additional fundraising efforts and educational initiatives. She also reconnected with a classmate and former colleague, now her husband of 21 years, Hardy Watkins, during her tenure. The pair had met when both were journalism students at the University of Oklahoma and later worked together as news producers at Oklahoma City’s KFOR-TV. As Kari was undertaking the task of overseeing the construction of the Memorial and Museum, the pair’s paths crossed again and never uncrossed. Hardy was the owner’s representative for the Memorial and Museum. The couple has two children, Ford, a college student and Caroline, in high school. In 2001, the first Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon was run. That year, nearly 5,000 people participated. Now, more than 25,000 runners from around the world have come to Oklahoma City each April to run the marathon or to take part in one of the four other races. In 2020, the running components of the race went virtual and a cycling element was added; Watkins says discussions are underway to retain cycling for 2021. Watkins has overseen the creation of countless

educational programs, field trips, essay contests, lesson plans, conferences, events and activities designed to educate people of all ages about what happened in Oklahoma City, why it happened, and why the threat of terrorism, domestic or otherwise, will continue as long as we accept divisiveness as the norm. “We work to find common ground on sacred ground,” Watkins says. “We ought to always be a place where people can come together. We can’t ever forget what we’ve done. Together. The bomb didn’t discriminate. It killed people who were rich, poor, black, white, brown...people from different parts of town…168 people of all kinds. An American soldier attacked his own government. That was unheard of. But people came together and they are still coming together. I take all of that really personally. We can’t give up just because times are hard.” And she certainly has not. In April, the Memorial will complete its latest multi-million dollar campaign to continue the dialogue with each visitor it encounters. Co-chaired by Sally Starling, whose mother Polly Nichols is a survivor and longtime Memorial & Museum trustee, and former Oklahoma Attorney General and fundraising guru Mike Turpen, the $10 million campaign is entitled “Looking Back, Thinking Forward.” The fundraising initiative will, through new programs and platforms, continue to deliver the Museum’s crucial messages. Through comprehensive curriculum and cutting-edge new programs designed for young and old alike, we can become a global thought leader on healing, forgiveness, strength and resilience in the wake of tragedy (from the Memorial and Museum’s website). Fundraising is an ongoing effort, perhaps made more so during times like these. Without it, the organization would not exist. Although the Memorial & Museum enjoys an excellent partnership with the U.S. National Parks Service, there is no annual appropriation from it or any government agency to sustain it. “The Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum does not receive any annual operating funds from the federal, state or local government. Museum admissions, store sales, the OKC Memorial Marathon, earnings from an endowment and private fundraising allow the Memorial & Museum to be self-sustaining,” Watkins says. Under Watkins’ leadership, the Museum has won numerous awards, including The Videographer Award of Excellence, a Gold American Alliance of Museums MUSE, the FBI Director’s Community Leadership Award, and multiple Addys, PRSA Awards, and OklahomaTourism RedBud Awards. Watkins’ personal honors include being named the 2000 Women in Communications Byliner Award, the 2005 Journal Record Woman

of the Year, the 2006 Stanley Draper Award for Community Excellence, the 2011 University of Oklahoma Gaylord College of Journalism Distinguished Alumni Award, 2016 Lee Allan Smith Oklahoma Legacy Award and the 2017 John F. Kennedy Community Service Award. She serves as a commissioner for the OKC Convention and Visitors Bureau, on the MAPS3 Scissortail Park Sub-Committee, on the Board of Visitors for the University of Oklahoma’s Gaylord College of Journalism & Mass Communications, an elder at Crossings Community Church and an active member of the Casady Parents’ Organization. Watkins is unflagging in her devotion to the people who are the foundation of the Memorial, many of whom were either present or had family members near or inside the Alfred P. Murrah

Federal Building for that awful detonation in 1995. There’s a tragic ongoing lesson here; it is what drives Watkins each and every day to ensure that we all have the opportunity to learn and grow from it. “We’ve got to do better,” she says. “We’ve got to be willing to meet in the middle of the street. We can do better. It’s within us.”

SPRING TREND FORECAST The year 2020 was a peculiar, uneventful year for the fashion world. Sweat sets and oversized clothing seemed to take precedence over trendy, formal pieces—a reach for comfort in a wildly uncomfortable time. BY KIANA MORIDI

ow as we’ve stepped into a new year, the fashion world seems to be entering a fresh awakening. Eager to return to some sense of normalcy, industry tastemakers predict a comeback of bright tones, wide-leg pants, and yes, dare we say it, pant suits and staple piece blazers. To learn more about the style forecast for 2021, we chat with local stores and buyers for all things trending.

What are some Spring trends you’re seeing in the fashion industry? Crocheted apparel and footwear, faux leather, especially in shorts, continued tiedye popularity, and smaller handbags that transition from day to night. Can you give examples of how to wear these trends? Mix and match trends and fabrics. Crochet top with faux leather short, paired with a cloud clutch in a neutral tone and gold chain necklace! Or if you’re more of a classic person, a white button down, skinnies, flats and a gold chain necklace or cloud clutch are an easy way to integrate a trend and make it personal. What are some general fashion trends to keep an eye out for in 2021? Tie-dye hasn’t gone away and won’t be going anywhere any time soon—it’s year-round! Gold chains continue to be strong (chunky or delicate), and large totes are classic and here to stay. The cloud clutch (Botegga look-alike) is also one to keep an eye out for. How do your Balliets buyers spot a trend before it becomes one? It’s a combination of exploring the markets and

keeping an eye on our favorite designers, while also keeping in mind what our customers will love. There will always be trends but finding what feels good and looks good is the happy medium. Any accessory or shoe trends to be on the lookout for? Raffia, woven like Bottega, crochet, chain detail, mid-heel mules, and backless flats Trending colors or patterns? Tiedye, crochet, gingham, neutral-toned clutches. What’s your personal favorite Spring 2021 trend? “My favorite trend is top and bottom matching sets. It’s super chic and looks lux. Whether it’s a knit jogger set to lounge at home or a matching poplin set for work, the trend can be worn anywhere. Add a pop of color with a handbag. Also be on the lookout for some occasional nods to the 90’s - florals and eyelet textiles and higher-rise wide leg pants. Can you give examples of how to wear these trends? The key is to incorporate trend pieces into your existing style and make them your own. It’s the season to step out of your comfort zone a bit. Play with color blocking by pairing contrasting shapes or hues, like pairing a fitted top with a wide leg pant. Add a versatile, bold print dress to your wardrobe with a platform sandal. Or just switch up those skinnies for a slouchy 90’s jean.

How do Rosegold buyers spot a trend before it becomes one? I’m a people watcher and I soak up inspiration when I travel. I think of fashion as an everevolving snapshot of the world around us. Trending colors or patterns? It will be a colorful season, with plenty of lilac, yellow, sky blue, lime and poppy red to go around, with an array of prints that range from cheery florals to bold graphic designs. Any trends or pieces that are popular at Rosegold right now? Comfy and cozy has been on repeat for a while now, but people are so ready to get dressed and get out there again! What are some general fashion trends to keep an eye out for in 2021? Over-the-top feminine looks from 2020 still prevail, such as sleeve details like a puffed or gathered shoulder. Florals also still reign with everything from tiny “ditsy prints” to large and bold patterns. Tie-dye is also still going forward this year and provides a colorful alternative to floral with a visual kick in contrasting color combinations.

The skinny jean and pants emphasis will be transferred to a fuller leg. Think wide leg denim, flares, and crop flares. Or joggers in luxuriant fabric like satins that can be dressed up or down are a novel twist. Waistlines in pants and denim are still high to accommodate shorter tops as a favored silhouette, especially in a younger crowd. Casual comfort is huge this season in what we used to call “sweat sets” with WFH continuing in this era of avoiding public workspaces due to COVID. It’s been a favorite category for myself and an embraced area in my shop this last year. A more sophisticated take on this “lounge look” is done in finer cotton sweater-like knits with a touch of poly or spandex to retain shape. As the season progresses and gets warmer, the sweat pant in a short version, matching to its coordinating top is especially of the moment.

EDEN What are some Spring trends you’re seeing in the fashion industry? Casual Meets Dress Wear - When we head back to the office or to happy hour, there will likely be a blending of the casual clothing we’ve been wearing at home with the dressing up we were used to. Think blazers with t-shirts, hoodies and tennis shoes, a bold blazer and a pair of slacks or chinos. It will be about mixing and matching dressing up and dressing down with an emphasis on re-wearing. It will still be important to look polished and put together in the office, but the definition of polished will be different. Back to the Basics - So many factors will drive a focus on minimalism and looking for value. While we still want to look presentable and fashionable, clothing that will last through the seasons will be a focus. Made to last, classic wardrobe builders can be mixed, matched and extended, creating a wardrobe that focuses on quality over quantity. Think neutral tones, blazers, and complementing colors that can

be mixed and matched. Fashion will shift as people are looking for quality, lasting pieces that make them feel good. Suit Up - Prior to COVID, we were already seeing the revival of suiting up. As corporate became more relaxed, wearing a suit was no longer a stuffy necessity, but a style choice. Since lockdown, we’ve been living in athleisure and are Zoomed out. I predict that when we are back in the world, we will run back to tailored looks. A tailored suit won’t just be a way to shop local, but will be a sign of hope and better days to come.

ecently, Jessica Elliot took me on a tour of her lovingly restored Bauhaus home located on a corner just two blocks from the University of Oklahoma campus. The home was built in 1936 for Dr. Frank Armon Melton, a well-known professor of geology, and his wife, Clarice Aldridge Melton. Its distinctive architecture stands out from other homes in the neighborhood. The Bauhaus style was rarely used for homes in the Midwest, even though Bauhaus has had a tremendous influence on architecture. The style arose from the Staatliches Bauhaus, a German art school that valued craftsmanship, raw materials, and efficient function as integral to fine art. The philosophy behind Bauhaus structures— simple, clean lines, beauty of raw materials, and careful use of space and light—epitomizes the idea of “form follows function.” The Melton home is a fine example: concrete block construction thickly plastered in and out, casement windows, outside staircases of simple wrought iron and industrial pipe, and sleek hardware and fixtures. An unusual but practical extra is an underground storm shelter large enough for several families. The Meltons raised their three children in the distinctive home and it remained in the family until it sold in 2017 to Jessica Elliot, who wanted to renovate it for her family. During renovation, every attention was given to materials integrity, quality construction, and accessibility, as well as harmony with Bauhaus style. Jessica was the designer, and, intent upon maintaining the integrity of the classic design, she oversaw every step of the renovation, including adding a master suite and serving bar to the ground floor, constructing an additional bath and closet upstairs, and updating the kitchen area. The transition from old to new is faultless. A serving bar and refrigerator and a bath for the new, wheelchair-accessible master suite are in what was the carriage house. The modernist hardware and fixtures match the home’s style, and the original exposed concrete carriage house window is preserved. The new bedroom has a large closet, casement style windows, and 12-inch thick exterior walls just like the rest of the home. A glass wall with outdoor access to the side yard brings light into the addition. The new hardwood floors are also perfectly matched to the refinished originals. All windows have been replaced with high efficiency ones custom-made to echo the original casements and, together with the thick stucco walls, make the house unusually quiet as well as energy efficient. The kitchen is now open to the dining and living area. With new minimalist cabinets, simple, timeless hardware and modernist style appliances, the kitchen is keeping with the Bauhaus aesthetic. The white and grey quartz cabinet tops in the kitchen and bar area are beautiful, and just a touch of 21st-century glitz shows up in the glossy silver and black tile backsplashes.

he upstairs bath, newly tiled and modernized, still has the lovely porcelain tub. Space for an additional bath and extra closets has been carved out of the master bedroom. The all-white walls allow sunlight from the banks of corner windows to bounce off interior walls and curved plaster corners, making the three bedrooms seem lit from within. The Melton children would have appreciated the change–a new bath for the girls and a bedroom for each child. An additional living space was above the garage. It’s become a stylish studio apartment with its

own address and utilities. The original apartment had one entire wall of glass with unusual window inserts, and the glass wall is preserved, overlooking the large side yard and patio. As I stood at the wall, I could almost envision a springtime graduate student and faculty party spilling out onto the lawn. The Meltons were friends with many OU faculty, especially Oscar B. Jacobson, founder of what is now the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art. I imagined discussions of new geological discoveries, atomic energy, European and American political movements, contemporary art and theater. The

close to 90-year-old structure, avant-guard at the time and now restored and modernized, seems to be awaiting another round of such gatherings. After three years of restoration, as the Elliot family readied to move, they realized that it was just not the right time. Their current home is three houses away from Jessica’s elderly father. The ability to check on him quickly and the access that their children had to his home were more important than fulfilling their dream of living in the unique architectural gem. The rare Bauhaus home is now for sale—it’s just waiting for another lawn party.
