ARTISAN TILE STUDIO

WITH SYDNYE STEEN ARTISAN TILE STUDIO

design speaks A

s I sat at my desk jotting down ideas for this article, a popular advertising slogan from the late 60’s popped into my mind. “You’ve come a long way, baby!” I smiled and nodded. I have come a long way. My industry has. And, so has my business. My father was an extremely talented stone fabricator. In 2000, I began working with him in his business, watching him create beautiful countertops from slabs of earthly materials, turning visions into touchable pieces of functional artwork. He was an amazing craftsman. Soon, I developed a keen interest in tile and was fascinated about its origins, its styles, and its composition. I discovered that for thousands of centuries, the tiles which had covered buildings, arches, roofs and walkways, walls, and floors were often blended with other forms of ceramics such as terracotta, metal, glass, and mosaic or were composed

entirely of those materials. What inspired me most was how these intricate, ornate, and one-of-a-kind tiles were all crafted by hand—the true definition of artisanship. I knew I had found my passion. A few years after my father’s retirement in 2011, I opened Artisan Tile Studio. Working alongside talented interior designers who have strong vision and want something extra special for their clients, my dream to offer a unique and personalized service to meet their design goals grew even stronger. Tile selections in Oklahoma at that time were extremely limited and often mass-produced, and I knew there had to be more out there. I began looking for new lines and discovered our industry had taken on wings and grown to unlimited possibilities. My quest was underway!

HOME & DESIGN

Today, Artisan Tile Studio proudly offers over 75 lines and is fortunate to work with some of the best artisans in the world—from California to Italy, Oregon to Morocco, Nashville to Spain, Wyoming to Mexico, and New York to points all over the globe. The true handcrafted tile and custom design capabilities we now have available are only limited by one’s imagination. Here are three of my very favorites, exclusive to Artisan Tile Studio:

TILES OF EZRA

New Ravenna (newravenna.com) Founded in 1992 by artist and designer Sara Baldwin, New Ravenna has the world’s most exquisite collection of handcrafted custom stone and glass mosaics for both home and commercial installations. From the small town of Exmore, on Virginia’s Eastern Shore, the New Ravenna team of over 100 artisans proudly creates and shares unique mosaics, including decorative borders, murals, field tile, and medallions. Through a collaboration with many talented artists and designers, their custom mosaics makes spaces feel beautiful, renewed, and connected through unique and transformative art pieces.

with artisan tile makers in Mexico, Morocco, and Vietnam to create Tiles of Ezra: exquisite Zellige field and mosaic tile designs filled with vivacious and exotic cultural references, driven by a mantra of promoting the sustainability of craftsmanship. “We have always tried to articulate to our clients that when you are buying from Tiles of Ezra, you are not just buying a product. You are buying a handmade piece of work, which has passed through the hands of another person. An artisan who has a name, a family, and a story of his or her own,” says Ezra.

Clay Daisies Tile Company (claydaisies.com)

KASBAH HANDMADE

Every product from New Ravenna can be customized to meet the needs of any customer and design vision—tile can be tumbled, honed, or treated to create distinctive styles, subtle shade variations, and textures—resulting in a custom, one-of-a-kind work of art in mosaic tile.

Tiles of Ezra (850atilestudio.com) Georgia Ezra, a visionary interior designer from Australia, was unable to find a tile range that would facilitate the needs of her design projects. Taking matters into her own hands, this treasure hunter and market maven at heart searched the globe for inspiration and resources. She forged partnerships

Kim Harper is the woman behind the tile at Clay Daisies. She is a self-taught potter and tile maker with a background in Interior Design, Architecture, and Art Education. Twenty years ago, she was asked by a client to create custom tile for a kitchen, and Kim’s dream was born. She began her company in 2016, handmaking tile in her home studio, and now has sustainably crafted an amazing collection designed to stand the test of time, both visually and structurally. With an extensive color palette and countless shapes and sizes, Kim works alongside homeowners, designers, and architects to bring their visions to life with custom patterns and styles. And, in true artisan fashion, everything from Clay Daisies Tile is hand rolled, hand cut, and hand glazed. All clay and tile materials are repurposed; scrap is recycled to make trims and samples, and any tile that doesn’t pass quality control is donated to a local school for mosaic projects. I love that her standards are helping teach young students to continue this artisan craft. Tile truly is my passion and I welcome you to visit Artisan Tile Studio at our Western Avenue location to see these beautiful lines and many more. From ceramics to glazed basalt, marble to glass and even

precious metals, tile is much more than a mere floor covering; tiles are pieces of art that make a grand statement. I love to search the world for new and exciting offerings and bring them to Oklahoma City. And I’m especially excited to show you a rendering of our new 7,000 square-foot showroom and gallery under construction at 310 West Wilshire. With a museum look and feel, it will feature an atelier studio where we can meet to create custom mosaic pieces that blend your favorite materials and colorways. We look forward to opening by the end of the year and hope you will connect with us socially to keep up with our progress.

BUSINESS

We just relocated to our gorgeous new dental office, and we couldn’t be more excited to welcome our family of patients through our doors! Building this office started with years of planning and a vision that provides our patients with the most pleasant dental experience imaginable. Everything—literally everything—is comforting. The beautiful color palette, the well-appointed waiting room, the children’s nook, the dental chairs, the music, the always-fresh flowers, and the overhead lighting provide a comforting space. We truly believe that the level of detail and effort we have poured into our new space is unmatched and serves as a testament to the detailed attention we give to each patient’s smile. What attracted you to the profession of dentistry? I wanted to be a part of a healthcare profession that would make a positive impact on someone else’s life and offer the opportunity to help others create and maintain a state of wellness. These things, along with my passion for artistry, precision, and science attracted me to the field of dentistry. My career has been rewarding for me on a multitude of levels, mainly because of the relationships I have developed with my patient family. Being able to use my craft to create a new smile that brings out a person’s confidence, self-esteem, and raw emotion is one of the most powerful things about my profession. If you could have a heartfelt discussion with a prospective patient who may be apprehensive about going to the dentist, what would you tell them? Patients need to prioritize care over cost when it comes to their dental care. We all want great care for the best value. Generally speaking, when someone is expecting to receive great care, exceptional skill, sound judgment and the cheapest cost, one factor has to give way; cheaper is not always better. Patients need to take these sacrifices into consideration when picking a dental provider.

22 LUXI E R E

I find that most patients are typically misinformed or completely uninformed about their dental benefits coverage. Additionally, many people assume that if a provider is not “in-network,” then they do not accept their insurance. This is a false assumption, and more often than not it costs no more or very little out of pocket to see the provider of your choice. The best approach is to find a dental office you feel will provide the best care for you. Call the office of interest and speak to the insurance coordinator. At our office, we provide a complimentary benefit check to better understand your insurance so we know what services are reimbursed and which are not. At Sorgen Dentistry, we have to be very selective about which dental insurance plans we contract with. For one, I won’t allow insurance companies to dictate what is best for my patients and their unique situation. Secondly, I seek to be the best dentist that I can be, consistently elevating the level of care that I provide and materials I use to achieve the ideal outcome for my patient, and I can’t let insurance companies’ fee reductions devalue that. Lastly, I want to have the most talented team serving my patients’ every dental need. I work with an extraordinary group of women who are professional, treat my patients well, and embrace our core values. Retaining talented employees comes at a price, and they are worth it! Where is dentistry today? Dentistry as a whole is being marketed as a commodity rather than a service. This is evidenced by the catchy advertisements that patients and consumers are bombarded with offering too-good-to-be-true pricing on crowns, implants, and other similar services. In addition, dental insurance companies look to drive down their costs while increasing profits. Providers who are “in-network” with insurance companies take massive fee reductions, forcing them to double the amount of people they see in a day in order to turn a profit. What this could potentially mean for the patient/consumer is less time spent during appointments, which can lead to reduced care and compassion. This shift in dentistry diminishes the very skill set that dentists like me have invested time, finances, effort, and energy to perfect. A crown isn’t just a “crown”—it takes professional judgement to recommend the right treatment for my patient based on their individual circumstances, a very high level of precision, and my ability to provide the patient with the stellar results that he/she deserves. Additionally, there has also been a significant increase in investorowned, corporate dental offices across not only Oklahoma, but the entire United States. Typically, the dentists working in these offices are being managed by non-dentists creating “quotas” and incentives which push non-covered or elective procedures. Such business models can negatively influence diagnosis and treatment decisions made for the patient. I pray that dentistry can continue to be a profession built on relationships and mutual trust, and not a commodity-based model that so many offices have turned it into. I have a personal relationship with my patients, one that I have had the privilege of earning over time. My team members know all of our patients by name. We have spent a personal moment with our patients over many weeks, sometimes months, improving the state of their health, smile, and their life. Every patient deserves to be heard, advocated for, and treated with the utmost respect.

BUSINESS

2020 has been a challenging year for us all, but difficult times ignite the opportunity for personal and professional growth. My wife and I have had our fair share of sleepless nights during this building project - how are we going to manage virtual learning for our three children while running a business, growing our patient base, building a state-of-the-art office, and still have time for sleep and self-care? The power of faith and the love and support from our family and friends has seen us through. We have been humbled, over and over again by the support our patients have shown us this year. We are thrilled that, in the midst of a pandemic, our patients feel safe coming to our office. These things reassure me that our exceptional services and compassionate care can never - will never - be compromised and that we must be doing something right.

The Social Order, under Mankin’s direction, has also become a bold force in philanthropic circles. “We do a lot with Cleats for Kids,” she says. “We are very involved with lots of organizations. We don’t do a lot of traditional marketing, but we maintain partnerships with nonprofits. Brian is very involved with many organizations and he really tries not to say no to any of them. eff Kretchmar is the COO of the OKC Energy FC, Oklahoma City’s professional soccer club. He has been with the Energy since day one and has made Oklahoma City his home. Kretchmar and his team’s impact on the Oklahoma City community reaches far beyond the entertainment they provide to fans. Learn more about what makes the OKC Energy FC successful and the different ways they give back to our community. Tell our readers a little about Energy FC. What makes Oklahoma City the right place for a professional soccer team? Energy FC found its home in OKC in 2014 and plays in the USL Championship league. As a top 50 city, Oklahoma City deserves to have professional soccer team. Soccer is a game of passion and unity, and I believe that speaks directly to the spirit of our city.

Knowing the players and the organization, how have you seen Energy FC give back to the community, not only in Oklahoma, but across the globe? We have many amazing programs and, more importantly, people. Whether it’s our Gulfport Energy Sidekicks program that pairs athletes from Special Olympics Oklahoma and Autism Oklahoma directly with our players to participate in many fun and engaging activities or our support of Devon Front Line Hero, we believe in supporting every aspect of our community. Also, $2 of every ticket sold goes back to support Fields and Futures, and 15% of our concessions goes back to Oklahoma City Public Schools to help build brighter futures. We have also started a foundation, Energy Assist, to provide youth with new soccer equipment and trained mentor coaches, continuing our legacy of giving and growth in OKC.

BUSINESS

Our players and staff are given the time, ability and encouragement to make an impact in our community. On the other side of that, how has the community helped support Energy FC? Energy FC has some of the best fans in the world. They show up, they yell, they support not only us, but also follow our mission of making OKC the best place to live, work and play. How did you get into the world of professional soccer? I have worked in sports for 20 years and have been with Energy FC since it began. Of all my experiences, this has been the most rewarding because of the connections and unity that soccer provides. What do you love most about what you do? In sports we work 365 days a year so that we can bring our soccer and our passion to the field less than 40 of those days. Seeing the smiles and cheers from our fans at every home match is what makes me love our work. For 90 minutes, our fans put aside differences and life issues; they forget about whatever is going on outside of that stadium. For those 90 minutes they can scream and cheer for their team with a complete stranger and walk away with a new friend. It’s pretty magical to me.

28 LUXI E R E

What makes Oklahoma City fans different from others? Oklahomans are born champions. It’s not just the final outcome, they want to win each and every second of the match. What was the best piece of advice you were given when you were first starting your career? Work harder than everyone and when you think you are done, you have at least another 20% to give. Where do you hope to see professional soccer in Oklahoma in the next ten years? We want professional soccer in OKC to be what our fans want it to be—successful, thriving and part of the natural landscape of our great city and state. What is one thing you enjoy doing when you are not at work? I love to cook and entertain. When you work in entertainment, there is always a show to put on for someone. For anyone that has never been to an Energy FC game, what are they missing? A community that is unlike any other in sport in OKC. For 90 minutes, our fans come together, scream, cheer and yell for their team. Our players take care of the soccer; our fans make it an adventure.

What is your luxiere? Good gin, time with friends, and watches. I mean, who doesn’t love a quality timepiece? What is the biggest lesson you have learned in your career? I cannot be successful without helping everyone on the team be successful. We rise and fall together. — KATI HANNA IS A PARTNER WITH THE METTISE GROUP and has been consulting with growing companies for more than two decades. INTERVIEW WITH CHRISTY BRUNER

mira bird INTERVIEW BY KIANA MORIDI

alking into Mira Bird is like stepping into a free spirit’s daydream—neutral tones, macramé decor, lush greenery, and a beachy feel that quickly transports you to your own personal oasis. Now open in Edmond, Mira Bird is a thoughtfully curated blend of eclectic and artful goods, perfect for those who prefer the more unique things in life. Here, we chat with the store owner, Christy Bruner, about holiday products, must-have items, and who the Mira Bird customer is. What’s the story behind the name? In Latin, Mira means wonderful, strange, remarkable, amazing, surprising, extraordinary. I hope that’s what customers find when they walk in the door—something unique and wonderful. Something that inspires them. What drew you to opening a store after working in graphic design? After 20 years in graphic design, I really needed a change and a different creative outlet. I couldn’t bear the thought of sitting behind a computer for much longer and really felt the pull to build something that could change the trajectory of where I was headed. I’ve worked in retail off and on throughout my life and I’ve always enjoyed the creativity, the connections you make, and the people you meet from all walks of life. The opportunity presented itself; I signed a lease and jumped all in! What are some must-have products in Mira Bird right now? I have some fantastic homewares, charcuterie boards, lux hand wash and lotions, candles, and great pillows. We have new items arriving daily. What are some products to be on the lookout for this fall? Anything with texture! Items offering a “found” vibe with an uncluttered, cozy feel. I’m really loving the pampas grass and bleached palms we have in store right now! Any holiday products that will be in store? An assortment of unique gifts in multiple price points, not to mention holiday decor, soaps, and candles.

Who is the Mira Bird customer? What is their aesthetic and how do they spend their days? The Mira Bird customer is someone who has their own style and is a free spirit. Their home is a place layered with intentional items that are unique, inspiring, or have a story—a carefully curated and eclectic blend that brings them joy in spite of what’s trending. If you could offer the Mira Bird customer one thing, what would it be? Mimosas and charcuterie! Anything that brings you joy, connection, and good conversation. How do you decide which products should be in store? I aim to offer an eclectic blend of artful goods in spite of what may be trendy. Things with an interesting story or appearance. I work to offer items made by a real person whenever I am able and where it makes sense. Tell me a little bit about the range of products Mira Bird carries. We offer a wide assortment of home decor goods, stationery items, and unique beauty selections. We have hand-painted stationery, fun matches and candles, lux handwash and hand lotion, lots of planters, pillows, assorted cookbooks, throws, and unique kitchen items. Any events offered at Mira Bird that we should know about? When we aren’t in the middle of a pandemic, I offer various workshops. In the past, we have offered charcuterie demos for girl’s night out, floral arranging, wreath demos, and macramé demos. Future plans? In addition to offering a wider assortment of unique products, I’d love to someday open another store in Stillwater or Norman. To shop Mira Bird, visit the shop at 3400 S Bryant, Ste. 130 in Edmond, or check out the site at mirabird.com.

GERALD WORK

keeping it classic STORY BY MICHAEL KINNEY P H OTO G R A P HY BY K E N N O N B RYC E

G

erald Work is an extraordinary vintage automobile collector. He’s got an impeccable eye for classic cars, yet he isn’t worried about enjoying them: he doesn’t believe they should be put on a pedestal only for show. Work likes nothing more than to slide behind the wheel of any one of his ten classics and go for a spin. “I love old cars because you can drive them anywhere,” Work said. “You don’t have to be afraid of going out and driving the car.” His collection is filled with breathtaking classics. Perhaps his most-loved is his 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS, the embodiment of his belief that classics are meant to be driven and not just admired. After trading a 1969 Camaro for it eight years ago, he restored the classic to its original style, with no intention of hiding it in a garage.

LUXI E R E 45

LIFESTYLE

Work enjoys the process of restoring his stable of classic cars, but unlike less daring collectors, he’s not precious about it. “I want them to be nice,” Work said. “But I don’t want them to be so nice that I can’t drive them.” That encapsulates Work’s Chevelle perfectly. When he turns the key in the ignition, the engine roars with a ferocity that can be felt by anyone standing nearby. With a black interior, black rims and tinted windows, his Chevelle makes a distinctive impression when Work takes it out to run errands or go to the gym. “If you jump in the Chevelle and you go down to the gas station, everybody loves it,” Work said. “You don’t have to be afraid of going out and driving the car.” Like many enthusiasts who find themselves enthralled by classic cars, Work’s fascination began when he was a young boy. His father was a painter and car builder, so he was introduced to the car

46 LUXI E R E

culture at an early age. Because of that, Work knows the feelings of joy, and a little bit of awe, that he sees on the faces of onlookers get when he pulls up in his Chevelle. “I think part of it is because it has a universal appeal and takes you back to your childhood,” Work said. “These are the cars lots of us wanted in high school, and we still love them today.” Work sees his classic car menagerie, including that sexy Chevelle, as great investments because they don’t depreciate, like today’s exotic cars, which lose value the minute they are driven off the lot. Muscle cars will never depreciate. “So, to me, these cars are like my 401(k),” Work said. “But I get to look enjoy them every day instead of waiting for a statement to come in the mail.”

LOCAL BEAUTY

#whatsyourluxiere STORY BY KIANA MORIDI

T

his past year has brought a multitude of highs and lows. From navigating a pandemic to dealing with the stresses of everyday life, it can be difficult to set aside time for some more than necessary self-care. For some tips on how to put ourselves first during stressful times, we chat with local beauty practitioners about their luxieres and what makes them feel most like themselves when life starts to get in the way.

A GOOD NIGHT’S REST For us, becoming unapologetic about rest has been key to helping us refuel and reengage when things have gotten stressful this year. A good night’s sleep isn’t always reliable, so we try to focus on smaller more available ways, like taking breaks from the news cycle and social media or practicing simple breathwork and embodiment techniques. Getting in a warm bath with one of our salt soaks while a Signature Candle burns always helps to decompress and let go.

FACIALS, SKIN PEELS & MASKS When my skin is sallow, tired, or flaky, one of my favorite treatments to use is Natura Bisse Diamond Glyco Extreme Peel. It increases cellular turnover, helps other products work better and makes my skin feel soft and smooth. Another must-have for stress control is Trish McEvoy Instant Solutions Triangle of Light Eye Mask. I use these after sleepless nights, before events, or if my allergies are causing puffiness. Last but not least, I absolutely love Essential Shock Intense Complex serum. It’s vitamins for the skin and addresses hormonal breakouts. - Alecia Sullivan (Balliets Beauty Advisor and Esthetician)

GYM WORKOUTS

SILENT MORNING RUNS

PRACTICING YOGA

Early morning gym times at Union Performance absolutely save me. Successfully staying busy is also my luxiere. Although I am the owner and help my team run Skinlab, I am a mom and I have a fulltime job in healthcare administration. I am happiest when I am busy and motivated. Lastly, I love solving problems. Big, small, and sometimes weird dilemmas. I’m a glass half full person and thrive off of solutions. Not all problems can truly be solved, but improvement is often achieved, and betterment is always a good thing!

My luxiere is running in the morning. I love my morning runs because they give me time to myself in the silence of the early morning. If I had to pick a second option, I would pick a great pair of shoes. I love shoes, and a fantastic pair of heels makes me feel tall and powerful. I’ve had patients who say that they come to see me just to see what pair of shoes I’ll be wearing!

The smallest pleasures in my life have felt the most luxurious to me lately. The quiet of my morning yoga practice, getting dressed up for work even when my shop is closed and no one sees me, listening to music while cooking dinner, and of course, stopping to appreciate the beauty of nature—whether it’s taking a walk outside on a sunny day or sitting at my desk blending natural essences to make perfume. Luxuries are everywhere!

- Sarah Bleakley (Skinlab Injectables)

I set aside time to teach guitar lessons every Wednesday during my busy schedule. I have played since I was 17, and it always makes me feel lighter. I also meditate daily. Connecting to spirit and earth energy helps me release trapped energy in my aura and helps me focus. I also love to swim laps and kayak. My daughter Amber Cummins likes to take salt baths with incense and oils to release negative energy. She also regularly sages her house, takes walks, and loves to do breath work.

MASSAGE & MEDITATION To me, luxiere is about self-care with relaxation. If I can indulge myself in a spa, massage, whirlpool or steam with an amazing lunch, I feel like I’ve won the lottery. With meditation, it’s like resetting the button on life and I feel brand new—now that’s a luxiere! - Raylene Cravens (Lash by Lash)

- Dr. Anureet Bajaj (Bajaj Plastic Surgery)

- Stefanie Grant Cassel (Twinkle Apothecary)

TIME...TO SLOW DOWN My luxiere is time—slowing down to do the rituals that keep my mind and body in balance. Adding dry brushing before bathing, taking a deep inhale before my skincare or applying special body oil. It’s the little things that add up to be bigger elements of calm. - Chelsey Ann Cobbs (Salt & Water)

From soothing skincare routines to exercising and time spent in the great outdoors, we all have our own simple luxieres. Although it may look a bit different for each of us, practicing self-care can serve as a calming reset during stressful times. So, when life starts to get in the way, draw yourself a warm bath, put on your favorite face mask, and sip on some bubbly—because you deserve it.

an unlikely activist OK PRIDE

STORY BY CHRISTINE EDDINGTON

Sometimes a person’s heart can’t unfurl to its fully-formed, glorious, magnanimous size until it’s been well and truly shattered first. And sometimes what starts as heartbreak quickly becomes an awakening and the realization that you’ve just discovered your life’s purpose. That’s exactly what happened to Sara Cunningham when her son came out. She was shaken, shattered, panicked, beside herself, and certain that his revelation would doom him to hell for eternity. Literally. “It was a brutal awakening,” Cunningham says. “Our church was non-affirming. People I knew acted like something bad had happened to Parker. At first I thought I needed to do anything I could to save him. My mindset was that I was fighting to save his soul from eternal damnation, because that was the ideology of the church we went to at the time.” Parker was young, 21, when he came out to his mother, and Cunningham freely admits that she would have tried anything to ungay him back then, even the so-called conversion therapy now illegal in 20 states. “A better name for conversion therapy is shame-based ministry. It’s still legal in Oklahoma, and it’s dangerous. But I would have tried it for Parker. I couldn’t, though, because he was too young.” She sounds so deeply grateful, now, that that plan was thwarted, although at the time she felt it was a huge blow. But then she met some of Parker’s friends. And she started thinking. “It was pivotal. I realized that my straight son had more rights and legal protection than my gay son.” She realized she was accountable for what she did – or didn’t do – next. So she tried to bring her church around, bless her heart. “I tried to bridge the gap, to try to get them to the table,” she says of her now-former Baptist church. “The church wouldn’t budge.” Cunningham left that church but holds fast to her Christian faith. “I

ART IN THE NEW AGE WITH

ike its name, Objets Trouvés has a distinct elegance and sparks curiosity in everyone who has had the opportunity to look through the window or visit the space. Every art piece in the gallery, which has recently changed locations, has been personally and carefully chosen by the owner and director, Susan McCalmont. Objets Trouvés holds true to its meaning, “found objects,” offering an eclectic variety of both new and old art. Art has been a central part of McCalmont’s life. She comes from a family of artists where art in all its forms has been expressed and celebrated, so it’s no surprise that her passion has guided her professional career. Here, we chat with McCalmont about her vision behind Objets Trouvés, changes in the industry, and what art means to her. What was your motivation for starting Objets Trouvés? For a big part of my career, I was involved in a more theoretical aspect of the arts, by helping found Creative Oklahoma and through my involvement with The Kirkpatrick Foundation. For the next chapter in my career, I wanted to do something more tangible, where I could meet people again and be able to make that connection between artists and individuals who were curious about art. Tell us about the vision behind the gallery. The idea emerged to have proof of concept—a small space with a big vision. I didn’t want to seem like just another gallery. I wanted to be a place of new discoveries by mixing old and new art, a place to build an art community where artists could connect

and where buyers would get the opportunity to know more, learn and even meet the artists behind the piece they purchased. Tell us about Objets Trouvés new location. We reopened our previous location about two months ago, and we started with one day a week. We then went to three days a week for a few hours, and people started to rediscover us, but we could only have two people at a time at the space. About a month ago, I talked to one of the owners at Gordon Stuart, and they suggested we bring some of our paintings into the store. So, we brought seven paintings and the receptivity from their customers was so great. When the opportunity came, we practically tripled the space we had at our previous location. Now we are in what used to the Christian Dior boutique. People can now come to our gallery or come in through Gordon Stuart and enjoy both spaces. Times like these have forced us all to think creatively. Have you been able to implement something new? I saw the opportunity to have conversations between artists and collectors. We also had exhibition openings. We utilized Will Rogers Theatre across the street for more extensive galleries, food receptions, and artist talks, which worked very well until March. We quickly had to adapt and think creatively. We opened an exhibition called Figurations, which is about interpreting the human face and figure while pushing the limits of three-dimensional form. Still, we had to close down the day after. I knew all along that we had to

LUXI E R E 55

COMMUNITY

more of a digital presence than just the website, so we used a platform to create an online exhibition for Figurations. I still wanted to keep the camaraderie that we had managed to build between artists. So, every Friday we started having Zoom conversations for one hour. We started just with Objets Trouvés artists, but quickly it went way beyond that. People started inviting their friends, I started asking some of my international contacts, and very soon, we had over 40 people on the call. It went from artists talking to one another to artists presenting their work. At that time, I realized that we were creating a community of artists and a community of collectors. We now have artists from the [the country of] Georgia, France, The Netherlands, and Belgium, and we have inquiries from Iceland and other countries. It proves that human connectivity is stronger now than if we had been operating business as usual. What have you discovered throughout your search for antique art? My background is in art history, so it is always interesting to see how an art piece was created based on the time period. In every civilization, the artists, the poets, the

56 LUXI E R E

musicians, and the writers interpret where society was at a certain point in history, and it’s very interesting to go back in time and revisit. I found that in estate sales, a lot of people were discarding unique original art, not knowing what they had. Once I went to an estate sale, and I saw a painting that intrigued me. It was a landscape that had been identified as a Dutch painting, but I knew it was not because of the use of color. I thought it was a 19th century American landscaping, and it seemed to be a George Pearse Ennis, but I wasn’t sure. I bought the painting and took it to an expert to have it cleaned. He was able to find the signature and authenticated it as a real George Pearse Ennis painting. That was my Antique Roadshow moment. What does art mean to you? It’s wonderful to see the great work of Oklahoma Contemporary and the Oklahoma City Museum of Art and their immense contribution to arts and culture in Oklahoma City. Art is a reflection of the artist’s soul. You can have a blank sheet of paper, a mound of clay, a mound of marble, or whatever the medium might be, and that first line, that first mark, is a reflection of the artist’s soul. That is why I believe artists are some of the bravest

people because it’s hard to expose who you are and how you feel to the rest of the world. Art is about humanity. It’s about the creative spirit that resides in all of us. It just so happens that some people have an extraordinary gift to portray that creativity visually. What kind of art can we expect to see at Objets Trouvés? The gallery has works of a variety of formats, media, and styles, from classic art to modern and minimalist pieces with impeccable precision. We have art from all over the world. Art is truly an international language, and I hope that people can experience that when they visit the gallery. My intention is for people to enjoy art, and, if they are thinking about collecting art, for this to be a place where they can start learning and appreciating art; because of that, we have a variety of price points. For those who have experience collecting art, I hope that Objets Trouvés is a place for new discoveries, just like our name. You can visit Objets Trouvés’ new location at 6504 N Western Ave, Oklahoma City, OK 73116

visit to the corporate headquarters of Solas Real Estate mesmerizes and delights the senses and immediately begs the question: exactly where am I?

“If you have seen Alice in Wonderland, when you go through the

rabbit hole, you are in a different world,” Chad Khoury said. “But as soon as you step into that world, what was normal and expected is now completely removed, because you are no longer working inside the box you have set up for yourself. You are working in a limitless capacity and nothing is impossible. That was the goal in the design.” From the moment clients walk through the elevator doors, they are flooded with brightly colored murals, specially designed tiles and white walls. The new office boasts eleven rooms that can be used for individual work, meetings, and private calls. Along with an amazing view overlooking downtown Oklahoma City, amenities include a putting green on one of the office’s two spacious balconies, a soothing waterfall in the foyer and a meditation room with a floor covered with half a ton of sand. It’s all carefully curated to enhance relaxation and mental health for associates and clients. Walls are covered with paintings and murals from local artists like Chelsea Kilburn and Charlotte Strickland. Khoury could easily be describing an over-the-top

New York penthouse, the oligarch or scion of business, but the world he’s created is the brand-new offices of Solas Real Estate. Located on the 17th floor of City Place Tower in downtown Oklahoma City, the company is transforming the residential and commercial real estate industry. “Solas is the company that helps you have a joyful experience,” Khoury said. “Because we are a partner with you. Whether it is your first home… or whether you are an experienced investor. Solas can be as sophisticated as your appetite is. But we are also focused on keeping it simple and efficient.” Khoury and co-founder Kaci Kaiser launched Solas in 2019, but crafting an office space that spoke to their vision took the better part of another year. Of course, the pandemic slowed progress. The Solas founders, ever the perfectionists, also doubled as the general contractors and oversaw every inch of the design and construction. “[The new office] is going to let people know that our commitment to quality is different than a lot of the other things they are going to see out there, because we obviously have a great attention to detail,” Khoury said. “We spent a lot of time making sure our clients and associates have a good place to work and have a good environment. It’s just going to set the tone from the beginning of what type of company we are.”

Villa Teresa’s spacious flats and tri-level townhomes, tucked behind the towering oaks and overlooking the city center, redefine life in Midtown — a balanced sanctuary of solace and social. Villa’s contemporary architecture is a modern reflection of the historic neighborhood, an effort to preserve and protect the site’s story. The pitched silhouettes, the meticulous masonry, the metal accent work — each element of design calls back to the ground’s premier Catholic institutional namesake and the surrounding collection of beloved architecture.
