e are stronger together, even when we need to stay six feet apart. As I write this note, it occurs to me that in the short time it will take to print this issue of Luxiere, we may well be experiencing a new new normal. Safety is paramount. Whatever the guidelines are today, or tomorrow, please follow them. Even if it’s difficult, even if you find it somewhat boring in between the stressful bits, employ a little creativity and you’ll feel better. Realize that there may be a deeper emotional value resulting from what is happening. We are experiencing something collectively now - the isolation that many experience on a daily basis. It is their normal; we are now forced to have it be ours. Will we remember these feelings of empathy and connectedness when our normal returns, or will we purge our memories as quickly as possible? As we ponder these personal and societal implications, we know some things remain true. One of the best and quickest ways to feel connection is to come to the aid of another person. Buy a gift card now to use later from your hairdresser or favorite restaurant. Pick up some little luxiere’s or other necessities from a local business. Offer to pick items up for your neighbors when you venture out. Write a handful of notes to people you care about and pop them in the mailbox. Remember to celebrate beauty, creativity, ingenuity and the people who embody them. It’s what we do with every breath we take here at Luxiere.

rowing up in a hardware store might not sound glamorous to the average female, but to me it was a way of life; I didn’t know anything else. I looked at it as a creative playground where I could help someone repair a screen, fix a squeaky door, or find the perfect paint color for their bedroom. Little did I know, this childhood experience was teaching me the basics of design, problem solving, and building relationships with people. That humble beginning started my love affair with the kitchen and bath industry and shaped my career path to work for both Kohler Co. and currently Cambria®, where I work with designers and builders daily. Every year, like a kid waiting to open presents at Christmas, I can’t wait to go to the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show (KBIS). It’s my Super Bowl; I can’t help it. The chance

to see innovative products from the best manufacturers in our industry gives me goose bumps — and this year was spectacular! Wallto-wall, the show was packed with inspiration: bold, saturated color on cabinets; using mixed metal accents on countertops; integrating full stone backsplashes; showcasing the beauty of black on black design; incorporating nature into the kitchen; and, of course, streamlining technology into your home. Now the hard part. How to begin to share the endless inspiration, ideas and trends from the show with my designers and clients in Oklahoma? klahoma City has been leading the charge in the number of women-owned businesses for more than 15 years, since three brave women entrepreneurs each opened their own PR Agencies. Kym Koch, founder of Koch Communications, Brenda Jones Barwick, founder of Jones PR, and Debbie Anglin, founder of Anglin PR, began their businesses at a time when there were very few women entrepreneurs. I was excited to interview each of these entrepreneurial icons and learn more about what has made them successful and what lessons they have learned along the way that have helped them build thriving, sustainable businesses. As you read their stories, consider these statistics, and you will be even more amazed by their journeys and what has made each of them successful: • In 2019, U.S. women-owned businesses generated $1.8 trillion • 40% of all U.S. businesses are owned by women • There are 114% more women entrepreneurs than there were 20 years ago

Kati Hanna: As a child, what did you always want to be when you grew up? Kym Koch: As a kid, I wanted to be a scientist. I wanted to work in a lab, growing things in a Petri dish and watching cells divide. I am less than 2 semesters away from finishing my biology degree – maybe someday. Brenda Jones Barwick: I knew since I was 9 years old that I would live and work in Washington, DC. This was an early indication of my passion for being involved in shaping the nation, which begins in neighborhoods and in communities where a person is planted. I still have my 1967 gallery visitor passes to the U.S. Senate and U.S. House chambers. The childhood vision was then revealed through studying Journalism, which led me to Washington, DC, and ultimately a 35-year career in public relations. When I had the choice in 1994 to return to Washington, DC, I made the decision to stay in Oklahoma City for two reasons: MAPS had just passed and I wanted to contribute however I could to Oklahoma City’s renaissance, and I wanted to live President Ronald Reagan’s dedication of planting young conservatives in cities all across the country to impact communities and not become Washington, DC, careerists. Debbie Anglin: In 2nd grade, I opened a counseling center on the playground because two of my friends were fighting and not talking after a sleepover that wasn’t inclusive enough and because John, a boy in my class, had a crippling crush on a girl who wouldn’t give him the time of day. I can’t remember the advice I gave them, but I hope I didn’t cause irreparable damage. There are seeds of that early desire to be a psychologist in my chosen profession today. I have always wanted to help people in a significant and impactful way.

KH: What was the best piece of advice you were given when you were first starting out? KK: Never be afraid to hire people who are better than you. BJB: Fortunately, I was able to seek advice from the former U.S. Ambassador to Switzerland who was a very successful Denver businessman. His two bits of advice were there’s never a good time to start a business and you’ll never know if you’re an entrepreneur until you do it. On his first piece of advice, the point he was making is that there’s never a perfect time to start a business because one can always find a reason not to; basically, the world is not perfect so there’s never perfect timing. His second bit of advice was in response to articles and checklists frequently printed about what makes an entrepreneur: the only way to find out if you have self-determination, ambition, motivation and the will to take risks is to put yourself out there. DA: I was still early in my own business, and Jean Gumerson, the president of the Presbyterian Health Foundation, was chairing a project I was working on (Project KIDS, the predecessor to MAPS for Kids). We ran into a political/ideological impasse with some committee members that had started to get ugly. She hosted a small group in her home, served refreshments and in the kindest way, told everyone that she was confident that such a smart group could find a solution where others had failed. Discussion ensued and everyone came away feeling recommitted to working together. I commented later about her effectiveness and she said, “Oh, Debbie, I just put out the snacks.” KH: What is the biggest sacrifice you have made in starting or running your business? KK: In the years of crazy growth of Koch Communications, I gave up a lot of time with family and friends. Luckily, I have family who understood the demands on my time, and over the years, I have been fortunate to hire incredibly talented people to handle the workload, so I got back some of that time. But, it’s still a daily decision of managing priorities.

Q

uestions Lauren McGehee, lead nurse injector at Skinlab Injectables, hears almost daily: Which natural treatments will bring the most benefits? How can I look my best and most youthful without looking “done”? Not looking “done” is the Holy Grail, isn’t it? It’s all too easy to fall into the trap of overcorrecting when aging an issue. It’s understandable; sometimes we just panic. Luckily the brilliant founders and staff at Skinlab Injectables want to help us. “One key is to start preventative treatments when you’re a little younger,” McGehee says. Small maintenance treatments scheduled regularly will yield ongoing, subtle results which build over time. “Natural procedures tend to take a little longer before you see results than other types of treatment, but results are long-lasting, she says, Skinlab has a number of natural treatments.”

SKINPEN MICRONEEDLING AND PLATELET RICH PLASMA

This natural treatment harnesses the skin’s own ability to heal itself. Textural challenges like large pores, fine lines and crepiness respond well to microneedling and PRP. The treatment involves making hundreds of tiny, superficial punctures in the skin. By tiny, we mean from half a millimeter deep to two millimeters at most, and yes, you’re numb for this part. PLATELET RICH PLASMA (PRP) INSTEAD OF TRADITIONAL FILLER

Not everyone is a good candidate for traditional filler, especially under the eyes. Using your body’s own miracle serum, Platelet Rich Plasma, instead of filler is a fantastic natural option. Fun fact: nobody is allergic to their own PRP, so you never have to worry about a reaction. Injecting PRP into a trouble spot will, over the course of three to five treatments, thicken the skin and plump things up. Great for sinking under the eyes, on the neck or chest.

here is a lightness in the air, a little hope in the mood, and an anticipation that comes with blooming flowers, green grass and warm, sunny days (I think we all need a medal for making it through winter!). As we look at cleaning out the closets and simplifying the house, our routine shifts. We begin eating lighter foods, fresh produce, and smoothies packed with supplements to support our more active lifestyle. It’s a natural shift that truly brings the seasonal calendar in balance with daily living. There is something so lovely about a wash of color on the cheeks - that gentle glow from within of a creamy blush. Peach, fleshy pinks and light corals wash a healthy pop of color that brings life to the skin. Feeling tired? Pop of blush! Dull? Pop of blush! Washed out in photos? Pop of blush! No time for makeup? MARKING TREE DESIGN STORY BY MICHAEL KINNEY

I

n the middle of the offices of Marking Tree Design sits a large imposing river table. It’s made from the lumber of an old Black Walnut tree with green glass filling in the center space left by removing the soft inner wood. When you see it, you immediately feel the history that comes with it. Zachary True Hammack, who runs Marking Tree Design, says that the table is one of his favorite pieces, not only because of how it looks, but also because of the story of where the wood came from. “River tables are hugely popular all over the world,” said Hammack. “Our use of the handmade fused glass for the river makes it one of the few pieces, in all my years of creating various forms of art, that I believe is a completely original creation. It’s made of Black Walnut, which is our favorite indigenous species

of North America.” Hammack created Marking Tree Design three years ago with a goal of making sure each object he worked on and sold had a story to share was just as important as making the piece distinct and unique. At Marking Tree Design (1615 N. Portland Ave, Oklahoma City), Hammack creates stunning handmade furniture and art for residential or commercial use, pieces that can anchor an entire room or add flair to others. “We aim to produce modern, bold, functional art in the form of furniture,” Hammack said. “We create our own Elemental Contemporary line using rare, beautiful woods, resin, glass, and steel. Our design team will also work with you to customize or sell you the raw material to make your own imaginings come to life.” >

Yet, this was not the path Hammack saw himself on as an art student at the University of Oregon. At that time his main artistic outlets were painting and graphic design. But after he graduated from Oregon and returned back to his home state of Oklahoma, he rejoined his father, Garland True Hammack Jr., at Arrowhead Lumber - the same business he worked at as a kid for $9 an hour. “I moved back here and worked in the lumberyard again for a little while,” Hammack said. “He moved me up to sales a couple of years later, which was interesting. The whole time I was just like, ‘can I do something creative?’” Growing stifled in his role as a salesman, Hammack and his father decided to find a better outlet for his artistic nature and creativity. “I was an art major. I have been painting, doing graphic design. Building is something I’ve always had and materials have always been around me,” Hammack said. “So my dad and I just kind of said let’s do something else, and let’s do something that is more fun. Something that doesn’t have as much stress as the wholesale lumber business.” That was the genesis of Marking Tree Design, which takes its name from a form of Native American technology that marked where water was located along the Trail of Tears. Taking the elder Hammack’s resources and knowledge of all things lumber and allowing the younger Hammack to pour his talent into, it they created something special. “Everything just seemed to fit. I am an artist, he was in the lumber business,” Hammock said. “This is a great marriage of that. Everything started to kind of line up.” The new business also allowed the father and son to bond. “As we moved into this, it started to become a lot more of a rewarding thing for us. We got to work together in a less stressful environment,” Hammack said. “I got to be where I excel. I don’t excel in the lumber type of thing. I excel in being able to create and figure out ways to push the envelope with art. That’s what I’ve been thankful to have.” It takes four to six weeks to complete most projects at Marking Tree Design. According to Hammack, they have been able to keep a full schedule mostly by word of mouth. “People come in and ask, ‘What can you do?’ There’s nothing that we can’t do or can’t get done,” Hammack said. “We feel pretty confident that we have a little niche that we’re going to stay in. We don’t seem like we’re going to go anywhere.”

W

ith a deep fascination of complex systems, fractured lines, and creative narrative, Ardith Goodwin creates quite imaginative figurative abstractions and nonrepresentational abstracts in acrylic and mixed media. When you view her work, you get a sense of dynamic movement which is integral to her connection with the physics behind how the human form moves and the external forces that impact it unique ways. Creative narrative is the layer she feels most at home with by telling the story of the character through the unexpected details or pockets of interest that she builds within her abstractions. Ardith is passionate about combining all of the above in a way that conveys the beautiful diversity in the human race along with the energy that is palpable at times during challenging moments and gatherings. Her hope is that through the layers of visual interest combined with her fascination and use of color, there will be a resonate connection with the viewer which makes them question and ponder a bit of wonder and juxtaposition in life. G

rowing up in Texas, Amber Venz Box was a huge fan of the TV show “Gossip Girl.” She was one of the thousands of fans who tuned in weekly during the show’s run in the 2000s to check out the teen drama set in New York. But Venz Box said it was another character on the show that kept stealing her attention. “On the wall in the home of Serena Vanderwood, one of the characters, was a sign that said Proud of Marfa. And it was in every episode,” Venz Box said. “And I remember looking up “What’s Proud of Marfa?” and finding out that it was this super artsy town in far west Texas. And the more I knew about it, the more I noticed people talking about it and it being relevant culturally.” Venz Box didn’t know it then, but that seemingly insignificant sign would become the inspiration behind The Local Chapter, a private retreat in western Texas that she and her fellow entrepreneur husband, Baxter, created for the design-minded adventurer. “I had always wanted to go to this art town, and in 2013 we finally went,” said Venz Box, who co-created RewardStyle. com with her husband. “And so the deal was, we’d go to Marfa, but we couldn’t leave until we found a way to monetize Instagram. And, we actually did. We created what, today, is the LikeToKnowIt shopping app. We created that when we were out there, and we just kept going back to the area. By 2016, we decided that we’d really love to have a place out there.” Three years later, the Boxes opened the doors to The Local Chapter. It’s situated on 392 acres of private land near the western boundary of Big Bend National Park. The essential concept was to create a space for visitors to not only get away from the rat race of big city life, but to be able to open their minds and let the atmosphere and scenery inspire them. >

“It’s wide open, it’s clean and it’s all super comfortable and plush,” Venz Box said. “There’s truly nothing more than exactly what you need, but everything that you need is there for you. So, you can really lie in bed and just have your mind be so clear, and there’s that kind of freedom to whether you want to look through the dome and just stare at the sky or the stars at night or the 360-degree view. There are windows totally around the circumference, and so you can see out to all sides.” One of the aspects of The Local Chapter that makes it stand out from other country retreats is the use of yurts, which is a portable round tent that was used by nomadic tribes in central Asia. However, the three yurts located at The Local Chapter property are a few steps beyond what the original concept began as. “Our thought was that it would be something that was very low footprint, and we really wanted to just get something out there, I would say, quickly,” Venz Box said. “We, perhaps, misunderstood the simplicity of a yurt. The way that we built these yurts is truly like homes, with nice designer flooring and full bathrooms with showers. They’re pier and beam, they’ve been fully painted inside, so they’re all white. It’s not your typical yurt inside, but we took a lot of care to make them just like a home.” Each yurt has electricity, running water and all the conveniences you would expect from first-class lodging. The yurts are spaced out across a high mesa, which offers the feel of seclusion and privacy that many are looking to dive into. “From the yurt, you can actually see the Texas-Mexico border at the St. Elena Canyon,” Venz Box said. “And so people don’t realize that there are two national parks that meet at the international border, and they’re both absolutely gorgeous. You can actually see that border from staying at our yurts.” Reservations for The Local Chapter can be made at the Localchapter.com. While it can also be found on home-sharing sites like Airbnb, Venz Box said what the Local Chapter offers is unlike anything that prospective guests will find elsewhere. “It is one of the only places that I’ve ever been where you truly unwind. What I mean by that is, there is not someone serving you cocktails while you sit at the beach,” Venz Box said. “It’s not that kind of unwind. It’s a place where it is a forced unplug because the views are so incredibly beautiful and they’re totally private views. So you have what feels like your own private view of the entire national park and you can truly achieve tranquility.”

at Fitzgerald is big on high-fives, endorphins, and personal transformation. He’s also really tall, with a shock of white hair, a solid handshake and a warm personality. A graduate of Mount Saint Mary’s High School and SWOSU (where he and his wife, Barbara, met), he’s had an enviable career: Vice President and General Manager at iTunes, an executive at Disney for 8 years, 10 years with Campbell’s, and a stint as a (legitimate) banker in the Caribbean. Upon his return to Oklahoma, he advised the George Kaiser Foundation on various projects and served as Special Advisor for Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Entertainment as a cabinet member to Gov. Mary Fallin. His latest career move may seem incongruous at first, but CycleBar is actually a perfect fit for Fitzgerald, whose new personal mission is to make it perfect for you, too. He, Barbara and their children Morgan, Ryan, and daughter-in-law Amanda own the CycleBar studios in Norman and Chisolm Creek. “Our

kids went to the University of Oklahoma, and we thought after college they’d move back to California, but they didn’t. They stayed here, so we came back to Oklahoma, and we all started looking for something we could do together to leave a positive legacy.” The family knew their business couldn’t just be about profit, it had to be about giving, too. “When we were looking for our business, we had three criteria it had to meet. It had to be good for people, build community and give back. Those were our non-negotiables,” Fitzgerald says. Other non-negotiables? “We want our clients to have what we call a four-wall experience. The moment they walk in they’re greeted, usually by name, and offered assistance every step of the way. They don’t have to bring a thing. We’ve got cycling shoes, water, towels, a locker with their name on it, bananas, coffee and granola bars for after class, toiletries so they can freshen up, and then there’s the class itself. It’s a party on a bike.” >

A Tapas Pilgrimage Unloading the Fiat onto our backs, we sandwich-park for a few days and unwittingly set out on the hike before us to meet Ana, our Airbnb host. It’s forty flights to our perch through medieval corridors on centuries-worn paths of stone, an ascent well worth the emergency visit to the hammam tomorrow. We arrive just in time to open the shutters to sunset and gasp at the city view. Hungry for an authentic taste of Spain, we drop our backpacks and let gravity and intuition lead to what would become a nightly descent: for culture, for dancing, but first, for tapas. You have to pass up the squares and turn down the side streets if you want to avoid being a victim of local food fraud. Eventually, we stumble upon Bodegas Castaneda, “a household name for Granadinos of all generations, a famous old bar, for its jamóns and chaotic atmosphere.”1 Unsure yet whether this is chaos or charm, we discover the narrative and elbow our way to a footprint at the bar. True tapas culture means you are standing and the house chooses your plate. It’s free with a glass of wine. The scene, one of wizardry by the beerslinging benefactors, is older than its patrons. Here, being polite is like forgoing your birthright. You yell forward, they yell backward, and small plates are dealt down the bar like hands at a poker table. Accompanying the four-ish rounds of Estrella Damm are crusty bread drizzled with oil, alternating stacks of blue and manchego cheese, roasted green chiles, gambas rojas and Jamón Ibérico sliced from the dozen or so curing just over our heads. The thrill of this rabblement is that you’re both required and welcomed to join the Spaniard way: There is no fun in perfection. Dancing in the Streets Taking cues from Granada travel writers1, we wander toward Sacromonte, vertically up hand-patterned rock streets too narrow for a car. We’re giddy knowing the destination is white caves where gypsies still dance in the streets and any path angled up will get you there. Being suckers for local legends, seeking out La Fragua and its Cervezas Alhambra-swigging owner, hippie hang-abouts and the cheapest glass of wine in town1, was the end of the day’s rainbow. After being introduced to

the green-bottled Southern Spain standard of beers, we overheard the no-BS bartender smoothly articulate Spanish culinary swagger. Pointing to a wine label she said, “Don’t worry about the name, just worry about where it’s from.” To find flamenco, one must simply listen and follow the sound. Into the orange glow of an open door off the street, we hear staccato claps and snaps and peek our heads in. A young teacher and her younger students are only practicing but tell us of their favorite place to watch the masters.

The Alhambra “One of the most enchanted, inscrutable, maddeningly beautiful structures ever created by man.” -Anthony Bourdain While the current chapter of Granada is a beautiful picture of coexistence, the past is layered with conquest and succession. The Alhambra is a walk through Granada's history book. Despite being Europe’s most visited tourist attraction, it remains an authentic inscription of Andalusia’s past. Just to reach the gates, you walk a mile through elms, brought by the English, that form a towering cape around the Arabian roses, myrtles and orange trees. The Romans originally broke ground here, but the Moorish architecture we see today began in the 13th century by Islamic caliphates. Spanish kings launched the Reconquista in 1492 and reclaimed the fortress, instituting a new purpose of contemplation through carvings in wood and stone, channeling water through the courtyards and reflecting on how light and shadow coexist in nature. Much like the flavors of Mexican cuisine, which were introduced through their occupiers over centuries, the art here, entirely built into the architecture, records its caretakers' musings.

With soul-stirring design and a dominant presence, the new Karma Revero GT is the most elegant luxury electric vehicle ever made.

ive years ago, Karma, a high-tech mobility incubator, seemingly sprung up out of the deserts of Southern California looking to change the way people look at electric cars. They didn’t buy into the notion that consumers had to choose between being environmentally conscious or feeling luxurious. After just a few years, the engineers at Karma may have proven themselves correct in the form of the 2020 Karma Revero GT. The four-door sedan was recently named the Green Car Journal’s 2020 Luxury Green Car of the Year at the Washington Auto Show in Washington D.C.

“Karma will always be known for creating soul-stirring luxury electric vehicles that combine technology, environmental performance and world-class craftsmanship,” said Karma CEO Dr. Lance Zhou. “The Karma family is grateful that Green Car Journal recognizes Karma’s continued efforts to offering a luxury EV that provides the best of both worlds – extended EV capability without any range anxiety.” Its competition for the award came from companies that have a long and storied history in the automobile business. While each of the cars are amazing in their own right, it was the Revero GT that stood out to the judges in its ability to combine luxury and sporting characteristics into one environmentally friendly automobile. “The Karma Revero GT epitomizes what a luxury car should be in a modern age,” said Ron Cogan, editor and publisher of Green Car Journal and GreenCarJournal.com. “The Revero GT features a compelling design with performance characteristics to match. Importantly, this extended-range electric sedan’s ability to drive up to 80 zero-emission miles on battery power alone and 360 miles overall suits all driving needs.” The fact that it only took half a decade for Karma to take home such a prestigious award may have caught the auto industry off guard. But not those inside the company. According to Karma Vice President, J. Joost De Vries, this type of take over was always part of the plan. “This is our second-generation product, so I think we’re a little bit beyond startup now,” De Vries said. “But if you look at what’s happening in the luxury market, there are so many startups today. You have to start in the luxury fields, because that is where people can afford your products. Our volumes are low. Luxury is about the exclusivity. So if you want to do something as a new company, your costs will be high. So you need to be in the luxury field and be able to survive in the luxury field.” The 2020 Revero product line is offered in two styles: The Revero GT, Karma’s definitive luxury electric vehicle currently available through Karma’s North American retail network, and Revero GTS. With a leather interior, the handmade ride has a base MSRP of $135,000 and comes in 13 varying colors. The luxury sport sedan features an all-new series hybrid drivetrain delivering a greater 80-mile battery electric range, and 360 mile range overall with electricity from its BMW-sourced enginegenerator. But, according to De Vries, just because the Revero GT is a green car, doesn’t mean it can’t turn heads as well. “We sell design. Luxury is all about stories. It’s about design. It’s about exclusivity. It is about having something to offer in a market that other people don’t have,” De Vries said. “So for us, design was everything. The stands, the proportions of this car, the wheel-base, enormous wheels. It is all speaks towards that design thing. Everything else will follow.”
