A NOTE FROM THE PUBLISHER

NEXT CHAPTER A

“It’s never too late to become who you want to be. I hope you live a life that you’re proud of, and if you find that you’re not, I hope you have the strength to start over.” F. SCOTT FITZGERALD

6 LUXI E R E

new year brings us new goals. A new decade brings us new aspirations. While the change from year to year may only be marked by calendars and tax forms, we still find a fresh sense of hope as we orient ourselves towards the New Year’s new journey. We give ourselves resolutions, small achievements to work towards: Ten pounds here. Eight hours sleep there. More journals filled. More books read. These small goals feel attainable at first, but are slowly pushed to the back burner. Our unachieved resolutions chatter from the backs of our minds until we can no longer hear them. These small failures are either met with guilt or indifference as we roll into spring and our day-to-day goes back to distracted days and late nights. But this year could be different, couldn’t it? Take a moment to think beyond what is easily attainable. Take a moment to think of the big picture; you are welcoming not just a new year, but a new decade. What do you want to be? What do you want to embody? Calmness? Contentment? Unity? Bravery? What do you want to see around you? What do you want to see for your children? Your grandchildren? Our actions as we work towards these ideals do not have to be grandiose. An action can be as simple as looking others in the eye with a smile as you pass on the street. It can be forgiving a past transgression. It can be forgiving yourself. Rather than work towards small goals with set markers that end with guilt, work towards large goals that can be measured for years to come. Wouldn’t you rather assess how often you said what you meant? How often you expressed gratitude? How often you showed empathy? How gracefully you accepted change in your life? In this issue, we take a look at those who embraced their life path’s evolution. We visited with Aubrey Ballard, a fashion aficionado turned vintage jewelry seller. We took a tour through Italy guided by our newest travel writer, Drenda Roberts. We combined runway with streetwear

in our feature fashion shoot. We learned Twinkle Apothecary’s Stefanie Grant Cassel’s story of how making her own deodorant led to a full-blown business. We’re a champion of change at Luxiere. We’re looking ahead with hope and we’re hoping you do the same. Even if the change from year to year may only be marked by calendars and tax forms, take this opportunity to embody the beginning of a braver, kinder and happier life. Take chances. Take a moment to look at how far you’ve come and where you’re heading. The new decade has begun and so has your next chapter. My best,

A TEXTURAL EXPERIENCE FOR 2020

DESIGN SPEAKS W I T H T R AV I S M O R E LO C K , CO - O W N E R WILSHIRE CABINET + CO

hose of you who know me best know that I am a total and complete cabinet nerd. I realize that most people don’t find cabinets as EXCITING, FASCINATING OR FABULOUS as I do…but, hey, we all have our hang ups, right?! Just a few years ago my husband and I opened a whole new Oklahoma company with my guilty pleasure in mind: Wilshire Cabinet + Co was born! From kitchens and baths to great rooms and laundries – and even the great outdoors – when you need fine cabinetry there is always something unique and custom that our amazing team can create for your new home or remodel. As I see it, there is nothing wrong with a clean, crisp, white, Shaker kitchen. But if that’s not for you, then there are bold colors, statement hardware, integrated lighting, and, most recently new, unexpected finishes and textures for your cabinet doors and drawers. I have followed the growing momentum in Europe and now in the US; non-traditional, textural elements are being used to make a design statement. This is no trend. Now that we have harnessed this technology, I believe texture is here to stay!

And so, I am thrilled to share some very exciting news from the cabinetry world with you. Our partners at Plato Woodwork, Inc. have long been revered as one of the top finefinished custom cabinets in the United States, and 125 years of excellence and innovation has brought them to their newest launch: THE COLLECTION. Showcasing textures in simple geometry, with innovative forms and function, the surfaces will captivate your senses. Focusing on unique textures for every door and drawer, this collection is the boldest step that the domestic cabinetry industry has ever made. It debuts with eight texture families: Crete, Crinkle, Hide, Ripple, Shine, Surf, Talc and Timber in a total of 28 finishes.

Modern

This elegant master bathroom showcases The Collection’s textures, balancing the room’s expansive windows and light-toned sleek, hard surfaces. The modern yet timeless cabinetry uses Split Walnut from the Timber family to lend rich, warm tones and rustic depth to the space. The panels framing the cabinets are in soft Black from the Talc family, which not only provides drama, but is uniquely well-suited to a bathroom setting with its low maintenance and extreme durability.

Perfection TIMBER: With an unprecedented physical depth of surface, Timber gives reference to wood’s rugged origins while providing an unexpected richness and sophistication.

This contemporary kitchen mixes four textures from THE COLLECTION to create a serene, inviting, and modern space. The wooded lot was incorporated into the space via the large picture windows, allowing natural light to flood the room. The neutral color palette of warm grays, white, and walnut complement the textures themselves and create a space that is bold yet familiar. The perimeter was designed in matte Gray from the Talc family, a smart soft-touch material with anti-fingerprint and scratch-resistant properties. The subtle leather texture of Hide, in combination with the raised walnut countertop and waterfall edge, makes the island a stunning workspace, perfect for entertaining. The walnut bar cabinetry was done in the heavily textured Surf material which acts as a feature piece and adds a pop of character.

HIDE: Elevate your design with the subtle texture of Hide. Sophisticated with a hint of masculinity, it’s an instant classic. TALC: Not to be underestimated, the velvety soft touch of Talc is as functional as it is beautiful. SURF: Like the rippling surface of the ocean, the depth and flow of Surf will add visual and physical interest to any space. It is a statement surface with organic roots. Wilshire Cabinet + Co is proud to be the exclusive Plato Woodwork Inc dealer in Oklahoma. THE COLLECTION kitchen by Plato, that debuted at the 2019 Architectural Digest Show in NYC, will be on permanent display at the Wilshire Cabinet + Co Gallery in January. As I always say, “friends don’t let friends drink and design,” so finish off that eggnog, pop that bottle of champagne, and let’s meet at the gallery in the New Year to celebrate this spectacular collection! CHEERS! Travis Morelock Co-Owner, Wilshire Cabinet + Co

hen Lauren Warkentine decided to leave the pharmacy software industry and begin working toward becoming a tailor of men's and women's suits, she didn’t know part of her job description would be a psychologist. At least that is what it has felt like during the past five years for the founder and CEO of William & Lauren as she has tried to spread the word throughout Oklahoma City that custom suits are for everybody. “We provide custom clothing. But it’s really more about the confidence that comes with it and the accessibility of custom," Warkentine said. "We’re trying to change the mindset. I think when people hear custom, they think ‘that’s not for me.’ That it’s unattainable. So we are really trying to change the mindset that custom should be for more people. It shouldn’t be unattainable.” Warkentine created William &

22 LUXI E R E

Lauren in 2015 after discovering just how much a good suit can improve a person’s level of confidence. “I was working in pharmacy software. I was in a very male-dominated industry. I was one of the only females, and I was very young. I didn’t fit in the mold of the world I was working in,” Warkentine said. “But I noticed a difference when I wore the clothes I looked good in. The person I brought to the table was better. When I didn’t have clothes I felt confident in, I was not as confident in a meeting. Or I was a little more distracted. Especially with suits for women, I would feel like I was in a costume. I was a little more hesitant to speak up. I just wasn’t bringing my best self to the table.” What surprised Warkentine even more was that her male co-workers had the same feelings of doubt and lack of confidence. That's when the wheels started turning for her. For four years, Warkentine

worked part-time building up William & Lauren (WilliamandLauren.com). Then in April 2019, she made it her full-time occupation. For now, William & Lauren’s base office is set up at The Treasury working space in downtown Oklahoma City. Customers can meet with Warkentine there to talk over what type of suits or separates they are looking to buy. But that is when Warkentine sometimes has to turn from tailor to psychologist for clients who may have never owned a suit or may be hesitant to express their true selves. “Basically they style the suit with my help,” Warkentine said. “I say my help, but for some guys I pick most everything. For the most part, I really try to pull out of them ‘what do you like?’ Because some guys will come in here really timid, saying 'I don’t wear suits often,' and they’re kind of nervous. I try to pull it out of them so by the end of the appointment,

they are telling me what they want. It’s fun to see that progression.” Warkentine says it normally takes three to four weeks for the suits to get back after measurements are taken. Currently, William & Lauren only provide suits and separates for men, but Warkentine is planning to begin service for women in 2020. "In five years I see us providing suits for men and women across the nation. But more than that, to me, the brand is about changing the narrative for people to help them become confident in themselves,” Warkentine said. “Confidence is the core, but it also comes down to people willing to take risks. People willing to have tough conversations. Just having the confidence to be seen. Ultimately, if we’re successful, that’s what we’re doing. Bringing personality back into clothes and empowering people.”

ne does not often expect deodorant to change the course of one’s life. In Stefanie Grant Cassel’s case, it was the propellant that sparked an idea that resulted in a full-blown business. A few years ago, Cassel became a single mother. Her Los Angeles fashion production job was stretching her thin and her wallet thinner. At the same time, she was settling into veganism, phasing out all products that were made with or touched by animals. Cassel found that the store-bought vegan deodorant was not only ineffective, but made her feel worse. She said, “I thought to myself, you know what, if these brands can make products and make that their business, so can I.” And so she did. “I didn’t start making deodorant with the intention of starting a business, but once I started making it, I realized it was something I could really do,” Cassel said. Once she started making bigger batches and testing out different formulas, she got an itch to experiment with other products. Within a short while, she realized she could do something bigger with the products she had come up with. >

This is a handcrafted vegan and cruelty free brand made thoughtfully, with ingredients and practices that are good for people, the earth, and all of our animal friends.

Cassel called her parents and told them she wanted to move home to Oklahoma and start a business. Within weeks she was home, and Twinkle Apothecary was born. It wasn’t all a breeze, Cassel said. Getting every batch consistent was a hurdle in the beginning stages. “After I went home and really started making a formula, I went through about a dozen batches and I thought ‘Oh my God, I have made a huge mistake.’ But I kept trying, and probably about fourteen batches in I felt I could work with it.” Through trial and error, Cassel found unexpected success alongside hardship. “I found old folk recipes for making a paste with tapioca starch for acne. I thought, okay, I have all these ingredients on hand, maybe I’ll try putting them on my face,” Cassel said. “The first time I used it, it felt amazing and I haven’t used anything else since. It’s now one of my top sellers.” Twinkle’s growth has been steady. The vegan skincare and beauty products have been met with enthusiasm from Oklahoma locals and online shoppers alike. In the first year, products were only sold on Etsy and at the Oklahoma City farmer’s market. “I was really surprised by how many local people not only liked what I was doing but were really hungry for it and excited about it,” Cassel said. As the excitement grew, so did the business. Twinkle’s first retail space was a few shelves in the back of Automobile Alley’s Siempre Viva boutique. Just this past year, Twinkle Apothecary outgrew the shelves and moved to a new home in Oklahoma City’s Midtown district. “It just keeps growing. I’m really amazed by it, because while 60 percent of my sales come from my website, I think it’s remarkable that 40 percent comes from this tiny little shop in Oklahoma City,” Cassel said. Twinkle’s stock now includes perfumes, hair care products, natural makeup, serums, and of course, the signature deodorant. Every Twinkle product is still handmade by Cassel. “I’m proud of what I’ve done so far and I just want to keep growing from where I’m at. I want to keep doing what I’m doing, but do it better.”

You can visit Twinkle Apothecary in person at 220 NW 13th St Suite 5, Oklahoma City, OK 73103, or shop online at www.twinkleapothecary.com.

FINE DINING

“AT THE END OF THEIR DAY, CUSTOMERS WANT TO GET OFF WORK AND COME, RELAX AND ENJOY THEMSELVES WHILE EATING GOOD FOOD.” —CLAY FALKNER, SIGNATURE GRILL

O

ne look at the menu for the Signature Grill, and it’s easy to see why it’s one of the top fine dining restaurants in Edmond. With succulent dishes such as the bacon and mushroom risotto, the jumbo blue lump crab cake, the pan-seared Chilean Sea Bass and the Black Angus ribeye, the establishment has gained a cultlike following. However, co-owner and head chef Clay Falkner says that while his flavor-packed meals are crowd pleasers, they are not the only aspect that makes the Signature Grill special. It’s all the hard work that goes into it. “The Signature Grill is me and Jess. It’s us,” Falkner said of himself and his wife, Jessica. “It’s what we do. It’s what’s back there working in the kitchen. I’m here all the time. I’m not cruising on vacations five times a year, you know what I mean? I’m here working. So that’s what Signature Grill is. You’re going to get me every time you come here.” After 15 years of working at other people’s restaurants, Falkner opened the Signature Grill (1317 E. Danforth Road) in 2008. It’s a small, intimate bistro that isn’t beholden to one style of food. In fact, Falkner calls it freestyle. “There are a lot of layers and flavors with the stuff that we do,” Falkner said. Falkner was born and raised in Bethany. He said even as a child he was partial to being around the food atmosphere, but it was when he was 13 years old that he made the decision that being a culinary chef was the path he was destined to take. And it was all due to his mother. “I just loved cooking with her,” Falkner said. “I loved cooking when I was a kid, I loved cooking with my mom and it was just, ‘I like this. I like what we’re doing.’” The dish that floods him with the most intense

memories from his childhood is his mother’s potato bread. While it’s something he has not incorporated into his current menu, the memories of it have not lost their hold on him. “It is different. I had it when I was a kid,” Falkner said. “Just the process of the dough rising and the flavor and everything like that - it was just homemade food. To me, it’s still a craft. Everybody does it. Some people do it better than others.” Being able to create those types of memories with food is something Falkner has been doing at the Signature Grill. He takes each dish on personally and strives for his meal to be a highlight of each diner’s day. “It’s pleasing people. You don’t really know who you’re cooking for and that’s what I tell my guys,” Falkner said. “You don’t know who you’re cooking for. You don’t know what they’re dealing with. You don’t know if they’re going through a loss or something. So you just got to ‘Do what you can do’ for everybody.” Falkner said he knew going in that it would take be long hours, hard work and stressful situations to make the Signature Grill a success. “I work all the time. It’s because that’s the way the restaurant business is,” Falkner said. “You get deliveries, you get orders, you’ve got to prep stuff and you get sidetracked doing other stuff and this and that. But that’s the restaurant business.” While much of the business can be taxing, the actual cooking and making his Signature Grill (signaturegrilledmond.com) customers happy are what gets Falkner up every morning and back at work by 9 a.m. “Customers know what kind of work I put in and they work hard too, so at the end of their day they want to get off and come and eat and relax and enjoy themselves and eat good food,” Falkner said. “That’s what I do for them. That’s what I do for everybody.”

ELEGANT AND EDGY

PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOSH WELCH

Spring fashion week is less than a month away, but with the weather inching toward colder temperatures, we are reminded that winter is still here and the trends that have encompassed the fall/winter season are both welcomed and wearable. Menswear has packed a huge punch this season with an emphasis on oversized and double-breasted jackets paired with pleated, high-waisted pants. Kudos to Monse for interpreting this trend so beautifully with a deconstructed blazer dress. Knitwear has softened the menswear trend a bit with everything from thick, cropped sweaters to allover knitted looks. And color has reigned supreme in everything from clothing to accessories. Looking to buy one new boot for winter? Look no further than the combat boot. It is everywhere this season and has been shown with everything from dresses to denim. Leather, real or faux, looks fresh this season and is shown so perfectly as a dress by Hunter Bell.

he opens the front door with a gentle smile and the kind of warmth that instantly makes you feel like this isn’t the first time you’ve met her. Aubrey Ballard, owner and creator of the online jewelry shop The Dandy Stone, is dressed in a multicolored striped top, lathered with layers of gold necklaces and vibrant gems, and paired with a tie-dye print workout legging. Her fingers are frosted with jewels and antique rings a testament to the eclectic yet dainty style of her shop’s handpicked jewels. “To me, style is an art form,” she says, “Styling a look, whether with clothing or accessories, is no different to me than painting, singing or dancing - it takes a trained but instinctual eye, and the possibilities are endless.”

The Dandy Stone, which is an extension of her brand and fashion blog, The Dandy Liar, has been in the making for more than 25 years. “My mom used to drag me to gem and jewelry shows when I was little,” she says, “But I was quickly bit by the jewelry bug, and I’ve been collecting accessories ever since I can remember.” From freshwater pearl necklaces to true gold huggie hoops, styles range anywhere from Victorian era to modernday estate finds. “One of my favorite pieces I have is a Victorian glass mourning locket from the late 1890s,” says Ballard, “Victorians were serious about memorializing their loved ones, and a locket like this was intended to hold a lock of hair, or perhaps even a tooth, from a deceased family member or friend. Now, it would make the perfect way to store a photo or pressed flower, or even to be worn empty, as-is.”

s history continues to live through the accessories, Ballard looks to offer something vividly unique for each of her clients. “My customer knows when she sees a good piece of jewelry,” she says, “She enjoys collecting meaningful pieces that she can wear for years to come. She loves to layer, pays attention to details, and enjoys mixing metals, colors and patterns. But most of all, she knows what she wants and she’s confident in her own skin.” As Ballard builds her gem-hunting clientele, she hopes to seek out more repeat customers for the upcoming year. “I’ve been fortunate enough to have so many repeat customers - I’m very grateful for that,” she says, “Expanding beyond my customer base is definitely a goal of mine heading into 2020.” For shop inquiry, visit The Dandy Stone’s Instagram @thedandystone. I T A LY Italy is always at the top of anyone’s bucket list for so many reasons. Italy embodies the sweet life; you can feed your passion for authentic regional cuisine and feast your eyes on Roman ruins and art by masters like Michelangelo and Leonardo Da Vinci. From the cobblestoned streets of Florence to the panoramic views of Tuscany, the unrivaled Amalfi Coast to the dramatic Dolomites, the Venetian canals to the stunning beauty of Lake Como and Lake Garda – Italy is pure magic.

GREECE You'll love the sun-drenched islands, the whitewashed towns, and the mythic past that goes back forever. Enjoy the whitewashed dwellings of Mykonos, the historic ruins in Athens, the sun-soaked cafes on Crete, the famous views on Santorini, and the UNESCO-designated Old Town of Corfu. Greece has it all -- history, culture, beaches, and food and wine.

FRANCE With more than 600 Michelin-starred restaurants and nearly two million acres of vineyards, France is a mecca for food and wine lovers. If you can tear yourself away from the table, you can tour the wineries of Bordeaux by bicycle, float over the fields of Champagne in a hot-air balloon, cruise the Riviera in a yacht, or view the luxurious chateaux of the Loire Valley from a riverboat. And of course, a stop in Paris, the City of Light, is a must.

J A PA N Stroll beneath blossoming cherry trees in the spring, or slalom down the Japan Alps in the winter. Dance ‘til dawn in Tokyo’s rollicking clubs or bask in a hot-spring spa. Immerse yourself in history at Kyoto’s 17th century Katsura Imperial Villa and gardens or tour the Jishu Shrine, dedicated to the god of love. For an unforgettable experience July through August, scale Mount Fuji by night and see the sunrise from Japan’s tallest peak. Japan is also hot this year, as the 2020 Olympics are taking place July 24 August 9 in Tokyo.

C R O AT I A Since joining the EU and appearing in scenes from “Game of Thrones,” Croatia has been basking in the spotlight. Walk along Dubrovnik’s city walls overlooking the sapphire blue Adriatic. In seaside Split, wander the ancient Roman streets of Diocletian’s Palace, dating to 300 AD. Head to the Istrian Peninsula for more beaches, fishing villages, vineyards and olive groves, or head inland to Zagreb, a cultural capital with more than two dozen museums.

should banish any disappointment. Follow the Malt Whisky Trail to sample some of the world’s finest Scotch and bring your clubs for a round at one of Scotland’s renowned golf courses, such as St. Andrews. Hike through the Highlands, or head to the Hebrides or Orkneys for a quiet island retreat. Scotland is about the size of South Carolina, but that comparison is deceptive. The northernmost country in the United Kingdom, Scotland is crisscrossed by impassable mountains, deep valleys, large lochs and wide rivers, and very few roads actually running in a straight line. Distances are often misleading, and journey times need to be adjusted accordingly. Highlights of any visit include the two major cities, Glasgow and Edinburgh, as well as the scenery and long history of rural Scotland. Whether you are interested in the Whisky trail, the Gin revival, Clan history, the beauty of the Highlands, or you are a fan of the hit series Outlander, Scotland should be on your bucket list.

1 . A N TA R T I C A The coldest, driest continent on Earth with the highest average elevation, Antarctica is not a location with any actual residents, much less cities. But, that’s part of the reason it is home to some of the most breathtaking scenery and unique wildlife you’ll ever see. From November to March, visitors can travel through the Arctic Sound, a.k.a. Iceberg Alley, where you’ll see spectacular 10,000-year-old glaciers, their colors ranging from brilliant white to deep aquamarine. Also a must-see is the volcanic South Shetland Islands—Zodiac excursions get travelers close to the action to spot humpback whales and emperor penguins.

2. ICELAND As the name implies, Iceland has plenty of ice. With 4,500 miles of glacier, there’s ample opportunity for guided hikes and ice climbs. It’s also home to the Þríhnúkagígur crater, offering the chance to enter

3. PORTUGAL Portugal’s Douro Valley vineyards have served as the center of the port-wine industry for 400 years. But look beyond the bottom of your glass to discover the cliffs and beaches of the Algarve, the waterfalls and lakes of Peneda-Geres National Park, the gorges and peaks of Madeira, and the maze-like Moorish alleys of Lisbon. Feast on traditional salted codfish, or for your own fresh catch, ply waters teaming with sea bass, grouper, and salmon.

4. SCOTLAND Cruise the Caledonian Canal, which connects several Scottish lakes, including Loch Ness. If you fail to find Nessie, Urquhart Castle’s lakeside ruins

5. MOROCCO From Tangier on the Strait of Gibraltar to Ouarzazate, the gateway to the Sahara, this North African country ranks high on traveler wish lists. Here’s looking at you, Casablanca! The High Atlas Mountains provide great trekking, mountain biking, and more. Of course, Marrakech is always in fashion. Yves Saint Laurent made his second home there and fans can explore his gardens as well as the new Musée Yves Saint Laurent Marrakech. Geographically, Morocco is made up of four different areas: the Sahara desert, with its Berber towns and oases; the Atlas and Rif Mountains, perfect for hikers; the plains, home to the imperial cities of Marrakesh and Fez; and finally, the sandy coastlines of the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, graced by small beach towns and the cities of Rabat and Casablanca.

LAUREL DEWIT T

THE QUEEN OF CHAIN & METAL

By every definition, Laurel DeWitt is an artist. Sculpting elaborate crowns and headdresses is her passion. Laurel has been commissioned to design and create one-of-a kind art installations for Macy’s Herald Square, and performance pieces for Jennifer Lopez Latin Billboard Awards as well as for her Las Vegas residence. STORY BY KIANA MORIDI

T

hey say diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but LA-based fashion designer Laurel DeWitt’s rhinestone cowboythemed fashion show at OSU proved that shimmering chains and metals make for a bolder accessory. The studentmodeled fashion show boasted tones of silver and gold, black flair pants, fringe metal tops, Egyptian-style head pieces, bejeweled cowboy hats, and more. From Madonna to Lady Gaga, Dewitt has created pieces for some of Hollywood’s most beloved celebrities. Although DeWitt has a rap sheet that would make just about anyone feel satisfied, the designer keeps a humble and hungry approach. “When Beyoncé first wore a crown that I designed in 2017, I felt like it made my career explode,” she says. “But I don’t feel like I have fully made it as a designer, because as an artist, you constantly want to progress and evolve.” Here, DeWitt chats at the post-show Q&A about getting started as a creative, the designing process, and her hopes for a future museum exhibit. >

Kiana Moridi: Who have you designed pieces for in the entertainment industry? Laurel DeWitt: Beyoncé, Jay Z, Kris Jenner, Khloe Kardashian, Nikki Minaj, Lady Gaga, Amber Rose, Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, Madonna, and more. KM: What’s your favorite piece from the OSU fashion show? LD: I made a gold cowboy hat, which I modeled after a hat I designed for hip hop artist, Cardi B. KM: What does your design process look like? LD: If I have a client who has a deadline, sometimes I’ll get a call to make a piece overnight. I’ll do my sourcing in downtown LA and I’ll attack the project. But to build a collection, I first think of a starting point and theme of a show. From that point, I’ll go on Pinterest and find different photos that go

with the concept and I put it together on a big board on Adobe Illustrator. KM: How long does it take you to design a piece? LD: It can take anywhere from a few hours to a month - a couple of days is average. Usually, my average workday is about 20 hours. KM: What inspires you? LD: I mostly get my inspiration from vintage pieces or things of the past. I’ve created collections with old-time Hollywood movies in mind. KM: Future projects? LD: I’m working on a movie that’s currently filming with Ruth Carter, who just won an Oscar for the movie Black Panther.

KM: What’s your ultimate goal as a fashion designer? LD: I really want to have a museum exhibit of my pieces one day. I went to school in Brooklyn, so a lot of my fashion classes were in the city, and we went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Department and would look at all of the different pieces. Looking at that, it inspired me to want my own exhibit. If I have a project that doesn’t have a big budget, I just keep the pieces and hope to have an exhibit one day.
