letter from the editor... Few things can relax one quite so well as stepping away from the daily cares and opening your mind, body, and spirit to new energies. . . all the better if those new energies can be transformed into a life hack (to borrow a turn of phrase from the Millenial generation) that carries that relaxation back into the very cares we step away from. Abscond via plane, train, or automobile . . . even this magazine.

Hot on the heels of a trip overseas, I’m convinced now more than ever that the Luxiere experience includes stories from travels abroad. Istanbul fills the bill this month, and a historical look at the Maserati Quattroporte brings us right back home to Oklahoma’s oil and gas success story — even in the face of heavy odds against. Of course, your Luxiere experience wouldn’t be complete without a look back at the Luxiere launch party and an insightful look into this month’s Woman of Influence, the incomparable Brenda Bennett. So, with your turning of the page, may your new experience begin.

Hanging lanterns, like those pictured on the cover, began as metal parfume lamps in the 6th century. As technology and demand changed over time, the design became more decorative and the use became more widely adaptive. Istanbul visitors can now find these types of hanging lanterns in stunning and vibrant displays throughout the Grand Bazaar – one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world, with 61 covered streets and over 3,000 shops. In 2014, the Grand Bazaar was listed No.1 among the world's most visited tourist attractions with over 91 million annual visitors. To Read More About Istanbul Please Turn to Page 18

the women of influence campaign

Beauty in STRENGTH By Marie Neale

This month’s Woman of Influence is remarkable beyond measure. Brenda Bennett has walked through the valley of the shadow of death, and if it is at all within her power, she will make sure your family never has to. Currently the vice president of communications for the YMCA of Greater Oklahoma City, Bennett enjoyed a decades-long career in radio and television, which began while she was still a student at Oklahoma City University. She followed that up with a short stint as the owner of a television station before moving into her current field of marketing and communications. By all accounts, hers was a star that shone brightly. During those years, Bennett married and had two children, son Connor, now 21, and daughter Brette. Three and a half years ago, she had been divorced for eight month, and on the very first day of her new job, Bennett’s world crashed down around her when her beautiful, brilliant, artistic daughter Brette died by suicide. It is every parent’s greatest terror and it has painted her with an indelible sadness, a palpable grief that will live as long as she does.

Bennetttions, Brenda m munica

“My son truly saved me,” Bennett said. “He and Brette were best friends. The day after we’d celebrated Connor’s high school graduation as a family, laughing and being silly, she died and if I hadn’t had Connor to take care of, if not for him, it would have killed me, too.” Brenda Bennett cries beautifully and easily. Her grief washes in and out of her like a tide, sometimes receding and always returning. She is strong in her faith, after a period of intense anger at God, and has now become a one-woman mission, talking to groups of young people about difficult subjects like despair and depression. She brings with her information from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. She will talk to any group, at any place or any time. Her focus is specifically young women and teens. She fundraises for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, walks in its annual Out of the Darkness Walks, and because of her tireless effort has been nominated to the Oklahoma Suicide Prevention Council. Her wish is that we all become more thoughtful. More thoughtful of one another, of what we say, of our actions and of our inaction. “We have to let people know that moments of darkness that seem endless will pass. And we have to give people resources to reach out and get help. We all feel despair. We struggle and there are people who will help.” 12 | www.LUXIERE.com

or centuries the city of Istanbul, formerly By Marie Neale Constantinople, has been a source of mystery and intrigue for travelers. Its incredible architecture and fascinating history, coupled with the fact that it’s literally on the other side of the world, had captivated my imagination for years, so when the opportunity arose to visit, I didn’t hestitate to take make the journey. Our trip began in a richly-appointed first-class airline cabin. My first flight aboard Lufthansa, the airline proved to be as wonderful as I’d heard. The level of service was impeccable; a completely different experience than I’d ever had flying anywhere prior. After dining on grilled sea bass with steamed vegetables and fragrant basmati rice, accompanied by a perfect glass of wine, we settled in. Toiletries and sleep masks were provided for each passenger and after fully reclining our seats, we rested easily as we winged our way across the globe.

Our hotel in Istanbul was fantastic. The Marti Istanbul, with its neutral color palette and clean, modern decor stood in stark contrast against the architectural dissonance that is the city of Istanbul. Calls to prayer that rang out every morning at 6 a.m. ensured that we never overslept, which allowed us to get the most out of the limited time we had there. We spent three days touring the incredibly beautiful mosques. In recent years, authorities in Istanbul have established a tighter dress code for the millions of tourists who visit these holy spaces. As we entered the famous Blue Mosque, officials at the entrance handed out garments for us to wear as instructed and bags to carry our shoes in. Both men and women are required to dress appropriately according to the rules of religion. The rules of fashion do not apply. In the end, it made little difference as to what we were wearing when taking in the historic and breathtaking scenery in front of our eyes. Beautiful weather topping out in the 70s made walking the city a delight. The energy of the city is distinct and it’s palpable. It is a feeling I have not experienced anywhere else in the world thus far. The sensation is one of pure energy – slightly charged – and on the verge of unpredictable transformation at any moment. The architecture is simply beautiful; there’s really no better word for it. The coffee is decadent, and I crave it to this day. Its people are beautiful, truly gorgeous, although many women are covered. It is a place removed from the life we know in the States, and it is well worth experiencing. We toured sites that have been a part of the city since antiquity. The Blue Mosque, built around 1609, the Hagia Sophia, which is now a museum but was used as a church and a mosque for 1,400 years, and the Basilica Cistern, also called the Sunken Palace, which was constructed in 532. It is famous, in part, for its two heads of Medusa columns, the history of which are unknown. Each site we visited bestowed its own unique gifts upon us, in the way of experiences and memories. From Istanbul, we departed for Greece aboard an Oceania cruise, which was spectacular in its own right, even before we reached our intended destination. I look forward to telling you all about it in our next issue. Until then, dear readers, may you live “the life luxiere.”

through the city of Bologna, to make a point of visiting the Fountain of Neptune. The fountain is the symbol of the city of Bologna representing strength and fortitude. While observing the fountain, pay particular attention to the tip of Neptune’s trident. Mario Maserati selected that very trident as the emblem for the family business. The red and blue colors of Maserati are also the official colors of the city of Bologna.

Established December 1, 1914, five Maserati brothers combined their skills to build race cars for racing customers. It wasn’t until 1926 that a race car, the Tipo 26, carried the Maserati name and became a brand, promptly asserted itself by immediately winning races. In 1937, Maserati manufacturing moved from Bologna to Modena, Italy where Ferarri is also manufactured. Known for innovative engine design, Maserati cars continued their winning ways becoming the only Italian cars to win the Indianapolis 500 in 1939 and then repeating the feat in 1940. continued on next page www.LUXIERE.com

Quattroporte is Maserati’s most refined expression of their passion for excellence, combining sporty performance and classical elegance.

The idea of mounting a Maserati race engine in a sedan had been tossed around for a number of years. At the 1963 Turin Motor Show, Maserati shocked the auto world with the introduction of the Quattroporte, the fastest sedan in the world. Italian president Carlo Azeglio Ciampi selected the Quattroporte as his official state car. In 2015, the new Quattroporte 530 horsepower, 3.8 litre twin turbo V8, is the most high-tech propulsion unit ever installed in a Maserati car pushing the car past 300 km/h (roughly 186 mph). A V6, twin turbo, 410 horsepower version is also available. Both engines are built by Ferrari. With a completely retuned front suspension and extensive use of lightweight materials, quality is expressed through finely crafted details such as Poltrona FrauÂŽ leather, richly finished wood accents, contrast stitching, an 8.4-inch, full control, middashboard display, state-of-the-art audio technology developed with engineering specialists Bowers and Wilkins installed within a sleek and spacious interior all designed around a powerful engine. Even the undercarriage has been aerodynamically restyled to improve airflow beneath the body

to reduce wind resistance. Quattroporte is Maserati’s most refined expression of their passion for excellence, combining sporty performance and classical elegance. For future reference, the first Maserati SUV, the all-wheel-drive Levante, is scheduled to begin showing up in dealerships in 2015 or early 2016. 2016 is also targeted for production of the Alfiere, which is a tribute to the Maserati brother who founded the company in 1914.

TAX RECEIPTS As of August 2015, Oklahoma’s gross tax receipts year to date were still up compared to 2014. However, August receipts were down 3.5% from 2014. This was the fifth decline over the past 6 months. August receipts reflect taxes on June oil production.

the

State Chamber of Oklahoma Research Foundation reports

that, in 2012, 22% of all state tax revenue and 10% of state GDP was from the oil industry. Oil prices went from $103.59/bbl

OKLAHOMA GDP The Oklahoma Oil and Gas Association estimates that the oil and gas industry contributes $50 billion to the states $150 billion economy.

EMPLOYMENT The Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, found that total Oklahoma employment decreased by 0.2% during the first four months of 2015. This is a much smaller decline than in past price drops due to employment increases in other sectors.

in July 2014 to $38.22 in August 2015. One would expect such a drop to have a significant effect on Oklahoma’s economy. To help you assess the impact this might have on your personal or business finances, we have gathered some relevant information on the topic.

INCOME The 2014 Economic Assessment of the Oil & Gas Tax Policy in the state of Oklahoma by RegionTrack reported that 13.5% of the statewide earnings were derived from the energy industry.

We expect some oil companies to fail in the current pricing environment and to see increased mergers and acquisitions. Due to these mergers and acquisitions, along with price expectations, stock prices will probably recover before oil prices.

027.qxp 11/1/15 6:45 PM Page 1

In 2014, Saudi Arabia led an OPEC effort to maintain market share by increasing supply so that market prices would fall enough to drive out competitors with high production costs. While Saudi Arabia’s cost of production is low, they need prices to remain above $100/bbl in order to balance their annual budget. This led many to speculate that the price drop would be short lived. However, Saudi Arabia has been using their current account surplus (savings) to cover the shortfall and has warned government agencies to plan for cost cutting measures in line with $60 oil for 2016. Therefore, it looks like Saudi Arabia will keep prices low for longer. Additionally, the International Monetary Fund estimates that Saudi Arabia can afford low oil prices for over 5 years based on their bank balances and possible spending reductions. The U.S. Economy as a whole is not as dependent on oil revenues and benefits from the lower cost of fuel. Oil and gas extraction and petroleum products account for under 2.7% of GDP as of 2013. There is also an indirect contribution to GDP through our exports to oil dependent countries. For example, energy contributes 27% of Canada’s GDP. Exports to Canada constitute 2-3% of US GDP and could decrease as their economy slows under the pressure of low oil prices. However, Oklahoma is heavily dependent on energy production. Amazingly, even with low oil prices, Oklahoma has produced over 75.5 million barrels of oil the first half of 2015 compared with 73.8 million barrels the first half of 2014. (Source: US Energy Information Administration.) Additionally, income tax revenue for the state has managed to grow year to date. (See the excerpt below from the September 30, 2015 Oklahoma Economic Report.) Of course, more layoffs could occur the longer oil prices stay low and the impact to Oklahoma’s economy could become more dramatic.

What about our energy companies? The Oil and Gas Journal (www.ogj.com) reports that production costs vary widely by formation. They estimate the McKenzie County, ND area of the Bakken-Three Forks formation to have a break-even cost of $28/bbl while Divide County, ND had a break-even point of $85/bbl and over 80% of the Bakken overall has a break- even point below $42/bbl. However, some estimate the break-even point to be much higher. Bloomberg New Energy Finance estimates the Bakken to have a break-even of $73.72/bbl. They estimate a range of $43.01/bbl to $184.39/bbl for all formations. Whether or not our oil companies survive the decline varies on a variety of factors such as where they hold their leases, what hedging strategies they have in play, and their financial structure. In conclusion, we think clients should be prepared for oil prices to stay low for longer. From the various estimates of production costs, it appears oil needs to be above $80/bbl to for the majority of production to be profitable. We expect some oil companies to fail in the current pricing environment and to see increased mergers and acquisitions. Due to these mergers and acquisitions, along with price expectations, stock prices will probably recover before oil prices. There may be increased defaults in the high yield bond market (16% of which consists of bonds in the energy sector). Oklahoma’s economy may face more downward pressure, but appears to be performing much better than during the oil busts of the 1980’s thanks to employment contributions from other sectors. Overall, it is just a bump in the road unless your employment is dependent on the oil industry. In which case, we are here to help with your financial planning to make it through this difficult time.
