EDITOR'S NOTE I have a black-andwhite print in my home that reads, “Work hard so you can shop harder.” It’s one of my many life mottos; it pays proper homage to my shop first, ask later lifestyle. When I was little, I used to think my grandma’s home was the mall because we’d go shopping so much. “This is where GiGi lives!” I’d say walking through the mall’s automatic doors. Now, that I’m attempting to ‘adult,’ I’d say not much has changed. I own too many shoes and my romper collection is getting out of hand. For this Shoppe issue, we brought you our favorite trends from back in the day in Year We Go (pg. 63), a group of men with some serious style (pg. 37) and a fashion spread that details why it takes us women so long to get ready (spoiler alert, it’s because we’re sipping Lillet Rosé) (pg. 75). We also met up with fashionable local, Melanie of Thread + Seed, who gives us the inside scoop on why we need to “go green”

with our beauty routine (pg. 58). Plus, the blogger of Style With Nihan takes us on a trendsetting tour of all our favorite spots in Encinitas (pg. 83); they’re super cool, trust me. For our Alive Profile (pg.120), I talked with a group of women who are still basketballin’ at 80, er 90 years old, and they still got it. As a hooper myself, they are the ultimate #goals for when I’m a grandma. Read the story to learn their secret to staying young at heart. We are totally fangirling over our cover star, Emma Kenney, and her contagious vibes. We’re used to seeing her on our TV, but she has much more to offer than meets the eye—watch out, world. Lush green grass and delicately-manicured pockets of jungle make the Paradise Point Resort & Spa an ideal spot for our San Diego June cover shoot. In a secluded section of Mission Bay, Emma Kenney illuminated the beautiful, green canopy before the eyes of our LOCALE crew.

Emma delicately maneuvered through the soft leaves and flowers in a way reminiscent of how she put together an impressive collection of accolades that highlight her successful career. This east-coast-turned-west-coast actress is an ideal feature for our cover story—not even 20 years old, and she’s a star in two award-winning series. Music lover that she is, Diddy’s “Last Night” played from Emma’s phone while she hung from a tree branch, moving to the rhythm as photographer Michael Wesley captured her wild spirit. “Emma Kenney was amazing to work with. She had a great energy and you could tell she was excited for the shoot. We put her in an amazing tropical wardrobe in an equally as lush location. We used 85mm and strobe, plus natural light for the cover shots,” explained Wesley.

In 10 years, she went from being a finalist in an international film festival to holding roles on two popular TV series at the same time. Throw in about a dozen films, shows and a few voice overs in between, and you have a glimpse at a budding career for an 18-year-old actress.

It’s difficult to say that the star of Showtime’s “Shameless” and ABC’s “Roseanne” is an emerging talent. In fact, it doesn’t make any sense at all. She landed her role on “Shameless” back in 2011 when she was a precocious kid. Since then, her character has gone through such a long and transformative evolution that we forget that the real person behind the character was a girl making her way in the world and coming of age in Hollywood studios.

4 years old,” Emma said. “When I saw Mary Poppins for the first time, I wanted nothing more than to be Jane,” she chuckled.

Emma’s story begins on the other side of the country in New York, where she was born to a defense attorney and a writer, who both played an extremely important role in giving their daughter a push on her path. At an early age, her mother broadened Emma’s horizons by enrolling her in ballet, gymnastics, karate, soccer and other sports. But according to Emma, none of them took to her more than acting classes. “I wanted to act since I was

Emma explained that her father is an extremely talented writer, and having written for outlets such as the New York Post and Fox Sports, I’m inclined to believe her. Her father took an interest in Emma’s drive and proficiency in writing, and worked with her to perfect her craft. While her father enabled her to write way beyond the normal capabilities of a 7-year-old child, it was all Emma who decided to break into the world of screenwriting.

This was the point, as Malcolm Gladwell would put it, that Emma’s 10,000 hours toward becoming a world-class actress began. Acting is what Emma excels in now, but expect her to start moving toward where she started, which is writing screenplays and making films.

Bucket List “I want to travel Europe when I have some time off, play Janis Joplin in a movie or series and do a coming of age indie film like Lady Bird,” said Emma. Sing It, Girl! Emma is a huge music fan! She says her dad got her into music and among her favorites are The Beatles, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Cage the Elephant and Glass Animals. Native Knowledge Emma is a proponent of animal rights. She also has two dogs of her own, and a 20-pound cat —you read that right—named Cheddar. She hopes to open an animal rescue facility in the future.

Two years later, Emma was 9 and her short film, The New Girl In Town, which she wrote, filmed, produced and starred in, was a finalist at the New Jersey International Film Festival. “It’s like a ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ type vibe,” Emma laughed. Several short films followed as Emma worked toward paying her dues learning the industry and always making forward strides in her career path. For the past seven years, Emma has gone through her informative phase while holding down a steady role on an award-winning show. Not to mention all the other projects she’s been a part of, such as starring in “Boardwalk Empire” and doing a voice over in Epic. And all the while her youthful spirit prevailed. Emma goes to great lengths in order for her to relate to her characters. Prior to filming the pilot episode of “Shameless,” Mark Mylod, the producer at the time, gathered the cast for a meeting. Mylod asked them to each write a backstory for their character. It’s an exercise designed to help the actor own the character and polish the seams between real and make-believe. Since then, Emma’s done that for just about all of her roles. This includes her latest character, Harris Conner-Healy, on the revival and 10th season of “Roseanne.” It’s a show that unapologetically gets right in the face of people's beliefs and struggles. “Harris represents that teen angst and emotional struggle,” Emma explained. “She’s lost and doesn’t fit in, and may come across as a bratty teenager, but she just doesn’t know how to express her emotions.” When Emma arrived in Hollywood she admits that she had trouble fitting in. I got the impression she wasn’t the typical Disney kid the industry looks for. To fit in, she did a very natural

thing and tried to alter her behavior in an effort to make people like her. “Eventually, I finally came to terms with who I am, and I encourage young people to do the same thing,” she exclaimed. Her relentless work ethic is something she inherited from her parents, who she is close with, as they are very much involved with her career, but we see her on TV as part of two other families who confront very different forms of issues. “‘Roseanne’ shows a real family and that’s what we’re representing,” she told me when I asked if it bothers her that the show offends some people. She’s very aware that “Roseanne” ruffled some feathers in its first season. While the family in the show goes through life’s trials to make us laugh, we forget that it’s serious for the characters. “Comedy is scary!” Emma told me. “I learned from great actors like John Goodman and Roseanne Barr that unless you’re a comedian, to be funny, you shouldn’t try to be funny. These situations are very serious for the characters even though it’s funny for the audience, so we take these moments very seriously during comedic scenes.” Emma’s efforts at honing her craft are paying off, much to the benefit of her fans and followers. Expect her to shine as she reprises her roles as Debbie and Harris in new seasons of “Shameless” and “Roseanne.” Somewhere in the thick of that schedule she managed to star in Robert the Bruce, which is a prequel to the Academy Awardwinning film Braveheart. She has dreams beyond what she’s working on now, both as personal goals and career-driven aims. Cluttered shelves that overflow with home and beauty products are so passé. At Thread + Seed, an emerging home and beauty store in Bankers Hill, minimalism and bare essentials are always in style. Within this modern-chic paradise, you can find small-batch pantry items, houseplants in uniquely-designed pots and eggshaped holders, beauty products containing natural ingredients and curated gift boxes with an array of hand-selected goodies.

Owner and Founder Melanie Michaud possesses a knack for both marketing and connecting with customers—talents that not only aided her in her career, but have also fueled her passion for business since childhood. “As a little kid, I would create fake catalogs and try to convince people to buy my nonexistent goods,” she laughs. “I’ve been in retail my whole life, so I always had a feeling that I was going to end up starting a small business of my own.” Michaud’s first business enterprise, a boutique and home decor outlet called Graffiti Beach, originated as a seasonal pop-up shop in Venice Beach, but she soon felt San Diego—and its undersaturated craft market—calling to her. In 2012, Graffiti Beach opened its doors to San Diego’s South Park neighborhood, albeit “on a shoestring budget,” says Michaud. “But the community was so vocal in its support 60 LOCALE MAGAZINE

beauty really pays off in the end, although you may have to wait a while for your dry skin and acne to clear up as the toxins leave your body.”

Thread + Seed, meanwhile, is a relatively new establishment, less than a year old. Like its neighbors, its exterior is dramatic and eye-catching, with wood paneling stained slate gray and reddish-brown. On the inside, however, a stark white background (with one dark gray accent wall bearing the store’s logo) offsets wooden shelves holding ceramic bowls, glass jars with leafy, green houseplants and scented candles. Michaud’s dutifully curated gift boxes are found near the entryway: one contains a bath bomb and a book titled “52 Lists for Happiness,” while another features Tokyo incense and stardust pillow mist. But the focal point of the store is a large, rectangular countertop displaying serums and cleansers from relatively small brands like From Molly With Love and Lily Lolo.

This increasing demand for health-centric, affordable skincare does make it difficult to keep local favorites on the shelves. Among these frequently out-of-stock products is Precious Flower Oil by Holistic Science, a San Diegobased company and a favorite of Michaud’s. “This product contains marula oil, which makes it great for nourishing and hydrating dry skin—not to mention that it’s gentle enough to tone and remove makeup,” she explains.

The common thread amongst the array of products is “clean beauty,” a term that has been steadily sweeping through smaller skincare companies and Instagram beauty pages. “To me,” explains Michaud, “clean beauty means going back to basics and selling products that contain healthy, natural ingredients at a reasonable price.” She notes that harmful ingredients are abound in American-made cosmetics, whereas in Europe and Canada many substances are banned from beauty products. “Did you know that 60 percent of what you put on your body is absorbed into your skin and goes into your blood flow? That’s why grassroots efforts to create healthier alternatives matter so much. My customers and I have found that making a full effort to switch to clean

But how exactly does Michaud decide which products Thread + Seed will carry? “First, I have to hear the crafter’s story for myself and form a connection with this person. Next, because I’m a very visual person, I need to be able to see how the product will fit into the store’s vibe, which means the packaging needs to be on point. The final criterion is the overall quality of the product. My employees and I receive a ton of samples, so we’re always testing them out to determine the best of the best.” With the busy schedule Michaud maintains, she is continually re-energized and inspired by the people of San Diego, especially her neighbors. “What I’ve learned is that people who live within a three-mile radius of my shops are going to be my key customers, so I have to keep their needs in mind and listen to what the immediate market wants,” she says. At the end of the day, what Michaud truly wants is to help San Diegans become more conscious about taking care of their bodies, and making them feel as good on the outside as they do on the inside. I met JORGE CUEVA at his restaurant three hours before it opened. While sitting and sipping on a margarita, we talked as two bartenders and six other staff members were furiously cleaning and rearranging furniture and fixtures to get King & Queen Cantina ready for business. “I surround myself with the best and choose those who care about customers,” said Cueva. “I didn’t ask them to be here, I just told them I wasn’t happy with the bar. And now look.”

Cueva is a perfectionist when it comes to creating and opening restaurants. Unveiled in October of last year, King & Queen Cantina is his latest SoCal installment of Mexican-themed restaurants and bars. After opening Tempo Urban Kitchen in Orange County, he decided to change the concept of his new restaurant, but kept the menu.

That’s good news for San Diego foodies because King & Queen Cantina takes the best cuisines from around the world and fuses them together with a Latin flare. The Tijuana has Korean ribs, the Costa Azul has a honey Sriracha sauce and there’s also burgers, burritos and wings. Many of the dishes, such as the Tuna Tostada, will require some instruction on how to eat it properly. But that’s not a problem—in fact, it’s by design. “My servers don’t run food or drinks,” Cueva said. “They take your orders and talk with you, and they learn about the town and socialize. This is why King & Queen Cantina is always packed, because we start with regulars and then expand.” 92 LOCALE MAGAZINE

Cueva knows how to build a brand; he’s spent over 25 years in the business. He grew up in Guadalajara where the specialty is Birria, as Birriamen/Birria Ramen is Cueva’s favorite dish on the menu. He moved to the United States when he was 18 years old, and started working in a restaurant as a dishwasher.

Determined to make something of himself, Cueva embarked on a feverish pace of opening several restaurants every year. After opening more than 50 Daphne’s restaurants in San Diego, Orange County, Los Angeles, Ventura and Northern California, he decided to open his chain of restaurants in 2010. Usually, he’s on the run, and with Tempo Urban Kitchen, a number of Italian restaurants and a catering business in Orange County, he spends most of his time there. For now though, six days a week are spent at King & Queen Cantina where he is constantly ironing out the kinks in the new operations. When I visited for dinner, he was upset his bartender allowed me to order the fajitas. “This isn’t how you eat in Mexico. I’m taking it off the menu!” Another area where his attention to detail is beyond comparison is his selection of margaritas. For starters, Cueva uses only topshelf tequila. Rather than add a mix, he infuses the tequila with lemons, limes, oranges and agave nectar before the tequila is rebottled and mixed with handmade purees upon pouring. Cueva 94 LOCALE MAGAZINE

recommends the Gardez Margarita, which has the tequila infused with Serrano pepper and mango. The margaritas are now available along with the full King & Queen Cantina menu four days a week until midnight, and until 1 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. “Not many bars serve food that late,” Cueva said. And the late-night draw always finds a great setting in the two-floor restaurant on Kettner Boulevard. With Dia de Los Muertos decor and a second-floor deck, the restaurant is a perfect fit for San Diego’s Little Italy. As for Cueva, he’s expanding the King & Queen Cantina name, and he’s starting close to home. For those who’ve experienced the cuisine of Valle de Guadalupe, get ready for another gem in the Baja foodie paradise. Cueva teamed up with Rondo Del Valle to open his newest King & Queen Cantina location at the winery just last month. Even though his food will be served in a very different environment than Orange County and San Diego, he’s so confident in its tasty, universal flavors that he’s not changing a thing. That could work out well for him, as he told me he’s in talks to bring King & Queen Cantina to some of the most popular tourist destinations worldwide. Cueva has been successful for a long time now, and his hustle never ceases to slow down. When asked if he’s reached his ultimate goal, he replied, “No, I haven’t gotten there. I can retire tomorrow if I want to and live in the Valle [de Guadalupe], but I want to show the world what true Mexican food is.”

For comfort food-loving San Diegans in the know, Truckstop in Pacific Beach is the place to go for a Southern-style meal with a California twist. Boasting homemade breakfasts, such as eggs Benedict with hollandaise sauce made fresh every morning, and stomach-filling lunches like chicken-fried steak, this restaurant has pulled out all the stops to satisfy customers and keep them coming back in droves. And while the menu may flirt with the occasional healthy option—currently, the chefs are in the process of incorporating variations of millennial-favorite avocado toast into the lineup—the meat-based mainstays are not going anywhere, especially not the beloved Tri-Tip Skillet.

According to head chef Martin Bravo, this dish was inspired by Truckstop’s owner, an ardent tri-tip lover and a fan of Santa Mariastyle grilling, in which the meat is coated with pepper, salt and garlic prior to being cooked. The result is a mouth-watering blend of Southwestern spice and Midwestern heartiness, underscored with rich, seasoned sirloin. Served with two thick, fluffy eggs on the side and complemented by black beans and corn tortillas, the Tri-Tip Skillet “packs a lot of flavor, very much like a barbecue, but you can eat it for breakfast,” says Bravo. Cooking this meal is not quite as straightforward as eating it, however. “There are a lot of steps, with separate techniques for each,” notes Bravo, who goes on to outline the creative process behind the dish. “The first thing you do is roast the tri-tip with the various spices. Next, you boil the red potatoes, fry them up and season them with salt, pepper and rosemary. While the meat and potatoes are cooking, you mix diced tomato, chopped onion and jalapeños to form a salsa called pico de gallo. Finally, after the tri-tip is sliced up, you drizzle Sriracha aioli all over it, garnish it with cilantro, and serve it with the salsa and other sides.” That’s not all the restaurant has to offer, of course. At Truckstop, breakfast is served all day, every day; and hungry customers can chow down on giant pancakes, scrambled eggs and American toast topped with fresh fruit or Cap’n Crunch. In addition to the Tri-Tip Skillet, the menu presents three other skillet options, including a vegetarian alternative and a ham, sausage and bacon combination called “3 Pigs in a Skillet.” Dessert junkies will be delighted to find that instead of serving traditional appetizers, Truckstop favors sweet starters such as muffins, baked cinnamon rolls and fresh donut holes made every morning. To complement the

homestyle meals, the drink menu, which includes bloody marys and “Big Rig” fizzes with Han vodka, is on hand to add to that “I’m so full and content I don’t want to move” feeling. Since the menu is as comfortable as grandma’s home cooking, it should be no surprise to find that Truckstop itself is just as friendly and relaxed. The restaurant’s every detail, from the alt-rock music playing in the background to the unofficial jeans and t-shirts dress code, proclaims it to be the ultimate in casual—the perfect place to watch a ball game or share a beer with the guys. Black leather booths and dark-stained, redwood tables surround a central bar where thirsty customers enjoy bottomless mimosas. The wood-paneled walls are covered in trucker paraphernalia: tires and hubcaps, license plates and car insignias, even the front grill of a truck underneath one of the flatscreen televisions. Customers also have the option of sitting out on the side patio, where the creamy orange walls of the surrounding buildings give off an appropriately beachy vibe—yards away from the property is the Pacific Beach boardwalk and the bright blue ocean. To the residents of the laid-back Pacific Beach community, Truckstop is the perfect place to gather for a good time, and the restaurant staff goes out of their way to make customers feel completely welcome. “We want people to feel like they’re at home,” says the manager Riley Busch. “We encourage our customers to stay and spend as much time as they like here.” Adds chef Bravo, “Many of our regular customers know each other and hang out together around the bar. It’s like a real-life version of ‘Cheers!’” Between the cooking and the comradery, Truckstop truly feels like a home away from home. LOCALE MAGAZINE 105

It’s a rare cloudy day in San Diego as Scot Chisholm, CEO and co-founder of Classy, shows us around the company’s headquarters. Overlooking Petco Park and the downtown harbor, the office is full of enough perks to entice any millennial. There’s an expansive kitchen with kombucha on tap, an indoor basketball hoop for quick pick-up games and a spritely Shiba Inu named Cooper roaming the sprawling workspace, but the nearly 250 people who work at Classy don’t seem distracted by him—they’re on a mission to help others. The online fundraising platform has helped raise over half a billion dollars for more than 300,000 nonprofit campaigns worldwide.

Native Knowledge • After studying engineering in college on the East Coast, Scot Chisholm moved to San Diego and honed his entrepreneurial skills at a pizza place in Ocean Beach. He used grassroots techniques to spread the word about the restaurant, even knocking on neighbors’ doors to initiate taste tests.

Chisholm has turned CLASSY into an unstoppable force for good, but the company didn’t become a massive champion for nonprofits overnight. Back in 2006, Chisholm and a few friends were looking to raise money for charity so they took to the streets of Pacific Beach for the ultimate fundraising activity—a charitable bar crawl. “We were trying to raise money for the local chapter of the American Cancer Society. My mom had had cancer growing up, and everyone I was living with had also had their lives affected by the disease in some way,” Chisholm explained. “When we went onto the ACS’s website, the opportunities to volunteer or to give didn’t really resonate with us. We had an idea to go rogue and create our own fundraising event and donate our money to the ACS afterwards.” This was around the time that Anchorman was popular, so naturally, Chisholm and friends christened the event “StayClassy.”

Seventy-five people showed up and raised over $1,000, but when it came time to donate, it wasn’t as simple as writing a check. “We were questioning why the process of giving back had so much friction in it. At the time we weren’t thinking about technology at all, it was really just about, how do we bring more young people into the fold? How do we get them more involved in a way

that resonates with them?” Chisholm asked. Under Chisholm’s direction, the newly-founded company, still operating under the name StayClassy, began to organize fundraising events throughout San Diego such as fun runs, concerts and pub crawls. The fundraisers eventually got so big that Chisholm and his team knew they needed a better way to organize their efforts. “We realized we had outgrown the jerry-rigged

Ron Burgundy Tribute • Classy’s meeting rooms have Anchormanthemed names. “Sex Panther” and “I Love Lamp” stand out, as does the mothers’ nursing room, “Milk Was a Bad Choice.” Helping Others • Following the devastation of Hurricanes Irma and Maria in late 2017, Classy’s technology helped the Puerto Rico Recovery Fund raise over $2.5 million for disaster relief efforts.

Rebranded under the name Classy, the company released its updated technology in January 2011. Today, this technology powers thousands of campaigns around the world and has helped numerous organizations. Although each campaign is worthwhile, there are some that stick out as especially memorable. “One that I’m particularly proud of is the Baton Rouge Area Foundation campaign back in 2016. It was after the Louisiana floods. Baton Rouge Area Foundation had never done online fundraising, ever,” Chisholm explained. “Within a matter of 15 minutes we had a campaign up and running for them and they raised millions of dollars from people around the world to help the victims of the flood.” Classy believes in getting directly involved whenever possible. Chisholm currently serves as an advisor for Team Rubicon, a veteran-led disaster relief organization, and encourages his employees

to give back too, offering paid days off for volunteering and helping to place employees on nonprofit boards throughout the city. As an organization, Classy is part of the “Pledge 1%” campaign, in which companies vow to give a minimum of one percent of their equity, profit, product and/or employee time, back to nonprofits. Although Chisholm and his team don’t have a crystal ball to predict the future, going forward he aims to focus on creating tools to help turn one-time donors into lifetime philanthropic supporters. For customers, Classy plans on bolstering their technology’s analytics and communication functionalities. An overarching goal is to make donating more accessible for everyone. As Chisholm notes, “What we’re trying to do is bring philanthropy into new networks. To make it more convenient for people to give in their everyday life… to expose these organizations to more people around the world.” One thing’s for sure, no matter where the company finds themselves in the future, Chisholm and his team are intent on staying classy.

Grace Larsen is one of the first women in the Mission Valley YMCA basketball gym on Sunday morning. Donning her San Diego Splash jersey number 12,

laced up New Balances and basketball in hand, she’s ready to hoop. She begins putting up warm up shots, swishing a high percentage. Then she takes to the gym wall to work on her form shooting, flicking her wrist. Dribbling drills follow, making sure her crossover is just right. It’s seeming to look like your standard pregame ritual, maybe even one similar to NBA players Steph Curry’s or LeBron’s. Except there’s one subtle difference: Grace is 91 years old.

Rookie of the Year The SWBA also holds training sessions to teach new players the fundamentals of the of 3-on-3 lead by Susanne Carvalho, the SWBA Director. Get Schooled Class Act is a team of retired teachers that have been playing together for over 20 years.

We’re Going to the ‘Ship Numerous teams of the SWBA have qualified in the National Senior Games due to their high placement in the State Senior Games. About 12,000 senior athletes competed at last year’s games in Alabama. The Splash placed fourth in their age group.

She plays for the Senior Women’s Basketball Association where everyone has to be 50 years or older to play. On The Splash, which Grace is a captain of, everyone is 80 years and older. “I always wanted to play basketball, but I never had the chance,” says Grace. She didn’t start playing until she was 78. “I didn’t [watch it on TV] because I thought, ‘Well, I’ll never be able to do that.’ I kind of gave up on it. So, I took the chance and it worked out, and I’ve been playing ever since.” In 1995, The San Diego Union-Tribune wrote an article on the up-and-coming league and then, after it was published, 100 women showed up to the next tryout. The story went viral before it was such a thing. “I’ve seen it grow from two teams to 16,” says 89-year-old Marge Carl. The San Diego chapter of senior women’s basketball is the largest in the nation. Like Marge, many of the women are still playing since the league’s inception over 20 years ago. Competitive three-on-three half-court games are played on Thursdays and Sundays with two 15-minute halves. Kind of similar to how it was back in the day. “I played in high school and college, but that was in the early ‘50s and ‘60s when you could only bounce the ball twice and couldn’t go over half court,” says Jeanne Herlihy. The 17-year league vet plays for the San Diego Sun in the 75- to 80-year-old age group. “You couldn’t touch anybody; it was a noncontact sport.” She reminisced about an era where it was thought that sports weren’t good for women and they weren’t supposed to get too sweaty. Playing in the league, she’s been reintroduced to her love for the sport; she takes basketball lessons to keep her skills (and her brain) sharp. “I love it; it just really makes you feel alive,” she adds. Before Title IX was passed in 1972, a civil law that prohibits sex discrimination in

educational institutions, which includes sports, young women who had a passion for the game was limited. But, it was a little different for the league’s younger players. “If they can do it, so can I,” 52-year-old Sandy Devereaux adds. As the youngest player in the league, she sits in awe every week. “Everyone is an inspiration to me and who I want to become when I get older, because look at them! They’re still movin’. She’s 70-something, isn’t that amazing?” It’s her third year in the league and third year playing basketball altogether. She’s a newbie, so the other women are still testing her out. “They pull the old-lady card all the time,” she jokes. “That is their go-to card. And I cannot fall for it anymore because they end up fouling and pushing me and I’m like, ‘Hey, whatever happened to the old-lady card!’” The “rookies” and younger players aren’t the only ones inspired. YMCA employee William Battle has been the referee for this Sunday squad for some time and, beyond blowing his whistle, he’s bearing witness to the camaraderie that SWBA exemplifies. “These ladies here are all my sisters; we’re all family,” he says, knowing each player by name. “For them to continue to do it and do it so well, there’s nothing like it. I love coming here.” As the head coach of the JV girls at Lincoln High School, he says that he wants his team to see what they could become if they keep pushing; he wants to share a little of the inspiration. “It’s a nice group, especially The Splash…the 90-yearsyoung ladies that are out here, it’s motivating.” Encouraging young girls is nothing new for SWBA. As a nonprofit organization, their mission is to raise funds to send girls 12-17 suffering from monetary hardships to local basketball camps. Last year they sent 14 girls with about $9,000 in donations. This year, with a little help

from The Splash’s sponsor Miracle Whip and outside donations, they’re aiming to have even more scholarship money to send 16 girls to camp. Kathy Morrissey, the second-year SWBA Grant Fund Chair, explained that the girls have to fill out an application, send two references, their grades and answer essay questions about their achievements and why they want to go to camp. Because a lot of these women didn’t have the opportunities to play ball when they were younger, they wanted to make their emphasis as a league to give to those who have the opportunity, but face a financial obstacle. A bond has been created with the high schoolers to symbolize the love for the game is intergenerational.

“It’s a real sisterhood,” Marge is taking off her shoes after a tough loss. Wiping away her sweat, she pushes up her thick-lensed eyeglasses. “Any worries or problems you got, you soon forget when you’re playing basketball.” She then spills the secret on how she’s still able to play at 89 years old. “You got to keep moving!” Marge adds that it’s sad when she sees her friends that are younger than her in wheelchairs and immobile. She does cardio at Curves twice a week, basketball three times a week and takes a walk each day in between; she stays true to the moveit-or-lose-it attitude. “God created this beautiful body and this brain—use it! Don’t just sit there like a bump on a log.” You got that right. The women of the SWBA carry the same mindset. When you look out on the court, you may see prescription goggles, roller gym bags on the sidelines and the game’s speed reduced to a slower pace, but with smiles on their faces, you know their love for the game runs deep. And with all of that, these ladies epitomize that age ain’t nothing but a number.

This led into a deeper conversation about all of the challenges the blind have to face and how Google Glass, which at the time was still emerging, could be a great aid to those with vision loss.

Founded in 2015, Aira Tech Corporation was created to address a prevailing problem: how to provide people who are blind and visually impaired with instant access to visual information to enhance numerous facets of their daily life. This includes personal independence, productivity, self-confidence and success in employment and education.

Suman and colleagues created Aira by combining Google Smart Glasses with an interactive platform and personalized assistance from remote human Agents to help navigate and assist. “In our company mission, no matter how technical or complex things may get, we never lose sight of who we are serving: our blind and visually impaired users,” Suman said. They affectionately call their users “Explorers,” who now total over 1,050 across the US and Canada. Suman adds, “They are using Aira, ranging from reading bedtime stories to their kids and troubleshooting their computer, to running marathons.”

I have always loved to travel and have been all over the world, but San Diego is still one of my favorite places. Every time I travel and come back to San Diego, I feel so lucky to be able to call it home with its perfect weather, good restaurants, beautiful beaches and amazing people. Now that I have a baby, I love it even more. Before having my son, Enzo, I used to travel constantly. I would be home just for a couple of days and pack for my next trip. Now I try to limit my trips, but I definitely still travel plenty for work, events and now, family getaways!

“The best week of my entire life.” That’s what she said on the day we left Mexico after a whirlwind week of wedding activities and nuptials, and it was exactly what I needed to hear. When we were engaged two years earlier, we struggled to pick an exact date because both of us liked the idea of being engaged. We also had the hardest time imagining what the perfect wedding would look like or even where it would be. As with most newly engaged couples, we scoured Instagram feeds, wedding websites and asked for advice from friends, pouring hours into finding the perfect place to say “I do.” After what seemed like thousands of hours searching, nothing felt like “us” and we nearly gave up. Once we stopped looking, we discovered there was another way. Sometimes you are inspired and sometimes inspiration finds you. Mexico feels like a second home to me and Erin. We love taking last minute road trips to Rosarito, feeling the pressure instantly leave our bodies as we cross the border. We head to Tulum regularly to experience a laid back, coconut-watered-down version of Los Angeles and have flown south to Cabo and Todos Santos for everything from restorative couple weekends to full-blown, outrageous birthday celebrations. It was on one of these trips to Todos Santos, sipping on tequila and not thinking about our wedding, that it hit us—Mexico. We almost said simultaneously, “We need to get married in Mexico.”

Where we got married in Mexico was just as important to us as getting married in Mexico, so the search began again. Tulum was too far and Rosarito too close. Todos Santos was just the right distance and oh-so romantic, but lacked the hotel space we thought we needed. With 100 guests as our target, we wanted to find a place that was easy and inexpensive to fly to and could accommodate everyone at one resort. It was also our goal to find a location that felt like Mexico, not the modern, gentrified and reimagined version, but truly authentic—think Saltillo tiles and bright colors. Lastly, we wanted it to be oceanfront with an amazing pool. The Sheraton Grand Los Cabos, Hacienda Del Mar ticked all of our boxes. It was 146 LOCALE MAGAZINE

close to the airport and close enough to the city for our friends to make nightly excursions. Its oceanfront pool was large enough that we often came downstairs to find 40 or 50 of our friends swimming or riding the shore-breaking waves. Plus, the property was large enough that you weren’t bumping into someone around every corner. We flew from Orange County to Cabo San Lucas about one year in advance to view the property in person and they catered to our every need. They helped us arrange the flowers, DJ, rooms, transportation, cakes and food. They even arranged a wedding coordinator to answer all of the questions we didn’t remember or know to ask. We left after that weekend confident that we wouldn’t have anything to worry about.

Her sister, Amber, and two of her bridesmaids, Karina and Jacquelyn, joined her. Her last appointment of the day was at Grace Loves Lace, an Australian company with a bohemian boutique in Venice. They served the girls endless Champagne and berries. Erin tried on dress after dress but it was starting to look like she wouldn’t find the right one that day—then she spotted it. It was hanging in a corner, something she wasn’t sure she would like at first, covered in French lace with a long train. As soon as she slipped it on, she immediately knew. All the girls loved it as well and could tell Erin did too. She began beaming as soon as she put it on. Q: What is every couples favorite photo that you take? FR: When I got to the room where Erin was getting ready, I found her with thousands of emotions and feelings going on in her head. She was really nervous, excited and happy. She seemed to be crying a little but she really did not want to—she was worried about messing up the makeup. These kind of intimate moments are the ones I am very thankful to be part of. At the end, when she saw Erik for the first time, a beautiful smile appeared [on] her face.

Q: What was your favorite part of Erik and Erin's wedding? BH: I really enjoy the photo session because they just had fun! We didn't direct them much because they just blend together so well; that makes the shots beautiful. The first dance was very emotional with Makena singing and fireworks were amazing! Q: How many cameras do you use to capture the event? BH: We have two videographers, three cameras and one drone pilot.

Cristian Schwuger: My passion for gastronomy [started] at an early age and much of my professional development [was] at the hands of one of the most respected European chefs in Argentina. My passion for French gastronomy and my 10 years developing it have constantly motivated me to seek more experiences in several incursions to Europe and other countries, [and coming] to Los Cabos Mexico to take the position of Executive Chef.

Q: What ingredients did you use at the wedding that are local to Los Cabos? CS: Mainly fresh fish, [the] majority are from distances not greater than 100 kilometers from the [area]. In this way, we secure optimum quality products and it is something that the clients [notice]. Also, the great majority of the vegetables we use come from local farms, largely certified as organic orchards.

There were so many memorable events at our wedding. There were fireworks and fully clothed pool parties, s’mores on the beach and wave womping. I can say that out of all the weddings I have attended the one thing people don’t mention after is the food. After our wedding, and even talking to our guests upon returning home, it was all they talked about. They loved our

ice cream cart, custom Mexican beer bar and taco stations. They loved the wheelbarrow of Mexican candy and open-fire grilled meat. Chef Cristian offered a five-course, gourmet sit-down dinner when we met with him, but that wasn’t our style. What he created for us was a casual, foodie environment that felt curated from our tastes and got gold stars from all of our guests.

Q: Which station did our guests love the most? CS: The stations that incorporate fire are something...I know that as soon as I present [it], I will have all the assurance for success. I try to incorporate a large part of the cooking that can be done in the firewood and outdoors.

Energized from the exchange of vows on the beach at sunset, guests were escorted to the pool deck outside the reception area for tray-passed appetizers, a beersof-Mexico bar and a custom-crafted margarita. They enjoyed their drinks and bites while being serenaded by a traditional mariachi band dressed in white to match the bride and groom. After the cocktail hour was finished, the party was ready to start. Guests made the short walk to the reception area, which had panoramic ocean views and 154 LOCALE MAGAZINE

was decorated with cafe lights, flowers and rustic wood furnishings. The bridal party was welcomed by guests with the DJ playing “Now That We Found Love” by Heavy D and The Boyz, and the new Mr. and Mrs. Hale were introduced as we strolled into a round of applause with “Hold On, We’re Going Home” by Drake. We moved to our sweetheart table against the ocean and the party began in full. Then we had our first dance to the song “Latch” by Disclosure and Sam Smith that was sung beautifully by our daughter Makena.

Erin is a firework junkie. We often position ourselves on the Fourth of July in a spot that allows us to watch as many shows as possible at the same time, tapping each other the entire time saying, “Oh, look at that!” There is little in this world that makes her as happy as the explosion of a firework. Edson from Cabo Fireworks Company gave me the controller to start the show. I’ll always remember the look on my new bride’s face when I handed over the controller. This will always be one of my favorite memories. She pushed the button and seconds later we had fireworks exploding over our heads for three full minutes, although it felt much longer. 156 LOCALE MAGAZINE

Built in 1902, Crown Manor has been home to politicians and played host to celebrities, presidents and military diplomats. Many deals have been made on the grounds that have bettered San Diego and California throughout time. The entire estate is recognized under the Mills Act Historic Preservation Program, protecting the architectural and historical integrity of the English manor, which remains intact today. Alongside the grandeur of the estate lies an intimate feeling of community, family and history.

ISLAND COLORS Former resident party planner and internationally-known interior designer Elsie de Wolfe’s custom green and white lawn umbrellas later inspired the official city colors of Coronado.

POLO, ANYONE? In 1913, Coronado was the polo capital of the West. Former owner, Walter Dupee commissioned an expansion to the manor so that he could entertain and provide living quarters for polo players.

Facing the Pacific Ocean with coveted views of crystal clear water and the Point Loma peninsula, the Crown Manor is the Enchanted Isle’s grandest oceanfront estate. A sturdy brick wall lined with palm trees encases a meticulously kept lawn, flanked by the only Torrey pines on Ocean Boulevard. A tranquil fountain trickles into a koi pond, adorned by a replica of Monet’s “Water Lilies.” This front yard is home to family Easter egg hunts and Christmas snowball fights. Snow is imported to Crown Manor for kids to enjoy some “wintertime” fun before heading off to ice skate at the Hotel Del Coronado, a holiday tradition.

On one side sits a classic Steinway piano and to the other, a 1938 Porter music box, which when wound fills the estate with crisp music that evokes childhood memories. The space opposite the foyer inhabits the Grand Salon, resplendent with a 24-karat gold ceiling and lush, velvety green couches. The three-story, English Tudor-style mansion is comprised of dark red brick sourced from the Coronado Brick Yard and is lined with its very own “Crown Manor” paint. A large, central entrance lies just past two massive lion statues. It boasts marbled floors and jeweled chandeliers, which lead into the sprawling 22,997-square-foot interior.

Crown Manor’s Presidential Suite wing has hosted the most prestigious of guests, including the Clintons during Bill Clinton’s presidency. Pundits even dubbed the estate the “Western White House.” And like the White House, the attention to detail here is exquisite. Each light switch, vent and thermostat has been hand-painted to blend seamlessly with the wallpaper in every suite. The bathrooms feature malachite flooring, 22-karat gold sinks and claw-foot bathtubs.
