Kim Glen MARKETING MANAGER, TRAVEL COSTA MESA WWW.TRAVELCOSTAMESA.COM Efficient, effective and exciting—that’s how Kim Glen does business. A manager with many talents, Glen knows how to come into a company, cut costs, grow revenues and streamline processes using the most relevant and modern technologies. She has perfected marketing and management to a science. And, she’s doing it this time for Costa Mesa. As the Marketing Manager at Costa Mesa Conference and Visitor Bureau, Glen is damned and determined to put Costa Mesa on the map with the big cities where it belongs. Culture in Orange County has huge roots in Costa Mesa, with the Segerstrom Center for the Arts, South Coast Repertory, South Coast Plaza, John Wayne Airport, and the Orange County Fairgrounds all located within its borders. Locals may know most of Costa Mesa’s attractions, but Glen and her team want the rest of the world to know, too. They are rebranding Costa Mesa as a must-see tourist destination, as the “City of the ArtsTM.”

Q: What does your role consist of at Travel Costa Mesa? KG: I’m in charge of all marketing initiatives for the city’s visitor bureau, including the website, branding, promotion, PR and communications.

Q: How have you advanced the company as well as your industry since you have been working there? KG: Since I started, we have built a new website from scratch, rebranded Costa Mesa as the City of the Arts™, created Costa Mesa Restaurant Week, and are about to launch a multi-state branding campaign to let people know who Costa Mesa is and why they should come here.

Q: As someone in the know, what is Costa Mesa’s best kept secret? What is Orange County’s? KG: One of the secrets of this city is its culinary experiences. Restaurants like The Golden Truffle and Onotria which have exceptional chefs who have been in this city for 20 years or more. They offer really creative dining experiences with daily-changing menus and homegrown ingredients. There are so many small spots that have five-star cuisine that only locals know about.

Q: Any big plans for the future? What is your next frontier? KG: I’d like to work on marketing Costa Mesa and Orange County more to the international markets in the future. With a world-famous shopping destination like South Coast Plaza and an amazing performing arts complex, it’s a great destination for people from all over the world to shop, play and be just a few minutes from the beach.

Q: The business mantra or motto that you think about every day at work? KG: What did I learn today, and how can I use that to make me better at my job? Q: Now it’s your turn to give us a life lesson. What is the key to success, in your opinion? KG: It’s so important to keep reinventing yourself and to be up on the latest tools and technologies. I never want to be bored or stagnant in my job, just treading water until retirement. Also, always give credit to your team! You can’t be as good without them. Q: Who is your business hero? KG: I thought Steve Jobs was such an incredible businessperson and innovator. He seemed to have an innate knowledge of what people wanted in a product, was able to create it, and then make sure they knew they couldn’t live without it.
