P

lanning a wedding is an exhilarating journey filled with endless decisions, from selecting the perfect venue to choosing the color scheme and floral arrangements. Among these decisions, the rehearsal dinner often stands out as a heartfelt and intimate gathering that sets the tone for the big day. Hosting a rehearsal wedding dinner at home can be a charming and cost-effective option, offering a warm and personal touch to the celebration. From the guest list to menu, seating and entertainment, it’s time to create a memorable rehearsal dinner that you and your guests will cherish for years to come. Invitations and Guest List. The first step in hosting a successful rehearsal wedding dinner at home is to create a guest list and send out invitations. Typically, the guest list includes close family members, bridal party members, and a few close friends. Sending invitations well in advance will ensure that your guests have enough time to RSVP and mark their calendars. You can choose to send physical invitations, digital invites, or even a phone call, depending on your preference and budget. Décor and Theme. Set the tone for your rehearsal dinner with a carefully chosen theme and décor. Whether it’s a casual backyard barbecue or an elegant sit-down affair, the décor should reflect your personal style and the ambiance you want to create. Consider table centerpieces, linens, candles and flowers that harmonize with your theme and color palette. Utilize your home’s existing charm and features to enhance the overall atmosphere. Menu Selection. The menu is a critical component of any rehearsal dinner. You can choose to cook the meal yourself, enlist the help of family and friends, or hire a caterer for a stress-free experience. Ensure that your menu caters to the dietary preferences and restrictions of your guests. Incorporate a mix of appetizers, main courses, sides and desserts to provide a variety of options.

Determine the seating arrangement to ensure that your guests are comfortable and able to

interact with one another. Beverage Options. Selecting the right beverages is essential to complement your menu. Offering a range of options is a good practice. Include non-alcoholic choices like sparkling water, fruit juices and soft drinks, as well as alcoholic options such as wine, beer and a signature cocktail. Make sure to have a designated area for a bar or beverage station where guests can help themselves or be served by a bartender if you have one. Seating and Layout. Determine the seating arrangement to ensure that your guests are comfortable and able to interact with one another. Consider the layout of your home and how you can optimize the space for dining. If the weather permits, an outdoor setup can be a beautiful option. Use tables, chairs and linens that match your theme and create an inviting atmosphere. Entertainment. Entertainment can take various forms depending on the atmosphere you wish to create. Background music is a must, whether it’s a playlist of your favorite songs or a live acoustic 24

GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL january/february 2024

performance. Additionally, you could incorporate games, a photo booth, or even a short video montage celebrating your journey as a couple. These elements can help break the ice and keep your guests engaged throughout the evening. Personal Touches. One of the advantages of hosting a rehearsal dinner at home is the opportunity to infuse personal touches into the event. Display photos of the couple throughout their relationship, create a memory wall, or set up a slideshow showcasing cherished moments. These details add sentimental value to the celebration and help tell your unique love story. Lighting and Ambiance. The right lighting can transform your home into a magical setting for the rehearsal dinner. Consider string lights, lanterns, candles and fairy lights to create a warm and inviting ambiance. Soft, dimmed lighting can enhance the overall mood and create a cozy atmosphere that encourages conversation and connection among your guests.

Rentals and Equipment. Depending on the size of your guest list and the space available, you may need to rent additional equipment such as tables, chairs, dinnerware and glassware. It’s crucial to plan for these rentals well in advance to ensure availability and to avoid any last-minute surprises. Weather Contingency. This ensures that your event can proceed as planned, regardless of the weather conditions. Capture the Memories. Finally, don’t forget to capture the special moments of your rehearsal wedding dinner. Hire a photographer or designate a friend or family member to take photographs throughout the evening. These items elevate the bathroom from a functional space to a sanctuary of relaxation and self-care. They signify the importance of taking time for oneself and nurturing the bond between the newlyweds, whether it’s through shared baths or moments of quiet reflection.

Behind the Curtain of

Sellers’ Secrets

by JENNIFER HAWKINS, KEY2SEE TEAM

Transparency triumphs with thorough disclosures!

S

eller: “My roof leaked 15 years ago, but I fixed it! Why do I have to tell the buyer?” Buyer: “What if the seller doesn’t tell me about the basement flooding, and I find out once I already own the home?”

It’s time to discuss disclosure and how you can protect yourself, both when buying and selling real estate, in Washington state. Washington state has a document called the Seller’s Disclosure Statement, aka Form 17. Form 17 is a six-page document that requires sellers to disclose EVERYTHING they know about their home. Some of the major questions pertain to events like roof leaks, basement flooding, neighbor encroachments, remodels, permitting, and six pages more of questions. The seller has the ability to check a box: [ ] YES [ ] NO [ ] I DON’T KNOW [ ] N/A

If the answer is “Yes” to a question, such as basement flooding, roof leaking, etc., there is a section on page six for a typed explanation. It is important to remember, as a seller, we all understand things happen, roofs do leak, basements do flood, and electrical will need upgrading … but how do we know as the soon-to-be new owner? We know by the seller filling this document out fully and accurately. GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL january/february 2024

Now to the skeptics out there who say, “Well, what about those dishonest people who try to scoop things under the rug?” “What about those people who have tried to cover up something terrible that happened on their property?” Here is the answer: Buyers have up to seven years to report after the finding! You heard me right! After the finding, not the close of the sale, not the time of which the event took place … the time the buyer finds out about the defect—which is why our response is simply: Disclose, Disclose, Disclose! Buying and selling real estate needs to be treated like the biggest transaction of your life, because for 90 percent of us, it is our largest purchase in life. Passing on knowledge to the new owner is necessary, and we are so grateful that Washington state has made it mandatory.

Rotary Club of Gig Harbor A passion for service and community by JILLIAN CHANDLER

“I

was drawn to join the Rotary Club of Gig Harbor because of their commitment to serve our local and global communities. And the enthusiasm with which they work to achieve their goals is infectious!” reflects Trish Yates, Rotary member and volunteer. “Any time I meet with them or serve on a project, I feel an immediate connection to the community where I live.” For more than a century, Rotary International has "bridged cultures and connected continents." With more than 46,000 clubs worldwide, and a total membership of approximately 1.4 million neighbors, friends, leaders and problem-solvers, the Gig Harbor community is blessed to have such an active club based locally. The mission and vision of Rotary International is to: “Provide service to others, promote integrity and advance world understanding, goodwill and peace through our fellowship of business, professional and community leaders. Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change—across the globe, in our communities and in ourselves.” Locally, the Rotary Club of Gig Harbor, which was founded in 1974, has a mission to fund and support charitable projects within their areas of services: Education, Community, Vocational, International and Youth. “We strive to strengthen our community by encouraging generosity and connecting people who care with causes that matter. Our motto is ‘Service Above Self,’” shares Trish. The Rotary Club of Gig Harbor is a vital organization for the local community and its people. “The club is comprised of fabulous people who are passionate about the quality of life that we all enjoy here in Gig Harbor, and they truly love giving back to the community in which we live,” Trish says with a smile. The club partners with, and supports, dozens of communitybased and international projects every year. Sometimes members are behind the scenes volunteering their time, knowledge and skills, and sometimes they are right out front, organizing a project from start to finish. Frequently, they provide financial and logistical knowledge and support to other organizations. Programs and projects the Rotary Club of Gig Harbor either originated and/or supports through partners include many familiar to all: the Skansie Brothers Park Pavilion and flag pole; renovating the historic Midway School at the Harbor History Museum; constructing the greenhouse and garden fence at Wilkerson farm park; rebuilding the Peninsula Guild #1 Thrift

Shop after a fire; the popular Rotary Bark Park; the Rotary Aviation Zone airport viewing platform at the airport; and the Gateway Park pavilion. More recently, the club has been involved in beautifying the Wollochet interchange. The club also supports the community in many other ways, from the Annual Veterans Day Celebration, to the Gig Harbor Downtown Waterfront Alliance events, and the Women’s prison reentry program. “Serving youth is an important part of the club’s work,” Trish adds. “This includes our Interact and Early Act service clubs, and the club annually awards over $50,000 in scholarships. Children receive free books through our affiliation with the Dolly Parton Imagination Library program. They learn important social skills through the club’s support of Dancing In Classrooms, and they learn leadership skills through our support of the NJROTC program.” The club is also proud to support programs such as Communities in Schools, Night to Shine, Build-a-Bike, and The Spargo House. Trish volunteers on the Youth Services Committee and is the counselor for outbound Rotary International exchange students. She is also the co-chair for the 2024 Taste of Gig Harbor fundraising event, which will be held on April 6. The 33rd annual Taste of Gig Harbor, the club’s biggest annual fundraising event of the year,

will be held 5 to 9:30pm at the Gig Harbor Vintage Aero Museum (1108 26th Avenue NW). Attendees will dine on delicious tastes from local area restaurants and food purveyors while enjoying a lively atmosphere of fun and games, and outbidding friends and neighbors in the silent and live auctions. Tickets are available online at TasteofGigHarbor.com. All funds raised directly benefit the Gig Harbor Rotary Charitable Fund and go back into the community through the club’s service projects. The Rotary Club of Gig Harbor encourages anyone who is interested in what they do to attend one of their meetings. They welcome anyone who has a heart for service. “Community members are encouraged to work with us on some of our hands-on projects,” Trish says. “Additionally, we are happy to receive financial support for both the Gig Harbor Rotary Charitable Fund and the Gig Harbor Rotary Foundation, which transforms financial gifts and bequests into scholarships and service projects that change lives for the better— both here in Gig Harbor and abroad.” The Club meets every Friday morning, 7am to 8:30am, at the Gig Harbor Yacht Club, located at 8209 Stinson Avenue in Gig Harbor. Trish concludes, “We hope to see you there!”

She, like many teachers, works tirelessly to instill in her 150 students an avid curiosity, a fearlessness to pursue answers to their questions and a love for learning. This means that one of the things she does the most is to inspire and answer questions in her students, spurring on their own educational exploration. “One key life lesson I would convey to my students is the importance of cultivating a sense of curiosity, an active desire to understand others, and a profound love for learning. I like to think that I encourage my students to never stop asking questions, urging them to seek knowledge and challenge assumptions, and fostering critical thinking skills essential for making informed decisions in various aspects of life.” As a social studies teacher, this becomes increasingly important as she seeks to instill in her students an appreciation for culture and history. Kayla began teaching five years ago, in 2019, on the eve of the pandemic. Her first year of teaching was remote, with modified classrooms afterward, and subsequently has worked in a school under construction. This is her first “normal” sort of year, and she’s certainly making the most of it. She is incredibly grateful to have the support of staff to ensure a wonderful environment of support for her, and in turn her students. This year is especially important, as Kayla is serving as the digital innovation lead in her building. This last spring she was a part of the Peninsula School District’s AI research team, contributing to the exploration and integration of AI in schools. “I’ve been actively incorporating AI into my work and supporting my colleagues in an effort to streamline teacher workloads, while ensuring that all student accommodations and needs are met effectively,” she shares. “I am also working to empower my eighth-graders to learn how to use AI ethically as a valuable resource, rather than a replacement for critical thinking.” According to Kayla, there is a lot of room for how AI can have a positive impact in the school district. Kayla is a mentor, an innovator, a traveler, and so much more. In short, she’s a teacher. We are infinitely grateful for all she does!

avin Henrickson, an 18-yearold senior at Peninsula High School, already knows that he wants to be an entrepreneur, which is a term that doesn’t just encompass “innovative business owner” or “self-starter.” An entrepreneur creates businesses with their community in mind. Gavin wants to be an entrepreneur because he is innovative, creative, passionate, and he cares. This is what makes his work something he can be proud of pursuing. For Gavin, entrepreneurship is not simply a goal, but it’s something he’s already doing. It’s already a work in progress. Outside of school he runs two different businesses, one of which is a bike renovation business. He fixes old bikes and donates them to local nonprofits including The Multicultural Child and Family Hope Center, Red Barn Youth Center, KidVantage in Bremerton, and Gig Harbor FISH Food Bank. They then distribute them. Gavin has donated over 70 bikes! His other business is an eco-friendly Amazon brand that sells shampoo and conditioner bars.

I look forward to being your personal framer.

“Whenever I am working for my businesses, I enjoy it so much more than any other work that I do because I’m passionate about it. That’s how I plan on working for the rest of my life,” Gavin shares. That spirit of passion and service is what will make Gavin such a successful entrepreneur. In school he is team captain of the cross-

country team and ASB treasurer, maintains a 4.0 GPA while also taking 13 college-level courses. His favorite subject is science, as he likes understanding how the world works. A teacher who has inspired and influenced Gavin the most has been Ms. Beloate, his sophomore English teacher. She pushed him to strive for perfection in English, which challenged him in what he considers to be his “worst” subject. Now in college-level English classes, he no longer finds English difficult because of her influence. Once he graduates, Gavin will go to a four-year college for business and entrepreneurship. He’s applying to several universities, but his top two choices are University of Washington and Babson College. Gavin is already well on his way toward living a life where he is passionate about what he will invest himself in, and I can’t imagine he’ll stop anytime soon. We wish you the best Gavin. You’re on your way!

yson T. Fisher is a freshman at Peninsula High School and already has plans for his future. He’s not exactly sure about how he feels about college but has already made practical steps toward making a future for himself. He is the proud co-owner and operator of Frost Bite Delights, a small maker and seller of freeze-dried candy. He is trying to make connections with other small-business owners, which will allow him to grow and learn his own business. All in all, he keeps himself pretty busy. When he’s not running his business, or at school, he’s wrestling on the school wrestling team or playing on his paintball team. He would say that paintball is his biggest hobby, as it helps him to unwind. “I find peace out there on the paintball field and with other people,” says Tyson. After all his work in and outside of school, he deserves a bit of peace. The plan after graduating is to keep on paintballing and work on growing Frost Bite Delights. Although, his best friend’s family fishes for a living, and he knows he’s welcome to work for them as well. Keeping a small business in the green takes time and ingenuity, and he might need some consistent work to fall back on. However, he might just open a few stores once he graduates. Tyson doesn’t have all the details worked out yet, but he’s smart and driven. He’ll get it.

In school his favorite subjects are health and biology. “Health really opened my eyes to what I’m putting in my body and what is considered good nutrition,” Tyson shares. He also says that biology is interesting because he likes to look at bacteria and viruses. Learning about evolution is cool too.

ll a m S t r o p p Su um l A l Loca u sines s B d e n Ow

Tyson shares that his favorite teacher has to be Mrs. Christensen, saying, “She’s that one teacher who always checks in with her students to see if they are alright and if they understand what’s being done in class.” She puts her students’ mental health first, and it shows in how she treats them. She’ll also allow students to sit outside if they’re not feeling ready to participate, and it apparently has made a difference for Tyson. I’m sure it does for other students as well. Though just a freshman, with lots of time to figure out his path in life, Tyson is already off to an amazing start. We support you and are excited to see what’s next on the agenda for the next few years of high school. Have fun!

BRINGING ART TO SCHOOLS IN THE

GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL january/february 2024

Art is a form of emotional regulation, a chance for kids to make something tangible that they can hold in their hands. Art gives an immediate reward. It’s relaxing, creative, and it yields direct results. It’s quantifiable. Art classes are safe spaces, breaks in the daily routine. They are places that cultivate peace and inclusion and are a valuable support for education. In elementary school especially, art helps develop that part of the brain that thinks outside the box, encouraging visual and spatial development. Math and science also play out in the brain both spatially and visually, however art is a

fun and exciting way to support that development. What’s more, no student complains that they have to attend art class. It’s no wonder why parents in the Peninsula wanted art in schools. Still, there was the problem of funding, which is why the nonprofit Peninsula Hands on Art was formed. Now, decades later, Peninsula Hands on Art is a well-loved, fullfledged program, well supported by the community and the school district. Kids in schools throughout the Peninsula do four immersive projects a year. Each project takes an entire quarter, after which students start on the next after taking a short break as provided by the regular school break calendar. Each project is developed by a local artist, who is paid to contrive a project designed for elementary school children kindergarten through fifth. The artist is filmed, and volunteers from the community attend training nights where they learn how to facilitate the art in the classroom. Volunteers also learn the underlying basis for the art piece, which usually has deep cultural or historical roots. High-quality art supplies from Hands On Art are then divided into bins, along with the instructional video, and sent to schools where it is stored until the end of the project.

T

wenty years ago, parents here in the Peninsula got together to ensure that their children had access to quality art instruction in schools. Schools are responsible for a lot when it comes to our kids. They take on the emotional, physical and mental wellbeing of the students under their care. However, they have certain educational standards that must be met. This can mean that art isn’t fully funded in schools. While this was true here in the Peninsula, these parents still felt that art was essential—a valuable part of expression that pays its dividends in the positive impact it has on kids, both in and out of the classroom.

“ART IS SOMETHING THAT CAN BE LEARNED. IT TAKES PRACTICE.

On some level, everyone is an artist.” Often students do at least one 3-D project a year. These projects are no small feats or simple paper mâché, as each one takes seven weeks to complete; ample time for students to discover their boundless individual talents. “Art is something that can be learned. It takes practice. On some level, everyone is an artist,” says Karmen Furer of Hands On Art. These projects can be difficult, but according to Karmen, “Kids can do hard things.” And when you see how wonderfully these projects turn out, you see how true Karmen’s statement is. Especially in elementary schools, where students are learning basic skills such as how to hold scissors alongside how to mix paint. Practice develops muscle memory and expands the creative aptitude of each student, helping students create what they see both in their mind’s eye and what they see illustrated during instruction. These students really get immersed in the project, and they work hard. They turn out projects that encompass the whole context of the piece, both inspiring and cultivating an environment of healthy and relevant expression. Hands On Art provides an all-around experience. All this at no cost to parents or schools. “Both privately and publicly, we really do have such wonderful community support,” Karmen affirms. The school district, and the community, really do show a phenomenal level of support. Hands On Art was started by parents, and even though the program has grown, it is still a direct result of the desires of the community. It is because of this support that Hands On Art is able to provide such a high caliber of art instruction. Because of Hands On Art in Peninsula schools, our students are shown limitless potential. When it comes to their creativity, there really are no boundaries. What they see, they can make. Kids really can do hard things. his year’s Night to Shine, hosted by Harbor Christian Center at the Tom Taylor YMCA, is back and ready to shine its light on the people who deserve it most!

For those of you who haven’t yet heard, Night to Shine is an unforgettable prom night experience for guests with special needs ages 14 and older. Because prom night in schools is not often an event that individuals with special needs can attend, Night to Shine is an event catered just for them. This year’s 220 Kings and Queens are invited to the Night to Shine event on February 9, just in time for Valentine’s! This year, especially, is sure to stun, as its theme is to be “shinier than ever before”! Back are the limo rides, the free professional hair and makeup, karaoke, and the crowning of Kings and Queens. Much of the same considerations are made toward special needs such as sensory rooms, bathroom attendants, a special one-on-one buddy system, dance teams, and red carpet attendants. Parents and caretakers are invited to relax as well in a separate lounge meant to facilitate rest, with delicious food, music, and optional relaxing activities such as massage therapy. Every year there are always new and fun creative tweaks that are made, making every year a true celebration of the unique characteristics of the people who attend this special prom night. This year guests will get to enjoy confetti guns and a balloon drop! There is also a lot of additional community involvement,

Additional churches have gotten on board as well, including Gig Harbor Church of the Nazarene and Chapel Hill. All this support has really helped with volunteers and has allowed the event organizers to step up their game. For instance, this year there will be catered food for both guests and their caretakers. There will be love bomb signs everywhere, which are protest picket signs filled with words of encouragement meant to shout out positive words that lift up instead of tear down. There will also be additional provisions for a wider audience of special needs, such as noise-canceling headphones provided for guests with certain auditory sensitivities.

A

honeymoon is a cherished rite of passage for newlyweds; a time to revel in the joy of marriage and create unforgettable memories together. It's a journey that marks the beginning of a lifelong adventure. To ensure your honeymoon is nothing short of perfect, careful planning and selecting the ideal destination are paramount. It’s time to create a honeymoon that dreams are made of. Planning your honeymoon should ideally begin well before your wedding day. By giving yourself ample time, you can avoid the stress that often accompanies last-minute preparations. Determine your budget for the honeymoon. Knowing your financial limits will help you narrow down your options and plan accordingly. Decide when you want to go on your honeymoon. Some couples choose to depart immediately after the wedding, while others opt for a delayed honeymoon. Your choice will impact the destinations available to you. Make a list of what you both want from the honeymoon. Is it relaxation on a pristine beach, cultural exploration, adventure, or a combination of these? Prioritizing your desires will help you choose a destination that caters to your interests. Your honeymoon budget is a crucial aspect of planning, as it will dictate the scope of your trip. Allocate funds by dividing your budget into categories like transportation, accommodation, activities, meals, and miscellaneous expenses. This will help you keep track of your spending. All-inclusive resorts and packages can be costeffective, as they often cover accommodations,

You can embark on a journey that not only celebrates your love but also sets the stage for a lifelong adventure together.

Consider surprise activities or romantic gestures during your trip. This could be a couple’s spa day, a private sunset dinner on the beach or a hot air balloon ride at sunrise. Plan a loose itinerary that includes must-see attractions and activities but also leaves room for spontaneity. The balance between structure and flexibility is key. Invest in a good camera or hire a professional photographer to capture the special moments of your honeymoon. These photos will be cherished mementos for years to come. As your honeymoon approaches, pay careful consideration when packing, especially if you're traveling to a destination with specific weather conditions or cultural norms. Check the weather and pack accordingly, including appropriate clothing for different activities and temperatures. Mix and match clothing items to create multiple outfits. Ensure you have all necessary travel documents, including passports, visas and travel insurance. Make copies of these documents in case of loss or theft. And don't forget to pack essentials like medication, toiletries, chargers and travel adapters. Try to pack efficiently to avoid excess baggage fees and the hassle of carrying heavy bags. A honeymoon is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and planning it meticulously is key to creating lasting memories. With careful planning and a thoughtful approach, you can embark on a journey that not only celebrates your love but also sets the stage for a lifelong adventure together. So, start early, seek inspiration, and create a honeymoon that reflects your unique love story.

Paying Homage to Gig Harbor and its History Gig Harbor Wine Co. announces new tasting room by JILLIAN CHANDLER

“W

hile we both currently hold full-time jobs, our passion lies in the wine industry,” Robin Egeland smiles. “We love being surrounded by people, whether it's hosting a dinner party, traveling to fun destinations, or simply meeting new people—it’s part of the reason why we decided to start Gig Harbor Wine Co. winery. It's not just about the wine itself, but the people you get to meet along the way. We've known for years that we wanted to have our own wine label. What we didn't know is that we would also embark on opening our very own winery and tasting room!” Robin and husband Ben established Gig Harbor Wine Co. in 2021 with their online bottle sales. Next on the horizon? Opening their brick-and-mortar tasting room in the heart of Gig Harbor—with plans to open the doors to the community early this year. Customers will be treated to a welcoming, relaxing and intimate space, with seating for 22 guests, where they can stop in after work with friends or colleagues, or bring the kids along for a family outing. “We want everyone who walks through our door to feel like they are part of our close family; a place where they know the minute that they walk in that they already can't wait to come back,” Robin smiles. Wines will be available by the glass, bottle and flights. Small snacks will be served as well, such as popcorn, nuts and olives, as well as ready-to-eat packaged charcuterie and crackers. “Our winemaker, Aryn Morell (out of Walla Walla), was really one of the deciding factors in opening up a physical space for wine tasting,” Robin reflects. “He's a brilliant mind and has a beautiful way of creating wines that truly represent our tastes. Our wine label and story bring in the small-town vibes with big, bold, flavorful wines from Columbia Valley.” Due to their love of Gig Harbor and its history, all of their wines are specifically named for something relating to the area and its past—Rooster Race Rosé, Holly King Sauvignon Blanc, Netshed Red Blend, Reserve Silver Glide Syrah and Reserve Sturdy Gertie Cabernet Sauvignon. The back of each bottle shares stories highlighting interesting and fun historical events, places and families. They currently offer five varietals, though Robin notes that they have plans to introduce additional varietals as they open. At Gig Harbor Wine Co., their hope is for their wines to speak for themselves. “We pride ourselves in offering exceptional wines that are bold, complex, and make you want to have another glass,” Robin explains. “We believe wine has the power to bring people together; whether it's a celebratory glass, a first date, or simply

sharing a bottle with some loved ones. We hope our wine will bring people together in all kinds of ways.” The couple enjoys attending the many local events Gig Harbor is known for and love getting to know both locals and visitors to the area. “There's nothing better than taking a stroll downtown, checking out local businesses, or a simple picnic in the park with family. We’ve been a part of some local events such as the Sip and Stroll, Maker’s Market and History Rocks events, and we hope to continue to attend these events and grow our relationships within the community. We also strongly believe in supporting local businesses, so we do our best to collaborate as much as possible and support however we can.” Be sure to follow Gig Harbor Wine Co. on Facebook and Instagram for up-to-date details on their grand opening. A

s the calendar turns a fresh page and the promise of a new year beckons, it’s the perfect time to embark on a journey of selfimprovement. Year after year, many of us set ambitious resolutions, and at the top of the list, more often than not, is a commitment to better health. It’s time to make your health a priority, from setting realistic goals to adopting sustainable habits and seeking professional guidance. It’s a new year and time for a new you! The foundation of any successful health journey begins with setting clear and realistic goals. It’s easy to get carried away with grandiose resolutions like losing 50 pounds in a month or completely eliminating your favorite indulgence. However, such lofty ambitions can often lead to disappointment and frustration. Instead, start by identifying specific, attainable objectives that align with your long-term vision for a healthier you. For instance, if your ultimate goal is to lead a more active lifestyle, consider setting a realistic target like walking for 30 minutes a day or hitting the gym three times a week. These smaller milestones will not only boost your confidence but also make it easier to track your progress. The key to lasting change lies in creating a sustainable routine. It’s tempting to make drastic changes in January, but consistency is what truly counts. Whether it’s adopting a new workout regimen, overhauling your diet, or dedicating time to meditation and self-care, the key is to make these changes a part of your daily life. Start by incorporating one new habit at a time. This gradual approach makes it easier for your body and mind to adapt, increasing the chances of long-term success. Remember, the new year isn’t just about quick fixes; it’s about building a healthier, more fulfilling life.

Nutrition is a cornerstone of good health, and the new year is an ideal time to reevaluate your eating habits. Instead of fad diets or extreme restrictions, focus on mindful eating. This means paying attention to what you eat, savoring each bite, and making conscious choices. Consider incorporating more whole foods into your diet, such as fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and whole grains. Keep in mind that small changes can yield big results. Swap sugary drinks for water, reduce portion sizes, and limit processed foods. Remember, it’s about progress, not perfection. In the pursuit of physical health, it’s essential not to neglect your mental wellbeing. Stress, anxiety and burnout can take a toll on your overall health, so make mental wellness a priority this

Don’t hesitate to seek professional help if you’re struggling with your mental health. A therapist or counselor can provide valuable support and guidance as you navigate life’s ups and downs. Remember, taking care of your mind is just as important as taking care of your body.

As you work toward your health and wellness goals, don’t forget to celebrate your progress along the way. Each small achievement is a step closer to becoming the best version of yourself. Whether it’s fitting into those jeans you haven’t worn in years, achieving a personal best in the gym, or simply feeling more energetic, take a moment to acknowledge and appreciate your accomplishments.

Exercise is a fundamental component of a healthy lifestyle. Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or new to physical activity, finding a fitness routine that suits your interests and goals is crucial. Start by exploring different activities until you discover something you genuinely enjoy. Setting short-term fitness goals can also help keep you motivated. Consider signing up for a 5k run, a dance class or a weekly hiking group. Having an event or goal to work toward can make exercising more enjoyable and purposeful. Embarking on a health journey is often more successful when you have a support system in place. Share your goals with friends and family who can offer encouragement and accountability. Consider joining online communities or local groups with similar interests or objectives. Having others to share your challenges and successes with can make the journey more fulfilling. While adopting healthy habits is essential, don’t forget about the importance of regular health checkups. Visiting your health care 64

Sometimes, achieving your health goals may require professional guidance. Whether you’re looking to lose weight, manage a chronic condition or develop a personalized fitness plan, consulting with health care professionals can provide valuable insights and support. Consider partnering with a registered dietitian, personal trainer or physical therapist who can tailor their expertise to your specific needs. Life is full of unexpected twists and turns, and your health journey is no exception. There may be setbacks, challenges, and moments when you deviate from your plan. It’s essential to embrace adaptability and resilience during these times. Setbacks are a part of any journey, and what truly matters is your ability to bounce back and stay committed to your health goals. Avoiding a War of Words b y F E L I C I A S O L E I L , AT TO R N E Y/ M E D I ATO R

microaggressions. Nor do you need to respond in kind if those issues color a communication from your co-parent.

ow can a divorcing couple with a high level of interpersonal conflict learn to negotiate the terms of their divorce while also attempting to structure a plan for constructive coparenting when all they do is argue?

Instead, how about this: “Hi. I need to attend a work meeting on Friday, so I won’t be able to pick up the kids from school and get them to your place by 4pm. (Informative) Please let me know by 5pm tomorrow if you can pick up the kids instead. Otherwise, I’ll get my sister to do that for me. (Firm) Hope the rest of your week goes well. Thanks! (Friendly)

H

As a divorce mediator, it is apparent to me the couples who have done extensive work in counseling prior to divorce. They use strategies such as active listening, providing feedback on what they think they heard, using “I” statements rather than “You” statements, and effective use of pausing and managing their emotions to remain civil and respectful during negotiations. Couples who don’t possess these skills frequently present in mediation with an enormous amount of blame, “all or nothing” thinking, and heightened emotional responses. Rather than taking responsibility for their part in the conflict, one or both parties seek to out-blame the other and focus on the past, rather than focusing on problemsolving and looking to the future. Among other things, this can get needlessly expensive. If you find yourself in this situation, here are some tips: 1) Learn to manage your emotions. This does not mean to disregard your emotions. It means knowing how and when it is appropriate to express them (preferably not in front of the other party in a way that will antagonize a similar response). 2) Practice flexible thinking. Drop the defensive rigidity. Be willing to explore options toward problem-solving. 3) Utilize BIFF when communicating. Employ using BIFF (Brief, Informative, Firm and Friendly) in your communications with your ex if you find constructive dialogue is absent. This is a simple technique developed by Bill Eddy, a prominent pioneer in the field of conflict resolution skills. For example, if you need to ask your co-parent to change the dropoff time for the next exchange of children, you don’t need to engage in a detailed explanation coupled with personal innuendos and

66

GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL january/february 2024

If you have both agreed to exercise BIFF, the response would ideally be: “No problem. I’ll pick up the kids from school. (Brief and informative) I can’t always do this due to my own work obligations, but I have no meetings this Friday, so I’m happy to help. (Firm and Friendly) Of course, if the response to the request is not ideal and filled with accusations, an unwillingness to help, or takes advantage of the request in a negative way, your reply can again employ BIFF as follows: “Thanks for getting back to me. (Friendly) I’ll just have my sister do the transportation for me so the kids will be there on time.” (Informative and Firm) The “Brief ” part is that this is all you need to say. Period. This solves a problem without participating in a potentially abusive and extended exchange triggered by a simple request. You aren’t inviting it, nor are you reacting to it. Negative communication only keeps you mired in the conflicts of the past and serves no useful purpose other than to vent your own frustrations on deaf ears. It becomes a vicious cycle. As Jeff Daly said, “Two monologues do not make a dialogue.” Manage emotions, problem-solve and use BIFF to help get you there! UNLOCKING RELIEF How dental care can ease debilitating headaches and migraines

eadaches and migraines are common afflictions that can significantly impact one’s quality of life. While these conditions can have various triggers, including stress, diet, and hormonal changes, an often-overlooked contributor is dental issues. Dentists provide essential services that can help alleviate headache and migraine pain in patients, offering a holistic approach to managing these debilitating conditions.

Dental Health and Inflammation

Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorder Treatment

Neuromuscular Dentistry

The TMJ is the hinge joint connecting the jawbone to the skull. TMJ disorders can cause jaw pain, facial pain and headaches. Dentists are trained to diagnose and treat TMJ disorders. They may recommend oral appliances, such as splints or mouthguards, to help realign the jaw and relieve pressure on the joint, subsequently reducing headache frequency and intensity.

This specialized field focuses on the relationship between the muscles, nerves and teeth in the mouth. Neuromuscular dentists assess the proper alignment of the jaw and offer treatments that target headaches resulting from dental misalignments. These treatments may include orthotics, physical therapy and orthodontic adjustments.

Bite Alignment and Occlusion Adjustment Malocclusion, or improper bite alignment, can lead to muscle tension and strain in the jaw, neck and head, triggering headaches. Dentists can assess a patient’s bite and make necessary adjustments. Orthodontic treatments, dental crowns or bridges may be recommended to correct the alignment, which can alleviate the associated pain. Teeth Grinding and Clenching Solutions Bruxism, the involuntary grinding or clenching of teeth, commonly occurs during sleep and can result in headaches upon waking. Dentists can create custom-fit night guards to prevent teeth grinding and reduce the strain on jaw muscles. By addressing bruxism, dental professionals help prevent headache triggers at their source.

68 68

GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL january/february 2024

Infections or inflammation in the mouth, such as gum disease, can cause a systemic response that includes headaches. Regular dental checkups and cleanings can prevent such issues. Moreover, treating existing oral infections can lead to a reduction in overall bodily inflammation and subsequently alleviate headache symptoms.

Identifying Tooth-Related Pain Sometimes tooth pain can manifest as headache pain, especially when the pain is referred to other areas of the head. Dentists are skilled at identifying tooth-related pain and addressing the underlying dental issues, which can lead to a reduction in headache discomfort. Dental services offer a comprehensive approach to managing headache and migraine pain. By addressing issues like TMJ disorders, bite alignment, teeth grinding and oral health, dentists play a vital role in alleviating pain and improving the overall well-being of their patients. If you suffer from chronic headaches or migraines, consulting with your dentist to explore potential dental contributions to your symptoms could lead to effective relief and an improved quality of life.

Happy New Year from New Foundation Wealth Group! Consider reviewing or establishing your budget a r t i c l e C o u r te s y o f N A N C Y H A R R I S , C M F C , C D FA P R E S I D E N T, L P L F I N A N C I A L P L A N N E R , N E W FO U N D AT I O N W E A LT H G R O U P

o you ever wonder where your money goes each month? If so, you may want to review or establish a budget to help you keep track of how you spend your money and help you reach your financial goals. 1. Examine your financial goals. Start by making a list of your short-term goals (e.g., new car, vacation) and your long-term goals (e.g., your child’s college education, retirement). Next, ask yourself: How important is it for me to achieve this goal? How much will I need to save? Armed with a clear picture of your goals, you can work toward establishing a budget that can help you reach them. 2. Identify your current monthly income and expenses. Start by adding up your income. In addition to your regular salary and wages, be sure to include other types of income, such as dividends, interest, and child support. Next, add up all of your expenses. To see where you have a choice in your spending, it helps to divide them into two categories: fixed expenses (e.g., housing, food, clothing, transportation) and discretionary expenses (e.g., entertainment, vacations, hobbies). You’ll also want to make sure that you have identified any out-of-pattern expenses, such as holiday gifts, car maintenance, home repair, and so on. To make sure that you’re not forgetting anything, it may help to look through canceled checks, credit card bills, and other receipts from the past year. Finally, as you list your expenses, it is important to remember your financial goals. Whenever possible, treat your goals as expenses and contribute toward them regularly.

3. Evaluate your budget. Once you’ve added up all of your income and expenses, compare the two totals. To get ahead, you should be spending less than you earn. If this is the case, you’re on the right track, and you need to look at how well you use your extra income. If you find yourself spending more than you earn, you’ll need to make some adjustments. Look at your expenses closely, and cut down on your discretionary spending. And remember, if you do find yourself coming up short, don’t worry! All it will take is some determination and a little self-discipline, and you’ll eventually get it right. 4. Tips to help you stay on track: • Involve the entire family: Agree on a budget up front, and meet regularly to check your progress. • Stay disciplined: Try to make budgeting a part of your daily routine. • Start your new budget at a time when it will be easy to follow and stick with the plan (e.g., the beginning of the year, as opposed to right before the holidays). • Find a budgeting system that fits your needs (e.g., budgeting software). • Distinguish between expenses that are “wants” (e.g., designer shoes) and expenses that are “needs” (e.g., groceries). • Build rewards into your budget (a little getaway or dinner out). Big Food and Big Tobacco Is history repeating itself? AIM TO REVERSE DISEASE, RECLAIM YOUR HEALTH, AND LOVE YOUR BODY AGAIN.

b y C H R I STO P H E R J. STA DT H E R R , M D

here are some frightening parallels between the processed food industry and the tobacco industry.

It took decades of evidence to overturn the ingrained habits and beliefs about the health hazards of smoking. The tobacco manufacturers faced hundreds of lawsuits starting in the mid-1950s but were successful against all of them. Litigation efforts escalated into a national legislative settlement in 1998 to recover billions of dollars in health care costs and placing numerous restrictions on advertising. We’re in a similar position with processed food, with mounting evidence showing the harms of ultra-processed foods. The industries of Big Food and Big Tobacco share a few key similarities: • Both are dominated by a few major companies. • Both target young children with marketing to create life-long customers. • Both focus on creating addictive habits. • Both blame the consumer for the harm caused by their products. Tobacco companies invested heavily in the food industry and deployed their tactics to make food irresistible. In place of nicotine, the addictive snare in processed foods is high-fructose corn syrup. Tobacco giant Philip Morris owned Kraft Foods and General

72

GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL january/february 2024

Foods—merged together to become what was then the largest food company in the world. A recent study examined the food brands owned by tobacco companies related to the hyperpalatable nature of such foods— combinations of ingredients (fat, sugar, sodium, and carbohydrates) that create an artificially rewarding eating experience. Such combinations of nutrients do not occur in nature, and they are associated with overconsumption of food. These combinations of ingredients are expertly engineered to hit the “bliss point”—that sensory profile where you like food the most. Foods that were developed by tobacco companies were 29 percent more likely to be fat-and-sodium hyperpalatable and 80 percent more likely to be carbohydrate-andsodium hyperpalatable, compared to foods not produced by tobacco companies. Big Food is working from the same playbook as Big Tobacco, utilizing the same deceptive tactics to create lifelong customers of ultraprocessed food. These are powerful companies with significant market reach and brilliant marketing strategies. When it comes to food, the stakes are just as high as, if not more than, tobacco due to the perceived innocence of food products relative to cigarettes, as well as being considered a “necessary” item. We must avoid normalizing the consumption of these foods that are slowly destroying our health.

f you have been wanting a 100 percent natural approach to combat signs of facial aging, PRF EZ Gel may be the right treatment for you! Gig Harbor Aesthetics offers PRF EZ Gel, an autologous (derived from your own body) regenerative gel that uses your body’s own proteins and growth factors for facial rejuvenation. This treatment is appropriate for patients who seek an all-natural approach to rejuvenating under-eye hollows, nasolabial folds, “smile lines,” wrinkles around the mouth, and more. EZ Gel is obtained from the patient’s own plasma and is used as a dermal filler. Unlike traditional fillers, it is made from 100 percent your own blood—with no additives! The procedure involves injecting the gel into the area of concern, which stimulates new collagen production and helps to plump and smooth the skin, leading to a more rejuvenated appearance. EZ Gel can be used alone or in combination with wrinkle relaxers, lasers or hyaluronic acid fillers to achieve the desired aesthetic outcome. The EZ Gel treatment is done by performing a blood draw, then centrifuging the blood sample with a double spin technique, which separates out the Platelet-Rich Fibrin and Albumin, a protein from the patient’s blood. These two solutions are combined to form a gel that is then injected, which provides volumization and stimulates collagen production. There are no additives in the blood collection tubes for this procedure, meaning the gel product is entirely made up of the patient’s own blood components. This makes it a safe and natural treatment! Growth factors are released after injection, leading to increased production of collagen, elastin and new skin cells. Depending on the patient’s age and treatment goals, multiple treatments may be necessary. Results last several months, however, additional treatments may be necessary to maintain desired results. If you are interested in using this all-natural method for facial rejuvenation, a consultation is recommended to create a treatment plan to address your unique aesthetic goals. Gig Harbor Aesthetics is excited to offer PRF EZ Gel as an option for those seeking an all-natural and safe approach to facial rejuvenation!

Want to Succeed at a New Goal or Habit? Ta k e t i m e t o p l a y ! b y J E N N I F E R ‘ TA Z ’ VA ZQ U E Z

A

re you feeling anxious about a new habit or goal you would like to set? Want to feel excited as you step out of your comfort zone and begin creating, doing and/or being what you want? Get curious and ask yourself when was the last time you played? Have you ever watched kids play? Their imagination, laughter, smiles and openness to trying something new is so magical and infectious! Research shows play is a fundamental way children learn, explore feelings, develop focus and self-discipline. Play creates a safe space encouraging action and overcoming fear, enabling openness to missteps, growth and developing confidence. Unfortunately, adults too often consider play to be self-indulgent or only for kids. We end up stuck in our comfort zones out of fear. To build resilience, confidence, reach new goals, change habits, learn something new and be open to different ideas and opportunities, we need to experience a healthy degree of anxiety/fear— then challenge ourselves by taking action outside our comfort zone. Play can help! Games are an effective way to learn; simulating adventure and keeping our brains engaged. The most successful games are design-based games that help us create. University of California, Irvine, professor Kurt Squire uses a game-based learning model with his students: Play, Explore, Study, Build.

Play. When you’re feeling anxious or fearful, approach it in a playful way. This could involve playing a game, gamifying a task, or simply using your imagination to generate curiosity and creativity. Explore/Study. Apply the gaming skills (or resulting creatively after any game) to what you want to do. Take some time to develop the knowledge and skills you need. Be curious as you explore, research, ask questions, learn how to do something and/or break things down into smaller parts. Build. Take action and build something that will help you toward your new habit or goal. This could involve creating a product, starting a blog, or simply developing a new routine. Have fun with the process of tinkering and learning. If it doesn’t work out, tinker, and try again. When something does work out, celebrate it. You’ll want to do more of it. If you want to increase your chances of success, step out of your comfort zone, and ask yourself how you can approach your habit or goal with more play? You’ll feel happier, healthier, less stressed, and be more productive with increased energy. Start flourishing and enjoy the process.

Radiate confidence on your big day with these pre-wedding beauty treatments 76

GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL january/february 2024

by ELIZABETH RAY

I

t’s the day you’ve dreamt of since childhood, and you want everything to be perfect, from the venue and décor to your dress and, of course, your appearance. While your natural beauty is already stunning, there’s no harm in giving it a little boost with some pre-wedding aesthetic treatments. These treatments can help you look and feel your best, radiating confidence as you walk down the aisle. There are a variety of aesthetic treatments that will have you prepped and pretty for your special day. Skin Rejuvenation: The Foundation of Bridal Beauty Healthy, glowing skin is the canvas upon which all other wedding day beauty enhancements are built. To achieve that coveted bridal glow, consider treatments such as facials, chemical peels and microdermabrasion. Regular facials in the months leading up to your wedding can work wonders. They cleanse, exfoliate and hydrate your skin, leaving it looking refreshed and radiant. For a deeper skin renewal, chemical peels are an option, as they remove the outer layer of skin, reducing fine lines and wrinkles, and uneven pigmentation. Opt for a gentle peel to avoid excessive downtime. If you’re seeking a quick rejuvenation, microdermabrasion, a noninvasive procedure that exfoliates the skin, can improve its texture and tone. january/february 2024 GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL

Botox and Dermal Fillers: A Youthful Boost If you’re looking to smooth out wrinkles and add volume to certain areas of your face, Botox and dermal fillers can be your best friends. These non-surgical treatments can help you achieve a youthful, refreshed appearance without the need for invasive surgery. Consider them for forehead lines and crow’s feet, where Botox injections can soften these lines, giving you a more youthful and relaxed look. Dermal fillers, on the other hand, can plump up your lips for that perfect pout. They can also enhance your cheekbones, giving your face a more defined, sculpted appearance. The results are natural looking and can last for several months, making them ideal for pre-wedding preparations. Body Sculpting: Achieve Your Dream Silhouette A wedding gown can accentuate your figure, but a little extra help in the form of body sculpting can ensure you feel confident and beautiful on your big day. Non-surgical fat reduction treatments like CoolSculpting and SculpSure can target stubborn areas of fat, helping you achieve your dream silhouette. These procedures are safe and effective, and they require minimal downtime. Whether you’re looking to slim down your waistline, thighs or arms, these treatments can be customized to address your specific concerns. It’s essential to consult with a qualified practitioner to determine the best approach for your needs. Teeth Whitening: Your Smile, Your Confidence

78

Your smile is one of your most powerful assets on your wedding day. It’s the expression of your happiness and love, and it deserves to shine as brightly as possible. Consider professional teeth whitening treatments to ensure your smile is as radiant as can be. While over-the-counter whitening products are available, professional treatments performed by a dentist can deliver quicker and more dramatic results. Teeth whitening can lift years of stains and discoloration, leaving you with a dazzling smile that will light up your wedding photos. Start this process well in advance to ensure your teeth are at their brightest on the big day. GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL january/february 2024

Hair Transformations: Locks that Dazzle Your hair is your crowning glory, and it deserves special attention as you prepare for your wedding. Schedule a consultation with a skilled hairstylist who can recommend treatments and styles that will complement your overall look. Consider hair extensions if you want to add length or volume for a more dramatic hairstyle. These extensions can be seamlessly integrated into your natural hair for a stunning effect. If you’re dealing with frizz or unruly hair, a professional keratin treatment can work wonders, leaving your locks smooth and manageable. Lastly, don’t forget to book a trial session for your wedding hairstyle to ensure it’s exactly what you envisioned. Nail Care: Polished to Perfection While your hands and nails might not be the first thing people notice, they’ll still be on display during the ring exchange and countless photos. Make sure your nails are polished to perfection with regular manicures in the weeks leading up to your wedding. Consider classic neutral shades that complement your overall bridal look. If you want a touch of glamor, opt for a subtle shimmer or glitter accent. Gel manicures can provide long-lasting results, ensuring your nails look flawless throughout the festivities.

Mind and Body Wellness: Inner Beauty Shines Through Beauty treatments aren’t just about external transformation; they should also focus on your well-being. In the hectic months leading up to your wedding, it’s crucial to take time for self-care and relaxation. Consider incorporating mindfulness practices like meditation and yoga into your routine to reduce stress and boost your inner radiance. Additionally, a healthy diet and regular exercise can enhance your physical and mental well-being, contributing to a more vibrant, confident you on your wedding day. As you embark on this exciting journey, remember that the ultimate goal of pre-wedding aesthetic treatments is to enhance your natural beauty and ensure you radiate confidence as you walk down the aisle. 80

Radiate Bridal Beauty Essential tips for your picture-perfect wedding day look by Patrice Allen

Y

82 82

our wedding day is the culmination of a beautiful journey, and looking and feeling your absolute best is every bride’s dream. Bridal beauty isn’t just about makeup and hairstyles; it’s about exuding confidence, health and joy as you step into this new chapter of your life. To help you achieve that perfect bridal glow on your big day, here are essential beauty tips tailored for the moments leading up to your “I do.”

GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL january/february 2024

TIP 1 Glowing Skin

In the days leading up to your wedding, focus on maintaining healthy, radiant skin. Ensure your skin-care routine is gentle yet effective. On the actual wedding day, the secret to an enduring bridal glow lies in the choice of makeup products. Start by applying a high-quality, hydrating primer before your makeup. This not only locks in moisture but also creates a smooth canvas for your makeup artist to work with. A long-lasting primer helps your makeup stay fresh and flawless throughout the day, ensuring that you look stunning from the first moment to the last dance.

TIP 2 Hydration

On your wedding day, prioritizing hydration is an absolute must for a radiant appearance. Adequate hydration plays a pivotal role in reducing puffiness and maintaining the fresh, youthful glow you desire. Make a conscious effort to sip water consistently throughout the day, opting for small, frequent sips to ensure your body remains well-hydrated. Additionally, consider limiting your consumption of alcohol and caffeine, as these beverages can lead to dehydration. You’ll not only look more vibrant but also feel energized and ready to fully enjoy every moment of your special day.

TIP 3 Hair Perfection In the precious hours leading up to your wedding, treat your hair to a luxurious salon treatment to enhance its natural shine and vitality. Collaborate closely with your stylist to ensure your chosen hairstyle perfectly complements your wedding dress, taking into account your face shape and personal preferences. This meticulous attention to detail guarantees that your hair is a stunning accessory that frames your face and completes your overall bridal look, leaving you feeling confident and radiant.

TIP 4 Picture-Perfect Makeup Prior to your wedding day, schedule a makeup trial with a skilled artist, experimenting with different looks to find the one that enhances your features and aligns with your wedding theme. On the day of, be sure to allow plenty of time for your makeup artist to create your pictureperfect look, prioritizing high-quality, long-lasting makeup products to guarantee a stunning appearance that shines in photos and remains flawless throughout your special day.

A World Where Kids Write the

CODE NINJAS COMING TO GIG HARBOR

by JILLIAN CHANDLER

L

ike many parents during the pandemic, Karl Henderson found himself spending more time with his own children, who were 7 and 5 years old at the time. “The teachers at Gig Harbor Academy were awesome in setting up remote learning, but I still found myself taking a lot of time during the workday trying to help my kids navigate their devices, join video calls and submit their assignments,” he recalls. “I realized that even as a parent working in the tech industry, juggling work and life in the pandemic, I still felt a little clueless on how to keep my kids not only engaged and learning how to use their devices, but also how to stay engaged in healthy ways and not just watch videos all day.” While his wife continued her work as a doctor in the Emergency Department at Good Samaritan Hospital, Karl knew his family was blessed to be able to have one parent at home with the kids—though the couple knew not everyone was as fortunate. “Other families didn’t have someone to troubleshoot a Zoom or Teams call for their kids, and many kids were being left for hours to their own devices, which many times resulted in them just consuming social media instead of doing their schoolwork,” notes Karl. After discussing this with other friends and coworkers in the tech space, as well as family members in the education field, Karl saw an

86

GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL january/february 2024

opportunity to tackle these different issues. “We thought, ‘How can we introduce kids to coding at an earlier age to help them become more capable with the technology we use today?’ ‘How can we teach them to become producers of tech and online content rather than only consumers of social media?’” he reflects. From initial conversations, franchise discovery, back and forth with corporate lawyers, and a prolonged permitting process with the City of Gig Harbor, Karl and his team are nearly two years into the process of bringing Code Ninjas—which is quickly becoming synonymous with kids’ after-school science and technology programs—to the local community. “Many of the families we've spoken with know the brand and are excited to have us open this exciting space in the community,” Karl adds. Providing an ever-evolving program that aligns with school standards, computer science topics will be covered in an extremely fun and engaging way to keep kids coming back. “Our goal is for each kid who comes to our dojo to walk out being able to create something unique rather than just consuming content on the internet. We want kids to have fun every time they come to our dojo, make friends, let their creativity run wild, and look forward to their next session with us,” Karl says.

With over 20 different programs, they aim to help every kid who walks through the doors the opportunity to open themselves up, learn how to think outside the box, and find ways to excel in the expression of their creativity. And with a community of more than 400 locations in three countries, ninjas will also get to interact with kids from all over to challenge their skills. Their “senseis” are young and engaged, with backgrounds in sports and education, and are ready to work one on one. Offering more than programming, kids will be introduced to game making, robotics, 3D printing, drones and more exciting things while learning at their own pace. “Our director, Curt Carroll, is a dear friend and neighbor, and he has a long history here in the Harbor coaching soccer and basketball on the club and school level, and he has great relationships with many of the teachers, coaches, older kids and young adults who are joining us as senseis to help teach the younger kids. Our assistant director, Laura Stockton, has a wonderful relationship with my own kids and has years of experience working with kids who just gravitate toward her.” The exceptional educators at Code Ninjas have implemented a new platform called IMPACT, which is its proprietary learning platform designed, in partnership with Microsoft, to give “ninjas” the best learning environment possible. “IMPACT will start our younger ninjas off with white and yellow belts, where they will learn coding concepts and begin developing their own games through low-to-no reading, easy-to-use blockbased coding,” Karl explains. “Ninjas can then move up the belts from orange to blue, where they will start coding in JavaScript. Ninjas going through the purple to black belts will be using professional video game building platforms like Unity, where they will develop their own video game. In addition, they have approximately 28 different camps—with different levels from introductory to more advanced challenges—that will be offered throughout the year, especially during winter and summer breaks. Some of these camps include LEGO robotics, web development, composing music with code, animation, and becoming a Youtuber. “Today’s tech space is for everyone, regardless of where you come from, or what you look like, and our team is excited at the opportunity to hopefully help open some doors for the next generation” Karl smiles. Keep an eye out for Code Ninjas, a “World Where Kids Write the Code,” opening soon right here in Gig Harbor.

The Eritage Resort is nestled in a bucolic 300-acre setting of vineyards and wheat fields surrounding the lovely Lake Sienna. It is the epitome of luxury with unparalleled service and opulent amenities. For the ultimate in privacy and romance, book a bungalow suite, where the floor-to-ceiling windows open up to sweeping views of the lake and vineyards. L’Occitane bath products add a spa experience to your daily rituals. At least one of your meals during your visit should be at the on-

site restaurant, where Executive Chef Arturo Tello Jr. utilizes open-fire cooking techniques with locally sourced ingredients. Inspired by his mother’s cooking and his Latin heritage, he crafts some pretty incredible meals. Plan to spend some time at the resort to enjoy the outdoor saltwater swimming pool, or take out one of the cruisers or mountain bikes to explore the vineyards and resort property. An early morning paddle board as the sun rises is a perfect way to start the day. Eritage wines are available exclusively on-site, so add a tasting to your itinerary. For special occasions, add a romance package, which includes a dozen red roses, a bottle of sparkling wine and artisan chocolate arranged in your room prior to arrival.

Many wineries have great restaurants to try, and downtown has an eclectic dining scene. There is such a variety of places to dine in the Walla Walla area. Many wineries have great restaurants to try, and downtown has an eclectic dining scene. Brasserie Four is a classic French-style country restaurant with simple food that is so satisfying. Make sure to try the PommesFrites with mayo. It is hard to believe French fries can taste so good. The Vichyssoise, a potato leek soup, is a showstopper—especially when sopped up with a slice of baguette and paired with a good glass of white wine. Each day there are daily specials that highlight fresh local ingredients such as the recent heirloom tomato salad. The Waterbrook Winery and Tasting Room is outside of town and makes a good spot for lunch and touring the other wineries in the area. Chef Sarah Perry works her magic incorporating farm fresh produce from the on-site garden and local farms into her cuisine. Try the Chef ’s Board and other shareables with a flight of wine that allows guests to experience different flavor profiles. The menu also offers a flight of house-made sauces, which is a nice addition to any of the sides.

what to

Insider Tip: In the alley behind the showroom is a speakeasy culinary shop. Look for the door, as there is no sign for Foodscape, which offers fresh local produce, seafood, cheese, charcuterie and gourmet groceries. For those seeking outdoor adventure, head out to Ski Bluewood, a popular ski and snowboard resort about an hour from Walla Walla that has undergone recent updates. Waitsburg and Dayton are two darling small towns worth a visit. Take a stroll through Pioneer Park, the oldest in town established in 1902. Walking paths will take you past large shade trees and beautiful ponds, in-season flower gardens and an outdoor aviary. Nothing says romance like sparkling wine. Winemaker George-Anne Robertson leads the sparkling wine program at the Yellowhawk Resort and Sparkling House. This 84-acre hilltop retreat is just gorgeous. Keep an eye out for the namesake hawks as you drive onto this pastoral property. For a fun activity, book an “Experience the Art of Sparkling Wine Disgorgement and Dosage.” This hands-on experience will have guests learn about creating sparkling wine and then have the opportunity to disgorge their own bottle of sparkling wine. Super fun activity!

Simple and Healthy Baked Eggs in Avocado Ingredients: • 2 ripe avocados • 4 large eggs • Salt and pepper, to taste • Optional toppings (such as chopped fresh herbs, diced tomatoes or grated cheese)

Method: • Preheat your oven to 375°F. • Cut the avocados in half lengthwise and remove the pits. If necessary, you can slice a small piece off the bottom of each avocado half to make them stable and prevent them from tipping over in the oven. Use a spoon to scoop out some of the flesh from each avocado half, leaving enough room for an egg to fit comfortably. Sprinkle a pinch of salt and pepper over each avocado half. You can also add any other seasonings you like, such as paprika or garlic powder. • Carefully crack one egg into each avocado half, placing it in the hollow you created. If you're concerned about the egg whites spilling over, you can crack the eggs into a small bowl first and then pour them into the avocado halves. Season the eggs with a bit more salt and pepper, to taste. • Place the filled avocado halves on a baking sheet or in a baking dish. Bake in the preheated oven for about 15 to 20 minutes, or until the egg whites are set and the yolks are cooked to your liking. Keep in mind that the yolks will continue to cook slightly after you remove them from the oven, so take them out just before your preferred level of doneness. Let cool for a minute or two before serving. • Sprinkle your choice of toppings over the baked eggs and avocados. Chopped fresh herbs, diced tomatoes and grated cheese are popular options. • These baked eggs in avocado make for a delicious and nutritious breakfast or brunch. You can customize them with various toppings and seasonings to suit your taste preferences. 104

Warm up with a bowl of soup at this inspiring event to help combat hunger by JILLIAN CHANDLER

2

024 marks the ninth year of Empty Bowls, a community event in which Altrusa Gig Harbor partners not only with area artisans and restaurants but is fortunate to work with Kiwanis Club and Rotary Club of Gig Harbor as well to raise funds to fight hunger in our community. This year’s event takes place from 11am to 2pm on March 2 at Chapel Hill Church. The concept of Empty Bowls is straightforward and humbling: Purchase a handmade bowl and enjoy a simple meal of soup and bread, then take your bowl home as a reminder of the empty bowls in our community. “Our mission is to improve our community through leadership and service, which explains why Empty Bowls is such an important and positive part of what we do,” affirms Nancy Hohenstein, Altrusa president. More than 50 local potters contribute their time and talent yearround to supply the beautiful bowls, and Nancy is hopeful to have up to 1,000 bowls this year. She adds that Bayside Animal Lodge has donated over 100 pet bowls to be sold along with the “people” bowls this year. To fill these bowls, Nancy anticipates a variety of soups from at least 10 local restaurants. (Those who would like to donate a bowl (or bowls), or restaurants who would like to provide a soup, Nancy asks that you contact

Altrusa through their website, AltrusaGigHarbor.org, or email her directly at altrusapresidentgigharbor@gmail.com.) Last year’s event saw close to 500 people turn out to show their support, and Nancy says they are preparing to surpass last year’s numbers. She encourages the public to attend, noting the opportunity for them to purchase a specially crafted bowl— primarily pottery, though there are often wood and glass creations—from one of Gig Harbor’s talented artisans, paired with the chance to enjoy savory soups created, donated and served by our generous local restaurants. The cost to attend is the price of purchasing a bowl, with bowls starting at $10 each and increasing from there. The purchase of a bowl includes up to two servings of soup along with fresh bread and water; “a simple meal of soup and bread to remind us of how fortunate we are and how some right here in our community are not,” Nancy reflects. Last year, Altrusa Foundation granted nearly $30,000 to six organizations—FISH Food Bank, Food Backpacks 4 Kids, The Red Barn, The Boys & Girls Club, Key Peninsula Community Services, and Harbor Hope—with all funds designated for hunger relief.
