lanning a wedding is an exhilarating journey filled with endless decisions, from selecting the perfect venue to choosing the color scheme and floral arrangements. Among these decisions, the rehearsal dinner often stands out as a heartfelt and intimate gathering that sets the tone for the big day. Hosting a rehearsal wedding dinner at home can be a charming and cost-effective option, offering a warm and personal touch to the celebration. From the guest list to menu, seating and entertainment, it’s time to create a memorable rehearsal dinner that you and your guests will cherish for years to come. Invitations and Guest List. The first step in hosting a successful rehearsal wedding dinner at home is to create a guest list and send out invitations. Typically, the guest list includes close family members, bridal party members, and a few close friends. Sending invitations well in advance will ensure that your guests have enough time to RSVP and mark their calendars. You can choose to send physical invitations, digital invites, or even a phone call, depending on your preference and budget. Décor and Theme. Set the tone for your rehearsal dinner with a carefully chosen theme and décor. Whether it’s a casual backyard barbecue or an elegant sit-down affair, the décor should reflect your personal style and the ambiance you want to create. Consider table centerpieces, linens, candles and flowers that harmonize with your theme and color palette. Utilize your home’s existing charm and features to enhance the overall atmosphere. Menu Selection. The menu is a critical component of any rehearsal dinner. You can choose to cook the meal yourself, enlist the help of family and friends, or hire a caterer for a stress-free experience. Ensure that your menu caters to the dietary preferences and restrictions of your guests. Incorporate a mix of appetizers, main courses, sides and desserts to provide a variety of options.

Determine the seating arrangement to ensure that your guests are comfortable and able to

interact with one another. Beverage Options. Selecting the right beverages is essential to complement your menu. Offering a range of options is a good practice. Include non-alcoholic choices like sparkling water, fruit juices and soft drinks, as well as alcoholic options such as wine, beer and a signature cocktail. Make sure to have a designated area for a bar or beverage station where guests can help themselves or be served by a bartender if you have one. Seating and Layout. Determine the seating arrangement to ensure that your guests are comfortable and able to interact with one another. Consider the layout of your home and how you can optimize the space for dining. If the weather permits, an outdoor setup can be a beautiful option. Use tables, chairs and linens that match your theme and create an inviting atmosphere. Entertainment. Entertainment can take various forms depending on the atmosphere you wish to create. Background music is a must, whether it’s a playlist of your favorite songs or a live acoustic 14

BONNERS FERRY LIVING LOCAL january/february 2024

performance. Additionally, you could incorporate games, a photo booth, or even a short video montage celebrating your journey as a couple. These elements can help break the ice and keep your guests engaged throughout the evening. Personal Touches. One of the advantages of hosting a rehearsal dinner at home is the opportunity to infuse personal touches into the event. Display photos of the couple throughout their relationship, create a memory wall, or set up a slideshow showcasing cherished moments. These details add sentimental value to the celebration and help tell your unique love story. Lighting and Ambiance. The right lighting can transform your home into a magical setting for the rehearsal dinner. Consider string lights, lanterns, candles and fairy lights to create a warm and inviting ambiance. Soft, dimmed lighting can enhance the overall mood and create a cozy atmosphere that encourages conversation and connection among your guests.

Rentals and Equipment. Depending on the size of your guest list and the space available, you may need to rent additional equipment such as tables, chairs, dinnerware and glassware. It’s crucial to plan for these rentals well in advance to ensure availability and to avoid any last-minute surprises. Weather Contingency. If you plan to host your rehearsal wedding dinner outdoors, it’s essential to have a weather contingency plan. Renting a tent or marquee can provide shelter in case of rain or extreme heat. This ensures that your event can proceed as planned, regardless of the weather conditions. Capture the Memories. Finally, don’t forget to capture the special moments of your rehearsal wedding dinner. Hire a photographer or designate a friend or family member to take photographs throughout the evening. These pictures will serve as precious keepsakes, preserving the memories of this intimate gathering with loved ones. Hosting a rehearsal wedding dinner at home can be a heartfelt and memorable experience that brings your nearest and dearest together in a warm and intimate setting. With personal touches and attention to detail, this evening is sure to be a cherished memory for you and your guests for years to come.

teacher in the spotlight b y C H R I ST I A N W E A N E R

JACOB GARRISON, SCIENCE Boundary County Middle School

J

acob Garrison never intended to be a teacher. Despite coming from a long line of educators—most notably his grandparents, Keith and Gladyce Coble, who were stalwarts in the Boundary County School District (BCSD) for many years—Jacob did not have the desire to follow in his family members’ footsteps.

While earning his teaching credentials, Jacob worked as a substitute teacher and ultimately became a full-time science teacher at the middle school level. He also helped to found Boundary County Middle School’s robotics program and continues to lead talented teams of students at the state and national competitions each year.

Then, after enlisting in the Navy right out of high school and serving six years, traveling across the United States, pursuing a graphic design degree, switching majors to psychology and working in construction and restaurant management, Jacob finally realized he had some soul-searching to do if he ever wanted to find his “[true] calling.”

“Robotics is more than just a sport, it truly is a teambased community,” Jacob emphasized. “Former members have gone on to jobs in cyber security, A.I. technology development, tactical drone piloting, or are working for engineering firms or places like Ames Space Center.”

“I realized that in every job I have ever had, I inevitably ended up as the trainer,” Jacob remembered. “It dawned on me that I was already a teacher … my grandparents were right.” Jacob explained, “This epiphany was a life changer. I truly felt a calling to this profession, and more specifically, I felt the calling to do it here [in Bonners Ferry]. This is where my roots are, and I want my branches of the family tree to be rooted here too.” Jacob grew up in Boundary County from the time he was 8 years old. His family lived in a remote area off the Moyie River near Eastport without electricity or running water. It was a challenging way of life, but the simplicity of Jacob’s childhood, combined with his fascination for science fiction and technology, instilled a strong imagination within him that still drives him to this day. 18

BONNERS FERRY LIVING LOCAL january/february 2024

Aside from teaching, Jacob loves to spend time outside gardening, hiking, swimming, and enjoying what he considers to be the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets in the world here in Boundary County. Jacob’s indoor hobbies include playing board games and video games with his family, as well as freelance graphic design work, teaching coding to his daughter, and developing gluten-, dairy- and sugar-free meals alongside his wife. Jacob never would have imagined his life coming full circle in the way that it has, but his life experiences and imaginative personality have allowed him to make an impact that goes far beyond the classroom. “If I can help expand a student’s understanding of the world through science, great,” Jacob concluded. “However, if I can help a child see the amazing person that they are inside, that’s powerful.”

TAREN BATEMAN, FRESHMAN

Student-Athlete in the spotlight

by CHRISTIAN WEANER

F

or as long as Taren Bateman can remember, sports have been a huge part of her life. “When I was in elementary school, my mom, Tomi Bateman, started a [basketball] team with a bunch of girls in my grade,” Taren recalled. “We traveled to Post Falls to play games. We even went to some further tournaments, like Lewiston." “I have always been an exceptionally competitive person, and being on that team brought out that side of me,” she continued. “We won games, and we lost games, but one thing that I took away from playing at that age was [that] I wanted to go as far as I could with basketball.” Now, as freshman at Bonners Ferry High School (BFHS), Taren’s athletic gifting and competitive spirit have become evident— not only in basketball, but on the volleyball court (and the track) as well. This past fall, she led the volleyball team in aces and finished second in kills, helping the Badgers reach the 3A State Tournament. “Taren possesses great athleticism, as well as a strong desire to work hard and put in 100 percent at all times,” Bonners Ferry Head Volleyball Coach Cynthia Cummings noted. “As a freshman on the varsity team, there was a huge learning curve from middle school, but she rose to the challenge and was extremely coachable and willing to learn a new offense and defense.”

20

BONNERS FERRY LIVING LOCAL january/february 2024

While Taren is also looking forward to competing as a sprinter and jumper in the spring, her current focus is basketball season. She plays point guard for the Badgers, leading the team as the top scorer and distributor. Taren and her teammates have big goals this winter, as they aim to beat rival Timberlake and earn a state playoff spot for the first time since 2021, but her aspirations are much bigger than wins and losses. “I think my most important personal goal is to bring positive energy and great effort every day, whether it's practice or a game, and to uplift my teammates,” Taren emphasized. As Taren continues to improve as an athlete over the next several years, her ultimate dream is to play Division I basketball for the BYU Cougars. For now, though, she enjoys living in Bonners Ferry and spending time with her extended family. In less than one school year, Taren has already made a big impact on and off the court at BFHS, and one can only imagine how much more she will accomplish. “She is an encouraging teammate and respectful to coaches,” Cynthia described. “She is a force to reckon with and will be exciting to watch in the years to come.”

“The Open Mic that we used to have was the first thing I started attending regularly—before that I think I had only been to a friend’s concert—and through Open Mic, I met some really special friends,” McCallum remembered. “Open Mic made me fall in love with the Pearl Theater. It gave me a space for my voice to be heard.” Since its opening in 2011 as a renovated performing arts space, the Pearl has become a refuge for people like McCallum—now the theater’s program director—who are looking for a creative outlet and supportive community. The 130-year-old building that is now home to the Pearl Theater began as Bonners Ferry’s first Catholic church and was built in 1894. The Catholic church worshiped there for nearly a century until the 1980s, when it became the gathering place for Community Fellowship Church. Having been renovated and expanded on numerous occasions over the years, the property was ultimately put

up for sale in 2010. After being purchased and once again extensively renovated to suit a more theatrical-style venue, the Pearl Theater officially opened its doors on Saturday, October 21, 2011, with the performance of “No Tears for Love” by the late Paul Rawlings. “Several years later, the Pearl Theater nonprofit formed and eventually bought the building,” McCallum recounted. “It is now completely run by the nonprofit and relies entirely upon donations and volunteers.” In the 12-plus years since the Pearl opened, the theater has hosted hundreds of performances of all kinds, as well as classes and private events. McCallum, who began as the program director in September, devotes much of his time to booking acts, planning out the monthly calendar and increasing the theater’s publicity. “My role is essentially being the public face of the organization,” McCallum notes. “It’s a lot of research and emailing. I look for new performers and programs to bring to our town.”

"HAVING A COMMUNITY EVENT CENTER WHERE WE CAN COME TO CELEBRATE THAT AND PLAY TOGETHER IS KIND OF ESSENTIAL

to a healthy existence.” While McCallum works diligently in his position, he knows that the Pearl would not be able to operate without the volunteers who devote their time and resources. “We’re almost completely volunteer run—my position is the only paid one— so we can only do as much as our volunteers give,” McCallum acknowledged. “If we don’t have volunteers to serve food in the café or run lights and sound or clean between events, we can’t host things.” He continued, “There’s maintenance and yard work and more. And it only happens if someone donates their time.” Ultimately, McCallum believes the best motivation—besides getting to spend time with him and the other board members—for people to volunteer is because they can contribute to the arts. “[‘The arts’ is] not some hoity toity culture thing—no one cares about that,” McCallum explained. “Art is better than that: It’s play. It’s how we humans human.” “We’re all creative beings on some level and we like to play,” he continued. “So having a community event center where we can come to celebrate that and play together is kind of essential to a healthy existence.” For McCallum, this mission connects back to his initial experiences at the Pearl, which allowed him to share his talents with others. “The arts can tend to get a little self-important, and that’s not really what we’re about,” McCallum joked. “I’m an artist myself, and I’m a goober.” McCallum has a lot of plans and ideas for how to continue to expand the Pearl and bring in new and exciting shows, events and classes, yet he knows that he cannot make that happen alone. “I want it to continue to grow community involvement and bring more people together,” McCallum described. “I want to bring more programs here that will teach people fun things. I just want to grow what we already have. The more people that come here, the bigger acts we can book.” McCallum noted that a few exciting upcoming events include Libby’s Mango Joe—featuring an African drum show—on February 3, a basket weaving class on February 17, comedy and piano from Sean Bostrom on February 24, and the Pearl’s new dance class’ student performance on June 28 and 29. ony Fleck, owner and operator of Two Tones Café, has gained ample leadership and culinary skills through 35-plus years of work experience at numerous restaurants and corporations— ranging from Disneyland and Boeing to Outback Steakhouse and The Cheesecake Factory. But the expertise he is leaning on most heavily right now, as he contemplates the future of Two Tones after closing the restaurant’s Bonners Ferry location at the end of 2023, is how to handle adversity.

to school, at the age of 13. After graduating high school, serving three years in the Marine Corps and studying at Washington State University, Tony was recruited to work at Disneyland Resort in Southern California. Since then, his career in restaurant management and food service has taken him across much of the Western United States, ultimately coming full circle in 2018 when he moved back to his hometown and opened Two Tones shortly thereafter.

“When you are in these chaotic, high-pressure situations over long periods of time, you learn how to remain calm during what others might consider catastrophic moments, like closing a restaurant,” Tony explained.

Two Tones—a name that pays homage to a promise Tony made more than 20 years ago to his son, Anthony, that the two would one day open a restaurant together—has always been about family for Tony. Nearly all of Tony’s seven children, as well as his wife and granddaughter, have worked at the restaurant at some point since its launch nearly six years ago.

Tony grew up on Air Force bases across the country but moved to Bonners Ferry, where three generations of his family before him went

The Bonners Ferry location—fit with an inviting indoor space and a serene outdoor garden area—was perfect in all ways except parking,

and that issue was exacerbated by the extended road construction directly in front of the building. So, in March 2023, Tony opened a second Two Tones on the grounds of The Ranch Club golf course in Priest River, hoping to stem the tide. While the second location has done well for itself, Tony ultimately had to make the heartbreaking decision to close in Bonners Ferry—at least for now. But Tony is persistent, and he has big plans and ideas for the future. He prides himself on his versatility as a chef, and that wide-ranging diversity of global cuisines has always been a staple of the Two Tones menu. “I am the Forest Gump of food service,” Tony joked. “I can make chicken and biscuits or a seven-course meal, and I think that’s what gives me an advantage to some people in the business who might just have one unique thing.” Moving forward, Tony will be focusing on the Priest River location while also launching a new catering venture alongside two business partners from North Spokane. The new catering company, which will specialize in weddings and gatherings, as well as private chef events, is something Tony hopes will generate the financial resources he needs to eventually begin anew in his beloved hometown. “The success of this catering business is what is going to fuel getting re-opened back in Bonners Ferry,” Tony emphasized. Ultimately, regardless of what the future holds for Tony and his food service career, Two Tones Café is, and always will be, so much more than just a business to him—it’s a family. “Opening Two Tones Café was a dream come true,” Tony reflected. “It wasn’t what I expected. The rewards were greater and the challenges bigger than I ever expected.” 28 BONNERS FERRY LIVING LOCAL january/february 2024

Caring for the Bonners Ferry Community Cornerstone Urgent Care & Family Medicine by JILLIAN CHANDLER

usband and wife team Dr. Ryan and Kaite Gorman celebrated the grand opening of Cornerstone Urgent Care & Family Medicine on November 13, 2023. The couple was inspired to bring medicine back to what it was meant to be—a relationship between a provider and patient—and that is what they strive for each and every day at Cornerstone. “I am able to interact with each of my patients in a way that is not altered by a third party, such as insurance or the government,” Dr. Gorman affirms. “I’m not sure people realize just how involved those parties are in dictating the care given to patients.” Dr. Gorman received his doctoral degree from Frontier Nursing University and is dual boarded as a family and emergency nurse

practitioner. A New Mexico native, he began his medical career in EMS and is a nationally registered paramedic. He spent several years as a trauma RN in the only Level I Trauma Center in New Mexico before becoming a nurse practitioner and working in several trauma emergency departments. Also a New Mexico native, Kaite received her master’s in business administration from Eastern New Mexico University. Together they have three young children. The couple and their family relocated to Bonners Ferry in 2019, as they were looking for a peaceful and family friendly place for their children to grow up. Add in Ryan’s passion for rural medicine—his master’s program was a rural medicine program—and Bonners Ferry was exactly what they were looking for.

At Cornerstone Urgent Care & Family Medicine, the couple looks forward to having the opportunity to partner with people on a more personal level and address their health care needs in a comprehensive way. “We truly mean it when we say we want to come alongside our patients in their lives and help them,” shares Kaite, who now splits her time as a real estate and directing the clinical operations of Cornerstone. As Dr. Gorman adds, “Our goal is to be a one-stop-shop for our patients. We are trying to have them be able to have as much done in-house as possible, so they aren’t driving around town to various places and waiting hours for results.” Their focus is caring for a wide range of illnesses and injuries that need to be dealt with immediately but are not life-threatening. Simply stated, they are a place to go for things such as bumps and bruises to lacerations and common illnesses. “If you think you’re having a heart attack, that’s an ER visit. But, if you need stitches, a cast, you slipped on the ice and are worried you broke your wrist, we are fully equipped to handle all of those situations,” affirms Kaite. And though they are not an emergency department, they have an X-ray machine available on-site, with X-rays then read by an independent radiologist. They can also take X-ray orders from any provider in town, whether you are a long-term patient of theirs or not, with results forwarded to their ordering provider—and it’s all done at a fraction of the cost of a traditional hospital system, thanks to their cash model payment plan. “The benefit of a cash model is that it frees up my attention to focus on the patient. I am not spending effort on fighting with the insurance companies about coding, reimbursement, or filling out the latest forms that their corporate managers are requesting,” Dr. Gorman emphasizes. Patients will never receive a surprise bill, as they pay at the time of their visit. There is complete transparency in the cost of services, as all of their prices are available ahead of time, so patients know exactly what their visit is going to cost them.

Though they’ve just recently opened their doors to the community, the couple is already seeing the benefits of Cornerstone Urgent Care & Family Medicine and feel rewarded on a daily basis. “Urgent Care is a beautiful blend of being able to help people with an immediate need but also still be involved in their day-to-day lives. This is why we decided to be both an urgent care and family medicine facility,” Kaite smiles. They welcome you to visit their website for their current hours and for additional information regarding appointments. For those looking for not just a medical provider, but someone they can build a trusting relationship, and friendship, with, look no further than Cornerstone Urgent Care & Family Medicine. january/february 2024 BONNERS FERRY LIVING LOCAL

honeymoon is a cherished rite of passage for newlyweds; a time to revel in the joy of marriage and create unforgettable memories together. It's a journey that marks the beginning of a lifelong adventure. To ensure your honeymoon is nothing short of perfect, careful planning and selecting the ideal destination are paramount. It’s time to create a honeymoon that dreams are made of. Planning your honeymoon should ideally begin well before your wedding day. By giving yourself ample time, you can avoid the stress that often accompanies last-minute preparations. Determine your budget for the honeymoon. Knowing your financial limits will help you narrow down your options and plan accordingly. Decide when you want to go on your honeymoon. Some couples choose to depart immediately after the wedding, while others opt for a delayed honeymoon. Your choice will impact the destinations available to you. Make a list of what you both want from the honeymoon. Is it relaxation on a pristine beach, cultural exploration, adventure, or a combination of these? Prioritizing your desires will help you choose a destination that caters to your interests. Your honeymoon budget is a crucial aspect of planning, as it will dictate the scope of your trip. Allocate funds by dividing your budget into categories like transportation, accommodation, activities, meals, and miscellaneous expenses. This will help you keep track of your spending. All-inclusive resorts and packages can be costeffective, as they often cover accommodations,

meals and activities in one upfront price. If you’re concerned about the cost, consider setting up a honeymoon fund where guests can contribute instead of traditional wedding gifts. Monitor currency exchange rates if you’re traveling internationally, keep an eye on currency exchange rates, and consider exchanging money in advance to get the best rates. Once you've outlined your preferences and constraints, it's time to seek inspiration for your dream honeymoon. Consult travel magazines and websites, such as TripAdvisor, Travel + Leisure, and Lonely Planet, which often feature honeymoon destinations, providing valuable insights and ideas. Reach out to friends and family who have been on memorable honeymoons. They can offer personal recommendations and tips based on their experiences. If you prefer a stressfree planning process, consider enlisting the help of a travel agent. They can suggest destinations, handle bookings, and even create personalized itineraries.

BONNERS FERRY LIVING LOCAL january/february 2024

Choosing the perfect honeymoon destination is a pivotal step in the planning process. Several factors should influence your decision. Consider your shared interests and hobbies. Are you both beach lovers, adventure seekers, history buffs, or foodies? Select a destination that aligns with your passions. Research the climate and seasons of potential destinations, and be sure to choose a time of year that suits your preferences, whether it's a tropical escape, a winter wonderland, or a springtime adventure. Keep an eye on any travel restrictions, visa requirements, or health and safety concerns related to your chosen destination, and stay informed about the latest updates and regulations. The best honeymoons are tailored to the couple's unique tastes and preferences. To customize your trip for a truly memorable experience, be sure to select your accommodations wisely. Whether you opt for a luxury resort, a charming boutique hotel or a cozy Airbnb, choose accommodations that reflect your style and comfort level.

You can embark on a journey that not only celebrates your love but also sets the stage for a lifelong adventure together.

Consider surprise activities or romantic gestures during your trip. This could be a couple’s spa day, a private sunset dinner on the beach or a hot air balloon ride at sunrise. Plan a loose itinerary that includes must-see attractions and activities but also leaves room for spontaneity. The balance between structure and flexibility is key. Invest in a good camera or hire a professional photographer to capture the special moments of your honeymoon. These photos will be cherished mementos for years to come. As your honeymoon approaches, pay careful consideration when packing, especially if you're traveling to a destination with specific weather conditions or cultural norms. Check the weather and pack accordingly, including appropriate clothing for different activities and temperatures. Mix and match clothing items to create multiple outfits. Ensure you have all necessary travel documents, including passports, visas and travel insurance. Make copies of these documents in case of loss or theft. And don't forget to pack essentials like medication, toiletries, chargers and travel adapters. Try to pack efficiently to avoid excess baggage fees and the hassle of carrying heavy bags. A honeymoon is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and planning it meticulously is key to creating lasting memories. With careful planning and a thoughtful approach, you can embark on a journey that not only celebrates your love but also sets the stage for a lifelong adventure together. So, start early, seek inspiration, and create a honeymoon that reflects your unique love story.

Say ‘I do’ at Jantz Barn

N

estled in beautiful Bonners Ferry, amongst vast fields, with mountains as your backdrop, you will find Jantz Barn. Owned by Tim and Tina Jantz on their expansive property, the barn has been transformed from a place to store hay to a beautiful location to host that perfect event. “In 2018, I was engaged and looking for a place to get married,” shares Moriah Sieverkropp, daughter of Tim and Tina. “I found nothing that felt right for my husband-to-be Karl and myself. At the same time, my best friend also got engaged and was finding the same thing.” Two weddings, no location, and that would be the inspiration behind transforming Jantz Barn into an event venue! “This was my dad’s hay barn and was never a plan to be a wedding location. But, with a fast wedding, my best friend was the first to get married there in October of 2018 (we still had hay in the barn),” Moriah shares. “The spring of 2019, and a lot of work later, I was married there, and the calls started coming in.” Today, Moriah manages Jantz Barn with the help of owners Tim and Tina. With a background as manager for Hallmark and planning Hallmark events for all the holidays, it was the perfect opportunity for her to put her experience to work in a larger capacity. This “rustic barn with antique flare” provides that neighbor-nextdoor feel, offers an open canvas, and allows couples to decorate the space according to their taste, style and budget—with a lot of room to

personalize the space to their wedding wants. It truly reflects that DIY wedding or event. “It is really up to the couple on how much they want to do with the space,” Moriah smiles. When it comes to what Moriah finds the most rewarding part of her job, it’s having the opportunity to help transform Jantz Barn into the venue of her clients’ dreams. “I love seeing couples’ eyes light up as they arrive at the barn on their wedding day, surrounded by their loved ones, the lights light up, the décor is up, and they take it all in—not believing it’s real!” Moriah invites anyone looking for an event venue to visit Jantz Barn to discover all of the small details that make this barn so unique (think swing set, silo bar, outhouses, and antiques throughout). In addition to weddings, they’ve held anniversary parties, barn dances, graduation parties, and more. For those looking to secure Jantz Barn, Moriah encourages you to call or text 208.290.8257 or message them via Facebook (search “Jantz Barn”). “We book anywhere from two years to one year out,” she says. “But always call for and ask about open dates. We still have many weekends open in summer 2024—though they are beginning to fill up fast!” The wedding of your dreams awaits … at Jantz Barn. s the calendar turns a fresh page and the promise of a new year beckons, it’s the perfect time to embark on a journey of self-improvement. Year after year, many of us set ambitious resolutions, and at the top of the list, more often than not, is a commitment to better health. It’s time to make your health a priority, from setting realistic goals to adopting sustainable habits and seeking professional guidance. It’s a new year and time for a new you! The foundation of any successful health journey begins with setting clear and realistic goals. It’s easy to get carried away with grandiose resolutions like losing 50 pounds in a month or completely eliminating your favorite indulgence. However, such lofty ambitions can often lead to disappointment and frustration. Instead, start by identifying specific, attainable objectives that align with your long-term vision for a healthier you. For instance, if your ultimate goal is to lead a more active lifestyle, consider setting a realistic target like walking for 30 minutes a day or hitting the gym three times a week. These smaller milestones will not only boost your confidence but also make it easier to track your progress. The key to lasting change lies in creating a sustainable routine. It’s tempting to make drastic changes in January, but consistency is what truly counts. Whether it’s adopting a new workout regimen, overhauling your diet, or dedicating time to meditation and selfcare, the key is to make these changes a part of your daily life. Start by incorporating one new habit at a time. This gradual approach makes it easier for your body and mind to adapt, increasing the chances of long-term success. Remember, the new year isn’t just about quick fixes; it’s about building a healthier, more fulfilling life.

Nutrition is a cornerstone of good health, and the new year is an ideal time to reevaluate your eating habits. Instead of fad diets or extreme restrictions, focus on mindful eating. This means paying attention to what you eat, savoring each bite, and making conscious choices. Consider incorporating more whole foods into your diet, such as fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and whole grains. Keep in mind that small changes can yield big results. Swap sugary drinks for water, reduce portion sizes, and limit processed foods. Remember, it’s about progress, not perfection. In the pursuit of physical health, it’s essential not to neglect your mental well-being. Stress, anxiety and burnout can take a toll on your overall health, so make mental wellness a priority this year. Practice stressreduction techniques like meditation, yoga or deep breathing exercises. These practices can help you find balance in your life and cope with the challenges that may arise. Don’t hesitate to seek professional help if you’re struggling with your mental health. A therapist or counselor can provide valuable support and guidance as you navigate life’s ups and downs. Remember, taking care of your mind is just as important as taking care of your body. Exercise is a fundamental component of a healthy lifestyle. Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or new to physical activity, finding a fitness routine that suits your interests and goals is crucial. Start by exploring different activities until you discover something you genuinely enjoy. Setting short-term fitness goals can also help keep you motivated. Consider signing up for a 5k run, a dance class or a weekly hiking group. Having an event or goal to work toward can make exercising more enjoyable and purposeful. Embarking on a health journey is often more successful when you have

a support system in place. Share your goals with friends and family who can offer encouragement and accountability. Consider joining online communities or local groups with similar interests or objectives. Having others to share your challenges and successes with can make the journey more fulfilling. While adopting healthy habits is essential, don’t forget about the importance of regular health checkups. Visiting your health care provider for routine checkups and screenings can catch potential health issues early and ensure you’re on the right track. This proactive approach to your health can be a game-changer in maintaining your well-being. As you work toward your health and wellness goals, don’t forget to celebrate your progress along the way. Each small achievement is a step closer to becoming the best version of yourself. Whether it’s fitting into those jeans you haven’t worn in years, achieving a personal best in the gym, or simply feeling more energetic, take a moment to acknowledge and appreciate your accomplishments. Sometimes, achieving your health goals may require professional guidance. Whether you’re looking to lose weight, manage a chronic condition or develop a personalized fitness plan, consulting with health care professionals can provide valuable insights and support. Consider partnering with a registered dietitian, personal trainer or physical therapist who can tailor their expertise to your specific needs. Life is full of unexpected twists and turns, and your health journey is no exception. There may be setbacks, challenges, and moments when you deviate from your plan. It’s essential to embrace adaptability and resilience during these times. Setbacks are a part of any journey, and what truly matters is your ability to bounce back and stay committed to your health goals. Progress is a process, and each step you take brings you closer to a healthier, happier you.

Sustaining Your Healthy New Year’s

RESOLUTION PRACTICAL TIPS FOR REALISTIC AND LASTING SUCCESS

T

o achieve and sustain a healthy New Year’s resolution, it’s crucial to set realistic and specific goals. Start by identifying a clear objective that aligns with your values and priorities. Whether it’s improving your fitness, eating habits, or reducing stress, break down your goal into smaller, manageable steps. For example, if your resolution is to exercise more, commit to working out three times a week initially, gradually increasing the frequency. Consistency is key. Create a schedule and stick to it, but be flexible enough to adapt when life throws curveballs. Tracking your progress can also provide motivation. Keep a journal or use a tracking app to record your workouts, meals, or other relevant data. Celebrate your milestones, no matter how small, to stay motivated and reinforce positive behaviors. Surround yourself with support. Share your resolution with friends or family who can encourage you and hold you accountable. Consider seeking professional guidance if your goal requires specialized knowledge, such as a registered dietitian or personal trainer. Most importantly, be kind to yourself. Setbacks are a natural part of any journey, so don’t be discouraged by occasional slipups. Learn from them and use them as opportunities for growth. With patience, determination and a realistic approach, you can achieve and maintain your healthy goals throughout the year.

Understanding Heart Disease and Cardiac Stress Tests

H

eart disease is a pervasive and devastating health issue in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it is the leading cause of death for men, women and people of most racial and ethnic groups in the country. The statistics are staggering, with one person dying from cardiovascular disease every 33 seconds, resulting in about 695,000 heart disease-related deaths in 2021. Moreover, heart disease imposes a significant financial burden, costing the U.S. approximately $239.9 billion each year. Coronary heart disease, a common type of heart disease, claimed the lives of 375,476 people in 2021. Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the most prevalent form of heart disease, affecting about 5 percent of adults aged 20 and older. Surprisingly, in 2021, about two in 10 CAD-related deaths occurred in adults younger than 65 years old. This underscores the importance of early awareness and intervention. Recognizing the signs and symptoms of a heart attack is crucial, given that someone in the U.S. experiences a heart attack every 40 seconds. Every year, approximately 805,000 people suffer a heart attack, with 605,000 being their first heart attack and 200,000 occurring in individuals who have already experienced a heart attack. Alarmingly, about one in five heart attacks are "silent," causing damage without the individual realizing it. Cardiac stress tests, also known as exercise stress tests, play a vital role in assessing heart health. This medical procedure evaluates how well a patient's heart functions during physical activity. It involves treadmill walking or stationary bike riding while monitoring heart rate, blood pressure and the electrocardiogram (ECG). The primary aim of a cardiac stress test is to detect any abnormalities or conditions affecting the heart's performance. It aids in diagnosing coronary artery disease, heart rhythm problems and heart valve disease. Furthermore, it assesses the heart's response to stress and exercise, evaluates the presence of blockages in the heart's blood vessels, and determines the effectiveness of treatments for heartrelated conditions.

The battle against heart disease continues; BCH is here to help co u r te s y o f B O U N D A R Y CO M M U N I TY H O S P I TA L

Patients experiencing symptoms like chest pain, shortness of breath or fatigue that could be related to heart issues may be candidates for cardiac stress tests. They are also used to assess the risk of future heart attacks and determine an individual's fitness level for specific activities. While cardiac stress tests are generally safe, there are potential risks to consider. These include: temporary abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias), chest pain or discomfort, blood pressure changes and, in extremely rare circumstances, heart attack or other cardiac events may occur—especially for individuals with existing heart conditions or those at high risk for heart disease. Understanding the prevalence of heart disease in the U.S. and the importance of early intervention is crucial. Cardiac stress tests serve as a valuable diagnostic tool, allowing health care professionals to assess heart health and make informed decisions about treatment and prevention. While there are minimal risks associated with these tests, the benefits far outweigh the potential drawbacks. The battle against heart disease continues, with an emphasis on early detection and intervention. As health care providers and individuals work together to raise awareness and promote heart health, Boundary Community Hospital (BCH) is committed to offering a comprehensive range of cardiology procedures to serve our community. These services include Event Monitors, Holter Monitors (ranging from 24 hours to 14 days), 12 Lead ECG/EKG with Interpretation, and Echocardiograms (both Complete and Limited). These advanced diagnostic tools play a crucial role in the fight against this leading cause of death in the U.S., enabling timely and accurate assessments of heart health and contributing to better patient outcomes. Visit BoundaryCommunityHospital.org/cardiopulmonary or call the Cardiopulmonary phone line at 208.267.3141 ext. 4283 for more information.

The

Rusty Moose

Tavern and Grill A Bonners Ferry favorite celebrates 20 years in 2024 by JILLIAN CHANDLER

T

he Rusty Moose Tavern and Grill will celebrate 20 years in business come this August! And this is all thanks to owners Dan and Jill Nystrom’s commitment to continuing to dish up great food, service and friendship to each customer they serve. Jill worked in customer service before taking the leap to start her own business, inspired to open a restaurant due to her desire for more family time and to create her own success and prosperity. Opened in 2004, this family friendly restaurant offers its guests a Western-themed dining experience in its historic building in downtown Bonners Ferry. The intimate space features 10 tables in the tavern area, plus bar seating for 20. Guests can experience quieter dining in the front, with five tables. And during the warmer months, guests can opt to dine outside. There is also more seating in their adjacent pizzeria, with six large booths and three additional tables. On the menu, choose from burgers (favorites include The Big Dan Burger and Bull Burger) and fresh and delicious salads (like the Salmon Caesar featuring Wild Alaskan Sockeye), the popular Junk Yard Ribs or Beer-Battered Portobello Mushrooms,

48

great steaks including the Whiskey Cream Baseball Cut Sirloin and the Hand-cut Ribeye, pastas like the Creamy Alfredo with Shrimp (all pasta sauces made to order), and so much more! They also serve up amazing pizza thanks to Goat Mountain Pizzeria next door, which the couple also owns and has been serving the community since 2014. They pride themselves in offering all-natural beef from local Woods Meats. Pair your meal with beer, wine or a canned craft cocktail, and top it all off with one of their homemade desserts and ice cream (with eight flavors to choose from!). Oh, and you can’t forget the espresso. When it comes to what the couple believes has made The Rusty Moose a favorite among locals and visitors alike for the past two decades, Jill attributes it to that fact that they “have always served great food, straight forward, just good stuff! From the burger to the buns, steaks and fries, we want it to be the best!” She goes on to share proudly, “We hear it all the time: ‘That was the best meal that we have had on our entire trip across the country.’”

The couple agrees they could not do what they do if it weren’t for the unwavering support they’ve received over the years from family and the local community. And family and community are truly close to Jill’s heart, as she was born and raised in this wonderful place, graduated from Bonners Ferry High School, and her family has called Bonners Ferry home for at least 100 years! The Nystroms are honored to have a business here in town and the service and opportunities they provide to their community. “Being able to help support my family and creating jobs, and hopefully teaching some skills to the young people who work for us, is truly rewarding,” Jill smiles. “And of course, seeing happy people in and out, and making lasting friendships with our customers.” In addition to time spent at The Rusty Moose and Mountain Goat Pizzeria, they find time to be involved in the community and give back. “I was chairman of the Board for the Boundary County Historical Society & Museum for a number of years,” Jill shares. “We still give back by helping sponsor the big fundraising dinner, a Night for the Museum, as the museum is a very important piece of our town.” Dan and Jill invite you to dine with them 11am to 8pm Tuesday and Wednesday, 11am to 8:30pm Thursday and Saturday, and 11am to 9pm Friday; Goat Mountain Pizzeria is open starting at 3pm with the same closing hours.

PIZZA FACTORY

Simple and Healthy Baked Eggs in Avocado Ingredients: • 2 ripe avocados • 4 large eggs • Salt and pepper, to taste • Optional toppings (such as chopped fresh herbs, diced tomatoes or grated cheese)

Method: • Preheat your oven to 375°F. • Cut the avocados in half lengthwise and remove the pits. If necessary, you can slice a small piece off the bottom of each avocado half to make them stable and prevent them from tipping over in the oven. Use a spoon to scoop out some of the flesh from each avocado half, leaving enough room for an egg to fit comfortably. Sprinkle a pinch of salt and pepper over each avocado half. You can also add any other seasonings you like, such as paprika or garlic powder. • Carefully crack one egg into each avocado half, placing it in the hollow you created. If you're concerned about the egg whites spilling over, you can crack the eggs into a small bowl first and then pour them into the avocado halves. Season the eggs with a bit more salt and pepper, to taste. • Place the filled avocado halves on a baking sheet or in a baking dish. Bake in the preheated oven for about 15 to 20 minutes, or until the egg whites are set and the yolks are cooked to your liking. Keep in mind that the yolks will continue to cook slightly after you remove them from the oven, so take them out just before your preferred level of doneness. Let cool for a minute or two before serving. • Sprinkle your choice of toppings over the baked eggs and avocados. Chopped fresh herbs, diced tomatoes and grated cheese are popular options. • These baked eggs in avocado make for a delicious and nutritious breakfast or brunch. You can customize them with various toppings and seasonings to suit your taste preferences. january/february 2024 BONNERS FERRY LIVING LOCAL

ach year, the Festival of Hearts Gala is an incredible opportunity for those in attendance to meet other business owners in the community while supporting a great cause—Boundary Community Hospital’s Fry Healthcare Foundation. In addition, they can also learn about all the updates that have happened at Boundary Community Hospital and Boundary Community Clinics. Just 120 tickets, priced $100 each, will be available and can be purchased through the Fry Healthcare Foundation’s webpage (BoundaryCommunityHospital.org/foundation) and clicking on the “Foundation” tab. The auction will feature 10 high-value auction items as well as a raffle, and of course the fan-favorite Dessert Dash. have a limited number of desserts that they are able to accept. Approved desserts can be delivered to Kootenai River Inn (7169 Plaza Street) the day before or day of the event. For those individuals or businesses interested in being a sponsor, visit BoundaryCommunityHospital.org/foh-sponsor to fill out and submit the sponsorship form. “I love getting to see the community face to face and talk about everything that the Fry Healthcare Foundation has been working so hard on to continuously improve the health care available to Boundary County,” Danielle reflects. $34,000 was raised at the 2023 event, which proceeds went to purchase new defibrillators for the hospital’s Emergency Department. They are aiming to raise $50,000 for the hospital at this year’s gala. As of press time, they had not yet finalized the “Fund an Item” for the 2024 event; keep an eye out at their website for the announcement in the coming days. Danielle concludes, “We are excited to have the biggest Festival of Hearts Gala yet and are eager to see our community!”

Many wineries have great restaurants to try, and downtown has an eclectic dining scene. Brasserie Four is a classic French-style country restaurant with simple food that is so satisfying. Make sure to try the PommesFrites with mayo. It is hard to believe French fries can taste so good. The Vichyssoise, a potato leek soup, is a showstopper—especially when sopped up with a slice of baguette and paired with a good glass of white wine. Each day there are daily specials that highlight fresh local ingredients such as the recent heirloom tomato salad. The Waterbrook Winery and Tasting Room is outside of town and makes a good spot for lunch and touring the other wineries in the area. Chef Sarah Perry works her magic incorporating farm fresh produce from the on-site garden and local farms into her cuisine. Try the Chef ’s Board and other shareables with a flight of wine that allows guests to experience different flavor profiles.
