IN THE SOCIAL MEDIA CULTURE WE LIVE IN, IT’S EASY TO GET CAUGHT UP ON "LIKES" AND VIEWS ON HIGHLY CURATED, SOMETIMES SPONSORED, CONTENT. I find myself thinking, how are these people actually “influencing” in real life when there are no filters, “likes” and edited captions? The women featured in this month's issue may have decent social media followings, but that’s only a side note when looking at what they are actually accomplishing in real life, off-screen. These successful leaders embody boldness, creativity and generosity. Working with all of them on this issue was inspiring to our whole team! In this issue, we highlight women leaders in business, like Jennifer Leavitt, who has worked for The Bellevue Collection for 34 years; as well as small business owners who have found purpose and give back, like Claire Sumadiwirya and Heather Tuininga. You may have noticed we also included some Seattle icons in this issue: Linda Derschang (founder of the Derschang Grop), Kate Isler (Be Bold) and Amy Nelson (co-founder of The Riveter). These women's creations

2

Knee up: Bring one knee up at your waist level, and stay on your tiptoe on the other leg when you bring your hip forward and lean back to reach out to your opponent’s stomach or chin. Always keep your face away from your opponent in order to protect yourself and be ready to attack.

1

Uppercut is a vertical punch that goes straight to the chin or the stomach. This punch gets its power by slightly leaning on the side of where you are punching. Always have one leg forward and one leg back in order for you to have a good balance when bringing your punch forward.

3

Elbow: With your right leg forward and your left leg back, bend your elbow by bringing your hand at your chest level. Then twist your hip and left knee in, in order to throw your elbow to your opponent’s face.

Same technique as photo 3.

Hook: Bend your elbow 90 degrees, palm facing your face, then twist your right hip toward the left side so your punch will follow your rotation. Your arm should be at your shoulder level, basically at the face level of your opponent.

6

Jab: Basic punch – Full extension of your arm, palm facing down, twist your hip to reach forward as much as you can. Keep your opposite hand at your face level protecting the side of your face; we call that keeping your guard on.

7

Cross: Basic punch – Full extension of your rear arm, palm facing down. The power of your punch comes from the rotation of your hip so you can reach your opponent's face further without being to close to him/her.

How To Improve Energy and Combat Stress with Jujubeet’s ‘The Program’ ARTICLE ELENA RAZMPOOSH, MS, RD

In the go-go world that we live in, being stressed seems to be the new norm. While some stress can be a positive motivating factor, stress can also have negative effects and disturb our body’s internal balance. This can lead to mental and physical problems such as digestive issues, increased inflammation, and many other chronic diseases. Research shows that women are more likely to experience symptoms of stress, depression and anxiety. Nourishing your body with the right foods is a critical but often overlooked step to better manage stress. That is why our in house dietitian spent over a year researching, testing, and creating our newest, top-shelf juice cleanse, The Program. The Program is a high-quality artisan cleanse developed to help improve energy, stress, and support a well-balanced nervous system. The Program also provides many ingredients to decrease inflammation, and support both your immune and detoxification system. This is not your typical juice cleanse! All ingredients are sourced organic and we never add processed sugars or preservatives to our drinks. All of our juices are cold-pressed daily in Seattle, and never heated or treated with pressure to extend shelf-life. Most importantly, this program packs an extra health punch with its herb and mushroom infused juices, tonics, protein-rich smoothies, elixirs and pumpkin milk.

Jennifer Leavitt OCCUPATION: VP of Marketing COMPANY: Bellevue Collection HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN YOUR LINE OF WORK? I began my career at the Bellevue Collection (Kemper Development Company) right out of college. What began as an internship turned into a career of 34 years and counting. WHAT IS ONE MAJOR LESSON IN LIFE YOU HAVE LEARNED AND WOULD SHARE WITH OTHER WOMEN? Continue to try to put yourself in another’s shoes and also be a collaborator with creative ideas. I work with a lot of creative teams in my job—if you can imagine from Snowflake Lane to Fashion Week and everything in between—and collaboration is key. It comes best by trying to see others’ perspectives. It leads to valuable work relationships that last a long time and great synergy. WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT YOUR COMMUNITY IN BELLEVUE? Claire Sumadiwirya OCCUPATION: Founder & Managing Partner COMPANY: Bellden Cafe HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN YOUR LINE OF WORK? We celebrated our two-year anniversary of Bellden Café on April 1. Prior to Bellden, my husband (and business partner) and I opened two cafes inside hospitals in Shanghai. WHAT IS ONE MAJOR LESSON IN LIFE YOU HAVE LEARNED AND WOULD SHARE WITH OTHER WOMEN? Always put your ego down and ask for help. Growing up, I was an only child, so I never asked for help—I was always independent—but I had to learn to let go and ask for help. Being a part of a community requires flexibility and teamwork, which requires the ability to ask for help. WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT YOUR COMMUNITY IN BELLEVUE? WHAT SETS IT APART? I love the authenticity you find in Bellevue. It is such a beautiful place that offers so much to the community, but there are also areas of the city that need our support. WOMEN OF INFLUENCE

(CON TI N U ED)

Nicole Wakley OCCUPATION: Founder and Curator COMPANY: TREE HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN YOUR LINE OF WORK? It’s been 15 years since I left my career as a lawyer to plant the first seed of TREE, eco-chic home furnishings from the heart. When I was recognized in Asia Legal 500 as the top young leader in my field, I had a moment of self-reflection to reconsider what I really wanted in life. I remembered my childhood dream of opening a furniture shop with a café, and I followed my heart and opened TREE— and here we are 15 years later! WHAT IS ONE MAJOR LESSON IN LIFE YOU HAVE LEARNED AND WOULD SHARE WITH OTHER WOMEN? I’ve learned to redefine my previous understandings of success and to pursue a career and a life that fills my heart and allows me to strive toward balance. I grew up with a certain understanding of success, which led me to become a successful attorney, striving to compete and succeed in an extreme and commercial world. I was so keen to succeed in it, it was potentially at the sacrifice of greater things in life: relationships, family, all of life’s special moments. And after years of that lifestyle, I learned that I needed to find something that fulfilled me within and brought a deeper value to my life that I could share with others. I decided to refocus my life in the pursuit of balance and personal fulfillment and to listen to what my heart was telling me. WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT YOUR COMMUNITY IN BELLEVUE? WHAT SETS IT APART? Opening TREE in Bellevue has been an amazing experience. Bellevue has a true love for beautiful design and signature style, and I’ve loved getting to know so many unique and talented people from all over the world and making new connections. "MY FAVORITE QUOTE IS, 'YOUR SPARK CAN BECOME A FLAME AND CHANGE EVERYTHING.' —E.D. NIXON"

Dr. Lucy S. Hostetter OCCUPATION: Anesthesiologist and Owner COMPANY: Seattle Regenerative Medicine Center HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN YOUR LINE OF WORK? I have been an anesthesiologist for 15 years but just entered the regenerative medicine world a year ago. WHAT IS ONE MAJOR LESSON IN LIFE YOU HAVE LEARNED AND WOULD SHARE WITH OTHER WOMEN? That failure is never a reason to stop trying, it is only a learning point on the journey toward success. I constantly try to challenge myself, and I find that the harder the challenge, the more determined I become. I'm not afraid to try new things, and I'm not afraid to fail, because I know that if nothing else, I will grow and learn from the experience which will be invaluable to my future successes. WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT YOUR COMMUNITY IN BELLEVUE? WHAT SETS IT APART? Bellevue is a very diverse and welcoming community, and I have loved being a part of it. There is also a great interest here in health, wellness and fitness which falls right in line with the mission of Seattle Regenerative Medicine Center. SeattleReGen.com | @seattleregen

OCCUPATION: Principal COMPANY: 10|10 Strategies HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN YOUR LINE OF WORK? 15 years WHAT IS ONE MAJOR LESSON IN LIFEYOU HAVE LEARNED AND WOULD SHARE WITH OTHER WOMEN? I’ve learned that "more" is sneaky. Every time I’ve sought more success, more status or more stuff, it has left me wanting. It never delivers the peace, happiness or contentment I hoped it would. Turns out, more is insatiable… it always leaves us wanting even more. It took learning something new, something that would replace my desire for more achievement, accolades and acquiring. I learned how deeply loved I am, by my creator, and that his love delivers more than I could ever ask for or imagine. There I found peace, contentment and joy. Not just happiness; true joy. Knowing I’m beloved has changed my life! WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT YOUR COMMUNITY IN BELLEVUE? WHAT SETS IT APART? The Riveter: Coworking and Community

BUILT BY WOMEN, FOR EVERYONE

32

Bellevue Lifestyle | May 2019

ARTICLE SUSAN GEORGE PHOTOGRAPHY EMMA MOREM

“At its core, The Riveter was created for all women to thrive.”

WITH TODAY’S MODERN AND, MORE NOTABLY, MOBILE CULTURE, WE FIND OURSELVES WITH THE ABILITY TO RUN OUR BUSINESSES FROM WHEREVER OUR LIVES TAKE US. While we can answer emails and run socials from the phone in our pockets, there are still times when we find the need for a conference room or a community of like-minded individuals who understand what it can be like to work for yourself or remotely. Because of this, co-working spaces are more popular than ever. “Built by women, for everyone” is the motto for The Riveter, a local female-owned co-working and community space. Amy Nelson, its founder and CEO, tells us about what makes this space so unique. WHAT IS THE RIVETER’S VISION? The Riveter is a community where all women—inclusive of any race, sexuality, age, ability or marital status—can access the resources they need to build their businesses and networks. We are proud to center women while being welcoming to all. More than anything, we understand that equity in work won’t be realized without everyone having a seat at the table. At its core, The Riveter was created for all women to thrive. At The Riveter Bellevue and any of our six (and growing) locations, members can find best-in-class professional and personal development programming, robust membership options and collaborative workspaces. Our programming fosters community, and we often see connections between our members lead to new businesses or partnerships as a result.

HOT SPOT

(CON TI N U ED)

HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE CONCEPT, AND WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO CREATE THIS SPACE? Although I’d practiced law for a decade—and very much felt like I’d succeeded in rooms full of almost all men—I felt a fundamental shift when I shared the news about my first pregnancy with colleagues in 2014. I felt like the perception and perspective of me changed immediately. This moment— and all the moments after—led to a change in how I looked at my own future as an attorney. This was all compounded by what becoming a mother meant to me, and that was that I wanted to spend the time away from my girls doing something meaningful. When I was pregnant with my second daughter, I started to really think about what I wanted to do—what would sustain me for years to come and the work I could do to make an impact in the world. While I was on maternity leave, I started exploring the idea of starting my own business. Entrepreneurship was an exciting opportunity for me, and I knew I wasn’t alone in searching for resources and programming to learn more about how to start a company. I’d read in Lean In that almost half of women leave corporate America after they have kids, and I know on the flip side of that was this fact that women were starting businesses five times faster than men. I had some ideas and started going to classes on how to start a business plan, and those classes were at coworking spaces. I didn’t see many women in the spaces, and I was often the only woman in those business workshops. I yearned for that community. I wanted to talk to women who had built businesses before me, who had pivoted their careers to begin again. The idea for The Riveter was born because the community and coworking space was something I needed in my life.

34

Bellevue Lifestyle | May 2019

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE COOLEST SUCCESS STORIES OR COLLABORATIONS THAT HAVE COME OUT OF THE RIVETER? Our members are incredible, and so many of our 2,000 members have amazing stories of success. One of those stories is Armoire, a clothing rental company for women, with its founder, Ambika Singh. I met Ambika when The Riveter Capitol Hill was just an idea, and we had a conversation about how Armoire was starting to grow. After a few conversations, Ambika and her team of four employees moved into The Riveter and, over the past two years, their team has grown to 26 employees and they just raised $3 million in funding. We’re so proud of all that they’ve accomplished and their bright future. Some of my favorite moments include having rich conversations during our events and programming, especially the fireside chats that we get to have with game-changers and innovators like Jane Fonda, Maria Shriver, Sheryl Sandberg, Howard Schultz, 10 U.S. senators, Backstage Capital’s founder and The Riveter member Arlan Hamilton and more. During these events, I often watch our members making important connections that later propel their business and career. They leave inspired by those conversations and move their work forward in new ways.

With spaces in Bellevue, Capitol Hill and Fremont, you’re bound to find a location to grow your business, engage with a female-founded community, and enjoy the chocolate perks along the way! For more information, visit TheRiveter.co.

basement of WeWork in Seattle with 80 attendees. Since then, the event has grown to a sellout crowd of more than 500 attendees, held at

Benaroya Hall the last two years. Three years ago, Kate and Nickie decided to create a nonprofit organization in order to extend their reach into the community, and Be Bold was official. Kate and Nickie decided to build a platform for their group around “Be Bold,” which was one of the global themes that year for International Women’s Day, a 108-year-old celebration sponsored by the United Nations. Lifting up women and driving gender parity forward are central to Kate’s passion, and she believes the way to do it is for women to support women and inspire one another. Be Bold is about many things, but one key element is to be a place where women can really celebrate each other and share their stories every day. “We are asking women to tell their bold stories. People make bold moves every single day, and each story is important because you realize you are not alone. The more we tell each other and lock arms to support one another, the better off we are going to be,” Kate says. She says that supporting one another has been the greatest life lesson she would share with other women because she has learned that working with other women and supporting each other produces the greatest impact. She shares story after story about women who have attended Be Bold over the last several years and how it has impacted their lives, from international visitors who have taken the vision home to raise awareness in their communities, to local women who have acted on their passion as a result of what they gleaned from the event. When asked about being a professional female in Seattle, Kate appreciates what a remarkable place this area is for professional females. Women run the City of Seattle, with the top five public service jobs held by women. However, she realizes there is still much more to do in the world of technology for women. “It is still incredibly difficult for women to raise money for a startup, and there is a disadvantage in tech with the population of women and women in leadership declining in big tech in our city.” Kate is dedicated to cultural change and pushing gender parity, and she lives this dedication with all of her work through Be Bold. She also serves as the board director for Girl Rising, a global campaign for girls’ education and empowerment.

FIVE THINGS WOMEN C A N D O E V E RY D AY TO SUPPORT ONE ANOTHER

1. 2.

Ta ke a r i s k ! Do something you don’t “think” you can do. Act on your passion. Don’t be intimidated; instead, think of what you can offer and focus on that.

U t i l i z e yo u r c o m m u n i ty t o s u p p o r t yo u . We can’t do this alone, and life is not meant to be lived alone. It’s not just about you but about all of us together.

3.

Speak up and share yo u r s t o r y. Every woman’s story is unique and important, and someone can always relate to you. Sharing our stories is one way for us to band together.

4. 5.

Don’t self-select out! Don’t put one foot in and then pull it back and retreat, consumed by concerns about your abilities. Be Bold!

Ask for help. This is what we are all about. Supporting and helping one another will help us get further, faster. Life is better lived together, not alone.
