Who we are LEYF is a charitable social enterprise employing over 300 staff across 24 community, workplace and Children’s Centre nurseries in London, many in some of the city’s most deprived areas.
With our unique and socially inclusive approach, we make a real difference to the lives of more than 2,300 children and their parents every year, helping them develop a passion for learning, regardless of their background. We operate across six London boroughs – Barking & Dagenham, Camden, Kensington & Chelsea, Lambeth, Tower Hamlets and Westminster.
Finally, an all-embracing community ethos means ‘doing good’ doesn’t stop at the nursery door, as our multi-generational and partnership-led approach helps to enrich the natural strength and qualities of each local community we serve.
We are also committed to helping disadvantaged young adults realise their own potential. Every year we recruit around 20 people to our Early Years apprenticeship scheme, which develops their vocational and interpersonal skills, leads to a Diploma for the Children & Young People’s Workforce, and offers the opportunity to start their career in childcare with LEYF.

Our history and values Established in 1903, our pioneering founders such as Margaret Horn had a very clear purpose from the start – to promote child welfare and family health at the heart of a local community in need. Over 100 years before the first official Children’s Centre and an incredible 45 years before the NHS, we were already pioneers – offering training in professional childcare, outreach and home visits, along with local drop-in sessions and classes in parenting. We are passionate about the long-term social impact that comes from combining a progressive and research-based nursery education with the creation of social and cultural capital. We ensure that our core values influence everything we do. Our ambitions remain as clear today as when we began: to build a better future for London’s children, families and local communities through a commitment to Excellence in Early Years education, training and research.

Our social impact Research continues to confirm the long term impact of a good quality Early Years education for all children. However, despite great strides in social welfare over the past century, children are now slipping back into poverty – with over 4 in 10 London children affected. To tackle this issue, we have developed a unique social business model that uses sustainable income from our nurseries in more affluent areas to target some of the capital’s most deprived communities; in doing so, we make high quality day care available to families that have traditionally been unable to reach or afford it. We are developing a measure of our social impact that focuses on key drivers that directly benefit children’s development. This is assessed using a combination of the time children spend in our nurseries, how long they stay with us, the quality of their experience and the degree to which we help develop their home learning environment.
The social impact we deliver is not limited to high quality childcare provision. It includes supporting parents back to work, multi-generational engagement with communities, local employment of nursery staff and our apprenticeship programme. Every year we recruit 20–30 apprentices which helps develop their skills and employability, and in turn grows our own high quality workforce.

Financial review LEYF has grown substantially year on year since 2005 both financially (nursery revenues) and in social impact (in the number of children attending LEYF).
As the graph illustrates, in 2005 the organisation had 11 nurseries, 85 staff and an annual income of ÂŁ2m; this has grown to 24 nurseries, more than 300 staff and an annual turnover of ÂŁ8.3m in the financial year ended 31st March 2013. Even more impressive is the growth in the number of children who have attended a LEYF nursery, increasing from just over 1,000 in 2005 to almost 2,400 by the end of March 2013.

The future We have ambitious plans to grow our footprint further, increasing our reach to 5,000 children over the next 3 years.
We are already forging close partnerships with like-minded property developers, housing associations, academies and other strategic partners to achieve this. And we would like to find new partners who can help us open more nurseries where they are really needed – and so build a better future for more of London’s children.
