Mario Schmolka Interview

MARIO IS KNOWN FOR HIS STRONG YET SENSUAL IMAGERY. BESIDES HIS FASHION AND BEAUTY WORK HE HAS ALSO TAKEN PORTRAITS OF NUMEROUS CELEBRITIES INCLUDING TOMMY HILFIGER, AERIN LAUDER, KARIM RASHID, MANOLO BLAHNIK AND BAR RAFAELI AMONG OTHERS. SCHMOLKA CAPTURES AN EMOTION, A STORY IN A SINGLE FRAME. Born in Vienna, Mario Schmolka graduated from the College of Photography before moving to Milan, where he assisted at the legendary Superstudio 13 as well as for some of the most influential photographers and was involved in productions for clients including Prada,Versace,Vogue and Marie Claire. His first book, ‘Intense’, was published by daab - Verlag in Germany followed by two solo exhibitions. He was also invited to be a guest lecturer at the Art Institute of NYC. Mario and his family had been living in NYC for the past six years and have just recently relocated to Los Angeles. He divides his time between LA, New York and Europe. This is Mario Schmolka. How would you describe yourself as a photographer? I would say I am a photographer that loves to play with the “BEAUTY” of imperfection and juxtaposition. So whenever something seems perfect and beautiful on the surface but shows a second side when you take a closer look, thats what I am looking for. that’s what make pictures interesting to me. In terms of the working process I like to come on set prepared with a certain idea and concept, but once there I go with the dynamics of collaboration. After all in my work it is a creative process where most of the times several people are contributing. So as long as it goes in a direction that I like, I give everybody space. I think that

46

is the only way to get what I like to call “the unexpected moments”. Is there a photographer who has been a particular influence for you? When I first started I was very much drawn to photographers like Paolo Roversi, Erwin Blumenfeld or Guy Bourdin. Another photographer I admire is Ray Metzker, I am not sure, if that shows in my work though. How did you discover photograhpy, and how long have you been doing it? I started being interested in creative processes of any kind at a very early age, but photography in particular I started quite late by the age of 19. What do you feel a photo to possess to be successful? Well, that depends on the perspective on the term successful. I guess everybody defines that differently, however for me a picture is successful when a- I feel happy with it, b- the moment I can see that people are reacting to it. What is your opinion, has everything already been said in photography? No, as we are evolving as a species, also our creativity evolves. In addition there is a certain quality to a photographic image, a still image, that will always be different to any other visual language or media.

SURREAL BEAUTY Richard Tuschman photographed the dollhouse and model separately, layering the images for a trompe l’oeil mash-up. 48

The series ‘’Welcome to Her Dollhouse’’, introduced Tuschman to the world of fashion photography in an especially delightful and inspiring way. So what is his secret? Dioramas. He builds them and then fills them with dollhouse furniture that he purchases or builds. He puts figurines in to match the lighting and drops the models into the scene with Photoshop. In his words, Tuschman has “been making dioramas long before Photoshop was introduced, but it’s nice to be able to tie everything together” by using this method. Richard Tuschman began experimenting with digital imaging in the early 1990’s, developing a style that synthesised his interests in photography, painting and assemblage. His work has since been exhibited and published internationally and recognised by, among others, Photo District News, American Photography, Prix de la Photographie, Paris, and the International Photography Awards. Greg Lotus - Vogue’s favorite www.greglotus.com

After two decades of glamorous photography, Greg Lotus’ bio reads much more like the sanctified black book everybody wants to get their hands on. His photographs span his 20-year career draw inspiration from classical paintings, international travels and life experiences. Lotus has developed his own evocative way of using light and shadow, playing with angles and composition to enhance the graphic quality of his images. With editorial credits that include Italian Vogue, Vanity Fair, Vogue Pelle and GQ-and many a cover among them-the work of fashion photographer Greg Lotus has been f looding newsstands for more than a decade. Lotus has come a long way from his upbringing in rural West Virginia to where he is today. “I didn’t see my first real city till I was sixteen, when I wrote an essay on world peace and won a school trip to New York City,” he recalls. He grew up surrounded

“I TEND TO STEAL BEAUTY FROM THE ORGANIC BEAUTY OF THE NATURAL WORLD, PEOPLE AND OBJECTS, SO ‘DESIRE’ IS THE FIRST EMOTION THAT COMES TO MIND.” by nature and then he moved to the city where he was introduced to a whole new world of experiences. The combination of those things leaded him to a real love of art and beauty that found itself in his own art, too. Photography has always been a passion of Lotus. “As a photographer I get to see the inside of a picture, while others only get to see the outside,” analyses Lotus, “It’s a powerful feeling.” Lotus has evolved his work from mainly fashion photography to an all out artist whose limited edition prints can now be found in fine galleries. The respected fashion photographer has captured the attention of art enthusiasts, along with all the fashionista’s, with his artistic compositions. What his eyes capture is viewed in awe and admiration everywhere, as we’ve seen in popular campaign ads from Cartier and L’Oreal, to Vogue covers, and to celebrities such as Penelope Cruz and Megan Fox.

PLEASURES

Champagne Brut Vintage 1995 by Dom PĂŠrignon

To taste Dom Perignon is to discover the unique spirit and style of a truly great wine of Champagne. Every stage of vineyard selection, winemaking and slow cellar ageing is, in itself, a quest for perfection. Brut Vintage 1995, a monumental champagne, is dancing in the glass from the moment it is poured, with that fine and persistent perlage, and those complex aromas that make it sumptuous and exceptional. On the nose, this wine opens with notes of redfleshed peaches, rapidly evolving into cashew nuts and dried herbs. The aromatic experience finishes on a note of lightly toasted brioche. On the palate, it offers a host of well-orchestrated, precise and full-bodied tastes. A champagne that has spent over 13 years on the yeast, is recommend drinking as a meditation wine, or combining with the raw fish and shellfish. Immortal. 76

She has been a big animal lover since childhood – from guinea pigs to her aunt’s dog, with whom she spent entire summer vacations. Today, she is the proud owner of Maja, the “most beautiful Bernese Mountain Dog mix in the world,” (of course, she is in the book!) and has found her calling in photography. She specializes in portraits of people and dogs. She feels it is very important to capture the unique personality of each of her subjects, two-legged or four-legged, in each shot. Sandra Müller lives in Haimendorf (near Nuremberg), Germany.

What dog owner hasn’t done this? You anthropomorphize your fourlegged friend, put thoughts and feelings into his or her head that he or she almost certainly doesn’t have, and basically turn your pet into a fourlegged person. That is exactly how photographer Sandra Müller feels about her dog Maja-who inspired Dog People-the book that provides hilarious and creative photographic answers to the question: “What kind of person would this dog be?”Whether it’s Great Dane Holly as a couch potato or “Gismo” riding a Harley, these images and more make up the

unforgettable and endearing collection of portraits of man’s best friend in Dog People. “No, this book is not meant to be a fashion show for dogs and dog owners. This book is simply a thought experiment: what kind of person would my dog be? And let’s be honest: who hasn’t given his or her dog a lengthy explanation which the dog seems to listen to raptly but surely doesn’t understand every word of? Yes, yes, I know… YOUR dog understands every word! So does mine!” (Sandra Müller, photographer/author of Dog People) The book is a colorful parade of

dogs, from Giant Schnauzers to Pugs, from registered purebreds to street mutts. There is also a humorous description of each dog explaining how the outfit was chosen to make the particular animal a Dog Man or Dog Lady. For example, take “Gisbert,” a Pug who would surely be a doctor if he were human-as he loves his vet so much that all you have to do is say “Dr. Uwe” and he pricks his ears-as much as any Pug can prick his ears, at least. Dog People shows us 83 wonderful dog portraits - from a purebred Standard Schnauzer to a street mutt – and a panoply of human characters.

TAILORED STORIES The suiting street. A significant place to be for those that are into high-end, impeccably made bespoke clothing. From the late 18th century tailors began moving into the Savile Row. It became synonymous with high quality tailoring serving the rich and powerful. A World-Famous Clientele It’s been the go-to destination for fashion-conscious men for centuries. The following are just a few of the most notable. The late, great Winston Churchill frequented many of the Row’s top designers on a regular basis, including his very favorite, Henry Poole & Co. In fact, it was this particular tailor that was responsible for Churchill’s now iconic pin-striped suits, as well as other staples. To this day, Henry Poole & Co. still gets ongoing requests from high-end customers for custom-made suits just like the ones Churchill made so famous. Mr. Charlie Chaplin’s legendary portrayals of the “little tramp” on the silver screen, baggy suits and all. However, in his off-screen life, Chaplin was just as well known for being a well-dressed, dapper man of impeccable taste, so naturally he was a Savile Row customer as well. He is well known for wearing classic designs from the likes of Gieves & Hawkes in some of Old Hollywood’s most famous photographs of him. Horatio Nelson. also wore gorgeous uniforms made by well-known tailors in the Row. In fact, he was killed wearing one of them at the Battle of Trafalgar. Of course, these are just a few of the many famous folks that have visited the Row in search of the best custom-tailored clothing money can buy. Others have included the likes of Frank Sinatra, Jude Law and the Beatles to touch on just a few noteworthy names.

Savile Row is today modern and superb then ever, with a range of tailors providing bespoke tailoring to customers in suit styles ranging traditional to modern cutting edge. Illustration by Paula Jáuregui

It signed a partnership with the Rossocorsa team (Ferrari dealership for the Lombardy region) which establishes the official entry in the world of four-wheels. The

Tea for Two. De Fursac Collection Born in Paris in 1973, and setting up its first workshop Saint-Pierre-de-Fursac, the brand made its mark at the dawn of the 1980s with the launch of its first ad campaigns under the original name of Monsieur De Fursac. In town as much as on screen, where a famous 1982 advertising slot purred its incisive slogan, it became the man’s label. It was an iconic signature which in spite of not surviving the brand’s evolution certainly helped establish its status as one of the main references for masculine chic. In 1992 Monsieur de Fursac opened its first boutique in Paris at 112, rue de Richelieu (2nd arrondissement), in the former temple of 19th century French elegance, the High Life Tailor. It was decided the headquarters should also be installed here, and so they remain today. The brand sharpened, modernised and shortened its name a decade later. It traversed the early 2000’s with style in its line of fire, working with a clutch of important Italian clothiers, such as Lanificio F.lli Cerruti, who have been making exclusive fabrics for De Fursac since 2010. Together with its collaborators De Fursac today focuses its savoir-faire and love of fine materials on creating razor-sharp silhouettes, blending yesterday’s elegance with contemporary chic. The high-end pieces reflect its own reputation in their pertinence and durability. All images © De Fursac

From brand website:There are two schools of thought when it comes to nuptial elegance. The first, less established but becoming increasingly popular, says the groom should wear a tuxedo on his big day. If you go for this option, there’s plenty of space for manoeuvre. Unlike gala balls which insist upon the wearing of a classic tuxedo, weddings don’t really impose such dress codes. And as a result it’s potentially a rather exciting terrain. Your tuxedo could very well be in navy blue. It could also be worn with a tie, and not a bow tie. It can be punctuated with a pair of non-patent shoes. With or without a pocket square. After all this is your day, no one is going to reprimand you for bending the rules of classical elegance. Likewise there’ll be no reproaches if you decide to adapt your outfit as the day goes by. If you’re starting at the town hall, then don’t go all out straight away. Establish the outlines of your elegance. But wait until the religious ceremony, if there is one, to really mark the difference by adding an accessory (why not a button hole flower?), change suede shoes for leather ones, swap a cotton tie for a silk tie, and so on… Later, much later, when the party’s in full swing, you can take all that off and have a more flexible good time. But that’s a whole different chapter. The second school of thought consists of building around the notion of simplicity. If you chose that camp, opt for a beautiful suit cut from high quality wool. Black is the colour of mourning, and not of love, so chose navy or grey. Light grey is particularly appropriate for a wedding, and much less so for a business context. Select a jacket with one or two buttons. With a one-button jacket there’s no need for anything else. With a two-button jacket, don’t hesitate to add a waistcoat. This will ensure that even in the heat of the moment you won’t find yourself just in shirt sleeves. The pocket square, which can form a neat white band on your chest, will also mark out the exceptional nature of the day. Especially if it is a plain weave in silk. The shirt should be white and immaculate. Don’t bother choosing something with a satin or shiny finish It’s a big day. And it will undoubtedly be or to perfectly match the dress of your bride-to-be. And a long day. Groom, father of the bride or then you won’t have to go shopping with a small piece best man, you have reams of obligations of fabric in your pocket… White will do nicely. and must reconcile two contradictory To complete your outfit, you need a tie (much more requirements. Perfect elegance: to suited to the occasion than a bow tie), which you can maintain self-assured eye-contact with match to the wool of your suit, to avoid any risks.Your the priest or registrar. And perfect ease outfit will be perfectly clear. Maybe even as clear as your to effortlessly leap onto tables and wave napkins around in spite of a whirring love... mind and heavy eyelids… In other words play it well. Note by Marc Beaugé.

The First Acquatic Horological Machine

On the wrist, the Horological Machine No. 7 “Aquapod” felt as though it was easily the weirdest MB&F timepiece I’d ever put on. Those who know the brand will be quick to point out the severity of that statement. Pretty much all MB&F Horological Machine timepieces are weird by design, yet mostly very comfortable on the wrist. The first Horological Machine was launched by the brand back in 2007, introducing MB&F’s penchant for futuristic designs and inventive watchmaking. The Aquapod is a fitting successor to ten years of innovation, with its interesting twist on that staple of underwater watches—the dive bezel. Crafted in ceramic, the unidirectional rotating bezel orbits the case like an inflatable rubber ring at the swimming pool. From the side, the HM7 looks a lot like a 1950s- or 1960s-era idea of a UFO, which goes directly to MB&F’s enduring love of science fiction themes married to horological elegance. Its design was influenced from MB&F founder Maximilian Büsser’s encounter with a jellyfish during a family beach holiday. The underlying goal was to create a watch that feels both like an MB&F and as a sports / dive watch at the same time. Thus, it means mixing elements like sapphire bulbs, disc-driven display of the time, 3-dimensional architecture of the movement with a 60-minute diving scale, water resistance, usability underwater and maximum legibility. Inspired from the streamline, biomorphic shape of the jellyfish, an animal which MB&F has turned horological by conceiving a new, verticallymounted movement capable of transferring energy from the tentacle-shaped winding rotor at the bottom to the flying tourbillon regulator at the very top. The hours and minutes are displayed on

IN ITS FIRST YEAR, THE PRODUCTION RUN WILL BE 33 PIECES IN TITANIUM AND 66 IN RED GOLD. MORE WILL FOLLOW IN SUBSEQUENT YEARS, AND IF MB&F’S TRACK RECORD IS ANYTHING TO GO BY, EXPECT VARIANTS IN VIVID COLOURS INSPIRED BY MARINE LIFE.

After pushing the boundaries of horological exploration by blasting into outer space, launching into the sky, and powering down the road and around the track, the Aquapod is the MB&F’s first timepiece that pays homage to the oceans. It starts a new path of looking to science fact rather than science fiction, and the natural world rather than machines for inspiration.

lightweights discs – in aluminum and titanium – that are mounted on ceramic ball bearings around the periphery of the movement. They rotate, bringing the current time in line with the vertical indicator at the front of the display. MB&F is guaranteeing 72 hours of power reserve for this automatic movement as well. The HM7 Aquapod is available in two guises, titanium with a bright blue bezel, or red gold with a black bezel, and tells the time via two large rotating rings. Made of aluminium for lightness, one ring is for the minutes and the other for the hours, with a blue arrow pointing to the time. Though the time display is unusual, the size of the rings make it legible. Like many jellyfish, HM7 glows in the dark: on the hour and minute numerals, around the inside of the movement and along the tentaclelike winding rotor. Their curved, threedimensional nature is a m a nuf a c t ur i ng challenge, both for machining and for finishing, which alternates between polished and satinfinished sections. Hidden underneath the lightweight titanium tentacles is a sector in much heavier platinum that ensures that the HM7 Engine is wound efficiently. Despite its size, with its floating rotating bezel it measures a massive 53.8mm diameter, the Aquapod is ergonomic. The case is relatively light, even in red gold, with articulated lugs that sit under the bezel. They allow the watch to hug the wrist closely and also make the effective size of the case smaller than the edge to edge measurement. The only drawback is its height, which is essentially twice that of an ordinary watch. The wearability of the watch is significant, demonstrating how the brand manages to balance both a distinctly novel design with practicality. In its early days MB&F’s watches were just as avantgarde, but not always as wearable, like the HM1 for instance, which lacked equilibrium on the wrist.

THE TECHFRAME FERRARI 70 YEARS TOURBILLON CHRONOGRAPH IS AVAILABLE IN THREE VERSIONS KING GOLD, PEEK CARBON, AND TITANIUM. Hublot and Ferrari have been in collaboration since 2011 and this year, the partnership has reached a new chapter: The Hublot Techframe Ferrari 70 Years Tourbillon Chronograph has been completely designed by Ferrari under the lead of head designer Flavio Manzoni. The starting point for the designers was the Hublot movement— the “engine” of the watch, around which they designed a highperformance chassis. The exclusive timepiece comes equipped with a mono-pusher chronograph, a tourbillon, and a power reserve of 115 hours. The black structure on the dial holds the

114

chronograph counters and offers excellent legibility. The crown at 4 o’clock, raised by a black PVD Titanium, reduces the size of the watch to the greatest possible extent, and increases its aerodynamic look. The red push-button is strategically placed to facilitate its use and makes the design more ergonomic. The result is a chassis case that mirrors the styling imaged by Ferrari. We conclude that all the 210 units have already been sold. Sign that collectors have not missed the opportunity. This was also the case for one of the prototypes that were beaten at RM Sotheby’s auction on September 9, at 180,000 euros.

Consistently delivering cutting edge design and innovative engineering decades, German carmaker Audi’s latest incarnation is its most daring. The Audi A8 is packed with tech, refinement and dynamic ability offering a great ride as demanded of a luxury limousine. In addition to the flat-plane crankshaft, which synchronises engine firing, and equal-length exhaust headers which equalise the sound, the exhaust line now features a new central section along with a largerdiameter silencer.

THE GEARS VARIABLE BOOST MANAGEMENT One of most innovative features of the GTC4Lusso T’s V8 is Variable Boost Management, a control software that adjusts torque delivery to suit the gear selected, delivering increasingly powerful pick-up as revs rise, whilst optimising fuel consumption. And all without impinging on driving pleasure.

The Power of Evolution

As the car goes up through the gears (from 3rd to 7th), the amount of torque delivered by the engine increases all the way up to 760 Nm in 7th gear. This has allowed Ferrari to adopt longer gear ratios in the higher gears to the benefit of fuel consumption (the car’s range is, in fact 30 per cent more than the V12-engined model).

Unleash the Power

The car’s V8 is the latest evolution to emerge from the engine family that was named the 2016 International Engine of the Year. The 3,855 cc power unit is both compact and efficient, developing 610 cv at 7,500 rpm, resulting in a specific power output of 158 cv/l, the highest in its category. It is also responds instantaneously to the throttle delivering increasingly powerful acceleration (760 Nm of maximum torque between 3,000 and 5,250 rpm) while optimising fuel consumption. The instant throttle response typical of Ferrari V8 engines is guaranteed by a flat-plane crankshaft, compact turbines featuring

128

twin-scroll technology and a three-piece cast exhaust manifold and turbo housing, the former with equal-length pipes to optimise pressure waves in the turbine. The car’s excellent performance across the entire rev range, on the other hand, is the result of intensive research into maximising combustion efficiency. The solutions adopted include high-tumble intake manifolds, specifically shaped to improve air entry to the combustion chamber, an ion-sensing system with adaptive ignition and multi-spark functionality which optimises combustion both under high and partial loads across the engine’s rev range.

The sporting Bentley by Rolls Royce

THE R-TYPE CONTINENTAL WAS A HIGH-PERFORMANCE VERSION OF THE R-TYPE, THE SECOND SERIES OF POST-WAR BENTLEY AUTOMOBILES, REPLACING THE MARK VI. IT WAS THE FASTEST FOUR-SEAT CAR IN PRODUCTION AT THE TIME, THE EPITOME OF BRITISH LUXURY IN THE 1950S AND THE FIRST CAR TO CARRY THE CONTINENTAL NAMEPLATE. DESPITE HAVING A UNIFORM STYLE, EACH CAR WAS UNIQUE IN DETAIL. In the early 1950s, Bentley was a Rolls Royce subsidiary undergoing a transition to post-war design and manufacture processes. Bentley was still a luxury boutique manufacturer at the time. Rolls-Royce management took the decision to develop a Bentley motor car capable of producing high maximum speeds ideal for Continental touring on the long straight roads of Europe. The higher speeds were to be coupled with correspondingly high rates of acceleration and excellent handling. In order to achieve these lofty ambitions a tremendous amount of research and testing were conducted using quarter scale models in the Hucknall wind tunnel. Extensive testing and alterations allowed Ivan Evernden and John Blatchley of the Motor Car Division to design a body not only of exceptional style, but also of an aerodynamic shape that reduced drag and achieved excellent levels of stability even at speeds in excess of 100mph. From this was born a prototype designated “Corniche II” by the design department but nicknamed “Olga” for its registration number: OLG490. Chief engineer Ivan Evernden was restricted in the basic chassis details, so in order to improve performance, he pursued reductions in weight and frontal area and looked to tall gearing and close gearbox ratios for high cruising speeds. Engine modifications were confined to carburetion and manifolding. The four-seat, two-door fastback body was drawn by Rolls-Royce stylist J.P. Blatchley and executed in aluminium by London coachbuilder H.J. Mulliner, long a Rolls-Royce clothier. That was mated to an enlarged six-cylinder engine with 4,556cc of displacement. For the

136

heavy 1954 Bentley R-Type, this produced top speeds of up to 105 mph and a 0 to 50mph take-off in just over 9 seconds. That might not impress today, but for a luxury fastback in the 1950s, it was an engineering feat. Described as, “a new stage in the evolution of the post-war Bentley”, the magnificent Continental sports saloon has been synonymous with effortless high speed cruising in the grand manner since its introduction in 1952 on the R-Type chassis. Of all-welded construction, the latter enabled the incorporation of a much-needed improvement to RollsRoyce’s standard bodywork in the shape of an enlarged boot together with associated changes to rear wings and suspension. During the Continental’s 1953-1955 production run, only 208 motorcars were produced, of which 193 were fastbacks. The vast majority was ordered by enthusiasts in the Home Countries, and as such only 43 exited the factory with left-hand drive. With the newly available Hydra-Matic automatic transmission available, fewer still were ordered with a manual transmission. This example has the most desirable and least commonly seen specification of original left-hand drive with a manual center gear change—and a bit more to boot. The big Bentley is easy to drive and not as lumbering as you’d expect. The thin-rimmed steering wheel and welcoming seats encourage a relaxed driving experience, the better to enjoy old-fashioned British opulence and the admiration of onlookers. It’s best to park out of sight from the paparazzi, though, lest they see you laboring over the heavy steering and sweating about stopping the 16.7-foot-long vessel.

GEA concept: space for wit and passion www.italdesign.it Electric concept car at the Geneva motor show provides a blueprint for how a future luxury Audi autonomous saloon could look, and be used inside and out. Dubbed the Gea, this ultra-futuristic rig shows what the future may hold for the automotive realm. The concept has been designed by none other than Italdesign’s styling chief Wolfgang Egger who moved to the design house from Audi last year. The firm describes the GEA as having the look of a “stylish saloon with a sporty twist”.

KESSEL RACING NEWS by LE GRAND MAG

A DREAM COME TRUE: START RACING An opportunity which doesn’t present itself to many: becoming a racing driver is a privilege that many car and racing enthusiasts dream of, while watching the races on TV or from the stands at the track. The dream of getting behind the wheel of those cars can become reality, if you put your faith in the right structure, such as Kessel Racing, which, since 2000, has been assisting amateur drivers and leading them to compete in the most exhilarating granturismo racing competitions. Whatever the championship, one thing never changes, we always race behind the wheel of a Ferrari. We accompany you on the discovery of this path.

146

A lot of hours spent in front of the TV, watching so many races, bend after bend. Admiring that drivers, dreaming that emotions. And, then, the decision to take it seriously: “I want to start racing”. Waiting for the green light at the wheel of a racing Ferrari on the Mugello track is a dream for many, for some it remains a Playstation pastime, while for others it becomes reality. And it all starts with a mere phone call: “Kessel Racing? I would like an appointment”. For those who aspire to get behind the wheel of a racing car, the path is easy: just turn to the right team and go. A career as an amateur driver is always a fascinating journey, made simpler if backed by a team like the Swiss Kessel Racing, which, since 2000, has been competing on Europe’s most exciting circuits.

KESSEL RACING NEWS by LE GRAND MAG

The Driver Manager is the guide who accompanies the aspiring driver on this journey, which usually starts with days on the test circuits, alongside a coach who explains how the car works, the importance of telemetry, utility of onboard video. You simply show up at the track, the team takes care of everything else, from the racing attire to the right car: moving from a road car to a racing car requires some practice and cars like the Ferrari 458 or 488 Challenge are the right step. Compared to the GT3 they are simpler, more balanced, they offer a driving environment similar to what we are used to in sports cars for the road. The sun sets on the track and the first day’s racing comes to an end, the engines cool in the pit while the aspiring driver mulls over the question “Shall I get an International Driving License?”. This is the document necessary for entry into the GT Championships, such as the Ferrari Challenge, where the amateur finds himself on the track against drivers of his own level. Here only gentlemen are allowed, a fair battle fought out on the track with equal means. Every weekend of racing is organized in every detail by the Kessel team: the driver only needs to bring the right passion to get behind the wheel! The technical director, ensures that the vehicle is as competitive and efficient as possible. The physiotherapist and athletic trainer work to maximize the physical condition of the driver, both during the race weekend and in the time between

The Kessel Racing team races mainly in two distinct championships but always at the wheel of Ferrari, starting with the Ferrari Challenge, the single-make trophy exclusive to the 488 Challenge. Born in 1993 and regulated according to FIA rules, it directly involves dealers in the area (such as Kessel for the Italian speaking region of Switzerland) and imposes rules which ensure the vehicles have the same performance so that the driver’s ability is what makes the difference. It is a championship divided by continent (Europe, North America and Asia-Pacific) and in three categories: Pirelli Trophy, Pirelli AM Trophy and Shell Cup. Other subdivisions are classes such as the Gentlemen’s Cup for the over 55s and the Ladies Cup which includes all the women in the race. Another championship is the Blancpain GT Series, where the Kessel team races in the Ferrari 488 GT3. Approved by the FIA and organized by the Stéphane Ratel Organization, it is divided into two main classes, the Blancpain Sprint Series and the Endurance. The races are held on the most important European circuits and the calendar includes legendary races such as the 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps. 147

one stage and another, thanks also to the right nutrition tips. The coach, on the other hand, guides the driver to approach the track in the best manner, exploiting the characteristics of the car, geared to the individual track. The coach is also a friend to the driver, both on and off the track, a two-way relationship to face each stage with the utmost concentration and the spirit to win! Whether it’s in Monza or maybe at SPA-Francorchamps or, why not, at Le Mans, racing over an entire championship or a famous 24 Hours is not just a sport. As all Kessel Racing drivers can confirm, it is a lesson that serves both in life and work. Prepare the race, study the track, train your body, stimulate your mind. Then drop the visor and wait for the lights without ever stopping until victory: it’s much more than just a sport.

PROFESSIONALS ON THE TRACK, FRIENDS OFF TRACK Drivers, coaches, preparers, mechanics, team managers and even team owner Ronnie Kessel: an important bond is forged, each season, among the women and men of the team; a friendship that goes beyond the confines of the tracks and continues into everyday life, even when you are not wearing the Kessel colours. Many drivers, ready for every green light have been racing for years with the Swiss team, and most of them confirm their participation at the start of every championship, whether in the Blancpain GT Series or the Ferrari Challenge. And so, in addition to the group professionalism at the track, Kessel drivers also find real friends with whom to celebrate at the end of the race. As they say, no victory is as sweet as the ones that you can share with friends 148

Ferrari 250 Cabriolet: Eternal Beauty www.rmsothebys.com

Classy and sophisticated maybe the two best words to describe this 1960 Ferrari 250GT Series II Cabriolet. Ferrari considered this their top-ofthe-line car, supplanting the more affordable California Spyder as their de facto road going GT. Almost 50 years after it was rolled out of the production line, the car looks like it’s barely lost its lustre. the 250 series was Ferrari’s crowning achievement of the 1950s and early 1960s, the ideal model for a motorist looking for a refined rider rather than full-throttle fervour. The high watermarks of this series have defined the Prancing Horse in the decades since. In many ways, the 250 set the stylistic and cultural tone for Ferrari, which has grown exponentially model after model. From the lovely Lusso and the sporty California Spider to the Tour de France and, of course, the Series II Cabriolet, the basic construction formula was nothing short of perfect and included a high-revving, powerful Colombo V-12 engine, which meant despite the Ferrari’s air of assurance, it concealed a rugged edge. A shiver-inducing exhaust note, and an almost unbelievably sexy design by the best Italian coach-builders that would clothe a chassis in two-door form. A relatively long 102.2-inch wheelbase and independent front suspension produce excellent ride quality. While the car is not designed to be raced, its predictable behaviour allows it to be steered with the throttle, if one cares to indulge in such unseemly behaviour in a sophisticated car. Even in more sedate conditions, it’s impossible to resist the lure of peak power at 7,000 rpm, where six-into-one exhaust collectors amplify the unmistakable sound of a carbureted engine. Most of the Series II cars had open lights, which probably cut a day out of the production schedule — but at the cost of replacing the defining lights of the original Cab with protrusions that displayed necessity over design. Only 200 Series II Cabriolets were ever constructed, which is a remarkably small number when one compares it to its contemporary, the Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster, but nevertheless, it was the start of series production for Ferrari on a grander scale. The original Ferrari GT is the car that gave the company the resources to continue on and prosper for good reasons: it’s wonderful to look at and to drive. For the same reasons, it is recognised as one of the most elegant and entertaining cars of the era.

DREAMS MADE TO MEASURE By Valerio Cometti

Design Luxury defined as rarity. Exclusivity as access to new, unexplored limits Design as an expression of art and performance The world of high performance cars is the new frontier of high fashion.

Valerio Cometti is a designer, creative director and mechanical engineer. In 2005, he founded Valerio Cometti+V12 Design in Milan, which he still runs today. His Creativity and Technical Skills allow him to both design products and develop the image of prestigious Italian and international brands, either innovative start-ups or multinational companies operating in a wide range of sectors, from luxury goods to eyewear, furnishing to lighting, consumer electronics to sporting equipment. Follow him at www.v12design.com

Owning an exclusive product means being able to express your personality. The rarity of the object extends its significance and gives us the opportunity of adapting it to reflect our tastes, values and sensitivity, which in turn makes it even more desirable, as it renders our ability to convey our thoughts even more acute. Making an exclusive designer bag or dress isn’t such a terribly complicated thing to do, but doing the same with a car, for example, is a task of astonishing complexity. The concept of customisation can be taken to various levels. With standard production cars, you can add a list of optionals and accessories every day that would horrify Henry Ford, who was perfectly happy to allow his customers to choose any colour they wanted for his Ford Model T, as long as it was black! The aim with mass market brands is to sell not only the car but also the feeling that you’ve bought something with which you can express your personality through the colour, wheels, interiors, and so on. Possession as an expression of yourself and a manifestation of your character - that’s what buying has come to mean in our times. If we move up the automotive hierarchy, we come across more sophisticated customisation programmes, with finer, more exclusive materials and finishes. At BMW, this programme is know as ‘Individual’, while Porsche prefers to use the term ‘Exclusive’, to take just two examples. Moving up yet another level, the programmes become even more haute couture, such as ‘Tailor Made’ at Ferrari. In a specifically dedicated showroom, with the assistance of one of Ferrari’s talented designers, the customer personalises the interiors and outside of the vehicle with truly unique combinations and accessories, constantly under the watchful, but proactive and expert, eyes of a stylist from the Maranello company. There’s a similar programme at McLaren, known as MSO, which offers sample paint colours and designer livery, all with a view to creating finishes for the individual customer. The result is a car that’s truly unique, a genuine one-off. Is it really, though? To a casual onlooker or untrained eye, a Ferrari 488 emerging from the Tailor Made programme or a McLaren 720 which has undergone the MSO treatment may seem identical to the standard series models. The next step upwards is offered by Pagani, with mini-series of a few limited edition models, or truly one-off models such as the new Zonda HP Barchetta, which was built by Pagani for none other than Horacio Pagani in person! The quality of the product is a world away from the logic of standard series production. The mechanical tolerances are closer to those of the master watchmaker, and the processing and finishing times are what you’d expect in the

production of the finest jewellery. If your budget and passion are unlimited, you need to pay another visit to Maranello, where art and technology appear to exist side by side. When you order a one-off vehicle, the engine, gearbox, suspension and most of the other mechanical components will be taken from the precious ‘organ bank’ of the production division but, from that point onwards, the lucky customer will have the honour of working alongside Ferrari Design on a vehicle which, as the contract itself specifies, has to be unique, the only one of its kind (unless the same customer goes on to order another one, which has already happened in the past!). In this case, we go back to a concept of exclusive production that wasn’t seen since the time of carriages for royalty and the aristocracy - the objects are unique, luxurious, precious and able to express the personality of their occupants. This refined, but also profitable, trend hasn’t escaped the notice of the top people at VWAudi, who’ve head-hunted the Italian Filippo Perini away from the helm of the Lamborghini styling centre to place him at the head of the new Italdesign Automobili Speciali, with the historic design house converted into a structured centre for the conception and creation of one-off or few-off vehicles, as the limited edition series of a handful of models are now known. The aggressive ‘Zerouno’ is the first model to emerge from this new creative centre, which combines sublime design and advanced engineering. That motoring emblem par excellence, RollsRoyce, also decided to venture into this rarefied, ultra-refined sector, with the sumptuous Sweptail, which recently made its debut at the Concorso di Eleganza event, held at Villa d’Este in Italy. A oneoff model produced for a well known collector, the Sweptail is an extraordinary vehicle whose registration plate consists of two figures milled out of solid gold. The forms are inspired by the Golden Era of the twenties and thirties, when the English company created some of the most elegant and luxurious cars of all times. The surfaces of the roof and sides are as smoothly burnished as those of a yacht, and this inspiration is also clearly visible in the interiors. It’s therefore evident that luxury and exclusivity promote art and innovation, because vehicles of this kind become a kind of laboratory, in which the designers experiment with solutions which, for all their elite qualities, also have repercussions for standard production cars. The customer, if we can use such a humble word, who loves beautiful things and mechanical performance at the same time, becomes a modern patron of the arts, a person of culture and passion who commissions works of art from the creative geniuses of our times. In this way, even the lives of those who can’t allow themselves such luxuries are enriched, in much the same way as if they were exploring the halls and corridors of a museum.

The 19-foot-long, 750 horsepower Mercedes-Maybach Vision 6 Cabriolet runs on electric motors, and is able to accelerate to 60 mph in under 4 seconds. Each wheel gets its own electric motor that draws power from the battery that comprises the car’s underbody. The roadster is a navy blue that according to Mercedes helps evoke the feeling of a yacht - more so than the size already did. This is a decadently long vehicle, stretching the tape measure to 5.7m - giving it mega road presence, especially with the 24-inch alloy wheels and a bonnet so long you’ll barely see the Californian horizon as you waft along the Pacific Coast Highway. The interior of the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet features white leather seats that blend into the doors and dashboard. It has the wild wraparound display and clear center tunnel with light tubes that show the flow of electricity to the motors. Metal highlights are finished in rose gold hue, as is the stitching. The design even offers up custom suitcases along with umbrellas and dinnerware - all of which is comfortably tucked beneath the storage space of the lengthy hood. The car uses biometrics to check the health and mood of both passengers, and there’s a new, more free-form voice command system said to allow for more natural speech. Naturally, the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 will probably never make its way into full-blown production mode, but perhaps Benz will utilise some of the concept’s stylish cues in the years ahead.

AVIATION AIRBUS IS PROPOSING A NEW SOLUTION FOR AVOIDING RUSH HOUR: FLY OVER IT.

Part-car part-drone by Airbus www.airbus.com

Airbus, a company best known for building airplanes, has partnered with the car company Italdesign and unveiled its vision for a car that can be airlifted by a drone. Called Pop.Up, the modular system consist of a two-seater capsule that functions as a car or can be carried to the rider’s destination by a vertical take-off and landing air vehicle we could see on the streets in 2030, when traffic in the metropolis could become unmanageable.

Honda Aircraft Company has recreated the business jet from the ground up with a truly clean sheet design. By mounting engines over the wing, designing Natural Laminar Flow for the wing and fuselage, and applying other innovations, the HondaJet outperforms all other aircraft in its class. The culmination of cutting-edge innovation makes the HondaJet the world’s most advanced light business jet. The HondaJet design incorporates a number of innovations that were developed through extensive research conducted by Honda.

AVIATION The HondaJet cockpit is built for optimum safety based on thoughtful ergonomic design and state-of-the-art situational awareness. First, it gives the pilot more space and greater visibility; next, fewer intrusions and more intuition. Garmin® G3000 next-generation all-glass avionics system brings pilot and aircraft closer together with touch-screen technology. The dual touch-screen controllers and three 14-inch landscape high-resolution displays offer enhanced navigation, flight planning and control.

These include the patented HondaJet Over-The-Wing Engine Mount (OTWEM) configuration, Natural Laminar Flow wing and nose, and composite fuselage structure. These advanced technologies allow the HondaJet to achieve the highest speed (422 knots at FL300), highest altitude (43,000 feet), and best fuel efficiency (up to 17 percent for a typical mission) in its class. • A patented Over-The-Wing Engine Mount (OTWEM) configuration was developed using advanced concepts in aerodynamics and design simulation. The OTWEM configuration eliminates the carry-through structure of conventional fuselage-mount designs, allowing for greater use of fuselage space for the cabin and external cargo areas. The configuration is also designed to reduce cabin noise. By optimization of the design and placement of the engine nacelles, the HondaJet OTWEM configuration actually exhibits less drag at high speeds than conventional “clean wing” designs, contributing significantly to the aircraft’s superior performance and efficiency. • A Natural Laminar Flow (NLF) wing and fuselage nose were developed through extensive analyses and wind tunnel testing. These designs help achieve lower aerodynamic drag at high speeds together with a high lift coefficient. • An advanced, composite fuselage structure, consisting of a unique combination of honeycomb stiffened-panel structures joined using a patented integral co- curing process, reduces weight for optimal performance and payload capacity, while also reducing manufacturing complexity. • Honda partnered with Garmin to develop the first highly automated avionics suite. HondaJet has a sophisticated flight deck with three 14-inch landscape displays and two touchscreen controllers that allow pilots enhanced navigation, flight planning and system control.

THE JAPANESE-INSPIRED KYOTO AIRSHIP DESIGN RESULTED FROM A COLLABORATION BETWEEN JAY BEEVER, EMBRAER EXECUTIVE JETS’ SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT OF INTERIOR DESIGN, YACHT INTERIOR DESIGNER PATRICK KNOWLES AND BOAT INTERNATIONAL. THE CHALLENGE WAS TO PROVE WE COULD PROVIDE A SIMILAR DESIGN EXPERIENCE TO THE ONE YOU WOULD GET WHEN DESIGNING A YACHT. DESIGNING A MOTORYACHT OFTEN ALLOWS THE OWNER TO CUSTOMIZE TO THE ULTIMATE DEGREE. WE FEEL WE CAN OFFER A SIMILAR EXPERIENCE WITH THE KYOTO AIRSHIP. The unique design offers passengers an experience that is similar to traveling on a yacht, rethinking convention with door-sized windows and skylights that arc from the floor to the ceiling. Beever said the design team imagined a hypothetical Japanese customer who might want to sit on the floor instead of a traditional seat. In developing the new concept, his team drew on the technical specs of an ERJ-145 regional jet, which has large observer windows the company designed for use by the Brazilian government. Embraer Executive Jets is ready to build this extraordinary aircraft for a Lineage 1000E customer who wants to experience the future of private air travel. The ultra-large Lineage 1000E offers five cabin zones in hundreds of configurations. That’s true versatility - a challenge to convention made all the more compelling by low acquisition and operating costs, and the capacity to negotiate restrictive airports (Teterboro, Aspen, London City) as well as flights within a range of 4,600 nm. Within the expanse of its 84-ft-long by 6-ft-7-in-high cabin, you can tailor your flight experience to your mission needs — whether working,

dining, relaxing, or sleeping. The optional master suite features a walk-in shower and a large bed. Food and beverage service standards are elevated by a fully equipped two-sided galley. And the 323-cu-ft walk-in baggage compartment - complemented by a 120-cu-ft external compartment - is the largest in business aviation. This spacious setting - 2.5 times larger than that of an ultra-long-range jet - is further enhanced by the fully digital Honeywell Ovation® Select cabin management system, which offers passengers a broad range of cabin entertainment, control and integrated communications that maximize in-flight comfort and productivity. In the fly-by-wire cockpit, a Honeywell Primus Epic avionics system reduces pilot workload while enhancing safety, handling, and performance. Exceptional reliability has been established by millions of flight hours logged on the Lineage 1000E and E-Jets platform, which features GE engines with high fuel efficiency and a modular design for efficient replacement of components. In fact, the Lineage 1000E boasts operating costs comparable to much smaller ultra-long-range jets. All of which adds up to luxury for less. This Lineage 1000E concept takes air travel to new heights.

For over 80 years, engineers have tried to incorporate the unique advantage of vertical take-off into aeroplanes. Elytron Aircraft LLC of Mountain View, California is developing the Elytron, a small aircraft that uses a box wing configuration and is aimed at the civilian market. The Elytron family of aircraft is designed to provide the vertical takeoff and landing capability of helicopters combined with the speed and efficiency advantages of fixed wing aircraft. The ‘5S’ model, which is designed to hold a pilot and up to four passengers. Soaring through skies at over 480 km/h, it could transport people from a heliport in Glasgow to one in London in as little as 69 minutes. The aircraft is a new take on tilt rotor configuration that incorporates an unconventional wing design to create a hybrid aircraft with greater performance. The main wings of the aircraft have a high aspect ratio and are very light which reduces the drag thus minimising the risk of rotor strikes. The firm is working with Nasa to test a scaled version of its aircraft concept, at Nasa’s Ames Research Centre in California.

Space Vegas was originally done very rapidly as part of pre-production for Luc Besson’s movie Valarian and the City of a Thousand planets. The director rejected the work outright as not being right for the film, but allowed me to keep it and show it. The buses are based on the Skylon spaceplane. The idea behind the orbital city is that it grew from what was the international Space Station in a way analogous to how a frontier town grows on earth; as new modules were added year after year and decade after decade, it grew from a hamlet to a village, to a town and finally into a sprawling, chaotic megacity. Alex Brady imagined zoning laws might only allow growth in particular directions (which was really a way of making sure the overall object had a dynamic shape!) with highest density and exclusivity at the ISS end. Think Manhatten’s giant towers, with the city gradually blending into the outer boroughs and suburbs of NYC.The designer wanted to make it a vibrant place where new town-sized modules were being added all the time, and people from accross the galaxy came to live, work, study and gamble!

The first western shipbuilding group and the renowned brand of Italian automotive design have developed a joint project. Named after the Italian word for 85 (its length in meters), the inimitable concept combines Fincantieris 230 years of experience (having built over 7,000 boats) and Pininfarinas elegance and sophisticated style. The entire project is a merge of simplicity and functionality, innovation and style, elements which are the pillars of the idea of technological beauty.

CONCEPT YACHT

“Ottantacinque” is the ambition of creating an Italian mega yacht, technologically advanced, with essential lines, comfortable and of absolute beauty: a meeting of excellences, able to express creativity, luxury and Italian manufacture to the utmost. Partnering two Italian powerhouses, the 279-foot Fincantieri Ottantacinque yacht concept designed by Pininfarina is sure to be a modern maritime masterpiece when built. Among the most significant details is the coupled twin pools on the main deck that are raised almost flushed with the side. Together with an elevated sun bed, the deck will have uninterrupted views of the sea. The pool will have an adjustable bottom, so the water depth can

be varied and even raised to the top to create a large open platform spanning over 160 square meters. “Ottantacinque” is an ambitious project, that aims to bring attention to Italian yacht design with technological advances and contemporary lines. “Ottantacinque” will have a top speed of 18 knots delivered by twin diesel engines, with a range of 6,000 nautical miles at 12 knots. She will cruise with 19 crew. With “Ottantacinque”, added Giovanni Romano, Director of Fincantieri Yachts, the goal was to work “to the development of new products that make it possible to meet, with the same high quality, the needs of owners who require smaller units than 100 meters “.

Oliver Stacey Design & BMT Nigel Gee Present Project Norse www.bmtng.com

The UK-based superyacht young but experienced designer Oliver Stacey Design collaborates with the marine engineering design consultancy BMT Nigel Gee on Project Norse, an 80 metre sail-assisted exploration yacht. The long and robust keel flat, with shallow draft coupled with a high degree of manoeuvrability allows this rugged trans-oceanic exploration vessel to reach both Poles. Inspired by the Viking Voyagers exhibition at the National Maritime Museum in Falmouth, specifically by the extensive range and endurance of the longboat, this yacht concept seems to bring the Viking adventure spirit right into the 21st century. “When we were initially looking for a conceptual thread for the design, I had recently seen the Viking Voyagers exhibition at the National Maritime Museum in Falmouth”, explains designer Oliver Stacey.“The extensive range and endurance of the longboat. The adventuring spirit of the Vikings. The use of sail as a secondary power source. These are the inspirational reference points which led to the development of Project Norse.” The yacht’s simple, low-aspect sail plan features three identical wing masts, in combination with matched in-boom furling mainsails. This configuration maximises reliability and flexibility, while requiring minimum crew effort in deployment, operation and recovery. It is anticipated that the sail-assist

mode will be utilised for the majority of the yacht’s passage making and that, under optimum conditions, power can be regenerated through the trailing shaft-lines to battery storage. Norse explorer yacht acts as an activity basecamp for a wide range of sea, land, and air based activities. Capable of voyaging to both Poles without effort, while keeping passengers happy and amazed, this unique concept provides maximum self-sustainability and an incredible global range, with minimal environmental impact. Project Norse is based on the principle of a sail assisted hybrid propulsion system, which seems to mix the best of both worlds. It’s a boat designed to go exploring and to explore in a way that uses the wind.“Norse is a hybrid diesel-electric motoryacht that uses the wind as a secondary source of power,” says Stacey.“Sail-assist is a readily available technology that in the right conditions can save on fuel consumption by 20 per cent or more.” To further the sense of exploration, its flat keel and shallow draft offer it access to waters way too shallow for other ships of its size. An extensive tender garage hides an array of support adventure vehicles, including tenders, ATVs, submarines and snow mobiles. Heck, it even sports a gantry strong enough to launch and recover seaplanes up to 39 feet in wingspan. In contempt of its explorative purpose, internally, Norse offers a social living environment with an informal layout for 12 persons; the owner lives close to family members and guests, who share large open-plan spaces. James Roy, BMT Nigel Gee’s Yacht Design Director, said: “Despite outward appearances, this is not a sailing yacht; at a time when hybrid is a buzz word in our industry, we couldn’t move away from the unmistakable truth that sail assistance is the ultimate hybrid.”

The SV12 provided the base for the highly anticipated Aeroboat S6, a 65ft yacht with excellent use of space above and below deck. A grand cabin forward with expansive windows can be transformed into a master suite for owners, while the shower room, dayhead and galley have proportions more typical of larger yachts. The main passageway provides access to a further cabin and a tender garage for storing a 3.8m tender or a couple of Jetskis.

Aeroboat S6 powered by Rolls-Royce

Aeroboat is a quintessential British brand of stylish power boats. The Aeroboat is Claydon Reeves’ answer to anyone seeking a boat combining speed and contemporary elegance; a heady combination of old-school romance and modern-day technology. Inspired by the British World War II fighter plane, the Spitfire, the Aeroboat preserves the purity of this

beloved aircraft. Core to our concept is the renowned original Rolls Royce Merlin engine that powers the Aeroboat. The supercharged Merlin V12 engine with its bespoke gearbox and final drive can be specified in arious states of tune from 1500hp up to 2500hp giving rise to speeds in excess of an astonishing 75 knots. 203

The fluid lines of the original plane combined with modern automotive features inspired the design. This can be visualised in the sensual form language of the stern echoing the wing’s trailing edge, the sweeping tail, and the authentic air intake scoop. Yet this is also a distinctly contemporary yacht design using carbon fibre, Kevlar and lightweight wood veneers. The cockpit can be configured to an individual’s demands, comfortably accommodating four to six passengers. The forward seats are a unique shock- mounted design inspired by the Spitfire landing gear. The helmsman has the use of a combination of analogue gauges for basic functions and touch-screen navigational systems. Dominating the helmsman’s controls is the joystick-inspired throttle. This is indisputably not your average tender but of course it could be carried on a superyacht. The Aeroboat is ideal for anyone seeking a fast, stylish day boat who might choose to breakfast in Antibes, lunch in St Tropez and dine in Les Hyères. Claydon Reeves plan to build a limited edition of Aeroboats tailored to the personal requirements of each client from cockpit layout and interior trim to engine specifications and exterior finishes. Claydon Reeves is an enthusiastic team of personalities who share over 30 years of experience in the superyacht industry. Our sole aim is the creation of unique and progressive designs through a tailored and flexible process. Unrestrained by the limitations of traditional precedents we are looking ahead to develop yachts that endure far into the future.

A Benetti signed Romero

www. benettiyachts.it

The nautical design has a special evolution, it is basking for long periods of stasis where, rather than real news, it is referred to restyling and refreshments of beauty canons, which the whole world thinks current at that historic moment. Then, very rarely, every twenty years or more, there are real leaps forward. They are quantum leaps, which simply are so high that they make the “classic” immediately appear all that is ahead of them. The last jump forward dates back to more than twenty years ago and it can no doubt be attributed to the couple Brenta - Bressani who, both in sailing and in the engine, doubly difficult, has introduced such pure and refined lines that, all the rest has aged instantly of one hundred years. Even today, many of us, perhaps forgetting the origins of these traits, abuse the word “innovation” by referring to boats that, if carefully observed, obviously rewrite the lines of the Wally Power series. Benetti, the world’s largest superyacht builder, has been in business since 1873, and roughly 30 superyachts in various stages of production at its shipyards are generally traditional designs, with a growing number of custom yachts. The long premise is absolutely necessary to understand the scope of the event at the opening of the Monaco Yacht Show, we have witnessed what is undoubtedly the new leap forward in the nautical design history, Benetti Se77antasette — or “77” in Italian. The yard says that the mega yacht will have distinct, flowing lines and eschew any sort of rigidity in appearance. Even the yacht’s radar systems will be hidden from view inside of a glass dome, which Benetti says will have no effect on the equipment’s ability to function. “The biggest disadvantage was to make an excellent product even better” - declared satisfied Vincenzo Poerio, CEO of Benetti Yachts. “If the identity of our yard was already universally assimilated to that of a sophisticated and luxurious product, with Se77antasette we raise yachting

Se77antasette is the result of Benetti’s DNA analysis and the use of the possibilities that new technologies have enabled, thus allowing to create a new “yachting experience”. The sinuous lines and adjoining spaces have created an uninterrupted ecosystem, sophisticating it with programs and connectivity.

to a dimension we had never seen before, a perfect union between the two different worlds of yachting and civil architecture, mixing Romero’s capabilities and Benetti’s experience” Se77antasette stands out for the extreme adaptability of its spaces depending on the requirements on board. The stern entrance, with three full openings, transforms itself into an immense terrace overlooking the sea, becoming an exclusive spa area dedicated entirely to rest and relaxation. Here guests can relax in the swimming pool that can convert to a full helipad on the foredeck. Designed for businessmen, the yacht also offers this area as a perfect space for organising events, presentations or meetings. Romero’s paradigm-shattering concept includes an observatory deck with more glass than any gigayacht has ever seen. In the centre of the vessel, there is an atrium that can be used as a fullyfunctioning dance floor with a DJ setup, as a formal dining area or a movie theatre. Of course, you’ll find an owner’s apartment with private alfresco space, plus other must-haves, aboard Se77antasette. There are 4 guest cabins located on the lower deck along with 2 VIP staterooms, which enjoy the additional benefits of a walk-in wardrobe and access to the private terrace via sliding glass panels that use a telescopic system. Even having tossed convention aside, Se77antasette keeps a strong focus on practical matters. This includes crew needs. In fact, Romero ensures they can access every deck and every tech area—efficiently, he emphasises. Then there’s his, and Benetti’s desire to be more fuel efficient. The megayacht makes use of proven hybrid propulsion. Benetti specifies five Caterpillar gensets coupled to azipods, driven by magnetic motors. It predicts Se77antasette seeing 5,000 nautical miles at 12 knots, and a top end of 16 knots. To see Se77antasette at sea we will just have to wait for a wealthy shipowner to fall in love with this crazy project, and then, from the day when it will be launched, boating will never be the same again.

Traditional Irish hospitality at 5-star castles Whether you’re a history buff, or just want to enjoy life in the European countryside overlooking green rolling hills, staying in a luxury castle hotel is an experience you must have at least once on your travels. It’s no surprise then that Ireland is home to some of the world’s most luxurious castles, boasting a rich & often royal history. Most of them have bones that date from as early as the 12th century, done up with artful additions and expansive new gardens by Victorians in the 1800s. A few of these magnificent properties have opened their doors to welcome discerning travellers for an unforgettable retreat. A stay in one of Ireland’s luxury castles will bring a touch of old-world style to your summer vacation. 270

When you first see Ashford Castle, an 800-year-old construction of gray stone and turrets rising up on the shores of Lough Corrib, “friendly” is probably not the first word that comes to mind. But what makes this castle extraordinary is just that: it is medieval, magnificent, meticulously restored—and friendly. This was, after all, home to the Guinness family for nearly 70 years. Now, after decades of neglect and disrepair, the castle is part of a family again, and its top-to-bottom restoration recently brought it vibrantly back to life. An epic €75m restoration in 2015 brought the magical setting back to its former glory, and this year the castle was awarded one of the most prestigious titles in Irish hospitality when it was named hotel of the year at the annual AA Hospitality Awards. The rooms are massive and opulently furnished for a start and offer breathtaking views of Lough Corrib which stuns when it sparkles in the sunshine - although the sparkles are never guaranteed in the West what with all the rain and everything. With 82 guest rooms, a wealth of activities and thoughtful touches, enjoy acclaimed Irish hospitality on a grand scale. There is also one of the best buffet breakfasts in the world, buggy rides around the grounds, a falconry where birds of prey eat raw meat off your hands, golf - obviously - tennis, fishing, hunting, lake cruises and all the rest. Ashford Castle is, once again, a fairytale castle and a majestic gateway to the delights of the Ireland’s fabled west.
