A SCENT THE MOST INFLUENTIAL STYLE IN THE FIRST HALF OF THE 20TH CENTURY TO BE REMEMBERED Harrods London celebrated the opening of its Salon de Parfum with a spritz of “the world’s most expensive perfume.”

For the opening of Harrods London’s new Salon de Parfum boutique, British perfumer Clive Christian, OBE, created a special edition of his No. 1 perfume with a one-ofa-kind packaging, by covering the brand’s signature crystal bottle with hand-crafted, 24 carat gold lattice-work and adorning it with 2000 diamonds. What’s more is that the lion figure on the front of the bottle was made up of two yellow diamonds, and the lion’s tongue had a rare pink diamond on it. The special edition was named No. 1 Passant Guardant. A standard bottle of the fragrance is marketed as ‘the world’s most expensive perfume’. But the one-off edition that feted the opening of Harrods’ Salone de Parfum, located on the sixth floor of the London department store, genuinely In the motion picture, “The Great Gatsby”, the exterior of Jay Gatsby’s mansion was inspired by the International College of Management, deserved the superlative title. RISE OF THE ROARING TWENTIES Home construction boomed in suburban developments during the 1920s and 1930s in the United States and Western Europe. The traditional choice evolved from the earlier Arts & Crafts era characterised by romance and decoration, and one of the architectural styles that emerged in the U.S. was Tu-

The day of the week is spelled out in full. Since its debut in 1956, the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Day-Date watch was a major innovation. It was the first wristwatch to indicate, in addition to the date, the day of the week spelled out in full in an arc-shaped window at the 12 o’clock marker. This was available in a selection of 26 languages. The Day-Date watch models were made only in precious metals like 18-karat yellow, white and everose gold or 950 platinum. This ‘watch of

prestige’was known for its exceptional precision, reliability and readability. It featured a unique ‘President’ bracelet with semi-circular three-piece links. Its popularity among the wrists of political figures, filmmakers and entrepreneurs ensured its popularity as ‘The President’s Watch.’ Now, Rolex presents a new generation of this iconic model with a novel design and stylistic variations. This new model includes an exquisite variant in 18-karat yellow gold with a green ombré dial embellished with brilliant-cut and baguette-cut diamond hour markers and framed with a futted bezel. The case features a Cyclops lens at the three o’clock marker and scratch- resistant sapphire crystal.

OUR ECONOMIC BOUNCEBACK ON THE HORIZON

Though few of us today are old enough to remember the first decades of the 20th century, the annals of history tell us that World War I - the “war to end all wars” took 20 million lives, and that same decade, the Spanish Flu swept through the globe claiming 50 million lives. But what followed were the Roaring Twenties, an astonishing recovery as the war came to its end and the Spanish Flu entered its third wave. Sounds almost familiar? The summer of 2020 saw people returning to beaches and shopping streets as lockdown lifted. Some degree of normalcy resumed, until the second wave, of course. Will much-suffered sectors, such as retail, experience an economic bounceback like the Roaring Twenties? A particular cohort, Gen-Z, born between 1997 and 2012, currently 40 percent of global consumers accounting for $150 billion spent in the United States alone, according to McKinsey & Company, will become a consumer powerhouse by 2035, as Bain & Company estimate that Gen-Z spending could amount to 40 percent of the global market. Online sales in the second quarter rose 45% compared to the same time last year in the U.S., tripling recent growth. E-commerce looms greater than ever before. Brands of the future will be the ones that know not only how to leverage social media, but also maximise other consumer engagement techniques.

THE PRESIDENT’S WATCH, INSIDE AND OUT THE NEW DAY-DATE HOUSES A NEW MOVEMENT KNOWN FOR ITS PRECISION, SHOCK RESISTANCE, RELIABILITY AND SUPERLATIVE PERFORMANCE. The new Oyster Perpetual Day-Date 36 is equipped with a new generation self-winding mechanical movement with a Calibre 3255 that has been entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex and incorporates the brand’s Chonergy escapement, known for its high energy efficiency and dependability, which permits a power reserve of approximately 70 hours. This movement has been fitted with a blue Parachrom hairspring, another Rolex exclusive, this paramagnetic alloy improves precision in comparison to traditional hairsprings regardless of the position. The watch’s oscillator also features the brand’s hallmark Paraflex shock absorbers that further increase the model’s shock resistance. This movement is enclosed in a 36-mm Oyster case, synonymous with waterproofness and guaranteed to a depth of 100 meters. The case, which is hermetically screwed down by Rolex watchmakers to secure the movement, is crafted from a solid block of 18-karat yellow gold.

THE COSMOPOLITAN WATC H PAR EXCELLEN CE

A NEW GENERATION OF A WATCHMAKING ICON Over the years the GMT-Master has become one of Rolex’s most legendary icons. This model was first introduced in 1955 and was originally designed to help pilots during navigation. The GMT-Master became the official watch of Pan American World Airways, and was used as a navigation aid by the captain of Pan Am’s first non-stop flight from New York to Moscow in 1959. This was later immortalised on the cover of Time Magazine.

The Oyster case is a symbol of waterproofness. It is a paragon of robustness and reliability, guaranteed to a depth of 100 metres (330 feet) providing optimum protection for the MGTMaster II’s high-precision movement.

WWW.ROLEX.COM Rolex presents a new version of the GMT-Master II. The watch, originally introduced in 1955, has become one of their iconic models. With the rapid expansion of intercontinental travel, the GMT-Master II was designed to aid pilots in navigation with a 2-tone, 24hour bezel that made it easier to tell time in two different time zones. The new version is available in Oystersteel case and 5-link Jubilee bracelet. Meticulous care and attention have been given to the design of Rolex bracelets and clasps. Function and form blend so that the features offered by each model embody Rolex aesthetic codes. Rounded edges, polished or satin-finished surfaces, safety clasps or concealed clasps, effortless systems for adjusting the bracelet length to perfectly fit the wrist: the quest for comfort, elegance and reliability knows no bounds. Rolex bracelets are

2

highly distinctive, and each is identifiable by its unique forms, aesthetic codes and style. The Jubilee bracelet is a supple and comfortable 5-piece link metal bracelet designed specially for the launch of the Oyster Perpetual Datejust in 1945. It is fitted with an Oysterclasp or a Crownclasp, the concealed clasp. The GMT-Master II is also powered by a brand new movement: the new-generation Caliber 3285. Ten patent applications were filed over the course of the development of this movement. It combines precision, power reserve, resistance to shocks and magnetism, convenience and reliability in a timepiece. Rolex’s Chronergy escapement is an enhanced version of the Swiss lever escapement, and is the result of extensive research that led to a new design of the pallet fork and escape wheel. The two redesigned components are

made of nickel-phosphorus, an alloy that makes them resistant to magnetic interference. The escape wheel has a cut-out design to make it lighter and reduce its inertia. Thanks to this innovative geometry, the efficiency of the escapement, which continues to provide optimum reliability and resistance, is improved by 15%. The self-winding mechanical movement via a Perpetual rotor is the culmination of Rolex’s watchmaking expertise by finding the best solution to a problem that had long concerned watchmakers – that of how to ensure constant tension in the barrel without having to manually wind the watch. The Rolex technical team adapted the self-winding system to the wristwatch with a rotor pivoting freely 360 degrees without jolting. After years of research and development to achieve a reliable and efficient result, Rolex presented the Perpetual

rotor in 1931. A particularly dense tungsten alloy is used, ensuring a rotor with excellent dynamic properties in spite of its small dimensions. The centre of gravity of the oscillating weight must also be as peripheral as possible, and its motion can never be impeded by the movement or the case. The watch has to be wound as quickly as possible, without being overwound. The new GMT-Master II has a power reserve of up to 70 hours. Its Oyster case is waterproof to a depth of 100 metres. It also has a bi-directional bezel with 24-hour graduated two-tone Cerachrom insert in red and blue ceramic which is virtually scratchproof, nonfading and highly legible. The bezel is one of the most visible parts of a watch and one of the most exposed to shocks, scratches, corrosion and other environmental factors. With the robustness

and durability of its watches in mind, Rolex developed and patented the Cerachrom bezel insert and the Cerachrom bezel. The basic ceramic material is a very fine zirconium dioxide or aluminium oxide powder, whose particles are less than one micron (onethousandth of a millimetre) in diameter. It is mixed with organic binding agents that allow it to be moulded and pigments that will give the final desired colour. The raw material, which at this point has very low resistance, is shaped by high-pressure moulding to create a blank. This step gives the piece its shape and moulds the numerals, graduations and inscriptions, whether they are indented or raised. Once the blank is removed from the mould, it undergoes a heat treatment to remove the binding agents. It is then fired at a very high temperature – up to 1,600°C

– in a process known as sintering, during which the ceramic acquires its definitive hardness and mechanical resistance. Its resistance after the sintering is akin to that of steel, but its hardness is much greater. During firing and sintering, the piece contracts by approximately 25 to 30 per cent and acquires its final colour or colours. The durable, high-technology ceramic components retain their beauty and functionality even in the most extreme conditions. Since 2005, Rolex has mastered the use of ceramic allowing the brand to equip their watches with cutting-edge ceramic bezel inserts and a varied color palette. The new GMT-Master II is a nod to the original colours of the first GMT-Master from 1955, with Chromalight hands and hour markers, as wellas an arrow-tipped red lacquered 24-hour hand that keeps track of home time.

ALFA ROMEO’S BEST PRE-WAR RACE CAR

This 1934 Alfa Romeo Tipo B P3, sold for over €3.9 million at the RM Sotheby’s auction in Paris on 8 February 2017, is an extremely authentic example with well-documented ownership history. It was one of three vehicles originally with Dubonnet independent front suspension and reversed quarter-elliptical leaf springs. Arguably Alfa Romeo’s best pre-war race car, it was campaigned by Scuderia Ferrari during the 1934 and 1935 Grand Prix seasons, and was driven by racing luminaries including Tazio Nuvolari and Rene Dreyfus. The Tipo B P3 houses a 255 bhp 2,905 cc DOHC supercharged inline eight-cylinder engine, three-speed manual transmission.

In late 1931, Alfa Romeo engineer Vittorio Jano began designing a new Grand Prix car to compete with the latest models from Bugatti and Maserati. While a 2.6-litre version of Alfa’s successful inline eight-cylinder was chosen as a powerplant, Jano sought a more purpose-built chassis and body than the sports car-style Monza spiders. Using the two-seat P2 Grand Prix car as a foundation, he engineered an extremely light chassis, which he mounted with new centreline slipper-style single-seat coachwork that placed the driver at the car’s exact centre, for ideal weight distribution. The resulting Tipo B, or P3, was noteworthy, as it was the first Grand Prix car to feature monoposto coachwork configuration. Weighing just 701 kilograms, the Tipo B was immediately successful during the 1932 season, as the legendary Tazio Nuvolari won the Monza Grand Prix, and team cars took 1-2-3 finishes at the French and German Grand Prix. Six initial Tipo B examples were built with the original 1932 specifications. Chassis number 50006 is the sixth example of the seven second-series wide-body cars, and one of three originally fitted with the Dubonnet suspension and reversed quarter-elliptical leaf springs (as opposed to being converted by

4

the factory following initial manufacture). Stamped with Scuderia Ferrari number 46, this car interchangeably participated in the campaigns of 1935 with the other Tipo B cars. Thanks to a remarkable unbroken chain of documented ownership, chassis 50006 is confirmed to retain almost all factory-original components. It is truly remarkable that in the car’s 80-plus year history, it was never derelict nor neglec-

It has remained intact all its life and was never rebuilt from an assemblage of parts or discarded for years on end. This rare and extremely authentic Tipo B offers discerning collectors an opportunity to acquire an important intersection of the history of Alfa Romeo and the Scuderia Ferrari, as well as one of the earliest monoposto Grand Prix cars ever built.

As the need for safer travels continues to increase, flight charters have witnessed a surge in demand this year. Private jet companies, yacht charter operators, and luxury hospitality brands, hotels and resorts are teaming up to offer exclusive travellers more flexible packages and more peace of mind than ever before. From daycations nearby to extended getaways, private travels have gone far beyond the limits of business trips and have become a highly customisable option for those leaving home for leisure. Badrutt’s Palace’s jet service and the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection are some of the many choices available.

THE HEART OF THE M AT T E R

“GRAND DAME OF SWITZERLAND” TAKES LUXURY TO THE NEXT LEVEL

The “Heart of the Ocean“ necklace in the film, Titanic, drew inspirations from the Hope Diamond.

Mankind’s fascination with ancient diamonds was spotlighted on the silverscreen when the film, Titanic, featured a necklace coined the “Heart of the Ocean”, whose setting brought to mind the Hope Diamond. Despite the parallels which the motion picture drew with the legendary gem, the real facts documented by the Smithsonian Institute, in possession of the rare stone since 1958, nonetheless confirm an interesting past which must have inspired the Hollywood script. The Hope Diamond most likely came from the Kollur mine in Golconda, India. It was purchased by French merchant Jean Baptiste Tavernier, who then sold it to King Louis XIV of France in 1668. The “Blue Diamond of The Palace in the Air’s easy check-in process, swift flight time and the 30-seat Dornier 328 jet ushered in a new era for Badrutt’s Palace and the Crown” was stolen du- its guests. Primed for the future, it always offers guests something new, with its signature impeccable attention to detail, like the new Palace In The Air. Badrutt’s Palace launched its first-ever self-branded plane, which took its inaugural flight on 14 February 2020, from London Stansted Airport’s

A journey from classic architecture to cityscapes Photography has undergone a major revolution with digital technology and social media in recent years, yet few can truly say they possess a photographer’s ‘eye’ to capture that impeccable shot that can transmit emotion and awe spectators. However, as amateur photography continues to rise, few individuals take the extra steps required, as with all trades and crafts to refine talent and hone in on a specialisation. Christophe Buiron, 58-year-old French amateur photographer delved

into the world of photography five years ago and has not turned back. Living close to Paris gives him one of the most ‘picturesque’ settings where he can utilise his camera to unleash creativity. His passion for photography has taken him behind the lens and onto post-production of digital photography. Once again, dedication and practice have refined his skills to highlight, or as he says,“sublimate photos.” As Buiron continues his exploration of cities capturing their architectural marvels, in the future he wishes to extend his passion to portraiture and black and white street photography. “Street photography,” he explains, “forces you to be more creative, capturing a fugitive instant and taking more care of composition, subject and light.”

BADRUTT’S PALACE TAKES TO THE SKIES

Harrods Aviation private jet terminal to Samedan St. Moritz. The 30-seater Dornier 328 jet celebrated the centennial anniversary of the first flight between London and St. Moritz. Exactly 100 years ago, on 14 February 1920, Swiss pilot and aviation pioneer Alfred Comte completed an unprecedented flight from Switzerland to the

UK. His departure point? The iconic St. Moritz lake right in front of the hotel. Today, on-board passengers can enjoy dedicated services by Badrutt’s Palace staff and in-flight catering during the 1-hour-and-45-minute journey from London to the hotel in St. Moritz. The service is the beginning of an on-going trial by the hotel

to potentially offer other direct flights from key destinations during peak times for both guests of the hotel and visitors to the wider Engadin region. The easy checkin process - available up to 45 minutes prior to departure - short flight time and seamless experience make it a stress-free journey to the Swiss resort.

THE FASCINATION FOR DIAMONDS LIVES ON

When the Hope Diamond was removed from its setting in 1974, its weight turned out to be 45.54 carats, instead of 44.5 reported for many years. Classified as a Type 2B diamond, the Hope Diamond’s blue colour comes from trace amounts of boron in the stone, but what makes it so intense is that it phosphorescens a strong red colour, evident after exposure to short wave ultra-violet light. In 1988 the Gemological Institute of America visited the Smithsonian to grade the Hope Diamond. Once described by Tavernier as having “a beautiful violet”, the Hope Diamond’s intriguing colour is officially known as “fancy dark grayish blue” as a result of the grading using modern techniques, but Tavernier was not wrong: there is a very slight violet component to the deep blue which the naked eye cannot discern. So, what’s in a name of a diamond? Graff gives name to our love for exceptional diamonds with the Fascination (pictured on the opposite page), a $40-million convertible watch. The bracelet timepiece features a removable part that can be worn as a ring. Surrounded by 152.96 carats of white diamonds, the 38.13-carat D Flawless pear-shaped diamond in the centre has a fancy cut which has been cut and polished in Graff workshops. The central gem can be removed from the watch and becomes a ring. Founder and chairman of Graff Diamonds Laurence Graff expressed that the Fascination was carefully crafted so that it could be worn in a number of ways, adding a touch of magic to the jewel.

THÉÂTRE NATIONAL DE L’OPÉRA-COMIQUE EXPOSED LOUIS BERNIER’S ARCHITECTURE IS AN OPULENT HOMAGE TO MASTERS SUCH AS GARNIER AND DAUMET. Photographed by Christophe Buiron, the interiors of the Opera Comique have been described as “an interior of overbearing opulence, especially in the lavishly histrionic, gilt-dripping stuccowork of the auditorium.” And they do appear magnificently impressive in Buiron’s photographs. “Paris is my playground,” he exclaims,“but I also love travelling and discovering other great cities.” With a particular attention to cityscapes and architecture, Buiron captures palaces, churches, museums, trying as he puts it “to restitute as much as I can the beauty of those places.” Online research and books have helped Buiron, yet his greatest teacher has been practice. He has experimented with 16-35mm wide-angle lenses and zooms at 70-200 mm to best capture architectural details of his subjects.

GSTAAD

Winter Escape: The Finest Ski Destinations in Europe www.legrandmag.com

Miles of immaculate slopes Gstaad, is situated in the Berner Oberland. It is home to one of the largest ski areas in the Alps (220 km (137 mi) of slopes) and primarily known as a major ski resort and a popular destination amongst high-class society and the international jet set. The middle of the village features a picturesque Promenade bounded by numerous shops, restaurants, art galleries, and hotels. Designer labels including Louis Vuitton, Hermès, Chopard, Brunello Cucinelli, Prada, Moncler, Ralph Lauren, and Cartier all have exclusive boutiques in Gstaad. A tiny paradise for the elite..High quality services and exclusivity is what Courmayeur is all about to its visitors. This lovely old village at the foot of Mont Blanc, just beneath the entrance to the tunnel on the Italian side of the world-famous mountain, has limited piste skiing but there’s challenging off piste, superb restaurants, and a lively nightlife. It combines epic off-pistes with Italian style and a committed embrace of la vita è bella. There is nowhere quite like Cortina. A famous racing town and host of the 1956 Olympics, it certainly has some serious skiing. But it is also Italy’s most fashionable resort, and many visitors take their lunching and early-evening parading/shopping more seriously than their skiing. It might ring a bell from the 1981 James Bond film ‘For Your Eyes Only’ where Roger Moore fashionably wondered the streets of Cortina in search yet again of another villain. Undoubtedly, it takes the first place, as it has been one of the most popular ski resorts among the crême de la crême of society for decades. Its sterling reputation does not lie only to the perfectly kept and spacious pistes of Corviglia – the main ski area; immediately above the town with access to a dozen lifts and 37 pistes – but to it’s magnificent centre. From the crystal clear lake, to the finest restaurants offering Swiss delicacies and robust wine menus, to the exclusive boutiques of Hermès, Chanel, Cartier and to St Moritz’s finest five-star palace hotels such as Badrutt’s Palace towering over the frozen lake on the lower side of town. St. Moritz defines elegant ski resorts in Europe.

YACHT

THE NEW AVIVA A HOME AWAY FROM HOME At 98.4 metres, the New Aviva is the largest yacht ever built by Abeking & Rasmussen - not to mention it is also the 46th longest yacht in the world. The project was a special commission by the owner of the 68-metre Aviva, who once again turned to the German shipyard with a very special requirement when it came to the design of the yacht, it should focus on the luxury of space. The yacht was to be the owner’s primary residence and as such, volume became a priority. The New Aviva is a step up from its predecessor with bold aesthetics that incorporate research and testing for superior performance. The yacht features a hybrid drive system that silently cruises at a speed of up to 11 knots relying on environmentally friendly electric motors instead of main engines. It also boasts a 20% decrease in drag. Aviva has a maximum speed of 20 knots and requires less engine output and dramatically reduces fuel consumption. The exterior styling is by award-winning British design studio Reymond Langton Design in collaboration with Toby Silverton and features a clean hull with long horizontal lines. These linear elements convey a continuous line from the bow to the stern of the vessel emphasising the length of the yacht. The steel hull boasts a minimalist design that cleverly conceals the yacht’s spacious 5,000 GRT interior. Drawing from its predecessor, the new Aviva uses a colour scheme to visually reduce the height whilst highlight the length of the yacht. The hull in dark blue combines with the sea and contrasts with the aluminium superstructure in bright silver and dark gray that reflect the tones of the sky creating a sleek silhouette. Aviva has slightly raked windscreens to cut wind resistance and improve aerodynamics. Windscreens in the aft decks are made with seamless floor-toceiling glass windows offering guests uninterrupted views of the sea. This flow from the outside to the inside is also evident in the unique Esthec decking that has a different pattern on each deck and combines with the carpet design of the interior. The main deck features built-in furniture with a curved design and a cantilevered bar that carries onto the inside. The main, upper and third decks offer ample lounging space with

12

comfortable chairs and sun pads. A swimming platform opens onto the sea to create a beach club area. The decks also incorporate lighting into the aft walls that flow to the interior of the yacht. This voluminous 98-metre yacht accommodates 12 guests and a crew of 35. Its flowing interiors make way for rooms that are larger than vessels of a similar size. One of its highlights is a large family lounge that opens onto the exterior on three sides for spectacular views. With a height of 2.6 metres, this lounge is functional, bright and airy furnished with plush sofas, a game table and a sculptural piano. The interior design boasts modern aesthetics and curved lines with a rich combination of leather and lacquer in warm, neutral tones. Some spaces are grand while others provide intimate setting for dinner or meetings. Aviva’s master suite is located in the nose of the main deck and is complete with a monolithic Corian bathtub with accents in bronze and marble. Aviva’s interiors had to incorporate an essential element: a full-sized padel tennis court. The owner, British “Aviva is the result of the highest workmanship and best communication between the owner and his team during the short period of less than three years.” - Till von Krause, Abeking & Rasmussen

businessman Joe Lewis, practically lives on the yacht and when it comes to exercise his preference lies in padel, or as he says, “if you haven’t tried it you should, you play in doubles and closer than normal tennis so there is quite a bit on banter going on and it’s a fast game.” The inclusion of a six-metre-high, 20 by 10 metre padel tennis court was a must and certainly not an easy feat. To complicate the design further, the court should not be evident until guests are taken to it. This special request was accommodated by fitting the court into the widest point of the hull, on the double bottom right between the engine room and the accommodation of the crew. The court required heavy, thick steelwork and the correct type of astro-turf to permit the ball to bounce properly without compromising layout, quality or size. As an additio-

nal feature, by removing the padel net, the court becomes a large sports hall that can be used to play football or as an exercise room. Aviva’s tenders and toys, including a 14-metre dayboat are stowed on the lower deck and feature Abeking & Rasmussen’s tender launching system midship and portside with two 6-metre rescue boats on the bridge deck. Additional amenities include at anchor stabilisers, underwater lights, on deck Jacuzzi, beach club, swimming platform and bathing platform. However, perhaps the greatest challenge for this project was timing. The design of the entire yacht was completed in only six months.

Second Time’s The Charm A yacht is always a special purchase, turning to the same shipyard for your second yacht makes quite the statement, yet that is the story of the New Aviva. Based on the 68-metre Aviva, this new yacht boasts a sleek profile and spacious interiors. The full-sized paddle court measuring 20 by 10 metres and with a height of 6.5 metres was an essential requirement. It was a personal request of the owner and it had to be a permanent indoor structure that did not take away attention from the rest of the elements of the yacht. This eliminated moveable open-air courts from the drawing table and required careful planning. It proved challenging both in terms of design and structure yet the court was successfully incorporated into the design without compromising layout, quality or size to the full satisfaction of its owner.

Upon delivery, Till von Krause, Sales Director at Abeking and Rasmussen commented, “we are very proud to present our latest superyacht ‘AVIVA.’ This is the result of [the] highest workmanship and best communication between the owner and his team during the short period of less than three years.” Aviva has set a milestone in Abeking & Rasmussen’s yacht building history with its large size that majestically brings together hydrodynamics, performance, elegance and functionality. Since its delivery it has earned the 2018 World Superyacht Award and the Boat International Design and Innovation Award.

SUPERB HOSPITALITY AT AMAN VENICE HOTEL Set in the 16th-century Papadopoli Palazzo on the Grand Canal, the Aman Venice Hotel is the epitome of a luxury hotel. The building comprises museum-quality treasures including frescoes by Tiepolo, Rococo and Neo-Renaissance accents, gilded ceilings and centuries-old leather wall coverings. One of the eight great Venetian palazzo, and the only one with two private gardens, this exquisite hotel has 24 superbly decorated rooms overlooking the private garden or the Grand Canal. The Signature Rooms contain contemporary furnishings with a few key period pieces, authentic silk wall coverings, chandeliers, chinoiserie, painted ceilings and wood paneling, featuring artworks by 16th-century architect Sansovino and 18th-century painter Tiepolo. The 97sqm Grand Canal Suite features a separate sitting room and magnificent views of the Grand Canal through the filigreed, arched window, separate bedroom with king-size bed, bathroom with dressing area, and more. The Alcova Tiepolo Suite overlooking the garden terrace spotlights a separate sitting room and bedroom with remarkable frescoes by Tiepolo, tall windows and marble fireplaces. The Stanza Sansovino, originally ‘The Hall of Four Doors’, occupies 75sqm, with an historic 16th-century fireplace designed by the architect himself, as well as wood panelling, a painted frieze and carved ceiling. Tall windows open to the garden terrace, with

34

partial views of the Grand Canal from the bathroom. Boasting high ceilings and frescoes in both the bedroom and bathroom, the 73sqm Papadopoli Stanza is a private sanctuary, where the fireplace and frescoes frame sublime views of the garden terrace and the Grand Canal. The 62sqm Maddalena Stanza is adorned with silk wall coverings and delicate chandeliers, with tall windows that open to enchanting views. The Palazzo Stanzas range from 57 to 89sqm, many with original architectural details. The 49sqm Affresco Chambers feature beautiful historical frescoes with views of the manicured garden, which is also overlooked by every Palazzo Bedroom, unique in layout and design. Facing south are Palazzo Chamber Luminoso rooms, where one can admire the historical garden or Grand Canal. Aman Venice invites both guests and non-residents to dine by making a reservation at Arva or book a private-dining experience at the palazzo. Arva, which means ‘cultivated land’ in Latin, channels Italy’s “cucina semplice”, transforming fresh, seasonal ingredients into dishes that celebrate simplicity and

flavour. Developed by Executive Chef Dario Ossola, the Arva menu has been enhanced by Consultant Chef Norbert Niederkolfer. Known for his “Cook the Mountain” philosophy of making the best of locally grown ingredients, Chef Norbert sources sustainable, seasonal produce from the Rialto market, Venetian lagoon and islands to provide a series of unique culinary experiences throughout the year. At Aman Spa, three softy lit treatment rooms offer a selection of therapies inspired by both Asian healing philosophies and the Italian spa tradition. Thermal bathing treatments that use the healing waters of Salsomaggiore Terme, while Aman Spa Rituals include three healing pathways: Grounding, Nourishing, Purifying. From cranial therapy to deep tissue massage, and from beauty treatments to the best in personal training, each session is tailored to the specific needs and goals of the guest. In addition to in-house therapists, visiting experts and international wellness practitioners come to the Aman Spa to share their wisdom and knowledge. There is also a fitness studio with sweeping views over the rooftop of Venice.

The grand staircase in Palazzo Papadopoli was designed by Moises Michelangelo Guggenheim in the Neo-Renaissance Style, inspired by 15th century Florence. The antiquarian, collector, maker of artistic furniture and wellknown figure in Venice was named an “Academic of Merit” by the Royal Academy of Beaux-Arts, corresponding with the University of Venice, Commander of the Crown of Italy and Knight of the order of the saints Maurice and Lazare. As a producer of artistic furniture pieces in Venice, Guggenheim was one of the most active designers of the time and initiated the revival of applied arts to the industry.

2

This 16th century palace was built for the Coccina family, who had Veronese paint the masterpiece “The Family Coccina Presented to The Virgin” (1571). After the last Coccina family member disappeared in 1748, the palace became Palazzo Tiepolo, when it was bought by Giambattista Tiepolo whose artistic touches have been preserved throughout the building. The palace passed from hand to hand before being purchased in 1864 by two brothers, Nicolo and AngeloPapadopoli Aldobrandini, landowners, industrialists and patrons of the arts.

The palace was expanded and redecorated from 1874 to1875. The project was led by the architect Girolamo Levi and by the decorator and antique dealer Moises Michelangelo Guggenheim. The former was in charge of the palace’s expansion and modernisation, while the latter of interior decoration. Guggenheim created a journey through the ages inside the Palazzo Papadopoli where every unique room recreates aristocratic atmospheres, from the solemn grand staircase evoking the 1400s, to the Rococo exuberance in the Stucco Room; from the “Hall of Four Doors” to the “Chinese Room”.

4

Among all the orders he received from ruling houses and individuals, he completely restored the interiors of Palazzo Papadopoli between 1874 and 1881. Guggenheim used the decorative language of several different periods from the Italian Renaissance to the periods of Louis XIV and LouisXVI. A few years later, in 1899, a book documenting the details of his project was published, and it was considered so exceptional that King Louis II of the Kingdom of Bavaria awarded Guggenheim the Gold Medal of Merit for Science and the Arts.

SICILY, THE ISLAND THAT HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE SOURCE IF INSPIRATION FOR THE ITALIAN DESIGNER DUO, IS TOLD THROUGH THOSE CONTRASTS THAT MAKE IT UNIQUE.

IT’S ALL ABOUT PAT C H W O R K

As the Milan shows settled down for a quiet minimalism, somehow reflecting the harsh times that the city is going through, Stefano Dolce and Domenico Gabbana overtly took the opposite direction. The Metropol, D&G’s longtime show venue, was transformed with bright collages of print covering every inch of the walls, the benches and the runway. “Given our long experience being inspired by Sicily, we wanted to tell of all that you can find on an island like this, the different cultures that dominated, from the Spanish to the Arabs to the Normans,” said Dolce, who was born and raised there. “We’ve treasured everything that they have brought to us,” Gabbana added. “And we put it all together.” Weaving together the history and culture of Italy’s beautiful and controversial land of contrasts would take a lifetime, but Dolce & Gabbana give it a go in one collection. On their spring/summer 2021 runway the message is clear: it’s Patchwork time, and it’s here to stay. The designers

RETRO INSPIRED, BUT MODERN

also reference their own backlog, noting their spring/ summer 1993 runway as part of their own inspiration, together with a didtinct 70s style that manages however to feel refreshingly modern. The deisgners celebrate the spirit of Italian artistry with “fatto a mano,” or handmade craftsmanship, typical of both Sicily’s heritage and the brand’s own tradition. Patchwork looks were defined by a demi-

couture approach, literally and figuratively threading together the past with the present. Fabrics from the brand’s archives were interwoven with freshly acquired textiles, resulting into a mix of polka dots, floral brocades, denim, and more, cut together ina mixture of slender and hourglass silhouettes. Optimism meets art and passion, aiming at a brighter future on and off the catwalks.

Eveningwear nods at the 70s, with lengths and light textiles. No hippie flowery dresses here though, the bohemian look is perfectly fine-tuned with blazers and flattering mid-calf skirts in more contemporary textiles.

DE TOMASO’S SWEET SIXTY IS FINALLY HERE:

De Tomaso turned sixty in 2019 and, after having gone bust and being saved by the bell yet another time, he is indeed back. And what better way to say happy birthday: this collection of carbon fibre curves is the new P72, revived by Hong Kong-based IdealVenture, the team responsible for the Apollo Intensa Emozione, and based around that car’s powerful underpinnings.

The story of the De Tomaso brand is far less widely known than brands such as Ferrari. After moving to Italy to become a Formula 1 racing driver, Argentinian-born Alejandro de Tomaso founded his eponymous firm in 1959. The company’s long history includes developing F1 cars for Frank Williams and owning Maserati from 1975 to 1993. New general manager Ryan Berris claims “Alejandro’s journey was never properly told and we feel his name should be commonly recognised among greats such as Enzo Ferrari and Ferruccio Lamborghini”. Today, De Tomaso has been revived by the same Hong Kong-based team responsible for the Apollo Intensa Emozione: the GT1 racecar-inspired V12 supercar being built to motorsport standards in Germany for ten very wealthy collectors as we speak. Indeed, De Tomaso’s chairman since 2014 is Norman Choi, the Hong Kong businessman who’s also masterminded the Apollo project. The new venture isn’t the first time a De Tomaso revival has been attempted. In 2009, a former Fiat executive bought the naming rights and planned to put a range of cars – including an SUV, a luxury saloon and a coupé – into production by 2011. Back to the new P72, with its hypercar features and retro spirit. What is the purpose of another crazy-looking hypercar in the first place? Well, it’s all about inspirations. if the Apollo is all about aggressive looks, the P72 is more of an ode to vintage motorsport, inspired by racers from the

60s and by De Tomaso’s back catalogue. The look tells many stories, like Ollie Kew reported to Top Gear, part Ferrari P3/4, part Alfa 8C, and perhaps some Lister in there too. Bodywork aside, nothing this side of a Pagani has such an opulent interior in the supercar realm. Think Polished copper manual gearbox levers with open, ex“ I had no idea my concept from the mid ‘60s would in any way be influential to a car being presented today.” Peter Brock, Original P70 designer

posed linkage and stuff like that. The P72 is built around a carbon fibre cell of a chassis, with carbon crash structures front and rear and carbon mounts for the suspension. De Tomaso teasingly notes that the chassis – like its Apollo cousin – is FIA LMP motorsport rated, so who is ready to see the new P72 at Le Mans

in 2021? Paying tribute to the old P70 from 1965, the P72’s powertrain is the result of a technical collaboration between De Tomaso and American tuning firm Roush. The P72’s bespoke V8 has been purpose-built by a team to satisfy a specific set of performance and regulatory values while retaining the spirit of the 60s. A bespoke dry-sump lubrication system ensures adequate oil flow even under hard cornering, while a new type of supercharger is said to bring enhanced thermal efficiency, higher operating speeds, improved airflow and reduced noise and vibration. De Tomaso claims that the V8 retains “the character of a naturally aspirated engine” despite the supercharger and has been designed to achieve a “smooth, linear power curve without detracting from the old-school American V8 soundtrack”. The 1965 De Tomaso P70 was also powered by a 5.0-litre Ford V8, with performance upgrades carried out by revered engineer Carroll Shelby. Dramatic P72 is first De Tomaso production model in decades. It will remain highly exclusive and only 72 cars will be produced, hitting the market at the end of this year. The price is in the region of 750,000, the number of cars already sold has not been disclosed. All Photos by G.F. Williams. Info on detomaso-automobili.com

by ROLLS’ DAWN BLACK BADGE: CONSPICUOUS CONSUMPTION A a two-door four-seat land liner powered by a twin-turbocharged 6.6-liter V-12,

Five years before Rolls-Royce founder Henry Royce made his first car in 1904, American economist Thorstein Veblen coined the phrase “conspicuous consumption”. The term was resurrected in popular culture during the nouveau riche explosion in the 80s. Robert Duffer reports that “conspicuous consumption” was the second-most heard expression during his testing days with the Rolls Royce Dawn Black Badge, the first being “How much is that thing?” Point is, the Dawn can hardly be called a “thing”. It is, in fact, a two-door four-seat luxury land liner powered by a twin-turbocharged 6.6-liter V-12, weighing 5,644 pounds yet planing to 60 mph in just 4.9 seconds. As Duffer puts it, it commands attention. The Dawn offers a heightened sensory experience in every imaginable climate. The four-seater cabin is specially engineered with advanced aerodynamics, meaning that passengers are protected from the wind while being at one with the elements. The interior is a perfect harmony of luxury and utility - the bookmatched woodwork on the tonneau and fascia echo the iconic Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn of the 1950s, while the use of metal and leather accents blends sleek with sumptuous.

“How much is that thing?” Point is, the Dawn can hardly be called a “thing” ADVANCED AERODYNAMICS FOR A HEIGHTENED SENSORY EXPERIENCE IN EVERY POSSIBLE CLIMATE Despite its $458,026 as-tested price, the Dawn Black Badge has simple controls where you slide your temperature dials between blue and red and toggle fan speed between “soft,” “medium,” “high” and “max.” No computerized intermittent blows of cool and hot, just simple and straightforward operation that keeps you comfortable. The Dawn also doesn’t wade into the complicated and often finicky world of today’s semi-autonomous technology. Instead of buzzing and beeping as it disengages and reengages a perpetually confused la-

ne-keeping system like every Fiat or Ford, the Dawn doesn’t bother trying. It’s comfortable and smooth enough that you shouldn’t mind driving, so it doesn’t try to take the wheel. Henry Ford famously said “any customer can have a car painted any color that he wants so long as it is black.” Rolls-Royce has a different approach. The customer can have any color that he or she wants, full stop. So if you feel constrained by only having 44,000 existing color options rest assured that you can bring anything and Roll-Royce will make paint for your car to match it.

The point of a Rolls-Royce is that you pay top dollar for a more pleasant, more thoughtful, more unique experience. The Dawn is a perfect execution of this design philosophy. It gets tons of attention, feels amazing to drive and is so free of substantive faults that a mortal passing judgment on it feels almost trite. Automakers using the Detroit method of mass production will gladly sell you a car with more power or more features than any Dawn can offer. But Rolls-Royce has built a priceless brand and extensive waiting list off of what others can’t sell you: something unique. Contact your local dealer for info and testing.

SINGING THE BODY ELECTRIC FOR 60 YEARS A ROLLS-ROYCE PHANTOM HAS CARRIED THE MOST INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE IN THE WORLD, OFTEN ON THE MOST MOMENTOUS OCCASIONS IN HISTORY. THIS EXTRAORDINARY LEGACY IS GIVEN NEW LIFE THROUGH THE INTRODUCTION OF THE FULLY-ELECTRIC ROLLS-ROYCE PHANTOM V BY LUNAZ. WELCOME TO THE FUTURE: NOW IS THE TIME TO DRIVE AND BE DRIVEN IN AN ENTIRELY USABLE, SUSTAINABLE AND RELIABLE EVOCATION OF ‘THE BEST CAR IN THE WORLD’. TO THE MOON AND BACK.

British engineering company Lunaz (named after founder David Lorenz’s daughter Luna) is taking classic, high-end luxury cars from the 1950s and 1960s and converting them into EVs. Basically, they source a limited number of the most celebrated classics in history - think 1961 eight-seat Rolls-Royce Phantom V, Rolls Royce Cloud and 1953 Jaguar XK120 – some of which are no longer functional, and ensure them new life and a future-proof existence using the medium of electricity. Vehicles are transformed in order to provide both high performance and stress-free driving experience, while at the same time preserving their original beauty; they are

46

fully restored to ensure that all the remaining mechanical components are in excellent working order and of the highest modern safety specifications, interior and exterior finish are of superior design and quality. Lorenz was struck with the idea of terraforming classics while waiting on the side of the road for a repair. “I wanted a car like a 1953 Jaguar to be my daily driver”. The process starts with a thorough inspection of the entire car, following by weighing each corner to assess the original’s car’s weight distribution (which will later feed into the chassis set-up). Then, the engine and drivetrain are ripped out. Lunaz then 3D

scans the entire thing in order to deploy the company’s “closely guarded” electric propulsion tech. The whole car is stripped, body defects mended by hand, and everything built back up again, including things like air conditioning, better heating systems, uprated brakes, suspension and steering. The electric powertrain is modular. This means Lunaz can actually produce highly limited production runs of the world’s most beautiful classic cars entirely in-house. The company’s HQ in Silverstone, England, places Lunaz perfectly to recruit from a world-class talent pool of designers, engineers, craftspeople and electric technology specialists: the team’s

Technical Lead and Managing Director, Jon Hilton, is one of the most celebrated minds in powertrain engineering - he takes four decades of learnings in a career that has seen him win multiple Formula 1 World Championships and applies then to answering the questions of reliability, sustainability and usability for the world’s most celebrated classic cars. While it might be somewhat hard to imagine a Rolls or a Jaguar without a grunting, firey engine, it is just a matter of fact that the future is electric and that sustainability is a matter that can no longer be

ignored. So why not step into the future by making the best of classic design immortal? Lunaz makes iconic machines a relevant and usable proposition for the 21st century. A classic car by Lunaz is not just for this generation, it is to be driven and enjoyed for many more. Each classic by Lunaz represents an uncompromised expression of the original. Electrification answers the questions of usability, reliability and sustainability and empowers owners to enjoy their cars daily. Founder David Lorenz is truly passionate about his work, and this passion is clearly vi-

sible in both his statements and his products. “We restore, enhance and create with knowledge that these cars have cultural value far beyond their function. The passion we have for these cars can be felt in every stitch, weld and line of code. No car in the world matches a Phantom for presence, style and significance. Through electrification we proudly further the legacy of the ‘best car in the world’, making Rolls-Royce ownership a relevant choice for a new generation.” Every car by Lunaz is equipped with the capability for both home charging and rapid charging.

The 1961 Rolls-Royce Phantom by Lunaz is built in eight-seat configuration with a front bench for three occupants, rear bench for a further three and two occasional seats. Occupants will benefit from Lunaz’s commitment to using only the very best materials.

THE POWER OF INDEPENDENCE The 120 kWh battery of the Rolls Royce Phantom V by Lunaz is the largest in the world. While the original vehicle is a Rolls Royce, this is not a collaboration with the brand. Lunaz independently works on cars that they acquire from the open market.

Porsche Tycan 4S Powerful Plunge The Ultimate Driving Experience Typically, Porsche launches a new model in base form before firing the big guns. But for its first-ever electric vehicle, the Taycan, the company is building that lineup from the top down: first the seriously powerful 670-hp Turbo and 750-hp Turbo S, then the more reasonably priced 4S. But 4S is hardly a watered-down version of the top Taycans. The Porsche Taycan 4S is the new entry-level model in the brand’s all-electric

50

range, an ‘entry-level’ that is as remarkable as its Turbo stablemate. Maybe more so, since it packs up to 523bhp and 640Nm or, if you step up from the standard 79.2k Wh battery to the 93.4kWh Performance Battery Plus, 563bhp and 650Nm - that’s 0-62mph in four seconds, and it also means that the maximum range jumps from 252 to 287 miles. While it might not shove you back in your seat with quite as much force

as the Turbos do, it will also not leave you pining for more power. The design is sleek and time-

less, puristic, like all Porsches should be. Features include aircurtains (lateral air intakes ahead of the front wheels)

We cannot say it enough: sustainability is now key and the future of cars is electric,

no matter how much we love powerfull roaring engines.Brilliant to drive and revolutionary in its core, the Porsche Taycan 4S is a vehicle that leaves us all actually longing for a plug-in future, as well as demonstrating how fun it can eventually be. A few facts and technical specs: electricity consumption combined: 27,0 – 26,2 kWh/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 0 g/km; top speed: 250km/h.

EVERYTHING THAT YOU NEED AT YOUR FINGERTIPS The S-Class has always been a place for comfortable travel and relaxed working. With the new generation, the interior has fully evolved into hybrid home/workplace. Nearly all comfort-related dimensions of both variants, the S-Class with short and long wheelbase, have been improved in the front and on the rear seats and the sense of space is accordingly generous. The desired harmony between digital and analogue luxury results in a revolutionary interior design, nodding at interior architecture and yacht design elements. The sculptured look of the dashboard, centre console and armrests appears to float above an expansive interior landscape. The systematic reduction in the number of controls underscores the minimalist appearance of the interior. A fine divide between the upper section of the dashboard and the large trim element structures the area and creates horizontal breadth. This interface is also where the active ambient lighting is located. In addition to the up to five screens, highlights include the large trim elements in the dashboard and in the rear. These flow around the passengers and are a systematic further development of the wrap-around effect. One particularly attractive version of the trim is an open-pored wood veneer shot through with inlays of aluminum. The S-Class stands for the fascination of Mercedes-Benz: legendary and traditional engineering expertise defines the luxury segment in the automobile industry. The new S-Class can be experienced with all the senses – seeing, feeling, hearing and smelling – while offering numerous innovations in the areas of driver assistance, protection and interaction. The new S-Class uses digitalisation for a car that responds sympathetically to the needs and wishes of its driver and passengers. Perhaps not the best car for nostalgic analogue-lovers, but definetly a treat for the tech-savvy and fun-loving driver. A technological combination of everything that you need, plus some extras, at your fingetips. Car expert, blogger, vlogger, and youtuber Amrit Hoeba, aka @Carvlogger, has reviewed the 2021 S500 Series version and the S500 AMG-LINE and, understandably, he was struck by the interiors “A new office loaded with new features, from Active Ambiance Lighting to Smart Home Ac-

counts cloud stored. Mercedes Benz is known for their interior gameplay, in the new S-Class, the exterior is typical Mercedes-Benz but the big change starts inside. I’m sitting in this car, but I could be in a space ship. They really have set the new level and, as you might know, the S Class is always the benchmark for Mercedes Benz so all this technology will flow down slowly in the upcoming years to all the other models.” The detailed video review can be found on Amrit Hoeba’s youtube channel, together with astonishing views of both the outside (high-tech silver) and the inside (red leather with diamond red stitching). The second generation of MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) debuts in the new S-Class. Another milestone as the interface between the driver, passengers and vehicle: there are up to five screens on board, some with OLED technology. At the touch of a button, the new 3D driver display for the first time allows spatial perception of the scene with a real 3D effect thanks to eye-tracking. Another impressive feature is the very large head-up display with Amrit Hoeba is an Amsterdam-based automotive enthusiast cooperating with brands like: Mercedes-AMG, BMWM, Audi Sport and more. augmented reality content. When navigating, for example, animated turn-off arrows are virtually and precisely projected onto the road lane. Using cameras in the overhead control panel and learning algorithms, MBUX Interior Assist recognises and anticipates the wishes and intentions of the occupants. It does this by interpreting head direction, hand movements and body language, and responds with corresponding vehicle functions. For example, if the driver looks over his/her shoulder towards the rear window, Interior Assist automatically opens the sunblind. The active ambient lighting with around 250 LEDs is now integrated into the driving assistance systems, and is able to reinforce their warnings visually In addition, feedback is possible when operating the climate control system or the ‘Hey

Mercedes’ voice assistant, for instance. The latest generation of the Driving Assistance Package has new and numerous improved functions. One example is the intelligent compliance with speed limits. The new assistance display in the driver display clearly shows the operating principle of the driving assistance systems as a full-screen view. If, like Amrit Hoeba said, the S Class sets the benchmark for the upcoming Mbs, 2021 is bound to be an exciting year. Some commercial facts and figures: the loyalty rate for the S-Class is especially high. Some 80 percent of S-Class customers in Western Europe

The stylish interplay of exquisite materials and fine surfaces makes the interior an inviting and elegant place of retreat that will tempt you to linger. Expansively inviting, it gives you the space to be yourself, while the superb comfort of the seats invites you to relax. The new active ambient lighting system uses innovative light signals to shed light on everything out there and enhances your safety by also warning you of any danger. Innovative rear airbags can in addition protect the passengers in the outer rear seats, making the new S‑Class even safer than before.

go on to choose another vehicle from Mercedes-Benz. In the US, more than 70 percent do so. More than one third of all saloons of the last generation of the S-Class (model series 222; début 2013) went to China. S-Class customers in China are the youngest with an average age of 40 years. Around the world the S-Class Saloon is predominantly sold in the long wheelbase version: around 9 out of 10 customers opt for the long version of the S-Class Saloon. All in all, since the launch of the generation that is now in its runout phase, more than 500,000 S-Class Saloons have been sold.

by CHEVALIERS DE LA TABLE RONDE, GOÛTONS VOIR SI LE VIN EST BON ENJOY EXCLUSIVE CASTLE LIFE AT THE CHATEAU DE TAILLY SET IN THE FRENCH REGION BURGUNDY, BEST KNOWN FOR ITS WINES

Owned by Christine Cabaret and fully renovated, the Chateau de Tailly is the perfect base from which to discover the charm of Burgundy. Ideal for family vacations and also for events. revedechateaux.com

Located in Meursault, in the French region of Burgundy the Chateau de Tailly is an ancestral residence dating back to the early years of the 18th century, with the construction of the Pavillon de Chasse (hunting lodge), followed by the construction of the chateau in the 19th century under the rule of Napoleon 3rd. The Chateau used to be property of the Champy family and its heirs, owners of the oldest wine estate in Bur-

gundy, today it lives again, to the great pleasure of lovers of old stones. A traditional and authentic family home nestling in a 15 acre park, it’s the perfect base from which to discover the charm of Burgundy, the wine route and the rich heritage of the region. The Chateau is available for bookings and exclusive use: the warm and welcoming dining room makes the ideal place for your special dinners, while two big, fully-equipped

kitchens are at your disposal, for preparing your meals or for private cooking classes. The bedrooms (one suite and three bedrooms) are all very spacious, individually decorated and each with adjoining bathrooms and views over the park. The onsite cottages, Pavillon de la Chasse and Les Aromes, can accommodate up to ten extra guests. In the surrounding park, magnificent trees over 100 years old grow in a chaotic fashion.

INSPIRATIONAL ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN

FROM INSTAGRAM ACCOUNTS TO OFF-GRID HOUSING CONCEPTS The world is in great need of beauty, inside and outside the home. From #cabinporn to the #tinyhousemovement, Instagram has become a place of cottages and green settings. Fashion editor Susan Kaufman - @skaufman4050 - started chronicling the areas around her two homes in New York City and Amagansett on Instagram, and in the process created a second career. Her real estate photography is not really about the architecture, more about the charm: “It has to have some charm to it, some details, some prettiness, some human side of New York and the Hamptons, a sort of old-world charm.” This shot of A House in Wainscott was taken in August, “just before Tropical Storm Isaias came roaring through the Hamptons and we lost all power” But it’s not just social media that has suddenly gone off-grid, a collection of innovative housing concepts has recently begun to grace the market. Mountain Refuge is a tiny-house designed by Italian architects Massimo Gnocchi and Paolo Danesi, acting as a contemporary interpretation of old traditional mountain refuges. The Refuge aims to finding balance between sustainability and design, the goal of the two founders being to be able to deliver it around the world at competitive prices.

The Beach House, a residential housing concept, is the brainchild of design team Ioan Ralea-Toma and Vlad Andrei Popa from Atelier Monolit, a creative studio specialized in communicating architectural projects and ideas through carefully crafted imagery; their designs continually challenge the status-quo to capture the essence of the intended location or idea. The design concept behind the Beach House is one where absolute freedom of body and mind prevail. The minimalist structure with contemporary look features large floor-to-ceiling windows that convey a sense of unity with the surrounding landscape, whilst offering its residents spectacular views of the surrounding area. The futuristic architectural masterpiece, imagined for a beach location, is comprised of a square-shaped concrete pillar that rises piercing two levels

of horizontal plates. This inclined concrete pillar that extends vertically acts as a cantilever to the intersecting concrete and glass horizontal elements that make up the living areas that extends across two floors. The use of glass adds a sense of lightness that further balances the overall feel of the structure. The ground floor of the project contains the living area made up of living room, dining room, kitchen, storage area and bathroom. The upper floor houses the master bedroom, with an ensuite bathroom, that opens onto the large, panoramic roof terrace complete with a small swimming pool or jacuzzi. This terrace perfectly blends in with the background, blending with the location. The overall structure boasts clean linear elements that blend with the surrounding area creating a sense of openness and freedom.

PREMIUM REAL ESTATE MARKET IN NEW YORK AND THE HAMPTONS The demand for luxury real estate in the Hamptons began surging in spring 2020 as New Yorkers fled the city for a safer haven. The Hamptons, a coveted destination during the months between the end of May and the beginning of September, marked by the Memorial Day and the Labor Day weekends respectively in the United States, now symbolise good investment and good quality of life more than ever before. Many Hamptons-based luxury real estate agencies continue sale and rental growth by a large percentage compared to last year. What’s more is that the increase in demand is coupled with a sense of urgency and a new mindset that perceives the Hamptons not only as a vacation spot, but, specially for families with young children, as a more long-term solution and a healthier lifestyle destination for the foreseeable future.

Real estate in the Hamptons has always been synonymous with good investment and good quality of life, and it is now both more than ever before. With the exception of the winter months and March or April, the Hamptons are a coveted destination from May to September. However, Covid-19 has turned the annual schedule upside down, as New Yorkers in the city flock to their Hamptons home. Since March 2020, there have been bidding wars in the market, resulting in sales well over asking prices due to the high number of demands. Sotheby’s International Realty in East Hampton witnessed a surge in inquiries and rapid turnarounds within two days. When stay-at-home order came into place in New York, many renters were willing to pay up to three times the price to get away

58

to the Hamptons. Turnkey properties, such as new constructions, were specially sought-after for those who desired to move in right away. In spring 2020, homes which usually rented for a quarter of a million USD went $50,000 or $100,000 over the asking price. This autumn/winter may see some of the highest rentals yet, as a number of homes will go up to $850,000 a year or $375,000 per month, according to Douglas Elliman. While the Hamptons saw similarly high traffic during summer 2020 compared to the last year, there were many more people looking to buy at the end of their stay, in the hope of turning their favourite vacation spot into a more permanent base. As Elliman pointed out, nearly 100 contracts for $1 to $2 millions homes were signed in August 2020

- a 135% increase from the same month last year. Though the Hamptons have always been a premium market, there was no doubt that it has gone from secondary to primary real estate in the minds of many buyers and renters, proven by an obvious increase in demand from mid-September to April. In just one day that September, East Hampton-based Sotheby’s International Realty received three sealed bids for properties listed that day that went significantly over the

asking prices. The Saunders Market Report, published on 19 August 2020, indicated an increase of 27% in the median price of home sales in the second quarter of 2020 in all Hamptons. The top five homes sold were in East Hampton, Southampton, Amagansett and Bridgehampton. Breaking down the Hamptons, in the first half of 2020 the median price of home sales in Westhampton Beach surged 113%; Quogue Village, 79%; Quio-

From A to Z, beyond locations in the Hamptons Amagansett, Bridgehampton, East Hampton Middle, East Hampton Northwest, East Hampton Springs, East Hampton Village, East Quogue, Hampton Bays, Montauk, North Haven, Quiogue, Quogue, Quogue Village, Remsenburg, Sag Harbor, Sag Harbor Village, Sagaponack, Sagaponack Village, Shelter Island, Southampton, Southampton Village, Village of Westhampton Beach, Wainscott, Water Mill, Westhampton, Westhampton Beach and Westhampton Dunes.

gue, 72%; Sagaponack Village, 58%; Wainscott, 43%; Sag Harbor Village, 40%; Village of Westhampton Beach and West Hampton Dunes, 33% and 32%, respectively. Most of the eager buyers or renters are families looking for a safer place not just to stay for the summer, but to remain for the next one to two years. Local schools in East Hampton, Amagansett and Sag Harbor have seen an increase in enrollment. In East Hampton, Ross School welcomed 101 students this year, compared to 16 in 2019. Private schools based out of New York City have established campuses in the Hamptons as well, like World School which opened up Avenues Studio Hamptons in August. While the move out of the Big Apple may or may not be permanent, buyers are looking at their Hamptons acquitions from a new perspective: even more im-

portant than the location is that the homes have to provide a dynamic, practical and healthy living space for the foreseeable future. So, other than the waterfront, buyers want a home office where one has space and quietness to work, a home-schooling room for the children to do their lessons, a playroom for downtime and a gym for exercise. Along with the healthier lifestyle comes the requirement for a professional kitchen and large pantry for more home-cooked meals and food preparations, as well as more personal space and entertainment opportunities within the home for every member of the family. Thus, new buyers are putting more emphasis on the living space than the location itself, transforming their Hamptons home from a vacation stay to a lifestyle destination.

59

The Hamptons’ median sales price jumped 27.1 percent to $1.08 million during the second quarter of 2020, according to the July 23 Elliman Report analized by LE GRAND MAG, up from $850,000 over the same period in 2019. Breaking into the six figures, it is the highest median sales price recorded in the report’s history. The average sales price in the Hamptons for the second quarter hit $2.09 million, a 21.1 percent hike from the prior year. (Average sale prices tend to be higher than median ones during boom times because a few big-ticket transactions can pull the number up.)
