As a supervisor at Jefferson County Parks & Recreation, even I admit it can be difficult navigating through all the many sports affiliations we have within the county. But as the saying goes, “It takes a village.” There’s no shortage of activities this fall and winter. Kids can swim, play soccer and basketball, join in cheerleading, cross-country and, of course, football. There are also gymnastics and self-defense classes. The Redhawks just played their first volleyball home game Thursday night against Vashon Island at Blue Heron School in Port Townsend, and though they did not win, the Redhawks did bring back more patriot spirit for the upcoming season. The team practices from 3:45 to 5:45 p.m., Monday-Friday at Blue Heron School. Sixthgraders are allowed to watch and practice, but not to play in games until they have reached the seventh or eighth grade. Games days are Tuesdays and Thursdays. “This allows time for students to connect with their teachers directly after school, as our education is encouraged to come first,” said JV volleyball player Imogen Williamson. Some athletes are very committed to the Twisters gymnastics program. And oh

boy, can these Twisters twist. After observing their practices throughout the summer, I was impressed with the amount perseverance these gymnasts have. I was also impressed with the leadership skills I saw in Rell Lennox as she volunteered her time as a Twisters camp counselor throughout the summer. Coaches Kelle Riley and Sierra Young have developed a very supportive structure for these highly cognitive youths. Currently, Twisters is having a giveaway, a free year of recreational classes – as weekly 45-minute sessions. Classes start at the infant level, as it is a very family-friendly organization. Twisters Gym is open year around, and in January, the gymnasts look forward to Great

West Gym Fest. Rec soccer had its first game at H.J. Carroll Park last Sunday afternoon. Thanks to the help of the volunteer parent-coaches, The rec department’s Chris Macklin worked his magic, to the best of his ability, to ensure all needs and requests are fulfilled and that a family-friendly, team-spirited mind set is maintained. Braves football had its first game against Neah Bay on Saturday. With the “no child left behind” spirit, coaches Cameron and Joey Brown lived up to the team name as they led the team courageously against teams that can be almost twice its size. The Braves scored a touchdown as support from the fans and cheerleaders roared across the Blue Heron field.

There are several devoted athletes whom I see continuously stepping up to the plate for Jefferson County. Two of them are Anika Carlson, a high school soccer player for Port Townsend School District and referee for county rec soccer; and Maddie Dowling, a soccer player for the Chimacum School District and also a referee for county rec. Yes, there is rivalry at games, but then, the very next day, these same athletes are seen refereeing together on soccer fields and at basketball games, laughing and enjoying each other’s company. We are a community that works hard and plays hard. We are Jefferson County. And there are plenty of opportunities for both children and parents to get involved and stay active this fall and into the winter. Jennifer Johnson is a supervisor for Jefferson County Parks and Recreation and has an 8-year-old son, Rastan Woodiwiss, enrolled in the Chimacum School District. He plays sports for the Port Townsend School District and says, “I always wanted to have one foot in Chimacum and one foot in Port Townsend.” Johnson also is a lifeguard and paraeducator, and is involved in the Solidarity through Arts and Music Festival as well as many other community activities.

Saturday, September 16, 3:00 pm – PTFF Roadshow @JCL: Bending the Arc Thirty years ago, a group of improbable heroes came together on a mission both medical and moral, and highly unlikely to succeed. Their goal was to make high-quality healthcare available to everyone, even in the world’s poorest countries. Fighting entrenched disease, political and bureaucratic machinery, and the “charity-industrial complex” itself, these crusaders insisted that health care is basic human right in every society and in doing so, changed the lives of millions of people across the globe. Street, keeps herself afloat working five jobs at once, and sleeps in unheated rooms in desolate neighborhoods. Lonely, struggling financially, and fearful of her visa expiring, s h e marries badly and then divorces, taking on the challenge of raising her daughter, Lauryann, as a single mother. But it is her dream for Lauryann’s future that will give her the courage and strength to endure. The story of Anchee’s eventual success—as a mother, a wife, a writer, and a woman—is an immigrant story that illuminates so many things we take for granted. And it is a universal story, about moving forward until you find a path – or find you’ve been blazing one all along. Anchee Min’s writing has been praised for its raw, sharp language and historical accuracy. In addition to her two memoirs, she has written six works of historical fiction: Katherine, Becoming Madame Mao, Wild Ginger, Empress Orchid, The Last Empress, and Pearl of China. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 5, 4:00 PM– A Brother’s Grimm Puppet Show: Hans in Luck Ages 5 to 105 are invited to attend this original adaptation of the Brothers Grimm tale Hans in Luck, a coming of age story that shows the longing of a young man to go home again after a long seven years in service to his master. He has 6 encounters on this journey, each bringing about wins and losses as he makes a series of choices and subsequent deals with the people he meets. Created and performed by artist “Max” Eberhard Eichner from Berlin, Germany, this Pappenspiel (paper play) is a solo show that brings the story alive on a trunksized, tabletop stage through a blend of hand-painted paper puppets, storytelling, acoustic music and sound effects. The theater is inspired by an 1850’s Central European puppetry and storytelling form using paper figures, referred to as papiertheater (paper theater). Pappenspiel travels to its shows by bicycle. During the month of June, Max (plus a 5 pound canine co-pilot and performer: Fraulein Schribbel) traveled with his theater over 500 miles by bicycle between Bellingham and Eugene in order to perform at the Oregon Country Fair. KLEE WYCK JOURNAL Thursday, Nov. 2, 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. Join author Lou Mckee for a discussion of her book, Klee Wych Journal. “This is western Canada’s rain coast!.. where we finally claimed a home beach after years of kayaking and camping in Washington and British Columbia, exploring new areas each trip out. We named this beach Klee Wyck, Laughing One, the name that the young artist Emily Carr earned from the coastal native people. Many days were pristine fresh and sunny...but, when that coastal rain came, we were captured under drooping tarps and breathing smoky fires, sometimes for a week. “Let’s build a better shelter in the woods!” So the story begins. As the days, months and years go by, I keep an illustrated journal of all the flora that grows around us, and all the life in tide pools, seaweeds and shelled critters. When the cabin begins to ‘mature’ I add drawings of our cozy interior hangout. These pages, completed on the beach, forest or in the cabin, are the inspiration for the book story KLEE WYCK JOURNAL and the original pencil color and ink drawings decorate its pages.” http://www. loumckee.com/works.htm

It is referred to as Papiertheater (paper theater). “Pappenspiel” (paper play) is a community oriented solo show by “Max” Eberhard Eichner, a Berlin, Germany, born and raised artist. Max Eberhard adds to his carefully and for all ages selected tales of the Grimms a kind of “one-man” band with acoustic music accompaniment, original songs and sound effects. THE ART OF RECALLING: the Art and Writing of Emilie Demant Hatt and Johan Turi Tuesday, Oct. 24, 7:00-8:30pm In the early twentieth century, the Danish artist Emilie Demant Hatt and Johan Turi, a Swedish Sami hunter and would-be writer and artist, formed an unlikely bond. She edited and translated his classic work, An Account of the Sami, which included his drawings. He introduced her to the world of nomadic reindeer herders. Back in Denmark, Demant Hatt wrote her own narrative, With the Lapps in the High Mountains, and used S pmi as a motif in her Expressionist linocuts and paintings; while at Lake Tornetr sk Turi continued to write and draw. Barbara Sjoholm has been studying the lives of Demant Hatt and Turi for many years and presents a talk and slide show about their mutual influence and how S pmi is reflected in their writings and artwork. Copies of Sjoholm’s new biography of Demant Hatt, Black Fox (University of Wisconsin) will be available. Barbara Sjoholm is the editor and translator of Demant Hatt’s narrative With the Lapps in the High Mountains. Her many books include novels about Demant Hatt’s youthful romance with Danish composer Carl Nielsen: Fossil Island and The Former World.
