Paint isn’t permanent—though sometimes it feels like it is if you factor in costs and the work. That’s why figuring out a new color scheme for a room or an entire house can leave us paralyzed with indecision. Creating a harmonious palette in a vacuum is challenging, so many of us play it safe with shades of white-on-white or neutrals. But even then, which white? What counts as a neutral? How do I best branch out to pastels or primaries? I have a terrible time coming up with a color scheme on command—like when you’re stumped for a word and the more you try to ferret it out, the more blank your head feels—so I don’t even try. Instead, I move on and think about or do something else. Then a few minutes later, the plan miraculously appears. I remember years ago waffling over the colors for a website I was designing. The answer came to me in the shower. (I don’t know about you, but ideas also come to me while I’m driving or cooking.) Right in front of me was an orange shaving cream cap, a turquoise bar of soap, and a pale yellow shampoo bottle—that became the new palette for the home page. The point is to always be open and subconsciously searching. I fi nd color combos everywhere, most often out in nature on a forest walk or a beach stroll picking up shells and stones. Sometimes it’s a flower

arrangement I see at a farmers market or create from the garden. When I feel truly blocked, I seek out the art of master colorists like Turner, Frankenthaler, and Magritte— a corner of a painting often yields the solution. Using social media, we have more opportunities than ever to fi nd inspiration by following color experts whose eye we admire. They may be flower farmers, potters, foragers, or photographers. They may be fashion designers whose haute couture we could never afford but whose artistic vision is free to be enjoyed by all in a video of their show. The challenge is to be able to sift through the visual chaos and receive those bolts from the blue when they fortuitously occur. Melanie Mannarino, author of The (Almost) Zero Waste Guide, tracked down some of the most common curbside conundrums so you can raise your recycling game.

Plastic bottles Anything that has a neck for a screwon lid is likely recyclable, says Mitch Hedlund, executive

director of Recycle Across America. But double-check your town’s rules. Most recycle #1 and #2 plastics (find the number in the little triangle on the bottle). But there are seven total numbered plastics, and rules vary widely. Recycling your #5 yogurt container in a city that takes only #1s and #2s does more harm than good. Caps? Screw them on unless the label or your town says otherwise.

Make it a habit to skip straws and specify, “No cutlery, please!” when you order takeout.

Great news for anyone wondering how much water they’re wasting trying to rinse that last bit of peanut butter from the jar: The EPA says “spatula clean”— scraping out as much residue as you can— is good enough.

Use craft punches to create dot and flower stencils from the tape, then firmly press shapes onto eggs. Paint with a slightly dry brush to give designs a crisp edge. Remove tape with tweezers.

ayley Francis grew up spending summers and weekends at the family beach house. She remembers beachcombing and making art projects with her late mother, Laurie, also a designer. Hayley still visits regularly, as do her sister, nieces, and nephew, so creating the tiny home was all about making more space for the family to gather and keeping the special times going. “It was a dream project,” she says. With the help of Seattle architect/designer Seth Grizzle of Graypants, Hayley incorporated a private bedroom, an effi cient and stylish kitchen, and a small but luxe bathroom. Vaulted ceilings, French doors where the garage doors were, and generous windows make the guesthouse feel large and airy. Budget-wise secondhand furniture and open shelving balance decorative extras such as brass plumbing fixtures and statement lighting. And for rainy days or movie nights, there’s a built-in projector above the sleeper sofa and a pull-down screen mounted above the window seat.

FLEXIBLE FURNITURE Hayley uses this sitting spot for breakfast and when remotely running her design business, Neon Doves. The expandable table, an old family piece, pulls up to the window seat. The built-ins include niches tall enough to stow the stools.

The backsplash is only 3½×6½ feet, allowing her to use a single slab of soapstone.

Hayley took a cue from all-in-one European baths and specified a wet room: Hexagonal ceramic tiles cover all the surfaces, eliminating the need for a shower stall. “I’ve always wanted a fully tiled bath, and this ended up saving us space,” she says.

Maximizing every inch, a custom cushion fills a berth built into the highest section of the ceiling. With no inches to spare for furniture, a wall sconce accommodates nighttime reading.

Hayley’s decision to remodel was more for sentimental reasons than cost savings. Have an architect help you weigh your options. n

A tool-savvy pet owner discovered a clever, decorative way to let her sleeping dogs lie cozily without taking up floor space.

i

nspired by a custom built-in dog kennel in a friend’s house, Jessi Way figured out how to make one by retrofitting a laundry room cabinet in her own Carmel, IN, home. She converted a base cabinet into a safe, comfortable hangout and sleeping spot for her two dogs, Frankee, a Boston terrierpapillon mix, and BigBoy, a Chihuahua. “I found a way to make unused space functional for our needs,” says Jessi, who shares her house projects on Instagram (@thegoodwrench). To spruce up the rest of the room after completing the kennel, Jessi painted the walls, added a pink glass-tile backsplash, and built a pair of floating shelves. What she describes as her easiest do-it-yourself project is also her most practical: The kennel is used daily for dog naps and bedtime, and to keep the pair secure when Jessi isn’t home. “The dogs love it. This is their house, and they know it,” she says.

Jessi spent only four hours and less than $100 adapting a standard base cabinet. She was happy to get rid of the dogs’ freestanding crate, which made the laundry room feel cramped.

WOOD DOORS

After removing the cabinet doors, Jessi cut out the fi xed shelf inside using an oscillating multi-tool. For new doors, she took apart a threepanel pet gate from HomeGoods, then positioned new hinges to work with the cabinet openings. She mounted the doors to the face frame so they align in the center.

Thin magnetic drawer latches keep the doors in place. When the dogs are inside the kennel, a stainlesssteel flip latch on the doors adds security.

TILE SURFACE

For easy cleanup (accidents do happen), Jessi decided to tile the bottom of the cabinet and

partway up the sides. The small space didn’t take long to do, and she enjoyed the chance to practice her tiling skills. She chose 12×24-inch porcelain tiles from Home Depot to cover the most surface area with the fewest grout lines. With a wet-tile saw, she cut each piece to size. Once the tile was in place and had set overnight, she applied leftover grout from another project and caulked the edges

to cover any cracks or rough spots.

FINAL TOUCHES

A fabric-wrapped cushion covers the tiled cabinet bottom. Just for fun, Jessi decorated the inside of the kennel. She painted the side surfaces a soothing blue-gray and applied whimsical vinyl decals cut with a Cricut machine. ■

WHEN TO PLANT Spring and early summer are the ideal times to plant groundcovers. Their roots are shallow, so it’s easy to make room for them. Firm the soil around them after planting and water once a week while they are becoming established. It’s fi ne to start with small plants, as groundcovers grow quickly. WHERE TO PLANT Gerdes recommends planting under trees, at the edges of fl owerbeds, and around the skirts of larger perennials. Spring-blooming groundcovers also work well with spring-fl owering bulbs. Phlox looks spectacular planted at the top of a stone wall, where it can cascade gracefully.

Need a morning pick-me-up? Sometimes all it takes is a fresh shape to update an old favorite. Cutting a loaf of bread into cubes rather than slices turns French toast into bite-size finger food. A crunchy coating of cinnamon-sugar covers the cubes, while the insides stay soft and custardy. It’s a breakfast built to bring a smile.

A serious upgrade to those French toast fingers we loved at the breakfast buffet, the shape of the bread makes all the difference in this otherwise simple dish. The easiest way to cut a crusty loaf into cubes is to halve it first. Place each half on its flat side and cut into a 2-inch grid, then cut the strips into squares. t’s hard to know if haroset, the sweet Passover spread that appears on ritual Seder plates around the world, is as tasty as it seems or if the dish merely stands out among the shank bones, parsley, and horseradish that typically feature in the holiday ritual. Either way, every year it is the star of my family’s Seder. Growing up, I always felt the eight days of Passover were different from the rest of the year. Perhaps it was the lush smells of springtime, the unusual holiday foods we stocked to meet Passover’s strict dietary constraints of no grains or leavened breads, or the maniacal cleaning we’d undertake to rid the house of any crumbs. I don’t quite know how the ritual of making haroset with Grandma Ruth began, but for decades we prepped the dish together, just the two of us. Grandma started by deftly peeling and coring apples. She deputized me to chop them, along with walnuts. We used her oldfashioned wooden chopping bowl and

She sprinkled cinnamon, saying “you can never use too much,” and poured Manischewitz wine into the bowl. We mixed it together, tasting spoonfuls. There was no recipe, just the taste-memories of generations before her. Grandma Ruth’s raison d’être is feeding loved ones. In her kitchen I watched in awe as she tasted everything for proper spicing, even raw meat. When I was 9 or 10, I followed her around to record her recipe as she baked my favorite dessert, apple strudel. I asked her all sorts of questions while she cooked, but mostly we talked about her family. Grandma Ruth was born in Shumsk, Poland (now Ukraine), in 1928. when she was just 11. Only after returning to Europe, where she lived in displaced persons camps in Austria, did she begin to learn to cook. Her education continued when she and her family settled as refugees in Lynn, MA. The flavors of her home shtetl (or town) in Poland became central to the narrative she shared with me about her life before the war and our family’s heritage. These days, when I spend Passover apart from Grandma Ruth and my family, I make haroset in the wooden chopping bowl she gifted me. I taste as I go, adding honey and lemon juice only when my apples aren’t tart enough or the wine sweet enough. My version includes prunes, a common ingredient in Eastern European Jewish cooking, which I feel enhance the flavor and texture. Just as I stood beside Grandma Ruth, my niece and nephews now prepare the haroset with my mother. That’s the thing about family traditions: They evolve. However, my sisters and I still fight over who gets to take home leftover haroset, so not everything changes.

GRANDMA RUTH’S PASSOVER HAROSET How you prepare haroset can reveal your family origins. My Iraqi relatives use walnuts and date syrup to make it. Yemeni, Persian, and Greek Jews use dried dates and figs instead of fresh fruit. Whether or not you grew up eating haroset, feel free to make this recipe with ingredients that connect you to your heritage. START TO FINISH 20 min. 1¹∕2 cups diced tart apples (about 1 or 2 apples) ¹∕2 cup raw walnuts 4 prunes, pitted and quartered (optional) 1 tsp. ground cinnamon ¹∕4 cup sweet Concord wine (preferably Manischewitz) or sweet grape juice 1 Tbsp. honey or maple syrup (optional) 1 Tbsp. lemon juice (optional)

ome people keep their wedding china tucked away. Virginia Williams is not one of them. Her beloved Herend Queen Victoria dishes are used often and prominently displayed in a glass cabinet in the dining room. In fact, the pattern’s bright blues, pinks, and yellows are what inspired the palette throughout her Los Angeles home. “It feels like the perfect marriage of the South and Southern California,” says the Tennessee native. In 2013 when the actress and her talent manager husband, Bradford Bricken, purchased the 1960 modern ranch—originally designed by architect Perry Neuschatz of the famous Neutra Group—it was dark and dated. But the couple were looking for a project, not only to create a home that fit their style but also as a way to heal after suffering three miscarriages. With the help of friend and interior designer Seyie Putsure, they covered the wood paneling in white paint, which welcomes the rainbow of Virginia’s favorite hues. Putsure also layered in a few Hollywood Regency notes— mirrored, metallic, and lacquered finishes and crystal details—as a nod to the couple’s professions in the entertainment industry. Today, the house sports a punchy Palm Springs look that complements the midcentury architecture as well as the vibrancy of a young family that now includes two energetic boys (Ford, 6, and Beau, 4). “It’s bright and fun and sunny,” Virginia says. “Even when it’s a mess, it still feels happy.” April 2022 |

1. Preheat oven to 375°F. Flour a rolling pin and, on a piece of parchment or floured board, roll out the Honey Wheat Pastry dough, rolling from center outward to a 12-inch round. Transfer dough to a 9-inch pie plate, centering it in the middle of the plate and letting the dough hang over the edge. Gently lift the sides of dough and press dough into

the bottom crease of the pie plate, working your way around so there are no gaps between the dough and the pie plate. Fold edge of dough underneath itself, gently pinching to seal dough. The edge of the dough should stand about 1/2 inch above the lip of the pie plate. Crimp and flute the edge of the dough if you like. Chill 10 to 15 minutes. 2. Meanwhile, in a large skillet heat 3 Tbsp. olive oil and the garlic over medium. When the garlic just begins to simmer in the oil (2 minutes), cook, stirring frequently and occasionally tilting the pan to submerge the garlic in oil, 90 seconds or until golden and fragrant. Add potatoes, making sure to separate slices as you stir them. Cook, stirring occasionally, 10 minutes or until potatoes are tender and lightly browned in places. (Reduce heat if the potatoes brown too quickly or begin to burn on the edges before cooking through.) Remove large pieces of the smashed garlic and stir in the peas. Season with 1 tsp. fine sea salt and cook, stirring occasionally, about 1 minute or until peas are warmed through. With a slotted spoon, transfer potato-pea mixture to a clean, folded kitchen towel or a couple of paper towels to absorb excess oil. 3. Cover chilled dough with a piece of parchment and fill with dry beans or pie weights. Bake 20 minutes or until edges are set and golden. Remove parchment and dry beans; bake 5 to 10 minutes more or until the dough dries out. 4. In a large bowl whisk together the eggs, cream, 3 tsp. of the chives, the dill weed, 1 tsp. of the lemon zest, 1/2 tsp. fine sea salt, and 1/4 tsp. freshly ground black pepper. Remove 1/4 cup of the peas from the potato mixture. Stir the potatoes and remaining peas into the egg mixture until combined. Pour mixture carefully into the hot crust and use tongs to spread out the potatoes. Top evenly with the goat cheese and remaining 1 tsp. chives. Place pinches of the remaining 1/2 tsp. lemon zest over the goat cheese. 5. Bake 25 minutes or until lightly golden brown and center is just set. Transfer to


a wire rack to cool at least 15 minutes before cutting. Top with the reserved peas and, if you like, pea shoots and a light sprinkling of flaky sea salt. OPZELURA cream is for use on the skin only. Do not use OPZELURA cream, in your eyes, mouth or vagina. OPZELURA may cause serious side effects, including: Serious Infections: OPZELURA cream contains ruxolitinib. Ruxolitinib belongs to a class of medicines called Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors. JAK inhibitors are medicines that affect your immune system. JAK inhibitors can lower the ability of your immune system to fight infections. Some people have had serious infections while taking JAK inhibitors by mouth, including tuberculosis (TB), and infections caused by bacteria, fungi, or viruses that can spread throughout the body. 1. Preheat the oven to 450°F. In an extra-large skillet heat 2 Tbsp. olive oil and the garlic over medium. When the garlic just begins to simmer, cook and stir 90 seconds or until fragrant and golden in places. Add the leeks, ³∕4 tsp. fine sea salt, and ¹∕4 tsp. freshly ground black pepper. Cook, stirring, 5 to 7 minutes or until leeks are tender and golden. Add peas and mint; cook and stir 2 minutes or until peas are crisptender. Remove from heat; cool briefly. 2. In a medium bowl whisk together the ricotta, buttermilk, cream, Parmesan, ¹∕4 tsp. fine sea salt, and ¹∕4 tsp. freshly ground black pepper. 3. Oil two baking sheets. Lightly flour a large cutting board or work surface. Use your fi ngers to evenly flatten one disk of the Flatbread Dough, working from the center out to the edge. Lightly flour a rolling pin; roll out dough portion evenly to a 12-inch circle. Transfer dough to one of the baking sheets, stretching the dough as needed to maintain the diameter. While pulsing the food processor, gradually pour the yeast mixture then 2 Tbsp. olive oil through the feed tube. Continue to pulse until the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl and just begins to form a ball. (If the dough isn’t coming together, add 1 to 2 tsp. warm water, 1 tsp. at a time, and pulse until it just comes together in a ball.) 4. Lightly flour a work surface or cutting board. Transfer dough to the work surface; knead briefly (about 10 times) until dough is smooth and slightly sticky. Shape dough into a ball, place in a large oiled bowl, and cover with plastic wrap. Which vitamins and minerals are worth taking? There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, but here’s what experts say about getting the nutrients you need.

espite the dizzying array of supplements available, most of us don’t need to take many of them. But there are a few nutrients that Americans are commonly deficient in. Remember: “If you can’t meet your needs through food, supplements can help bridge the gap,” says Debbie Petitpain, RDN, a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. IN YOUR 30S AND 40S FOLIC ACID

doyou reallyneed amultivitamin? Some experts consider a multivitamin a good insurance policy in case you’re not eating a wellbalanced diet. Others think they’re not necessary. For the most part, a multivitamin will do no harm. Just be sure to look at the percentages on the label and choose one that has no more than 100 percent of each nutrient listed, Petitpain says. The potential for danger comes from overdoing certain nutrients, especially fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, E, and K, which can build up in your system. Also take a pass on the iron if you’re postmenopausal to avoid toxicity as well as uncomfortable GI side effects.

This B vitamin helps form new cells, and it’s crucial to take before becoming pregnant to prevent serious birth defects. Fortified breads and cereals have some folic acid, but the official

recommendation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is for all women of childbearing age to take a 400 mcg supplement. OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS Found in

fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, and tuna, omega-3s support brain and heart health and help lower inflammation. Aim to eat fish twice a week. If you don’t eat fish, ask your doc about a supplement and dosage.

IN YOUR 50S VITAMIN B12

Starting in your 50s, you might not make enough of a certain stomach protein that helps absorb B12. Certain medications, including metformin for diabetes and ones for acid reflux, also interfere with B12 absorption. Most adults over 50 should consider taking a supplement containing 100–400 mcg per day to protect the nervous system and keep energy levels up.

IN YOUR 60S AND BEYOND PROTEIN

You probably don’t need a supplement, but be aware protein requirements for maintaining muscle mass and overall strength

increase with age. Aim to eat some protein at every meal, which might mean adding Greek yogurt or an egg to breakfast or as a snack. EYE-PROTECTIVE VITAMINS AND MINERALS If you’ve

been diagnosed with age-related macular degeneration (AMD)— the most common cause of blindness— ask your doctor if you’d benefit from taking a supplement called AREDS (a combo of vitamins C and E, beta-carotene, copper, and zinc) or AREDS2 (adds lutein and zeaxanthin instead of betacarotene). Both have been clinically shown to delay or prevent blindness in people with moderate to severe AMD.

Not eating meat doesn’t necessarily mean you need a supplement—assuming you eat eggs and dairy.
