1. How was growing up for you? LAU: Growing up in Mexico City was a very rich experience specially with my mom’s commitment to make me widen my views of the world, she always will say “Is not about your immediate surroundings but you need to have COSMOVISION and your views of the world need to expand as much as possible”. That sense of exploring and to go further has stayed with me until now. For her, as a single mom and with little help from dad, keeping her commitment with us to have the best life we could was not easy, she worked hard so we did not have to experience ‘being poor’ as she had growing up. 2. What were your core family values? LAU: Support each other, never give up when facing hard circumstances, be thankful for the things you have. Always think that there are many people without the same possibilities and always love intensively. 3. What led you into your current business? LAU: A mixture of looking at the future and what new generations will have to face, seeing how the basic needs of living and being in community were vanishing out of the grasp of them. Housing ownership and current offerings have become an unattainable security that these generations see impossible. I wanted to create a solution that could bring this security back to them with P.A.D. (Personal Apportion Dwellings ®)

LATINO ART LEADERSHIP WHAT WE NEED TO LEARN FROM IT

DIATONIC BRILLIANCE:

A FAIRYLIKE SCULPTOR'S JOURNEY INTO AN OUTSTANDING MAGICAL FIGURATIVE WORLD

A

LESSANDRA Albin possesses a masterful talent for faithfully recreating the physical form of her subjects while simultaneously capturing their essence, using only the notes inherent to the prevailing key. She is an exceptionally intelligent and intuitively gifted sculptor, dedicated to her craft for nearly five decades. Each generation makes its own contribution to art, establishing unique landmarks based on its characteristics and aesthetic preoccupations. A contemporary artist, Alessandra Albin straddles the worlds of abstract and figurative art, situated between two generations of Mexican master artists. Interestingly, she didn't begin sculpting until her middle age. She views the human figure as more than just an anecdotal motif but as a pure mass, stripped of extraneous symbolism.

As Wassily Kandinsky said, "Abstract means to separate something from something else."

nation to complete the narrative. As she aptly puts it, "You don't see the complete piece, but you complete it." Her work emphasizes the importance of material harmonies over precise representations, casting shadows and shapes on the human body that seem to hover, much like the works of Rodin and Maillol. Alessandra's sculptures exude simplicity and candor, governed by harmonies of tone. Her sculptures are not merely physical likenesses; they also convey the intangible essence of their subjects. Her art questions the boundaries between the subjective and the corporeal, exploring the multifaceted nature of identity and human experience. Alessandra's sculptures bridge the gap between the bodily structure of her subjects and the rich tapestry of spiritual activity. Her work encompasses a gamut of expression, from naturalism to hyper-realism. The spirit of Alessandra's art is immediate and captivating, evoking a desire to explore her sculptures and experience their harmonious beauty firsthand. Her work is a testament to her confidence and the respect and admiration she holds for her craft. She remains an irreducible phenomenon, infusing each piece with a fragment of herself for others to discover.

Alessandra Albin was born in Mexico City in 1957 to Italian parents. Studied at the "Escuela Nacional de Pintura y Escultura La Esmeralda'' from 1975 to 1980, the oldest visual and plastic arts school in the Americas, where the Master Diego Rivera use to teach and she also pursued acting at Centro Universitario de Teatro. With over 22 years of lecturing and teaching art at The Museo Carillo Gil, Centro Cultural de Arte Contemporaneo, Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana, The American School Foundation in Mexico City and at Rice University and the Awty International School in Houston, Texas. She has left her mark on countless aspiring artists.

“I can only say how fresh and bright and swift I find her total magic.” Alessandra Albin's art has found a home in numerous prestigious institutions and private collections in Mexico City, Houston and Montgomery, Texas among others. Her upcoming exhibition will be presented at Monterroso Gallery from May 15 till June 1, 2024.

A unique figurative sculptor, Albin's work resides at the intersection of sensuality, mysticism, and excitement, all encapsulated within the human form. She believes that her artistic journey is not a career but a conscious decision “Every piece I do, I put myself in it. Everyto listen to her inner self and become an artist. Alessandra emphasizes that while we don't thing has a fragment or fraction of me… and invent the black thread, it's what we do with it you, if you dare and find yourself. – AA.” that matters. She explores the expressive potential of the human form to create captivating compositions with bold rubs, creating what she calls an "Outstanding Magical Figurative World." Just as a diatonic scale in music maintains a specific pattern of intervals, Alessandra's figurative work constructs rhythmic images through the relationships of her subjects. She sees the relationship between gesture and language as a form of nonverbal communication, using traditional materials to enhance her characters' attributes. Her work invites viewers to engage with the figure in an intimate and personal way. Alessandra Albin's art is intentionally fragmented, leaving room for the viewer's imagi6 LATINO LEADERS NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2023

THE FUTURE OF WORK: AI-POWERED TALENT OPTIMIZATION EVERY BUSINESS STRATEGY demands results. Whether those results are positive, or negative is in the hands of its people. According to Predictive Index, Talent optimization is a discipline that provides business leaders with a framework and tools to design their culture, roles, and teams to maximize business results. In the modern workplace, the convergence of talent optimization and artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping the landscape of human resource management. The following research case studies illustrate the transformative impact of this powerful alliance: Predictive Hiring Success: Research by leading organizations highlights how AI-driven talent acquisition tools significantly enhance predictive hiring success. By analyzing historical data, candidate behavioral and cognitive assessment results, and correlating candidate attributes with job performance, businesses can now make informed hiring decisions, ensuring a more accurate match between skills and job requirements. Individualized Development Paths: Studies highlight the effectiveness of AI in tailoring individualized learning paths. AI algorithms, by assessing employee skills and preferences, recommend personalized training programs. This targeted approach not only enhances employee development but also aligns individual growth with organizational goals. Enhanced Performance Feedback: AI-powered performance feedback systems have demonstrated a notable impact on employee engagement and productivity. Real-time feedback mechanisms, driven by AI analytics, provide actionable insights, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and recognition. Optimized Team Dynamics: Research delves into the optimization of team dynamics through AI analysis. By understanding the unique strengths and working styles of team members, organizations can assemble teams that complement each other, driving collaboration, innovation, and high-performance outcomes.

Ethical AI Practices: Research emphasizes the importance of ethical AI practices. Establishing guidelines for fair and transparent AI decision-making mitigates concerns about bias and ensures a positive employee experience. Ethical AI contributes to a trusting relationship between employees and the technology supporting talent optimization. Forward-thinking companies such as Unilever and Hilton are leveraging AI to optimize their talent acquisition, development, and retention strategies, gaining a competitive edge in today's dynamic marketplace: Unilever: According to Harvard Business Review, the global consumer goods giant, faced a major challenge: finding the right talent in a vast pool of candidates. To address this, they partnered with Pymetrics, an AI platform that uses gamified assessments to predict job success and cultural fit. By analyzing cognitive abilities, personality traits, and work styles, Pymetrics unearthed hidden gems who might have been overlooked through traditional resume-based screening. The results were impressive: Unilever reduced unconscious bias by 27%, improved new hire performance by 15%, and increased employee retention by 10%. Hilton: According to Forbes, the renowned hospitality chain, recognized the need for continuous employee development to stay ahead of the curve. They implemented Cornerstone OnDemand, an AI-powered learning and development platform. Cornerstone analyzes individual performance data and recommends personalized training paths to bridge skill gaps. This data-driven approach resulted in a 20% increase in employee engagement, a 15% reduction in learning and development costs, and a 10% boost in employee productivity. By embracing “AI-Powered Talent Optimization” platforms, companies can: • Reduce bias and increase diversity in their workforce. • Improve the accuracy and efficiency of talent acquisition. • Personalize learning and development opportunities for every employee. • Boost employee engagement and productivity.

• Reduce turnover and enhance talent retention. As AI technology continues to evolve, its impact on human resources will only become more profound. DE LA VEGA ON LEADERSHIP

THE ART OF PROBLEM-SOLVING IN SALES Ralph de la Vega

I RECENTLY witnessed a sales presentation to a group of executives that was advantageous for the supplier but would aggravate the most significant challenge their customer faced. The sales leader was oblivious to this critical fact. The supplier lost the sale, and the sales pitch raised questions about the future relationship between the two organizations. They never asked the customer the crucial question: “What are your most significant problems?” The key to successful long-term customer relationships lies not just in the product or service you offer but in your capability to solve your customer’s most significant problems. This approach is fundamental to building trust, loyalty, and long-term relationships. The first step in solving your customer’s problems is understanding them thoroughly. This requires active listening and empathy. When you engage with customers, focus on understanding their unique challenges and pain points and encourage them to express their needs and concerns in detail. The next step is to tailor your products or services effectively. This requires a deep knowledge of your offerings and the creativity to adapt them to different scenarios. Tailoring solutions to solve your customer’s most significant challenges is critical to build trust and credibility. When presenting a solution, focus on the benefits rather than just the features. Customers are more interested in how your product or service can help them or

their business be more successful than its specifications. Explain how your solution can mitigate the pressing issues customers face. After listening to a major customer’s most significant problem, I asked them to give us two weeks to come back with a solution to address their specific needs. We did not make the pitch we planned. Instead, we returned to the drawing board and developed a more tailored proposal. We won a coveted multi-year contract and established a long-lasting relationship with the C-Suite team of the company. Problem-solving isn’t just about making a sale. It is about building a long-term relationship. When customers know you are dedicated to helping them succeed, they are more likely to be repeat customers and advocates for your brand. Finally, always seek feedback. This helps in understanding the effectiveness of your solution and provides insights for continuous improvement. It also shows customers that you value their opinions and are committed to serving them better. Solving your customer’s most significant challenges is crucial to long-term relationships. Using this approach, you not only meet your sales targets but also build a loyal customer base and a strong, reputable brand. Ask the question, tailor the solution, focus on the benefits, and build long-term relationships. It’s the art of problem-solving in sales.

LATINO LEADERS ALEX CAMPOS

A

lex, who was born in Cuba, hails from a family that escaped communism in Cuba when he was only seven years old. Upon arriving in the United States, he lived in New Jersey and Miami. Prior to his success with Vensure, Alex refined his skills as an expert software developer and excelled in many fastgrowing verticals, including the technology, financing, insurance, and consulting industries. His ability to foster strong relationships with influential business and political leaders has allowed him to guide Vensure to the top levels of performance.

LEADING VENSURE TO SUCCESS

Being Latino is something Alex is incredibly proud of. He says, “I embrace my Latino heritage, but it was not always this way. When I was 10, I wanted to Americanize myself.” However, as he grew up, he realized that these aspects were not mutually exclusive. He notes, “I consider myself a tremendous American patriot, but I do not abandon my Hispanic roots or heritage.” This Latino heritage has inspired him throughout his entire life, but most importantly, he has carried the hardworking immigrant spirit, saying, “This represents hard work and earning my way through my professional career.” Reflecting on his journey, Alex says, “I think I have had an amazing experience as an immigrant.” Flowing from this pride in his culture, Alex has a strong set of values that relate to his upbringing and watching how his parents overcame significant obstacles to provide for their family. Honesty, integrity, and hard work lie at the core of his values. He emphasized, “I consider myself incredibly tenacious in pursuing my goals.” Additionally, family holds incredible importance to him. Alex, a soon-to-be empty nester, has five kids and reflects on how family values are “true in every community, but especially prominent in the Hispanic community, which holds tremendous family values.”

Recognized as a dynamic leader and visionary, Alex Campos is the CEO of Vensure Employer Solutions, the largest privatelyheld organization in the HR technology and service sector in the United States. Under his direction, Vensure has acquired over seventy businesses in the last six years and built an unmatched portfolio of HR/HCM technology, managed services, and global business process outsourcing (BPO). From the early days in his career, Alex started making investments and learned countless lessons as a Latino entrepreneur. However, if he had to sum it up in one word, it would be tenacity. He says, “Throughout my years, I mainly learned the value of tenacity, which is a common theme among entrepreneurs. We’re always looking to succeed, and we always look at a goal.” He also shares how another key lesson he learned was having the ability to be smart enough to pivot. He explains further, saying, “The path to your goal needs to be flexible because not every situation is the same. So, you need to be flexible but also tenacious in achieving that goal.” As a result of these early lessons, Alex has been able to successfully navigate the many challenges faced in his businesses by constantly evolving. Given that Vensure delivers many of its services through technology, and technology has become the number one thing that drives the world, they are always on the lookout for the changes that may come as a surprise in their industry, either through competitors or bad actors. He elaborates, saying, “Staying ahead of our competitors is always extremely important. You don’t want to become irrelevant; you don’t want to become the next Blackberry phone.” When Alex is in the office, he always starts the day with a sense of urgency and readiness to lead his company above their competitors. To accomplish this, he has a very clear understanding of the leadership style he must uphold to inspire and execute Vensure’s mission. He says:

Adding to that, Alex believes that what sets Vensure apart from competitors is their flexibility and willingness to change directions quickly. Within his company, it is clearly understood that one must be able to assess situations, adapt as needed, and properly execute to outperform the competition and achieve a competitive edge. To illustrate this, he shared a study he recently read which showed that “the distinguishing factor between a startup that fails and one that succeeds is its ability to execute. So, we have this thing at Vensure called ‘violent execution,’ which is how I think we stay ahead of our competitors.” The term ‘violent execution’ comes from U.S. General George Patton’s proactive planning strategy that stated “A good plan violently executed now is better than a perfect plan next week.”

“LEADERSHIP IS IMPORTANT TO ME BECAUSE WE NEED TO EMPOWER OUR PEOPLE. I AM A VERY DETAIL-ORIENTED PERSON, AND I GET INVOLVED IN MANY ASPECTS OF MY Driven by this competitive mindset, Alex has a keen vision to maintain a great culture within his company. Although he BUSINESS, BUT I EMPOWER OUR PEOPLE. admits culture is not something you can have a secret formula he also shares, “Everyone who works at Vensure would FOR THE MOST PART, IT’S AN ‘EMPOWER AND for, certainly tell you that this is the best work experience they’ve LEAVE THEM ALONE’ LEADERSHIP ATTITUDE, ever had, so we are certainly proud of that.” While discussing his insights for aspiring Latino BUT I ALSO LEAD BY EXAMPLE.” entrepreneurs, Alex offers this valuable advice: “Always He also notes, “Vensure is very strong about working from the office; we’re not a work-from-home company. I tell everyone we need to go back to pre-COVID behavior. The first person to get to the office and the last person to leave the office is me. I feel that if I lead by example, then everyone else will follow.”

do what you say you’re going to do, even if it comes at a financial cost to you.” Most importantly, nonetheless, he says, “I can’t stress enough how you have to have that will to succeed and not be dissuaded by failure. Embrace failure, pivot from failure, and learn from failure. How you deal with that failure will be critical to your success.” NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2023 LATINO LEADERS 11

ABOUT VENSURE EMPLOYER SOLUTIONS Vensure Employer Solutions was founded in 2004 as Ion Solutions, a professional employer organization (PEO) focused on payroll, workers’ compensation insurance, and workplace safety consulting for construction, transportation, and other blue-collar industries. In 2007, Ion Solutions obtained its first large deductible workers’ compensation insurance policy. In 2008 Alex Campos began investing in the company, and in 2009 the company changed its name to Vensure Employer Services, Inc. Vensure secured its second large deductible workers’ compensation policy in 2010 and began providing PEO services to the temporary staffing industry in California. In that same year, the company also converted its payroll technology system from PayPlus to PrismHR (called HR Pyramid at the time). Between 2010 and 2012 Vensure developed a robust suite of proprietary software systems that gave the company a competitive edge in the staffing industry. During this same time, Alex Campos obtained majority control of Vensure’s shares, and in 2012 he took over as the CEO with 45 employees. In 2018, to meet the growing demand for skilled talent, Vensure partnered with Solvo Global, and in 2022, Vensure acquired Solvo to deliver full global workforce solutions to hundreds of U.S.-based businesses. Vensure Employer Services merged with PrismHR under the Holding Company named Vensure Employer Solutions in 2022. This new entity delivers human capital management solutions for every stage of a company’s growth and complexity. In this same year, Vensure added the Namely brand to its portfolio to expand the company’s technology options to deliver strong HCM solutions for mid-market companies. Today, with over 4,000 employees, Vensure Employer Solutions is one of the fastest-growing full-service HR solutions providers for small and medium-sized businesses in the nation, processing $130 billion in payroll annually for over 90,000 businesses via its direct business and service provider network. The story of Jose Rosario's journey from his humble beginnings in a small town in Puerto Rico to achieving success in the U.S. is truly inspiring. Growing up with a strong work ethic and a deep appreciation for family values, Jose initially had little interest in academia. However, recognizing his natural aptitude for technology and the rapidly evolving digital landscape of the 1990s, he decided to pursue a degree in computer science. His determination and dedication paid off, and he has since become a prominent figure in his field. TODAY, HE’S the Executive Vice President, Chief Information Officer, and Chief Information Security Officer at The GEO Group, a global leader in evidence-based rehabilitation based in Boca Raton, Florida. According to their website, “GEO's diversified services platform provides unique capabilities for the delivery of educational and vocational programs, cognitive behavioral and substance abuse treatment, and faith-based services.” As a proud Puerto Rican, he traces his roots back to a small town on the island. Coming from a close-knit family, his upbringing encapsulates the essence of courage. "My dad worked at a power company for about 30 years as a driver. My mom was the office manager to a construction company for many years," he recounts. Shortly after, his parents had to take control of a failing supermarket to avoid financial hardship and through hard work and dedication were able to return it to profitability and subsequently sell it. Reflecting on his move from the island to the U.S., he recalls his internship at the Department of Energy in Illinois. "I remember leaving in January and landing in Chicago. It was cold, a drastic change from my home." Jose's new life in the U.S. was paved with determination instilled by his parents. His father's early retirement allowed for more time together, creating memories of late-night meals as bonding moments. This strong family presence greatly influenced Jose's approach to personal and professional life. As he ventured into the world of IT, Rosario’s career developed, but it was his commitment that pushed his professional rise. When asked about what challenges he faced as a Latino trying to make a career in IT in the U.S., he adds that the language was the main barrier. He says that most of the people he’s worked with share the same experience, but the great advantage that he had were places he’s lived in like Chicago and Florida, where the Hispanic community is prevalent.

His leadership style at The GEO Group reflects this, nurturing a team that can count on each other without stepping over boundaries. That’s what sets Jose apart, his genuine investment in people. He acknowledges the presence of Latinos in the tech industry but notes a disparity at higher levels: “The issue that I see is that many Latinos in the technology field don’t have enough guidance to climb the corporate ladder.” This is why he doesn't just manage a team; he creates an environment where everyone feels valued. His approach revolves around trust, empowerment, and a belief in people's potential. This personal touch extends even to the toughest moments, as he navigates disciplinary actions while maintaining respect and a supportive environment with the younger generations: “I try to push them to go to the next level”.

“If you look at our line of business, the biggest impact that we have is people. It’s all about helping the individuals that we work for.” Looking ahead, Jose envisions delving deeper into the business side, expanding his knowledge beyond technology. Jose's story is the result of persistence, family values, and the significance of relationships. His journey from a small Puerto Rican town to a leadership role in the U.S. technology sector exemplifies the heights one can reach with dedication, perseverance, and a profound respect for human connections.

C SUITE 2023

RESPONSIBILITY TO NOT ONLY LEAD, BUT ELEVATE On behalf of the Hispanic C-Suite Corporate Council (HC3), I congratulate every man and woman on the Latino Leaders Magazine list to acknowledge the incredible accomplishment as leaders, not only in their company, not only in their industry, but as leaders in Corporate America.

W

e are leaders that happen to be of Hispanic Heritage. It is our professional and social responsibility to not only lead, but create a pathway for others in our companies, our organizations, and our community. That objective should be clear to every executive on the list as we celebrate them, we must also be accountable as it eventually leads a pathway for our children, our legacy, our future. The Hispanic C-Suite Corporate Council (HC3) is the premier organization for Hispanic Leaders in Corporate America. Our mission via the Push Up Pull Up theme is to increase the number of successful Hispanic executives by delivering value to their development, leadership, and philanthropic endeavors thereby strengthening their companies, organizations, and communities. Our mantra “Advocacy, Accountability, Appreciation” will help elevate executives, ensure they value their identity, and recognize their greatness.

As of 2023, the Hispanic community has 20 Fortune 500 Hispanic CEO’s, and our goal is to assist in the elevation of the total to match our national population percentage, which is now at a targeted 100 CEO’s. The HC3 partnership with Latino Leaders Magazine is an important element and one of many partnerships to make our community even more strong, have a more powerful voice, and have many more earned seats at the table. Let’s celebrate our duality of being 100% American and 100% Hispanic. Congratulations Again, Andre Arbelaez President and CEO Hispanic C-Suite Corporate Council www.hc3global.com

BUILDING CONNECTIONS THROUGH CULTURE

MEET PAOLA CORRADA, VICE PRESIDENT AND CHIEF COMPLIANCE OFFICER, PALIG

Paola Corrada is a successful Latina executive who serves as Vice President and Chief Compliance Officer at Pan-American Life Insurance Group (PALIG). Born in the Dominican Republic and growing-up in Puerto Rico, today, Paola identifies as Puerto Rican with some bits of Dominican influence. REFLECTING ON her upbringing, she highlights how being multicultural has made a significant impact throughout her life. “Our parents were big on international travel, plus we had family living in different parts of the world. Understanding and connecting with different cultures was a way of life,” she reflects. “Our family instilled two important lessons throughout our childhood: enjoy new surroundings and seek adventure.” Today, those lessons have influenced her career in compliance. "Compliance is certainly a complex adventure; but it’s the tough love every organization needs. I navigate the intricacies by relating to people during challenging situations and creating connections.” But her journey wasn’t always this clear. While growing up, she explored the idea of different careers. Yet her innate ability to see both sides of a situation drove her to pursue a Juris Doctorate from Louisiana State University, and ultimately a career in law. It wasn’t long before she was searching for a different purpose and found her calling at PALIG more than a decade ago. Since then, Paola has been instrumental in driving the success of the company’s compliance department.

"Compliance was not a popular career path back then, but I was looking for a career change and found the excitement I was looking for in it," she explains. Paola’s depth of experience, years of leadership and passion for compliance and ethics led to her promotion to Chief Compliance Officer. She shared, "This role was my end goal.” In this dynamic position, her expertise and leadership are essential to PALIG’s ability to deliver trusted service, and the company’s aspiration to being a great place to work. Additionally, Paola highlighted the significance of being a Spanish-speaker and connecting with her cultural background daily to engage with colleagues, emphasizing the power of shared heritage for effective communication. Paola says, "I adapt to what will resonate with the particular group I am addressing, whether from the U.S., Caribbean, or Latin America. In the end, it is about creating connections that will help promote and awareness and understanding of ethical principles and compliance while collaborating with teams across PALIG to maintain standards and safeguards." Good mentorship has been instrumental to Paola’s success, “Learning the ropes along the way was inevitable, but it

wouldn’t have been possible without the amazing people I have met throughout my career.” In turn, Paola remains resolute in her commitment to supporting her colleagues. Emphasizing the need for compliance as an integral part of business growth, she expresses, "I want to make sure people understand compliance is part of doing the right thing, and awareness activities are fundamental to driving compliance." While reflecting on what she values most about PALIG, Paola emphasizes, “PALIG provides many opportunities, especially if you are ambitious, a go-getter, and want to grow." She recounts a specific scenario early in her career which involved analyzing and rebuilding a compliance program as part of an acquisition. “The collaborative process uncovered efficiencies and opened doors – but most of all, it imprinted the value of being a change-maker.” Paola shares her future career aspirations, "My goal is to redefine compliance and change people’s perceptions, while contributing to a more culturally aware and integrity-driven business environment. That is my mission." With this goal, Paola is leaving her mark in pursuit of creating a long-lasting, culturally aware, and ethically grounded business environment.

COLLABORATION, PERSEVERANCE AND HARD WORK: SECRET RECIPE FOR SUCCESS A conversation with Rosalina (Rosie) Miranda, Regional Vice President of Operations, PALIG Arianna Villarreal

Courtesy of PALIG

F. Izquierdo

ROSIE MIRANDA, a prominent figure in the health industry, was born in the Dominican Republic and spent her childhood years in New York. Holding an MBA from the University of Miami, she presently serves as the Regional Vice President of Health Operations at Pan-American Life Insurance Group (PALIG). As a young girl, Rosie worked while attending school to support herself and her family’s needs. She shared, “I had to earn the money for what I needed, which taught me the value of hard work at a very early age.” This experience, in addition to her mother’s example, showed her the value of resilience in achieving success, which inevitably helped develop and strengthen her grit and tenacity. She noted, “Everything I have been able to achieve is not due to luck; it has been through hard work.” Beginning her insurance career in a call center, Rosie quickly ascended the ranks through hard work and determination, earning a position in the senior management team before age 30. Now at PALIG, she oversees the contracting and managing of medical providers, leads the medical underwriting, claims payment integrity, healthcare strategy, and medical management in Latin America and the Caribbean. Rosie, a creative force at the company, shares, “I feel like I am a partner in the business, not just working for the business. I have the freedom to create, lead, and change, which I love about PALIG.” While reflecting, she shared her challenges as a young manager, particularly the need to overcome self-doubt, which she later leveraged as motivation for personal growth. She says, “I thought if others can do it, so can I.” Rosie actively sought guidance from those who paved the way before her and grew more confident. She recognizes now the experience has inspired one of her leadership views: “Sharing your journey and knowledge of success and failure with others is key.” It is no secret that Rosie is a proud Latina leader. Her roots, which shape many of her values, have played a significant role in her leadership style. Understanding the connection Latinos have with their families, has inspired Rosie’s a unique approach to meetings. She says, “My team meetings, and sometimes client meetings, usually start with learning about their weekends and family celebrations and milestones. Regardless of the country, connecting with Latino family moments and culture is so appreciated.” Through this approach, she is also constantly looking to improve workplace engagement. As she strives to

work collaboratively with everyone on her team, she shared, "I always ask, what can we do better? How can we exceed what we did the previous year?” Rosie sees challenges as opportunities and is constantly looking for ways to continue innovating to benefit the business. While discussing her future career trajectory, Rosie reflected on the supportive environment at PALIG, stating, “Since joining the company, I have been treated as a colleague who adds value and recognized for my contributions and success.” This ethos, she believes, will continue to drive her career growth and journey. “My strength is making things happen, innovating, and turning challenges into opportunities.” Rosie's goal is to create a lasting legacy of perseverance and relentless dedication. Hence, she shares her advice with the next generation of Latina leaders, saying, "I firmly believe in unwavering commitment, perseverance and determination against all odds. It’s truly what defines limitless potential. As women, we often tend to juggle many different roles, and the thought of ‘doing it all’ can be challenging. But it’s not impossible. It can be achieved through balance, self confidence and being relentless. If others can do it, so can you."

Carlos Cuevas

Marta Reeves is an accomplished marketing professional with profound connections to the Latino community. As the Vice President of Corporate Marketing for Pan-American Life Insurance Group (PALIG), she is responsible for maintaining and strengthening the company’s brand to drive sustainable and profitable growth. RAISED BY an American father and a Dominican mother, Marta has always embraced her multicultural heritage and diverse experiences. Growing up, she lived in various countries with exposure to different cultures, traditions, cuisines, and an array of perspectives. The experiences have taught her many lessons and have offered her the ability to understand cultural interconnectedness while valuing cultural differences. “Having lived throughout Latin America, I bring a deeper understanding to my work. Not only does it differentiate me as a Latina professional, but it has also proven to be an invaluable gift,” she shared. Marta’s career began in operations, but it wasn’t long before she was promoted to a position in marketing and business relations. She shared, “Somebody within the company saw that I could do more and took me under their wing.” Guided by the wisdom of three influential mentors, she immersed herself fully in marketing and business. Most importantly, their knowledge and mentorship helped shape her marketing philosophy. Marta says, “The truth is, in business, you are always marketing something. You are marketing yourself, you are marketing a product, or you are marketing a service. You are marketing a brand promise.” Through her leadership, PALIG has risen to a position among the top insurance companies catering to Latin Americans and the Hispanic/Latino community in the U.S.

Marta also shared a crucial turning point in her career at PALIG following the impact of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, the company’s headquarters. While various insurance groups were halting operations, PALIG persevered, a testament to the leadership team’s strategic foresight and precise execution. The experience inspired a transformative journey including a shift from product centered promotion to enterprise level brand storytelling focused on PALIG’s resilience and unwavering commitment. Marta’s communications and marketing strategy contributed to elevating PALIG and securing a position among the top five insurance companies across the markets that PALIG operates in. In the wake of this transformative experience, Marta’s passion for reshaping the insurance industry only grew. At PALIG, she plays a pivotal role in driving insights-based communications initiatives with customers at the center. She explains, "Understanding our customers’ needs is at the core of our success. I’m driven by the opportunity to authentically communicate and engage with our stakeholders, offering a balance of content that informs, inspires and supports our mission.” As she reflects on her time with PALIG, Marta shares, “I was meant to be here. The support we have as Latino and Latina leaders is innate in the company, and I am blessed to be a part of the PALIG family.” With that in mind, she shares that her eighteen-year journey with the company is far from over.

"PALIG’s growth continues as does the important role of Latina leaders during this exciting time. The beauty of this is that it is in our hands,” she adds. “The sky is not the limit; it is just the beginning."

s one of the oldest business models in the industry, direct selling allows brands to get their products in front of consumers by employing independent distributors who can sell directly to them. For independent distributors, direct selling builds entrepreneurial and professional skills that, in turn, help them earn an extra income and, in some cases, become full-time multi-level marketing entrepreneurs. This business model has historically provided opportunities to people from all walks of life. The flexibility it offers and the ability to be their own boss, set their working hours, and develop their business at their pace continues to be incredibly attractive to people everywhere. According to the World Federal Direct Selling Association (WFDSA), the Americas was the top-performing region in the world, with total sales of more than US$65 billion in 2022 – resulting in a compound annual growth rate of 4% over the last three years, well above the global rate of 2.8%. This success has been driven by more than 30 million independent sellers in North, South, and Central America, who in turn have derived great benefits from the opportunities of the direct selling industry. Hy Cite, in particular, has five thousand distributors in the US who represent 50% of the business. US Hispanics earn greater net income from direct selling than non-Hispanics and offer more positive ratings of their direct selling experience, according to a study by the Direct Selling Association. The study further reveals that US Hispanics involved in direct selling are more likely to say direct selling met or exceeded their expectations and are more likely to recommend direct selling to others.

Building a Solid Foundation for Success

Despite the great benefits that direct selling can offer, the industry has faced an array of challenges over the years. Hence, direct selling professionals must prioritize core values and foster good experiences that customers won’t forget because doing so helps build a solid foundation for success. The optimal way to foster good experiences between companies and independent distributors is to demystify and promote direct selling the way it’s meant to be. The main ingredients required to create a solid foundation for success in direct selling are the following : • Establishing Good Reputation - Good experiences have a positive impact on the industry’s reputation and can boost retention rates. This is even more important due to the increased focus on corporate reputation. It is becoming more of a strategic priority for businesses. According to a Gitnux Market Data 2023 Report, a company’s reputation accounts for 63% of its market value. Therefore, it is critical for organizations to use the direct selling business model to promote best practices to establish a good reputation within their industry and beyond. • Let Your Values Lead the Way – In direct selling, the key to success relies on independent distributors. When they are out in the market selling to customers, their selling tactics should reflect the values of the company they represent. When core values such as integrity, honesty, and excellence are demonstrated by direct selling to independent distributors, customers feel appreciated - leading to brand loyalty and commitment. At Hy Cite, when onboarding a new independent distributor, Hy Cite requires the new distributor to acknowledge and sign off on the Direct Selling Association (DSA) Code of Ethics to reinforce the importance of the ethical values of the direct selling industry as part of the execution of the terms and conditions of the Independent Distribution Agreement.

• Connecting with Industry Peers - Operating in a silo can be detrimental to the success of any company. It’s imperative to connect with industry peers and other professional groups. Networking provides the opportunity for direct selling professionals to cultivate relationships with other peers and discuss common business challenges and goals. Industry groups, such as the Chamber of Commerce or the Direct Selling Association, provide sharpening tools for independent distributors, employees, and executives alike. They help professionals stay abreast of industry trends and ensure best practices.

Path Forward in Direct Selling

The path to a new era in the direct selling industry requires that organizations continue to deliver for their customers, independent distributors, and employees with values that reflect good practices. In Hy Cite’s case, the company has been championing good practices and making strides in the direct selling market for over sixty years. The organization has provided significant entrepreneurial opportunities for thousands and leads with values that customers appreciate. Integrity and honesty are embedded throughout our organization and to ensure that, all distributors go through Ethics and Compliance training via our Digital Platform Academy, which also offers continued training opportunities around the pillars of distributions which reinforces fair practices in the business. Through this platform, distributors can also earn additional certifications that contribute to their development and help them remain aligned with our values and practices. As the industry evolves, going about direct selling the way it’s meant to be will allow the market to reach its fullest potential.

RESILIENCE:

KEY TO OVERCOME CHALLENGES CARMEN SAN SEGUNDO, GLOBAL MARKETING AND COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR FOR ESG AND CSR, IBM What challenges have you faced while on the road to success? CSS: On the road to success, I faced many challenges but two of the most important ones have been moving geographically and across industries. My journey has taken me to eight cities across three different countries. Although each movement was hard, they all provided me with new perspectives and enriching experiences, helping shape me as a leader and as a person. Interacting with different cultures has allowed me to foster a more inclusive and collaborative work environment while developing a broader point of view that has helped enhance creativity among my teams. A separate but similar challenge came as I changed industries, which required adaptability and being open to new paradigms. For me, it was key to be able to identify similarities, be open to learning, and embrace differences in these roles.

backgrounds each day, and to connect with them personally and learn from their varied perspectives.

Do you think that your Hispanic heritage influences your professional life? If so, how? CSS: When I think about my professional life, I definitely appreciate the influence of my Hispanic heritage. It is a wonderful strength and perspective that I can bring to each role. In my view, Hispanos have always been adventurous people. Within my family, several people have emigrated for career opportunities. My father is an entrepreneur himself who has grown his career in Spain and Latin America and has always been an inspiration to me. I credit my heritage with my willingness to travel and try new things, and the ability to converse in Spanish, which is one of the most spoken languages in the world. Secondly, I believe Hispanos are strong and resilient people in character, which helps us adapt to How did you arrive to your current role challenges, and keep fighting. I also feel lucky to to be brave and make mistakes, as it is the only work with people from all nationalities and way to grow.

How do you think new generations of Hispanics are going to shape the future executive leadership teams? CSS: The US is built on a rich heritage of immigrants bringing change and a willingness to dream. And, specifically, Hispanos are an important group of current and emerging leaders across the workforce. In the US only, Hispanos will make up more than 20% of the labor force by 2030. This is a major opportunity. Also, Hispanos are native creators and dreamers and I think this is so vital at this moment as Artificial Intelligence (AI) is emerging across industries. The creativity of the next generations of Hispanos will be important to ensure AI shapes a better world. Where do you see your career going in the future? What innovations in your industry are you most excited about? CSS: It’s hard to tell what the future will hold for me, but I always see myself growing and exploring in my career, while embracing new inventions and paradigms. For example, it is already clear that AI is going to have a profound effect across industries. And I see this as an opportunity for marketing and communications leaders to harness their creativity and be more effective.

RESILIENCE, DETERMINATION, AND DISCIPLINE: A HISTORY OF SUCCESS Courtesy of Toyota

Share some important facts about your background, family origin and education CB: I was born and raised in Bogota, Colombia. My dad is from Bogota and my mother from Medellin. They met in Bogota and, as a couple, they just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. I was fortunate enough to grow up in a stable family, with strong moral values, and a profound sense of citizenship. As a middle child, I grew up giving my older sister a hard time (as all middle Childs do) and playing a ton of sports with my younger brother. My parents were able to give me access to a great education. I graduated high school from Colegio Major de San Bartolome which is one of first schools ever founded in Colombia (1604) with a great tradition and history behind it and, upon graduation, I transitioned to Pontificia Universidad Javeriana where I completed my Law School studies and earned my JD a few years later.

CARLOS BECERRA VICE PRESIDENT OF SERVICE OPERATIONS, TOYOTA

What made you pick your college studies and majors? CB: Growing up, I was fascinated with topics such as philosophy, history, and sociology. I gravitated towards these topics more than science or mathematics. In addition, at the time (80s and 90s), Colombia was living one of its worst chapters in recent decades, polluted by violence and civil unrest. In the early 90s, the Country’s Constitution was being reformed, and that led to many changes that for multiple reasons informed many of my personal, social, and professional viewpoints, and encouraged me to get involved. Law was the next logical step.

What have been constant values and skills you have worked with during your professional career? CB: As many professionals who transition to the States, our journey is often demarcated and informed by unique factors before and after the move. Before, I knew that I was destined to do; Graduate, establish my professional brand, stand my own law firm, and get involved in social or political endeavors. I had vision and ambition; determination was not lacking either. However, once I transitioned to the states, my view of the world changed dramatically: The move was abrupt, I did not speak the language, I was not acquainted with the culture, my legal background (which adhered to a totally different legal system) became an impractical tool, and I needed to reinvent myself. Despite the fact, the values were always the same: Resilience, determination, and discipline. I knew I needed to accelerate my learning curve and it was clear to me, in the initial stages of my journey, that I needed to heavily invest in proficiency and cultural acclimation. Once I regained my footing and transitioned to a professional environment, it was all about understanding the company I was serving, figure out a way to expand my radius of influence and involvement, and problem solve. I embraced a simple mantra: In the absence of leadership, I rise. Organizations are complex ecosystems, imperfect by nature, which are intentionally or unintentionally evolving, in which there is always opportunities to fix, innovate and drive. I have never waited for work to come my way. Quite the opposite, I have the tendency to jump in where there are opportunities to make a difference. The more complex the challenge, the better! Here is the beauty of it: Once you fix or drive something small, you build the courage and confidence to pick something slightly bigger and as the years go by, you come to the realization that such playbook has given you the opportunity to lead major transformational initiatives. How did the opportunity to work for Toyota came? CB: I used to live in Florida and once my daughter was born, my wife wanted to be close to her Family, which I adored. That encouraged us to pack our bags and move

to Phoenix. Once we settled, I joined a small bank supporting their Credit Card Division. A few months later the bank decided to sell its portfolio to a third party, and I saw the writing on the wall: It was time to move on. Toyota was recruiting at the time, and I had the fortune to join the organization in 2003. Can you share facts about your role and position at Toyota? CB: Today, I have the privilege to serve as the Vice President of Service Operations. This is the area of the organization that supports all activities once the customer secures a loan financed by Toyota Financial Services. We focus on creating a great and frictionless experience from the moment the customer signs the contract and up until the account closes. I am responsible for defining the strategic priorities that inform our collective roadmap and oversee all the support activities that make our Experience Centers successful. They include but are not limited to Technology Development, Compliance, Training, Knowledge Management, Quality Assurance, Workforce Planning, among others.

we are, the opportunities will be limited. On the other hand, if we exclusively market our personal brand and the substance isn’t there, we’ll lose all trust and credibility. Now, for those who have earned and be given the opportunity to join managerial and executive roles, our job is to pave the path for others, and pay it forward. There are tons of activities that could be pursued to achieve this goal: Coaching, mentoring, advocacy, exposing opportunities, getting to know those whose substance is shining, and ensuring the marketing channels are strong or created. As Latinos, we often struggle with themes that are quite similar and, in many instances, a helping hand is all we need to overcome our insecurities, unlock our potential, and learn how to best navigate our organizations.

HEALTH

CHILDREN’S HEALTH

DR. NORBERTO RODRIGUEZ-BAEZ A self-proclaimed ‘poop’ doctor, Norberto Rodriguez-Baez, M.D., has served as a gastroenterologist at Children’s HealthSM for more than two decades. He specializes in the care of children who have problems with their liver or digestive system, such as abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea or inflammation of the intestines. He is also a Professor of Pediatrics and Associate Dean for Student Affairs at UT Southwestern Medical Center. Samantha Griffith

DR. RODRIGUEZ-BAEZ says one of the greatest measures of his success is a child’s contentment. Devoting time to know his patients over the years, watch them grow and be part of their lives is the reason Dr. Rodriguez-Baez decided to dedicate his practice to kids. When he meets with patients, he talks to them not only about their medical conditions or helping them understand their diagnoses and treatments, but it gives him an opportunity to learn about their lives, how they’re doing in school and how they’re getting along with their friends, for example. Working in gastroenterology offers him a unique window into patients’ lives and the lives of their families. “It gives me a sense of happiness and satisfaction when I see them doing well,” Dr. Rodriguez-Baez said. He also says listening to his patients is important, as it helps him learn more about them. He underscores the pivotal role of food in shaping a family’s dynamics so he uses this topic to enhance his understanding of them and tailor his care to meet their needs. “Food is a central part of a family’s culture. Is a family active, do they cook together and are their meals diverse? This all plays into my care. The more information I have about a patient’s home life, the better care I can give,” he said. 68 LATINO LEADERS NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2023

A GOOD DAY FOR ME IS WHEN I’M ABLE TO DO ALL OF THE THINGS I ENJOY AS A DOCTOR.

The beloved doctor’s friendly personality is contagious. One of his hobbies includes Latin dancing, and he brings that energy with him to the clinic. “Sometimes I dance with my patients, if they let me do that. I think it helps them feel welcomed. It also helps me connect with my patients and their families, too,” said Dr. Rodriguez-Baez. What does being a Hispanic doctor at Children’s Health mean to you? NRB: It means a lot. Estoy muy orgulloso de ser Latino. Many patients and families come to the clinic and are thrilled to have a doctor who not only communicates with them in Spanish, but also shares their culture and background. There is an intact connection. They feel more comfortable expressing themselves and more compliant with the treatment. I want to serve as an inspiration to my patients. I want them to know that they can fulfill their dreams and they can also be a doctor and serve the community the way I do. Tell me about your journey that led you here to Children’s Health? NRB: I grew up in Puerto Rico. I’m the oldest of five children, I am the first one to graduate college and the first one to be a physician. I always wanted to work with kids, so I did my training in pediatrics after medical school. I went to Stanford University, where I did my training in pediatric gastroenterology. Then I moved to Dallas, Texas, where I have been working here at Children’s Health for 22 years. I have seen a lot of growth, not just within the city, but also notable growth within the hospital. However, our mission of providing excellent care for our patients has remained constant.

Why is supporting research important ? NRB: Research is an extremely important aspect of the care we provide to our patients. We have acquired a lot of knowledge and understanding of diseases and treatments, but there are still a lot of unanswered questions we need to investigate. For example, determining which medication is more effective to treat a specific disease, or why certain patients are more susceptible to particular diseases while others are not. It’s through research how we can answer those questions. I encourage families to participate in research because the knowledge we gain through research is going to impact the care we offer to other patients in the future. Many of the treatments we’re offering now to our patients were discovered through individuals who voluntarily participated in research in the past. When they support medical research, they are helping build the future of medicine. What is a good day for you at Children’s Health? NRB: A good day for me is when I’m able to do all of the things I enjoy as a doctor. I think I have the best profession in the world. I’m a physician and enjoy taking care of patients. I’m also a teacher. I enjoy teaching medical students, nurses and people who work with me. I love looking for answers, so I enjoy doing research. I have had the privilege to participate in several clinical research studies that have been able to identify new treatments and cures for diseases. Every day offers an opportunity to give back to the community and people I serve. I’m just happy to have the opportunity to do what I do. NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2023 LATINO LEADERS 69

LA AURORA 120TH ANNIVERSARY LIMITED EDITION PREFERIDOS

For quite some time, I've cherished the La Aurora Puro Vintage Limited Edition Salomon as one of my favorite cigars. Obtaining one of these exquisite cigars has often proven to be a challenge due to their limited availability. However, La Aurora has recently unveiled another limited-edition masterpiece that takes their game to a new next level.

T

This special edition commemorates the inaugural Preferidos cigars of 1903, featuring replicas of the original tubes that encapsulate a meticulously crafted new blend. Together, these elements create a harmonious blend of aroma, flavor, strength, and tradition, accentuating the quality of Dominican tobacco, the expertise of their team, and the rich history of La Aurora. La Aurora 120 Anniversary is a full Dominican puro wrapped in a beautiful Habana 92 seed leaf; the wrapper is selected for its aromatic attributes and consistent burn, and the fillers come from the Cibao Valley. Adopting the Preferidos 1° Double Figurado shape, every aspect adorning the box symbolizes a part of La Aurora's legacy. Of particular significance is the León Family Creed, a guiding principle since 1903, shaping every facet of La Aurora's identity. Understanding the creed is tantamount to comprehending the essence of La Aurora. Limited to 2,500 boxes, this release offers a unique chance to savor 120 years of La Aurora's unparalleled craftsmanship.

TASTING NOTES: Cocoa, Peppery, Cinnamon, Tropical Fruits, Coffee Beans. Crafted by Master Blender Manuel Inoa, this delicacy opens with a cedarwood aroma, a testament to the cigar's aging. The bold start paves the way for sweeter undertones, transitioning into a delightful combination of sweet cocoa and creamy coffee beans, culminating in a velvety vanilla finish that establishes perfect balance. As the burn progresses, expect a flavor profile transformation, with dry fruit and rich tropical notes taking center stage, complemented by subtle hints of wild honey and earth to provide a balanced and memorable conclusion to an exceptional smoking experience. Torres “Milmanda” 2017 Chardonnay. ($98) •It is a very hard to get wine. And one of the best whites from Spain is this delicious, aromatic, dry and crisp Chardonnay. It opens with green and tropical aromas with pear and guava notes giving way to a well-balanced and medium bodied wine. Stony and mineral expression of Chardonnay is the best description of this beauty that also displays insinuations of vanilla and dried apple. A good selection of Spanish cheese and olives will make this wine glow and express its wonders. Château Gloria Saint-Julien 2016 ($57)) •For a Bordeaux this young it is, of course, a little shy but complex from the beginning; showing elegant and sophisticated balance, full body and defined Saint-Julien character with cherry-earthy-plum notes. It has a little green pepper background and layers of spice followed by black pepper and ripe berries. A classic and delicious wine, although it lacks explosive expression, it has a beautiful balance and finesse. David Arthur Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2019 Old Vine ($145)) • Impressive concentration of ripe fruit aromas from the beginning. Powerful and muscular with perfumed chocolate, black cherry, and licorice notes. The wine is an absolute impact of sophistication with fruit driven character and mellow style. There is green pepper, pencil shavings, toasted coffee bean and anise hints. it keeps evolving and provides a delightful and long aftertaste. Pure Napa here!!

Benanti “Rovitello” Etna Rosso 2013 ($65) •I have been drinking wines from Sicily for some time now and I find them delicious! This one is a hard one to get, and is showing some aging character with nutty, earthy, and mature fruit notes. The wine is balanced and ample in mature and ripe berries, plum and some licorice notes. For me it is somehow at its peak but could also have some good 10 more years to go. Soft, elegant and complex, with a mix of fruit and minerality that explodes from the glass. CBouchard Pére & Fils Buaune Clos Saint-Landry Premier Cru 2016 ($86) • Astonishing wine with pear, fig, and melon notes. The palate is creamy with tropical accents and insinuations of vanilla pound cake, white flowers, lemon curd and caramel. Medium bodied with a long finish and a sophisticated personality. A rich white Burgundy to drink over white fish dishes or a top-quality sushi. Gran Enemigo “El Cepillo” 2018 Cabernet Franc ($120) • DThis wine is a real legend from the Argentinian Andes, Fabulous expression with a big nose and bold fruity notes. Some lactic hints open the way to muscular structure and deep plum, cherry pie and autumn spices. The Cabernet Franc shows some of its herby-green-peppercorn notes along with a fruitiness that is impressive. Harmonious, sophisticated, and memorable! This one could be drunk with any steak, chuleta, or rib eye on the grill. Merry Christmas!
