Martins tre bästa utflyktstips i Timrå l Åstön. I love the sea, and you can walk around on the cliffs and enjoy the beautiful nature. If you’re feeling stressed, a perfect way of dealing with it is to just sit down out there and gaze out to sea. l Canoeing on Ljustorpsån. The whole family did that for two days last summer. We had a tent with us and spent the night there. l Söråkers Folkets Hus. This building is like a heart, not just for Söråker but for the whole of Timrå. If it isn’t warm outside there’s another kind of warmth there.

MARTIN HÄGGSTRÖM

FACTS: Martin Häggström Age: 40 Lives in: Söråker Family: Wife Inger and sons Felix, 14 and Herman, 12

The artist Martin Häggström has remained faithful to Timrå for most of his life. Although he lived in Sundsvall for a few years, he returned to Söråker when his children arrived. ”We live just 100 metres from the sea. That’s sheer luxury!” Martin has been involved with music throughout his life, but it was not until three years ago that he decided to make a full commitment. ”Dad was going to retire from his joinery business, and my brother and I had to decide whether to take over or not. And I felt I had to give music a real chance.” Around the same time, he entered the music competition Svensktoppen nästa, and won the final. Since then Martin has issued

a CD, has had several shows of his own and has appeared at lots of corporate events, weddings and so on. He also takes jobs as a compere, and in the autumn he might perhaps issue a hard rock ballad as a single. ”I like variety, partly for my own development but also so that the public can see and hear different sides of me.” It sometimes happens that he accepts job offers down south, and he would not have any objection to commuting to work for a

9

time if, for example, he was given a role in a big musical or something like that. But he would not move. ”No, Timrå is a really good place to live, especially for the children. In smaller places people are very friendly.” ”There’s a wonderful go-ahead spirit here, and everyone tries to help one another. We have a good climate with many hours of sunshine, we’re close to the sea and the airport and yes, it’s quite simply luxurious.”

FISHING IN THE REALM OF ’WILD HUSS’

Indalsälvens delta.

The coastal delta at the mouth of the Indalsälven is one of the largest river deltas in Sweden. The area is a nature reserve with delightful bathing beaches and a network of channels – and superb fishing. In 1796 the delta became much larger and changed its appearance when the lake of Ragundasjön was drained in a disaster caused by excavations ordered by the merchant Vildhussen (’Wild Huss’) for a new log floatway.

BEWITCHING LANDSCAPE On their way down to the sea, the Ljustorpsån and the adjoining Mjällån meander through agricultural and forest landscapes with steeply sloping shores, high sandy banks and dense woodland. The two rivers form part of the same fishery conservation area and have excellent stocks of sea trout. The valley of the Mjällån with its bewitching ravines and towering riverbanks is one of ten areas nominated for the title of geological heritage by the Geological Survey of Sweden. There are plenty of brown trout, Arctic char and rainbow trout in the smaller lakes, rivers and streams in the wilderness of Lögdö. Before Håkan Håkansson came to Medelpad in 1850 he worked as a farm-hand. But at the age of 33 he went on to better things. He became a log-floating manager and was appointed as inspector and overseer at the timber sorting facility at Lövfudden at the mouth of the river Indalsälven. And a surname that sounded too much like a small crofter was no longer good enough, so out went Håkan Håkansson and in came the logfloating manager Håkan Dahlmark. Things then started to go well for Håkan. He married Klara Höijer from Njurunda, and together they had a son. Mr Dahlmark, as Håkan was now addressed, had an annual income from the Indalsälven log-floating company of 6500 riksdaler and a home at the log-floaters’ residence in Berge. Through

his newly acquired position in the upper levels of society he got to know and spend time with gentlemen such as Hubert de Besehe at Lögdö Bruk, Managing Director Lilliestråle, Bünsow at Merlo Slott, Lilliesköld and Södermark and guests from further afield such as Simson & Mason from the British Isles. It was perhaps in such company, over a few glasses of punch and a few cigars, that Dahlmark heard about some practical jokes from the foreign guests, which inspired him to dream up the myth he would soon himself create. After a long day of inspecting the side

stream of the log float on the river Ljustorpsån one spring day in 1874, Håkan Dahlmark paid a visit to his close friend the iron magnate de Besehe at the Lögdö ironworks. Dahlmark borrowed the iron magnate’s new double-barrelled shotgun, as he had thought about taking a detour around Lunde on the way home. Dahlmark, who has a very keen huntsman, had seen twenty or so capercaille beyond the blast furnaces. A freshly shot capercaillie would be something to show his

wife Klara on arriving home. Dahlmark glimpsed the ancient fortress away at the Lunde estate, and down to his left the water in the tarn of Lundetjärnen was glistening as though it was silver. Perhaps it is best not to walk with the gun broken over your arm, Dahlmark thought, and he made a movement to close the barrel. Then suddenly, in the corner of his eye to left of the road in a northerly direction on the way towards the ancient fortress.... It must be a...? Yes, wing feathers like on a large capercaillie, the most splendid tail feathers .... BANG! Dahlmark fired in mid-movement and his eagerness made the metres to the capercaillie go as the quickly as the dancing of the logs down the Indalsälven. But, Dear Lord, what kind of animal is that? Dahlmark thought. In front of him was an animal as if poised to attack, and with the head, body and legs of a hare but with the wings and tail feathers of a capercaillie. It looked as though it weighed ten to fifteen kilograms, and that fully stretched out it would be more than a metre in length. But just as suddenly as it had

This is the true story of the ’skvader’, which Dahlmark then recounted in the lounges of the Knaust Hotel and in convivial company for years to come. But were it not for the yeoman Nils Nilsson, Dahlmark’s hunting companion and brother-in-law, who made sure that the local heritage centre and Olof Högberg received a ’skvader’ after Dahlmark’s death, the story would probably have been forgotten. But that is another story. Mikael Kuhne

The Östrand pulp mill in the municipality of Timrå produces 425,000 tonnes of totally chlorine-free bleached softwood sulphate pulp. Östrand also produces 95,000 tonnes of chemical thermomechanical pulp (CTMP) for hygiene products and packaging. The pulp is principally used for SCA’s own products, for example feminine hygiene products, printing paper, packaging and paper hand towels. Some of the production also goes to other paper mills, in Sweden and abroad. The recovery boiler commissioned in 2006 generates 500 GWh of green electricity a year. The Östrand mill is therefore self-sufficient in both electricity and heating.

NORRPLANT

Permobil came into being more than 40 years ago in a basement workshop at the home of the Swedish inventor, entrepreneur and doctor Per Uddén in Timrå. Today Permobil is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of electric wheelchairs. Tens of thousands of people throughout the world use Permobil products.

Few towns have such good communications as Timrå. The E4 runs like a backbone through Timrå. The airport is a short car journey north of Timrå, where there is a new travel centre and a newly renovated railway line. At Söråker there is a harbour for transport to the rest of the world.

The foundation for the forests of the future is laid in what is perhaps the world’s largest plant nursery. At Norrplant in Timrå around 100 million Scots pines, spruces and ridgepole pines germinate every year, enough to cover 100,000 football pitches. It is not without reason that the spruce is the emblem of Medelpad.

n the (second) best business climate in northern sweden in 2012! Very encouraging, and it gives us plenty of energy to keep working on new, growing, and profitable businesses in Timrå. since the last survey we have gained better ratings for the way in which we inform our companies. This may be due to the fact that we have developed our monthly breakfast meetings into what is now the breakfast sofa. It may perhaps be because we send newsletters to all the companies four times a year. It may perhaps be because we are now making more company visits. It’s probably a combination of all these. we work together – business owners, public servants and politicians.
