Editors Heart... I originally wrote this piece for my friends on Facebook, and, given the feedback, have decided to share it with our L3 readers. I hope this inspired you, and when it does, share your story with me and the world! Light, as in being illuminated, is a matter we sometimes take for granted. Because we see it, we assume it is everywhere until we become aware of the places it is not. Our purpose is to be a source of Light for each other and for the world. When we shine, darkness cannot prevail. Darkness is a mean spirit that puts false thoughts in the minds of some who cannot see, or have not become Light. Most of us use our talent(s) and don’t even realize we are shining; some use their presence in their community, and others use a combination of both. Usain Bolt brought light to millions around the world with his athleticism; Chronixx with his music, and you, just by being you … stepping out on your platform to say ‘this is what I do and I love it!’ I encourage you to turn on your light for others to see. No matter what your profession, your background, your geographic location; dare to let your talent show. As simplistic as this sounds, you shining, and me shining and he shining and she shining means that there is so much light, darkness is overcome. It means that people who are in bondage thinking that evil is their means of conquering a situation, will be returned to original form: love. Your smile is Light, and in those moments is when your Light shines most! Shine on family … shine on!

#BRTWeekend With Beenie Man!

d

By: Prism Marketing

Imagine a weekend getaway with a few of your best and favourite friends. Now imagine your getaway including your favourite performing artists … and wait … it gets better … over a period of 4 separate months! Yasss! In operation for 6 years, #BRTWeekend is the ultimate destination day-party series. Now expanding to multiple locations, patrons from around the world take a road trip to party, vacation and revel in each other’s company for a weekend. Inspired by Caribbean culture, each festival includes 6 uniquely themed events, all-inclusive with free drinks and food, across a multi-day span, in a beautiful resort location. Dubbed the ultimate destination day-party series, the promoters of the popular BRT Weekend are upping the ante for the new year. The event has now expanded to incorporate the Dominican Republic, New York Tri-State Area, Los Angeles, Atlantic City, Florida Keys and the Turks & Caicos islands. The first installment scheduled for May 3 - 6 in Punta Cana, Dominica Republic will feature dancehall kingpin Beenie Man as the main headliner among other acts. This comes in the wake of previous appearances last year by fellow A-listers Aidonia and Popcaan. Beenie Man is scheduled to perform on Sunday, May 6. Despite grieving the passing of his grandmother and hospitalisation of his mom. Beenie Man remains upbeat and is definitely looking forward to delivering an explosive set come May. “Beenie Man is definitely looking forward to this engagement. BRT Weekend has become a staple on the social calendar especially for the Caribbean and North American nationals and continues to grow with each staging. So this is a very important platform to connect with the fans. Therefore they can expect nothing but the best when he hits the stage in Punta Cana.” – Beenie Man’s management said. Just before #BRTWeekend, the Dancehall King performs in the twin-island republic of Trinidad & Tobago for an engagement on April 14. Returning to British mainstream radio with his latest single ‘10 Metric Ton’ featuring Stylo G. Plans are also afoot for a double video premiere by the dancehall hitmaker for ‘Lifestyle’ and the ‘New Wave’ Medley soon. The visuals were Shot by director Steven Bernard. Nesbeth’s

New Album Coming

By: Prism Marketing

Always seeking to change the status quo Nesbeth, one of Jamaica’s most prolific Reggae luminaries is taking an innovative new approach to the production and release of his upcoming debut album. Titled A.M.E.N, the acronym derives from the name of his late wife Ann-Maire Elliot Nesbeth which holds very special meaning to the singer. Considering the sentimental value and also being his first official album, Nesbeth said he wanted to do something special instead of merely outputting the album via the traditional method of a major label and hope for the best. Hence the introduction of Crowdfunding. What is Crowdfunding? It is a method of raising capital and giving people a hands-on experience through the collective effort of friends, family, fans, and individual investors. This approach taps into the collective efforts of a large pool of individuals—primarily online via social media and other platforms—and leverages their support networks for greater reach and exposure. “Though I have no issues with major labels I opted instead to work directly with my fans. Some people may think this is a weird concept but the idea is this platform will allow them to invest directly in my album, provide me with quality feedback and updates, and for their investments and feedback, they will receive special rewards (eg. autograph promotional paraphernalia, exclusive news, pre-released album, discounted dubs etc.). One of the greatest advantages it also allows you to see and feel the true essence of your fan base.” -Nesbeth Added. Though the concept is relatively new to Jamaica and the Caribbean Diaspora, Nesbeth believes the platform which is more popular in North America and Europe will help to change the way music is marketing in the region and wants to be a pioneer for that change. Slated for release this Summer. For Nesbeth, as much as for his fans, music has also been the best remedy for personal and social healing. Since it brings out an empowering force that every person has within them. It is also through music, namely through this new A.M.E.N. album, that Nesbeth wants to share his healing experience with those who, like him, have also dealt or are dealing with loss and other tribulations, with those who believe in a better tomorrow, and, ultimately, with everyone who couldn’t live without the soothing and refreshing touch of great reggae music. Here Comes BOOM Clash! By: Zakada Milton

Every Thursday night (technically Friday morning), at the All Stars Head Quarters compound in Olympic Way (a suburb of Kingston, Jamaica), Sounds bring their best dubplates and 45’s, cut on the best riddims, and armed with their best speech to eliminate each other in true Sound Clash style for a prize of $1,000,000 JA Dollars. Thanks to strong sponsorship, this is BOOM Clash! Using a format of 3 judges who are significant members of the Reggae and Dancehall music fraternity (Nigel Staff from Ruff Kut Band, Esco da Shocker – artist and producer, and Rodney Campbell, Actor), competing Sounds must meet criteria which earns them points. The Sound who has the most votes from the judges, moves on, the loser goes home. “What I like about this format” says veteran Canadian Sound Clash promoter Ron Nelson of Ron Nelson Productions, “is that the structure is similar to World Cup Soccer and the sweet 16 Basketball bracket in the NCAA. What this shows is that Sound Clash is a sport and each Sound is a team. The use of judges reduces bias – a Sound can’t come to the dance with 100 fans and sway votes in their favour, but yet fans can participate. That makes it fair.” Selector Fat Kat, who has competed in Clash and hosted Clashes says “there is room for creativity in the Clash world like what we’re seeing with BOOM. They are in their own league and we as fans really like it. There will always be Irish and Chins World Clash which is the most prestigious, and BOOM fits right in, adding their excitement.” Excitement, the online buzz that is generated from fans around the world, especially fans from Toronto, Canada, has allowed BOOM’s live stream to reach as many as 1,500 fans online tuning in to the event. Watching the Clash from start (2am EST) to finish (4am) is worth it for Clash aficionado Tiffany who has not missed a Clash since it started. Though she lives in California, she is well versed with competitors and their scorecards thanks to the live stream. “I tune in at 11pm my time, and watch the Clash with my online friends who are mostly in Toronto and different parts of the world. When we like what we hear, we type emoji’s or even leave comments. I feel like I’m a part of the competition knowing people can see my comments.” Both Ron Nelson and Fat Kat point out that a part of the reason why BOOM is able to stream for free is because of sponsorship which plays a key role in the events success. “Our expenses to produce a Clash are much higher than in Jamaica” begins Ron. “The cost of the venue and the liquor permit alone makes it hard to have a Clash in Canada” adds Fat Kat. Both agree that with sponsorship in place, the stream can be made available for free. Until that time, pay-per-view revenue helps cover expenses. “It’s only a matter of time before the concept comes to Canada. We have the market and the numbers, and the experience to host BOOM here!” BOOM Clash has invited World Clash winner Rebel Tone to perform in the past, as well as Twin Star Sound. This year, Royalty Sound was the only Canadian invited, though No Limit Sound is a competitor who has Canadian ties. Canadian performing artist and Sound man Bigga Boss has had a number of his dubplates used by Jamaican Sounds at BOOM Clash, more so than any other Canadian artist. Tune in to BOOM Clash every Thursday night at 2am EST (technically Friday morning). The competition runs until May 10th, 2018 where the winner will be declared and will go on to compete at Reggae Sumfests Heavyweight Clash! https://www.facebook.com/officialboom L3 Magazine | April, 2018 ft. She also penned “Where The Wind Blows” and “A Little Party Never Killed Nobody” for The Great Gatsby film and soundtrack and the hit single “Lose To Win” for Fantasia. Being raised in a Caribbean home, all types of the culture’s music has had a huge influence on her singing and amazing writing career thus far. As an homage to her love for Reggae, Andrea covered her own renditions of two songs that have always been her favorite, June Lodge’s “Someone Loves You Honey” produced by SupaDups, and Carlene Davis’s “Stealing Love.” Released through God’s Cryin’ / VP Records, she hopes to reintroduce these classics to current reggae lovers in this generation. twitter: @andreamsongs Soundcloud: andreamsongs Instagram: @andreamsongs L3 Magazine | April, 2018 ft. Stonebwoy’s Epistle of Mama By: NATASHA VON CASTLE | Editor-In-Chief

When you think of a Superhero, you think of Superman or Batman. In this era, your Superhero is not dressed in a red or blue or black cape; he doesn’t wear tights, and doesn’t have a mask. One of today’s Superhero’s comes from the heart of Africa, Ghana to be exact, and he’s using a frequency to reach you. Don’t put up the ‘bat signal,’ our hero, Stonebwoy has already heard your call and is helping you through sound! Sitting down in his studio, I spoke to the artist who is singlehandedly unifying North America with Africa and the world. He is humble, his eyes very telling and his heart is open for all to see; all you have to do is look. The world is right to be excited about Stonebwoy!

L3 Magazine | April, 2018 ft. Stonebwoy Pg. 63

NVC:

Stonebwoy, you are one of the few artists whom everyone, and we mean every, one, wants a piece of. We’ve heard you on Reggae collaborations, Dancehall collaborations and Soca collaborations – Sean Paul, Demarco, Kabaka Pyramid, Fayann Lyons to name a few. These things don’t happen unless you’ve got the right touch! What is it about you that everyone wants?!

S:

(Laughs) I’d rather say that I am from the Motherland and all these genres of music, that have their roots coming from the Motherland, through acts like myself, who have dedicated their time and purpose and vision to be able to represent for all these genres who find their roots in Africa.

The Soca Super Star having getting that enlightenment from the music that I turn out; the mindset behind it, it’s very attractive which awakens their spirit. It’s like you already know something but someone says something that hits that spot within you. I know there are more of me [artists], but I am grateful to be the leader of the pack that can go to the Reggae aspect and kill it properly; go to the Reggae aspect and kill it properly, come to Afrobeat, kill that too and still be standing proudly as an African artist who is acceptable everywhere I go. That is what I think is attracting them to me!

NVC: We just mentioned you having the ‘right touch.’ Before we go further, how would you describe your sound, your brand, and the reason why your fans are sticking to you like glue?! S:

I can only trust and believe that my fans, who go even beyond fans; these are people that I see as my brothers and sisters who share my same similar stories with me, through the music, and way of life (I am alive and living), I share what everyone is going through which includes me. I am not different than anybody else. I try as much as I can to simply or complicate the music so much so that they [the fans] can find themselves in there, so that’s why they relate to me. They don’t just dance to my music, they feel it in their hearts and the message that the music comes with. My fans are my supporters who show me maximum love. Always.

NVC: Going back in time, your song “Go Higher” (which now has approximately 1.8 Million views on YouTube and counting), showed us that the same discrimination we face here, is faced there, and everywhere. Is this something you experienced personally? S:

Absolutely. Everything I sing about I have a personal experience with. It’s either something I’ve been through, or it’s something I have firsthand information about.

NVC: What brings us together today is your third album ‘Epistles of Mama.’ Have people caught the fact that an Epistle is holy … a letter written by an apostle in the New Testament? Mama was an apostle wasn’t she?! S:

Yes. You get it! She is my hero.

L3 Magazine | April, 2018 ft. Stonebwoy Pg. 65

NVC: Your lead single “Mama” (both the original and the Sax version) is more than a song … the lyrics are part of the blueprint that everyone aiming for success must follow. Why do you think God designed the road to success this way, and why is it that Moms always know best?! S:

First let me say that Mama always knows best. She is the one who is selfless enough to instill all of the morals and the principals into children. She, Mama, carried that child for 9 months so a Mother’s love towards a child is the thing that can never go wayward. When that child is raised properly, they will bring forth all the fruits of the spirit which is love, peace, joy, patience, kindness etc. That is what I see in a Mother … who is not just a physical representation of the person who brought us here to earth, but she is a spiritual representation of how we came into being. None of us have witnessed how the earth became the soil, but we have seen how we were created from the womb. That is God creating us from the womb, and only through Mama…

NVC: The song “Suit and Tie” is profound. ‘Those’ people really don’t care do they? You and Kabaka come in with your Superhero cape to save people from being misled! S:

That song is really relevant in out times. Living in Africa, we see several injustices and several failures of the system when democracy comes to play because of its’ bureaucratic and political approach. Everything goes by influence. When you’re a super power things just go the way you say they should go because of privileges.

I grew up in the community called Ashaiman which is one of the ghetto’s and you know the experiences I’ve had has allowed me to see. Growing up as a child, I have always respected people who put on suit and tie – white collar jobs. Those are the people that I saw, and I felt like that was the limit. Whatever you do, you have to aspire to put on a suit and tie and work from 9 to 5. That means you ‘made it’ in life.

When the winds of life took me on a different journey, where I’m here today, and maybe performing in another country tomorrow (by the grace of God), and I’ve never put on a suit and tie, all the mental, all the things they told us and tried to teach us; life showed me that those things are not a guarantee. These men in the suit and tie is a ‘make-up’ they put on. It’s not real. It’s a form of protocol … which sometimes intimidates.

Look at a man in a suit and tie, and look at a man in jeans and a shirt. Who suits the system? Who’s going to be chosen first? Who looks the part? But for all you know, that is just an appear ance. Nothing is going on – they’re dealing with us the way they have to deal with us (laughs), and sometimes it’s not their fault, but once they put on that ‘uniform,’ they have to conform to the rules of ‘that’ system.

L3 Magazine | April, 2018 ft. Stonebwoy Pg. 67

con’d ... These are the same people that are coming to help us. Because of their level of education, they lead us to a certain future where we are all supposed to be satisfied, but then, you find out that when they assume that post, everything changes. Is it that the suit and tie has a certain ‘curse’ that comes with it? Once you assume that post, you change to their rules which are set. It is unfortunate. It is we the people who give them the power and empowerment, and they end up not meeting our needs. That is what the song is about…. NVC: You’ve introduced us to new voices: Efya, Burna Boy, AKA, Damaris, the list goes on. Was it difficult to decide who to feature? S:

It wasn’t too difficult. By the time I came up with the creation of the song, I could already feel who compliments the track. It was never about who was big or who was small. It’s always about who is making waves that suits a song. That is the reason for Kabaka Pyramid being on “Suit and Tie” as an example. You can feel the song – the blend, even if you don’t know the artist!

NVC: Your song “Praises” is as moving as Morgan Heritage ft. Buju’s “Psalms 23.” I’d like to know what you were experiencing when you wrote that song – which in my opinion is perfect! S:

I was filled with gratitude. Every level of my journey, I am very conscious of the things around me, and can never take anything for granted. I am appreciative of every tiny thing because I come from nothing. The song is a constant reminder of a greater force. I just always have to give “Praises” to the most high – the creator.

NVC: You have deservedly won several awards and have been featured in mainstream media. None of those accolades has changed you. You appreciate them, but there’s no change?! What tickles you? S:

(Laughs) I am grateful that you can feel that. It is not intentional that I don’t feed those energies; it’s just that I don’t want people to buy into me for that fact – the awards. I want people to buy into me because I am them. The bigger the accolade the more humble I get and what tickles me is knowing that my brothers and sisters are just as successful as I am!

NVC: We have a friend in common – King Lagazee from HITZ 102.9 FM! How important has the radio medium been to your career?! S:

From the beginning, Lagazee has been supportive. As for radio on a whole, it was really important because it was what we had at that time. Social Media back then was not what it is today. Radio was the prime medium to get music to the masses. That also authenticated the artist … once you got on radio (and I should say it wasn’t easy to get on radio), then that was it.

L3 Magazine | April, 2018 ft. Stonebwoy Pg. 69

con’d ...

As for Lagazee, I was buzzing in the underground, and he was buzzing on the radio (and still is). We were at the same stages in our careers; me wanting to be a bigger artist, and him wanting to be on a bigger station. We vibed about that and prayed about that, and years went by, and we both achieved our goals. He is a brother to me. All the demand that was made of me, I shared with him by being on his platform and vice versa. He is a big brother!

Wow! Big respect to L3 … you can’t break this down any further, Life is Life, love is LOVE and if we speak the right Lyrics, if we encourage each other with words, that is going to make the world a better place. We’ll have purified hearts and minds … a better world!

Ichechi’s

Journey in Music By: JENNIFER MENSTER | Music Editor Photography by: Damien Delgado

It seems very unusual, from the outside looking in, to see a girl from Mississippi singing Reggae; until you look a little deeper. On closer view, we see Ichechi’s roots and realize that she was born to a musical family. Take that connection a little further, we learn that her name literally means God will prevail, so, when we put these two elements together, it makes sense that she is one of the chosen to perform! By the way, her name is pronounced E-che-chi!

L3 Magazine | April, 2018 ft. Stonebwoy Pg. 77

JM:

Coming from the south, and being influenced by southern sounds such as Gospel, R&B and Blues, maybe even Zydeco, one would think those genre’s would be your beat. You chose Reggae / Caribbean music. Why is that (and we’re not complaining)?!

I:

I grew up watching and listening to my Father sing around the house every day, and he is Jamaican, so naturally I was influenced by him and chose Reggae / Caribbean music to perform.

JM:

Your appearance, suits your music: Earth, natural, wholesome. Is that how we should feel about your music?!

I:

Yes! My music is very worldly. I like to promote positivity, Love, positive energy, understanding etc. Music happens to be my medium and I suppose the way I dress is a reflection of that energy and my music!

JM:

Your single “Simple Seduction” tells of a girl being pulled into the love of a man. Tell us about that single and how it came about!

I:

I wrote the song based on what I was going through in relationships. The song spoke about me taking love very seriously and falling in love hard. Whenever you’re in deep love, there is a destruction that can take place. Sometimes love can cause damage to both parties. The song was really a question to the person I was with.

I recorded the song, and at the end of the recording, the production team felt it needed a feature. We thought about Pressure Busspipe, so we asked him, and presented it to him, and he loved it. He immediately recorded and it took off. I’m grateful for the response and the support and it hasn’t been officially released yet … it’s coming! https://soundcloud.com/ichechimusic/ichechi-simple-seduction-ft-pressure

JM:

Rhythmically, it is worldly, not just Reggae, so it’s a song that everyone around the world can groove to. Was that by design? Did you go into the studio and ask for a world beat?!

I: The first version of the song was produced by Jamplified. I felt the song needed more of a worldly sound. I went into the studio with Jon Fx and we both collaborated which is what you hear now. We brainstormed. Jon came up with more earthly sounds, which we infused with the original track and this that you hear now is the finished product. We both love it, and yes, this track was ‘by design!’ JM:

Another single, “Love Conquers All,” is special because you outright tell people you woke up and prayed for them! We don’t get that very often. What was the inspiration for that song?!

L3 Magazine | April, 2018 ft. Stonebwoy Pg. 79

I:

The way “Love Conquers All” came into being is through Adrian “Blizzy” Baxter who wrote the song. He welcomed a child into the world, and that changed him. He wrote the song based on what he wanted to see the world like. He wanted his baby to see the world not filled with hate but filled with love; the only thing that can conquer hate is love. Not too long after he welcomed his child, I gave birth to my child, so the song became really special to the two of us. It’s a prayer for the world and the love we want to see in it.

JM:

As a newer rising artist, it is sometimes hard to get the crowd on your side. You’ve been able to do that (when you opened for Gyptian and Beres Hammond just to name a few). What so far do you think is the secret of your success?!

I:

I think it’s important to be original and stay present. I try my best to engage with the audience and not copy other people. I’m not afraid to be who I am and give the world that. I guess the secret is me!

Opening for Gyptian and Beres allowed me to introduce me to the crowd. I was speaking to them about me and my music, so they really got to know Ichechi. I think that connected because the look on their faces said ‘you came out here for me!’ It did as much for them as it did for me, so yes, that day I gained a few new fans!

JM: The name of our magazine is L3 and each L has a meaning. The first is for Life, the second for Love and the third for Lyrics. What general advice can you give our readers on Life, Love and Lyrics?! I:

Well, I would say live life to its’ fullest but love what you do on this earth. Love what you’re here for; love your purpose. As for Lyrics, be true to yourself. What you do and say speaks. When you put all of that together you have nothing but success!

Nkosi

A Reggae Seed By: NATASHA VON CASTLE | Editor-in-Chief Photography by: MALI BRITISH

People who are in the business of ‘growing,’ know that the best fruits come from the best seeds which are placed in the best soil. Ireland Records knew that when they began to work with Reggae artist Nkosi, and now his music, produced by Ireland Records, is enjoying radio play worldwide. We sat down with Nkosi to ask a few serious questions such as ‘do you know how impactful your music is / has become?!’ By the way, his name is pronounced En-Co-See!

L3 Magazine | April, 2018 ft. Stonebwoy Pg. 83

NVC: There are some people who are just getting to know your music right now, and they LOVE what they hear. Others have known you for years and say ‘it was just a matter of time.’ How do you see you in the industry right now? N:

Officially I have been in the industry since 1998. Gregory Isaacs is the first person to produce music for me. I can understand why people think I’m new but I’m not … now just happens to be my time to emerge for the world to see. In terms of how I see me, well, I see me as a vessel. I’m bringing messages to people through music.

NVC: I introduced you as being a seed because I see how your music is feeding people who are looking for organic ‘food.’ Tell us about your journey in music, and how you’ve come to make the music you’re making! N:

It’s been a long journey for me, and one that I have appreciated walking. Roots music is my kind of music and my kind of sound and a lot of people associate Roots music with organic and whole some food so I understand why you see me that way. I make music based on reality … I want people to know that they are not the only ones going through struggles and facing hardships. We have a lot more in common than people think. I’m keeping it real which is where the ‘organic food’ element comes in.

NVC: When and or how did you come to meet David Ireland of Ireland Records? N:

I’ve known David for a long time. We live in the same area. We are so close, more than friendship we are like family; a really tight bond. October, 2017 is when we started to do business officially which is him being management and producer. We have the right formula … it’s working. He has the music and I have the lyrics so us working together is the right thing!

NVC: The two of you clearly have a vision and have assembled a great team to steer your career. For those who don’t know, what is the vision?! N:

The vision is to be a household name. From we say Nkosi, and Ireland Records, everyone knows who we are and what we do and why we do it. Also, our vision is to take the music to the four corners of the earth. One thing the people agree on, is everyone needs good music to motivate them in their day, and to inspire them when they feel troubled. In every sense, when you play a Nkosi song, or listen to an Ireland Records riddim, fans must feel ‘upfull!’ That’s the vision!

NVC: Your two hit singles “Dem Nuh Real” and “Struggles” are doing very well in terms of fan support and radio support. Tell us where those songs came from … what was the inspiration? N:

For the song “Dem Nuh Real” is personal and “Struggles” is in general. Both Man and Woman have to be strong no matter what’s going on, and in being strong they will overcome the struggles. As for the first song, “Dem Nuh Real,” it’s more a relationship song. Yuh done know I’m still involved with that Sistren, and had to use the songs to say what I wanted to say … you have to sift to find

L3 Magazine | April, 2018 ft. Stonebwoy Pg. 85

good people especially in these times. The music video shows you an example about people not being real with the passport angle. Nowadays, it is really hard to find genuine people. In the video we use the example of 30 pieces of silver which is what Jesus was sold out for. So who am I, or you, or anyone else that people will not hurt?

NVC: As the people get to know you through your music, they will become more demanding. They are going to want to see you on stages in various countries. How many more singles will you release before you start traveling? N:

That will depend on the demand of the people, and it depends on the timing. We have songs that have been recorded and are ready to release, but because of the success of “Dem Nuh Real” and “Struggles” we’re pushing those for now. I am very encouraged by the response from fans and radio jocks. We debuted “Dem Nuh Real” on Reggaeville and on social media such as whats app and the feedback has been great. We began getting a lot of inquiries for dates so we’re combining demand with timing, then we travel!

NVC: The name of the magazine is L3 and each L has a meaning. The first L is for Life, the second for Love and the third for Lyrics. What general advice can you give our readers on Life, Love and Lyrics? N:

For Life, you have to be yourself. Be true. For Love, be true and genuine, and for Lyrics, be open minded when you read. Love is Life and Life is Love!
