Editors Heart... At some point in time, we have to take a moment to ask ourselves why we are here. Why are we here on planet earth? What is our purpose, and what is my purpose? Why was I selected to be here at this point in time, and not in another? We are Souls who inhabit planet earth, gathered for the experience. In order to have an experience, we must contribute to that event, which makes the experience, and is a part of a greater whole (collective experiences). Events are never one sided or singular; they require the participation of others – you and me. When you look at the impact of the music from your favorite artists, you will see that it’s your experience with their music, and their experience making the music, that meet at an intersection which connects to the whole. The whole in this case are other people around the world who are having the same experience you are having, all guided by familiar entities called ‘time’ and ‘purpose.’ Time and purpose introduced me to Lisa Hyper of whom I am now a huge fan. When interviewing her, she shared her reasoning about what it is to be a BOSS, not knowing what I was going through, but saying everything I needed to hear. We were both in the right place, at the right time for that moment. I am able to share this with you because possibly, these are messages that you need to hear / read. You wouldn’t be able to had it not been for Lisa recording her music, and me writing about it, and you wanting to know more about Lisa. This is the inter-connectivity of music as it relates to time (you being here right now), and purpose (Lisa making music which is a part of what she was born to do). The Universe makes everything work in the right time.

Simon Fraser

University’s Danceh

hall!

Contributed Jamaica-born, Vancouver-based dancer and choreographer, Mikhail Morris, has embarked on a new venture – he’s teaching a new course on Jamaican dancehall—the first time for this style of dance to be taught as part of a university program—at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia. Morris, 28, is teaching “FPA 120: Introduction to Dance Forms: Contemporary and Popular Subject: Dancehall History and Fundamentals”, at the Vancouver campus. His love and passion for dance started at the age of ten where he pursued training and performance in high school. He was a competitor for five years with the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC), and his repartee with the Arts flourished with a spot in the televised competition ‘Dancing Dynamite’ (2008) where he placed second overall. Teaching the authenticity of Dancehall at City Dance Corps, which happens to be his most passionate style of dance, allowed him to organize and create his own workshops such as his solo show, ‘Footsteps Across Canada’ which toured the country. His vision to build his own dance organization with the help of his Colleagues, while educating others has come to fruition at Simon Fraser University. The course is a combination of theory and dance. Morris created the curriculum to teach the socio-historical factors that inspired the creation of reggae and dancehall music and culture. Students attain a better understanding of Jamaican culture and living experiences expressed through the actual music and dance. Students learn and practice the dancehall dance steps and listen to the music to contextualize the lyrics, and concepts for the steps. Using dancehall vocabulary as a foundation, Morris said he grew up around dancehall culture and has seen how people fought to celebrate it. Often associated with “low-culture” due to historical political tensions in Jamaica, it has been a challenge for the dance to gain acceptance as a true and valid cultural art form. Thus, for SFU to have created an actual course that teaches the history and fundamentals of dancehall, is a huge step in the right direction. There are very few university institutions that have this kind of programming available for their students. The history of Jamaica with its convergence of peoples from varied cultural background created a solid foundation for the emergence of dancehall; dance and music. This same history has also made it possible for dancehall to extend its boundaries beyond the small island state of Jamaica to the rest of the world. SFU offers Jamaican Dancehall, Hip Hop, and Bhangra in the three Vancouver/BC Lower Mainland campuses. These three cultural forms reflect the growing interest that students have in alternate dance techniques. The course runs in the fall semester from September to December. Current or prospective students who are interested in the course can connect with the FCAT department at fcatadv@ sfu.ca. Dancehall music is currently on a rebound and can be found in a large portion of current mainstream music with artists like Drake, Rihanna, Justine Bieber, Chris Brown, and more looking towards the genre for musical inspiration. Don’t Call Me Cupcake...

Contributed It all started with a bottle of rum… Don’t Call Me Cupcake! Emerged in 2012 when long time friends Reheleh and Tova decided to leave behind the mundane life of their 9-5’s and began the journey of fulfilling their dreams. The idea of opening a bakery featuring the best tasting gourmet cupcakes, cookies and cheesecake using fresh and simple ingredients was their mission, and it had to be accomplished! With a few tweaks to Tova’s mothers original rum cake recipe and a bottle of J. Wray and Nephew White rum in hand, they ran with it. The result undeniably the best tasting rum infused cupcakes on the planet! Team L3 visited the flagship store on Broadview Avenue in Toronto, to sample the mini treats baked by childhood friend Tova. The hype about these cupcakes is real and truly deserved! Our order of Toffee-Vanilla, Toffee-Chocolate and Shredded Coconut came in the cutest pink box, and were loaded with so much flavor the ‘cake’ of the cupcake was as much of a treat as the icing! Seeing the expressions of happiness, Toya said “this is exactly the reason why we do what we do … just to see the looks on your faces!” Tova, the only girl of 6 siblings found her Passion for baking and entrepreneurial spirit from her not so traditional Jamaican mother who introduced her to a world of creativity through very imaginative and daring cooking and baking techniques. It was not unusual to come home from school to find one of her Greek, Italian or East Indian neighbours in the kitchen with her mother to give a lesson in their traditional baking techniques. Tova did not know it then, but it was there in the kitchen with her loving mother her love of baking blossomed. There she learned that only the best and freshest ingredients, along with a touch of love resulted in the most delicious treats. At Don’t Call Me Cupcake! we believe in keeping it simple. Taking no shortcuts, baked from scratch in small batches, using only the freshest ingredients is the concept that drives this bakery. Committed to providing the best tasting cupcakes available, DCMC! has taken cupcakes to another level. While we were there, several customers came into the store to pick up, place and sample new orders. One gentleman named John, sampled the sweet treats at a company Christmas party and has been a repeat customer since then. Rashinder, said he sampled the goods at a house warming party and wouldn’t consider going anywhere else for his cupcake fix. Melanie, who hosts monthly tea party’s said she orders a cake for the tea party, and then sends each guest home with a cupcake to enjoy later. All of us are not wrong! We highly recommend Don’t Call Me Cupcake! … they are simply one of the best! Connect or place your order >>> http://dontcallmecupcake.com/

Havana Meets Kingston

Contributed Just a brief span of balmy Caribbean Sea separates the island nations of Cuba and Jamaica. Yet, despite their proximity, each country boasts its own distinctive and uniquely wonderful musical traditions: traditions of incomparable potency and celebratory verve that have evolved, over more than a century, almost completely independent of each other. Until now. In a world-first undertaking, Jake “Mista” Savona journeyed to Havana in 2015 with a handpicked band of Jamaican musicians and established collaborators in tow - including Sly & Robbie (Peter Tosh, NoDoubt, Grace Jones), hand-drummer and percussionist Bongo Herman (Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, The Abyssinians), and Winston ‘Bopee’ Bowen (Roots Radics, Inna De Yard) to record the pioneering musical event ‘Havana Meets Kingston’ alongside some of the best and brightest names in Cuban and world music. Among the players joining Savona and his Jamaican collective at Havana’s immortal Egrem Studio - the site of global phenomenon Buena Vista Social Club - were celebrated Cuban percussionist Changuito (Los Van Van) and Buena Vista Social Club players Barbarito Torres and Rolando Luna, along with Félix Baloy (Afro-Cuban All Stars), plus dozens more. All told, Havana Meets Kingston deploys the world-beating talents of more than 50 musicians drawn from halfa-dozen nations, recorded over 10 heady days of creative freedom and discovery. At once palpably reverent of Jamaican musical heritage and Cuba’s rich Son, Macusa and Danzón traditions, Havana Meets Kingston is an irresistible celebration of Afro-Caribbean flavor. Comprising original compositions along with reworked classics, the resulting album weaves an expansive alchemic tapestry, enmeshing Latin beats, dancehall rhythms, rock-steady and deep roots reggae. The enormity of Savona’s achievement with Havana Meets Kingston was foreshadowed by the ample buzz attending lead single ‘Carnival’ - a dose of Jamaican syncopation and rapid-fire reggae vocals featuring Randy Valentine (Major Lazer) and Cuba’s Francisco ‘Solis’ Robert. The EPK video for the album racked up a massive 1.5 million views and 20,000 Facebook shares in just one week, while the single itself stormed the iTunes charts. It’s a clear taste of the groundbreaking musical celebration to come. A richly textured songbook that swings effortlessly from the cigar-and-rum-perfumed atmosphere of Old Havana to the humid abandon of a Kingston Sound System party. Havana Meets Kingston weaves together Spanish-language ardour and entrancing Jamaican patois, spinning a musical web that transcends language - speaking to nothing so clearly as hips and heart, in equal measure. Savona & The Havana Meets Kingston Sound System (featuring Randy Valentine and Solis) are confirmed to appear at Island Vibe Festival on North Stradbroke Island, Australia in October. A full-scale tour featuring the core players from the project is planned for March 2018. One thing is certain: as Aza Lineage and Birdz-I promise on dancehall anthem ‘In the Ghetto’, Havana Meets Kingston is certain to “make ya skank off ya feet.”

Sound Clash at Sea Champs Mighty Crown!

By: Flair Lindsey | Photography: Ajamu Myrie Thousands of revelers experienced the exciting and entertaining art form of Sound Clash first hand and as delivered by world renowned sound killers, Mighty Crown, who nabbed their 3rd victory at “Sound Clash at Sea” -- Welcome to Jamrock Reggae Cruise’s official Sound Clash. Key players including Mighty Crown, David Rodigan, Tony Matterhorn and King Turbo magically upheld clash standards as they drew for awfully witty speeches, jokes, costume changes and dub specials cut just for the cruise! David Rodigan’s speeches were primarily presented from a historical perspective. Combined with true sound boy killing dubs, classic and rare tunes, David Rodigan was declared a gem from early. In what has been billed as his first official clash in a few years, the “Rudeboy Gentleman” justified why he has staying power and can compete with the best of them. His generation transcending love and knowledge of the music, plus creative and often times funny commentary, will be forever etched in the minds of the thousands on deck for the clash. Fans and competing sounds alike found themselves between chuckling and taking notes during the famed UK selector’s set. The 2016 and 2017 World Clash champs King Turbo came in extremely hard at “Sound Clash at Sea,” showcasing their authentic clash craft. In fact, dropping wicked and non-stop Chronixx, Freddie McGregor, Jr. Gong and big artist dubs from early yielded colossal forwards for the Canadian sound. Notably, King Turbo, who landed a coveted slot in “Sound Clash at Sea” due to their World Clash victory, left a lasting impression on the massive crowd. Mighty Crown was a crowd favorite from the clash’s start with roars of laughter erupting as Sami T asked “Matterhorn, why are you even here?” Between Sami T’s hilarious speeches, which kept the audience in stitches, and penetrating dubs, “The Far East Rulaz” sizzled in rounds 1 and 2. Further, their counteractions to tunes played by King Turbo and Matterhorn gave them musical advantage. One thing for sure, the Mighty Crown and Tony Matterhorn rivalry, which first sparked in the 2016 clash, went full throttle at this year’s “Sound Clash at Sea” -- giving way for some of the night’s most entertaining moments. Tony Matterhorn has been a force in the sound system arena for two decades. Without question, time in the game worked in his favor. The crowd roared and gave some of the night’s biggest forwards to the skilled selector who took no shorts when it came to cussin’ Mighty Crown. Matterhorn chatted and unleashed knock out dubs that the crowd loved. With King Turbo and David Rodigan’s elimination in earlier rounds, the fiery selector once again secured his position in a “tune fi tune” against Mighty Crown, a flash back to 2016! The “tune fi tune” was an incredible finale to the clash. The crowd held on to their seats as the explosive tunes erupted. Although Matterhorn was well received through out the clash, his steam ran out during the final stretch. Ultimately, Mighty Crown out shined Matterhorn 4-0 in the “tune fi tune,” scoring a 3-Peat victory of “Sound Clash at Sea.” Mighty Crown once again proved they are a renowned champion sound, sound clash again scored on the Welcome to Jamrock Reggae Cruise. The massive, diverse audience was treated to an authentic and fun taste of sound clash!

Music We Lov / Single / Randy Valentine

ve

/ Happiness Station The New Narrative by Randy Valentine is not just an album. If you thought you were going to receive a typical ‘body of work’ in which Randy performs to riddims that are shared by other artists, you are wrong. If you thought you were going to receive typical lyrics that describe a party or a beautiful booty or even the ‘bling’ that adorns ones wrist, well, you’re mistaken. Randy begins his New Narrative by singing “I spent my whole life searching for myself inna dih books / but the greatness of I story has somehow been overlooked…” backed by a chorus of voices singing la-la-la whom I deem to be our ancestors saying ‘yes Randy, we’re singing with you!’ Hard hitting lyrics continue with “life is like a movie / it moves me” from the song “Vigilant.” “Happiness Station” is a proclamation about where the artist is heading. Because we’re riding with Randy, that becomes our destination as well and oh how sweet it is! In the midst of the madness happening in the world, we need songs like this that shift our focus to what we can do for ourselves: take control of our lives and make “Happiness Station” our destination! So far Randy has released select tracks from his EP, and each one has connected with his audience. Produced by Royal Order Music and Loud City Music, the artist and his musical team prove once again that all are in sync with each fan listening. They know what we need and are giving it to us. New Narrative is a modern day classic. Its’ songs will play 5, 10 and 20 years from now. Parents today will introduce Randy’s music to their children who will grow up listening to seeds which grow to bear correct fruit; not the genetically modified ones that exclude us from the narrative, but the real fruit that acknowledge who we are and our contributions. We will have more on Randy’s EP in the January issue. In the meantime, stream the artist on SoundCloud >>> https://soundcloud.com/randyvalentine

Marshall / Social Media Coming on the heels of ‘Spontaneous’, his newly released 40-track mixtape featuring An9ted Entertainment affiliates Alexx A-Game and Samboni, Reggae Luminary Bugle has now turned his attention to the ‘Social Media’ scene. Known for his prolific writing skills and thought-provoking compositions, the ‘Cherish Life’ hitmaker has joined forces with fellow entertainer Wayne Marshall to tackle the pandemic trends of ‘Social Media’ in a song of the same name. Produced on the Marley-owned Ghetto Youths International imprint ‘Social Media’ addresses a number of topical issues including the advantages and disbenefits associated with the popular platform. In a recent tabloid interview, Marshall, now working on his upcoming album said the idea came to him one night during his slumber. “I had the melody and I was ‘vibing’ the tune on my guitar. I went to bed and dreamt about it, and in that dream, I spoke to Bugle and I said ‘we need to do this song’. When I woke up I shared it with my wife Tami. I called Bugle and he said to link him. I went to his studio and we had a prayer and then went into the recording booth,” Marshall explained. Bugle also corroborated the series of events citing that how the project came about was almost superlunary. “Many times we see things happen in life and we wonder why, but it’s just divine works so you don’t even try to question it most times and I think this song is one of those instances.” - Bugle added. Despite not officially released the song has been making quite an impact on the airwaves and is steadily finding its way onto the playlist of numerous top-tier disc jocks across the diaspora. “The feedback has been tremendous and it seems to resonate well with the people because in this era of technology, a lot of people are not social but they love the media.” - Bugle intimated. Meanwhile, with a full roster for the Yuletide season, the Bugle is expected to depart the island in the weeks ahead for an assignment in Guyana. a / Breezy Though they have no professional expertise in meteorology, 4th Genna recording artistes Aidonia and Govana have issued an advisory to the entertainment fraternity to expect some strong ‘Breeze’ this Christmas. The forewarning comes in the wake of a whirlwind performance at the finale of UWI Integration Thursdays bolstered by their newly released single ‘Breeze’, a collaborative effort that has taken the FM airwaves and social scene by storm. Produced on the 4th Genna Music/J.O.P imprint the hypermasculinized track has been dubbed a solid follow-up to their 2012 effort ‘Run Road’ with its jocular groove and overkill of witty lyricism. Currently saturating the space with tracks like Fire, Yeah Yeah, Hot Tool, Gyal Clown, Shallow Grung and Loco both deejays says this is something the fans have been requesting for some time now. “As you know Aidonia and I did ‘Run Road’ in 2012 and that went to No.1 on various charts for several weeks. Since then the fans have been requesting more collabs from the camp but nothing happens before the right time. I was using that time to learn the business and hone my skills. So now we link up again___ it’s going to be a ‘Breezy’ Christmas.” - a seemingly jocund Govana explained. “Right now we just let the music do all the talking__ how the Christmas look? ‘Breezy” - Aidonia added. Though not clairvoyant, Govana says based on current trends he forecast the song will do very well over the festive season and advise fans to look out for a lot more audio and visuals from the camp in the foreseeable future. Meanwhile, Aidonia continues work on his debut album while Govana is focused on his upcoming EP, both projects are slated for release next year. and Christmas For the Yuletide season, fashionista and burgeoning chanteuse Tosh Alexander has assembled a star-studded cast of musical heavyweights for the presentation of her latest body of work titled, ‘An Island Christmas With Tosh & Friends’. Presented on the ‘CoworkJA’ musical imprint with distribution rights courtesy of Zojak Worldwide. The project takes the format of a five-track EP covering several of the most renowned Christmas classics as the songstress serves up some prodigious renditions with the help of accomplished compatriots Christopher Martin and Romain Virgo. The standard is even further amplified with the enlisting of production virtuosos Joshua ‘Flubz’ Jones, Andre ‘Suku’ Grey, Karim ‘Stainless’ Thompson, Dale ‘Dizzle’ Virgo, Keniel Delisser and Kemoy Allen. Aiming for the best quality the recordings were done at Bugle’s An9ted Entertainment Studios and Agent Sasco’s Diamond Studios respectively. Alluding to the project Tosh said, “Christmas is definitely my favourite time of the year. From the lights to the carols and the overall spirit of the season; it’s a time where everyone comes together and it truly makes me happy, so I wanted to reflect that in these Christmas carols chosen for the EP. When you hear them I want you to have that same feeling of happiness and warmth.” Similar sentiments were echoed by renowned industry heavyweight Robert Livingston, “Love the idea behind this Christmas album. Christmas is for family, it’s about hearing your favourite carols and this is a great approach. Tosh has an amazing voice and I think she’s a good ambassador for the music and can represent the songs well.” - he added. Slated for release on December 8, the EP will be available worldwide on all major digital platforms but can be pre-ordered commencing November 24, (consumers will get a bonus track). Upon official release, physical copies will be made available via the various local music outlets. No stranger to the music scene Tosh who relocated to Jamaica last year is currently riding high with the single ‘911’ featuring Reggae royalty Kymani Marley. During her sojourn in the U.S, she also worked with a plethora of international stars such as Pharell Williams, Busta Rhymes, Nicki Minaj, FloRida, Fabulous and The Game. n / Large Rapper Cadence Weapon releases his new single, Large. Serving as the follow up to Don’t Talk To Me, and the critically acclaimed,My Crew (Woooo; Large is the third single from Cadence’s upcoming self-titled album, set for release on January 19, 2018 via eOne Music. Produced by Chef Byer and Tr-wubblenaught, Large serves as an ode to doing everything in the biggest way. Often being put in the box as an underground rapper, Cadence Weapon says the single is an “anthem of independence. It’s all about brewing out of that box and being whoever I want to be, creating my own wave and doing it big, in my own way”. The upcoming album features appearances from Deradoorian, Blue Hawaii, Brendan Phillip and Casey MQ and tracks from producers, Kaytranada, Francis Got Heat, Jacques Green and Harrison. The 12-track album is a reintroduction to Cadence Weapon as an artist, through his new music, and he’s excited for the world to experience this new beginning. About the album, key themes include personal freedom, self-improvement, dancefloor politics, micro aggressions, the condo boom, technological miscommunication, buyer’s remorse and the end of the world. The direction of the album was influenced by Cadence’s experiences DJing loft/afterparties in Montreal. The album was mixed and mastered by Toronto DJ and producer, Freeza Chin, while vocals were recorded at Dream House Studios. Focused on songwriting, Cadence was inspired by the lyrics of Steely Dan, Robert Wyatt, Gil Scott-Heron, Harry Nilsson, Randy Newman, Martin Newell, Ian Dury and Joni Mitchell, and recorded over 80 songs while working on the album, each featuring a different style. The record follows 2012’s Hope In Dirt City, which was Cadence’s second to be nominated for a Polaris Music Prize. In 2009, Cadence was appointed Poet Laureate of Edmonton, and later recognized as Canada’s “most creative” rapper, where he has consistently exhibited a passion to take rap into new and unexpected directions. I have attached his bio and the latest announcement for more information. Hope we can connect on this soon! ve

nd Aid Pag3y is a 23 year old Reggae Artist, his government name is Rasheed Page, and he was born on March 3rd, ironically, the third day of the third month. To Pag3y this represents mind body and soul hence the 3 in his performing name “Pag3y. At an early age in his life Pag3y started exercising his musical talent by singing songs while doing chores or just by being alone as a result of him being an only child. Pag3y’s first attempt at committing lyrics to paper was at the age of 12, and by 16 he was already recording and producing his own records. While attending Munro College, where he completed his high school studies, Pag3y balanced school and the groundwork of a solo career by recording music in and around local studios whenever he got the chance. Pag3y’s main desire is to help spread the truth and aid in enlightening those who do not know better. He strongly opposes the statement “ignorance is bliss” as he believes people should know the truth and to pag3y the truth comes from within; awareness of self as life is a journey. Pag3y places emphasis on lyrics, melody, harmony, message, presentation and performance as those are critical elements of music to him. In 2015 Pag3y released a project entitled “I AM”- with the support of his M.I.L Management team (Event Coordinator/ Road & Business Management/ Promoter) which comprised of 9 songs explaining the starting of his journey in the music industry. In 2016 Pag3y and his team created a band the Kingston 7 and has been performing his “I AM” project live in different places and has taken over the UWI Mona Campus by storm. Pag3y performed two songs from his “I AM” project at Redemption Live 2017- Bob Marley’s Birthday Celebration, Good morning as well as Jungle, one of his highlight performances, helping him to move off of the UWI Campus. Pag3y is currently in studios working on a project to be dropped in 2018 featuring artists such as Koro Fyah from the Bebble Rock Camp, Girl and Mello Voice. Morgan Heritage Avrakedabra!

By: NATASHA VON CASTLE | Editor-In-Chief | Photography: Courtney Crow

MH

L3 Magazine | December, 2017 ft. Morgan Heritage - Pg. 61

Morgan Heritage is pure Avrakedabra! Every word spoken, has come into existence, beginning with their Father and Icon, Denroy Morgan who predicted that they would be one of the best Reggae groups to take the stage. That came true. They set their sights on making great music and touring the world. That came true. They even set a goal of winning a Grammy … and that came true too! There is one Morgan Heritage goal that is hidden in plain sight. Their goal is to make music for their fans to enjoy for eternity, and to perform their music so that listeners absorb every lyric in their Soul. Scheduling made it difficult to connect with all members at the same time, so, taking to the skies, I connected with Mojo Morgan en route to Hawaii! NVC: Musically, Morgan Heritage has known where we the fans need to go before we knew where we needed to be. Your past catalog with “Down By The River,” “Psalms 23” with Buju and “She’s Still Loving Me” are only 3 examples. How do you explain knowing what we need before we know we need it?! MM:

I think for us being fans of music and paying attention to the curve of what people like and where things are going, we’re not afraid to take a chance. Like when we did the Mount Zion Riddim with Jah Jah City, Jah Cure and Bushman and Ras Shilo and Element, the Mount Zion Medley; no one was making live music. Sly Dunbar looked at us and laughed and said ‘what are you gonna do with that?’

After we did that riddim it was a huge success … we created the ‘Don’t Haffi Dread’ album, at Bros studio in Ocho Rios, and the rest was history. For 2 years after that people were taking down the walls in their studios and putting in live booths. So sometimes it’s just about taking a chance on yourself as an artist and not being afraid to bend that curve and not follow in the line of what everyone is doing.

NVC: Fans and industry connected with your album Strictly Roots, so much so that you won the 2015 Grammy for Best Reggae Recording! Here we are in 2017 going into 2018 with another Grammy nomination for Best Reggae Album. Is history going to repeat itself?! MM:

(Laughs). We may be artists but we are definitely not genies. We cannot predict the future. What I can tell you is that the Recording Academy prides itself on trying to take the best quality of music in each respective genre and us being Morgan Heritage, we’ve always prided ourselves on making music apart from the rest. With idols such as Steel Pulse, Third World, Luciano, and people that we looked up to growing up, people like Fattis Burrell were doing quality music which is all we wanted to do. When we started producing our own music we found that the great ones before us set the example and we contin ued in those footsteps. If history repeats itself it’s because of that quality that we chose to follow, and we would be grateful!

NVC: Tell us about Avrakedabra beginning with the meaning of the title! MM:

Avrakebabra, the 11th studio album from Morgan Heritage is a magical body of work created across 4 continents. We were on tour behind the success of the Grammy winning Strictly Roots album and it’s a word we discovered in our studies. The album felt like the title. The way the album came together … ev erything we said became a reality. All praise due to the Most High. The word ‘avrakedabra’ means I

con’d...

become what I speak. We lived that from the creation of the album to the marketing and the touring. This year our world tour was more international than with Strictly Roots. We started in Aruba, then we went to Uganda for the first time, St. Maarten, Europe, then we came back to the US in July.

NVC:

Some of the highlights for us include “We Are,” “Ready For Love” and “Reggae Night.” We Are is special because musically, Reggae and Dancehall are united so the riddim is symbolic as well as the lyrics. “Ready For Love” is powerful because you awaken the consciousness of listeners in terms of the title of the song, and Reggae Night pays tribute to a Reggae King, Jimmy Cliff. How do you as a group decide on which songs are going to be included on an album?

MM:

All praise is due to the most high! It’s a blessing! If I were to sit here and tell you that we do this inten tionally, we’d be lying. That’s the reason why the album is called Avrakedabra … because it’s magical. The music speaks to us when Peetah, Gramps and I sit down and write a song. The music dictates the mood and the lyrical content. We are at a point where we’ve had a lot of spiritually driven lyrics and we’ve built a foundation of fans whom we call ‘Loyal Royals.’

Now, as they grow and we grow, we find ourselves getting into different places … the universal message speaks to a wider audience versus our foundation in each community who made Morgan Heritage who we are. When you look at what’s going on in the world, our music is life music. We pay attention to what’s going on in the world, so that’s why it seems like we make music before people know that’s what they want to hear. Ready for Love is a perfect example.

We’re in a sex driven society, and not enough people are talking about love. What happened to the love? Where’s the foreplay? You know?! It’s been a long time since Morgan Heritage did a slow jam on an album, and Peetah was adamant that we do that. We got into a heated discussion about this very topic. Big up Seani B (from BBC 1Xtra) and Don Chandler on the production.

NVC: Did you find that ‘Mark’ in Jamaica is the same as ‘Mark’ in Dubai is the same as ‘Mary’ in Australia is the same as ‘Mary’ in Canada? Because you travel, you can see all of us, but we can’t see each other so music is really the connecting force between mankind? MM:

Yes that’s exactly it! The lyrical content for us, which moves depending on what we see in the world and at the end of the day, nowhere is better than nowhere! The same problem in New York, is in Toronto, is in Dubai, it’s in Miami, London; everywhere. For us, that gives us the ability to be able to relate to people no matter where they’re from. We have one common thing: we are human beings. The one thing that brings us together is love. If we can just focus on that, we can end poverty, we can end war, we can end a lot of the problems that the world is facing … that powerful four letter word.

NVC: The song “Harder Than You Know” is very telling. Most people don’t know about the hardships people in the industry face … and sometimes alone. Why reveal this side of the business to fans?

L3 Magazine | December, 2017 ft. Morgan Heritage - Pg. 65

MM:

You know the old saying ‘every man’s burden is the heaviest?’ When you’re going through the struggles in life, you have to know that even the millionaire has struggles. They might be different to the average mans struggles, but to him, it’s still a struggle, it feels like the world is coming down and no one can relate. So when people get like that, they need assistance … they need a friend to talk to. We provide music to listen to; we understand and we feel their pain. They must know and believe that everything is going to be ok.

NVC: When it comes to live shows, Morgan Heritage is the only group that I’ve seen perform who places empha sis on raising the audience vibration before the show starts. Has this always been a tradition, and have you heard fans say ‘that show changed my life?’ MM:

We hear that every time we go on stage! For us as a family, we always make the audience a part of what’s happening on stage. That is the family vibe. We have to bring the people into us: into our tour bus, into us as siblings growing up, when we get into arguments – everything! On top of that, touring takes a lot out of you as an artist. Some people get dehydrated, fatigued, the list goes on. It takes a lot out of you to give your all. That’s 100% on stage every night.

As a family, we lean on each other. If Peetah is feeling a way, Gramps or Mojo might sing more of a lead so that the burden is not so heavy and vice versa. Where the audience comes in, is we need their energy, and the only way to get it is to bring them into the show, make them a part of the show, bring them on stage with us! We can never afford to have the fans feel cheated. Without them, we are nothing.

NVC: Being true Reggae Ambassadors, you are taking the genre to places it hasn’t been before … A tree lighting ceremony on Wall Street?! That’s a major cultural embrace initiated by …?! MM: (Laughs!) Yes man we turned it into an Irie Christmas as Jacob Miller would say! It was historical for the genre of Reggae, for the Culture, brand Jamaica, and for us as a family! Our Dad was present so that was really great! I’ve personally never been to Wall Street even though I was born and raised in New York. Being in the building and ring the bell, it was surreal. Trillions of dollars go through that place – it was amazing! NVC: Bedford-Stuy to Wall Street?! Hello?! MM:

That sounds like a headline! It’s real. Music has opened doors for us, taken us to places, put us at the tables with Presidents and Prime Ministers of this world … it’s incredible. We didn’t have that in America. We’ve been signed to a major label, but haven’t had a mainstream hit record on the radio. We haven’t done a late night TV show, we’ve never done Good Morning America, but, step outside of America and that’s our stomping ground! Being able to hit Wall Street was humbling and grateful!

We’re still young, but we’ve been doing this for 25 years. I’m in my 30’s, but being relevant, and record ing with the young ones like Kabaka Pyramid, Dre Island and others and having them bring us to their audience is humbling! The president of the stock exchange enjoyed our performance and came to us personally and said ‘listen, I gotta have you guys back next year!’ We are really humbled!

Lisa Hyper

Hype with Substance! By: NATASHA VON CASTLE | Editor-In-Chief

LH

I want you to like Lisa Hyper as much as I do. I want you to like Lisa Hyper so much, that you cheer her on and watch her as she ascends to the levels her talents take her. To be honest, when the opportunity came up to interview Lisa, I was a little apprehensive. I wasn’t sure of how it would be (not that I’m sure with any interview), but did have a false idea that she would be chewing bubble gum, tossing her hair, and asking me if we’re done yet. I couldn’t have been more wrong! Ladies … Lisa gives you key life advice which centers on the title of her EP. It’s critical that you listen / read and absorb what she says! Lisa is hype, and she has substance … a winning formula for the landscape we’re in today! NVC: For those of us who don’t know you, tell us in your own words who Lisa Hyper is? LH:

Lisa Hyper is an entertainer that is full of substance . I am very jovial, emotional, energetic, spiritual and loving. I’m loyal and just love to entertain!

NVC: One of the things producers say they like about you is your work ethic … no matter what you are going to get the job done. Are you applying that work ethic as much to your career / image as much as your music? LH:

I was molded and groomed by Vybz Kartel and being around him from a tender age, I always watched how he worked, how fast he worked, and got the job done no matter that or who was around him. I always had a fascination about him and how he performed so well all the time. That’s the work ethic he had, and that’s what I took on too. In my case, I also work well under pressure and I enjoy working under pressure. (She laughs). It’s weird and crazy but that’s how I am.

NVC: One of the things we like about you is you can flow to anything. Dancehall, Reggae, Throwback, Hip Hop, even R&B. Is your versatility because of the music or because of the lyrics?! LH:

When I was coming up, I made it a point to not limit myself, and not limit music on a whole. As I said before when you asked ‘who is Lisa Hyper,’ I told you I’m a person of substance. That means a lot to me … that is lacking in some areas of Dancehall right now, so it’s important to me. Personally I do all kinds of music – it widens your vocabulary and your knowledge. So that’s where the versatility comes from and the reason why I am that way.

NVC: You have a unique lyrical flow. At times it’s rough and aggressive, and at other times it’s smooth like silk! Are you keeping your fans on their toes ie expect the unexpected?! LH:

What I sing and what I DJ has to make sense. It has to make you ‘stick a pin’ and ask yourself … wait … ‘that’s what she just said?!’ I’m a female with a male musical personality. It gives me a drive to go as hard as the males or even harder because people are not expecting a female to have those lyrics. I take time when I’m writing and even if the riddim make the words come quick, I still pick and choose the words that I use.

L3 Magazine | December, 2017 ft. Morgan Heritage - Pg. 75

con’d...

When I attended school I loved writing poems and composition … I was very good with English language which helped my writing skills as well. I think those are some of the reasons why my lyrics keep fans on their toes.

NVC: Your new project called BOSS Up … tell us about it, and in particular, why that title for the project?! LH:

Well BOSS Up is something that is really happening right now in my career. It’s not just a title. When I was introduced to the world under the regime of Vybz Kartel, I was not in charge of my career, branding and all of that – it was him doing it. Now that I’m on my own, I have to go into that BOSS UP position so I can get the job done on my own. Now I’m branding myself, I’m in control of my career.

Naturally, every female wants to be a Boss; as long as you have ambition, drive and you know your pur pose (this is not going to work if you don’t know your purpose to fulfill your dreams and accomplish your goals), you are a Boss. You’re a Boss in your career, in your relationship, your bedroom, you’re Bossing up on a while. Some of us, when we’re in an unhealthy relationship, it’s hard for us to Boss up because your mind is not contented – you’re in an unhealthy relationship and you’re easily distracted. For some of us to be on a path, to accomplish our dreams and our goals, we have to show a man tough love. If you don’t, they will take advantage of you and derail you from what you’re trying to get done; so one of the songs on the EP is called “Tough Love.”

It’s a new era now. You hardly find girls crying over a man. You hardly find females not bouncing back after heartbreak. There’s another song called “Lose to Win” and basically, that tells you that sometimes we have to literally lose to win. It’s easier for a woman to bounce back than a male, so no matter what you go through, you can bounce back … you just have to fill your mind with positivity.

NVC: You said something key earlier that I want to touch on again … We as Women can be a Boss in the board room and in the bedroom … there is no limit. LH:

Yes exactly. That is what the EP is about. I’m giving females encouragement to Boss up in every way.

NVC: I read recently that you want to talk to younger fans / high school fans so they don’t allow people to bully them or lead them down the wrong path. Why is that so important to you? LH:

When I was younger, I never liked bullies. I didn’t like it when people bullied others, or bullied me. I always was fighting because I wasn’t going to stand for that. I was always a defender and never a trouble maker; it might seem as if I’m the trouble maker because of how I defend myself. Now that I’m older, I don’t entertain certain energy. Once I come around you and feel certain energy, I’m going to leave. I won’t put myself in a position to be disrespected or get my feelings hurt. I’m not thin skinned but you know that words can really hurt sometimes.

To young people, they have to be reassured that not everyone deserves their energy, and they should not be disrespected or bullied at any time. They shouldn’t receive that, and they shouldn’t give that.

L3 Magazine | December, 2017 ft. Morgan Heritage - Pg. 77

NVC: Who are some of the people you surround yourself with who are positive? LH:

I live in a valley so I’m surrounded by nature. I’ve surrounded myself with real ones who I know their love is genuine. Even if we run a hot joke, we know that it’s love. At times I’m surrounded by family, at times my adviser, and at times by myself which is important too.

Everybody knows that I’ve been through a lot, and I made it look easy, even though it was not easy. It took a lot to get to where I am now, and I’m sharing a part of that (the getting through part) with fans through music. I’m just so happy to be here, and be an inspiration to a lot of young people, especially girls.

What I’m showing them, and other entertainers is that you don’t have to sell sex to be a star. I’m not selling sex, I’m selling music and that’s what makes me different.

NVC: The name of our magazine is L3 and each L has a meaning. The first L is for Life, the second L is for Love and the third L is for Lyrics. What general advice can you give our readers on Life, Love and Lyrics?! LH:

On Life I would say never give up. Adhere to your plans to fulfill your dreams. You have to know your purpose if you want to succeed or achieve. Obstacles might come along the way, so I advise you say a prayer and read Psalms 23 ... He will answer.

On Love, love yourself first before you can love anyone else. As basic as that sounds, it’s true.

Elle Tremma aka SPLADAPS! By: JENNIFER MENSTER | Music Editor

ET

More eyes are focusing on Canada’s pool of Reggae and Dancehall talent, and one artist who continues to rise to the top is Elle Tremma! This incredible songstress has released singles that have gotten the attention of the Sound fraternity which made it necessary for us to do a December, 2017 feature on her! JM:

You have a lot of people talking about you and your style when it comes to music. When did you know that you were made for the stage and wanted to be a singer?

ET:

I found myself singing at a very tender age to songs playing on the radio and on TV, and at age eleven, I was so in tuned to music that every time I sang I felt pure joy. Singing is its own reward, making music with my voice is a gift from the Almighty Most High that can’t be compared with anything else, and with that gift, I know I was made for the stage.

JM: Your energy while performing is electric! Does it come from your joy of performing, from the audience ... where? ET: My energy comes from a combination of singing on melodic rhythms and performing on stage in front of a big audience. I make sure that my energy is not conveyed in just my songs, but also in my performances. JM:

Your music is uplifting. Lyrically you sing about topics every person (no matter where they live) can identify with. What inspires your music / lyrics? Is it the riddim or do lyrics come to you?

ET: My feelings, emotions and listening to rhythms is what inspires me to write. I have to feel the rhythm first and then write about what I feel. I found myself to be inspired by just anything that relates to my mood. JM:

Your song “Breath of Life” is so refreshing! It is Reggae and its Gospel and it’s feel good music! How did that song come about?!

ET:

The song “Breath Of Life” is about the many struggles I’ve faced upon life’s journey. It serves as a remind er to us all that regardless of how insurmountable the obstacles facing us in life may sometimes appear that we have all been blessed with everything required to survive, overcome and prosper.

“Breath Of Life” touches on issues such as violence, social destruction, deception, hopelessness and depression in a way that can only be described as beautiful with an underlying message of resilience and faith. Like I said, my journey has been full of challenges, but my faith has never wavered, I keep going and I keep believing, that’s what I do, and that’s why I’m still here to make the music I love. The Almighty Most High is my breath of life.

L3 Magazine | December, 2017 ft. Morgan Heritage - Pg. 85

JM:

Your catch-phrase ‘Spladaps!’ I’ve been hearing people say it for the past year and now understand it comes from you! What is that phrase all about?!

ET:

(Laughs!). The phrase “SPLADAPS” is a slogan I came up with, it derives from a splash sound that is made when a large piece of object impacts the surface of a body of water, which then converts into vapours like ocean spray, leaving you with a “Fresh and Clean” feeling. I used “SPLADAPS” in a way of saying wow, someone or something looks good, hot, tun up, blazing, smoking, on fire etc. “SPLADAPS” is basically anything that sounds or look good fully up to the top!

JM:

The name of our magazine is L3 and each L has a meaning. The first L is for Life, the second L is for Love and the third L is for Lyrics. What general advice can you give our readers on Life, Love and Lyrics?!

ET:

The general advice I can give to readers of L3 magazines about “Life, Love and Lyrics” are, Life, be coura geous to live a true life to yourself rather than living the life others expect of you; you’ll always regret what you do rather than what you did and if you choose to blame it on someone else, then don’t expect that things will get better.

For Love, whether you’re with someone for a long or short time, don’t settle with them if they have zero regard for your feelings, not because you love each other means that you’re good together long-term. No relationship is perfect, there will always be conflict, what should matter is the desire to fix the problem. Fight the problem and not the person.

And for Lyrics; a lyric can be a poem or a rap, but by adding a melody to it will enhance it and make it into a song. In order to write good music you need to understand music, rhythm and melody. If you start to write a lyric that you think sounds good and worth taking on to the next level, then put some more work into it, rework and rewrite it until it’s as good as It can be. There’s always room for improvement!
