Editors Heart... … and then Wonder Woman showed up and the earth shook – hard! If I had the opportunity to write for The Washington Post, or the LA Times, I would begin my article with the above sentence because, when Dr. Blasey Ford testified in front of Congress, she became Wonder Woman! I get it and I understand that Wonder Woman is supposed to be a fictitious character from DC Comics who has the perfect hair, face and body; slim and wearing a corset type bodice with a cape and flying around in an invisible jet, but most men missed the memo about who Wonder Woman really is. Wonder Woman is the woman you know who day in and day out works while balancing the needs of her family, adjusts to the challenges in life, and finds a way to make everything work. When she is weary, and running low on her energy points, she seeks the help she needs, gives herself a boost and is off again. And wait! When Wonder Woman recalls the frightening encounter she had with a man, who, but for the fact she was wearing a full piece swimsuit would have raped her, steps forward to tell her story – amid death threats – yes, that is the REAL Wonder Woman. The woman who made a conscious decision that her story was going to be told, albeit under circumstances she did not prefer, but her story will be told all the same – that is the woman who showed up, and she is a super hero. When you take the time to listen to some of the experiences women worldwide have had, and yet still find a way to push forward, overcoming fears, and praying for their moment(s) of justice, you will recognize that every woman is Wonder Woman. She is real, and she walks the earth. She will no longer be silenced, and her tales of abuse will no longer be swept under the rug. Agree or disagree via Twitter @NatashaVonC

Ola October! We’re so glad your here! As the temperature cools down, the music in our head-sets and speakers heat up, especially when we hear the vibrant sounds from Amara La Negra! She is this months L3 Magazine Calendar Girl and we love her! #Amara #CalendarGirl #Singer #Inspiration! Our introduction to Amara came in January as we watched her light up the screen on Love & Hip Hop Miami. Her class, style and grace made us dig a little deeper, and are so proud to say she comes from the Dominican Republic. Growing up in Miami with her Mother, she knew music and entertainment were her destiny. Perfecting her crafts, she released the hit record “Ayy” which achieved huge success in the Latin market. With her success came adversity with her skin. Unfortunately, there are some who don’t appreciate her dark skin. To us, Amara is a Queen! Check out some of her music on YouTube including “Insecure!”

Colin Kaepernick and Nike Just Do It By: Clark Mindock for The Independent

Colin Kaepernick, the American football star who started the “take a knee” national anthem protest against police brutality has been named as the new face of Nike’s “Just Do It” campaign for its 30th anniversary. Kaepernick remains a free agent without a team at present, however, as the NFL appears reluctant to endorse his controversial gesture, Nike’s move has already sparked a protest from angry consumers who consider the quarterback’s stance “unpatriotic”, destroying the brand’s products and venting their displeasure on social media. A wave of players followed Kaepernick’s example last year, causing the protest to be morph into an act of direct resistance against Donald Trump after the president weighed in on the issue. The NFL responded by announcing that teams would be fined if their men continued to do so. But the move to take a knee during the national anthem before kick-off - or stand with arms locked in silent protest - follows in a long tradition of sports stars standing up for what they believe to be right, despite many believing that doing so is unpatriotic and that politics should be kept out of sports. “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of colour,” Kaepernick said in a press conference after first sitting out during the anthem. “To me, this is bigger than football, and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.” Police brutality has become an incredibly polarising and contentious issue in American life. This comes as a result of repeated videos showing police shooting and killing unarmed black men, which have been posted online and gone viral — illustrating the brutality that black people in America must contend with when dealing with some police officers, who often do not serve any prison time for pulling the trigger. After Kaepernick first started the protest, he was criticised for introducing politics into sports. Many said that football was somehow sacrosanct, and that it should be a place where people can rise above politics. But, while Kaepernick is out of an NFL job, he has remained busy with charity work. That includes a $1m pledge he made to charitable organisations, which has included support for a variety of groups. Read the original and full article here

16 Million Reggae Streams and Royalties Paid By: Zakada Milton

The Reggae and Dancehall industry is slowly waking to the benefits of the very real numbers of 16 million streams and royalties paid (on streams) thanks to the streaming service audiomack. Though the 16 million (Reggae) figure pales in comparison to the 130 million streams for Hip Hop / Rap / Trap for the month of August alone, the number of listeners on the AM website represents a potentially ‘healthy’ paycheck for artists and managers who choose to stay ahead of the curve by tapping into the sites built in demographic. An artist who decides to upload music through the Audiomack.com website, can expect during the monetization process, to have their music made available worldwide on sale sites iTunes, and Rhapsody, as well as streaming sites such as Spotify. In total, his music is available on 60 sites worldwide, and in territories such as Asia, South America and Africa. As an independent, his music earns him money every time it is streamed on audiomack and all the other sites. 100% of the revenue goes to him. “When I uploaded my music to audiomack, I did it to access the Hip Hop market hoping to get a few sales from those fans. The number of artists and managers signing their music to audiomack is growing. Looking at the website (audiomack.com), fans see popular producer DJ Frass, Dancehall star Kranium and rising stars Rygin King and Govanna have titles accessible to millions of fans who are considered ‘crossovers.’ “What sets us apart” says Tanya Lawson, audiomack’s World Music Manager, “is that Links spread quickly with our demographic.” Notable Dancehall stars with playlists on the site include Kranium, Aidonia and Masicka. Tastemakers for audiomack also play a role in the promotion of World music, namely Reggae, Dancehall, Soca and Afrobeats. DJ Young Chow and Natasha Von Castle are just two people representing the genres, and between them average thousands of streams on their combined playlists. “We help artists make money from sales and from streams which is a great thing.” audiomack subscribers are labeled Generation Z (12 to 24) and spend 84% of their day streaming music. They make up 80% of the streaming market as documented by Statistica. “Once you get those kids tuned in and turned on to your music, you can expect consistent checks from this one source, much less the other sources too. It’s definitely a good thing” say several artists. Visit audiomack.com or contact Tanya with inquiries at tanya@audiomack.com

King Addies

35th Anniversary

King Addies 35th Anniversary By: Chris Coley

Internationally acclaimed reggae dancehall music influencer, King Addies, is rolling out the big guns with the exclusive release of “King Addies: 35 Gun Salute” (#35GunSalute) on Billboard.com—the second musical release of their official yearlong 35thAnniversary celebration. An extraordinary follow up to their May 2018 release of “The Killa Collection” (over 100 sound clash tapes totaling 240+ hours of epic golden-era audio), #35GunSalute is a special compilation mix of thirty-five iconic King Addies dubplate (custom recordings) anthems, for the listening experience of their thriving global fan base. As far as dubplate recordings go, King Addies’ musical library is respected tremendously by their peers and revered among their cult-like following of music enthusiasts across the world. Most DJs gain followers for how they curate standard tracks that any DJ can play. King Addies has distinguished themselves in how they consistently pump out the newest music, and also the fact that 95% of the music they spin are exclusive, one of a kind, dubplates. What makes these recordings so unique is the words are re-written, and/or the original artist skillfully weaves the King Addies name, and specific member names into the song. Scores of fans experiencing popular artist’s making sizzling hot references to their favorite sound system DJ/Selector(s), and the memorization of said special lyrics, is how a song becomes a sound system’s anthem. As the dubplate lyrics are engraved into the hearts of fans, it simultaneously becomes a part of King Addies’ unique identity, and people often even forget the original lyrics. Representing Brooklyn on the international stage since 1983 and having rightfully earned the moniker “Billboard Sound” for producing dubplates anthems with several major charting artists of the 90s and early 2000s, King Addies is one of a very elite fraternity of Jamaican sound system Selector/DJs who have a direct hand in a cultural revolution. With an extremely vast and genre-diverse catalog of said tracks dating back to the early 80s, they are credited with popularizing the mash-up of reggae, dancehall, hip-hop, rap and R&B in North America. Fearlessly creative, they took calculated risks with music and cemented their name in history in the process. The process of selecting the anthems for the compilation mix, both old and new, has been a collaborative effort among the 10-member squad of music aficionados. However, with over 3 decades in the business, and an ultra rich chunk of musical history as their ever-potent legacy, thirty-five tracks is merely a drop in the bucket of songs that grew to become fan anthems over the years. Totally impossible to include all of their popular anthems on the project, #35GunSalute is a fiery 65-minute musical journey down memory lane, and to the present. #35GunSalute features dubplates by: Lauryn Hill/The Fugees, Anita Baker, Nas, Snoop Dog, Black Rob, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, McFadden & Whitehead, Dennis Brown, Buju Banton, Supa Cat, Stephen Marley, Beenie Man, Sean L3 Magazine | October, 2018 ft. Paul, Vybz Kartel, Bounty Killer, Chronixx, Mavado, Popcaan and many more music luminaries. Official release date October 12th, at 12noon EST, on Billboard.com. King Addies International Recently wrapping up their second successful European Tour within 18 months (August), King Addies aggressively ripped stages in the UK, Belgium, Germany, Italy and Spain on their 35h Anniversary Legacy Tour. Delivering high-energy 3+ hour sets on major stages like Reggae Geel’s 40th Anniversary festival in Belgium (Bounce stage; approximately 13,500 people), and Rototom Sunsplash’s 25th Anniversary festival in Spain (Dancehall stage; guestimate 6K people), one of their most agile Selector/DJs—King Pin— brought insanely epic Brooklyn vibes to old and surely new European fans. With other shows garnering packed club and beachfront venues like YAAM in Berlin, Pata Pata Sampieri in Sicily and Mamanera Beach in Salento Italy, the tour was a massive win towards the brand’s current objective to garner a broader fan base, and step further into mainstream entertainment. Additionally, the music tastemakers remain on the vanguard of the wildly competitive international sound clash industry, since their inception. Currently embracing a new moniker given to them by fans, “North America’s #1 Defender” is now enjoying a recent 5-0 winning streak (within a year) over several prominent sound systems from Japan, Italy, Canada and the USA. With 35 years of killing top sounds under their belt, today King Addies is the most dominant and relevant ambassador of Jamaican sound system culture. Matterhorn’s Homecoming Widely unknown to fans of Tony Matterhorn (the dancehall artist who brought the crossover hit single “Dutty Wine” along with its controversial dance craze to mainstream music in 2006), he experienced his first taste of international stardom and touring as a selector and MC of King Addies. Slaying international stages as both a solo artist and Selector/DJ for the last 7 years, on Saturday, October 13th Matterhorn will return to Brooklyn to headline King Addies’ sizzling hot party series, “Welcome to Newlots”. Somewhat of a prodigal son returning home scenario, the cake icing is Power 105.1’s DJ Norie (additionally of Brooklyn’s legendary Afrique Soundstation) will also be featured alongside the King sound. A line up set to the backdrop of the United States’ finest era of dancehall nostalgia, these international reggae dancehall All-Stars have an unforgettable history of creating the most epic NYC dancehall vibes in venue’s like Biltmore Ballroom, Albany Manor, Cpac and Amazura dating back to the 90s. Every two years, King Addies produces a major dancehall reggae event to commemorate their anniversary. Notoriously garnering roadblock status, in prior years these events have featured original artist member Supa Cat, as well as other dancehall icons such as: Bounty Killer, Sean Paul, Wayne Marshall, Stonelove, Bass Odyssey, Ruff Pack, Mighty Crown, and more. The 35th Anniversary event will take place on December 15, 2018, at the 3000+ capacity venue, Club Amazura NYC. First names for release are The Breakfast Club/Power 105’s DJ Envy, Hot 97’s Massive B, Tony Matterhorn, Bronx NY’s Platinum Kids, Germany’s Sentinel Sound, DJ Stakz the Haitian King, Japan’s DJ Burndown, Brooklyn’s Unruly Stumpy and Washington DC’s Revolution Sound. More special guests artists to follow. L3 Magazine | October, 2018 ft. Kabaka Pyramid Pg. 29

This track is lustful and groovy and exactly what we would expect from the seasoned singer. Though we’ve mentioned two songs, it should be noted that each track stands out especially when we look at the great song writing ability of George Nooks, who wrote 10 heart felt tracks. Gia Yee - Reggae Perspective Reggae music artiste Gia Yee is on a mission to promote her new love, which is her brand of soulful reggae music. The female singer-songwriter, whose father hails from Jamaica, ultimately found her voice through writing and singing her own songs. “I love the whole reggae vibe – everything about it – it’s so spiritual”, explains Gia Yee, “Writing music is my therapy, and reggae music is my refuge.” The 2017 release of her self-titled EP- GIA YEE established her career as a solo artiste and by the start of 2018, Gia was back in the studios of Jamaica, recording and producing her first full-length album. “It was a huge milestone for me” Gia admits, “as I had so much that I wanted to say.” Scheduled as a 2018 end-of-summer release, Gia chose the title REGGAE PRESCRIPTION for her new LP, as she felt the title was representative of her transformational experience. Staying true to reggae and within her smooth signature reggae fusion artist style, the new album tracks incorporate Gia’s soul-filled messages of hope, awareness, familial and societal issues and dynamics, universal and personal truths, growth, and love. Reflective of her journey, Gia describes her album REGGAE PRESCRIPTION as a cultural roots reggae fusion mix - with some ska beats and dancehall drum lines, and hints of classic funk and vinyl, R&B and electronic dance music. The LP song list includes consciousness-raising tracks “GASLIT”, “ERASED”, “BOTH FEET”, and “ANYTHING”; an upbeat funk infused cultural blending love song called “YO RASTA”, featuring the hidden DJ chanting talents of her producer Mr. Kirk Gayle (aka Neil Keys); two renditions of her self-reflective song “NOTE TO SELF”, presented with horns and a European ska flare; a dancehall and EDM influenced dance tune entitled “MY AVATAR”, whose lyrics cleverly takes its listeners on a ‘dance in the moonlight’; “ISLAND NIGHTS” which embodies the island sounds to the fullest; and the beautiful ballad of “RASTA JACK”, which takes one on a timeless trip connecting past and present - through a song that Gia explains is her personal interpretation of what true love looks like in its most simplistic form. Excited about her music, her first full-length album, and career as a new female reggae artist, Gia Yee expresses her heartfelt gratitude to the many renowned Jamaican musicians and vocalists/harmonists, who provided their talents for her production, giving a special thanks and mention to her co producers Mr. Kirk Gayle, Mr. Wayne Holness, and Mr. Barry O’Hare, whose efforts and expertise helped to facilitate the LP production and bring her latest music project to life. Gia’s music is available on all platforms. L3 Magazine | October, 2018 ft. Kabaka Pyramid Pg. 43

Saboo “True Love” Some would say that French, as in the language, is one of the most romantic to be spoken. Some also say that Lover’s Rock is the most romantic form of Reggae on the planet, so, when you combine the romantic language with the romantic genre, you have one performing artist who really stands out – Sebastien Lebeau! Sebastien Lebeau is from Montreal, Canada and a well recognized performing artist. In his hometown and across the Province of Quebec, Saboo (Sebastien’s stage name) has performed at most major festivals, concerts and community events. Events such as the Montreal International Reggae Festival, Jerk Fest, Jamaica Day and Soul City Festival (Ottawa) are just some of the fans to hear Saboo. Not keeping his talent to Canada, Saboo recorded and performed his song “BoomGaia” at Tuff Gong Studio’s in Kingston. Drawing inspiration from several sources around him, the performing artistes new single entitled “True Love” is one of the lead singles from his album that will be released later this year. In the song, the artist expresses his heart, and despite some not understanding French, listeners understand the sentiments expressed! We were privy to a few of the artists studio sessions in his hometown of Montreal, QC, and the sessions were fire! They were so hot, portions of the sessions were shared on the artists Instagram and Facebook pages which immediately received positive feedback. Saboo’s roots are stemmed with influences of Bob Marley who was about Love as much as he was about consciousness. Saboo was also influenced by Sound System and Sound culture. Admiring how artists showcased their talents in front of a live audience, Saboo duplicated that with a hand selected 4 member band (bass, guitar, drums and vocals) who have successfully performed in Canada including several festivals. On an international scale, Saboo recorded “Jamaica Vibes” at the legendary Tuff Gong Studio, as well as filmed two music video’s in Negril, Westmoreland. With his contagious energy spilling over to every audience he meets, Saboo’s rhythmic and poetic tonalities as well as conscious words make him the ideal performer on stage. With the added touch of loving words combined with his gentle compositions, he will appeal to every person wanting to hear songs of love in English and French as we head into the Winter season! Tony Anthony “Why I Love You” There is a science to music that determines whether a song will be a hit in its respective genre. Some of the factors are the key the song is performed in, the arrangement (where do the vocals come in, the guitar, the bass, drums etc.) and the overall energy of the song. Veteran musician Tony Anthony scores in all categories with his cover of Major’s song “This is Why I Love You” which is destined to become a #1 hit record worldwide! Currently in Canada (which is where Tony is based), “This is Why I Love You” is number 6 on the Canadian Reggae Chart on Vibe 105.5 FM and it is climbing. It is also one of the most requested songs on Reggae radio in the country and will soon be in high demand worldwide! What is striking about Tony’s version of this song is the way in which he made it his own, meaning if a person had never heard the original, they would think Tony is the originator … but cover songs is only a part of Tony’s beat! If you’ve been listening to music for a while (which we’re sure you have been), you know a good chune when you hear it, and Tony’s original song “Today I’m Gonna Try And Change the World” is another one of his hit records. As if sharing a Psalms, Tony sings “Today I’m gonna try and change the world / gonna take it one day at a time / I’ve made my resolution / opened up my eyes / today I’m gonna try and change the world / I’m going to say hello to my neighbours / gonna greet them with a smile / shake the hand of a stranger / sit and talk to him for a while ….” Getting his musical start at age 14 in high school by way of meeting Glen Washington, Tony pursued music passionately. He worked alongside icons Jackie Mittoo, Freddie McGregor, Cocoa Tea, Jack Ruby and many others, and each experience added a layer to Tony’s polished performances. On the awards circuit, Tony has earned several including a JUNO Award nomination for his single “Million Chance,” and wins in the categories of Best Male Vocalist, Best Songwriter, Best Single and Best Album at the Canadian Reggae Achievement Awards. Estelle’s Own Lovers Rock

Estelle’s Own Lovers Rock Contributed

The most enduring love stories often repeat themselves during different times, at different places, and in different people. As Estelle built the framework for her fifth full-length and first album for the newly minted partnership between her own Established 1980 label and VP Records, Lover’s Rock, the multiplatinum GRAMMY® Award-winning UK singer, songwriter, actress, and humanitarian realized a pattern. Her own relationship experiences bore a subtle resemblance to those of her Senegalese mother and Grenadian father who “got together, had children, broke up, found each other again twenty years later, and happily married a decade after.” Sharing her personal life without a filter, the process continued a long tradition of sharp straight talk. “As I started writing, I kept talking about how mind-blowing my parents’ story was to me,” she recalls. “I thought about what it meant, what it looks like, and how it relates to me. I’ve always been one-hundred percent real, so I wrote about why I personally couldn’t get the love I wanted. As my mom heard the music, she was like, ‘That’s what me and your dad went through too!’ While I chronicled my life in the lyrics, I subconsciously based it on their lives. My records are my truth and where I’m at any given time. It was one-hundred percent natural.” Lover’s Rock wouldn’t just be a reprise of this love story though. By the same token, the music from her formative years reappeared in the album’s DNA as she rooted the record in the Reggae and Afrobeat sounds of her childhood. She can vividly recall classics from Dennis Brown, Freddie McGregor, Pépé Kallé, Bob Marley, Fela Kuti, and more resounding in the house. As the vision for the music took shape, she tapped the talents of producers such as “Come Over” collaborator Supa Dups—who contributed four songs—Dre Harris, Reefa, and more to bring a cohesive vision to life. “This is the first time I’ve done a whole body of work exactly like one genre or part of the world,” she goes on. “It had to be cohesive, because it is so personal. Normally, I go into different chambers and do various genres. However, it felt right to follow one vibe. This is what I grew up on. It’s what I thought of as real music for as long as I can remember. To me, it’s second nature.” Stream Estelle’s album from her Spotify playlist, or add it to your collection on Apple iTunes using this link: https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/lovers-rock/1425955454

Kabaka Pyramid ‘Kontraband’

By: Natasha Von Castle | Photography: Ricardo Stephens (Radiant Sun)

The things we do as children, especially the things we naturally love to do, often plays a role in the career path we choose as adults. Researchers have suggested that if children are nurtured and groomed in their natural talents, they will become leaders in their respective fields, and will live a happy well-adjusted life. Kabaka Pyramid is that person! Any performing artist, regardless of genre, will tell you that Kabaka is one of their favorites to listen to. He has a very smooth way of telling a story; using words from the English dictionary that you and I use – but use them as a double meaning. He is a lyrics deity, and he’s been doing this since his teens. There isn’t another artist you will entrust your ear, your aura, your spirit or your heart to, the way you can trust Kabaka Pyramid….

L3 Magazine | October, 2018 ft. Kabaka Pyramid Pg. 63

NVC: When it comes to your career, there isn’t another place to begin than with your lyrics! You unbe lievably move people with your verbal and musical sequence. Tell us your earliest memory with word, and your decision to re-arrange the ‘normal’ sequence to tell the right story? KP:

Well, being a lyricist started at the age of 14 and 15 where I would hear a popular song and change up the lyrics to that song. Then I started writing verses with one of my friends at school. The real purpose and mission oriented musical approach started when I heard Sizzla Kalonji.

Sizzla’s music was at the root of my transformation personally, musically and spiritually I can say. I’ve always said that I want my music to be that inspiration for someone else and to help people stay on the right path. They must know their roots and heritage, so they have a blueprint going forward. NVC: Looking at your album Kontraband, there are several songs that stand out musically and lyrically. Songs that stand out are “Natural Woman,” “Well Done” and of course “Kontraband.” Can you walk us through the album’s construction – collaborations, riddim choices, song titles etc.! KP:

Well the whole album process started with a conversation with Damian. My two managers who are also my closest friends, always had it in mind to do an album and we knew that we had to do it when the time was right, and we had the resources. There had to be a certain level of quality.

When Damian sent me the riddim for “Well Done,” the process of going to Miami and working in the studio, helped nurture a musical chemistry and a working relationship which led to us working on more productions. He explained that he was working with other artists and wanted to be involved with more projects, so he reached out and said, ‘why don’t we work on an album.’

I was already working on music, for example, “Natural Woman” was on a riddim for a producer from Trench Town who wasn’t doing anything with the song. I took the lyrics and put it to the beat Damian sent. We built the riddim from scratch. The demo vocals you hear was done at 4 and 5am in the morning – that was the same vocal that ended up on the album!

We took an organic approach – there are a few songs in which I started out by playing two chords on the guitar and Damian put together some drums, then his keyboard player, Pow, who is on a lot of the production on the album would contribute, and I would start singing, and the lyrics just came. Also, I had a lot of material that I had already written, and that was included on the album as well.

There came a point where I just began singing songs I had written, and Damian would note the ones he liked, and that became the pool we would choose from for songs for the album. We worked out the vibe that was missing from certain tracks, and what contribution was needed from other producers. He was very open to the process and liked my creativity. That’s how songs like “Meaning of Life,” “Can’t Breathe,” “Kaught Up” and others came about. Every song has a story!

L3 Magazine | October, 2018 ft. Kabaka Pyramid Pg. 65

NVC: Today’s generation of music listeners are paying careful attention to a song’s lyrics. Some of their thinking is ‘for me to sing this song or have it on my playlist, I must agree with the lyrics.’ Using that reference, you are one of the most ‘agreeable’ artists. How does that make you feel?! KP:

It’s something that I take pride in. One of the standards I use for my music is: If my Mother can listen to it then I’m happy with it. My Mom is a strict Christian, and even though we have different spiritual beliefs, I still use her to judge the appropriateness of the music. If my Mother can listen to my song, then a child can listen to my song and the content won’t lead them astray.

I’m aware that we are influencers and we have an influence on people and that influence affects our Karma. If you put something out in the Universe you’re going to get it back – so my music must be positive.

NVC: As you say that Kabaka, about your song “Can’t Breathe” you talk about people not being able to breathe because of all the stress coming at them and the negativity in their environment, so your music, clears the airways and clears the meditation. KP:

Exactly. That is the idea and the theme of the album. If you look closely at the album cover, you’ll see the pill … the artwork is telling you … the pill is normally associated with drugs but THIS pill, our pill, is the music. THIS pill is clearing the air and purifying the space – the medicine that we’re bringing.

NVC:

Layers and Statements. The title song “Kontraband” has layers we appreciate. For example, the lyrics ‘I’m way up’ is heard throughout the song which is a layer. The drum pattern is another layer, and the sound of a police cars ‘sirens’ is another layer. We haven’t hit the knockout lyrics such as “how did it pass the border scan / end up in your daughters’ hand?” Can we say that Layers and Statements is a part of your approach towards music?

KP:

Yes. Music is a way to open the mind of the people. Music is different from school and church – it gives us a different kind of knowledge. This is why we plant these kinds of messages in the music – this is music that will make you think. If you never thought about these things before, you ah pree it now. “Kontraband” was filled with lines like that – lines with double meanings – we have the music as the contraband which we are smuggling.

We’re in a time where conscious positive music must be smuggled because it’s not being pushed and it’s not the highlight. In a sense it’s underground – so this is what we are smuggling under ground! NVC:

Were you surprised to see how unified fans are in response to your music? Not just Kontraband, but collaborations and single releases? Fans from every country have reacted to your music in the same way, as opposed to fans in Australia reacting to one song one way, and fans from France reacting another, and Trinidad yet another way. The industry is used to ‘regional reactions’ but yours has been consistent across the board….

Photo credit: Fernando-Hevia L3 Magazine | October, 2018 ft. Kabaka Pyramid Pg. 67

KP:

Reggae is a universal genre. The thing about my music is that it is fused with a little more Hip Hop and Dancehall so I think it has the ability to be appreciated by a wider audience and for the aver age person, they can find something to appreciate about the music.

NVC: Damian Marley executive produced your album. Having such a music icon co-sign your vision and your sound is one of the highest awards. How did your collaboration come together and were you intimidated (at first) knowing you would be working with the Grammy winner? KP: It was an exciting time and it has been an exciting experience. From the time he sent the riddim for “Well Done” we knew this collaboration would be a success. I’m not naturally a person who gets excited, so talking to close friends and hearing them get excited, especially when they heard “Kontraband” for the first time, they were trying to get me excited and then I started to get excited! I appreciate the love shown to me and my music; to the people I’ve been able to work with such as Damian, Stonebwoy from Ghana – and the fans – all of it is an honor! I remember when I got the track from Akon, I was in Guyana at the time, and I was literally jumping up and down – this is Akon! NVC: We understand that Yoga played a role in the early days of your career. How did the practice affect you, and do you still practice today? KP:

I still practice – not as consistently because of the demands of touring and recording, but I defi nitely practice when I can. Yoga is important because it helps to remove knots in the body (in the spine and shoulder blades) that can develop from constant travel, as well, it is very important for centering and keeping you grounded and keeping the energy flowing throughout the body.

NVC: Just as your music is food for many people’s souls, food, as in what we put in our bodies is equally important. What are some of the edibles that fuel you, especially when you’re on tour in foreign countries? KP:

I practice a plant-based vegan diet. When you’re a vegan and on the road, you have to be a little less picky than when you’re at home. Some options are not the best, but you work with it, for example, we made a stop while on tour, and the only option was French fries. They didn’t have veggie burgers that didn’t have eggs or dairy in it, so I had to go with the fries.

We did have a lot of smoothies and we ate a lot of nuts, but let me tell you, I LOVE Indian food, Lebanese food, and Thai food for sure such as the coconut curry! So, there are options while traveling! NVC: “Well Done!” You waited so long to shine and now you’re shining internationally – galactically – every pinpoint in the Universe has picked up on your beacon! How does it feel?

Photo credit: Fernando-Hevia L3 Magazine | October, 2018 ft. Kabaka Pyramid Pg. 69

KP:

It feels good, but I always want to reach more people, so I’m humbled in my quest for more! I do give thanks for what the team and I have achieved so far. To perform for 30,000 and 40,000 and to have people say that the music has changed their lives – I give thanks and I want to reach even more people!

NVC: The name of our magazine is L3 and each ‘L’ has a meaning: the first L is for Life; the second L is for Love and the third for Lyrics. What general advice can you give readers on Life, Love and Lyrics? KP:

On Life, I would refer people to the “Meaning of Life Song.” We’re living life in many different bod ies and in many experiences – we need to be patient and let go of the pressure and anxiety. There is no rush. For Love, it is impartial and it’s not for one person. I am one, but I love my Mom, my music, my fans, my fellow artists – how much love is that – and I am one person! There is a Universal love we must give all living being and things.

For Lyrics – just love lyrics cause dem nuh have style like we!

Antony Richards ‘Chocolate Smooth’

By: Evelyn Germain | Photography: photography-by-caroline.com

Hailing from Wandsworth UK, Antony Richards is part of a large family and has always had a passion for music. His singing career began at 18 when he started singing with his brother’s sound system called “Rock Carny.” As his passion grew, it was not unusual to find Antony with his tape recorder on his lap whilst trying to copy other Artists on the Reggae charts – his major influences being Johnny Osborne, Al Campbell and Dennis Brown. At parties, Antony could be found holding the mic singing his heart out, so it was no surprise when, along with his brother Martin and his friend Styla, he set up his own record label and a long-time family friend by the name of Paul H provided him with musicians from “Albians” and “Surface,” to play music. Having shared the stage with names such as Tippa Irie, Sandra Cross, Winston Reedy, Barry Boom and Errol Dunkley, I caught up with Antony Richards to get up close and personal with the “Chocolate-Smooth chanting” UK Artist. Check out what he had to say….

L3 Magazine | October, 2018 ft. Kabaka Pyramid Pg. 73

EG:

Antony, it seems like you have just burst onto the Reggae scene from nowhere….

AR:

Well, (laughs) It does kinda seem that way, but I actually started recording in the 80’s. It all started when my brother brought home the George Nooks track, “If You Should Lose Me (Star Light Records)”. I fell in love with the track. I’ve always loved to sing and when I decided to go for it and record a track of my own, that one came to mind. The rest is history. I actually recorded it again in 2015 and renamed it “You’ll Lose A Good Thing.”

EG:

How did that come about?

AR:

I became reacquainted with an old Producer friend of mine, Paul, who funny enough was involved in my original recording of the same track back in the 80’s and he asked me if I was still singing. I said no, I hadn’t sung properly for 20+ years and he suggested that we get back together and do some tracks. “If You Should Lose Me” was on the top the list of tracks to “trouble” and we released it as a promo track to say that I am back. It got to Number One in the ReverbNation charts for about 6 weeks!

EG:

Did you record any other tracks at that time?

AR:

Yes, we recorded a few more tracks most of which remain unreleased. However, we did release a nice track called “To Make Love Work”. It was written by me, and it’s about a girl I fell for and she hurt me.

EG:

Awww! If only she could see you now, eh?

AR:

That’s right! If only! Nah, I’m just kidding. That was a long time ago. Another lifetime! The lyrics to the track were heartfelt at the time though and resonated with a lot of people. Even David Rodigan liked the tune and played it on his radio show!

EG:

Do you think you will ever release the other tracks?

AR:

Who knows? I’m working with Chocolate Dreamz Music Productions now and the CEO has a way of digging up tunes that were once archived and bringing them back to life. So, we’ll see.

EG:

Bringing you back to more recent times, you had a smash hit single called “I’m Glad I Found You”. Tell the readers about that single.

AR:

I was doing a PA and Stevie P (UK Producer) was there with his Artist and I thought, yeah. I like that sound. I approached Stevie and said I would like to work with him in the future and we even tually linked up. He played some riddim tracks for me. I really liked the “This Life” Riddim and it was from there “I’m Glad I Found You” was born.

L3 Magazine | October, 2018 ft. Kabaka Pyramid Pg. 77

EG:

And what a smash hit it was too! It was on heavy rotation not only on the radio, but also at events for a whole year! Well done again, Antony! We don’t hear that every day! Not only that, it also won an award. Large up yourself!

AR:

Yes, it was entered into the Sunday Lunch chart with Lady Tlc on Station FM. This is a competi tion where the listeners of the “Sunday Lunch” show and the people on social media get to vote for their favourite track from various Artists. There were 10 tracks in all, and thanks to loyal lis teners and my Manager crazily promoting the track, “I’m Glad I Found You” won the much coveted Sunday Lunch award. About a week after “I’m Glad I Found You” was released, we started working on the John Holt classic “Stranger In Love”. Again on the Stevie P Label and it was released the following month.

EG:

Has Stevie P been the only Producer who you have worked with more recently?

AR:

No, I’ve worked with Gary Digitec Lewis on the DigiTec Record Label. I recorded a sweet Reggae tune called “Love Stronger Than Steel” and later on we released another track, this time on the “Back A Yard” Riddim, called “Think About It”. Nuff Respect to Mr Tec, as I like to call him.

In June of this year, Chocolate Dreamz Music Productions had its first official releases on the Angel Riddim. Kitty Corbin covered the Anita Baker classic “Angel” and my Manager also gave the Riddim to me and asked me to put something on it. My track “So In Love” means a lot to me and it feels good to know that from June until now both tracks are still on heavy rotation! Again, I humbly give thanks!

EG:

For real! Both you and Kitty Corbin did an amazing job with your individual tracks on the Angel Rid dim. What would you say has been the highlight of your career so far?

AR:

When answering that question, I wouldn’t know where to start! Musically, I have so much to be grateful for! I have really enjoyed all of my performances and the audiences have been so support ive. That in itself is a highlight!

I remember my first time at Hootananny Brixton. (Hootananny is like the “Jazz Café” of Reggae here in the UK). That performance was special as it was Cecil Reuben’s Earthstrong. The audience really engaged in what I was doing on stage and I loved the fact that they knew the words of my songs and could sing along. It was a Blessed evening.

Working with the Legendary, magnificent Mr. Ansel “Musicmaker’ Collins. Wow! Now, there’s anoth er highlight! Ansel Collins is a legend and is focused and humble. Readers may remember him from being one half of Dave and Ansel Collins with their big hit single Double Barrel (released in 1972). The man’s a genius and a pleasure to work with.

L3 Magazine | October, 2018 ft. Kabaka Pyramid Pg. 77

EG:

So what else are you up to now?

AR:

I am really looking forward to Saturday, 6th October 2018 when I will be performing on Giants Of Lovers Rock for the first time! What an honour to be sharing the stage with the awesome Soul singing Jean Carne (“Don’t Let It Go To Your Head”) and some of the UK’s finest Lovers Rock Artists. Big up and Bless up the man Orlando Gittens for inviting me to perform at such a prestigious Event! The BIGGEST and BEST Lovers Rock Event in the UK held at the Indigo O2!

EG:

Antony, this conversation has been an absolute pleasure. The name of our magazine is L3 and each ‘L’ has a meaning. The first L is for Life, the second for Love and the third for Lyrics. What general advice would you give our readers on Life, Love and Lyrics?
