Flush deck requires some extra precautions Q. My wife and I are planning on having a new house built this next year, and we are working on plans with a builder. Our last house had a deck built on it, and the deck was a step down from the door threshold. At the time we asked the builder if we could have the deck SQUARE flush with the living CORNERS space floor level and he recommended Jeff Deahl the step because of snow build up and possible leakage, so we agreed. We are now older and are more concerned about having a barrier-free house and that includes going out onto the

deck. Is it possible to build a flush deck in our snowy area without there being problems? — Rollie in Steuben County A. Yes, it is possible to build your deck flush with the finished floor of the house. No, you cannot do it with standard door installation or deck building techniques. The problem is keeping water from getting into the house through the door openings that are adjacent to the flush deck. The best practices are to use a flashing pan under and at the jambs of the door. This is a fashioned metal flashing that is installed and sealed prior to installation of the door and properly sealed. The surrounding area of the wall must also be protected with a rubberized flashing to prohibit any

water penetration. I also recommend including a means to allow the water to flow off the door threshold and through the deck at where the deck meets the house and to thoroughly flash band joist attachment. Snow will build up in our area and when it is in contact with a warm exterior wall it can become ice and melt into water. Good air sealing is also required to try to prevent it from being a warm spot and causing ice damming. JEFF DEAHL is past president of the

Check outdoor surfaces for safety North American Deck and Railing Association has provided us with a deck safety consumer checklist to promote good, safe outdoor living. Outdoor structures such as decks are exposed to sun, rain, snow and extreme tempera- SQUARE ture changes over CORNERS the years. The need to inspect Jeff Deahl and maintain these structures • is critical and the older they get the greater the need. Inspect split or decaying wood in several spots around the deck, especially the ledger board where the deck attaches to the house. This is a common source of deck failure.

Check support posts and joists under the deck. These are the primary support elements of your deck. If you can stick a screwdriver more than 1/4- to 1/2-inch into the wood, that’s a sign of deterioration. Check the flashing. These are metal or plastic guards that direct water away from sensitive areas, often installed where the deck and house meet, to prevent leakage and deterioration to your house. Be sure the flashing is sound, securely fastened and weather tight. Look for loose or corroded fasteners including screws, nails, hangers and anchors. Make sure they are tightened or drive in any nails that have popped up. Be sure that the ledger board is secured with more than nails and if anything appears rusted or corroded replace it.

Check the stairs and steps (common sources of injury) for any soft or spongy wood. Make sure stairs and steps are straight and don’t sag. Make sure stairs, railings and handrails are firmly secured and in place. These are especially important with decks that are higher off the ground. Be mindful of the capacity of your deck. Make sure before you install a hot tub or fire pit that the deck has been designed for that load. Also factor in the number of persons on your deck when you have a large get-together and everyone wants to dance. JEFF DEAHL is past president of the Builders Association of Northeast Indiana. POKAGON STATE PARK A variety of recreational opportunities await you at Pokagon State Park, Indiana’s most beautiful state park. Park office, 450 Lane 100 Lake James, Angola. Located on S.R. 127, just off Old 27, I-69 Exit 154 and near Interstate 80/90 (the Indiana Toll Road), the park draws more than 750,000 people annually. Its 1,260 acres of picnic and hiking areas, camping facilities and renovated Potawatomi Inn promise fun in Steuben County. Pokagon is open 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily throughout the year. $7 in-state daily entrance fee. Beach Pokagon offers two beaches that are open for sunning or swimming. The bathhouse and beach are open Memorial Day through Labor Day, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Bike Rental Bikes are available at the Saddle Barn to rent 7 days a week from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Cost is $4 per hour or $12 per day. Boat Rental Row boats and canoes are available to rent for $5 per hour or $20 per day. Kayaks are $8 per hour or $20 per day. Paddle boats are $8 per hour. The rental is located in front of the Potawatomi Inn. Contact the Potawatomi Inn at 833-1077 or toll free 1-877-768-2928 for reservations and information. Campground For campground or shelter reservations call 866-622-6476 or www.camp.in.gov. Reservation season is from April thru October. A general store is also available from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Cross Country Skiing Park trails have varying skill levels, so even the beginner can feel at ease while learning the sport. At least six inches of snow must be

on the trails in order for them to open. Skis are available at the Civilian Conservation Corps shelter from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday only. Nature Center Pokagon’s Nature Center is open Monday through Friday from 1 to 5 p.m. and Saturday, Sunday and holidays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., spring, summer and early fall. During the late fall and through winter, the center is closed Monday and Tuesday; open Wednesday through Friday 1 to 5 p.m.; and Saturday, Sunday and holidays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Picnic Areas Tables, grills, toilet facilities, playground equipment and play fields are provided. Stables Stable hours are weekends 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Memorial Day; daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Memorial Day through Labor Day and weekends 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Labor Day through late fall. Guided horse tours, pony rides and weekend hayrides are available. For more information, call 833-6007. Toboggan Visitors who enjoy fast rides will be excited to learn about the 1,700-foot, double-lane refrigerated toboggan run awaiting them at Pokagon. Slide hours are Friday 5 to 10 p.m.; Saturday 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.; and Sunday and holidays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The slide opens on the Friday following Thanksgiving. During Christmas break, the slide is open during the week with extended hours from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. (except Sundays and holidays.) The open days vary by school holidays. Call the park office for dates. Sleds are $13 per hour, per sled, and hold up to four people. A valid driver’s license is required as a deposit to rent a sled. You must use a park sled.
