Outdoor options a growing trend Q. I’m considering building a new home next year and have been looking at ideas. The last house I had built is fine, but it is not very creative, it was more of a standard build by a production builder. This time I want to try and be a little more adventurous about some aspects such as kitchen and bathroom spaces. I like SQUARE CORNERS the ideas of making outdoor spaces more integral to the house Jeff Deahl floor plan. I have seen outdoor showers but are they practical in Indiana? — Ben on Lake James A. Outdoor extensions of living space are a growing trend among new homes being built. They are most often

seen in luxury home markets because they require private additional space and special features to access these areas. Often master bedrooms or guest suites will have a private patio or deck area that is private and quiet. Around the lakes it can be a trick to find private quiet areas period. There have been applications where the master bath opened onto a private, outdoor courtyard with a trellis over it that had both a shower and a whirlpool or soaking tub for owner use. We all know that outdoor spaces are great: for example, party patios or decks with outdoor kitchens for entertaining or just family recreation time. Outdoor fireplaces and fire pits are now common even in middle class neighborhoods. Outdoor showers are more unique because they typically are for expansion of master bath spaces. Around the lake

they are common for general use for when guests get out of the lake and want to rinse off. If the shower has walls for privacy, they can be a location for guests to change into swim wear also. Outdoor hot tubs are popular in outdoor recreation spaces for both owners and guests. In Indiana the biggest issue is the reduced use simply because these spaces can’t be used year around and freezing is a clear potential. Most of the time in our climate we completely drain and winterize these outdoor spaces.
