Building on is big decision Q. My husband and I want to add on to our house that we have lived in for 20 years. When we were first married it was just the two of us and we bought a 20-year-old home in a great neighborhood. Now we have two school-age children and want to expand the kitchen and laundry and add on to the living room. This spring we have SQUARE started to call a couple CORNERS of local builders and ask some questions Jeff Deahl about design and then construction. A couple of the builders have said that this time of year they could not take time to discuss our project, but they would call when they had time. I have looked on websites

about how to choose a contractor and oh my gosh, they suggest interviewing four or five and asking them to quote our project so we can compare proposals. We can’t get guys to even get back with us! We visit the service provider websites and most of the companies listed we have never heard of or are over an hour away. What’s the best way to get my job done? — Frustrated in Steuben County A. Your house is probably one of the most important investments a family can have, so to make a mistake can be irreversible and costly. Here are some basics to consider during your search. Most counties have some industry associations such as NARI or NAHB that you can look up to a get a list of members. Start there. Your community also has organizations such as chamber of commerce that can also provide a list of builder members. That list likely will include at least

the companies that are involved with continuing education and other aspects of the community. First, find someone to design your project to your liking. Now you have a tangible set of plans, which allows you to get input from builders for some comparisons. You’re probably better with a company that is used to your type of addition project, not necessarily a new home builder. Most of these companies will provide design contract options. It doesn’t have to be a registered architect but somebody that has been working on home designs for several years. JEFF DEAHL is past president of the
