DeKalb County featured on film AUBURN — DeKalb County will be featured in a film being produced for Preserving the Historic Road 2012, a national conference to be hosted in Indianapolis in September by the National Historic Roads organization. DeKalb County was chosen for its wealth of historically significant roads, attractions and people, said Richard Martin, DeKalb County Visitors Bureau executive director. The film will premier at the Indiana State Museum IMAX Theater Sept. 21. It illustrates that preserving historic roads also preserves the history of the people who made them important. The visitors bureau hosted the film crew during filming in DeKalb County and guided the crew to attractions such as the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum, the Silver Screen Cinema in Garrett, Spencerville Covered Bridge, Sechler’s Pickles and Auburn City Hardware. “We are excited and honored to play a role in the film,” Martin said. “This is an excellent opportunity to showcase our heritage and preserve the stories of these unique treasures in our community.”

Sergeant visits GMS fifth-graders Thanks students for Valentine’s Day cards sent to his unit By Sue Carpenter suec@kpcnews.net GARRETT — U.S. Army Sgt. JaBraun Knox personally thanked Garrett Middle School students for their thoughtfulness Tuesday. Knox has been stationed at FOB Bostick, Afghanistan since November 2011. A day or two before Valentine’s Day, dozens of Valentine’s Day cards and messages arrived in the mail from Garrett fifth-graders for members of his unit. The card campaign began when teacher Deb Didion asked guidance director Matt Beerbower if he knew anybody in the military. He replied yes, his sonin-law is in Afghanistan. “From there it went straight to thinking about JaBraun and sending Valentine’s Day cards over there, and the kids were just all over it,” Beerbower said. Knox arrived home for a 15day leave last Thursday, surprising his family when they answered the door about 7 p.m.. The trip home took four days with all the connections he had to make, he said. All 125 fifth-graders at the school wrote messages and cards for Bravo Battery First Platoon, First Battalion 377 Field Artillery Regiment whose duty is to supporting fire for outlying posts and infantry movements. Beerbower’s distant relative,

fifth-grader Rachel Beerbower, learned she had a family connection with JaBraun. “When she found out she was related to JaBraun, she made a special card just for him,” Beerbower said. Knox was touched by her personal message. “She said that I’ve never met her, but she appreciates everything that I do,” Knox said. “We’re related and she told me how. I think she was just overall excited that it was more personal. “They were all great valentines, everyone was happy with them, but not knowing me — but knowing of me made it more special.” The cards remain taped up on the walls in the unit’s makeshift rooms at the base in Afghanistan. “We all hung them up,” Knox said. Rachel greeted JaBraun for the first time Tuesday with a big smile and a hug. He met with fifth-graders in the hallway and fielded questions for about 20 minutes ranging from the temperature in Afghanistan, to what types of food they ate and the types of weapons they used. Knox, who has served in the military for three years and four months, is based at Fort Lewis in Washington state. He was

By Sue Carpenter suec@kpcnews.net GARRETT — The GarrettKeyser-Butler school board was updated on the high school’s community technology project Monday. Ashton Linnel’s students have been developing and designing websites for government and nonprofit entities in the community this year. The project has had two positive impacts — it’s great for the community by giving a better online appearance, and offers students reallife, hands-on experience with organizations and people involved, she said. The class has already created sites for the Garrett Chamber of Commerce, Boomerang Backpacks, the Judy A. Morrill Recreation Center, City of Garrett, Garrett Heritage Days, Garrett Museum of Art, NATMUS and the American Legion Rides. Linnel said senior student Jake Stafford has done most of the design work, while another student has put the information into website form.

The class is also working on graphic design for the city, including logos for the new Garrett police cars and billboards for the city. “This is better than any made-up project,” Linnel said of the actual websites created. Class member Vince Marshall explained how students are taught the basics of website design, then turned loose on basic projects. Students worked with Mayor Tonya Hoeffel on the City’s website and Chief Keith Hefner visited the classroom to discuss the logos for the squad cars. Marshall said he is currently working on a website for DeKalb’s VOICE which he hopes will ‘go live’ by the end of the year.

Building progress In other business, Beth Gibson, project manager for the high school project, reported paving is underway this week for the school’s driveways and some parking areas. The sidewalks and concrete ➤School board, Page 4

Health fair is today

School board from Page 1 work are 85 percent complete, and storm and sewer work is done. She noted the installation of a standing seam roof is behind schedule. Soffit panels are being installed and the building is airtight. “I am happy with the workmanship, but would have preferred it was going faster,” she said of the roofing. Ceramic tile work in the restrooms and window and door installation are nearly done. “We are moving forward for an all-in-all completion the fourth week in June,” Gibson said. Demolition of the old building will begin as soon as school is out. Some areas and equipment at the school that will no longer be used this school year have been removed ahead of time, according to Supt. Dennis Stockdale.

Common Core Sue Carpenter

Building administrators gave reports on preparations to move toward the Common Core initiative. Principal Tonya Weaver said kindergarten students at J.E. Ober Elementary transitioned by following standards all year. Next year, grades K-4 will fully adopt Common Core standards. This will put the students ahead in English and language arts, she said. Some math standards will need to be aligned for ISTEP+ testing . Weaver said the challenge will be in text complexity by taking the college levels back to the lower grades. “This will be a huge challenge, but we will tackle it as we go,” Weaver said. Under this initiative, non -fiction text will replace fiction in the classroom reading in the future. Principal Linda DePew said she met with the middle school’s language arts department earlier this year to compare Common Core with Indiana standards. Teachers added some of the new curriculum this year and will use it completely in the coming school year. Student assessment will be in 2014-2015.

Work ers roll out apshalt on a park ing area on the north side of the new high school building Tuesday afternoon. Work on the project is contining toward a June completiton date, according to project officials. “This is a transition year,” DePew said. High school principal Matt Smith said his school is 90-95 percent aligned with Common Core. “It’s going to redefine homework” and extraction of information, he said.

Washington D.C. trip Teachers Darlene Bockelman and Becky Wright summed up the American Studies and AP English classes’ recent trip to Washington D.C. with a short student made video. While making several stops at historic sites, student were most moved by visiting Shanksville, Pa. where Flight 93 crashed on 9/11 and the laying of a wreath at Arlington Cemetery. Wright said the trip gives significant impact on student achievement with a “bigger buy-in” for those students who take AP English. “They pay a little more attention. The benefit is remarkable,” she said.

Toll Free 1-877-791-7877

Both Bockelman and Wright said another day on the itinerary would have been a big help so they would not have had to rush through the Smithsonian museums to be able to view all of the exhibits. Marshall, who also attended the trip, said it was “the singular most memorable experience of my high school career.”

Recommendations approved The board approved second readings for student handbooks for the elementary, middle and high schools; 2012-2013 fundraisers for all three buildings; and the posting of job openings, excluding athletic coaches. Also approved was the rejection of a previous technology bid and decision to rebid with an opening date of May 1. The board approved a furniture and equipment bid for $334,387.07; and the purchase of new playground

equipment for the elementary school. Approval was given for a Head Start facilities implementation plan and a human resources implementation plan; cash transfer contractual document and criteria for accepting transfer tuition students. Stockdale said this plan involves student population for the second-count date in the fall. The board also approved the disposal of worthless property and sale or transfer of surplus property.

Personnel The board accepted the resignations of Troy Minton as high school cross country coach, Carrie Scamihorn as elementary art instructor and Becky Harmon as elementary school Title I instructor. The board approved the hiring of Crystal Bunn as high school Spanish instructor and changing Kathy Hyde’s status to half day. The board also approved the retirement of Evelyn Long as custodian.

GARRETT HARDWARE

By Sue Carpenter suec@kpcnews.net GARRETT — Garrett senior Casandra “Cassie Griffith Friday signed to be an inaugural member of the Huntington University bowling team. Griffith is the first Garrett student to bowl on the collegiate level, according to coach Jeff Murphy. Her parents are Jeff Griffith and Cathy Griffith. Griffith began bowling at an early age, and began playing with the Pee Wee League for youth at Auburn Bowl before coming to Garrett. She qualified regularly for state junior and youth bowling tournaments. Griffith lettered in bowling all four years at Garrett, finishing with an average of 176. She also played softball for four years; and was a member of the show choir for four years and a cheerleader for three years. Griffith had been working with Huntington’s softball coach and learned of the addition of men’s and women’s bowling in the fall.

Murphy and Eastside bowling coach Eric Dohner also told her about Huntington’s move to add a bowling team to its sports program. At first, she hoped to play both softball and bowl, plus go to school full time. Bowling eventually rose to the top of the list. “(It was) motivation, people pushing me. It’s a lot easier to get a bowling scholarship than it is to get one for softball, she said. She plans to study nursing while at Huntington, so the fit was just right. Huntington University made a decision last year to add bowling to its varsity sports — both men’s and women’s teams. Forester head bowling coach Jim Bischoff will also take his mentoring skills from Huntington North High School for the past 13 years to the college level in the fall. “It was a time for transition, he said of the move. “This will be a different challenge, he said of the change. “It’s a Christian

school, which is very important to me and for the students who come in. It makes a difference in lives. On the college level, tournaments are bowled differently, with as many as 20-40 teams from all over the country showing up for a Midwest meet, including representatives as far as St. Louis, Dayton, South Bend and Indianapolis. “My vehicle is that I want to make sectionals at the end of the year, Bischoff said. Which means they must be in the top 64 teams in the country. “There a lot of great teams and a lot of great bowlers, he said. “And I think Cassie is a great fit, not only for the school. Since I first saw her — the ways she bowls with great fundamentals — it’s effortless. “I think the way she throws will work really well in the college game, because it is much different game than in high school. The lane conditions are much more difficult. “She’s a competitor, she’s played other sports, and she will be just a great person on the team. We’re excited to have her. I’m thrilled she coming. She’s a great girl, he said. Griffith will join Eastside senior Kortney Redinger on the team who signed earlier this month.
