BUTLER — It’s one thing to win a championship of any kind and another thing to defend it. Eastside’s baseball team accomplished just that last season, following a 2017 sectional championship with a repeat performance. In the past two seasons, the Blazers have compiled a 41-14 win-loss record, including an 18-9 mark in 2018. Many pieces return from those teams, but there are also vacancies for head coach Aaron Willard to fill as the team prepares to return to the field. “We’ll have to develop depth,” he said. “We have a couple of positions that we’re unsure of, but we have a lot of experience from where we were a year ago. “To go through a varsity schedule, you’re going to have to develop depth. When different people are on the mound, where do people play and how does the team function the best?” Those will be the biggest questions for the Blazers to sort out with the graduation of seniors Caleb Ballentine and Riley Thompson. Ballentine, who played six positions, but mostly shortstop and pitcher,

compiled a 6-3 win-loss record with 66 strikeouts and a 3.75 earned run average in 52.1 innings last year. At the plate, he batted .351 with 33 hits, 33 runs scored and 19 runs batted in. Thompson mostly played first base and batted .257 with 18 hits and 14 runs driven in. The 2019 Blazers will build around three senior pitchers, a senior catcher, returning infielders and several others who gained valuable experience over the course of last season. Behind the plate, senior Joe White enters his fourth season handling the Blazer pitching staff. He compiled a team-best .447 batting average with 38 hits, eight doubles, 21 walks and 28 runs scored. On the mound, seniors Chase Franz, Maguire Jacobs and Nic Shewman give Eastside plenty to work with. Jacobs was 4-1 with 38 strikeouts and a 1.94 ERA in 39.2 innings. Shewman was 3-3 with 41 strikeouts and a 1.97 ERA in 39 innings. Franz was 2-2 with 32 strikeouts and a 1.79 ERA in 31.1 innings. White (1-0, 0.88 ERA in eight innings), sophomore Wade Miller (2-0, nine strikeouts in eight innings), juniors Codi Davis and Charlie Sexton, sophomore Dylan Hertig, and freshmen Owen Willard and Nick Snyder are among several players who could see varsity innings as well. When Ballentine pitched last year, Franz and Jacobs anchored the middle infield positions for Eastside. Franz batted .415 with 27 hits, seven doubles, two triples, 22 runs scored and a team-best 29 runs batted and five home runs.

Franz

White

Jacobs had a slow start to the season, but finished batting .306 with 22 hits, 19 runs scored and 17 RBIs. Late in the season, Franz was used more in a relief role, being counted upon to shut down the opposing team in later innings. “Chase has that mental toughness about him that he can come in and get those final few outs,” Willard said. “Maguire really improved on the mound last year,” the Blazer coach said. “He was coming off an injury, and really hadn’t played any sports for a while, and I think that kind of hindered him initially. He really played a vital role in us winning the sectional last year.” “(Shewman) had a really good season on the mound,” Willard said. “He’s also one of our better outfielders. There will be times when we want him out there and there will be times when we try other people.” Shewman could also be used in running situations. Depth will be important, especially with two middle infielders who double as pitchers. Last year, Eastside was blessed to have others who could fill those roles. “We’re further ahead this year from where we were last year at this time,” Willard said. “We had a lot of questions last year. To be honest, we had kids we had to throw in to see how they did. This year, we’re a little more seasoned. “Our seniors have been in a lot of big games, so that can only help us. Chase and Joe have played a lot of baseball. They’re both good leaders, and that experience in key situations is going to help us.” Sophomore Hayden Gardner, junior SEE BASEBALL, PAGE 8

Track teams striving to compete BY JEFF JONES

jjones@kpcmedia.com

BUTLER — Eastside track coach Kagan Gentry simply wants his athletes to compete every day, at every meet, and let the chips fall where they may. At the end of the day, that’s what counts most. Gentry, pulling double duty this season as head coach for both the boys and girls teams, is counting upon senior Trey Staley and junior Erika Brock to be the top point scorers for their respective squads. Both squads finished 2-4 in dual meets a year ago. Both teams begin the season with nearly the same number of athletes as a year ago; the boys with 21 and the girls with 12. Staley captured Northeast Corner Conference championships in the 100- and 200-meter dashes and the long jump. He won sectional championships in the 100 and 200 and placed third in the long jump. He placed eighth in the 100 at regionals. Brock finished second at the NECC meet in the 400-meter dash. She followed that up by placing second in the 400 and third in the 100 at sectionals, qualifying for regional competition in each. Brock placed eighth at regionals in the 400.

Staley will also run in the 4x100-meter relay. Brock will run in the 200-meter dash and 4x100 relay. Senior Chloe Whitman is the leading returning thrower for the girls, competing in both shot put and discus. Senior Brock Holman will compete in the 400-meter dash, 800-meter run, 4x400 relay and high jump for the boys. “They both bring great character and work ethic to this team,” Gentry said. Gentry is happy to have a number of athletes available for distance events on the boys’ side. Junior Gezahagne Biddle, a semi-state qualifier in cross country, is back. Also returning are Chris Daniels, Branden Ely and Braden Vinson. Daniels and Vinson will run in the 800. Lower and Ely should contend in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter events. “With so few girls this year, most of the running events, I will only have one girl in, so my competition really comes down to the throws,” Gentry said. He is hopeful Molly Holman and Cayla Whitman can compete for places in shot put and discus. Looking to contribute for the boys’ team are Kyler Bibbee, Nic Blair, Bobby

Staley

Holman

Davis, Matt Firestine, Jacob Geyer, John McConnell, Jiye Parr, Jared Seiler, David Slone, Jacob Smith, Brock Vinson, Gavin Wallace and David Watson. Competing for places and good finishes on the girls’ team are Lydia Bledsoe, Hailey Casto, Becky Firestine, Brittney Geiger, Jessi Gerke, Madison Haynes, Gabby Kees, Sullivan Kessler and exchange student Pin Titapa. “My goal is to really just compete,” Gentry said. “We don’t have the numbers to win many dual meets, but when it comes to the bigger invitationals, conference and sectional, we want to get as many kids to

move on as possible.” Full-time assistant Tricia Hill will lead distance runners for both teams. Part-time coaches helping athletes on both teams are Jon Hollabaugh, Brian Kessler, Christian Grube and Carlena Crawford. Hollabaugh, a former Eastside track coach, has helped with workouts for the team’s sprinters. Grube and Crawford are working with distance runners. Track season opens at Woodlan Wednesday. The Blazers are also in action at East Noble on April 2 before hosting Fremont and Hamilton April 9. Eastside also has scheduled home meets April 15 against Lakewood Park and April 30 against Garrett.

Softball team is on a mission BY JEFF JONES

jjones@kpcmedia.com

BUTLER — New softball coach Emily Scupholm and the Eastside Blazers are on a mission this season. On the heels of a program-worst 2-16 record a year ago, Scupholm, an assistant coach last year, and the players have adopted the phrase “Prove Them Wrong” for 2019. “Every day, we work toward this goal,” Scupholm said. “The girls want to learn and want to be better. They have taken huge progression steps forward since day one of practice. The drills we focus on are fundamentals, butt-down drills, soft hands and footwork. “In hitting, we focus on those basic fundaments of hitting inside-outside, high-low and being able to read the direction of the ball.” Scupholm is using a team focus to practices. “We keep both JV and varsity levels together,” she explained. “As a staff, we believe that it is better for the girls to always be intermingled. At practice, there is no label ‘JV, varsity,’ it is simply just team. The girls are learning to hold each other accountable in every

drill, which in turn makes each player a better athlete.” Scupholm grew up in Akron, Ohio and played college softball at Bluffton University. In college, she coached a 16-and-under summer team and coached Eastside’s reserve team a season ago. “I love the adrenaline rush of softball,” the Blazer coach said. “The game can change so quickly; it just takes a small spark to make a big difference.” “Coaching for me is a continuation of my playing career,” she said. “I love being able to coach the girls in a way that will push them to be the best that they can be and setting them up for success if they choose to continue into college. Being able to break down fundamentals and give the girls a very solid foundation of the cores of softball is an amazing feeling.” Six of the team’s losses were by three runs or less, and several players return from that team. “There is so much talent on this team,” Scupholm said. “The leadership throughout the program is remarkable. Each person has a role, and is doing a wonderful job stepping into their roles.” “Coachability and humbleness are both

strengths of this young team,” she added. “I told the girls right from the get-go that if I found that they were not coachable or willing to give each new drill a try, that they would not be able to play for our program. I think each girl has taken that to heart and is more than willing to try anything that we throw at them.” As a team, the Blazers batted just .234 a year ago and struggled to score runs but returnees Shyan McKinley, Brittany Salinas and MacKensie Rieke all had solid seasons. McKinley, who figures to be in the mix as catcher, batted a team-best .392 with 20 hits and 11 runs batted in. She had two doubles and two triples. Rieke, who can play third, shortstop and pitch, batted .357 last season. She had 20 hits, with four doubles. Rieke also pitched 23.2 innings, compiling a 2.66 earned run average. Salinas, returning at shortstop, batted .296 with 16 hits and a team-leading 10 runs scored. Senior pitcher Jahnna Weaver recorded both victories last season. She appeared in 91 innings and had a 4.00 ERA. As freshmen last year, Ryleigh Howe and Lynzi Laub got the taste of varsity softball. In 36 at-bats, Howe batted .167, with

Salinas

Rieke

six hits and driving in three runs. Laub had 42 at-bats, also batting .167. She recorded seven hits and drove in three. Laub can play any of the outfield positions. Howe can be a corner outfielder or catch. Freshman Ryelynn Glander and seniors Brynn Phillips and Kristan Stephens are candidates for playing time in the outfield. Phillips and senior Siera Helmick may see action at first or third. Freshmen Skyelar Kessler and Faith McClain could play second. McClain could pitch or help at shortstop. Senior Jamee Bowsher is a candidate for outfield. The new Blazer coach is helping players improve pitch selection at the plate while still being aggressive, and improving mental toughness. “Our goal is to take one game at a time,” Scupholm said. “(We want to be) learning from each game, gaining experience and taking that in stride.” “We want to work hard on and off the field,” she continued. “We are doing what no other team in the conference is doing. (We want to) let it show.” The new coach hopes to help the team climb back atop the Northeast Corner Conference and make a lengthy run in the state tournament.

Golf team working to improve BY JEFF JONES

jjones@kpcmedia.com

BUTLER — The second year as a head coach is usually easier than the first year. With the second year, coaches have a chance to review what worked and what didn’t the first time around and make adjustments. Kristian Hoff is in that position, entering his second season as Eastside’s golf coach. “Year two is a huge difference than year one for me,” Hoff said. “This is something that I have always thought about doing, (to) help the kids do something that they can do for the rest of their lives. “I learned a lot of things along the way from what the kids want to do and learn and what I would like to learn more about the game of golf. “One thing that I learned is that it’s OK to lose because then it teaches you the things that you need to work on in order to come back next week and beat that team. “Something that I am taking from last year to this year would have to be getting more involved with the kids; making sure that I spend that one-on-one time with each of them and making sure that I can be there to help them along the way of the season.”

Returning from last season are senior Julius Pineiro, junior Chase Leeper and sophomore Kaylob Shaffer. New to the varsity ranks are seniors Blake Richards and Cole Timmerman. “They have all improved from last year,” Hoff said. “We are seeing new things with their swings as the season has started, and we are working on ways we can fix those issues. I try to use all of my resources that I have, to bring them in and see what new things we are trying to work on. “I want to make sure (the players) can keep learning new things because the game of golf is something you can play until the day you die.” The Blazers are hoping to improve upon last season’s 11th-place finish at the Northeast Corner Conference meet and an 11th-place showing at the East Noble Sectional. Hoff is hopeful his players can make enough improvements in order for some of them to advance beyond sectionals as individual players. “That would be huge for us, and I think that if they set their minds to make that goal, then they will make it happen. “I’m excited for this season, and so

are the guys playing this year,” Hoff said. “They are ready to see what they can do this season.” Eastside opens regular-season play Thursday, April 11 at home against Fairfield and Fremont. The Blazers will

play in the Northrop Invitational April 13 at Colonial Oaks Golf Course. Future home matches are April 16 against Angola and April 29 against Fairfield and Lakeland. Home matches will be played at Bridgewater Golf Club.

Sophomore Dylan Hertig mostly played third last year, but is also able to give White a break behind the plate. As a freshman, Wade Miller anchored the center field position, batting .284 with 25 hits, 27 runs scored and 15 runs batted in. Johnson, Shewman and Sexton are contenders for corner outfield positions. “I like our experience,” Willard said. “I like our seniors and the experience they bring us. I think we can hit it pretty good. At times last year, we struggled throughout the lineup, but I think we can be a little deeper this year.” Winning another sectional championship is a goal for Willard and the Blazers. “It’s a season full of lessons to learn about your team and how they function best,” he said. “We hope to develop a little depth.” “I think we can be right there, but there’s other good teams in it,” Willard noted. “This team has a lot of potential and a lot of room to grow. I’m just excited about getting going.”
