he Fayette Flyers’ 2012 Southeast Electric Flight Festival (April 23–29) was simply the best yet! SEFF 2012 was hosted at the now famous Mac Hodges’ airfield. It was a huge event, graced by fantastic weather. Lots and lots of airplanes and helicopters were on display and in the air. SEFF had super noontime demonstrations and lots of product vendors. The event also had a food vendor who served up scrumptious southern food with lots of downhome hospitality—possibly the best ever. Furthermore, the people who organized this extravaganza and those who participated in the 2012 SEFF are truly aces by any measure. This was especially true of the new event director Matt Klos, who did an outstanding job taking over for Jeff Meyers. The SEFF folks really ROCK! As it has been for the last 10 years, the 2012 SEFF event was hosted at Mac Hodges’ airfield, which is located just north of Americus, Georgia on Highway 49. Americus is approximately 135 miles 4

from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Getting to Americus from Atlanta is a beautiful drive, with much to see along the way, such as the exceptional Andersonville National Historic Site, which nearly borders Mac’s airfield. You can also explore the Habitat for Humanity Discovery Center in Americus. Aviators will likely enjoy stopping at Souther Field north of Americus to snap a photo of the Charles Lindbergh Monument that honors the site where Lindbergh first soloed in a Curtiss JN4 Jenny. For those who come to SEFF from afar, there is significant history in and around Americus, so spend a few extra days exploring the absolute splendor of southern Georgia.

What makes Mac’s airfield so perfectly fitted to SEFF is its size. Plus, this year Mac excavated an area near the east end of the runway to form a lake. He used the excess dirt to level an existing dip in the runway. As a result, the runway is better than ever! There is also plenty of parking and set-up areas—including the new RV hook-up spots at the west end of the field. SEFF has a great vendor area too, and there is an on-site hobby shop. What pilots really come to SEFF for, though, is the immense, unobstructed airspace for their airplanes and helicopters—it is outstanding! While Mac’s airfield has always been a fantastic site for pilots and spectators, the addition of Lake Hodges this year really put the float on the fly! This year’s weather at SEFF could not have been better. There was a bit of wind a couple of days, but even so the pilots had ample opportunity to fly their models. The days that I attended the event were absolutely spectacular, with lots of sunshine and plenty of flights completed. It was a joy to see everything from small indoor models to giant-scale aircraft hitting the flight line pretty much whenever they wanted. What struck me about this year’s SEFF was the diversity of airplanes and helicopters gracing the flight lines. It reminded me of the days when electric-powered airplanes were defining their place in the RC world. I noticed many scratch-built models as well as almost-ready-to-fly (ARF) aircraft. Additionally, many of the ARFs had been customized for more power or details. To me, the scratch-built OH-58A helicopter built and flown by Darryl Sprayberry was an outstanding machine. It wasn’t a model he simply bought off the shelf and flew; it was a highly modified aircraft he made a ton of custom parts for and painted in ultimate scale detail. The quad copters were pretty mind blowing too, such as the one flown by Condor Aerial. Their quad copter carried a full-on digital single lens reflect (SLR) camera and could run the full length of the runway from end to end without problem. Even the ARFs were super cool. For example, any red-blooded

jet fan would have fallen in love with the new E-flite® F-4 Phantom, which literally blasted down the runway doing super high-speed passes. I’m telling you, I fell in love with the Great Planes® Waco flown by Dan Landis. It was converted to electric power by Chris Sydor, but it flew fantastic on electric. Also, I really, really like warbirds, and there were plenty at SEFF. They included the outstanding B-17 bomber by Trent Wilhelm, the 44-in. wingspan Parkzone® Corsair, the Top Flite B-25 and the Hangar 9 P-51, and the list goes on and on. These warbirds just make great flyers and put on a great show for the onlookers. This year, at the northeast corner of the field, SEFF had a dedicated area for the 3D airplanes. The pilots could really cut loose and put on a show without interrupting the flight groups that had adjoined them at past SEFF events. Chris Hinson went all out for me with his new 60-in. wingspan MXS. Also, the helicopters were able to go wild at the far east end of the airfield. While the 3D helicopters are super cool to watch, I gotta tell you the scale-bodied helicopters turned me on with their realistic flight performance and handling. Then there was Lake Hodges! The lake added a whole new dimension to SEFF. Whether it was a Multiplex Fun Cub or the Parkzone Icon A5 flying off the water, the lake was definitely a huge and refreshing addition to this annual event.

One of the things that SEFF has become known for is the noontime demonstrations. The SEFF team puts on a great show too! Their demos give manufacturers and vendors a chance to fly their products to show how they perform for about 2000 spectators each day. They feature airplanes from Horizon Hobby, Hobby Lobby, Hobbico/Great Planes, Atlanta Hobby, 3D Hobby Shop, Extreme Flight and more. For those of you who haven’t been to SEFF, the show always ends with Mac Hodges flying his huge, 20-foot-wingspan, 98-pound B-29 bomber, with the X1 airplane dropped from beneath its wing. It is truly a tremendous sight to see! Anyone who knows me knows that I enjoy good food. Well, let me tell you, the food at SEFF’s Saturday night barbecue is always absolutely excellent! This year was no exception, with the cooks serving up some of the best southern food you’ll find anywhere, let alone at an outdoor event like this one. Furthermore, if you like southern food there are many excellent restaurants in and around Americus that will delight your palate. My favorite is just a bit out of town, but it serves the absolute best catfish you’ll find anywhere, and I mean anywhere. It is The Olde Inn Restaurant on Highway 30 about 15 minutes from Americus, sitting right next to Lake Blackshear. Don’t miss it. You hear! What has made SEFF such a huge success over the last 11 years is not the airplanes, the radios, the batteries or the advances in technology. These things contributed to the growth of the event of course, but they are not what keeps people coming back

year after year, and bringing their friends as well. No, what makes SEFF such a huge, huge success is the people who organize and run the event. What they do is run a tight but fun event. By that I mean that it is well organized so that pilots and spectators get what they come to SEFF to do and see. The pilots get flight areas that are easy to access. Superb flight line bosses manage the pilot stations areas, with their focus always being on safety, yet providing lots of flight time for the pilots. Then, too, the event is spectator friendly. Spectators can walk the length of the huge flight line and set-up areas that include almost every kind of airplane, helicopter, motor, battery and speed controller imaginable. Moreover, there are many vendors and manufacturers in attendance. Consequently, even the newbie to this hobby can get the inside information on how to buy, build, set up and fly RC airplanes. I think one of the reasons that SEFF has grown and grown over the years is that pilots of every persuasion get to come together at Mac’s airfield in a very organized and safe way to fly and show models. Yeah, there are lots of people that come just to look at or sell an airplane or two, but the vast majority of pilots who attend SEFF seem to be there for the sheer fun of sharing their passion for the hobby. If they get some great weather, eat fantastic food and make new friends, that is just the bonus to it all. I’ll see you there.
