SIXTH FORM

SCHOLARSHIPS & AWARDS FOR 2023 ENTRY

Please note that all applications for scholarships/exhibitions should be accompanied by a one-page reference from the candidate’s relevant Headteacher or Head of Department. All information on the reference should be relevant to the past three years. All applications should be supported by and signed by the candidate’s Headteacher. A more detailed report may well then be requested from their current school in support of the candidate’s application. The maximum financial value of any non means-tested scholarship or award or combination thereof is 20% of the fees. Closing date for entry for all applications is: Friday 12th January 2023. Date of examinations and assessments for all Sixth Form scholarships and awards will be arranged on an individual basis.

ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIPS

PERFORMING ARTS SCHOLARSHIPS

Candidates are expected to deliver a 15 to 20 minute presentation on a subject of their choice to the Headmaster, Deputy Head Academic and Deputy Head Sixth Form. In addition, they will be expected to sit a paper on one of their intended A Level subjects (nominated by the candidate). All candidates can expect to be interviewed by the Deputy Head Academic and the Headmaster.

Performing Arts scholarships are awarded to candidates with an extraordinary aptitude in either acting or theatre production skills. All candidates are required to submit a review of a recent theatre production they have seen a week before the assessment.

On assessment day, all acting pupils will present a monologue of their choice of between 2 and 3 minutes in length. Technical pupils will offer a short presentation on a production discipline of their choice, eg lighting, sound, costume design or masks, complete with evidence of their own work.

ART SCHOLARSHIPS

All candidates will need to present a portfolio of work undertaken within the past two years and, on assessment day, will be asked to undertake some practical tests. Portfolios will be looked at as a department and the content discussed prior to speaking to the candidates. Candidates will be tested on their practical ability, their creativity, how they work as part of a group and their ability to comment earnestly about the subject. All candidates will be interviewed by members of the Art Department and by the Headmaster.

All candidates will be asked about their experience of drama, based on their submitted review and will participate in a practical workshop with the current L6th Form pupils. All candidates will be interviewed by the Headmaster.

MUSIC SCHOLARSHIPS & EXHIBITIONS In addition to any financial award, successful music scholars will receive free tuition on two instruments. All candidates should offer two instruments (which can include voice) and are expected to be of Grade 7 standard or above. On assessment day, candidates will be required to play two contrasting pieces on their first instrument and one piece on their second (and any subsequent instrument/s). They will be tested on scales, arpeggios, sight reading and aural skills. Candidates should bring examples of GCSE work to the interview. Candidates will be interviewed by the Headmaster and the Director of Music. Music Exhibitions Assistance towards the cost of instrumental lessons may be awarded to candidates who have not yet reached the standard for a scholarship but who show real musical potential. The assessment for exhibitions is the same as for scholarships.

SPORTS SCHOLARSHIPS & EXHIBITIONS

All candidates should have reached county representative level in at least two sports or regional level in one of our major sports and, ideally, offer 1st team sport in all three terms. They should submit a CV of their sporting achievements over the last three years and reports will be required from county/representative coaches. On assessment day they will be asked to show their ability/potential, and tested on attitude, tactical and game awareness, leadership, athletic ability as well as sport specific skills. All candidates will be interviewed by the Headmaster.

Sports Exhibitions Assistance towards the cost of one-to-one coaching and/or participation in the School’s Athlete Development Programme may be awarded to candidates who have not yet reached the standard for a scholarship but who show real sporting potential. The assessment for exhibitions is the same as for scholarships.
