Friendship
Welcome
There is something very special about the friendships that are formed between women who share a common passion for fabric, yarn and threads. Whether part of a quilting group, a knitting group or an embroidery guild, women are there chatting, sharing, supporting and helping one another. They are often sitting around a large table, work baskets at hand, with a hot cup of tea or coffee nearby. As we move through life we make and keep friends in different ways. Friendship is a relationship with no strings attached except the ones you choose to tie, one that’s just about being there, as best as you can. The beautiful, special thing about friendship is that friends are friends because they want to be. A friend is also one who does not necessarily accept us for who we are, but pushes us to be a better version of who we are. True friendship is unconditional. It is when you care for and love a person whatever their faults and failings, and they treat you in the same way. True friends accept differences, but share commonalities. They can criticise without hurting and they are not afraid to tell the truth. True friends can accept truth from each other, they are the ones who make us happy. Our friends are very important, and in planning this issue we discovered a treasure trove of wonderful friendship inspired projects to share with you. It is our hope that you too can celebrate the friends that you have in your life. Perhaps you will find a project to make for one of them, or maybe there is a project to fill your work basket when next you meet for a catch up.

Cindy of Quilt Doodle Designs
I have always loved to sew. My mum taught me how to sew at a young age and when I turned sixteen I was given my very own sewing machine as a birthday present. I was so excited. Starting out I sewed clothes for myself, all of my babysitting money went to fabric and craft things when I was growing up. During college, after reading a book on the history of quilting, I became interested in that. I’ve been hooked ever since.
My very first quilt project was a quilt for my grandparents. I had picked out red and white fabrics and originally went to make it in a checkerboard design. This was before I discovered a rotary cutter. I settled on making a striped design and added white borders then a red ruffle. I hand quilted it with a flower design on the border. My grandparents loved it. I now use this quilt as my Christmas tree skirt in memory of my dear grandparents.

She used to crochet and sew our clothes. So I consider my mum a very "crafty" person. My sisters and I usually had all sorts of projects in the works growing up. I live with my husband, son and two loveable dogs in the suburb of the Twin Cities. My older son lives close by too. We have been here since 1990. My husband was born and raised in rural Minnesota. My family moved here in 1976 from New York. It is nice to be close to our families, only an hour’s drive away to visit our families. Our home is a compromise between city and country. I love being close to the mall and coffee shops, my husband loves that we are backed up to woods and have deer visit our yard on a pretty regular basis. Mum and I now quilt together and have so much fun! I have been quilting since about 1982, and started my business Quilt Doodle Designs in 2010. I came up with Quilt Doodle Designs because I am usually doodling ideas down on paper. It felt like a good fit for my whimsical designs. I wanted my name to be light and fun. When I’m not home in my studio creating, I can be found at the middle school library where I work during the school year. My other passion is reading and I love Summer because I can spend all day sewing, quilting or walking my dog Wilson. Being an "early bird", usually I am up by 5am. While drinking my morning coffee I answer emails. By seven, I’m out the door to work at the library. On an ideal day, I’m in my studio sewing or working on new designs.

Cindy has designed a delightful mug rug embellished with pretty appliqued flowers and a hand embroidered verse. Make a collection to share with your friends when next they call in for a cuppa.
Step 1 ~ Cut two 7 ½” x 10 ½” rectangles from the cream fabric for backing and front background. Cut one 7 ½” x 10 ½” rectangle from the batting. From binding fabric cut one 2½” length.

This needle holder and pincushion with two little birds amongst the flowers, is a charming gift to give to a dear sewing friend. The pretty cotton lace trim secures the needle holder and allows a pair of scissors to be held on the pincushion, keeping sewing accessories all together.
Step 1 ~ Needle Holder ~ Cut a rectangle 7” x 11½” from your main fabric, lining fabric and fusible pellon. For the inside pocket, cut a rectangle of the lining fabric 6” x 7”. Cut a rectangle of wool felt 5” x 6” and two 7” pieces of cotton lace.

How delightful are these best friend dollies? Dressed in their finest outfits with matching hat and shoes, they are ready for a day of shopping or an afternoon tea party.
Step 1 ~ To make both dolls, use the templates provided to trace four legs, four arm shapes, and two body shapes onto the wrong side of the cream body fabric. Fold the fabric over so that it is doubled, then pin. Reduce the stitch length on your sewing machine, then sew on the drawn lines leaving the tops of the limbs open and an opening as indicated along the body shape. Use a clear foot if you have one.

The heart is a symbol of friendship. Create your own garland of patchwork hearts for a special friend. This is a quick and easy project, ideal for using up fabric offcuts and would make a pretty home decorating statement.
Step 1 ~ From your twelve selected fabrics, cut a strip 1½” x 22” from each fabric. Divide your fabric into two lots of six fabrics, choosing fabrics that compliment each other. Pin and sew six fabrics together to make two separate panels. Press the seams in the same direction, and press the top well.

Our pets can be our best friends, they don’t judge us and love us unconditionally. Sweetie is a very fluffy cat to sit and watch us as we sew or knit, she has a smart bow tie in a pretty floral fabric.
Step 1 ~ Cast on 30 stitches. Knit 32 rows of plain knitting to form a rectangle. Cast off. For the tail, cast on 4 stitches and knit until the tail measures 6”.
Step 2 ~ Join the rectangle to make a tube with the seam at the centre of the back. Sew across the top to form the head. Sew across each corner of the head to form an ear shape. Stuff with fibrefill or wool roving. For the base, cut a 3” circle from the wool felt and Whip stitch around the base to attach. Sew the tail in position, just above the base at the centre back.
