Believe it or not this is something that I look forward to every year. I’m one of those crazy people who need to clear house and get rid of all things that have been lying around untouched for months. Venturing into a new season for Spring / Summer 2014 gives us all the excuse to go ahead and apply this to our own work. It’s that time... step back and take a look at what’s working in your lines, designs and retail space and reevaluate what is working and what is not. Once all the clutter is out you will see that fresh new ideas will flow freely. So I say out with the old and in with the new! Happy shopping!

Imagine Greenwear: Go Green! This Made In the USA, Organic and Eco-processed line is a company on the rise. They are unique with the look and feel of their printed graphic sportswear items. Their designs combine a new process of printing and dyeing on both the front and back of all their sportswear items. Partners CAS Shiver and Elaine Fishbein work with screen printing with dyes, not screen inks, because they are soft and washable. They sought an alternative to the plastic and water-resin inks commonly used which have rubbery and stiff feel, and wash poorly. After months of testing, they developed a seaweed base dye system for printing. They quickly saw that the process was clearly the most eco-friendly system, as the base is edible, and decided to make a truly “green” printed garment. “Going organic was an easy choice. For just a minimal cost more of the fabric, we could be 100% green”, said Elaine, the owner of the company. IMAGINE GreenWear recently relocated to a vertically integrated facility in Fairfax, Virginia. There the company does all functions but knitting under one roof- cut/sew/print/dye. Water for dyeing is heated by solar panels with an excess of energy. Carbon footprint is about the lowest possible. The factory is currently working with and seeking GOTS approval, to produce the first totally GOTS approved screen printed item in the market. (Global Organic Textile Standard). IMAGINE GreenWear depends on fashion to sell their unique clothing for infants to size 8. They have found a style of art and presentation that resonates with mom’s and kids alike. The company uses jersey, rib and thermal for their pre-faded and pre-shrunk product. “Once the kids feel the soft combed cotton, they don’t want to take our clothing off!” added Elaine. Missouri based Wee Ones® debuts its ground breaking new technology for hair bows that stay put, no matter what. In a move that will forever change the game in the hair accessories business, Wee Ones will introduce the WeeStay™ No-Slip Clip, a product improvement and patent-pending innovation at major trade shows and children’s apparel markets this season. Made from a safe, silicone-like material, the WeeStay No-Slip Clip is the next big thing in girls hair accessories because of the solution it provides in the marketplace for keeping girls hair bows in place, a problem that consumers have been trying to solve for years. “Our goal was to make the best hair bows in the business even better,” says Miles Faust, CEO of Wee Ones. “With the launch of our WeeStay no-slip technology, a product of more than two years of research and development, we’re proud to say we’ve done just that.” “After several weeks of testing bows with WeeStay technology, using an in-home panel of loyal Wee Ones customers, we knew we had a winning proposition,” says Faust. “Simply put, they loved it.” The WeeStay No-Slip Clip features a patent-pending no-slip strip which is affixed to the inside of the Wee Ones clip, on the back of the hair bow. It is designed to hold the consumer’s hair bow in place, but also provides a marketing solution for Wee Ones. “For the first time our brand is on the bow,” says Gina Faust, VP Design and Marketing. “Because the no-slip strip features the Wee Ones logo, we can now be recognized for the great quality and design that our customers know and love.” . WeeStay will debut at the following shows: ENK Children’s Club (NYC) October 6-8; ABC Kids Expo (Las Vegas) October 15-18; Atlanta Apparel October 17-21; KIDShow Miami October 23-24; and Dallas Apparel October 24-27. Summertime…and the living is easy.

A bold journey to a continent of wonder. The natural beauty of African wildlife inspires scenic graphic tee shirts: an elegant zebra on spot-dyed background and a tiger peeking out of jungle leaves. Mimisol features prints using decorative motifs from the Masai culture, topped off with a multi-colored beaded collar. The bold designs seen in Little Lelia’s collection come from authentic African fabrics.

Why be stressed? School’s out and vacation’s in! Cakewalk’s simple sundress depicts photo-real scene of girl relaxing in a flower field. Smash’s delicate artwork captures a moment of serenity, rendered in Asian style and printed on paisley. Colorful sportswear by J & Joy includes coral shorts with floral print lining. A panda print on sky blue tee shirt is oh-so-cute and oh-so-Zen.

Blue hues and sunny yellow shades make a naturally fresh color palette. Tonal variations of blues are seen on a striped linen dress by Jottum and Ermanno Scervino’s elegant embroidered shoes. Timing is everything, as the saying goes. The Children’s Great Event Shoe Show, one of the trade’s most important bi-annual exhibitions, is traditionally held in August. Because of the early arrival of the Jewish holidays this year, the Spring 2014 show was held on September 10-12th in Teaneck, New Jersey. The successful result made event president Alan Blum very happy. He had been concerned about the change in timing, but the new date turned out to be for the better because the stores had already gone through their “back-to-school” period and they had money to place orders for Spring shoes. Blum said,“Everyone we spoke to was happy with this show. We had three hundred retailers attend, mostly from the Metropolitan area but also some from Canada, Oklahoma and Texas. Many buyers came from Maryland and Pennsylvania too… they drove and stayed for two or three days. My wife is the sales representative for Lelli Kelly shoes and she made thirty appointments with buyers. Every one of them showed up!” There were twelve first time exhibitors this season, as well as the return of well established collections such as Primigi Footwear, Camper Kids and Venettini. Plae was an interesting new line highlighting a unique twist on athletic shoes: removable Velcro straps which can be changed to match the day’s fashions, such as pink and purple straps changeable to orange and green. Clarks Kids exhibited for the first time this year, showing a beautiful, high quality line of children’s shoes including the Classic and Original collections. All the exhibitors reported they were very pleased with their appointments and new contacts made. “The retailers came, and because they had already been through their back-to-school season, they had money in their pockets.” said Blum. “That’s what made a great show.” The next edition of The Children’s Great Shoe Show will be February 24-26th. Contact: www.tcgess.com and thecgess@att.net Vans was established in 1966 as a California retail store with shoes for surfers and skateboarders. Currently owned by VF Corporation, Vans is a corporation, not a licensing arrangement. They currently have sales of 1.3 billion dollars worldwide. The most important category for the company is the Vulcanized shoe. Representative Brian Stone said, “The Vulcanized shoe is the big thing for Vans. We’re selling a California lifestyle. The majority of our shoes are canvas, but we’re now getting more into different treated fabrics so they can be worn all year round.”The most important styles for Vans are the Authentic, a canvas lace-up shoe; the Era, which features many prints and new textiles; and the Classic, a slip-on shoe. Vans is well known for their cool, creative prints. They have often collaborated with musicians, artists and designers, such as their current Beatles“Yellow Submarine”collection.“These collaborations are a big part of our business”, said Stone. “We keep them limited which make

them more special. We’ve had a tremendous six to seven year run with no slowdown in the canvas Vulcanized runners.” The shoe’s reasonable retail price of about $45.00 makes them affordable to kids, helping to ensure Van’s continuing popularity. Contact: www.vans.com Bobux is a New Zealand company that started in 1991 with a soft soled shoe. Company vice-president Robin Nash said, “Quality is our first mission.” A few years ago they launched a line of walking shoes. They have since added a range of“step up” shoes for the early walker. These mimic the advantages of bare feet and accommodate the child’s round foot shape, allowing for unrestricted growth. The super flexible shoes are made of soft, premium quality leather inside and out. Some new styles are made of “Spashtex” leather which is treated with a special finish that resists water and dirt. All of Bobux designs show a simply elegant European flair, ranging from soft, light-weight leather shoes for newborns to classic and timeless sandals, to trainers and sport shoes. Scaled down versions of dock shoes and nubuck moccasins are adorably designed down for little boys, while little girls can choose pink or silver leather ballet shoes with a hint of sparkle. Contact: www.bobuxusa.com and robin@bobuxusa.com The North American Shoe is a thirty year old company representing high quality, high fashion lines such as Beeko, Tingly and Tundra. They specialize in stylish shoes, taking the latest adult trends and making great versions of them for kid’s shoes. Representative Lester Cohen said, “Sandals are really coming back strongly. We do very well with metallic sandals: gold, silver and soft colors.”Sandals are creatively embellished with gold trim, cut-out leather flowers and jewels. Fringed moccasin sandals with colored beads and rope soles are an especially popular new style. North American Shoe brands are available in the New York region at highline stores such as Harry’s Shoes, Top Top Shoes, Jay’s Shoe Box and Lester’s. Contact: www.northamericanshoeco.com

eIMI Colombia 2013 » Text and photography by Janet A. Jacobs

This long-established, international trade exhibition for children’s apparel and footwear was held July 16-18 in Bucamaranga, the manufacturing center for Colombian children’s fashion.

F

or three full days, visitors to EIMI Colombia enjoyed a wide array of dynamic exhibitions, entertaining runway shows and informative activities. Among those attending were sixty international guests from eleven countries including the United States, where the Free Trade Agreement with Colombia offers great advantages such as no duty charges. EIMI was organized with the expert assistance of Proexport Colombia, the government organization dedicated to promoting exports, tourism and foreign direct investment. In addition to offering their own brands, many of the exhibiting companies have had extensive experience producing private label collections and collaborations with international vendors. The sewing quality is generally excellent and a good selection of fabrics is available, especially woven cotton and cotton/polyester blends. Hand sewn details such as embroidery, smocking and embellishments are a specialty of the Colombian market, where the variety of innovative and intricate trimming is truly impressive. Dresses were especially wellrepresented at EIMI, specifically cotton sundresses featuring brightly colored prints and special details. Creaciones Roes, Burbujitas, Paletta Baby and Florela are among several strong dress collections highlighting creative designs with artful embellishments such as fabric flowers and ribbon bows. A variety of beautifully detailed hand-sewn smocking enhanced many of the dresses and was also featured

on baby apparel, such as appliquéd and embroidered infant’s wear by Sleeping Baby, Bordino and Naty Baby. Velour and fine wale corduroy baby garments added to the appealing selection of styles seen in these lines. Swimwear is a naturally strong category in sunny Colombia. Aloha Swimwear offered a fun range of girl’s swimsuits featuring bright prints of flowers and rainbows. Cut-out appliquéd flowers and rows of ruffles added dimensional interest. Dipskin’s highend swimwear featured the added advantage of special linings tailored for specific age groups. While all their fabrics offer protection from the sun and pool chlorine, the linings for girls aged 2-4 years old contain aloe, which has a relaxing scent and softens the skin. Brand manager Janette Pena Prada explains.” We work with micro-capsule linings of aloe vera and karate butter, as well as internationally certified UV filters in all of our swimsuit fabrics.”Last March, Pena Prada participated in an exploratory trip to New York as part of a group of children’s wear companies organized by Proexport Colombia. Their Manhattan experiences were reflected in a tank swimsuit with striking graphic of the city’s tall buildings. Says Pena Prada,” The Colombian market does not compete based on price…it competes based on quality and added value.” My Little Princess and Patty Pat offered enticing ranges of hair accessories and jewelry using ribbons, bows and beads--

all made by hand with incredible details. Flip-flops by Lander were covered by multi-colored satin bows, beads and buttons which coordinated to colorful necklaces and ribbon bow ornaments. The series of runway shows held each evening were especially enjoyable. Adorable children models, high energy music and stylish choreography made the most of the participating companies’ collections. The shows were hosted by remarkably talented child announcers who treated the audiences to song and dance performances for added entertainment. Tom Kids, Hormiguita and Kitch were among the companies showcasing diverse selections of trendy sportswear for boys and girls, while Dipskin’s swimsuits generated great excitement with dancing models and sets simulating the coastal regions of Colombia. International exhibitor Roxan Lo from Peru showed a lovely, subtle collection made of organic Pima cotton, while Te Como a Besos of Argentina won a prize for their beautiful line of fresh summer sportswear in soft shades of blue. A performance by the charismatic child rap singer Teo delighted the audience. EIMI’s organizers and Proexport Colombia did everything possible to ensure a very interesting and pleasant experience for all guests. Since the city of Bucamaranga is the center for manufacturing children’s fashion, there were many opportunities to visit factories for apparel and hand-made leather shoes, with all business meetings being arranged upon request. Excursions to this fast growing city’s new malls provided an informative look at the thriving and exciting Colombian children’s wear market.
