Company Spotlight

COMPANY TO WATCH It’s A Kidsworld sits down with celebrity and fashion designer Susanna Paliotta to discuss the rapid growth of her upscale lifestyle line Bound by the Crown What is a BBTC Girl? Fashion label Bound by The Crown Couture is a 13 month young lifestyle brand taking the East Coast by storm. This fun, functional line has two distinct brand styles “casual couture” which is an every day kid’s wear collection and “sophisticated couture”which offers a more haute couture vibe with functional styles, fabrics and price. We caught up with designer and owner Susanna Paliotta to ask her why she thought her line was so popular among 8-18 year olds and what being a BBTC girl truly meant. “I started the label to bring back American made products and quality children’s apparel. I can’t tell you the countless adorable tees and tanks I have bought with bling or adornments on it only to either 1. Not be able to wash them or 2. Have stones fall off. The quality of fabrics has become so poor that we except buying from a big box store only to wear the garment twice before it looks wore out! This statement holds even more true in children’s apparel we call it a one trick pony.” “As a mom of 23 years, 2 kids and surviving many cultural generations of clothing I realized there are 3 basic rules in today’s kids fashion. Kids want to be comfortable and have their own sense of style and moms or (PBC) want to know if I spend $50 on this tee shirt I can wash its not going to fall apart. But there is a new demographic that has been my best asset and MVP in building the brand: The Sophisticated Teen. We do not live in the days of the past where if mom bought it you wore it. Our buying system has changed and you need to respect and listen to the younger buyer. In the time you have taken to read this article your teen has already googled my company and can tell you if she likes my brand . This is the reason BBTC has grown so quickly and how I can compete with big box stores. By listening to my target market, keeping them up to date through social media, and making myself accessible as a business owner to them has all proven to be vital in building the brand. So when you ask me who is a BBTC girl? My answer is simple... She is strong, confidant, and funny she will wear a Rock Star Tee with a Riding Blazer, and loves our skort line. Because being a girly girl is fun without the fuss of a skirt. The BBTC girl is sassy and smart and can pull off many different looks by just accessorizing a shirt and pants. She is helpful, kind and original, making her own fashion choices and telling her own story through our brand.”

Pictureperfect weather in Florence set the mood for an optimistic and energetic vibe inside the pavilions, reflected in the vast selection of top quality, highly creative kid’s fashion. Exhibiting companies ranged from decorative, nearly couture collections, to edgy street wear, to eco-conscious clothing made of natural materials. V isitors to this season’s edition of Pitti were greeted with a nice surprise. Upon leaving the registration area everyone entered a brand new concept section called KidzFIZZ, which showcased selected brands in boutiquelike stands. Long- established avant garde lines such as Belgium’s Anne Kurris and Simple Kids got fresh exposure in this new space, while up-andcoming newer companies introduced themselves to an eclectic mix of international buyers. Another special pavilion of Pitti was Apartment, where individualized decorated rooms displayed luxurious and sophisticated labels as Je Suis en Cp!, emile et Ida and Amberley London. The exquisite clothes of Señorita Lemoniez were stand-outs: minimalist, architectural shapes set off artistic prints and luminous solid fabrics in white, orange and rose. In the main sections of Pitti, internationally known designer brands as gaultier Junior, Kenzo, galliano Kids, Sonia rykiel and ermanno Scervino showed collections which skillfully interpreted these iconic designer labels for young fashion followers. Gaultier Junior used lots of black 36 | It’s a KIdsworld

Ja p a n e s e motifs were prominent at galliano Kids, featuring black, white and red calligraphy, comic book art and geisha graphics. The richly imaginative, top quality collection of Quis Quis also showed inspiration from Japan: wave patterns and Asian symbols depicted in red, white and black designs, FeNdI often printed on mesh techno fabrics. Quis Quis’coordinated embellished shoes were outstanding additions to the line. Knot’s seasonal theme was also about an exotic locale. Inspired by the deserts of Africa, the line featured a pretty palette of midtone pastels including peach, mint and chambray blue for both girls and boys. There was big news at Rykiel Enfant: the line changed its name to Sonia rykiel Paris, along with a change in design direction to more closely reflect the chic aesthetic of the adult line. Signature “Sonia” stripes were mixed with Liberty floral print fabrics, and Liberty prints were also boldly trimmed with black accents. In general, there were a lot of white and light colors seen in many collections, while eyelet and lace fabrics combined with loose shapes to create an open, airy feel. ermanno Scervino went all out with lace and eyelet in colors from grass green to white, pastel pink, yellow and cream. Fun & Fun featured rose colored lace in many styles including lace overalls. Fun & Fun’s super-imaginative lines

Style Watch continued to draw lots of favorable attention to their huge booth, which now includes baby groups, and their runway show was a definite crowd pleaser. Another favorite runway show was presented by a group of children’s wear companies from Spain, expertly organized by the ASEPRI trade association. Their show’s theme was 1950’s Americana, set in a retro soda shop complete with rock and roll music, dancing and ‘50’s hair-dos to match. boboli and barcarola’s sherbet colored collections were perfectly in sync with the fun feeling. The fashion fever continued to sizzle in Paris, where a record heat wave didn’t melt the enthusiasm of the many regional and international buyers. A big draw was Playtime, an increasingly important venue for upscale children’s wear designs and a showcase for the latest trends. In addition to a large number of French lines, this edition of Playtime Paris included a varied selection of international companies. From the Netherlands, Lebig showed a striking collection in super-saturated colors, mixing fabrics and cultural influences in fashionably quirky style. Imps and elfs featured a theme of “Love, Peace and Happiness” where the 1960’s decade meets today, while Belgium’s Maan chose Playtime to debut their latest artful ensembles, pulling together eclectic combinations of unique fabrics and interesting shapes. An alternative trade show called simply “Kid” held their second edition in the historic, architecturally interesting Bastille Design Center. This small, carefully selected group of mostly French companies displayed their clothes in an intimate setting decorated with minimalist design, intended to bring out the best of the high quality and sophisticated brands. Although the Who’s Next Paris show is targeted for young adults, it’s a fresh and inspiring place to find trendy accessories and sportswear that work well for stylish teenagers and girls. Ziztar ’s highly original collection of sassy styles could easily transition to teens. Flounced ombre rainbow-colored dresses and a colorfully embroidered 38 | It’s a KIdsworld

chambray group were especially fun. The Amuse collection lived up to its name, offering great items like a jean jacket covered with oversized fabric roses—a versatile style for girls of all ages. Who’s Next included an entire exhibition hall filled with a vast selection of cutting-edge fashion shoes and sneakers, along with bags and accessories. Colorful handcrafted embroidered “charity bags” by Wayuuu were a popular item. Made by women in Venezuela and Colombia, profits from sales of the bags were donated to help their communities. On to Amsterdam for the Kleine Fabriek show—a very pleasant event that offered a chance to see wonderful companies from the Netherlands as well as international brands. Since the Tour de France bicycle race started in nearby Utrecht this year (for the first time), several Dutch companies paid homage to France in their collection’s motifs. Oilily presented a superb collection which incorporated themes such as Tour de France, French cuisine and maps of France into beautiful prints with directional colorations. Stones and Bones included funny tee shirt graphics of Tour de France racers and“Le Vintage Burger”while Mood Street boy’s tee shirt graphics proclaimed “Viva la France”. A set with props was available for companies to display their outfits on kids. Imaginative, inter-active modeling s e s s i o n s o c c u r re d c o n t i n u o u s l y throughout the two days of the show. And as always, Kleine Fabriek offered a great selection of jeans and cool, casual sportswear including exciting collections by Petrol, Cars Jeans, Indian Blue Jeans, Mood Street, Tumble ‘n Dry and many others. A fine finish to a whirlwind two weeks of first-rate children’s fashion!

any specific characteristics of Peru’s unique exports make them especially desirable for children’s apparel and gift items. Peruvian Pima cotton is well known to be the highest quality anywhere. This cotton’s extra long fibers create an exceptionally soft, durable fabric that is favored by makers and buyers of better baby and children’s clothes. Delicate hand crafted trims such as crochet and embroidery often decorate these Pima cotton items, adding even more value and interest. Organic, eco-conscious and ethically produced children’s apparel predominated at Peru Moda, while cotton and baby alpaca sweater knits offered still more tempting possibilities for upscale kid’s collections. Peru Moda 2015 designated a special area for children’s wear companies, ranging from traditional, classic layette collections to original printed and appliquéd playwear. hippo Peru by Cottonseed presented cute and stylish themed collections of coordinated separates for babies, including“Princesa”, “Camouflage Turtle” and “Big Flower” groups. Hippo’s signature prints and fun characters teamed with soft, lustrous Pima cotton fabrics and special styling details. A highlight of the line was a group featuring big watercolor flowers printed on shiny chintz fabric in radiant shades of red and bright pink. A new concept collection called red Caribou was debuted at the show. This eco-friendly line was inspired by nature and animals, with art of the starry constellations featured as a unifying theme throughout. This company uses water-based, non-

metallic inks for printing and recycled paper for packaging. They’re also already planning a new project of totally organic products called “Green Caribou”. Each of the line’s themes is non-seasonal so that new styles can be added to existing groups. Whimsical drawings by artist Fabiola Anchorena included animal characters that tell a story with a message. “Into the Arctic” was about the effect of icebergs melting due to climate change, as penguins and walruses said goodbye to friends, while “Picnic Party at the Pond” depicted a happier scenario. The company founders said,”It’s not only about clothes; it’s about sensibilities — letting kids know about re-cycling, organic fabrics and fair trade.” For those buyers looking for 100% organic baby clothes, UMA organics offered a cohesive collection using the finest organic Pima cotton. The “Basics” segment of their line consisted of undyed natural cottons in the fiber’s natural, subtle shades of beige, brown and green. The more intricately styled segment called “Children’s Collections” featured brightly colored fabrics that use ecofriendly dyes. Beautifully crafted handsmocked dresses were a great addition to the line. Anntarah is the brand name for clothing lines produced by Art Atlas, a well established producer of 100% organic fabrics such as organic Pima cotton, baby alpaca and blended fabrics. Designers Jessica Rodriguez and Karla Rodriguez showcased sophisticated, elegant styles for kids and adults, including a stunning two-toned gray alpaca wool coat for babies and girls. Art Atlas also produces collections for prestigious brands in the

United States and Europe such as Eileen Fisher and Max Mara. At the adjacent show called Peru Gift Show, the imaginative toys of Mujer Artesana, Manuela ramos was a definite highlight. This important nonprofit organization works with women in remote parts of Peru, helping them develop skills to produce delightful collections of crocheted and knit toy characters. This season they featured a special collaborative project: a doll collection called SoulMates, developed and created by Gerry Hofstede, founder of Tulip & Mezcla. Made by women in Puno, each doll had their own unique look which reflected the personality of the doll’s maker. All of the knitters put their own inspiration into their doll, incorporating elements of their traditional outfits into contemporarily dressed, very fun “friends”. Outside of the show, Lima’s beautiful sunny weather, cultural attractions and amazing Peruvian cuisine offered still more inspiration and enjoyment.
