Four Ways Nature Can Protect Your Well-Being During a Pandemic People who spent more time in nature these past two years have been happier and less stressed. WRITTEN BY: Jill Suttie

Living through the COVID-19 pandemic has had a severe impact on people’s mental health and well-being. Restricted movement, loss, and isolation have led to increases in depression, anxiety disorders, stress, sleep disorders, and more. The effects have been even harsher for teens.

H

ow can we help protect our well-being during this particularly difficult time? Though a public health response is definitely called for, one way we might try to help ourselves this year is spending more time immersed in nature. In the last decade or so, research on the health benefits of nature experiences has exploded, confirming what many people know intuitively—that green spaces are good for mental well-being, whether you’re walking outdoors, looking at beautiful views, or even just seeing videos of nature. Nature reduces stress Perhaps the most robust finding on the psychological benefits of nature

8

kiddos | February • March 2022

is that being in green spaces reduces our stress. Experiments have shown that people who walk in a nature area—a forest or park, for example— feel less stress than those who walk in an urban setting, even when the exercise they’re getting is the same. In fact, some countries have introduced the concept of “forest bathing” to fight the effects of modern urban living. During the pandemic, many people have had to restrict their movement, making it harder to get outside. But those who could get out definitely benefitted from it. One study looked at how much time people spent outdoors before and

during the pandemic and whether they increased or decreased their outdoor time. The researchers found that people who had maintained or increased their time outside were less stressed and had greater psychological well-being than those who’d decreased their time. A recent study suggests that one reason for this might be that being in a green space affects us physiologically, especially places rich in plant life that contain bodies of water or uneven terrain. People who were monitored while passing through green spaces were shown to sweat less, breathe better, and have greater heart rate variability (all signs of lower stress or better recovery from stress).

off and

Nature helps stave depression, anxiety, physical complaints Nature may help us improve our psychological health during COVID for other reasons, too—by staving off depression, anxiety, and physical complaints (like not getting enough sleep).

Nature helps us feel restored Since the pandemic began, many of us are spending a lot more time online in Zoom meetings or Zoom classes. While it’s great to have the technology available for connecting with others and getting work done, it can be exhausting to stare at a screen for so long and try to stay focused.

In a study in Spain and Portugal conducted between March and May 2020, people reported on how much access they had to green spaces like private yards, views of nature, and public parks, and on their stress levels, physical complaints, and psychological distress. After taking into account how much COVID lockdowns had affected people’s employment, income, and housing situation, researchers found that people accessing nature more had lower psychological distress and fewer physical complaints than those with less access.

That’s why it can help to give ourselves an attention break by getting outdoors. Recovery from information overload (online or otherwise), sometimes called attention restoration, is one of the main ways that being in a natural or green setting gives our minds a rest.

One reason nature might improve our mental health is that it helps us let go of endless thought loops about what’s wrong with the world—what psychologists call “rumination,” which is tied to depression, anxiety, and poor sleep.

After taking that break, our brains may be sharper. For example, exposure to nature helps us perform better on tasks requiring attention and can even lead to greater creative problem-solving. Even a simulated nature experience helped people recover from overstimulation and do better at cognitive tests.

Nature makes us happier and more satisfied with life If nature experiences decrease stress, restore our depleted brains, and reduce rumination and other symptoms of psychological distress, they should also make us happier. Many past studies— including some of those mentioned above—have found this to be true.

These studies and others point to the conclusion that nature experiences are good for managing stress.

Why is nature restorative? No one knows for sure. But a recent neuroscience study compared the brain activity of people spending time in a wooded garden and a traffic island and found that being in the natural setting allowed their brains to synchronize alpha and theta brain waves (related to calm and daydreaming, respectively). This may explain why nature induces a kind of relaxed attention that provides people with a respite from overstimulation—something we could all use these days!

data from more than 20,000 people in real time comparing how they felt at different points during their day and using GPS to determine where they were. The researchers found that, overall, people felt happier when they were outdoors in green or natural spaces compared to urban spaces, regardless of the weather, activity, or who was with them. Another study surveyed people living in Puget Sound, Washington, and found that they were more satisfied with life if they engaged with nature more. This may be good news for people who’ve been hit particularly hard by the pandemic— including our essential workers. In a review of many studies, researchers found that people more connected to nature (seeing themselves as part of nature and caring about the natural world) tended to have more positive feelings, vitality, and life satisfaction compared to those who were less connected. All of this and more suggests that we can be happier and healthier if we maintain our connection to nature somehow during the pandemic. Whether we garden, have a view of nature out our window, visit nearby parks, or even just watch a nature video, we can help ourselves deal with the stresses and strains of COVID isolation by giving ourselves and our kids a dose of “Vitamin N.” Take it from me, you’ll be glad you did. k

In one large study, researchers used smartphones to collect

Have them vaccinated Vaccination can help protect against illness and the spread of disease. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that everyone ages 5 years and older get a COVID-19 vaccine. Children 6 months and older can receive the flu vaccine each year. Vaccination is especially important for children with asthma, heart disease, diabetes, weakened immune systems, or obesity.

T

he new year and beginning of spring is an opportune time to start creating healthy habits and goals for your kids. Our doctors at Care Resource have 6 tips to help your loved ones stay healthy this spring.

1

Encourage healthy sleep habits It is recommended that school-aged children (5 to 12 years old) need 9 to 12 hours of sleep each night. Studies have linked sleep deprivation with mood

swings and reduced cognitive function, including concentration difficulties, lower test scores, and a drop in overall school performance. Creating a bedtime routine can help establish a healthy sleep schedule.

2

Teach proper handwashing techniques To prevent sickness and the spread of germs, children should be taught how to properly wash their hands. They should:

According to Douglas Steele, MSN, RN, Director of Medical Care Services at Care Resource, “Vaccinations help prevent kids from getting diseases like Influenza and COVID-19. It can help prevent or reduce the spread of disease and stop other variants from emerging. Getting vaccinated will also help keep children in school and participating in the things they enjoy with fewer disruptions to school attendance and other activities.”

of the American Medical Association, childhood obesity rose significantly during the pandemic, the greatest change was among children ages 5 to 11, who gained an average of more than five pounds, adjusted for height.

4

Have them eat healthily and drink lots of water Kids should be taught to eat nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables and to drink plenty of water to create healthy habits early on. According to a study published in the Journal

5

Encourage sports and exercise Kids should be encouraged to play sports and exercise rather than spend time in front of a screen. Caregivers should stress the importance of exercise

and set the stage for a lifetime of physical fitness. Active children are less likely to become overweight, have stronger muscles and bones, and have a decreased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

6

Get their annual exam Annual exams are highly critical for the continued well-being of your children. Kids who are in school are more at risk for certain illnesses. Scheduling regular wellness exams is the best way to detect health concerns early, it keeps them on track with their vaccinations and helps assess their physical development. Regular exams are critical for helping keep your children healthy and happy through their time in school. k

Prepare Your Child . . . and Yourself for Camp!

F

or parents, the most heart-racing, adrenalin pumping moments happen when you let go and watch your child try something on his or her own. The moment the training wheels come off, the first trip down the driveway on the skateboard, the time our children ride the school bus – these are more than just memories, these are critical moments that define growth and change. For many families, the first time they send their child to camp is one of the biggest let go, hold your breath, and watch them soar moments in childhood. In today’s world of high-tech kids and families who have a constant connection to each other, it’s essential to take the time to emotionally prepare for camp. It is, of course, important to prepare the first-time camper, but families need to make sure that

16

kiddos | February • March 2022

By sending a child to camp, families are truly giving a gift that lasts a lifetime. Mom, Dad, younger siblings at home – virtually everyone – is ready to adjust to camp life. The American Camp Association® (ACA) provides the following tips to help ease first-time families into the camp experience:

• Parents – As parents, it is important to focus on the positive aspects of camp. Remember that separation is natural, necessary, and inevitable – what better place to have that first experience than in a caring and nurturing environment designed specifically for children? Parents can also focus on the amazing benefits of camp – an experiential education like no other teaching valuable 21st century survival skills like leadership, teamwork, problem-solving, and interpersonal communication.

• Siblings - Bob Ditter, family therapist and one of the nation's leading experts on camp, cautions it is likely that the child left at home will experience separation anxiety and truly miss his or her sibling. To help them prepare, be sure to talk about the upcoming separation. Before the eldest child leaves for camp take a picture of your children together that the sibling can keep in their room or carry around. Remind your children about the communication they can have with each other through letters and postcards.

• Other family members – Be sure that everyone is aware of the upcoming experience. Let family members know how to contact camper if they are interested through letters and care packages — make sure they are aware

photos, and videos to social media outlets like Facebook. Families should be sure to ask camp directors about these options.

of any communication policies the camp may have, i.e. no phone calls or restrictions on what can be sent in a care package. In addition, an increasing number of camps are using Web sites to display photos or video during the camp session. According to ACA’s 2011 Emerging Issues Survey, 75 percent of responding camps indicate that they post photos or videos to a Web site for families to view. Forty-five percent indicate that they post information,

Camp is an equal opportunity life-changer. By sending a child to camp, families are truly giving a gift that lasts a lifetime. By taking steps to mentally prepare for camp, families not only keep from getting “kid-sick” for their camper, but they can stay positive about the camp experience – which goes a long way toward helping first-

time campers adjust to life at camp. And just like taking off the training wheels, the moment families see their camper radiating confidence and joy they will feel that burst of pride and gratitude that they allowed their child this experience. k

For more information about preparing for the summer camp experience, or to Find A Camp, parents can visit www.ACAcamps.org. This online resource for families includes expert advice, information on health and safety, and ACA’s searchable database of over 2,400 ACA-Accredited® camp.

hat do you see when you look inside a fish? Like ichthyologists, the scientists who study fishes, you can see the beauty, diversity and intricate patterns of nature. Get a unique look into the creatures of the ocean when you dive into X-Ray Vision: Fish Inside Out, a striking new exhibition at the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science in Downtown Miami. Fish are vertebrates—animals with backbones—and the majority have bodies supported by a bony skeleton while some only have cartilage. Variations in the skeleton are documented with X-rays. The Smithsonian’s National Collection of Fishes X-rays represent more than 70 percent of the world’s fish specimens and is the largest and most diverse collection of its kind in the world. Although the X-rays featured in the national collection were made for research purposes, the fascinating images demonstrate the natural union of science and art and are a visual retelling of the evolution of fish. X-Ray Vision: Fish Inside Out, is an exhibition from the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History and the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES), that showcases these dramatic prints exposing the inner workings of the fish.

The black-and-white X-rays in the exhibition give a tour through the long stream of fish evolution. The X-rays have allowed Smithsonian and other scientists to study the skeleton of a fish without altering the specimen, making it easier for scientists to build a comprehensive picture of fish diversity. As guests explore the exhibition, they’ll also discover other details of the natural history, like what a fish had for its last meal! To make comparisons easier, radiographers X-ray one fish per frame—with each one

facing left—but they will prepare shots of several fish if a scientist wants to compare a group. After navigating through the striking prints in X-Ray, budding ichthyologists can challenge themselves to spot some of the fish featured in the exhibition in the museum’s three-level Aquarium. X-Ray Vision: Fish Inside Out is on view through Sunday, April 3, 2022. Admission is included with all museum admission tickets. k

10 Spring Break Ideas For Your Family Source: Family First

is bigger than ever. Get in on the fun. Spend the week with your kids challenging and expanding your abilities.

7

The Outdoor Project. Yard work on vacation? Sure! It’s the perfect time to add beauty and function to your home. Take this time to add that long talked about gazebo. That fountain or a garden. Get the whole family involved with the vision and planning. After you’ve sweated it out, head for a swim somewhere.

8

A

week with no school for the kids can be stressful! But it can also give you a great opportunity to enjoy some family fun. Here are ten fun spring break ideas for the whole family.

1

Hit the beach! For a great many people, Spring Break = The Beach. For good reason. Winter has been cold and gray. Work and school have been rough. No place on earth relaxes the spirit like the coast: bright sun, crashing waves and feet in the sand. Your family will have nothing but smiles.

2

The big parks… and small ones, too. The Grand Canyon. Yosemite. The Great Smoky Mountains. America is full of natural wonders and beauty. Somewhere within driving distance lies a national park or state park offering endless opportunities for fun and exploration.

3

Baseball. Starting in March, America’s great pastime begins another season. The states of Florida and Arizona host teams from all over the nation. Spring training offers fans a much more intimate experience with the sport.

4

The big rig. How many times have you been on the road with your family and you all see that big motor home next to you and wish you were in it? Make it happen. RV dealers rent those big rigs for surprisingly reasonable fees.

5

Backyard fun and staycations. Traveling is not the only way to have a great time with the family on vacation. Turn your backyard into your very own resort destination. You can play all types of different sports such as ultimate frisbee or volleyball. Even a sprinkler can keep young kids entertained for hours on end. Think outside the box and come up with your own unique backyard fun.

6

Grill Master. A skill your child should have as an adult is the ability to cook good food. The popularity of outdoor grilling

Volunteer. Spring break is a perfect time to give of yourself. Clean up litter in your neighborhood. Pick up trash around ponds and creeks that harm wildlife. Help an elderly neighbor with yard work or house maintenance.

9

Wacky destinations. America has millions of strange and odd attractions. Most times they are free or very low cost. The Blowing Rock in North Carolina. Dinosaur World in Florida. They offer a balance to the massive and very expensive theme parks. Yet strangely, they give the same thrills and smiles.

10

The Food Tour. We all love to eat. What is your passion? Seafood? Barbecue? Southern cooking? Plan a road trip hitting some of the very best of the foods you love. Maybe you will drive all over Texas sampling the best of their unique beef barbecue. Or, it could be a trip up the New England coast for classic seafood. How about sitting in New Orleans eating jambalaya in an open air café? Nothing brings a family together better than food. k

I

n a special meeting, the Miami-Dade School Board selected Dr. Jose L. Dotres as the next superintendent to lead Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS). Dr. Dotres is a committed educator with more than 30 years of extensive experience in multiple leadership roles encompassing the school site, region, and district office levels at M-DCPS. A product of Miami-Dade’s public schools, he began his educational career as a teacher and reading coach in 1988 at Frederick Douglass and South Pointe elementary schools. Dr. Dotres then spent five years as the assistant principal at one of the district’s first K-8 Centers, M.A. Milam K-8 Center. In 2000, he became principal of Hialeah Gardens

Elementary, where he established a large and successful inclusion program for students with autism. For the next eight years, he served as administrator, region director, and region superintendent. Dr. Dotres spent a year in Broward County Public Schools as chief academic officer where he was primarily responsible for overseeing major funding areas such as Title I and Head Start. In 2014, Dr. Dotres returned to M-DCPS as the Superintendent’s Chief of Staff. A year later, he transitioned to Chief Human Capital Officer where he provided oversight, guidance, and support for strategic initiatives in areas including professional development, performance management, recruitment and labor relations.

For the past nine months, Dotres has served as deputy superintendent of Collier County Public Schools. When his start date still needs to be determined, Board Chair Perla Tabares Hantman will now negotiate and execute a contract with Dr. Dotres. The incoming Superintendent will replace Alberto M. Carvalho, who has led M-DCPS for the last 14 years. k

African Safari is sleeping in the bush watching the sun go down after a day of game viewing, enjoying a sundowner drink, gathering with friends for an evening meal, recalling the highlights of the day around a roaring campfire, and falling into a comfortable bed, are memories that last a lifetime. Then, at first light, guests awaken to enjoy a cup of coffee and soak in the sights and sounds of nature once again. The safari base camp consists of nine tents for Classic Safari Camping, each of which sits on its own mo-

bile wooden deck for guest safety and comfort, and offers a panoramic view of the animal herds on the veldt. Base camp is close to the Welcome Barn, a 13,000-square-foot, two-story safari structure that has indoor seating, a gift shop, restrooms and three private showers for guests. There is a secondstory game viewing lounge available for overnight guests to enjoy. The price per night is $400, and up to two additional guests can be added to the tent for $25 per person, per night.

Guests looking for a few more creature comforts can opt for the Premium Camping experience. The Overlook, centrally located and with an unobstructed, 360-degree view of the entire property, is the site of the premium safari tent. On top of a tall wooden deck, the Overlook has a private bathroom with air conditioning and a shower, as well as the best game viewing location on the property. Surrounding the Overlook is a game fence for animal and human safety. On one side of the deck below is the cheetah family, another side features a pond with grazing and aquatic animals. On the other side is a family of ring-tailed lemurs. The cost is $1,500 per night (double occupancy) and includes travel from the Welcome Barn

to overnight accommodation by camel-back (or by safari vehicle, if preferred). Both camping options include Continental breakfast, and there is a safari concierge on-site 24 hours/day. Additional guests may be added for $25 per night per person and the maximum occupancy is four individuals. Throughout the property located within the Green Swamp, the second largest wilderness area in Florida (after The Everglades), guests have the chance to enjoy close-up encounters with wildlife

such as Eland, Red Lechwe, Sitatunga, Waterbuck, Grant’s Zebra, Greater Kudu, Watusi Cattle, Barasingha, Axis Deer, Fallow Deer, Water Buffalo, ScimitarHorned Oryx and Nilgai. There is also a variety of common local waterfowl and upland birds such as Killdeer, Egrets, Herons, Ibis, Spoonbills, Cormorants, Wood Duck, Anhinga, Bald Eagle, Kestrel, Red-shouldered Hawk, Meadowlark, Black and Turkey Vulture. Overnight guests have the exclusive opportunity to experience organized sundowner safaris, bird watching safaris, and mountain bike excursions. k

In addition to camping and tours, Safari Wilderness offers facility rentals— including the option of a full buyout—to host weddings, field trips, birthday parties, company holiday parties and corporate groups. For rental information visit www.safariwilderness.com/rentals
