Help your child balance social distancing and schoolwork Center for Children and Families

Due to the ongoing threat of COVID-19, more than 421 million children worldwide are out of school. While kids likely view this as a break, parents likely have concerns on how to manage their child’s behavior and schoolwork at home. The FIU Center for Children and Families has some tips to navigate this period of social distancing.

Routines Create a schedule of activities for the day (see extra resources for examples) Choose areas for activities that are relatively free of distractions

Reward and praise We're all a little scared and stressed. Praise your child when they make an effort to do their work, "I really like how you sat down at the table all by yourself." Provide rewards (e.g., tablet time, time outside) for work completion

Monitor and allow breaks Allow your child breaks after they've completed an activity (see Resources guide for break ideas) Use breaks as rewards, "When you finish this assignment, then you can watch a Youtube video" Use a timer to track your breaks so they don't extend too long

Check in with the teacher Teachers are working very hard to provide work for your children — and they know a lot about using technology to provide instruction! Make sure you are aware of what your child's teacher has put together.

and accuracy

Problem-solving Ensure that rewards are motivating for your child Make realistic goals - meet your child where they are Take one challenge at a time

Additional Resources: ccf.fiu.edu/about/resources/index.html

Connect and support Connect with other parents through social media, calling, and texting. Don't isolate yourself! Have grace with yourself. It's likely you are not a trained educator. Every parent in the U.S. right now is in the same boat, and we're all figuring this out as we go.

amp has been providing special memories of hiking, swimming, friendships, and adventure for generations. When children go to camp, they’ll likely come home gushing about the lifelong friends they’ve made and the exciting adventures they had. What they probably won’t tell you about are the life lessons camp has given them — those skills that will translate into a lasting self-confidence, an awareness of the importance of kindness, and a greater comfort in voicing their opinions.

For more than 150 years, camp has been changing lives. Camp is full of fun and excitement, but it is so much more — camp provides children with the skills needed for a successful future such as independence, empathy, the ability to work as part of a team, and a broader world view. The American Camp Association’s large-scale national study talked to 18- to 25-year-olds who attended camp as kids. We asked them what they

experienced at camp that broadened their perspective and helped them in school and in their early careers. They agreed that:

•Camp is a safe and nurturing environment that enhances independence. Camp gives children the guidance and freedom to explore activities, make new friends, and learn by doing. Camp encourages effort and perseverance. Inspiring success

As families search for the perfect camp for their children, be sure the camp is accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA). “ACA accreditation is voluntary, and it assures families that camps have made the commitment to a safe, nurturing environment for their children. Camps and ACA form a partnership through accreditation that promotes growth and fun in an environment committed to safety,” explains ACA President/CEO Tom Rosenberg. ACA accreditation is a thorough peer review of a camp’s operation — from staff qualifications and training to emergency management.

is fundamental to camp and former campers attest that camp helped them become self-reliant and confident. Camp is a community that celebrates selfesteem, resilience, and dependability.

• Camp teaches kids to live in the

moment. Seizing each moment — each experience — is the heart of camp. Former campers confirm that their time at camp was spontaneous, unrehearsed, and relaxed. They didn’t dwell on the past or worry about the future. This ability to live in the moment has helped them in their education, careers, and lives.

• Camp is a community that celebrates diversity. Diversity is the essence of the camp. Campers meet new people and learn to appreciate differences — to respect and value everyone’s uniqueness. Former campers confirm that their lives have been expanded by those of different cultures, ethnicity, faiths, and ideas. Camp provided a broader perspective for their adult lives. Camp builds and develops relationships. At camp they learned how to meet new people, work together, and carry on important and sometimes difficult conversations. They learned to make valuable connections with others. Former campers attest to the importance of these relationship skills in their success in higher education, the workplace, and life.

Rosenberg adds, “Our research shows that campers have the opportunity to gain new experiences and learn new, life-long skills. The impact of camp lasts forever.” k Reprinted by permission of the American Camp Association. ©2021 American Camping Association, Inc.

Maintaining heart health begins in youth, and integrating exercise into your family’s routine can place your young ones on the right track. The World Health Organization (WHO) 2020 guidelines on physical activity recommend an average of 60 min/ day of moderate-to-vigorous intensity aerobic physical activity throughout the week for youth. 5 Important Things to Teach Your Teen Before They Drive Source: Florida Teen Safe Driving Coalition

Knowing that your teenager is safe and making responsible choices is a blissful feeling. Not only does this give you peace of mind as a parent, but it also empowers your teen to drive with confidence and conviction which in turn makes them a safer driver. Always drive defensively Your teen should always assume that everyone else driving around them are inexperienced drivers with no regard to anyone else’s safety. This means your teen should:

• Use their mirrors AND look over their shoulder before changing lanes

• Always wear a seat belt, no matter how far they’re traveling

• Keep both hands on the wheel for better control and reaction times

B

efore your teen hits the road on their own, it’s important to educate them on as much safety-related information as you can. Below are five important things you should teach your teen prior to their solo embarkment: Know about the car they’re driving Car maintenance is likely an overlooked part of a teenage driver’s education. Driving school generally teaches students about basic functions of their cars, like how to use their turn signals or apply the emergency break. However, learning about a car’s health and basic maintenance functions will keep it safe on the road. Teach your teenager how to read the symbols on their dashboard display, as well as:

• Tire pressure: As tires start to deflate over time, the risk of blowouts become more prevalent. Teach your teen how

16

kiddos | February • March 2021

to check the pressure of their tires (with a tire pressure gauge) and teach them how to inflate their tires at a local gas station.

• Oil level: It’s important to get a car’s

oil changed every 3-5k miles. Make sure your teen understands the oil change symbol on the dashboard, as well as which type of oil the car requires (i.e. synthetic vs regular oil).

• Tire wear: Tires will lose tread over

time, making them less safe to drive on and increasing the risk of a tire blowout. Your teen should be made aware of what a healthy tire looks like compared to a one that’s worn-out.

• Paperwork: Car registration and

insurance information are important to have in a jiffy, especially if your teen is pulled over or involved in a car crash.

Put their phone and other distracting items away entirely This one should go without saying, but it’s important to always reiterate this to your teen when given the chance. Compared to adults, teenage drivers have a 400% higher chance of getting into a car crash when texting while driving. Driving is a privilege and your teen should have no excuse for distracted driving. It only takes a few seconds of keeping their eyes off the road to cause a life changing wreck. Also, parents should ALWAYS model safe driving behaviors by (ahem) not driving distracted themselves! Don’t ignore the little things It’s easy to forget about all of the little traffic rules, especially when you’re just starting out. Some of the little things your teen should keep in mind are:

• Not crossing a double yellow line • Stopping completely at a stop sign • Adhering to speed limits (especially in residential areas)

• Being mindful of pedestrians crossing when turning right on a red light

• Reading signs at traffic lights carefully (e.g. some say “No turn on red”)

kiddos

Be prepared for emergency situations Although emergency situations may not occur very often, you’ll want your teen to be prepared well before they happen. Here are some scenarios your teen driver should be prepared for:

fun

Match the pairs: find the exact mirror copy for every row.

• Tire blowouts: If the steering wheel starts to

wildly shake while driving, that may mean a tire has blown out. Pull over to the side of the road immediately if the steering wheel starts to shake or the ride becomes abruptly bumpier.

• Dead batteries: It’s expected that batteries

start to fail after 3-5 years of use. Your teen’s car should have jumper cables available in case they need a jump. If no one else is around when the battery dies, it would be good for your teen to have access to AAA or a similar batteryjumping or tow-trucking service.

• Car Crashes: Getting into a car wreck,

whether it was your teen’s fault or not, is incredibly stressful and frightening. The steps every driver should know are:

1 2

Pull over safely to the side of the road or anywhere clear of traffic.

Call 911 to send a police officer over to make an incident report, as well as an ambulance if your teen is injured.

3

4

File a claim with the teen’s insurance company. k

For more information and tips visit www.flteensafedriver.org

Answer: 1-5, 2-6, 3-4.

Gather evidence of the collision and exchange information with the other driver(s); take pictures of all cars involved in the incident and exchange driver’s license and insurance information.

he ultimate expression of love is food, and what better way to profess this sense of care than by cooking something unforgettable for your loved ones. Valentine’s Day is forever engraved in our culture with something sweet, let’s not break tradition. Instead let’s elevate this holiday by making it an all-family affair. Since cooking unites us all, why not bring your family together at the kitchen and make a new sweet dish where everyone can be the pâtissier, the pastry chef? Torta di Ricotta e Limone is an Italianinspired lemon cake that has two surprising yet satisfying ingredients: ricotta cheese and olive oil. Yes, olive oil. Not only is olive oil healthy but it give this light cake a wonderfully subtle fresh flavor. The best thing about this cake, aside from its aromatic flavors, is that it is amazingly easy to prepare and it bakes quickly.

The Conservation Action Center is an indoor, interactive exhibit with a focus on local and global conservation.

oo Miami Conservation Action Center (CAC), presented by the Marc and Robin Osheroff Family, is now open. The center is an immersive, interactive exhibition experience that introduces guests to conservation stories, both globally and locally. Guests will be able to learn what they have in common with a polar bear and crawl through a larger than life python while learning about the impacts of invasive species. Visitors will see how fast they can scoop the “poop” into compost bins in “What’s the Poop?” and whack out environmental threats in “Habitat Whack-A-Mole.” They will touch a “robo-frog” and see how they help save

frogs in the Amazon! They’ll explore the “Finding a Shared Habitat” house to see how their everyday actions at home impact their ecosystem and experience how environments come to life as they pledge to take action on behalf of wildlife. The Conservation Action Center tells powerful and personal stories of animals and people alike. Guests will discover their connections to conservation and see how they are helping to save species! As they wind through the exhibit areas of the Conservation Action Center, guests will be introduced to wildlife and nature conservation issues in Florida and from around the world through compelling storytelling and play. Many of the stories feature the work of Zoo Miami’s own zookeepers, medical staff, and researchers. The displays will provide fun, engaging, meaningful visitor experiences that help people to connect with, care for and conserve our wildlife and the environment. The goals of the Conservation Action Center, using powerful, personal human and animal stories

told through fun interactive exhibits, large colorful graphics, ambassador animal encounters, and hands on experiences, are to engage visitors so that they will:

• Make an emotional connection to what

is happening to nature and wildlife both around the world and in their own backyard, • Develop an understanding of the urgency of the situation, • Know there is hope with change, and • Be compelled to act to effect change. “Zoo Miami Foundation is grateful to the Osheroff family, the State of Florida, FPL and the Romano family for their generosity, partnership and alignment in our local and global conservation efforts. Together we understand the importance of taking care of our planet and protecting it,” said Bill Moore, ZMF President & CEO. k

Discover the Power of Science Frost Science Museum Spring Camp

F

rom the deepest parts of the ocean to the infinite vastness of the cosmos, our understanding of science would not be what it is today without brave scientists asking questions, taking risks and breaking through frontiers. Spring Camp at Miami’s Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science invites children in grades Pre-K – 5th to experience that very same process and make discoveries of their own. Young scientists will spend a week exploring the museum, making new friends and celebrating groundbreaking discoveries such as Rosalind Franklin’s X-Ray diffraction image of DNA, experiment with pressure and water to simulate Dr. Sylvia Earle’s famous deep ocean-diving trek and tinker with electricity basics to understand Thomas Edison’s amazing lightbulb invention. Inspired by Power of Science, Frost Science’s latest permanent exhibition developed in partnership with the University of Miami, campers will explore the foundations laid by pioneers in science and test their problem-solving skills to become the next breakthrough generation of scientists themselves!

Spring Camp at Frost Science Museum takes place March 29 through April 2, 2021, and is being offered both safely in-person and virtually. As always, the safety and health of campers and staff is the highest priority at Frost Science camp. The museum is employing best preventative practices regarding COVID-19 and will meet or exceed Miami-Dade County guidelines for safely operating. As a scientific institution committed to serving both South

Florida and the greater community at large, Frost Science is committed to providing a welcoming, educational and—most importantly—safe space for its campers. k

traditions

Sweet Surprises for the Whole Family Written By: Camille Lucy

W

ith the holidays quickly approaching, now is a great time to revisit, reconsider, revamp and sweeten the pot on the traditions we hold near and dear to us. Nothing says “I love you” and “you’re important to me” more than a thoughtful and unexpected surprise... in their drawers, around the house, or in a jar! Love Notes Abound Shower your family with love and adoration by slipping sweet love notes around the house! You can use them to show your gratitude, express your feelings, or share positive affirmations with your loved ones. Love notes are such a special surprise and are so much fun to receive. In today’s modern family, everyone is always on the go, go, go! Love notes are a creative way to let everyone know they’re thought of and loved unconditionally, always. They’re a nice way to bring everyone into the present moment and forget about the hustle bustle for just a moment. It’s a winwin for both the giver and receiver: everyone gets to feel good.

The New Hide-and-Seek Get creative with your love notes and make it a game! Not only is this a great surprise to receive, it’s super fun to create and hide the notes! Sprinkle a few love notes in your hubby’s sock drawer or your kids’ backpacks. The sky is the limit on this game! Tape pictures and notes inside cabinets. Stick an “I love you” heart in the fridge for someone to find. You can be really creative with this new tradition. See who can find the most notes! A few notes weren‘t found? Great! They’ll make someone’s day in the future. Baking Fun Whip up some lovely pancakes! Or anything else your family enjoys. You can use red or pink food coloring in the batter, shape pancakes in a heart, surround them with whip cream or strawberries... whatever your hearts desire. Nothing says QT like cooking and sharing a meal.

Family Coupon Book There are many versions of the Coupon Book out there. For the family, create a book where everyone gets to pick out something special to them. Give away some free hugs, date nights (either mom and dad alone, or a date night with parent and child), stay up late nights and maybe even a toy surprise! Massages for mom or dad, movie nights for the whole family and crafts for the kids. Utilize those things you know are personal, important or special to your family. Gratitude Jar With Valentine’s Day symbolizing love and connection, it’s the perfect time to create your gratitude jar and begin a ritual with your family. Have everyone fill the jar with notes about what makes each of you special, how much you love one another, and all the things you’re grateful for. Open the jar each year on Valentine’s Day and drop in a few more notes! It’s always nice to be reminded of how valuable you are to your family. And how much love you all share together. Pop one out to read anytime you need a lift-me-up These are just a few ways to show your family how much love and care there is between you all. The possibilities of different ideas and ways to play with love notes are endless. Have some fun! And make it a new tradition in your family. You can take turns hiding notes, writing notes and finding notes! Just remember... the whole point is to feel good and share love! There are no rules, no restrictions and no limit to your creativity. k
