The Truth About the Holiday Blues What it is, How to Cope and How Your Family Can Help WRITTEN BY: Camille Lucy

W

hile it can be an absolutely amazing time for some, the holiday season tends to bring with it a sense of loneliness, separation and increased stress (such as finances, pressure, unrealistic expectations) in others. National Alliance on Mental Illness medical director Ken Duckworth said, “For many people the holiday season is not always the most wonderful time of the year. What our survey shows is a tremendous need for people to reach out and watch out for each other in keeping with the spirit of the season.” According to Psychology Today:

• 38% of people surveyed said their stress level increased during the holiday season (with top stressors including lack of time, lack of money, commercialism, the pressures of gift-giving, and family gatherings).

• 56% of respondents reported they experienced the most amount of stress at work.

• 29% experienced greater amounts of stress at home.

• 53% of people experienced financial stress due to holiday spending, despite the fact more than half set budgets for their holiday spending.

“Remember that the happiest people are not those getting more, but those giving more.” – H. Jackson Brown, Jr.

kiddos | December 2018 • January 2019

Here are a list of ways to cope with Holiday Stress, anxiety and depression: Be realistic. Set realistic goals for yourself this holiday season, and pace yourself! Do not take on more responsibility than you can handle, or than you need to. Don’t be afraid to say “no.” You cannot please everyone, all the time. Your well-being comes first. And your own family and children. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, why not spend some quiet, QT with the little ones or spouse?

Prioritize. Make a list of what needs to get done, and when. Prioritize the important items on the list. And again, be realistic about you can and cannot do. And why not see what you can get everyone involved in helping you with! Stay Present. It’s easy to get lost in the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. Try to remember to take some time to breathe, ground yourself in the present moment and give yourself permission to Be Here Now. Enjoy the holiday time. Slow down… take it all in. Cherish it. There is no rush. Your children will also benefit from this undivided attention; not only does it teach them about mindfulness, they will also feel seen, heard and loved. Volunteer. Volunteering is a great way to give and receive simultaneously. If you feel lonely, lending a hand cultivates a sense of comfort and community. Think: Free or Low Cost. Find some free holiday activities to participate in! Check out some local decorations, light shows, window shopping, enjoying the winter weather or sports. Bonus: Kids love all of the above! There are ample ways to enjoy the season as a family without burning holes in your pocket. DIY gifts also make fabulous - and personal - presents for those you love. Limit Drinking. Alcohol is a sedative and depressant, interacts with other drugs or medications and may increase feelings of depression. Reach Out. Make new friends, spend time with supportive people, contact friends or family you may have lost touch with, and attend family gatherings. Setup a playdate with your children's’ friends and get to know their parents. Having contact with others will limit feelings of loneliness or despair. Self Love & Care. Don’t forget about yourself. Check in frequently to see how you are feeling and what you may need. Make time for yourself, be gentle on yourself and find ways to stay healthy and grounded (movement, meditation, time alone, etc.). Although we spend a lot of time with our families and loved ones, focused on our own lives and stress, the holidays are a great

Be Kind. Smile. Compliment. Hold the door for someone. Help an elderly person with their bags. Be kind… Your energy is contagious. Be mindful of the energy you’re putting out into the world. As Marvin J. Ashton said, “Leave people better than you found them.” Teach your children the value of kindness… it benefits both the giver many and receiver!

"For people, the Volunteer or Donate. holiday season As mentioned above, is not always the volunteering is a great most wonderful way to help others in need while also promoting a deep time of sense of community, and the year" good feelings. Donate items

opportunity to think bigger. It is the perfect time to reach out to others and offer comfort and support, passing tradition and values onto children, creating a ripple effect in our communities, and eventually, our world. Here are 3 ways to Pay it Forward and help others that may be suffering: Open Your Arms (and Doors). Remember the Single Mom or Dad that you see on the school drop-off and pick-up line, the person that just moved here and may not have much family locally, or the elderly person a few houses down. Do you know someone that has just lost a loved one, gotten divorced or experienced tragedy? Perhaps you see a child, riding his bike all the time, and always alone? There are people all around us in need. Open your arms this holiday season, and invite them in. Have them join you for Dinner. Opening the door to your home to others may seem simple, but this one action can have a tremendous impact on the lives of those suffering from loneliness.

you no longer use or need, or purchase new items to donate, and give to others that don’t have as much this holiday season. This is a great way to teach children about being grateful for all they have (and don’t have), and how easily they can make others feel happy to receive. St. Francis of Assisi said, “For it is in giving that we receive.” The Holidays are just like anything else in life; there are moments of joy, fun, anticipation, celebration, togetherness, stress, depression, loneliness… a beautiful human dichotomy. Be mindful of how you are feeling, and at all times, try to remain present, grateful and kind… with yourself, your family and with others. Reach out and offer yourself wherever you can, without over-burdening. The holiday season is an opportunity to come together; family, friends and perhaps some newcomers. Take the recommended steps to prevent stress and depression, and enjoy a true sense of peace and joy this holiday season. k

N

ow is the perfect time to get organized and set goals for 2019. As you plan for the new year, we encourage you to consider your family's dental health. Here are a few suggestions to help you create even brighter smiles in the coming year. Schedule dental appointments for your family. Be proactive, and make appointments for everyone in your family to visit a dentist in 2019. Check-ups and professional cleanings can identify cavities or early signs of tooth decay before they become serious. Don't wait for a problem or an emergency to arise. Guidance for babies and toddlers. To clean your baby's mouth, simply wipe their gums with a clean damp washcloth or gauze. As soon as your child has teeth, you should start brushing their teeth for them using a soft child-size tooth brush. A first dental visit should occur by age 3, or earlier if you notice any problems with a child's teeth or gums. Your dentist will use this opportunity to check for growth and development, and to identity any potential problems. Plus, you child will begin to learn to be unafraid when visiting the dentist office. Teach healthy habits to older kids. Depending on your child's age, it may be time to talk with them about brushing and flossing. When they are old enough to brush their own teeth, by age 12, teach them to brush twice per day, after breakfast and before bed. Daily gentle flossing for children is also recommended as soon as they have teeth which touch each other. Teaching these habits now will encourage a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums. Remember that clean teeth are happy teeth.

kiddos | December 2018 • January 2019

Bright smiles and healthy living go hand in hand. You probably already know that a great smile depends on brushing, flossing, and visiting the dentist. But another equally important factor is healthy living. That is why we recommend you and your family:

• Eat a balanced diet with plenty of whole foods, including fruits and vegetables.

• Choose healthier snacks and drink water. Avoid excess sugar, such as in sugary sodas.

• Avoid chemicals or overly processed foods which may be bad for you.

• Prepare healthy meals for your children, and educate them about making smart choices while at school or dining out.

• Start an exercise program or be active to the best of your abilities.

Follow these tips and make the most out of 2019. Remember: beautiful, healthy smiles are a family affair. Happy New Year! k

6 Keys to Your Teen's Well-Being WRITTEN BY: Walt Larimore

Y

our teens will not be normal during puberty–or entirely rational either. If you have a teen you have already experienced this. Teens in the midst of wild hormonal gyrations struggle to interpret their world accurately. Teens are not only hormonally challenged; they are socially challenged too. Their greatest anxiety is the possibility of rejection or humiliation by their friends or peers. Since their sense of worth is dependent on the opinion and acceptance of their peers, their friends will hold an enormous influence over your teens. However, you are the key to reducing teenage problems. Having hormones and social pressures working against your teens is a double whammy. That’s why it’ll be doubly hard to talk about puberty while they’re going through it.

The good news is that it’s never too late. The research is clear that parents are highly effective, both by the example they set and the words they say–and your words are much more effective and influential than your teens let on. Here are 6 practical things you can do that will help with your teen’s well-being. 1. Regular family routines Teens are dealing with a lot of instability. Having regular routines (meals, chores, and errands) gives them a sense of security and solid ground in a world that appears chaotic. Regular routines are linked to a teen’s academic achievement and self-esteem.

2. Spending time together They may be pushing you away, but secretly teens still want you to pursue them for time together. Time together makes them feel cared for. Research also shows that time with a parent helps motivate teen’s education and socialization. 3. Having high involvement Parental involvement in high school increases the likelihood that teens will attend college, vote, and volunteer. Involvement lets them know they are not alone and they are worth your investment. 4. Supervising closely Teens supervised by their parents closely are less likely to engage in early or frequent sexual relations, which leads to many teenage prob-

Find two identical socks, only two are

lems. A lot of teen sexual activity takes place in the afternoon when parents are at work. Supervision lessens their opportunities for sexual activity but reminds them that they are being monitored. 5. Communicate and praise often Teens live under constant pressure of wanting to be liked and accepted. Most of society writes them off and won’t listen to them. When you communicate with your teen (which includes a lot of listening) and praise them, according to research, they will be less at risk for delinquency and alcohol and drug use. 6. Give warm support with high demands Teens whose parents give warm support simultaneously with high demands for appropriate behavior tend to be content, self-reliant, and selfcontrolled. In other words, set the bar for them, but be gracious and loving when they miss the mark. Think of yourself as a caring teacher with a student that needs help. Many parents seem surprised to learn that their teens still care about their approval. But when a study conducted by the Institute for Youth Development (IYD) asked teens what factor most affected their decision about whether to have sex, thirty-nine percent answered that the morals, values, or religious beliefs taught to them by their parents influenced them the most. The parents’ role of instilling values in teens remains one of the most influential aspects of parenting. k

A

kiddos | December 2018 • January 2019

The studio is equipped with a state-of-the-art photo booth, where 64 high-definition cameras shoot simultaneously, capturing images from all angles. The 2D photos are then transformed into a 3D file and sent to a 3D printer that builds the figurines by releasing ink with a binding agent over thousands of layers of a sandstone material. The final result is mind-blowing: a mini you!

All Peekolos are the perfect memento to celebrate life, family, and love.

You can display your Peekolos at your home, office, birthday cake, gift it to family and friends, or simply retell your story through a collection of your own life in miniature.

The founder of Peekolos, Mariana, is a former local teacher and mother of three boys, who started experimenting with 3D designing and printing with the intention of developing educational toys. Once she met this massive printer that could actually print people, she fell in love with the idea of preserving families by capturing their lives, freezing time, and eternalizing their most cherished moments. Who doesn't love looking back at old photo albums and re-living those memorable days? Well, this new technology brings those memories to life and makes them even more tangible and real!

You can actually touch and hold those special people in your life. All Peekolos are the perfect memento to celebrate life, family, and love. The store offers a variety of sizes and packages for groups and families, as well as gift certificates. Nature's Bioluminescense Exhibition at Frost Museum of Science

D

iscover Nature’s Glowing Mysteries in this Special Exhibition

Creatures of Light: Nature’s Bioluminescence, a new exhibition on view at the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science through Sunday, April 21, 2019, explores the extraordinary organisms that produce light, from the flickering fireflies found in backyards around the world to the alien-like deep-sea fishes and other fantastic creatures that illuminate the perpetually dark depths of the oceans. Rare among organisms that live on land, the ability to glow— that is, generate light through a chemical reaction—is much more common in the ocean, where up to 90 percent of animals at depths below 700 meters are bioluminescent and where scientists continue to discover bizarre new bioluminescent species. Like the crystal jelly, whose glow led to a revolution in cell biology, these deepocean animals may hold important clues to essential questions. Scientists are in a race against time as marine habitats are increasingly threatened by pollution, overfishing and global climate change.

Throughout the exhibition, guests move through a series of re-created environments, from the familiar to the extreme, to explore the diversity of organisms that glow and how they do it. They will discover the variety of ways in which light is used to attract a mate, lure unsuspecting prey, or defend against a predator; and learn how, where, and why scientists study this amazing natural phenomenon. Guests will also encounter live examples of bioluminescent organisms such as flashlight fish.

These immersive sections include: •A woodland floor with bioluminescent mushrooms and a meadow filled with fireflies flashing unique, species-specific patterns in eastern North America •The Waitomo cave system in New Zealand, where glowworms drop sticky threads from their bioluminescent tails to ensnare prey •An interactive re-creation of Mosquito Bay on Vieques Island in Puerto Rico, home to dinoflagellates, planktonic organisms that create a glowing halo around anything that moves through the water •The Bloody Bay Wall, a remarkable coral wall in the Cayman Islands, lit up by fluorescent corals and fishes. This exhibition is organized by the American Museum of Natural History, New York (amnh.org), in collaboration with the Canadian Museum of Nature, Ottawa, Canada, and The Field Museum, Chicago. k Additional information on the exhibition can be found at frostscience.org/light.
